Where to Turn: 8 Tips for Finding a Speech Therapist in Your Area

If you’re searching to find a speech therapist in your area you might have several concerns and questions about this process. The choices you have and the decisions you have about your child’s or your own speech therapy process will be based on two key factors: the nature of the disorder and the availability of resources. If you or your child has been diagnosed with a specific speech disorder you can then search for an SLP who has experience treating this type of condition. If you’re just in the process of obtaining an assessment, many speech clinics will be able to provide a thorough evaluation.

Where Do I Look to Find a Speech Therapist?

Each and every speech therapy patient has unique needs and expectations, so finding an SLP who can address those unique needs in every patient can feel overwhelming. However, there are many places you can look to find a speech therapist who can address your concerns.

  • Talk with your or your child’s pediatrician or your own doctor. When your work with healthcare providers outside of a school district or early education program, the referrals you will receive will likely be private speech therapy clinics, which have their own benefits and disadvantages (i.e. targeted specialties and higher costs). If your child has other health issues that are compounding his problems a private clinic might be more practical, especially as you are determining an effective approach.
  • Check with your insurance company to see if you have a network of providers with whom you can work.
  • Check out Speech Buddies Connect a free & easy way to find Speech Therapists for in-home, office or virtual appointments.
  • Look to the online professional directory compiled by ASHA – the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. You can access information about SLPs and audiologists who hold the CCC – Certificate of Clinical Competence – by ASHA.
  • Connect with the early childhood intervention program in your county . Many programs help to match children who are younger than kindergarten age with the professionals they need to help them prosper and succeed. This includes occupational therapists and speech therapists.
  • Check with your child’s school district for a list of the SLPs and audiologists who work with the students. If you have a specific diagnosis you can put in a request for more information about SLPs who might specialize in that area.
  • Look in your area for colleges that might offer audiology or speech therapy programs. These settings often have current assessment options and the college students are closely shadowed by experienced professionals. It can be a way to receive a diagnosis and treatment while saving money – and supporting the learning endeavors of the college students. However, you might not have as much input about scheduling or the consistency of the person with whom your child works because students might trade and rotate shifts.
  • Once you have found an SLP, make sure that he or she is a good fit for you or your child . Take time to get to know the SLP, understand his or her methods and approaches, and make sure that you are in agreement about the treatment plan.

Continue efforts at home to build communication skills while looking for a speech therapist. Once you do find a speech therapist you will become a team that works to promote better communication skills. Resources such as It Takes Two to Talk: A Practical Guide for Parents of Children with Language Delays, by the Hanen Center, is recommended by some SLPs as an important tool for parents. The efforts you and your child can put forth outside of speech therapy sessions can be just as powerful as the sessions themselves.

The Best Online Speech Therapy: A 2024 Guide

Table of Contents

What is speech therapy, when is speech therapy recommended, what is online speech therapy, benefits of online speech therapy, drawbacks of online speech therapy, what to look for in an online speech therapy provider, according to experts, top online speech therapy providers.

With improving technology and the growth of telemedicine , speech-language pathologists can now offer speech therapy services online. In fact, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) considers online speech therapy appropriate and effective for many services speech-language pathologists provide [1] Telepractice . American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Accessed 1/27/23. .

Online speech therapy may offer more flexibility than in-person services, and it increases access to speech therapists for people who aren’t able to travel to a provider’s location. You can find online speech therapy on several different platforms, but before you choose a service, it’s important to know what to look for to ensure it meets your needs.

We asked experts what to look for in an online speech therapy provider and highlighted platforms that meet their criteria, have options for those with and without insurance and offer a variety of specialists and services. Read on to learn more about how speech therapy works online and providers to consider.

Speech therapy is a type of therapy provided by a licensed professional, typically a speech-language pathologist. Speech therapy helps people learn, improve or regain language or swallow function, as well as voice and cognitive communication skills. There are lots of reasons someone might need speech therapy, and therapists serve all ages, from early childhood to older adults.

Speech therapy can:

  • Treat language and speech disorders
  • Help with social communications
  • Address cognitive issues such as memory, attention and understanding
  • Improve eating and swallowing problems
  • Train your voice in different ways

A speech therapist may have their own private practice, or they may work in a school, hospital, rehabilitation facility or university. Since there’s a wide range of reasons people seek speech therapy, speech-language pathologists often specialize in working with a specific population. For example, they may focus on children with autism or adults recovering from a stroke.

Children may be recommended for speech therapy if they have a language disorder that affects their ability to learn to speak, name things or put together sentences, or a speech disorder that affects how they pronounce words.

Adults may be referred to speech therapy to recover speech and language skills as well as improve cognitive function including memory and attention after a brain injury, like a concussion or a stroke, or after a diagnosis that can impact speech or swallowing, like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or dementia. An adult might also look for a speech therapist to help with voice training if they use their voice for their career, like an actor, singer or public speaker. Transgender adults may work with a speech therapist for voice training while they’re in transition.

Before technology advances, a speech therapist typically treated clients in person. Now, many speech therapists offer services online via telecommunication. Telepractice services should offer the same quality as in-person services and be held to ASHA’s standards for ethical practices, according to the organization.

Instead of visiting an office or going to a facility, you’ll work with a speech therapist over a live video session, which is considered synchronous care.

Other types of telepractice include asynchronous care—which is when images, audio, clips or data is sent between a patient and therapist for viewing and evaluation at a later time—and hybrid care, which combines different types of care and could be a mix of synchronous care, asynchronous care, remote monitoring with wearable devices and apps or in-person care.

There are several different platforms that host online speech therapy services and connect speech therapists with people who need them.

Working together online can have benefits for you and the speech therapist. “Location does not dictate therapy options any longer,” says Tara Roehl, a speech-language pathologist who operates a private telepractice clinic in Colorado.

If you need a speech therapist who specializes in a certain type of therapy or has expertise working with certain conditions, you’re not limited to those in your area. The wider online pool makes it more likely for people to get the specialized help they need.

Eliminating travel also makes it easier to attend regular sessions, especially for those with mobility and transportation issues. Jessie L. Ginsburg, a speech-language pathologist and CEO of Pediatric Therapy Playhouse in Los Angeles, says she sees higher attendance rates for online therapy in her clinic, and parents are more likely to sit next to their child during online sessions and participate.

Research suggests it’s effective, too. Online practice is still relatively new in the world of speech therapy, but there is promising research. A 2020 systematic review in Perspectives examined literature on adult telepractice services from 2014 to 2019, concluding that there’s evidence to support continuing to use speech therapy telepractice for adults, but more research is needed on its effectiveness [2] Weidner K, Lowman J. Telepractice for adult speech-language pathology services: a systematic review . Perspect ASHA SIGs. 2020;5(1):326-338. .

“In some of the research that I’ve done, we showed that not only did telemedicine increase access to therapy, but the outcomes in cognitive rehabilitation were equal to if not slightly better than in-person outcomes,” says Lindsay R. James Riegler, Ph.D., a research speech-language pathologist and innovation specialist at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center.

Additionally, experts note many speech therapists who provide in-person care already utilize apps and other online programs to supplement their sessions, making the transition from in-person care to telecare more seamless.

There are limitations to what online therapy can do, and telepractice can’t replace some in-person evaluations and treatment sessions, states the ASHA.

Some therapy approaches, such as touch cues (which are used in speech therapy to show correct placement to produce certain sounds), have to be done in person, notes Ginsburg. “We might use touch cues externally on the face or lips, such as touching a finger to the lips to cue a child for the ‘m’ sound,” she explains. A therapist may also need to be physically present to observe certain facial or throat movements.

If you struggle with concentrating and engaging with a screen, online speech therapy could be more challenging. The same applies if you aren’t tech savvy and have issues using online tools. Other barriers to virtual appointments include patients with audiovisual deficits as well as those with limited internet access, in which case in-person sessions may be more beneficial.

Audio quality can also be an issue, says Evan Kennedy, a speech-language pathologist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. “In my work with professional singers, small differences in tone quality really matter.”

Experts advise evaluating both the service or program and the speech therapist you’ll work with through the platform.

Look at the therapist’s licenses and whether or not the platform is HIPAA compliant, advises Aaron Rothbart, a speech-language pathologist and current doctoral student at the University of Oregon.

There’s no universal speech-language pathologist license, so professionals get licensed in the state where they practice. The ASHA tracks state guidelines, many of which require speech-language pathologists to be licensed in the state where they practice, which means if they’re providing services to a client in another state, they must be licensed in that state as well.

If the provider isn’t licensed in the state where they’re providing services, an insurance company isn’t going to reimburse them, according to Riegler.

In addition to their licenses, consider what their focus is in terms of treatment as well as their patient population.

Parents looking for speech therapy services for their children should find the right therapist who has expertise in the area they need, rather than searching for the right company, advises Ginsburg. The same goes for adults.

“It is completely acceptable and expected to interview your therapist to see if it is a good fit for you,” says Roehl. She recommends asking:

  • How long have you been doing telepractice?
  • What training do you have in telepractice?
  • What training do you have that’s relevant for my speech therapy goals?
  • What can I expect to experience in a typical session?

Sesame Care Virtual Speech Therapy

With virtual sessions that fit your schedule and lifestyle, Sesame Care makes it easy to prioritize your speech therapy needs.

Forbes Health selected the following online speech therapy providers, as they check most (or all) of the boxes based on expert recommendations, including HIPAA compliance, licensed therapists in good standing with their state licensing board, speech therapists with specialized training and the ability to go through insurance. Many also offer a free consultation.

  • Better Speech is HIPAA compliant, offers speech therapists for adults and children in a wide range of specialties, works with some insurance carriers and has a private pay option with the potential for financial aid.
  • Connected Speech Pathology says its therapists have a minimum of five years experience and master’s degrees in speech-language pathology. The platform offers services for adults and children, transgender voice therapy and specialized services for those with Parkinson’s, aphasia, brain injuries and more. It does not take insurance, but the starting rate is $75 per session.
  • Great Speech has over 50 highly specialized therapists in a variety of areas, according to the company. Each has a master’s degree or higher in speech-language pathology. The platform is also HIPAA compliant and works with an array of insurance providers.
  • Expressable has services for adults and children, and its therapists all hold a master’s degree or higher, according to the company. It also works with insurance providers, health savings accounts and flexible savings accounts and allows for private payment options.

Experts note that before selecting a speech therapist, it’s important to work with your physician. They can help refer you to a speech therapist, and often also work with speech therapists to ensure optimal medical management as well—for example, prescribing medication if needed and being aware of certain complications that may arise (like those associated with swallowing issues).

Online speech therapy might not be right for every person or situation, but “when it is provided by an experienced and well-trained speech-language pathologist, it can be, and is expected to be, equal to or better than in-person services,” says Roehl.

Any questions?

Communication is one of our most vital, life-long skills. Speech therapy can help children reach communication milestones appropriate for their age; clearly articulate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; comprehend the language of others; and develop socially. It also contributes to their academic success and emotional well-being. Plus so much more!

The first step is to schedule an evaluation with a speech therapist. They’ll assess your child’s communication development and make a professional recommendation as to whether your child could benefit from speech therapy.

There is no minimum age. Communication skills begin developing in infancy. Building strong language skills in very young children can set the foundation for strong communication and literacy skills later on. Speech therapy is particularly important for children who aren’t reaching age-appropriate communication milestones, or who are experiencing difficulties such as stuttering or a lisp. Because speech and language patterns become more ingrained over time, the earlier speech errors can be corrected, the better the outcomes are likely to be.

The duration of speech therapy is different for everyone, and it depends on several factors. This includes the type of speech disorder or communication challenge, the frequency of speech therapy sessions, how often you and your child practice the skills taught in speech therapy at home, your child’s age, any underlying medical conditions, and more.

Most children love online speech therapy! Many become more attentive with online learning, and they prefer the interactivity of online exercises and communication. Plus, there are many effective strategies that speech therapists use to engage children online. Expressable’s model of care also focuses on the most important component of improving children’s speech and language skills: the involvement of their parent or caregiver. When parents are actively involved in their child’s care, that leads to faster progress. Our therapists work directly with caregivers to teach them techniques and strategies they can use in their child’s everyday life.

Speech therapy sessions are focused on each client’s care plan, and the activities done during sessions always relate to those goals. So, if a person is in speech therapy to better pronounce the /s/ sound, they’ll begin by learning how to make the sound by itself and work up to practicing it in conversation. Or if someone wants to improve the quality of their voice, their speech therapist will teach them appropriate breathing and vocal exercises. The therapist will aim to do as many trials of each exercise as possible, in order to make the most of each session.

Your speech therapist will constantly be measuring and assessing your response to these exercises. When needed, they’ll make changes to your treatment plan to help you make progress as quickly as possible. Regardless of your goals, your speech therapist will always provide practice activities to complete at home between sessions.

Expressable currently accepts many of the largest insurance companies, and we’re actively working on contracting with new plans across the country. We also offer affordable private pay options and accept HSAs/FSAs for those who do not have insurance coverage or prefer to pay out-of-pocket.

At SpeechTherapyByPro, we are speech therapists. We've learned what works well with clients, so we've designed our speech therapy worksheets with what we've learned along the way.

Our speech therapy worksheets were built to streamline your speech therapy practice and better help your clients. Each worksheet can be used for all of your clients and saved on your computer or in the cloud for easy access.

Creating custom worksheets by a professional graphic designer can cost you hours of time and typically $30 to $100+ per hour in design costs, which quickly add up. Our speech therapy worksheets sell in bulk to speech therapists around the world, so we are able to offer our templates at low costs.

Yes! Our bundles were created to save you money. We will continually add new bundles we have strategically put together to help you help your speech therapy clients.

Once you purchase a worksheet, you are licensed for life for one speech therapist. If your business has more than one speech therapist, we ask that you use the honor system and purchase the correct number you need. Your access to download your speech therapy worksheets never expires.

Each worksheet purchase licenses 1 speech therapist the ability to use with all their clients. If you need worksheets for more than 1 speech therapist, you'll need to purchase multiple copies.

Our speech therapy worksheets in PDF format were created to be fillable by you or your clients.

Our worksheets can be used on any electronic device that has a PDF viewer downloaded (these are usually free). This includes: iPhone, Android devices, computers, laptops, tablets, and more.

Due to the nature of how PDFs work, you won't be able to edit the document directly. However, we do provide a 3rd party website if you need to make text edits to your worksheet in your invoice instructions once you make a purchase.

All sales are final and SpeechTherapyByPro enforces a strict no-refund policy. This is due to the immediate nature of delivery of the digital downloads upon purchase- you will get instant access to the documents and can see all language in the documents therefore we cannot offer any money back. However, you can see exactly what pages are included in each product if you scroll down.

All of that being said, 99.8% of our clients never request a refund. Our help line email info @ speechtherapybypro.com is able to help the other .2% almost always to resolve lingering questions + problems without issue.

While we don't take on custom worksheet projects, we do take suggestions for future worksheets! We have received many recommendations and have created many new worksheets as a result. Have an idea for worksheets you think would benefit other speech therapists? Reach out to us at info @ speechtherapybypro.com

Helping Families Find Qualified Speech Therapist In Their Area.

My son wasn't saying much by the age of 2. We started looking for a speech therapist in our area and were lucky enough to get an appointment. They have been working with our son for a year now and he's starting to progress in speech. He was diagnosed to Apraxia of Speech and so they have been working with him 3 days a week now.

Find Speech Therapy Near You

You might be looking for a speech therapist who specializes in Apraxia of Speech or delayed speech and don’t know where to start. Your child’s doctor may have references of speech therapist in your area who are qualified and who are taking on new clients. Depending on your area, speech therapy clinics fill up quickly. With the increase in demand for speech therapy it may be difficult to find a practice that is open to new clients and who may have a waiting list.

You are probably asking yourself “ Where can I find speech therapy near me? ”

Just like most people, they don’t know where to start to find a qualified speech therapist. This could be a new journey for you if you are looking for a speech therapist for your first born. Just like our family our first born son needed a speech therapist and we found one by searching our local area. If you did search for “Speech Therapy Near Me” be sure you really do your research as the results you see might not be the best results. A speech therapy practice that is closer to you may not be as well reviewed as one that is further away. Also check to see if they offer the services you need. Our son was diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech and needed specialized care.

You can read more about Childhood Apraxia of Speech here .

After your child has been in speech therapy for some time, you might notice other parents asking you “how do I find a good speech therapist near me?” We have friends in other states who have asked us this same question after knowing our son was going through this process. Its definitely a learning process for everyone. How do you deal with your child’s lack of speech, how do you find a qualified speech therapist, where do you start?

The purpose of our website is to help parents and individual learn where to start in this journey of speech therapy. There are many speech therapy clinics vying for your business, but not all of them are as well reviewed or have the services you may require. For instance, does your child need help feeding themselves, dressing themselves, walking up or downstairs? Depending on their age they may need Occupational Therapy (OT) which is something not all speech therapy clinics offer and is a completely different therapy altogether.

Look for your state from the above map and within those pages you can find your city or a city near you that will show speech therapists near you.

These speech therapy clinics will help you, answer any questions you may have and will help setup your appointment.

What Clients Say

I’ve been working with Marcia as part of my treatment plan to correct my tongue tie and TMJ. Marcia seems passionate about her work and she is very knowledgeable. I never have to wait for my appointment to start. During my appointment she is attentive to my feedback. She encourages me as I’m making progress. At first, I wasn’t sure why speech/myofunctional therapy was so important in my care plan, but now I understand working with Marcia has helped me get the most out of my treatment.

You have chronic neck pain, headaches, snoring, or jaw pain. You might have trouble chewing, speaking, or breathing through their nose. Maybe you can't stick your tongue out of your mouth or maybe you can't lift your tongue without moving your jaw. Orofacial myofunctional therapy helps relieve jaw pain, decrease tension in the upper body, and re-train how you use your muscles for breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speaking.
