Whether you’re an experienced presenter or a novice, the right techniques will let your presentation skills soar to new heights!
From public speaking hacks to interactive elements and storytelling prowess, these 9 effective presentation techniques will empower you to leave a lasting impression on your audience and make your presentations unforgettable.
1. Confidence and positive body language
Positive body language instantly captivates your audience, making them believe in your message as much as you do. Strengthen your stage presence and own that stage like it’s your second home! Stand tall, shoulders back and exude confidence.
2. Eye contact with the audience
Break down that invisible barrier and connect with your audience through their eyes. Maintaining eye contact when giving a presentation builds trust and shows that you’re present and engaged with them.
3. Effective use of hand gestures and movement
A little movement goes a long way! Emphasize key points with purposeful gestures and don’t be afraid to walk around the stage. Your energy will be contagious!
4. Utilize storytelling techniques
Weave the magic of storytelling into your presentation. Share relatable anecdotes, inspiring success stories or even personal experiences that tug at the heartstrings of your audience. Adjust your pitch, pace and volume to match the emotions and intensity of the story. Varying your speaking voice adds depth and enhances your stage presence.
![make do presentation make do presentation](https://venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2023/07/image-67-814x1024.png)
5. Incorporate multimedia elements
Spice up your presentation with a dash of visual pizzazz! Use slides, images and video clips to add depth and clarity to your message. Just remember, less is more—don’t overwhelm them with information overload.
Turn your presentations into an interactive party! Involve your audience with questions, polls or group activities. When they actively participate, they become invested in your presentation’s success. Bring your design to life with animated elements. Venngage allows you to apply animations to icons, images and text to create dynamic and engaging visual content.
6. Utilize humor strategically
Laughter is the best medicine—and a fantastic presentation enhancer! A well-placed joke or lighthearted moment can break the ice and create a warm atmosphere , making your audience more receptive to your message.
7. Practice active listening and respond to feedback
Be attentive to your audience’s reactions and feedback. If they have questions or concerns, address them with genuine interest and respect. Your responsiveness builds rapport and shows that you genuinely care about their experience.
![make do presentation make do presentation](https://venngage-wordpress.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2023/07/image-72-814x1024.png)
8. Apply the 10-20-30 rule
Apply the 10-20-30 presentation rule and keep it short, sweet and impactful! Stick to ten slides, deliver your presentation within 20 minutes and use a 30-point font to ensure clarity and focus. Less is more, and your audience will thank you for it!
9. Implement the 5-5-5 rule
Simplicity is key. Limit each slide to five bullet points, with only five words per bullet point and allow each slide to remain visible for about five seconds. This rule keeps your presentation concise and prevents information overload.
Simple presentations are more engaging because they are easier to follow. Summarize your presentations and keep them simple with Venngage’s gallery of simple presentation templates and ensure that your message is delivered effectively across your audience.

PRESENTATION IDEAS
The art of digital storytelling: Engage and thrill on screen.
Genially in a nutshell
How do I make a presentation interactive and how does Genially work? Find the answers to all of your slide-related questions here!
What’s an interactive presentation?
Interactive slides contain clickable hotspots, links, buttons, and animations that are activated at the touch of a button. Instead of reading or watching passively, your audience can actively interact with the content.
Genially’s interaction presentation software allows you to combine text, photos, video clips, audio and other content in one deck. It’s a great way to condense more information into fewer slides.
If you’re a teacher, you can share multiple materials in one single learning resource. Students can create their own projects using digital media and online maps. For business or training, try embedding spreadsheet data, PDFs, and online content directly in your slides.
An interactive slide deck is more user-friendly than a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or Google Slides document. That’s because you can break information down into chunks with pop-ups, labels, voiceovers and annotated infographics.
The other benefit of interactive content is increased engagement. It’s easier to keep your audience’s attention when they’re actively participating. Try Genially’s presentation software and free slideshow maker to see how it’s better than other presentation websites. You won’t go back to standard presentation apps!
How do you make a clickable slide?
The best way to make slides clickable is to use Genially’s free interactive presentation program. Design your slide then apply an interaction. In a couple of clicks, you can add popup windows, hyperlinks, close-up images, games, animations, multimedia and other content.
Choose from the library of hotspot buttons and icons to show people what to click on. Go to Presenter View to get a preview and see how your content will appear to your audience.
How do I create presentations that look professional?
You’ve got a deadline looming and you’re staring at the screen with a blank presentation. We’ve all been there! Starting a presentation design from scratch is tricky, especially if you’re short on time.
Genially’s free online presentation maker has over 2000 ready-to-use templates for professional slide presentations, photos slideshows, and more. Each slide design has been created by our team of top graphic designers. No need to worry about fonts, centering images, or designing a matching color scheme. It’s all done for you.
Start by browsing our layouts and themes for education, business and then customize with your own text and images.
How do I share or download my slides?
Because Genially is a cloud based presentation software, you can simply share the link to your slides. Like other online presentation tools, there are no files to download or store on your computer. Everything is saved online.
When you publish your slide deck, it gets its own unique url, just like a website. Share the link with others to let them explore the content in their own time. If you’re presenting live, just click the Present button.
You can also embed your presentation on your website, company wiki, or social media. Genially is compatible with WordPress, Moodle, Google Classroom, and other platforms. If you use an LMS, you can also download your interactive design slides in SCORM format.
For slideshow videos and slideshows with music, share online or download as an MP4 video. Check out our free slideshow templates for ideas.

Make A Presentation Or Do A Presentation – Which Is Correct?
![make do presentation](https://www.presentationskills.me/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Make-A-Presentation-Or-Do-A-Presentation.jpg)
When it comes to giving presentations, there is a lot of confusion about whether you should “make” a presentation or “do” a presentation. Both are correct, but they have different meanings.
The terms “make” and “do have different meanings depending on the context in which they are used. In general, “make” is used when creating something new, while “do” is used when performing an action
Definition Of Terms
In the context of presentations, “make” means to create a presentation from scratch, while “do” means to deliver a presentation that someone else has created.
Here is an example:
You will need to make a presentation for your sales team tomorrow. This means that you will have to create the presentation from scratch.
On the other hand, if your boss asks you to do a presentation, this means that he or she has already created the presentation and wants you to deliver it.
Both “make” and “do” can be used when referring to the act of giving a presentation, but they have different implications.
Which Is Correct?
Both of these terms are correct if you use them in the proper context. Interchanging them might lead to misinformation or confusion. Make sure you understand the meaning of each term before using it.
If you want to avoid any confusion, it is best to stick to using “deliver” when referring to giving a presentation. This term can be used regardless of whether you created the presentation or not.
Final Thoughts
Giving presentations can be nerve-wracking, but it is important to choose the right term when referring to the task at hand. “Make” and “do” both have their place, but using the wrong one can lead to confusion. We hope this article has cleared things up for you. Thanks for reading!

How to Make a PowerPoint Presentation (Step-by-Step)
- PowerPoint Tutorials
- Presentation Design
- January 22, 2024
In this beginner’s guide, you will learn step-by-step how to make a PowerPoint presentation from scratch.
While PowerPoint is designed to be intuitive and accessible, it can be overwhelming if you’ve never gotten any training on it before. As you progress through this guide, you’ll will learn how to move from blank slides to PowerPoint slides that look like these.
![make do presentation Example of the six slides you'll learn how to create in this tutorial](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-48.jpg)
Table of Contents
Additionally, as you create your presentation, you’ll also learn tricks for working more efficiently in PowerPoint, including how to:
- Change the slide order
- Reset your layout
- Change the slide dimensions
- Use PowerPoint Designer
- Format text
- Format objects
- Play a presentation (slide show)
With this knowledge under your belt, you’ll be ready to start creating PowerPoint presentations. Moreover, you’ll have taken your skills from beginner to proficient in no time at all. I will also include links to more advanced PowerPoint topics.
Ready to start learning how to make a PowerPoint presentation?
Take your PPT skills to the next level
Start with a blank presentation.
Note: Before you open PowerPoint and start creating your presentation, make sure you’ve collected your thoughts. If you’re going to make your slides compelling, you need to spend some time brainstorming.
For help with this, see our article with tips for nailing your business presentation here .
The first thing you’ll need to do is to open PowerPoint. When you do, you are shown the Start Menu , with the Home tab open.
This is where you can choose either a blank theme (1) or a pre-built theme (2). You can also choose to open an existing presentation (3).
For now, go ahead and click on the Blank Presentation (1) thumbnail.
![make do presentation In the backstage view of PowerPoint you can create a new blank presentation, use a template, or open a recent file](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-1.jpg)
Doing so launches a brand new and blank presentation for you to work with. Before you start adding content to your presentation, let’s first familiarize ourselves with the PowerPoint interface.
The PowerPoint interface
![make do presentation Picture of the different parts of the PowerPoint layout, including the Ribbon, thumbnail view, quick access toolbar, notes pane, etc.](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-2.jpg)
Here is how the program is laid out:
- The Application Header
- The Ribbon (including the Ribbon tabs)
- The Quick Access Toolbar (either above or below the Ribbon)
- The Slides Pane (slide thumbnails)
The Slide Area
The notes pane.
- The Status Bar (including the View Buttons)
Each one of these areas has options for viewing certain parts of the PowerPoint environment and formatting your presentation.
Below are the important things to know about certain elements of the PowerPoint interface.
The PowerPoint Ribbon
![make do presentation The PowerPoint Ribbon in the Microsoft Office Suite](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-3.1.jpg)
The Ribbon is contextual. That means that it will adapt to what you’re doing in the program.
For example, the Font, Paragraph and Drawing options are greyed out until you select something that has text in it, as in the example below (A).
![make do presentation Example of the Shape Format tab in PowerPoint and all of the subsequent commands assoicated with that tab](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-4.jpg)
Furthermore, if you start manipulating certain objects, the Ribbon will display additional tabs, as seen above (B), with more commands and features to help you work with those objects. The following objects have their own additional tabs in the Ribbon which are hidden until you select them:
- Online Pictures
- Screenshots
- Screen Recording
The Slides Pane
![make do presentation The slides pane in PowerPoint is on the left side of your workspace](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-5.jpg)
This is where you can preview and rearrange all the slides in your presentation.
Right-clicking on a slide in the pane gives you additional options on the slide level that you won’t find on the Ribbon, such as Duplicate Slide , Delete Slide , and Hide Slide .
![make do presentation Right clicking a PowerPoint slide in the thumbnail view gives you a variety of options like adding new slides, adding sections, changing the layout, etc.](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-6.jpg)
In addition, you can add sections to your presentation by right-clicking anywhere in this Pane and selecting Add Section . Sections are extremely helpful in large presentations, as they allow you to organize your slides into chunks that you can then rearrange, print or display differently from other slides.
![make do presentation Content added to your PowerPoint slides will only display if it's on the slide area, marked here by the letter A](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-7.jpg)
The Slide Area (A) is where you will build out your slides. Anything within the bounds of this area will be visible when you present or print your presentation.
Anything outside of this area (B) will be hidden from view. This means that you can place things here, such as instructions for each slide, without worrying about them being shown to your audience.
![make do presentation The notes pane in PowerPoint is located at the bottom of your screen and is where you can type your speaker notes](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-8.jpg)
The Notes Pane is the space beneath the Slide Area where you can type in the speaker notes for each slide. It’s designed as a fast way to add and edit your slides’ talking points.
To expand your knowledge and learn more about adding, printing, and exporting your PowerPoint speaker notes, read our guide here .
Your speaker notes are visible when you print your slides using the Notes Pages option and when you use the Presenter View . To expand your knowledge and learn the ins and outs of using the Presenter View , read our guide here .
![make do presentation You can click and drag to resize the notes pane at the bottom of your PowerPoint screen](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-9.jpg)
You can resize the Notes Pane by clicking on its edge and dragging it up or down (A). You can also minimize or reopen it by clicking on the Notes button in the Status Bar (B).
Note: Not all text formatting displays in the Notes Pane, even though it will show up when printing your speaker notes. To learn more about printing PowerPoint with notes, read our guide here .
Now that you have a basic grasp of the PowerPoint interface at your disposal, it’s time to make your presentation.
Adding Content to Your PowerPoint Presentation
Notice that in the Slide Area , there are two rectangles with dotted outlines. These are called Placeholders and they’re set on the template in the Slide Master View .
To expand your knowledge and learn how to create a PowerPoint template of your own (which is no small task), read our guide here .
![make do presentation Click into your content placeholders and start typing text, just as the prompt suggests](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-10.jpg)
As the prompt text suggests, you can click into each placeholder and start typing text. These types of placeholder prompts are customizable too. That means that if you are using a company template, it might say something different, but the functionality is the same.
![make do presentation Example of typing text into a content placeholder in PowerPoint](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-11.jpg)
Note: For the purposes of this example, I will create a presentation based on the content in the Starbucks 2018 Global Social Impact Report, which is available to the public on their website.
If you type in more text than there is room for, PowerPoint will automatically reduce its font size. You can stop this behavior by clicking on the Autofit Options icon to the left of the placeholder and selecting Stop Fitting Text to this Placeholder .
Next, you can make formatting adjustments to your text by selecting the commands in the Font area and the Paragraph area of the Home tab of the Ribbon.
![make do presentation Use the formatting options on the Home tab to choose the formatting of your text](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-12.1.jpg)
The Reset Command: If you make any changes to your title and decide you want to go back to how it was originally, you can use the Reset button up in the Home tab .
![make do presentation Hitting the reset command on the home tab resets your slide formatting to match your template](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-13.jpg)
Insert More Slides into Your Presentation
Now that you have your title slide filled in, it’s time to add more slides. To do that, simply go up to the Home tab and click on New Slide . This inserts a new slide in your presentation right after the one you were on.
![make do presentation To insert a new slide in PowerPoint, on the home tab click the New Slide command](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-14.jpg)
You can alternatively hit Ctrl+M on your keyboard to insert a new blank slide in PowerPoint. To learn more about this shortcut, see my guide on using Ctrl+M in PowerPoint .
Instead of clicking the New Slide command, you can also open the New Slide dropdown to see all the slide layouts in your PowerPoint template. Depending on who created your template, your layouts in this dropdown can be radically different.
![make do presentation Opening the new slide dropdown you can see all the slide layouts in your PowerPoint template](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-15.jpg)
If you insert a layout and later want to change it to a different layout, you can use the Layout dropdown instead of the New Slide dropdown.
After inserting a few different slide layouts, your presentation might look like the following picture. Don’t worry that it looks blank, next we will start adding content to your presentation.
![make do presentation Example of a number of different blank slide layouts inserting in a PowerPoint presentation](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-16.jpg)
If you want to follow along exactly with me, your five slides should be as follows:
- Title Slide
- Title and Content
- Section Header
- Two Content
- Picture with Caption
Adding Content to Your Slides
Now let’s go into each slide and start adding our content. You’ll notice some new types of placeholders.
![make do presentation Use the icons within a content placeholder to insert things like tables, charts, SmartArt, Pictures, etc.](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-17.jpg)
On slide 2 we have a Content Placeholder , which allows you to add any kind of content. That includes:
- A SmartArt graphic,
- A 3D object,
- A picture from the web,
- Or an icon.
To insert text, simply type it in or hit Ctrl+C to Copy and Ctrl+V to Paste from elsewhere. To insert any of the other objects, click on the appropriate icon and follow the steps to insert it.
For my example, I’ll simply type in some text as you can see in the picture below.
![make do presentation Example typing bulleted text in a content placeholder in PowerPoint](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-18.jpg)
Slides 3 and 4 only have text placeholders, so I’ll go ahead and add in my text into each one.
![make do presentation Examples of text typed into a divider slide and a title and content slide in PowerPoint](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-19.jpg)
On slide 5 we have a Picture Placeholder . That means that the only elements that can go into it are:
- A picture from the web
![make do presentation A picture placeholder in PowerPoint can only take an image or an icon](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-20.jpg)
To insert a picture into the picture placeholder, simply:
- Click on the Picture icon
- Find a picture on your computer and select it
- Click on Insert
Alternatively, if you already have a picture open somewhere else, you can select the placeholder and paste in (shortcut: Ctrl+V ) the picture. You can also drag the picture in from a file explorer window.
![make do presentation To insert a picture into a picture placeholder, click the picture icon, find your picture on your computer and click insert](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-21.jpg)
If you do not like the background of the picture you inserted onto your slide, you can remove the background here in PowerPoint. To see how to do this, read my guide here .
Placeholders aren’t the only way to add content to your slides. At any point, you can use the Insert tab to add elements to your slides.
You can use either the Title Only or the Blank slide layout to create slides for content that’s different. For example, a three-layout content slide, or a single picture divider slide, as shown below.
![make do presentation Example slides using PowerPoint icons and background pictures](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-22.jpg)
In the first example above, I’ve inserted 6 text boxes, 3 icons, and 3 circles to create this layout. In the second example, I’ve inserted a full-sized picture and then 2 shapes and 2 text boxes.
The Reset Command: Because these slides are built with shapes and text boxes (and not placeholders), hitting the Reset button up in the Home tab won’t do anything.
That is a good thing if you don’t want your layouts to adjust. However, it does mean that it falls on you to make sure everything is aligned and positioned correctly.

Using Designer to generate more layouts ideas
If you have Office 365, your version of PowerPoint comes with a new feature called Designer (or Design Ideas). This is a feature that generates slide layout ideas for you. The coolest thing about this feature is that it uses the content you already have.
To use Designer , simply navigate to the Design tab in your Ribbon, and click on Design Ideas .

NOTE: If the PowerPoint Designer is not working for you (it is grey out), see my troubleshooting guide for Designer .
Change the Overall Design (optional)
When you make a PowerPoint presentation, you’ll want to think about the overall design. Now that you have some content in your presentation, you can use the Design tab to change the look and feel of your slides.
For additional help thinking through the design of your presentation, read my guide here .
A. Picking your PowerPoint slide size
If you have PowerPoint 2013 or later, when you create a blank document in PowerPoint, you automatically start with a widescreen layout with a 16:9 ratio. These dimensions are suitable for most presentations as they match the screens of most computers and projectors.
However, you do have the option to change the dimensions.
For example, your presentation might not be presented, but instead converted into a PDF or printed and distributed. In that case, you can easily switch to the standard dimensions with a 4:3 ratio by selecting from the dropdown (A).
You can also choose a custom slide size or change the slide orientation from landscape to portrait in the Custom Slide Size dialog box (B).
![make do presentation To change your slide size, click the Design tab, open the slide size dropdown and choose a size or custom slide size](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-24.jpg)
To learn all about the different PowerPoint slide sizes, and some of the issues you will face when changing the slide size of a non-blank presentation, read my guide here .
B. Selecting a PowerPoint theme
The next thing you can do is change the theme of your presentation to a pre-built one. For a detailed explanation of what a PowerPoint theme is, and how to best use it, read my article here .
In the beginning of this tutorial, we started with a blank presentation, which uses the default Office theme as you can see in the picture below.
![make do presentation All PowerPoint presentations start with the default Microsoft Office theme](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-25.jpg)
That gives you the most flexibility because it has a blank background and quite simple layouts that work for most presentations. However, it also means that it’s your responsibility to enhance the design.
If you’re comfortable with this, you can stay with the default theme or create your own custom theme ( read my guide here ). But if you would rather not have to think about design, then you can choose a pre-designed theme.
Microsoft provides 46 other pre-built themes, which include slide layouts, color variants and palettes, and fonts. Each one varies quite significantly, so make sure you look through them carefully.
To select a different theme, go to the Design tab in the Ribbon, and click on the dropdown arrow in the Themes section .
![make do presentation On the Design tab you will find all of the default PowerPoint templates that come with the Microsoft Office Suite](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-26.jpg)
For this tutorial, let’s select the Frame theme and then choose the third Variant in the theme. Doing so changes the layout, colors, and fonts of your presentation.
![make do presentation Example choosing the Frame PowerPoint theme and the third variant of this powerpoint presentation](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-27.jpg)
Note: The theme dropdown area is also where you can import or save custom themes. To see my favorite places to find professional PowerPoint templates and themes (and recommendations for why I like them), read my guide here .
C. How to change a slide background in PowerPoint
The next thing to decide is how you want your background to look for the entire presentation. In the Variants area, you can see four background options.
![make do presentation To change the background style of your presentation, on the Design tab, find the Background Styles options and choose a style](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-28.jpg)
For this example, we want our presentation to have a dark background, so let’s select Style 3. When you do so, you’ll notice that:
- The background color automatically changes across all slides
- The color of the text on most of the slides automatically changes to white so that it’s visible on the dark background
- The colors of the objects on slides #6 and #7 also adjust, in a way we may not want (we’ll likely have to make some manual adjustments to these slides)
![make do presentation What our PowerPoint presentation looks like now that we have selected a theme, a variant, and a background style](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-29.jpg)
Note: If you want to change the slide background for just that one slide, don’t left-click the style. Instead, right-click it and select Apply to Selected Slides .
After you change the background for your entire presentation, you can easily adjust the background for an individual slide.
![make do presentation You can either right-click a PowerPoint slide and select format background or navigate to the design tab and click the format background command](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-30.jpg)
Inside the Format Background pane, you can see you have the following options:
- Gradient fill
- Picture or texture fill
- Pattern fill
- Hide background
You can explore these options to find the PowerPoint background that best fits your presentation.
D. How to change your color palette in PowerPoint
Another thing you may want to adjust in your presentation, is the color scheme. In the picture below you can see the Theme Colors we are currently using for this presentation.
![make do presentation Example of the theme colors we are currently using with this presentation](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-32.1.jpg)
Each PowerPoint theme comes with its own color palette. By default, the Office theme includes the Office color palette. This affects the colors you are presented with when you format any element within your presentation (text, shapes, SmartArt, etc.).
![make do presentation To change the theme color for your presentation, select the Design tab, open the Colors options and choose the colors you want to use](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-33.jpg)
The good news is that the colors here are easy to change. To switch color palettes, simply:
- Go to the Design tab in the Ribbon
- In the Variants area, click on the dropdown arrow and select Colors
- Select the color palette (or theme colors) you want
You can choose among the pre-built color palettes from Office, or you can customize them to create your own.
As you build your presentation, make sure you use the colors from your theme to format objects. That way, changing the color palette adjusts all the colors in your presentation automatically.
E. How to change your fonts in PowerPoint
Just as we changed the color palette, you can do the same for the fonts.
![make do presentation Example of custom theme fonts that might come with a powerpoint template](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-34.jpg)
Each PowerPoint theme comes with its own font combination. By default, the Office theme includes the Office font pairing. This affects the fonts that are automatically assigned to all text in your presentation.
![make do presentation To change the default fonts for your presentation, from the design tab, find the fonts dropdown and select the pair of fonts you want to use](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-35.jpg)
The good news is that the font pairings are easy to change. To switch your Theme Fonts, simply:
- Go to the Design tab in the Ribbon
- Click on the dropdown arrow in the Variants area
- Select Fonts
- Select the font pairing you want
You can choose among the pre-built fonts from Office, or you can customize them to create your own.
If you are working with PowerPoint presentations on both Mac and PC computers, make sure you choose a safe PowerPoint font. To see a list of the safest PowerPoint fonts, read our guide here .
If you receive a PowerPoint presentation and the wrong fonts were used, you can use the Replace Fonts dialog box to change the fonts across your entire presentation. For details, read our guide here .
Adding Animations & Transitions (optional)
The final step to make a PowerPoint presentation compelling, is to consider using animations and transitions. These are by no means necessary to a good presentation, but they may be helpful in your situation.
A. Adding PowerPoint animations
PowerPoint has an incredibly robust animations engine designed to power your creativity. That being said, it’s also easy to get started with basic animations.
Animations are movements that you can apply to individual objects on your slide.
![make do presentation To add an animation to an object in PowerPoint, first select the object and then use the Animations tab to select an animation type](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-36.jpg)
To add a PowerPoint animation to an element of your slide, simply:
- Select the element
- Go to the Animations tab in the Ribbon
- Click on the dropdown arrow to view your options
- Select the animation you want
You can add animations to multiple objects at one time by selecting them all first and then applying the animation.
B. How to preview a PowerPoint animation
![make do presentation There are three ways to preview a PowerPoint animation](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-37.jpg)
There are three ways to preview a PowerPoint animation:
- Click on the Preview button in the Animations tab
- Click on the little star next to the slide
- Play the slide in Slide Show Mode
To learn other ways to run your slide show, see our guide on presenting a PowerPoint slide show with shortcuts .
To adjust the settings of your animations, explore the options in the Effect Options , Advanced Animation and the Timing areas of the Animation tab .
![make do presentation The Animations tab allows you to adjust the effects and timings of your animations in PowerPoint](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-38.jpg)
Note: To see how to make objects appear and disappear in your slides by clicking a button, read our guide here .
C. How to manage your animations in PowerPoint
![make do presentation You can see the animations applied to your objects by the little numbers in the upper right-hand corner of the objects](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-40.jpg)
The best way to manage lots of animations on your slide is with the Animation Pane . To open it, simply:
- Navigate to the Animations tab
- Select the Animation Pane
Inside the Animation Pane, you’ll see all of the different animations that have been applied to objects on your slide, with their numbers marked as pictured above.
Note: To see examples of PowerPoint animations that can use in PowerPoint, see our list of PowerPoint animation tutorials here .
D. How to add transitions to your PowerPoint presentation
PowerPoint has an incredibly robust transition engine so that you can dictate how your slides change from one to the other. It is also extremely easy to add transitions to your slides.
In PowerPoint, transitions are the movements (or effects) you see as you move between two slides.
![make do presentation To add a transition to a slide, select the slide, navigate to the transitions tab in PowerPoint and select your transition](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-41.jpg)
To add a transition to a PowerPoint slide, simply:
- Select the slide
- Go to the Transitions tab in the Ribbon
- In the Transitions to This Slide area, click on the dropdown arrow to view your options
- Select the transition you want
To adjust the settings of the transition, explore the options in the Timing area of the Transitions tab.
You can also add the same transition to multiple slides. To do that, select them in the Slides Pane and apply the transition.
E. How to preview a transition in PowerPoint
![make do presentation There are three ways to preview a transition in PowerPoint](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-42.jpg)
There are three ways to preview your PowerPoint transitions (just like your animations):
- Click on the Preview button in the Transitions tab
- Click on the little star beneath the slide number in the thumbnail view
Note: In 2016, PowerPoint added a cool new transition, called Morph. It operates a bit differently from other transitions. For a detailed tutorial on how to use the cool Morph transition, see our step-by-step article here .
Save Your PowerPoint Presentation
After you’ve built your presentation and made all the adjustments to your slides, you’ll want to save your presentation. YOu can do this several different ways.
![make do presentation Click the file tab, select Save As, choose where you want to save your presentation and then click save](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-43.jpg)
To save a PowerPoint presentation using your Ribbon, simply:
- Navigate to the File tab
- Select Save As on the left
- Choose where you want to save your presentation
- Name your presentation and/or adjust your file type settings
- Click Save
You can alternatively use the Ctrl+S keyboard shortcut to save your presentation. I recommend using this shortcut frequently as you build your presentation to make sure you don’t lose any of your work.
![make do presentation The save shortcut is control plus s in PowerPoint](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-44.jpg)
This is the standard way to save a presentation. However, there may be a situation where you want to save your presentation as a different file type.
To learn how to save your presentation as a PDF, see our guide on converting PowerPoint to a PDF .
How to save your PowerPoint presentation as a template
Once you’ve created a presentation that you like, you may want to turn it into a template. The easiest – but not technically correct – way, is to simply create a copy of your current presentation and then change the content.
But be careful! A PowerPoint template is a special type of document and it has its own parameters and behaviors.
If you’re interested in learning about how to create your own PowerPoint template from scratch, see our guide on how to create a PowerPoint template .
Printing Your PowerPoint Presentation
After finishing your PowerPoint presentation, you may want to print it out on paper. Printing your slides is relatively easy.
![make do presentation The print shortcut is control plus P in PowerPoint](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-46.jpg)
To open the Print dialog box, you can either:
- Hit Ctrl+P on your keyboard
- Or go to the Ribbon and click on File and then Print
![make do presentation In the Print dialog box, make your selections for how you want to print your PowerPoint presentation, then click print](https://nutsandboltsspeedtraining.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/how-to-make-a-powerpoint-presentation-47.jpg)
Inside the Print dialog box, you can choose from the various printing settings:
- Printer: Select a printer to use (or print to PDF or OneNote)
- Slides: Choose which slides you want to print
- Layout: Determine how many slides you want per page (this is where you can print the notes, outline, and handouts)
- Collated or uncollated (learn what collated printing means here )
- Color: Choose to print in color, grayscale or black & white
There are many more options for printing your PowerPoint presentations. Here are links to more in-depth articles:

So that’s how to create a PowerPoint presentation if you are brand new to it. We’ve also included a ton of links to helpful resources to boost your PowerPoint skills further.
When you are creating your presentation, it is critical to first focus on the content (what you are trying to say) before getting lost inserting and playing with elements. The clearer you are on what you want to present, the easier it will be to build it out in PowerPoint.

Boring presentations can damage your brand’s image
Boring presentations can feel like those endless meetings where one person monopolizes the conversation. You know, the ones where you’re zoning out, doodling on the side of your notes, just waiting for it to end so you could move on to something more engaging.
That's the disconnect your audience experiences when faced with a boring presentation.
What’s even worse is that when your presentation is dull, it doesn't just bore your audience—it subtly suggests that you or your brand might be, well, kind of boring too .
The good thing is that with the right tweaks and insights, every presentation holds the potential to be memorable.
In this post, we're diving deep into the heart of what makes a presentation creative. We'll explore the mistakes that lead to forgettable slides and the strategies to elevate your content.
By the end, you’ll have all it takes to transform your presentation from mundane to magnetic and have your audience engage with it from the first click to the last.
Let’s go!
What makes a presentation boring?
A boring presentation is a mix of repetitive designs and long chunks of text without a human touch. When slides come off as too generic or overly complex, or they swing between being too predictable or hard to grasp, they lose their spark.
Add in a lack of visuals, real stories, or interaction, and you've got a recipe for audience disinterest.
To truly engage, a presentation should blend interaction, emotion, and content that is relevant to the audience.
How to make a presentation creative step-by-step
Modern presentations are more than just slides—they're experiences. Gone are the days of static bullet points; today's audience craves engagement, interactivity, and a touch of the unexpected.
Let's explore how to make your presentation more creative step-by-step:
1) Add videos to break up text
Videos can set the tone, explain complex ideas, or simply entertain. By strategically placing them at key moments where you feel energy might dip, you make sure your audience remains engaged, and your message is reinforced.
Whether it's a real-life testimonial, a product demo, or a fun animation, videos can breathe life into abstract concepts, making them tangible and relatable.
And, there’s science behind it too: presentations with a video on the cover slide see 32% more engagement . But the magic of videos doesn't stop at the cover. Presentations sprinkled with videos throughout held people's attention 37% longer and even boosted the click-through rate on calls-to-action by 17%.
2) Create a non-linear flow
Who said presentations have to be a straight line? Let's mix it up! By linking slides, you're handing the remote to your audience. It's like those 'choose your own adventure' books from our childhood.
Group your slides into themes or create chapters and let them pick what they want to see next. It's a fun, interactive way to keep them on their toes and engaged.
3) Use personalization for creating tailored stories
You know those emails that greet you by name and make you feel all special? Imagine bringing that warmth to your presentations using dynamic variables.
By integrating with your CRM, you can fetch specific data about your audience and weave it into your slides. This simple trick can make your audience feel like the content was crafted specifically for them, creating a deeper connection.
If you’re making a presentation to showcase your product, you can even use dynamic variables to create a mock-up with your prospect’s name and logo on it to make your deck stand out.
4) Use narrated design
Scrollytelling is where the magic of scrolling meets the art of storytelling. It's an interactive content experience that weaves text, images, videos, and animations into a captivating narrative.
Instead of static slides, scrollytelling guides readers through a story, allowing them to control the pace. It breaks down complex content into bite-sized chunks, enhancing engagement and retention.
Our founder, Itai Amoza, wanted everyone to enjoy this dynamic content experience. So, he joined forces with visualization expert Prof. Steven Franconeri to weave scrollytelling into Storydoc.
Thanks to their partnership, we have dedicated storytelling slides in Storydoc, like the narrator slide you can see below , designed to make content both clear and captivating for all.
5) Tell stories with videos
Videos have this unique power to turn complex ideas into simple, engaging stories. A video might break down a tricky process into fun, easy-to-follow narrative, or give us a peek into real-life examples or experiences.
It's all about making your content feel alive, relatable, and super easy to understand. Because, let's face it, everyone's a sucker for a good story.
Here's a great example of a storytelling video:
6) Use roadmap and timeline slides
Ever tried reading a long-winded description of a company's journey or a product's development process? Yawn, right?
Now, imagine swapping that snooze-fest with a vibrant roadmap or timeline. Instead of slogging through paragraphs, you get a fun, visual play-by-play.
Picture a colorful line showing a startup's journey from a garage brainstorm to its first big sale.
Or a playful timeline marking the stages of turning a wild idea into a bestselling product. It's like turning a history lesson into a comic strip—way more fun and a whole lot clearer!
You can see what it looks like below:
7) Direct attention using animations
Ever been to a theater where the spotlight focuses on the main act? That's what animations do for your presentation.
Whether it's a cheeky arrow pointing out a fun fact, a grand entrance animation for a new idea, or using grayed-out content to highlight a key point, animations are your stage directors.
They ensure your audience's eyes are exactly where you want them to be, soaking in all the important bits.
Here's a great example:
8) Add interactive calculators
Who said numbers have to be boring? With interactive calculators, you're turning math into a fun game . Let your audience punch in numbers and see real-time results.
Whether they're calculating potential savings, ROI, or just playing around, it's an engaging and creative way to make your points tangible. It's like turning your presentation into a hands-on workshop.
9) Use AI-generated images
Instead of sifting through countless stock photos, thanks to the magic of AI, you can have an image that's tailor-made for your slide in seconds.
Storydoc presentation maker lets you generate any image directly in your deck - just give the AI assistant a short description and you’re good to go.
What's great is that you always get an image that matches your topic to a tee. No more "that'll do" compromises. Plus, think of all the time you save when you don't have to hunt for the right picture or take it yourself.
Here's a short video showing how it works:
10) Pop into the presentation with video bubble narration
Imagine if, during a presentation, a mini version of you could pop up, share a quick tip, or clarify a point. That's video bubble narration in a nutshell.
It's like having a friendly guide accompanying your audience, ensuring they get the most out of your content. It adds a creative personal touch, making your presentation feel like a cozy chat between friends.
11) Use before-and-after to show transformation
There's something magical about witnessing a transformation. Just think about the buzz online when someone shares a 'before and after' of a design revamp, weight loss journey, or how they helped a client grow their business.
With a before-and-after slide , you're giving your audience that 'aha!' moment. Even if you can't see their reactions in real-time, you can bet they're sliding back and forth, captivated by the change.
Whether it's showcasing a product's impact, a website redesign, or a process improvement, it's a visual treat that makes your message more powerful.
Here's an example of a before-and-after slide:
12) Close with a smart CTA
The grand finale of your presentation deserves a touch of flair. Instead of a simple 'Thank you' slide, imagine ending with an interactive live chat prompt or a calendar invite for a follow-up. It's like the encore at the end of a concert, giving your audience a chance to engage further.
These smart CTAs aren't just functional; they're creative extensions of your narrative. By integrating them, you're not just concluding your presentation; you're opening doors to new conversations and possibilities.
Here's a great example of a smart CTA:
3 presentation opening ideas
Kicking off a presentation with a bang can set the tone for everything that follows. Here are 3 captivating ways to grab your audience's attention right from the get-go:
Dive into a story: Begin with a personal anecdote or a relatable tale. It's like inviting your audience around a campfire, setting the stage for a memorable narrative.
Pose a thought-provoking question: Challenge your viewers with a question that gets their gears turning. It's an instant engagement booster, making them active participants.
Share a startling statistic: Drop a number that makes jaws drop. When you hit them with a fact that's hard to ignore, you've got their undivided attention.

Wrapping up a presentation is just as crucial as the opening. It's your final chance to leave a lasting impression. Here are 3 best ways to ensure your audience walks away inspired:
Circle back to the start: Revisit your opening story or statement, bringing your narrative full circle. It's a neat way to tie everything together and reinforce your key message.
End with a Call-to-Action: End with a captivating personal video message or a lively animation. It's a unique way to engage, surprise, and guide your audience on what's next.
Share an inspiring quote: Leave them with words that resonate. A powerful quote can sum up your message and linger in their minds long after.

AI presentation maker
When lack of inspiration or time constraints are something you’re worried about, it’s a good idea to seek help. Slidesgo comes to the rescue with its latest functionality—the AI presentation maker! With a few clicks, you’ll have wonderful slideshows that suit your own needs . And it’s totally free!
![make do presentation make do presentation](https://slidesgo.com/images/landing/slides.png)
Generate presentations in minutes
We humans make the world move, but we need to sleep, rest and so on. What if there were someone available 24/7 for you? It’s time to get out of your comfort zone and ask the AI presentation maker to give you a hand. The possibilities are endless : you choose the topic, the tone and the style, and the AI will do the rest. Now we’re talking!
Customize your AI-generated presentation online
Alright, your robotic pal has generated a presentation for you. But, for the time being, AIs can’t read minds, so it’s likely that you’ll want to modify the slides. Please do! We didn’t forget about those time constraints you’re facing, so thanks to the editing tools provided by one of our sister projects —shoutouts to Wepik — you can make changes on the fly without resorting to other programs or software. Add text, choose your own colors, rearrange elements, it’s up to you! Oh, and since we are a big family, you’ll be able to access many resources from big names, that is, Freepik and Flaticon . That means having a lot of images and icons at your disposal!
![make do presentation make do presentation](https://slidesgo.com/images/landing/ai-generator2.png)
How does it work?
Think of your topic.
First things first, you’ll be talking about something in particular, right? A business meeting, a new medical breakthrough, the weather, your favorite songs, a basketball game, a pink elephant you saw last Sunday—you name it. Just type it out and let the AI know what the topic is.
Choose your preferred style and tone
They say that variety is the spice of life. That’s why we let you choose between different design styles, including doodle, simple, abstract, geometric, and elegant . What about the tone? Several of them: fun, creative, casual, professional, and formal. Each one will give you something unique, so which way of impressing your audience will it be this time? Mix and match!
Make any desired changes
You’ve got freshly generated slides. Oh, you wish they were in a different color? That text box would look better if it were placed on the right side? Run the online editor and use the tools to have the slides exactly your way.
Download the final result for free
Yes, just as envisioned those slides deserve to be on your storage device at once! You can export the presentation in .pdf format and download it for free . Can’t wait to show it to your best friend because you think they will love it? Generate a shareable link!
What is an AI-generated presentation?
It’s exactly “what it says on the cover”. AIs, or artificial intelligences, are in constant evolution, and they are now able to generate presentations in a short time, based on inputs from the user. This technology allows you to get a satisfactory presentation much faster by doing a big chunk of the work.
Can I customize the presentation generated by the AI?
Of course! That’s the point! Slidesgo is all for customization since day one, so you’ll be able to make any changes to presentations generated by the AI. We humans are irreplaceable, after all! Thanks to the online editor, you can do whatever modifications you may need, without having to install any software. Colors, text, images, icons, placement, the final decision concerning all of the elements is up to you.
Can I add my own images?
Absolutely. That’s a basic function, and we made sure to have it available. Would it make sense to have a portfolio template generated by an AI without a single picture of your own work? In any case, we also offer the possibility of asking the AI to generate images for you via prompts. Additionally, you can also check out the integrated gallery of images from Freepik and use them. If making an impression is your goal, you’ll have an easy time!
Is this new functionality free? As in “free of charge”? Do you mean it?
Yes, it is, and we mean it. We even asked our buddies at Wepik, who are the ones hosting this AI presentation maker, and they told us “yup, it’s on the house”.
Are there more presentation designs available?
From time to time, we’ll be adding more designs. The cool thing is that you’ll have at your disposal a lot of content from Freepik and Flaticon when using the AI presentation maker. Oh, and just as a reminder, if you feel like you want to do things yourself and don’t want to rely on an AI, you’re on Slidesgo, the leading website when it comes to presentation templates. We have thousands of them, and counting!.
How can I download my presentation?
The easiest way is to click on “Download” to get your presentation in .pdf format. But there are other options! You can click on “Present” to enter the presenter view and start presenting right away! There’s also the “Share” option, which gives you a shareable link. This way, any friend, relative, colleague—anyone, really—will be able to access your presentation in a moment.
Discover more content
This is just the beginning! Slidesgo has thousands of customizable templates for Google Slides and PowerPoint. Our designers have created them with much care and love, and the variety of topics, themes and styles is, how to put it, immense! We also have a blog, in which we post articles for those who want to find inspiration or need to learn a bit more about Google Slides or PowerPoint. Do you have kids? Hello. One question: What verbs can I use with "presentation"? "Make" and "give" are ok, but is it possible to say "do a presentation"? Would it sound too strange?
Hi Deliver is used a lot. Provide Perform (if you're pretty enthusiastic about your subject) Make wouldn't be used. Give however is used a lot. Do would be used - but only informally. Cheers Neal Mc
"Prepare and give a presentation" is all I hear.
In all the reference material that I'm using it seems that "make" is the most usual verb for "presentation". Is this maybe the American usage?
![make do presentation panjandrum](https://cdnawsf.wordreference.net/data/avatars/m/17/17010.jpg?1432136797)
What kind of presentation are you talking about? If this is the presentation of a gift to someone in a formal context then I would expect make . If this is a powerpoint presentation of information to an audience, I would expect give .

I would say either give a presentation or do a presentation although the latter is more informal. I've got to do a presentation. Using 'give' is better english but the use of 'do' is fine.

Make a presenation or give a presentation. Both are correct but I'm just wondering which one you say. I say to give a presentation
envie de voyager
I agree with you that give sounds better, but I would not correct someone who said make . To me, make a presentation sounds like what you would do to prepare the presentation. Then you would give the presentation .
By "give a presentation" I assume you mean give an expose (possibly using Powerpoint or something similar). If you were presenting somebody with a gold watch upon his retirement, you would say "make a presentation".

To be honest I'm a bit confused, I thought we could say "to make a presentation" when we talk about Powerpoint presentations and that kind of things. Look here: How to make presentations , it comes from a British university and the title on the tab says "how to make presentations"...and they're not talking about gifts. Any thoughts?

...And the first sentence of the article reads: As part of an extended interview/selection centre you may be asked to give a short presentation . Both are possible; give is better for all the reasons stated above.
- Nov 6, 2017
My understanding is that "make a presentation" refers to "creating" a presentation (although we wouldn´t use the word "create") and that "give a presentation" refers to the actual talking.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”
- Guy Kawasaki
![make do presentation make do presentation](https://hbr.org/resources/images/article_assets/2024/04/04.11.24_Presentation_1963893627.jpg)
Remember: Less is more.
A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.
- Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
- Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
- Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
- Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.
As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

How can you make a good presentation even more effective?
This page draws on published advice from expert presenters around the world, which will help to take your presentations from merely ‘good’ to ‘great’.
By bringing together advice from a wide range of people, the aim is to cover a whole range of areas.
Whether you are an experienced presenter, or just starting out, there should be ideas here to help you to improve.
1. Show your Passion and Connect with your Audience
It’s hard to be relaxed and be yourself when you’re nervous.
But time and again, the great presenters say that the most important thing is to connect with your audience, and the best way to do that is to let your passion for the subject shine through.
Be honest with the audience about what is important to you and why it matters.
Be enthusiastic and honest, and the audience will respond.
2. Focus on your Audience’s Needs
Your presentation needs to be built around what your audience is going to get out of the presentation.
As you prepare the presentation, you always need to bear in mind what the audience needs and wants to know, not what you can tell them.
While you’re giving the presentation, you also need to remain focused on your audience’s response, and react to that.
You need to make it easy for your audience to understand and respond.
3. Keep it Simple: Concentrate on your Core Message
When planning your presentation, you should always keep in mind the question:
What is the key message (or three key points) for my audience to take away?
You should be able to communicate that key message very briefly.
Some experts recommend a 30-second ‘elevator summary’, others that you can write it on the back of a business card, or say it in no more than 15 words.
Whichever rule you choose, the important thing is to keep your core message focused and brief.
And if what you are planning to say doesn’t contribute to that core message, don’t say it.
4. Smile and Make Eye Contact with your Audience
This sounds very easy, but a surprisingly large number of presenters fail to do it.
If you smile and make eye contact, you are building rapport , which helps the audience to connect with you and your subject. It also helps you to feel less nervous, because you are talking to individuals, not to a great mass of unknown people.
To help you with this, make sure that you don’t turn down all the lights so that only the slide screen is visible. Your audience needs to see you as well as your slides.
5. Start Strongly
The beginning of your presentation is crucial. You need to grab your audience’s attention and hold it.
They will give you a few minutes’ grace in which to entertain them, before they start to switch off if you’re dull. So don’t waste that on explaining who you are. Start by entertaining them.
Try a story (see tip 7 below), or an attention-grabbing (but useful) image on a slide.
6. Remember the 10-20-30 Rule for Slideshows
This is a tip from Guy Kawasaki of Apple. He suggests that slideshows should:
- Contain no more than 10 slides;
- Last no more than 20 minutes; and
- Use a font size of no less than 30 point.
This last is particularly important as it stops you trying to put too much information on any one slide. This whole approach avoids the dreaded ‘Death by PowerPoint’.
As a general rule, slides should be the sideshow to you, the presenter. A good set of slides should be no use without the presenter, and they should definitely contain less, rather than more, information, expressed simply.
If you need to provide more information, create a bespoke handout and give it out after your presentation.
7. Tell Stories
Human beings are programmed to respond to stories.
Stories help us to pay attention, and also to remember things. If you can use stories in your presentation, your audience is more likely to engage and to remember your points afterwards. It is a good idea to start with a story, but there is a wider point too: you need your presentation to act like a story.
Think about what story you are trying to tell your audience, and create your presentation to tell it.
Finding The Story Behind Your Presentation
To effectively tell a story, focus on using at least one of the two most basic storytelling mechanics in your presentation:
Focusing On Characters – People have stories; things, data, and objects do not. So ask yourself “who” is directly involved in your topic that you can use as the focal point of your story.
For example, instead of talking about cars (your company’s products), you could focus on specific characters like:
- The drivers the car is intended for – people looking for speed and adventure
- The engineers who went out of their way to design the most cost-effective car imaginable
A Changing Dynamic – A story needs something to change along the way. So ask yourself “What is not as it should be?” and answer with what you are going to do about it (or what you did about it).
For example…
- Did hazardous road conditions inspire you to build a rugged, all-terrain jeep that any family could afford?
- Did a complicated and confusing food labelling system lead you to establish a colour-coded nutritional index so that anybody could easily understand it?
To see 15 more actionable storytelling tips, see Nuts & Bolts Speed Training’s post on Storytelling Tips .
8. Use your Voice Effectively
The spoken word is actually a pretty inefficient means of communication, because it uses only one of your audience’s five senses. That’s why presenters tend to use visual aids, too. But you can help to make the spoken word better by using your voice effectively.
Varying the speed at which you talk, and emphasising changes in pitch and tone all help to make your voice more interesting and hold your audience’s attention.
For more about this, see our page on Effective Speaking .
9. Use your Body Too
It has been estimated that more than three quarters of communication is non-verbal.
That means that as well as your tone of voice, your body language is crucial to getting your message across. Make sure that you are giving the right messages: body language to avoid includes crossed arms, hands held behind your back or in your pockets, and pacing the stage.
Make your gestures open and confident, and move naturally around the stage, and among the audience too, if possible.
10. Relax, Breathe and Enjoy
If you find presenting difficult, it can be hard to be calm and relaxed about doing it.
One option is to start by concentrating on your breathing. Slow it down, and make sure that you’re breathing fully. Make sure that you continue to pause for breath occasionally during your presentation too.
For more ideas, see our page on Coping with Presentation Nerves .
If you can bring yourself to relax, you will almost certainly present better. If you can actually start to enjoy yourself, your audience will respond to that, and engage better. Your presentations will improve exponentially, and so will your confidence. It’s well worth a try.

In Red-Hot Real Estate Markets, Why Do Certain Homes Just Not Sell?
Manchester, NH , currently holds the title of hottest market in the country , where homes typically sell after just 14 days on the market.
So when a listing in this desirable city sits for 144 days, there has to be something wrong with it, right?
That’s the question we asked upon spotting a three-bedroom, one-bath, 1,400-square-foot house on Central Street listed nearly five months ago for $370,000. That’s far below Manchester’s median listing price of $425,000.
So why has this house sat for so long?
![make do presentation](https://na.rdcpix.com/894769d01748b963191751d265818879w-c3481930728rd-w832_q80.jpg)
(Realtor.com)
According to listing agent Zyel Silva , with Chinatti Realty, there is nothing wrong with this house. Rather, the property has simply had a “ton of bad luck.”
After it was first listed in January for $340,000, the home sat for just 11 days before going under contract for over the asking price. The closing was set for Easter weekend.
“Unfortunately, our buyer passed away,” says Silva. “It was super unfortunate, but, of course, we had to go back onto the market.”
This time, the home sat for only four days before a second buyer made an offer that was even higher than the first buyer’s.
“All was going well,” says Silva. They were a mere 48 hours away from closing. Then the buyer had to back out after learning they’d been a victim of financial fraud.
After this second deal fell through, Silva listed the home yet again. Encouraged by the previous offers over the list price, Silva bumped up the price to $370,000.
But this time, the house sat—and, as the days on the market lengthened into the triple digits, Silva theorizes that people must mistakenly believe something is seriously wrong with the property. (He concedes the higher price might have slowed things down, too.)
In June, however, the house attracted a third buyer and is currently under contract . Provided this sale makes it across the finish line, it suggests that stale listings like this one aren’t necessarily a bad deal for homebuyers. On the contrary, with other buyers wary, it could be an opportunity to snap up a house in a hot market for a good price.
“When a house has been on the market for quite some time, the seller is typically more apt to take an offer that is a little below market rate,” Silva says.
Why listings that linger should not be overlooked
“Buyers should not necessarily be turned off by a home that has spent a long time on the market,” says Realtor.com data analyst Hannah Jones . “It’s worth discussing with the seller’s agent.”
And she echoes Silva: In certain circumstances, these homes can be deals hiding in plain sight.
“The seller may be flexible on price or terms if they are eager to sell, so a long time on the market could play to the buyer’s benefit,” Jones points out.
The most common reasons for a stagnating listing are the condition of the house or the price—or both.
“A home may take longer than expected to sell for a variety of reasons, but most boil down to price versus desirability,” Jones says. “A well-priced, move-in ready home is likely to sell quickly, while a home that needs work may sit longer.”
Liens on a property where money is owed and must be paid off at closing can also deter prospective homebuyers.
In Brooklyn, for instance, a single-family home in a desirable neighborhood lingered on and off the market for eight years and went through several real estate agents before landing a buyer.

(Shanell Reyes)
Co-agent Shanell Reyes , of Bizzarro Real Estate Agency, revealed to Realtor.com that the main snag was the home’s basement renovations, which were done without the proper permits, resulting in building violations totaling over $100,000.
The violations meant that no bank would touch the house. The seller was unable to fix the violations because of the high cost. Finally, a determined buyer came along who managed to find a bank that would finance the deal. It closed for $1.1 million, down from the original $2 million price in 2016.
“This house really sold for below its true value,” says Reyes.
Records show the three-bedroom home with a coveted two-car garage and outdoor space sold for 20% less than comparable properties.
How poor presentation can make a house sit on the market
Cara Ameer , a real estate agent licensed in both Florida and California, once struggled to sell a 5,000-square-foot house in a prestigious gated community in Ponte Vedra Beach. Despite its views overlooking the golf course’s signature hole, it spent six years on the market—three of those with Ameer.
While there was nothing inherently wrong with the house, it had an outdated formal layout with a dining and living room, a grand bridal staircase, and a step-down living room with a bar area.
“Everyone who saw it wanted to do so much to it,” she says. “They then became overwhelmed and concerned about the cost.”
Eventually, a buyer came along keen to do a gut renovation, and the seller came down on the price.
Even if a home’s structural condition is fine, outdated design, poor staging, and subpar photos can also keep certain homes from grabbing the eyeballs they deserve.
Case in point? While homes in Miami Beach typically sell in 68 days, Eloy Carmenate and Mick Duchon of The Corcoran Group recount the story of their two-bedroom, two-bath condo that sat for three years. A renter had her office set up in the dining room with clutter strewed about.
Once the renter moved out and the seller was able to stage the unit, it sold quickly.
Why homebuyers shouldn’t overlook stale listings
Cedric Stewart , a real estate agent at Entourage RD of Keller Williams in Washington, DC, even advises buyers to go straight to the lingering listings if they’re looking for a deal.
“Buyers should target homes that have been listed for sale a while, especially in a hot market,” he says. “Those provide the best opportunity for a good old-fashioned sale where both parties can negotiate what they need, instead of another bidding war where you just offer as much as your bank account can stand.”
Another benefit to stale listings is that buyers won’t feel pressured to rush to the closing table as quickly as possible, as they might be tempted to do in a hot market.
“Stale listings allow buyers to perform all the inspections they should be doing on any home they buy, ” Stewart says. “And unlike multiple-offer situations, with a stale listing, the seller might pay you to buy the house in the form of closing help.”
All that said, Jones stresses that buyers should always kick the tires on a house to make sure it’s not a lemon with serious problems.
“A buyer should be sure to do their due diligence and be sure a given home is the right choice for them,” Jones says, “no matter how long it has been on the market.”

Share slides in Microsoft Teams meetings with PowerPoint Live
PowerPoint Live in Teams gives both the presenter and audience an inclusive and engaging experience, combining the best parts of presenting in PowerPoint with the connection and collaboration of a Microsoft Teams meeting.

When you’re the presenter, you have a unique view that lets you control your presentation while staying engaged with your audience, seeing people’s video, raised hands, reactions, and chat as needed.
And if you’re an audience member, you can interact with the presentation and personalize your viewing experience with captions, high contrast slides, and slides translated into your native language.
Here’s how it works:

If you're in PowerPoint for the web, select Present > Present in Teams .
Your slides will appear in the Teams meeting, with your Notes next to them.
Navigate through the slides

Use the navigation arrows to go forward and backward.
Use the thumbnail strip to jump ahead or backwards.
Select Go to slide to see a grid view of all slides in the presentation. Select one to jump to it.
Stay connected to the audience
One of the benefits of using PowerPoint Live to present instead of sharing your screen is that you have quick access to all your meeting tools you need to engage with the audience and to read the room in one view. This is especially true if you’re presenting from a single screen.
Turn Chat on or off to view what your audience is saying.
See audience reactions and raised hands in real-time.
Change the Layout of your presentation and choose how your live camera feed appears in your presentation, like Standout or Cameo . It helps the audience read your non-verbal cues and keeps them engaged.
Use the Laser pointer , Pen , Highlighter , or Eraser to clearly reference items on your slides.
Audience view
As an audience member, you’re able to personalize your experience without affecting anyone else. Try these options to find what works best for you:
![make do presentation Select Sync to Presenter, next to the navigation arrows](https://support.content.office.net/en-us/media/aa94bac0-2bcd-4b6a-9416-71b322d13de4.png)
Note: If presenters don't want people to be able to independently navigate through a PowerPoint file they are sharing, use the Private view toggle to turn it off.
Click any hyperlink on slides to get more context right away.
Interact with videos on slides to adjust the volume or jump to a timestamp and consume it at your own pace.
Use a screen reader to get full access to the slide content.
![make do presentation Select Translate slides](https://support.content.office.net/en-us/media/3e382409-3f68-4da6-83cd-cfae86fdebbc.png)
Switch to a high contrast view to make the slides easier to view if you have low vision. Select More options > View slides in high contrast .
Your viewing experience will be at a higher fidelity, letting you see crisp text and smooth animations. PowerPoint Live also requires significantly less network bandwidth than typical sharing, making it the best option when network connectivity is a problem.
Independent magnifying and panning
You can zoom in and pan on a presentation slide without affecting what others see. Use your mouse, trackpad, keyboard, touch, or the Magnify Slide option as applicable.
To zoom in or out on a slide, do any one of the following:
Hover over the slideshow and pinch or stretch on trackpad.
Pinch or use the stretch touch gesture (on a touch-enabled device).
Press the + or – keys.
Hover over slide, hold down Ctrl key and scroll with mouse wheel.
In the More Actions menu, click the + or – buttons.
To pan around your slide, do any one of the following:
Press the arrow keys.
Click and drag using a mouse.
Click and drag on a trackpad.
Use one finger to touch and drag (on touch-enabled device).
When done zooming and panning, press Esc to reset your screen.
Important:
PowerPoint Live is not supported in Teams live events, CVI devices, and VTC devices.
If you're using Teams on the web, you’ll need Microsoft Edge 18 or later, or Google Chrome 65 or later, to see the presenter view.
Presenter view is hidden by default for small screen devices but can be turned on by selecting More options below the current slide and then Show presenter view (or by selecting the sharing window and then pressing Ctrl+Shift+x).
Meetings recordings won’t capture any videos, animations, or annotation marks in the PowerPoint Live session.
When you share from Teams, the PowerPoint Live section lists the most recent files you've opened or edited in your team SharePoint site or your OneDrive. If you select one of these files to present, all meeting participants will be able to view the slides during the meeting. Their access permissions to the file outside of the meeting won't change.
If you select Browse and choose to present a PowerPoint file that hasn't been uploaded to Teams before, it will get uploaded as part of the meeting. If you're presenting in a channel meeting, the file is uploaded to the Files tab in the channel, where all team members will have access to it. If you're presenting in a private meeting, the file is uploaded to your OneDrive, where only the meeting participants will be able to access it.
