Entry-level

To be effective, your delivery driver cover letter needs to set a clear focus. Even more than on your resume (which must outline recent work ), center your cover letter information on whatever most qualifies you for the job opening at hand. In the following sections, we introduce the five main parts of a cover letter and explain how you can properly focus each one.

At the top of the page, include:

  • Your resume contact header, which should give your full name, address , email, phone number, and LinkedIn or other social accounts if applicable
  • The recipient’s name, title, organization, and contact information (when available)

Note: Consider adding a professional title to your contact header, as in the example below. In many cases, you can copy over the title from your resume profile summary . By including a title, you’ll set a clear focus right away and show hiring managers you fall in the category of applicants they’re looking for.

2. Salutation

Address your recipient by name as in the first example below – this is the quickest way to show you’re sending a job-specific letter and not a boilerplate. If you can’t find the person’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager” so your greeting is still tailored somewhat to each job opening.

For traditional job applications, end your salutation line with a colon. But use a comma instead if you know your recipient or the employer has a casual work culture (sometimes revealed by the job posting). In rare cases, you may also trade out the standard “Dear” for a more casual “Greetings,” “Hello,” “Hi,” or even “Good morning.” Use your discretion and take cues from the job posting or company website when possible.

Dear Ms. Taylor:

Dear FedEx Hiring Manager:

3. “Hook” or introduction

Catch the reader’s attention by citing an achievement from your work history or a key credential the employer seeks in applicants. Feel free to adapt a bullet highlight from your resume since a little repetition across documents can make your application more cohesive. But choose carefully. The highlight that opens your letter is often your first impression on employers. Choose one that’s impressive and relevant to the job so hiring managers can quickly envision you adding value to their company.

As an alternative to the work highlight approach, you can set yourself apart by networking. Begin your letter by citing any personal or professional connections you have with the hiring manager. If someone at the organization alerted you to the job, use a line like “I was excited to hear from your colleague [Name] about [Company’s]’s new delivery driver position.” Or, if you’ve already met your recipient, mention that with a line like “It was great speaking with you at the job fair last week.”

In my last formal review, I earned high marks for transporting packages quickly and accurately. I hope to generate similar value as a delivery driver at your organization.

4. Job- or employer-specific paragraph(s)

Here’s where you can bring your cover letter into sharpest focus. Show the hiring manager you’re not just after this type of role but this specific role at this particular organization. Read the job posting again closely, then write two or three sentences in response to it. What details about the delivery driver job or employer caught your attention? Do you identify with the company’s stated mission or values? If so, how? Consider quoting text from the job posting that resonates with you.

Following this explanation, cite a few more of your skills or achievements , possibly as bullet points.

Your job ad caught my attention, particularly the call for a driver who “communicates clearly with team members and customers and offers ideas to constantly hone operations.” Teamwork and process improvement are two key themes of my career to date, which includes the following highlights:

  • Introduced procedures that helped streamline daily timekeeping, cutting related costs by 15%
  • Won a company award in 2023 for outstanding customer service
  • Safely loaded, lowered, and carried large packages weighing up to 70 pounds
  • Maintained and operated delivery vehicles in all weather conditions

5. Conclusion

Finally, request an interview and thank the hiring manager for their consideration. Consider briefly restating your core skills to carry the letter’s focus through the last paragraph. To end your cover letter, use a simple closing like “Sincerely” or “Best regards” and then your name.

The enclosed resume contains a complete overview of my work history.

I’d love to learn more about your team and how I can uphold your service standards. Would it be possible to discuss my skills with you in the near future? Please call or email me to schedule an interview, and I’ll look forward to possibly hearing from you soon. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Delivery Driver Cover Letter Tips

1. show you can get shipments to the right place quickly.

Start your letter with a strong, quantified example of your efficiency in carrying merchandise for employers or customers. Also, consider describing ways you’ve streamlined procedures or combined delivery routes.

Currently, I’m ranked No. 3 on a 12-person team for overall efficiency in delivering floral arrangement orders to customers. I hope to bring that same dedication to your company.

2. Tell why you’re a good fit

Show your interest in the hiring organization by describing your similar work experiences. Based on the job posting, what does the role have in common with your background or goals? For instance, maybe it’s one of the many courier-based driving jobs, an industry you’d like to return to. Or perhaps you’re already familiar with the customer base or delivery region.

What traits are useful to highlight in my delivery driver cover letter -.

Employers like delivery drivers to be observant, patient, adaptable, self-directed, and service-minded. Consider which of these traits best describe you, then give an example or two of how you’ve shown them in a work setting.

How can I make my delivery driver cover letter stand out? -

By brainstorming your thoughts on a separate document or sheet of paper first. When you let yourself think more freely and creatively about the points to include, you’ll find fresher language for them. Brainstorming also helps you avoid the bland, generic phrases that make so many other applicants’ letters ineffective.

What information is required on a delivery driver cover letter? -

Virtually none, aside from your name and contact information. Cover letters are open-ended. You can focus on any career details you like as long as you’re not misleading employers about your experience. Feel free to leave out any information that doesn’t speak to your relevant skills or background as a delivery driver. With this approach, you’ll give hiring managers a clearer sense of why you fit the role.

Kick off your delivery driver cover letter: the salutation or greeting

When writing your delivery driver cover letter, remember that you're not writing for some complex AI or robot, but for actual human beings.

And recruiters, while on the lookout to understand your experience, would enjoy seeing a cover letter that is tailored to the role and addresses them . Personally.

So, if you haven't done so, invest some time in finding out who's the hiring manager for the role you're applying to. A good place to start would be LinkedIn and the corporate website.

Alternatively, you could also get in touch with the company to find out more information about the role and the name of the recruiter.

If you haven't met the hiring manager, yet, your delivery driver cover letter salutation should be on a last-name basis (e.g. "Dear Mr. Donaldson" or "Dear Ms. Estephan").

A good old, "Dear HR Professional" (or something along those lines) could work as your last resort if you're struggling to find out the recruiter's name.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Hiring Team,
  • Dear [Recipient's Full Name],
  • Dear [Recipient's Title and Last Name],
  • Dear [First Name] [Last Name],

What to include in those first two sentences, or your delivery driver cover letter introduction

Have you ever wondered what the best way is to present your profile in the delivery driver cover letter introduction ?

There's no right or wrong answer if you're being concise and authentic to yourself.

Some professionals start their delivery driver cover letter by:

  • congratulating the company - focusing on something impressive, whether that's an award, an industry-leading project, or a key event;
  • aligning their passion for the field or industry with the job - if you're enthusiastic about what you do, you'd thus grow your skill set and value as a professional.

What to write in the middle or body of your delivery driver cover letter

Here's where it gets tricky.

Your delivery driver cover letter body should present you in the best light possible and, at the same time, differ from your resume.

Don't be stuck in making up new things or copy-pasting from your resume. Instead, select just one achievement from your experience.

Use it to succinctly tell a story of the job-crucial skills and knowledge this taught you.

Your delivery driver cover letter is the magic card you need to further show how any organization or team would benefit from working with you.

Finishing off your delivery driver cover letter with what matters most

So far, you've done a fantastic job in tailoring your delivery driver cover letter for the role and recruiter.

Your final opportunity to make a good impression is your closing paragraph.

And, no, a "Sincerely yours" just won't do, as it sounds too vague and impersonal.

End your delivery driver cover letter with the future in mind.

So, if you get this opportunity, what do you plan to achieve? Be as specific, as possible, of what value you'd bring to the organization.

You could also thank recruiters for their interest in your profile and prompt for follow-up actions (and organizing your first interview).

What could you write about in your delivery driver cover letter when you have no experience

Candidates with zero professional experience often struggle to write their delivery driver cover letter .

You may lack experience, but your application could still be impressive when you focus on your strengths.

Consider your most relevant talents (and/or one achievement) that align with the role and help you stand out.

Perhaps you spent every summer volunteering at your local dog pound - think of the job-relevant skills this experience taught you.

Sharing your tangible career goals is another good strategy to stand out.

Key takeaways

Writing your delivery driver cover letter doesn't need to turn into an endless quest, but instead:

  • Create an individual delivery driver cover letter for each role you apply to, based on job criteria (use our builder to transform your resume into a cover letter, which you could edit to match the job);
  • Stick with the same font you've used in your resume (e.g. Raleway) and ensure your delivery driver cover letter is single-spaced and has a one-inch margin all around;
  • Introduce your enthusiasm for the role or the company at the beginning of your delivery driver cover letter to make a good first impression;
  • Align what matters most to the company by selecting just one achievement from your experience, that has taught you valuable skills and knowledge for the job;
  • End your delivery driver cover letter like any good story - with a promise for greatness or follow-up for an interview.

The rest of this guide gives more specific guidance on how to create your own cover letter in this format, and even includes some templates you can copy and paste.

How to write a Delivery Driver cover letter

Here’s how you can write your own eye-catching cover letter, broken down into simple steps.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When you send a cover letter with a job application, you should always write your message into the body of your email – or the body of the messaging system if you are sending via a job website.

Why do this?

Simply because you want to get your message seen as soon as the recruiter opens your application.

If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To build an instant connection with the recruiter reading your cover letter, start with a warm greeting.

It should be friendly but not casual – keeping it professional at all times.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you have opened the cover letter with a warm greeting, you need to explain which role you are interested in.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant could be managing over 10 vacancies, so it’s crucial to pinpoint exactly which one you are interested in.

Highlight the department/area if possible and look for any reference numbers you can quote.

These are some examples you can add..

  • I am interested in applying for the role of Delivery Driver with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The bulk of your cover letter should be focused around highlighting your suitability for the job you are applying to.

Doing this will show the recruiter that you are suitable candidate and encourage them to open your CV.

The best way to do this, is by studying the job advert you are applying to, and find out what the most important skills and knowledge are.

Once you know the most important requirements, you then need to highlight your matching skills to the recruiter. In a few sentences, tell them exactly why you are a good fit for the job and what you can offer the company.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

A good cover letter is short and sharp, getting to the point quickly with just enough information to grab the attention of recruiters.

Ideally your cover letter should be around 4-8 sentences long – anything longer will risk losing the attention of time-strapped recruiters and hiring managers .

Essentially you need to include just enough information to persuade the reader to open up your CV, where the in-depth details will sit.

Sign off professionally

To round of your CV, you should sign off with a professional signature.

This will give your cover letter a slick appearance and also give the recruiter all of the necessary contact information they need to get in touch with you.

The information to add should include:

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Kindest regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network –  e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Jill North IT Project Manager 078837437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip: To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate documents that you could copy in.

To help you stay on course, we offer valuable advice, effective examples, and compelling templates for crafting a driving cover letter that stands out .

  • Ensuring your driver cover letter resonates with the company's tone

  • Crafting a powerful cover letter introduction as a driver
  • Emphasizing your driving skills and accomplishments
  • Addressing the company's needs in your driver cover letter
  • Ending your cover letter strongly

1. Reflect the company's tone in your driver cover letter

Before crafting your cover letter, research the company you're targeting to understand its overall tone. Look at the company's social media and website, read any blog posts or articles they've written, and see how they describe themselves.

Do they use a lot of industry jargon? Are they more casual or formal? Your cover letter should reflect the company's tone so that they can see that you're a good fit.

If they're formal and corporate, then your letter should be too. But if the company is more laid-back, you can afford to be a little more casual in your language.

Let your cover letter write itself — with AI!

2. use a killer headline in your driver cover letter.

When potential employers read your cover letter, they will first see the headline. So it's important to make sure it's attention-grabbing and relevant to the job you're applying for.

Your headline should give the reader an idea of what they can expect from your letter while also making them want to read on. To write a headline that packs a punch, use active language and focus on your unique skills and qualifications.

Here are some effective headlines for your driver cover letter

Experienced Long-Haul Driver Looking For a New Challenge. Safety-Minded CDL Holder With Five Years of Experience.

Avoid using generic phrases like "looking for a driver position" or "seeking employment." These are dull and don't tell the employer anything about you or what you can bring to the table.

3. Write a powerful cover letter introduction as a driver

Once the reader is hooked with your headline, it's time to give them more information about who you are and what you're looking for. This is your opportunity to make a good first impression, so don't waste it with small talk or irrelevant information.

Although there are different ways to start a cover letter, you can begin by introducing yourself and telling the employer how you heard about the job.

If you have a personal connection to the company (e.g., you know someone who works there), mention it. This will immediately make you more relatable and likable to the reader.

After that, give a brief overview of your experience and qualifications. And finally, explain why you're interested in the job and how you can contribute to the company.

Remember to keep things short and sweet. You want to give the employer just enough information to whet their appetite and make them want to learn more about you. So save the details for later on in the letter.

Here’s an effective introduction from a driver cover letter

Dear Mrs. Chen,

I am a professional driver with 5 years of experience working as a taxi driver, responsibly transporting passengers to their desired destinations. In my former position at [Former Employer], I had the pleasure and opportunity to work with your company’s COO, Jane Smith. After being kind enough to provide feedback on my resume, Ms. Smith strongly recommended I consider applying for a position with your company.

4. Emphasize your driving skills and accomplishments

Now it's time to get into the meat of your cover letter in the body paragraphs and start showing the employer how you're the perfect candidate for the job. This is where you can really sell yourself and your skills, so take your time to craft a well-written and convincing argument .

Start by listing your relevant qualifications and experience, then go into detail about how you would be an asset to the company. Use specific examples, numbers, and language to demonstrate your value. You can start by reviewing driver cover letter samples to understand how to structure your own.

For example, suppose you're applying for a job as a UPS driver . In the body paragraphs of your cover letter, you could mention how you have a perfect driving record and are always punctual and professional with deliveries.

Here’s an example of how to emphasize your skills in a cover letter

I responsibly sorted mail in delivery sequence for 312 active boxes and delivered them along my assigned 23-mile route.

The key is to show how your qualifications and experience match up with the requirements of the job. This will show the employer that you're not just throwing your hat in the ring, but you're genuinely interested in and qualified for the position.

5. Address the company's needs in your driver cover letter

When writing your cover letters, always keep the company's needs in mind. Your goal should be to show how you can help the company achieve its goals, not how the company can help you achieve yours.

To do this, look closely at the job listing and identify what qualities and skills the employer is looking for. Then, focus your cover letter around these qualities and skills.

For example, suppose the job listing is looking for a driver who is "safety-minded" and has "excellent customer service skills."

In your cover letter, you could mention how you have a clean driving record and how you're always careful to follow safety regulations. You could also describe how you're patient and courteous with customers, even when they're rude or difficult.

In other words, you want to make it as easy as possible for the employer to see how you meet their needs. And the best way to do that is to address their requirements in your cover letter directly.

6. End your driver cover letter on a high note

Once you've made your case, it's time to wrap things up in the closing paragraph . Start by thanking the employer for their time and consideration, then reiterate your interest in the job and how you would be an asset to the company.

You could also mention how you'll follow up (e.g., "I'll call you next week to discuss the job further"). And finally, end on a positive note by expressing your confidence that you're the perfect candidate for the job.

Here’s an example of an effective driver cover letter closing statement

I am beyond grateful for your time and consideration, and hope to hear from you shortly regarding this position. The best way to reach me on weekdays is at (123) 456-7890 between the hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., or at [email protected] on weekends. Knowing that you have an incredibly busy schedule, I do plan to follow up next Tuesday if I have not heard back from you.

Many Thanks,

[Applicant Name]

Within the transportation field, delivery drivers focus on mobilizing and delivering a diversity of goods and products. They use motorcycles, vehicles, vans, trucks, and bicycles to collect, carry and deliver the merchandise.

The delivery drivers work for all types of establishments that provide home or door-to-door delivery services, such as couriers, parcels, restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, among others.

The delivery drivers follow the pre-established routes and ensure the package’s delivery in the shortest possible time. Additionally, they use a variety of tools to classify and inventory the assigned packages. In addition to this, they generally require the recipient to sign a form to prove that they received the package.

Their work rarely involves just driving. Plan the schedule, the route, and load the truck, ordering the merchandise to deliver is also a part of their job. Apart from this, unloading the products at the customer’s premises, receiving the billing, and sometimes charging for the merchandise is also done by them. Chauffeurs sometimes have an assistant to help them with loading and unloading jobs, but usually, they carry out their work alone. In the case of furniture, they usually even put them in place at the client’s request.

When most people consider applying for a job, they feel the most challenging part would be writing their resume. Of course, your resume is essential, but it is the accompanying cover letter that makes the vital first impression on a hiring manager that will get you noticed.

Skills and Responsibilities to Include

You need to know what you do if you get behind a motorcycle, car, or truck wheel if you want to be a delivery driver. You will spend most of your workday on the road and be a pleasant driver. Some of the skills you need to acquire for delivery drivers are as follows:

Safe driving skills

For acquiring the delivery driver position, safe driving skills are crucial. Safe driving skills usually include being alert when driving and attentive to what is happening around you and identifying and preventing risks to avoid accidents. The additional skills may include monitoring the vehicle’s condition and making periodic reviews of the unit, and performing minor maintenance or repairs to the vehicle .

Note That: A delivery driver must pay attention to safety.

He should inspect the vehicle for any part malfunction and check the brakes, windshield wipers, and lights. Also, he must drive the vehicle following the pre-established routes, comply with land traffic laws, and park in the areas designated for the loading and unloading of merchandise or package deliveries.

Time management and deadline orientation

Managing your time effectively and working according to pre-established schedules and arriving at the site destined for delivery on time, and following deadlines is necessary for availing this job.

Multitasking

The delivery driver’s job requires a considerable amount of multitasking. A driver has to deliver the package to the corresponding recipient, return the packages to the central office or company when their delivery could not be made, collect the acknowledgments, and charge the shipping cost, if necessary.

Ability to work under pressure

Along with other skills, a delivery driver must have the ability to work under pressure. It includes having an excellent physical condition and endurance and the ability to endure long hours of work and withstand different weather conditions.

Teamwork is another skill that a delivery driver must have as the delivery driver’s job requires a considerable amount of coordination in managing the different package deliveries.

Effective communication

Effective communication will increase your chances of getting the delivery driver position as you have to interact with the packages’ recipients. By having excellent communication skills, you become the link between the company and the clients.

Apart for these, there are a few things that you must have in order to get selected for the job.

  • A valid driver’s license: A valid driver’s license is the first and foremost thing you need to have for acquiring a delivery driver job: to have a valid driver’s license; without a valid license, you do not stand a chance of getting a delivery driver position. The local government issues the driver’s license depending on specific criteria set by them. In some cases, you may have to renew the driving license.
  • A clean driving record: Another thing that is essential for getting the delivery driver job is to have a clean driving record. If you have any lousy history or record, you will not be able to avail of delivery driver jobs; this includes all kinds of fallacies, including drunk driving in some cases.
  • Previous experience working as a delivery driver: If you have experience working as a delivery driver, it will give our other applicants a competitive advantage as logistics companies prefer drivers with experience. For some jobs, it may be necessary for applying for the job.

Parts of a Delivery Driver Cover Letter

Writing a cover letter may seem like a daunting task, but if you successfully tackle each part of the letter, you’ll land a great delivery driver job in no time.

Your cover letter is your chance to highlight the skills and qualifications listed on your resume . It’s a great platform to discuss accomplishments that may not be included in your resume, tell anecdotes to stand out, reiterate the qualifications and experiences listed on your resume, and convey your personality , work style, and professional goals.

A successful delivery driver cover letter should, generally, focus on education, practical life experiences, work ethic , and skill sets.

It’s essential to highlight your customer service skills and professional driving experience in the letter since delivery drivers are tasked with driving and delivering packages in a safe and timely fashion and fostering a friendly reputation for the company they’re employed with.

The best cover letters for delivery driver positions highlight a clean driving record, quality customer service, excellent communication skills , a demonstrated ability to work in changing weather conditions, and experience transporting packages and maintaining delivery vehicles.

Just like a business letter or two-week notice document , your cover letter should be clear, concise, and professional while also conveying your passion and enthusiasm for the opening. Hiring managers and prospective employers are much more likely to call you in for an interview if your cover letter is easy to read and appropriately structured.

Before submitting a cover letter, applicants should proofread and double-check the formatting of their cover letter . Typically, the best cover letters have standard one-inch page margins, are written in a generic font, like Times New Roman, and are organized into grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs.

Following a template or using a sample cover letter, just like the one included below, will help you maintain proper formatting and stay focused when writing.

Delivery Driver Cover Letter Opening

The first few lines of a delivery driver cover letter are essential in making a great first impression on hiring managers and continuing in the interview and onboarding process.

Since hiring managers and prospective employers typically read cover letters before ever meeting or speaking with job applicants, it’s important to be concise in the first paragraph of your cover letter in order to clearly convey your passion and interest in the driving role.

Having the perfect opening paragraph will convince the hiring manager of your interest, compel them to keep reading the rest of your cover letter, and even lead them to spend more time reviewing your application. In this sense, having a solid cover letter opening can help you land job interviews and ultimately land your dream career as a delivery driver.

In delivery driving cover letters, in particular, it’s important that applicants convey their industry expertise right off the bat. A great way of doing this is by explicitly highlighting how many years of commercial driving experience you have or listing your key skills in the first paragraph of your cover letter.

In addition to perfectly crafting the opening lines of your delivery driver cover letter, you’ll also want to make sure to properly address the hiring manager and include a correctly formatted header, as you would in any business or professional letter .

If you’re unsure of the hiring manager’s name, never use “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam.” Use “Dear Hiring Manager” or one of its alternatives instead.

Competition can be tight when applying for commercial driving jobs, so it’s important to stand out and make a positive and lasting first impression on hiring managers in the first few sentences of your cover letter.

Here’s an example of what the opening sentences of a great delivery driver cover letter might look like:

Erin O’Connor Hiring Manager Island Transport Services 101 Leonardo Drive New York, NY 10077 Dear Ms. O’Connor, I am writing to express my interest in the Delivery Driver position with Island Transport Services. I am confident that my customer service skills and experience as a professional Delivery Driver would be a great benefit to your company. I am highly motivated, have a valid commercial driver ’s license and clean driving record, and remain focused under pressure.

Delivery driver cover letter body.

The body section of your delivery driver cover letter is where you can really dive deep into explaining your most desirable skills and qualifications. Your ultimate goal in the middle few paragraphs of your cover letter is to prove to the hiring manager that you’re the best applicant for the position.

Job seekers applying for delivery driver roles should use the body of their cover letter to explain their previous work experience in detail, discuss their key skills and qualifications, and point out specific ways in which they communicate with delivery teams, guarantee customer satisfaction, ensure accurate service, and deliver packages safely and promptly.

Remember, reliability, quality customer service, and a clean driving record are some of the most highly sought qualities of successful delivery drivers. The body paragraphs of your cover letter should clearly portray your interpersonal skills and driving expertise.

It’s always a good idea to closely read the specific job posting you’re applying to before writing the body of your cover letter. You should trailer this section of your cover letter in particular to the skills, qualifications, and work responsibilities listed in the ad.

For instance, if the description lists quality customer service as an example, you might want to highlight an occasion where you were able to deliver top-notch service to a client by delivering their products on time and addressing any concerns they may have had.

Additionally, if you know anyone at the company you’re applying to who has agreed to write you a recommendation letter or give you a professional reference , the body of your cover letter is a great place to include that referral.

Here’s an effective sample that you can use as a template when writing the body paragraphs of your delivery driver cover letter:

Throughout the course of my career as a Delivery Driver, I have perfected my route planning abilities and mastered my time-management and communication skills. In my previous position as a Delivery Driver with Whalebone Delivery, where I worked for the last five years, I identified gaps in delivery services and developed methods to strengthen their delivery model and maintain excellent customer service. I have a proven track record of meeting all Department of Transportation safety standards and delivering packages on time. In my ten years as a delivery driver, I have never misplaced a package or failed a pre-or post-trip safety inspection. I am committed to maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction and creating a friendly and driven reputation for Island Transport Services.

Delivery Driver Cover Letter Closing Lines

To wrap up your cover letter, you’ll want to tie up any loose ends, summarize your experience, skills, and passion, and close the document with a professional salutation. The conclusion of your cover letter should emphasize your interest in getting hired for the role.

The best cover letters end by asking for a phone or in-person interview or showing interest in continuing in the hiring process.

Conveying your enthusiasm for the role and thanking the hiring manager for their time spent reviewing your cover letter and job application will also up your chances of getting a callback and landing an in-person job interview.

Lastly, make sure you close your delivery driver internship cover letter with an appropriate salutation and a professional signature that includes your contact information.

An excellent way of closing your delivery driver cover letter is like this:

As an experienced Delivery Driver with high-level customer service skills, I am excited at the opportunity to put my qualifications to use as a delivery driver at Island Transport Services. If given the opportunity to join your driving team, you can count on me to perform all duties with focus, integrity, and expert attention to detail. I welcome the chance to discuss this position and explain, in detail, what I can offer your company. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. What does a driver do?

Drivers are transportation professionals who transport passengers, goods, or vehicles. They seek to provide efficient and safe travel and please customers. Drivers must be able to easily determine the fastest driving routes. They have excellent judgment and are able to make confident decisions quickly. An ideal candidate for a driver position possesses excellent mechanical, navigation, and troubleshooting skills.

Here are some of the common duties of drivers:

  • Load cargo at warehouses and shipping centers
  • Make deliveries to homes and businesses
  • Complete delivery paperwork and obtain customer signatures
  • Accept and process payments
  • Maintain vehicles or report problems to supervisors
  • Pick up and drop off passengers
  • Clean vehicles
  • Help load and unload passengers and belongings
  • Follow predetermined routes avoiding delays

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the following 2021 data for drivers in three  categories.

$37,540 12%
(triple the occupational average of 4%)
$36,660 11%
(much higher than average)
$48,310 4%
(about average)

Although driving positions may sometimes be considered entry-level, they are often highly competitive. Drivers can earn decent income without ever facing a shortage of hours. Some large delivery companies even require that candidates for driver positions first gain experience in the warehouse.

How to write a driver resume

To beat out the competition, you'll need a resume that sets you apart. It also means you’ll need a different custom-tailored version of your resume for each driver job application. But first, let’s look at the basic framework of components that all resumes have in common:

  • Employment history

Before taking a closer look at each of these resume sections, we have some advice about gearing your resume to the specific job and employer.

As you'll see in later guide sections, your resume should highlight your ability to ensure proper vehicle function and safe travel at all times. It should provide assurance that you are knowledgeable about the systems of a vehicle and able to handle a variety of issues ranging from simple to complex. Your superior navigation skills and ability to plan efficient routes should also come across. A winning driver resume sample should showcase excellent communication skills , as well as superior customer service skills.

According to the Financial Times , delivery drivers are one of the few professions that were positively affected by the health crisis in 2020. With more people staying at home and ordering online, demand for delivery drivers has skyrocketed.

In need of more inspiration? Have a look at these resume samples and writing guides for other transportation occupations as follows:

In addition to impressing the hiring manager with your knowledge and understanding of what’s expected from the driver being recruited, there’s another important reason for reading and understanding the job description carefully. In fact, before your resume will be seen by human eyes, there’s a good chance it must first pass through an applicant tracking system (ATS), which a growing number of today’s large and medium-sized companies have implemented as a digital screen.

The ATS scans your resume for keywords and then ranks your resume against those received by other candidates. Only the top-scoring applications will be passed on to a human hiring manager. While this process saves the employer a considerable amount of time, it also means you could spend hours on a resume only to be filtered out by a machine.

Luckily, there are simple yet effective ways to protect your resume from ATS rejection:

  • Understand the hiring process for drivers and the most requested skills.
  • Use keywords from the job description strategically throughout your resume.
  • Format your resume so that is it well-organized and easy to read for both the humans and robots.

"Keyword" is just a fancy way of saying an important skill or experience noted on the job description. If a skill or phrase is repeated multiple times, that's a good sign it is probably a keyword. Make sure to incorporate the exact phrasing of these words naturally throughout your resume, paying special attention to the summary and skills section. Never force keywords that don't make sense or are untrue — you may fool the ATS but the hiring manager will likely give you the cold shoulder.

Choosing the best resume format for a driver

In about 90% of instances, regardless of occupation — the chronological resume format is recommended and used with good reason. Recruiters prefer it because they can easily tell at a glance how much of the most relevant experience you have. The emphasis is on your professional experience, outlined in the employment history section. For each previous job, descriptive bullet points are listed each employer heading and date, organized in order from most recent to earliest dates.

There are two other resume formats that sometimes work well for workforce newcomers or those changing careers. The functional and hybrid (combination) formats allow some flexibility in putting your skills or education above the employment history section.

A distinctive resume header is like your personal brand, setting your job application apart from the rest. It has both a practical and esthetic purpose in creating a memorable first impression. It draws the reader’s eye to your personal information on the page: name, occupation, email and phone number. Recruiters will find it easy to go back to your shortlisted resume later and instantly know how to get in touch with you for an interview. The white space surrounding the body text makes the page look easier on the eyes and more inviting to read overall.

Driver resume summary example: Gearing up for success

Your resume summary is just what it sounds like: a place on your resume to offer a bit of your skills, experience and qualifications. A great summary (sometimes called profile or personal statement ) shouldn't be boring. Even though drivers may spend hours alone on the road, they still need to have some customer service skills and a generally pleasant demeanor — no one wants to work with a grouch! So your resume summary should give a hint of your personality and attitude

Remember to use as many powerful action verbs and job-specific information as you can. Highlighting your key attributes and talents that prove your qualifications and accomplishments is crucial.

Check out the summary section from our driver resume sample:

Personable and reliable Driver with 15 years of experience working in the transportation of goods and passengers. Successful career history is documented by dozens of commendations from satisfied passengers and clients, and an unblemished traffic safety record. Expertise and experience performing maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles contributes to significant cost savings for the employer and reduced service down time.

Employment history example: A great track-record

Your employment history sectopm is the place to showcase previous work experience . First, list the name of the employer, the location and the dates you worked there. Underneath, you can create 3-5 bullet points that highlight your most relevant skills. Remember to use powerful action verbs and mention job specific accomplishments that prove you are an excellent candidate.

If you have at least three positions related to driving, you may want to leave unrelated work experience off your resume. If this is your first driving job, use your employment history section to point out transferable skills that will help you quickly adapt to the driving role. Whenever possible, use numbers and percentages to quantify the bullet points regarding your your achievements and prove your value.

Here's the employment history section from our driver resume example:

Driver at Albert's Trucking Company, Phoenix April 2013 - August 2023

  • Logged 200,000+ accident-free miles delivering goods for clients primarily in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico.
  • Delivered on schedule 97% of the time by adjusting routes to traffic conditions.
  • Proactively identified and resolved vehicle maintenance issues to save the company $6,000 per year on average.
  • Maintained 100% clean traffic safety and drug screening test record.
  • Helped recruit and train 17 new drivers, including instruction in routine vehicle maintenance.

Driver at Bears Bus Charters, Phoenix September 2008 - March 2013

  • Drove 20-passenger tour buses on half-day or full-day excursions within Arizona and longer overnight trips to neighboring states.
  • Received a 5-star rating from 250+ clients.
  • Performed routine vehicle maintenance, including regular oil changes, wheel rotations and tune-ups.
  • Named “Safe Driver of the Month” three times by the employer.

CV skills example: Accelerating your career

The skills section is at the heart of a great CV. Make sure to include any hard skills from the job posting, like a clean driving record, mechanic experience or shipment tracking software. A driver resume sample should also include several soft skills like communication, efficiency or organization to show that you're a well-rounded candidate.

Here's the skills section from our driver resume example:

  • Hand-Eye Coordination
  • Safe Driving Skills
  • Manual Dexterity
  • Ability to read maps
  • Strong Customer Service Skills

Driver resume education section example: The right direction

Since many drivers can begin working without a college degree, you won't have to worry about creating a lengthy education section on your resume. However, some large shipping companies are known to prefer college student drivers, so listing a degree in progress in this section may increase your odds of landing the job. If you hold a degree higher than a bachelor degree, you may leave out your high school information.

While drivers might not need much formal education, their certifications are essential for the job. List your licenses and their numbers here. If you've completed any training like hazmat driving or road safety courses, you should include it in your education example.

Here's the education section from our driver resume example:

Class B Commercial Driver's License, Phoenix Driving School, Phoenix August 2005

High School Diploma, Morris High School, Morris September 2005 - June 2009

Resume layout and design

Your essential driving qualifications won't amount to much if the information is not well organized in your resume page layout. It should allow both the ATS and the hiring manager to quickly find the information they are looking for. Use traditional section headings like "Education" or "Work Experience" so as not to confuse the reader.

When it comes to the design and formatting elements of your driver resume, we recommend keeping it simple, with sparing use of color and design elements. Readability and organization are key.

If you don't have time to fuss with these visual considerations, or would prefer not to, using one of Resume.io's field-tested resume templates can help.
