Who Is Ariana Grande?

Ariana Grande began performing onstage when she was a child. Her involvement in a Broadway play at age 15, followed by some small TV parts, helped her land the role of Cat on TV's Victorious . She followed that with the spinoff Sam & Cat and then dove headfirst into a chart-topping musical career, releasing five albums: Yours Truly (2013), My Everything (2014) , Dangerous Woman (2016), Sweetener (2018) and Thank U, Next (2019).

Early Years

Grande was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida, to Edward Butera, a graphic designer, and Joan Grande, a businesswoman. She took to singing and acting at a young age and made her way onto the local theater scene before she was a teenager. Her first big break came in 2008 when the 15-year-old landed the role of Charlotte in the Broadway production of 13 , a play focusing on life growing up in New York City. The early role led to accolades, and Grande won a National Youth Theatre Association Award.

Two years later, she appeared in the musical Cuba Libre and had a small role on a TV show called The Battery’s Down .

Television Roles

Grande landed her breakout role in the Nickelodeon series Victorious . Victorious was set at a performing arts high school, and Grande was cast as a goofy aspiring singer-actress named Cat Valentine. While busy with the show, Grande nevertheless pursued a musical career, making her first appearance on a record with the Victorious soundtrack. And in 2011, Grande released the single "Put Your Hearts Up," a pop song aimed at the hearts of her young Victorious audience. The show's devoted fan base voted Victorious Favorite TV Show at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.

When Victorious went off the air in 2012, Grande's character Cat Valentine survived. She went to star in the Nick spin-off Sam & Cat , co-starring iCarly’s Jennette McCurdy. Sam & Cat wasn’t on long when rumors began to swirl that Grande wasn’t particularly enjoying the experience, and the show came to an abrupt end after 35 episodes (2013-14).

Albums and Songs

'yours truly' & 'my everything', "bang bang," "one last time".

During the summer of 2014, Grande teamed up with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj on the single “Bang Bang,” a track that debuted at No. 6 and peaked at No. 3 in the United States. The album spawned another hit single “One Last Time,” which reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Grande had three hit singles from My Everything on the Billboard chart at the same time.

'Dangerous Woman'

In 2015 Grande released Christmas & Chill , a holiday album, and the single "Focus," which debuted at number seven on the Billboard's Hot 100. In February 2016, she released her third album Dangerous Woman , and the title track debuted at number 10 on the Hot 100 that March. She made music history with the track's success, becoming the first artist to have the lead singles from her first three albums debut in the Top 10. Dangerous Woman , which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, also features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne , Macy Gray and Future.

'Sweetener'

Grande returned to the charts in April 2018 with "No Tears Left to Cry," the catchy, upbeat response to the previous year's Manchester concert bombing. She followed in June with the dance track "The Light Is Coming," featuring Minaj; dropped the sultry "God Is a Woman" in mid-July; and delivered "Breathin" in September. The four releases were included in her highly anticipated album Sweetener, which debuted in mid-August, as was a track about her whirlwind romance with Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson . The overall success of Sweetener led to her first Grammy win, for Best Pop Vocal Album, in February 2019.

'Thank U, Next'

Grande quickly returned to the studio to produce her fifth album, Thank U, Next . The title track hit airwaves in early November 2018, and another chart-topper, "7 Rings," arrived in January 2019. The album debuted in February to strong praise, alongside a new single, "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored."

In April 2019 the 25-year-old songstress demonstrated her drawing power by becoming the youngest performer ever to headline Coachella, as well as just the fourth woman to earn the honor. Her collaborations from around this time include "Rule the World," with 2 Chainz, "Monopoly," with Victoria Monét, and "Boyfriend," with Social House. Later that year Grande joined Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey for the single "Don't Call Me Angel," from the Charlie's Angels soundtrack.

Grande continued with the collaborations into 2020, her joint effort with Justin Bieber on "Stuck With U" hitting the Billboard top spot in May before she joined Lady Gaga for "Rain on Me" later in the month.

'Positions'

Her third album in just two years, Grande released positions in October 2020 to generally positive reviews.

Bombing at Dangerous Woman Tour

In 2017 Grande performed the title track for the soundtrack of the live action movie Beauty and the Beast . In February of that year, she began her Dangerous Woman tour across North America and then Europe. On May 22, 2017, tragedy struck after Grande finished a concert in Manchester, England and a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at the exit of the concert hall, killing 22 people and wounding 116, including many young adults and children. "All acts of terrorism are cowardly... but this attack stands out for its appalling sickening cowardice, deliberately targeting innocent, defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives," British Prime Minister Theresa May said after the attack.

The pop star responded to the horrific act on Twitter.

Less than a day after the attack, Grande suspended her Dangerous Woman tour. She returned to Manchester 13 days after the attack to perform a benefit concert on June 4 for the bombing victims, enlisting friends and fellow superstars to perform including Bieber, Cyrus, Katy Perry , Liam Gallagher, Chris Martin , and Pharrell Williams . Before the concert, Grande visited fans who had been injured in the attack, and she also offered 14,000 free tickets to people who had been at the May 22 concert.

Grande resumed her tour on June 7th in Paris, posting in Instagram : "First show back tonight. Thinking of our angels every step of the way. I love you with all my heart. Grateful for and incredibly proud of my band, dancers and entire crew. I love you. I love you."

The following year, the singer revealed that she was still feeling the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder from the event. "It's hard to talk about because so many people have suffered such severe, tremendous loss," she told British Vogue . "I don't think I'll ever know how to talk about it and not cry."

Among her many accolades, Grande has won six iHeartRadio Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards and three American Music Awards. She has also earned 12 Grammy nominations and one win.

The pop diva returned to television with a guest appearance on Scream Queens in 2015, and she hit the big screen in a cameo appearance in Zoolander 2 in 2016. She also starred as Penny Pingleton, Tracy Turnblad's best friend, in NBC's Hairspray Live! in December 2016.

Grande has also become a popular host of Saturday Night Live , bringing her musical and acting talents to the show, including uncanny impersonations of fellow pop divas Britney Spears , Shakira , Rihanna , Celine Dion and Whitney Houston in a skit spoofing the streaming service Tidal.

In February 2020 Grande made a guest appearance on season 2 of Jim Carrey 's Showtime series Kidding .

Fragrances, Charities and Social Media

In addition to her musical and acting projects, Grande has launched two fragrances "Ari by Ariana Grande" and "Frankie by Ariana Grande" with her brother Frankie Grande.

When she is not performing, the pop superstar supports various charitable causes including Kids Who Care, a group she co-founded that raises money for charities in the South Florida region. She also has cultivated a massive social media presence on Facebook , Twitter , Instagram and Snapchat, and landed on Time magazine's list of "The 100 Most Influential People" in 2016.

Personal Life

Grande went public with her romance with her "The Way" collaborator Mac Miller in August 2016. The pair split in May 2018 after almost two years of dating. "I respect and adore him endlessly and am grateful to have him in my life in any form, at all times regardless of how our relationship changes or what the universe holds for each of us!" Grande posted on Instagram.

On June 11, 2018, People magazine confirmed that the singer was engaged to SNL 's Davidson, her boyfriend of several weeks. Subsequent attention focused on their affectionate social media posts directed at one another, though the couple found themselves in an awkward position when footage surfaced of Davidson making a joke about the Manchester concert bombing months earlier.

Grande was devastated by Miller's death from an accidental drug overdose in September 2018, a development that seemingly impacted her relationship with Davidson. By October 2018, the singer and comedian had split.

Grande went on to date Social House's Mikey Foster, before sparking a relationship with real estate agent Dalton Gomez. The pair got engaged in December 2020 and wed in May 2021.

Ariana Grande - Artist Page

Pop princesses come in all manner of packages. There’s the feisty rebel type; the smiley showgirl; those brooding mistresses of gloom. And then there’s the rarest breed of them all: the startling songbird. This is the talent that possesses a vocal range that can shatter glass at a thousand yards and make the hairs at the back of your neck stand on end. Ariana Grande has one of those voices that truly does stop you in your tracks, and no amount of music snobbery or poisonous gossip-mongering can diminish a gift that will surely see her extraordinary career develop strongly in the decades to come.

Ariana had set her sights on the stage at an early age and her professional career began on Broadway when she won a supporting role in the musical 13 . She’d developed her craft by working with children’s theatre groups in her native Florida, where she’d been born in 1993. The spell as cheerleader Charlotte in 13 earned her a National Youth Theatre Association Award in 2008 and proved the springboard for a role in the Nickelodeon TV channel’s sitcom Victorious .

‘No Place In Heaven’: Mika’s Mature Pop Album

The show began filming in October 2009 and Ariana’s part as the cute and kooky redhead Cat Valentine was well received. She swiftly picked up a sizeable fan following and the series was a hit for the network, soon leading to a second run being commissioned. Ariana says she enjoyed playing the part but admits that acting wasn’t then as important to her as recording music. The opportunity to contribute to the show’s soundtrack release was unsurprisingly seized upon by the rising star.

She made her debut musical appearance with the cast on the track ‘Give It Up’, from the first soundtrack set, which got a Stateside release in August 2011. After also infamously posting clips of herself performing songs by established artists such as Mariah Carey, Ariana’s attention-grabbing vocal range had caught the interest of Republic Records. She was duly signed and tracks were laid down for an out-and-out pop album. Lead single ‘Put Your Hearts Up’ heavily sampled 4 Non Blondes’ 90s classic ‘What’s Up?’ and sold steadily in the US, despite failing to crack the Billboard Hot 100. Surprisingly, Ariana now disowns the project, claiming she felt uncomfortable with the song and video. It led to a radical rethink for future record releases.

While further soundtrack work for Victorious kept Ariana’s fans supplied with more cover versions, it wasn’t until 2013 and the winding-up of the smash-hit series that Ariana was finally able to focus more fully on her career of choice. The finale of Victorious aired in February of that year and, though Ariana was still committed to a spin-off season of Sam & Cat , she was by now working hard on what would be her debut album.

The second single from Mika’s third studio set, ‘Popular Song’, featured Ariana as a guest vocalist and charted modestly in the US, but signalled a fresh style and the start of a series of highly successful collaborations with other artists. Ariana’s first album was finally released in August 2013. Yours Truly debuted at the top spot in the US and charted highly around the rest of the world; lead single ‘The Way’ peaked at No.9. Subsequent singles – including another duet, this time with rapper Big Sean – performed less strongly but did the job of steadily promoting her debut set to platinum status in her homeland.

A Christmas EP in December of that year crowned a promising first full 12 months in the music business, which saw Grande named as the year’s American Music Awards’ New Artist Of The Year. She also found time to appear on some tour dates with Justin Bieber and play a small part in the film Swindle .

2014 saw the start of work on Grande’s second studio album, and she enlisted the help of hit-makers Max Martin and Ryan Tedder to make sure this set moved her up to the next tier of success. Lead single ‘Problem’ proved to be a phenomenal start to the My Everything campaign when it peaked at US No.2 and even topped the charts in the UK. Featuring Australian rapper Iggy Azalea, this confident, breezy classic was a crossover smash and was a noticeable step up from Ariana’s previous work.  My Everything duly debuted at the top of the Billboard charts.

The success continued when the album’s second single – a collaboration with EDM wizard Zedd – topped the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in the US. ‘Break Free’ was noted for its kooky video satirising the science-fiction genre and quickly achieved platinum status. ‘Bang Bang’ was a duet with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj , and proved to be another big hit, topping the charts in the UK and peaking at US No.3. ‘Love Me Harder’ was yet another duet project, this time with The Weeknd, and proved to be the singles-chart introduction for the latter, who was soon to become just as prominent on it as Ariana. The song followed its predecessors into the US Top 10 and, by the end of the year, Ariana had enjoyed more Top 10 hits than any other artist in the preceding 12 months. Only its follow-up, ‘One Last Time’, failed to hit that list, but it performed better internationally and was again released with a memorable video, this time depicting Ariana’s struggle at the end of the world. (No one can accuse her of a lack of imagination when it comes to making videos!)

During this winning streak, Ariana was invited to perform at the White House for the Obamas and was also crowned at the People’s Choice Awards. In autumn of that year, Ariana guested on Saturday Night Live and appeared as a featured vocalist on the Major Lazer track that was included on the soundtrack for the film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One . In parallel to this phenomenal professional output, Ariana’s commitment to a range of good causes was by now being widely recognised as she has made a number of commitments to projects close to her heart. In particular, she has regularly supported cancer charities and programmes helping those suffering from HIV and AIDS.

After successfully smashing her way into the charts, it was time for Ariana to finally prove she could cut it live. The Honeymoon Tour crossed the world and saw her perform on 81 dates; the slick show earned generally good notices, but it was Ariana’s powerful vocals that made the lasting impression. A set of guest appearances in the Ryan Murphy-helmed comedy-horror TV hit Scream Queens kept her acting hand in, while work also began on her third album. An early track from those sessions, ‘Focus’, was released in October 2015 and made the Top 10 in most markets, including No.7 Stateside. And still there seemed no let-up in Ariana’s incredible work ethic, with an operatic duet with Andrea Bocelli and a second Christmas EP completing what would be anyone’s standards have been another standout year.

A brief cameo in the hit movie Zoolander 2 kicked off 2016 and, in March of that year, Ariana released the second single from Dangerous Woman . The title track of her third album immediately followed its predecessors into the upper reaches of the international charts and was to prove a strong springboard for the third album’s commercial campaign.

Still in her early 20s, with Grammy Award nominations to her name and a handful of American Music and MTV awards on her mantelpiece, Ariana’s staggering four-octave soprano vocal range looks set to propel her through to a long-term career at the heart of the industry. Combining sharp commercial instincts – she has already endorsed fragrance and make-up launches – with a canny pop sensibility and an all-round showbiz appeal, there is little doubt that her musical skills and acting ability will see her through what can be a precarious landscape for pop acts that peak so high so suddenly. Grounded, talented and in possession of a truly unique voice, she knows she’s been blessed with something special, and it’s a gift and platform she treats with the utmost respect. With an echo of Mariah and a nod to the youthful Whitney, Ariana is truly a global icon in the making…

(born 1993). American pop singer and actress Ariana Grande burst onto the music scene in the early 2010s. Her four-octave range brought forth comparisons to Mariah Carey . Grande increased her popularity through the power of social media, connecting with her fans through posts on Twitter , YouTube , Instagram, and other platforms.

Ariana Grande-Butera was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida. She began singing and acting when she was young. In 2008 Grande won a role in the Broadway play 13 . She soon began appearing in bit parts on television shows. Her big break came in 2010 when she was cast as Cat Valentine on the television series Victorious . She played a teenager attending a performing arts school in the situation comedy. Grande was on the show until Nickelodeon canceled it in 2013. After that she starred in the spin-off show Sam & Cat , which aired from 2013 to 2014.

While pursuing her acting career, Grande had also been perfecting her singing. She had released a single, “Put Your Hearts Up,” in 2011 (she later disparaged the song and music video for its teen vibe). Grande decided to concentrate more fully on her music. In 2013 she released the album Yours Truly . It featured the popular single “The Way,” a collaboration with rapper Mac Miller. It debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Top 100 chart.

Grande’s second album, My Everything , was released in 2014. It featured collaborations with such singers as The Weeknd, Iggy Azalea, and Childish Gambino ( Donald Glover ). The album, as well as the song “Bang Bang” featuring Jessie J and Nicki Minaj , earned Grande her first Grammy Award nominations.

Grande’s third album, Dangerous Woman (2016), once again included collaborations with well-known artists such as Lil’ Wayne and Minaj. Grande began a Dangerous Woman tour in 2017. In May of that year a suicide bomber killed more than 20 people at an arena after her concert in Manchester, England. Grande subsequently organized a benefit concert to raise funds for those affected by the bombing. Stars participating in the benefit concert included Katy Perry , Justin Bieber , and Miley Cyrus . In 2018 Grande released a four-part documentary series on YouTube called Dangerous Woman Diaries . It included behind-the-scenes footage of the tour as well as clips from the making of her next album, Sweetener (2018).

Like two of her three previous albums, Sweetener reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart ( Dangerous Woman peaked at number two). Sweetener included the songs “God Is a Woman,” “No Tears Left to Cry,” and “The Light Is Coming,” featuring Minaj. Sweetener won the award for best pop vocal album at the 2019 Grammys. Grande released the album Thank U, Next in 2019. The title track, as well as such songs as “Ghostin” and “7 Rings,” included glimpses into her personal life. Grande released her sixth studio album, Positions , in 2020. She won her second Grammy Award (presented in early 2021), for best pop duo/group performance, for her collaboration with Lady Gaga on the song “Rain on Me” (2020).

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande-Butera , known professionally as Ariana Grande , is an American singer, lyricist and actress. She began her career as a soloist with various symphonies, such as the South Florida Philharmonic. She made her acting debut as Charlotte in the Broadway musical 13 in 2008, before landing the role of Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon television series Victorious in 2009. Became a pop star after her debut album Yours Truly achieved widespread success in 2013. She then followed up with the similarly popular album My Everything, which featured the hit singles “Break Free” and “Problem.” She first gained fame as an actress, portraying Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon series Victorious as well as on the show’s spin-off Sam and Cat.

Ariana Grande is still deep in the middle of promoting her most recent album, Eternal Sunshine . The set has produced several hit singles, and the singer is moving on to the next tune from the project, “The Boy Is Mine,” which will hopefully also become a smash as well.

As she gets ready to push another single from the full-length, Grande’s current focus is still riding high on a number of Billboard charts. This week, the tune does step back from the throne on one of the most competitive tallies published by the company–and just shortly after it helped the singer make history.

On this week’s Pop Airplay chart–the ranking of the most successful tracks at top 40 pop radio throughout the U.S.–Grande is forced out of the limelight. Her single “We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” steps down from the No. 1 spot after only a few frames in charge. This time around, it slides to No. 3. While it might not be running the show any longer, the tune did help the powerhouse vocalist earn a new spot in the chart annals.

“We Can't Be Friends” marked Grande’s tenth No. 1 on the Pop Airplay chart when it reached the summit just a few weeks ago. As it finally climbed to the peak position, the tune helped the Grammy winner become one of six musicians who have accrued double-digit leaders.

With an even 10 champions to her credit, Grande is currently on the same level as Justin Bieber. The two stars are tied for the fifth-most rulers in the history of the ranking. Taylor Swift dominates with 13. Katy Perry, Maroon 5, and Rihanna are all matched with one another, with 11 No. 1s apiece.

This frame, the Pop Airplay tally is owned by SZA. The R&B and pop superstar’s single “Saturn” lifts from No. 3 to No. 1 in its thirteenth frame on the tally.

“Saturn” gives SZA her third No. 1 on the Pop Airplay chart. She’s previously run the show with her own “Kill Bill,” as well as on “Kiss Me More” alongside Doja Cat.
