Long and Short Essays on Unity for Students and Kids in English

Given below is one long Essay on unity composed of about 500 words and one brief Short Essay comprising 100-150 words.

Long Essay on Unity 500 Words in English

Unity essay is usually given to classes 7, 8, 9, and 10.

From our very childhood, we are taught that unity makes us stronger and better persons. “United we stand, divided we fall” has been our motto, and we have always tried to follow it. Unity characterizes almost every aspect of teamwork. Starting from the grass root levels, unity is essential for every bit of community service we do. In a school, teachers often divide children into different groups and assign them some work to do. The very purpose of this is to teach children how to perform in a united and organized fashion.

Unity not only makes us more reliable but also increases our resistance by a great deal. In India, we have always tried to achieve economic, political, social, religious, racial, linguistic, and cultural unity. This is because of India’s massive territorial area and diverse nature. Integration in diversity that makes our country unique and different from the others.

To start with, unity does not mean every culture or religion has to be similar. It means, despite the existing differences, everyone will feel that they belong together. Integration is the most significant binding factor of a nation. At this point, we must understand that not every territorial, demarcated area is a Nation. Unity and integrity are the two factors that build a nation.

A nation is characterized by unity and solidarity. Thus, unity can make and break a country. The most courageous display of unity was seen in the struggle for independence of the Indians from the British. Every Indian, be it Hindu, Muslim, Jain, and everyone else, fought to rid India of the hated foreigners.

We have been trying to achieve the same unity and fervor post-independence. However, religious anarchy has become a significant obstruction to unity in India. Hindu and Muslim unity was a signature characteristic of India that began to fade after Partition. Several unforeseen and unfortunate incidents have further separated these two religions. In India, no extra favor is extended to any particular religion, according to the constitution. But, political leaders have always used religious propaganda to feed their interests.

In India, present-day unity is threatened by vote bank politics, which is wholly based on the policy of divide and rule. They provoke one religion against another and cause a breach of peace and unity. But, India has always faced the challenges of unity and has emerged victorious. Unity cannot be enforced on anyone. It is a feeling that comes from the depths of truth-unity fuels solidarity and oneness among individuals. Unity and integrity form the two fundamental pillars of a country and is essential for smooth functioning and administration.

Unity helps us to be more resistant to unknown factors and harmful situations. India, as a whole, is a united nation that can resist foreign attacks and other threats. Unity was the main factor that helped India to gain her independence. Unity is indispensable in every situation, among every person, if they want to achieve success in their lives.

Short Essay on Unity 150 Words in English

Unity essay is usually given to classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Unity is essential to sustain a nation. A nation is built on the four main pillars of unity, equality, justice, and integrity. Unity is considerably related to balance. If we are not united with each other, we can never believe in the concept of equality.

Unity bases itself on the simple concept that we must respect and treat everyone equally irrespective of our differences. Social integration is crucial to maintain the identity of a society. We must understand how everyone contributes in some way or the other and respects that. Political discourse and selfish motives have always been a threat to our unity. But, we must remember our historical background and preserve the agreement which is so inherent in us and India.

10 Lines on Unity Essay in English

  • Not only is unity essential in the social spectrum but also every range in our lives.
  • Unity is fundamental to sustain a country as it teaches us to work together.
  • From our very childhood, we are taught to respect each other and work in a united fashion.
  • Unity teaches us to respect each other’s choices, discretions, and sentiments and still be together.
  • Unity is essential as it forms the central pillar of our country.
  • India is a vast country with varied cultural, religious, and linguistic divisions. Yet, we aspire to have unity in diversity because we are one nation.
  • Unity can only be achieved when we understand that our differences hold us together, and we all belong to the same nation.
  • Solidarity and unity go hand in hand, and we must understand that we will fall to pieces without agreement.
  • United, we are more durable and more immune to foreign attacks. The united front makes resistance worthier.
  • Unity is essential in every aspect of life, and we must do our best to preserve it.

Unity Is Strength – 10 Lines, Short & Long Essay For Kids

Priyadarshika

Key Points To Remember: Essay On Unity Is Strength For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on ‘unity is strength’ for kids, a paragraph on ‘unity is strength’ for children, short essay on ‘unity is strength’ for kids, long essay on importance of unity is strength for kids, what will your child learn from this essay.

As an old proverb, ‘Unity is Strength’ is often a highly underappreciated line. As social animals, humans evolved to stay united as a unit and survive challenges nature had to throw at us. In the modern world, the need for unity is more important than ever as the diversity among the population centers is increasing with different groups of people having conflicting interests. In this ‘unity is strength’ essay for class 1, 2 and 3 kids, we will discuss why unity is necessary for the world and how to stay united as human beings.

‘Unity is Strength’ is a crucial concept for kids to learn. Here are some essential tips for writing an essay on this topic:

  • Keep the tone of the essay inspirational. The topic is meant to motivate the readers.
  • Use examples and anecdotes about unity wherever possible.
  • Add introductory lines/paragraphs to long-form essays.
  • Include real-life stories, if possible, about the benefits of unity.

Essays in points format will help children formulate and express ideas without difficulty. Here are 10 lines for kids to write an essay for class 1 and 2 on unity:

  • Unity means to stay as one regardless of the differences and the circumstance.
  • Being united as people gives us strength.
  • Individually, people can be weak and prone to failure, but togetherness brings power.
  • Unity in people is similar to a bundle of sticks’ strength over an individual stick.
  • Unity should begin at the level of the family.
  • United families should stand together in unity with their neighbours to build a strong community.
  • Strong and united communities are the foundational pillar of a fair democracy.
  • A nation with millions of united people can work for the betterment of everyone.
  • A united nation is successful across all fronts.
  • Unity as a goal should be cultivated from childhood.

Here is an example of a simple paragraph on unity. It can be used as a building block for short essays as well:

Unity is strength is an idea popular across moral stories, movies, music, various teachings and other areas where people need to work toward a common goal. You have probably seen the idea in action when people come together to pool their strength to lift a heavy object. Communities also stand united for a common cause and accomplish goals. By staying united, it becomes easier to divide any lofty goal into chunks that are manageable by individuals. Although, at this point, it has almost become a cliché, we can see the wonders unity brings about every day around us.

Short essays lay down the foundation for long essay writing skills. Here’s an example for a short essay for class 1, 2 and 3 on unity:

When the going gets tough, it’s easy to divide among ourselves and say it’s every man for himself. History has shown that such an attitude leads to more disasters than successful outcomes. History also has numerous examples of people standing together to overcome adversities and enemies, and this is because in unity lies the real strength of any group of people. The concept has been drummed into people to the extent that its meaning has lost impact. Team sports and activities are simple activities that remind us of the power of unity. A more robust example would be war and combat, where people must fight together to be victorious. In the modern world, unity is not just an idea but a necessity to face the many challenges that will come our way. We must stand united to stop the threat of manmade disasters and combat world problems like global warming, pollution, etc.

Long essays can be tricky for children. However, writing on any topic with practice and understanding the correct structure is possible. Here’s an essay for class 3 on unity:

“Unity is strength” is an old saying that is drummed into the culture until the point that it has become a cliché. The theme of unity is repeated in movies, plays and literature for a good reason- unity is essential for human survival. Through unity, any challenge can be faced and any adversity overcome. As social animals, human beings evolved to stay in groups for safety and strength in numbers. Our ancestors survived in tight-knit groups and hunted together. As civilisation grew, they formed bigger groups with more unity.

Unity is not only a societal phenomenon. Children learn the concept by observing families and elders. Family unity is a must to raise healthy children who can grow up to become productive members of society. Children also apply the same concept in their schools and colleges when they play games on behalf of their teams. They learn the importance of unity in pooling their efforts for a common goal.

Unity is strength is often demonstrated in moral stories using a bundle of sticks. A single stick usually breaks with a small force, while a group of them tied together is harder or almost impossible to break. The simple example applies as well to human relationships, bonds and efforts. When people and communities come together, they can accomplish wonders they otherwise cannot do alone.

History has ample examples of people standing together in the face of natural disasters and war and prevailing because of their unity. Nations that invaders and colonisers enslaved were often divided into different lines. A divided population is easier to conquer and enslave as they fight among themselves leading to weakness. Similarly, the people of the same countries stood united to fight their colonisers and gain freedom.

To sum it all up, unity is a necessary virtue we need to have at the level of family, community and country. Without unity, progress becomes slow, fighting within increases and living together becomes difficult.

What Does ‘Unity Is Strength’ Mean?

Unity is strength is an old quote about people being strong together as a team or a group. A united group is highly motivated to support each other and take on any challenge that comes in their way. When people put together their hands in support, their strength multiplies.

Advantages Of Unity Is Strength

Some of the benefits of unity is strength includes:

1. Unity is essential for growth –  All human accomplishments have been possible because people came together with a common goal. Then they worked together, doing their part to accomplish the goal. Every lofty human endeavour has been possible because of unity and teamwork.

2. Unity is the base of courage –  When our families and friends stand with us, it gives us the courage to face difficulties and injustices. Being alone makes it scary to take difficult decisions; however, when we have the support of people close to us, we can stand brave.

3. Unity is the source of motivation –  When we find ourselves fighting an uphill battle all alone, we lose morale quickly. When others unite with us supportively, we see the motivation to take on any challenge.

4. Unity makes anything possible –  Through unity, humans can accomplish wonders. No project is big enough, and no challenge is impossible when we work together united. Man has built some of the grandest things on earth using the power of unity.

The examples in this essay are meant to act as a guide for your children. Unity is a concept often asked as essay topics for assignments and tests. Here, they will find plenty of material on the subject that they can use to write their own paragraphs.

As we have seen from the examples above, unity is an exceptional quality that strengthens everyone. As the other quote goes: “united we stand, divided we fall” unity is a virtue with many benefits.

India is a country with diverse cultures and traditions. People belonging to various religions, castes and creeds live in our country. The beauty of our country is that there is unity in diversity. People of different origins live in peace and harmony in our country.

Staying United: A Part of Indian Culture

Ours is a country with rich tradition and culture. Staying together and helping each other is a part of our culture. Our joint family system is one of the biggest examples of the importance we give to staying united. The joint family system had prevailed in our country for centuries. Unlike the modern times, in the past the families did not only live together but also bonded well. People sat together, chit chatted and had their meals in each other’s company. Staying united helped them in many ways.

One of these was managing the finances. The male members of the family went out to work and managed the finances of the family. The entire load of bearing all the expenses did not come on one person alone. This way the elderly people did not feel left out or lonely as is the case today. The kids also got good company which helped in their growth and development. Children got good values from their grandparents as they lived with them the entire day.

People in our country did not only live united with their immediate family members but also bonded well with their neighbours and extended family. People stood by each other and acted as a great support system for one another.

Young Indians’ Idea of Unity

While the elder people still promote the idea of staying united, the young generation is slowly drifting apart. Owing to the growing use of technology, they are all engrossed in their own world. However, even though they may not be aware as to who their neighbours are or may not visit their relatives often this does not mean they do not understand the importance of unity. They come together whenever there is need. The youth of our country stands united to raise voice against the social evils as they know the strength of unity. There have been many instances where in people have come out in large numbers to protest against different crimes.

India has set an example about the advantages of staying united in the past. The newer generation also believes in the power of unity although their ways of expression may be different. For how else can people of varied cultures and castes live together in harmony?

Essay on Advantages of Unity – Essay 4 (500 words)

Unity is of utmost importance. Many stories as well as real life incidences have proved how staying united can render strength to people and help them lead a harmonious and fulfilling life. However, many people still do not understand the importance of staying united. They keep fighting over insignificant things and ultimately end up lonely.

Advantages of Unity

Here are some of the advantages of unity:

  • Help and Support

People who stay united together are never left alone in adversity. They help each other and provide moral as well as financial support when in need. On the other hand living in isolation and oblivious to the people around you, might make you feel insecure and an introvert.

  • Good Guidance

When we stay united as a part of the society and are in good terms with everyone around, we can seek guidance from them for both personal and professional matters. Elderly people or those who are more learned and experienced provide good guidance on various matters and we can handle them well.

  • Proper Growth

Staying united is good for our growth and development. Staying together in unity with each other helps in sharing of ideas and opinions which is quite essential for our minds to develop well. In families and societies where people stay united and help each other, children get a healthy environment to grow. This is good for the all round development of children.

  • Source of Motivation

When we work together, we are motivated and encouraged to work harder. We push each other to accomplish the goals and this works as a great motivational factor. We also encourage and appreciate one another on every achievement. This again works as a motivational force. This way people are motivated to work even better and achieve greater goals.

A person who works alone has to motivate himself on his own and it becomes harder at times.

  • Greater Accomplishment

When we work together as a team, we are able to accomplish greater goals. We help each other and can overcome various hurdles together. If there is a rift in the team and each individual looks for his individual benefit then it is hard to achieve the common goal. There have been numerous examples wherein people have lost games and projects only because they began fulfilling their own small selfish motives instead of working as a team to achieve the main goal.

  • Fighting a Mission

Fighting a mission becomes much easier when there are greater numbers of people involved. Many social evils and unjust practices have been fought and eradicated in the past only because people came out in large number to fight against the same. A single person can initiate a cause but cannot fight all alone. It is only when he gets good support; there are chances of winning a battle.

Thus, we see there are numerous benefits of staying united. We can accomplish big tasks, rely on the people in times of need and nurture young minds in a better way if we stay united.

Essay on Role of Unity in National Development – Essay 5 (600 words)

As Mattie J.T. Stepanek said, “Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved”. Staying united helps individuals, society as well as the nation as a whole. A nation where people live in unity has better chances of development compared to those where there is hatred and crime all around. Unity plays a major role in the development of a nation.

Work towards Common Goal

When people live in unity with each other they look forward to work towards a common goal rather than satisfying their own selfish motives. They love their nation as well as their fellow citizens. They understand the fact that they would be able to grow and have a better lifestyle only when there is national development. They also understand that national development is possible only when they help each other in achieving their goals rather than dragging each other down. This goes a long way in the development of the nation.

However, unfortunately in India as well as many other countries, people do not realise the power of unity. They only think about themselves and work for their benefit rather than working for the betterment of the nation.

End Hatred among Citizens; Lower Crime Rate

A country in which people live in unity there is peace and harmony all around. They do not fight with each other in the name of religion, caste, culture or any other thing. They respect and value each other and stand by each other in the hour of need.

They understand that their true power lies in staying and working together rather than planning against each other. There is no hatred among citizens of such country and thus the crime rate is low. A country where the crime rate is low would certainly develop at a faster pace.

Government’s Role in Building Unity

Unity can be achieved if each individual is ready to shed his individual interests and work for the betterment of the nation as a whole. While the spirit must be inborn, the government can play its role in building of unity among people. Here are a few ways in which this can be achieved:

  • End Corruption

A country can never prosper if its political system is corrupt. The political leaders must be chosen with utmost caution. They must take it as their responsibility to stay united and work towards the common goal of developing the nation rather than pulling each other down and juggling money for personal benefits.

  • Lower Economic Disparity

There is a lot of economic disparity in our country. The rich people in our country are becoming richer by each passing day and the poor are getting poorer. This creates grudge among the poor sections and they often take to criminal means that hamper national development. The government must bridge this gap and pay fair wages to everyone so that each citizen is motivated to indulge in productive tasks.

  • Educate People

People must be educated about the importance of staying united. This must be made a part of the school curriculum and must also be emphasized by various other means. Only when people understand the importance of staying united they will work towards achieving it.

Thus, we see unity plays a major role in the development of a nation. Children must be taught the importance of staying united from the very beginning. They must be told as to how it can do good for them as well as their country. Government must also do its bit to keep the people united so as to ensure they work jointly for the development of the nation.

Importance of Unity

The importance and benefits of staying united cannot be neglected. There is a proverb ‘unity is strength’, if we understand and implement this proverb in our life then we will do so much better in our lives.

Unfortunately, now a days, there is so much competition in this world that people have forgotten the concept of unity.

They are only after success without caring about their moral values. We need to understand that strength only lies in unity and we stand strong only if we are united.

The moment we are divided, defeat will be our fate. When we are divided, anyone can easily break us and destroy our peace.

It has been seen from the beginning of mankind that when there is no unity among people then destruction has always taken place. Division always spoils relationships. We can never face troubles alone.

Disunity is very dangerous for a country. It consumes it from inside out. This leads to loosening of ties of society which causes disorientation in a society. Superior powers take advantage of this and they plan strategies to take control.

They can accomplish greater goals together which might not be possible to accomplish alone. National unity is very important for the development of a country. It is an important key to build a strong and peaceful society.

We need to understand that it is easier to break a single stick but not a bundle of sticks. So, if we stay united then no one can break us but if we are not united then we can easily be defeated. If we are not united then we cannot face difficulties.

Therefore, even if there are differences among us then we should try to understand the differences and live in peace with each other. The importance of unity is a very important message and parents should pass this message to their children.

We live in a cosmopolitan society where people vary in their opinions, judgments, view points, outlooks, perspectives and beliefs. It is quite often said that no two people can think and act in the same way.

People look at things in a certain way and create opinions of their own, based on their knowledge, circumstances, upbringing, culture, mind sets, etc. Based on these factors and many more, they vary in their perspectives and decision making abilities.

A new hoarding put up across the road side drew different opinions from different people. Some saw it as a sheer waste of space and utility, some smiled at the model displayed in the hoarding, some thought of having a second look at the hoarding, some passed it off as just another thing.

So we can see that basically people have different views over different things and issues. Nobody can think and act similarly and in the same fashion.

Unity within the Family

So in what context does the term ‘unity’ relate to? Let’s explore more. Suppose a five member family is planning a vacation for their holidays. The children prefer going to an amusement park. Their parents like visiting a cool hill station.

The elders of the house consider religious spots as their favorites. So how then the vacation should be planned. If three different batches set out on three different trips, the whole concept of enjoying the vacation is ruined. Enjoyment comes when all three sets of people agree to go to a common place and spend time together.

But disagreements over deciding the place are bound to be there. So, in that case, with mutual understanding within the family, it is possible for the entire family to plan a trip to travel together and have fun in the vacation. The feeling of mutual understanding brings about closeness to the topic of unity.

When there was unity in planning the trip, it was actually worked out and probably executed successfully. If there was no unity in planning for the trip, it would have become a miserable disagreement.

Perspective of Unity

So where does unity lie, within the people, in their jobs or in their minds, let us look into it now. Unity is a feeling that springs out of mutual respect and mutual understanding between a group of people, in order to bring about goodwill and a feeling of mutual agreement with all the parties involved.

Large families existed in olden days, because there was unity among the family members and they had the feeling of preserving the unity for the next generations. In these days, people are hell bent on disagreements; nobody seems to have a mutual consent over matters related to the house.

This leaves a gap in their thinking and leaves no room for co-operation and integration of the full family. Hence, we find many broken families these days. Every person stands in a hurry to bring out and glorify his opinions over others and seems totally impatient to lend an ear to what others also have to say.

There is hardly any room for a unified thinking approach here. Families can sit together, discuss openly and sort out issues before it’s too late. That way, the concept of staying together as a big unit with the feeling of unity in everybody’s hearts and not anywhere else, can be certainly achieved.

Unity in Diversity

In our country, we often hear what has been followed since ages and that is ‘ Unity in diversity ’. How that is achieved in our country lies the big question. Unity in big terms here means co-operation and harmony among all citizens though they preach and practice different religions of their choice.

In a multi –cultural and multi-linguistic society as ours, the amount of differences that can crop up between any two groups of people can never be imagined. In a big country like ours, we find politicians debating every other day about issues that seem smaller to some, major for a few others and critical to the ones affected by them.

Execution of schemes depends on various political parameters and crossing various voices of dissent. If there was a shout of consent in every legitimate scheme brought up by the government, our nation would have become a super power by now.

But differences within various political groups, dissuasion’s within persons belonging to the same political party, using politics for their personal gains and the endless blame-games have thrown apart the concept of unity. Political leaders no longer work with unity to see the country progress and achieve its dream of becoming a super power nation.

When something new is launched, instead of showing unity in executing and achieving its goal, people start protesting against it and draw voices of dissent over them. This leads to the situation breaking down unnecessarily.

With no signs of unity or support anywhere, things get delayed in execution since they have to cross many a hurdles along their path. Hence, the country becomes sluggish in its development and progress naturally takes a back seat.

Japan is a super power nation that was devastated by nuclear bomb blasts, not once but twice over. But the people who suffered and survived the explosions did not sit back watching destiny to show them the path. They started working in unity; they formed groups of their own.

Their only goal was to bring back the prestigious position that the nation once held and they were really very successful in doing so. They rose from the shackles; it was not a one man’s decision, but a collective and united decision that worked in their favor.

They were determined to prove themselves to the world and did not stretch their arms for help. Instead, they started building ideas together and reconstructing their own nation with their own hands.

The results are there for us to see. Not only did the nation emerge as one of the super power countries of the world, but also stood as a great inspiration to many other nations to stand up and show unity to achieve the desired result.

When a dance troupe performs on stage, the success of the dance is directly dependent on every person’s right moves. With one wrong move thrown awkwardly by any dancer, the whole troupe would suffer setbacks. Here comes the show of unity.

When every person performs with perfect synchronization with the rest of the team, the show is bound to be a success. Success here cannot be credited to just one person, but it’s the collective effort of the entire team. The unity and uniformity shown by all the team members certainly puts up a great show.

So why is that we consider unity as such an important factor in our lives though we know each one of us are different in our own ways. When a mother prepares food for the family, she keeps in view the food choices of the entire family.

She makes sure to tend to every person’s taste buds and not disappoint any member of the family, especially children. The reason she does that is to see her family sit together and have lunch happily. There is show of unity, balance and harmony between the family members of the house.

In case, she prepared food that was only liked by her, then probably the rest of the house members would complain about her food choices and may prefer to eat something else. Here, we can find the disintegration of the family.

Values are another important aspect of bringing about unity within family. There should be a desire in people’s minds to lead a harmonious life by co-operating with each other. Sometimes, compromises in life are essential to set the situation right.

It’s perfectly alright to set back for a while and allow others to take the front seat if that is going to bring in a happy cheer on the family members. Unity is not allowing one’s opinions to be subdued or not letting oneself to shut down her voice to falsely push oneself to buy somebody else’s belief.

It’s a kind of feeling that arises out of mutual respect for each other and leads one in the way of happiness and contentment.

Unity in Composition

In composition , unity is the quality of oneness in a paragraph or essay that results when all the words and sentences contribute to a single effect or main idea; also called wholeness .

For the past two centuries, composition handbooks have insisted that unity is an essential characteristic of an effective text . Professor Andy Crockett points out that the " five-paragraph theme and  current-traditional rhetoric 's emphasis on method reflect further the expediency and utility of unity." However, Crockett also notes that "for rhetoricians , the achievement of unity has never been taken for granted" (Encyclopedia of Rhetoric and Composition, 1996.)

Pronunciation

From the Latin, "one."

Observations

  • "Most pieces of effective writing are unified around one main point. That is, all the subpoints and  supporting details are relevant to that point. Generally, after you have read an essay, you can sum up the writer's main point in a sentence, even if the author has not stated it explicitly. We call this summary statement a thesis ." (X. J. Kennedy, Dorothy M. Kennedy, and Marcia F. Muth, The Bedford Guide for College Writers, 8th ed. Bedford/St. Martin's, 2008)
  • Unity and Coherence "A good check on unity is to ask yourself if everything in your paragraph or essay is subordinate to and derived from the controlling idea. Make sure that your controlling idea—the topic sentence or thesis—indicates the subject and the focus on that subject..." (Lee Brandon and Kelly Brandon, Paragraphs and Essays With Integrated Readings, 12th ed. Wadsworth, 2012)

Rules of Thumb for Writing Unified Paragraphs

  • Be sure your paragraphs focus on one idea and state that idea in a topic sentence.
  • Place your topic sentence effectively within your paragraph. Let the purpose of your paragraph and the nature of your evidence guide you.
  • Let your paragraph's evidence —the selected details , the examples — illustrate or clarify the idea expressed in your topic sentence.
  • Make sure you explain the relationship between your evidence and your idea so that it is clear to readers.
  • Think about unity among paragraphs when writing essays. Be sure your paragraphs are related, that they fit together and clarify your essay's idea. (R. DiYanni, Scribner Handbook for Writers. Allyn & Bacon, 2001)

A Note on Topic Sentences

  • "Paragraphs may not have a topic sentence, but they must have unity and purpose . All the ideas in a paragraph should relate to a clear point readers will easily understand." (Mark Connelly, Get Writing: Paragraphs and Essays. Thomson Wadsworth, 2009)

Counterviews on Unity

  • " Unity is the shallowest, the cheapest deception of all composition ... Every piece of writing, it matters not what it is, has unity. Inexpert or bad writing most terribly so. But ability in an essay is a multiplicity, infinite fracture, the intercrossing of opposed forces establishing any number of opposed centres of stillness." (William Carlos Williams, "An Essay on Virginia," 1925)

What is Unity (in Writing)?

Unity refers to

  • the state of being whole or undivided
  • the degree to which the elements of a text work together to deliver a consistent message, theme, idea, narrative, tone, voice, and purpose
  • No likely counterarguments have been overlooked. No unnecessary information or evidence has been provided

Related Concepts: Felt Sense ; Gestalt ; Organization; Thesis .

What’s the difference between unity and coherence ?

Unity refers to a writer’s effort to make sure every bit of discourse — every word , phrase , clause , sentence , and paragraph — directly contributes to the main narrative or thesis . For instance, in a detective story, each clue logically builds toward the final revelation. Thus, unity is closely tied to coherence –the act of organizing information in a logical, rhetorical manner. However, unity goes a step further. While coherence could mean a logically ordered set of ideas or events, unity is achieved when these coherent parts also directly feed into the larger narrative or thesis. For example, a coherent piece might detail a day’s events chronologically, but a unified piece ensures each event also reveals something crucial about the character’s personality. Achieving unity is vital for writers because it enhances clarity and reinforces the impact of their work, improving overall communication

How do teachers, editors, and critics use the concept of unity to critique texts?

Critiquing texts on the basis of unity is a valuable approach as it allows the evaluator to determine if all parts of the text work together to form a cohesive whole. A text that has unity is like a well-oiled machine with all its components working in unison to achieve a single goal.

Here are some ways unity can be used in critique:

  • Theme Consistency: A story should ideally have a unifying theme that resonates through its entirety. If different parts of a text seem to convey conflicting themes, or if a theme is introduced but then discarded, the text may lack unity.
  • Character Development: In fiction, characters should be consistently developed throughout a story. Characters that act against their established traits without proper justification can disrupt the unity of a story.
  • Tone and Style: The tone and style of a text should be consistent throughout, unless there is a deliberate reason for a change. Inconsistencies can disrupt the reader’s experience and sense of unity.
  • Structure and Flow: The sequence of thoughts and events in a text contributes to its unity. A well-structured text leads the reader smoothly from one idea or event to the next.
  • Argument Unity: In persuasive or expository writing, all parts of the argument should support the thesis. Irrelevant or contradictory points can weaken the unity and overall effectiveness of the text.

What is unity at the global level?

Unity at the global level refers to how well a writer maintains a consistent focus on the writer’s purpose, thesis, or research question. Global unity may also refer to a consistent voice, tone, or persona.

What is unity at the local level?

Unity at the local level refers to how well a writer keeps a consistent focus at the paragraph and sentence level.

Unity @ the Paragraph Level

Paragraphs need to stay focused on one topic. A good way to make sure you are staying focused is to have a solid topic sentence—a sentence that explains what the paragraph will discuss—and be sure to add only those details or examples that relate directly to that topic.

In the same paragraph below the topic sentence is “”The film industry releases more sequels than original movies these days.” Notice how this sentence explicitly tells the reader what the paragraph is about. Also notice how the subsequent two sentences expound on that topic sentence. Yet, then notice how the two sentences about Star Wars and science fiction prequels do not fit the main idea of the paragraph. Although they contain interesting information, these sentences disrupt the paragraph’s unity. The writer should move them to another point in a new paragraph (about prequels or maybe science fiction movies, depending on the focus of the paper) or even get rid of them entirely.

“The film industry releases more sequels than original movies these days. From the Marvel comic book adaptations to the seventh installment of the latest horror series, Hollywood seems determined to run a franchise into the ground rather than take a chance on something new. Instead of meeting new characters, moviegoers learned more about Captain America in The Winter Soldier , and they followed the ongoing story of Thor and Loki in Thor: The Dark World . Even the horror industry seems to be losing creativity—apparently the four Paranormal Activity movies need yet another sequel. Remember the hype around the Star Wars prequels a few years ago? Science fiction movies often have prequels that fans love to see. Moviegoers are ready for something new in theaters; hopefully, the producers in Hollywood will realize that the age of the sequel is coming to an end.”

Unity @ the Sentence Level

Readers expect writers to organize sentences in a logical order. There are three major ways to organize sentences: deductive order, inductive order, or coordinate order. Francis Christensen, in Notes Toward a New Rhetoric (NY: Harper & Row, 1967), has suggested that we number sentences according to their level of generality.

According to Christensen, we would assign a 1 to the most general sentence and then a 2 to the second most general sentence, and so on. Christensen considers the following paragraph, which he excerpted from Jacob Bronowski’s The Common Sense of Science , to be an example of a subordinate pattern because the sentences become increasingly more specific as the reader progresses through the paragraph:

  • Perhaps this is what gives them both their air of happiness and freedom in these activities.

Christensen is quick to point out that not all paragraphs have a subordinate structure. The following one, which he took from Bergen Evans’s Comfortable Words, is an example of what Christensen considers a coordinate sequence:

  • He [the native speaker] may, of course, speak a form of English that marks him as coming from a rural or an unread group.
  • But if he doesn’t mind being so marked, there’s no reason why he should change.
  • Samuel Johnson kept a Staffordshire burr in his speech all his life.
  • In Burns’ mouth the despised lowland Scots dialect served just as well as the “correct” English spoken by ten million of his southern contemporaries.
  • Lincoln’s vocabulary and his way of pronouncing certain words were sneered at by many better educated people at the time, but he seemed to be able to use the English language as effectively as his critics.

Essay on Unity

Essay on unity in which we explain the importance of unity for both the individual and society. We also present several short topic models and a paragraph on the importance of unity among the people of the same country.

Essay on unity is important because it deals with basic elements for writing an article or topic on unity, such as the components of unity, how we promote national unity, and what are the benefits of unity for both the individual, the family and society.

National unity is the highest and most important type of unity, because the unity of individuals leads to the strength of societies, and thus the strength of the nation.

  • Essay on Unity

Unity is important for individuals and societies, and that is why we present the essay on unity, in which we show that importance, and how strength is an inevitable result of unity.

In our essay on unity, we will discuss some of the global events that led to the weakness of some countries as a result of civil conflicts.

We will also talk about some strong countries as a result of the interdependence of their citizens and their union in times of crisis.

Unity definition

Unity may be between individuals, or it may be between large groups, such as national unity. It is the rallying of citizens around the goals of their state, not searching for personal gains, and not discriminating between citizens on religious, cultural or social grounds. Everyone works for the common good.

The solidarity and cooperation of citizens is necessary for the progress of the state in all fields, and therefore it is important to solve all internal problems and conflicts, so that the state can devote itself to development and the establishment of huge economic projects.

The importance of national unity

There is no doubt that national unity is the basis on which the state relies on facing all challenges, and there will be no national unity except by fighting corruption, preventing injustice, and establishing justice among citizens.

We can summarize the importance of national unity as follows:

  • National unity gives the state a strength that makes enemies fear it and think a lot before trying to attack it, because men are the protectors of the homeland, and therefore they must be one hand against any enemy that threatens their homeland.
  • Unity reduces the proportion of internal problems, and there is the ability to solve problems easily. This is because unity among the members of society makes them care about valuable goals, such as the economic advancement of the state, protecting the state and showing its strength so that the enemies fear it. These goals make the internal differences not of great importance, and they can be resolved easily.
  • Unity contributes to the advancement of all sectors of the state. There is no doubt that progress in all areas of life requires the efforts and expertise of all individuals, so no segment of society can be dispensed with. Every member of society has an important role in the progress of society.
  • National unity helps spread peace, reject violence and hatred, and eliminate racism. Feelings of love, brotherhood and tolerance prevail among the members of society. Thus, peace spreads among members of society, and crime is reduced.

The importance of unity within the family

Unity among family members is the microcosm of unity among members of society. The family is the one that teaches its children good values and morals. Among these values are unity between family members and cooperation among them. Unity among family members is an important thing as it achieves the following:

  • Unity among family members. The individual feels safe, as his family members will support him in all crises.
  • Unity makes the family strength, and we see this clearly in large families, where it is valued and respected among other families.
  • The interconnected family enjoys good job opportunities, because each of them tries to help the other members of his family by transferring expertise or nominating him to the employers.
  • Unity between family members strengthens their relationships, and provides them with opportunities to work in leadership positions.
  • The mental health of individuals is good when the individual feels valued within his family.

How do we develop unity among the members of society?

There are many factors that any state can follow in order to strengthen unity among the people, and thus ensure economic and political stability, including:

The role of the family in educating its children the importance of unity

The family is the first teacher who implants in the hearts of young people values and principles. One of the most important principles that the family must inculcate in the hearts of its children is the love of the homeland and belonging to it, and work to advance it.

All of this requires unity and cooperation among the members of society, and that general goals should take precedence over personal goals.

When the child grows up on these principles, he will realize that the most precious thing he has is the homeland, and he will work to advance his country with enthusiasm.

The role of the media in promoting unity among citizens

There is no doubt that the media, through its various means, has a great role in guiding citizens, and therefore the media must have a positive role in guiding citizens to unity and cooperation and to reject differences.

This is done through targeted programs that help bring people closer together, and not exploit differences in ideas to sow discord and division among the people’s sects.

The role of the school and the university in promoting unity among students

There is no doubt that educational institutions have a great role in guidance and counseling, and therefore teachers must be a good role model in unity and cooperation, as this behavior will be transmitted to their students easily.

The curricula should also include topics on the importance of unity among the nation’s groups, and non-discrimination between them, regardless of their culture, beliefs or economic conditions.

At the end of the essay on unity, we explained the importance of unity for both the individual and the society. We also clarified the ingredients that help to promote unity among the members of one society, and what are the advantages that accrue to both the individual and the state as a result of unity. We hope that you have benefited from what we have provided.

Speech On Unity for Students and Children

Speech on unity.

Unity is an important element for the society we live in, as we all together form this whole nation. “Strength is always with the Unity” is a well-known phrase and it is totally true. Unity represents togetherness and being there for each other like we all are one. Therefore, in unity, everyone stands together for every big and small problem. There are several stories as well as there are many real-life incidences that are proof that unity always leads a harmonious and satisfying life for everyone. On the other hand, many people still don’t get the benefits and concepts of unity. People fight over insignificant and stupid things and in the end, they end up with loneliness and emptiness. Speech On Unity

Help and Support: People help and support each other. On the other hand, living in separation can make anyone feel insecure and shy and that’s not a good thing to happen to anyone.

Good Guidance: It is a true fact that when we stay in unity then we may get guidance from others, for both personal and professional matters including the solutions also.

Proper Growth: Staying in unity is always good for our growth and as well as for the development of the nation. Moreover, it is also good for the members of the family in particular and all-round development of the kids.

Source of Motivation: When we work or perform any task together, we get motivated and encouraged to work harder with each other. Also, we motivate each other to achieve the goals and this teamwork results in a great motivational factor.

Greater Accomplishment: Whenever we work together as a team, we easily accomplish superior goals which are sometimes not possible alone.

Fighting a Mission: Fighting any mission becomes much easier when we have a number of people involved in the mission. The Indian national movement for freedom is the best example of unity. Many unfair practices have been fought and removed in the past only because of the unity among the people.

Role of Government in the Development of Unity

Unity can only be achieved when an individual is ready to sacrifice his/her individual interests and work for the betterment of the country as a whole with coordination. Undoubtedly the spirit of unity should be inborn. The government can play an essential role in the process of building unity among the public. Few steps by which we can achieve unity are as follows:

End Corruption: A nation can never be wealthy and in a better condition if it’s political system is full of corruption. So, we should choose the political leaders with the utmost care and analysis.

Lower Economic Disparity : There is a lot of economic disparity present in our nation. As we all can see that rich people are becoming richer day by day and the poor people are getting even poorer.

The word unity is a five-letter word but has a huge meaning that we all should know. Unity is the need of the hour. In every country, people need unity to survive. If people will not unite, they will become weak alone and then they will be facing a lot of problems. A group of people is always greater than a single person that is alone, in all means.

We should always help and support other people who need help and we should always stand together in every situation. People help someone only when they get help from that person in their good or bad times. So, we should coordinate with each other and always stay united. Unity is something that makes the weaker one strong.

  • Proving the Thesis

Unity is the idea that all parts of the writing work to achieve the same goal: proving the thesis. Just as the content of a paragraph should focus on a topic sentence, the content of an essay must focus on the thesis.  The introduction paragraph introduces the thesis, the body paragraphs each have a proof point (topic sentence) with content that proves the thesis, and the concluding paragraph sums up the proof and restates the thesis. Extraneous information in any part of the essay that is not related to the thesis is distracting and takes away from the strength of proving the thesis.

An essay must have coherence. The sentences must flow smoothly and logically from one to the next as they support the purpose of each paragraph in proving the thesis.

Just as the last sentence in a paragraph must connect back to the topic sentence of the paragraph, the last paragraph of the essay should connect back to the thesis by reviewing the proof and restating the thesis.

Example of Essay with Problems of Unity and Coherence

Here is an example of a brief essay that includes a paragraph that does not support the thesis “Many people are changing their diets to be healthier.”

People are concerned about pesticides, steroids, and antibiotics in the food they eat.  Many now shop for organic foods since they don’t have the pesticides used in conventionally grown food.  Meat from chicken and cows that are not given steroids or antibiotics are gaining popularity even though they are much more expensive. More and more, people are eliminating pesticides, steroids, and antibiotics from their diets.     Eating healthier also is beneficial to the environment since there are less pesticides poisoning the earth. Pesticides getting into the waterways is creating a problem with drinking water.  Historically, safe drinking water has been a problem. It is believed the Ancient Egyptians drank beer since the water was not safe to drink.  Brewing beer killed the harmful organisms and bacteria in the water from the Nile. There is a growing concern about eating genetically modified foods, and people are opting for non-GMO diets.  Some people say there are more allergic reactions and other health problems resulting from these foods.  Others are concerned because there are no long-term studies that clearly show no adverse health effects such as cancers or other illnesses. Avoiding GMO food is another way people are eating healthier food.

See how just one paragraph can take away from the effectiveness of the essay in showing how people are changing to healthier food since unity and coherence are affected. There is no longer unity among all the paragraphs. The thought pattern is disjointed and the essay loses its coherence.

Transitions and Logical Flow of Ideas

Transitions are words, groups of words, or sentences that connect one sentence to another or one paragraph to another.

They promote a logical flow from one idea to the next and overall unity and coherence.

While transitions are not needed in every sentence or at the end of every paragraph, they are missed when they are omitted since the flow of thoughts becomes disjointed or even confusing.

There are different types of transitions:

  • Time – before, after, during, in the meantime, nowadays
  • Space – over, around, under
  • Examples – for instance, one example is
  • Comparison – on the other hand, the opposing view
  • Consequence – as a result, subsequently

These are just a few examples.  The idea is to paint a clear, logical connection between sentences and between paragraphs.
