Math is one of the most essential skills that students learn in school. Unfortunately, many students hate math and see it as a difficult subject. This doesn’t have to be the case though! With the right math apps and tools, students can enjoy practicing math and improve their skills. This article will list the 107 best math apps for K-12 students. These apps are recommended by teachers and have been proven to help students learn and practice math in a fun way!

As well as being a teacher I’m a mother too. If you’re a parent like me, you want your child to understand math. As a high school mathematics teacher since 2007, I have worked with students of all abilities including learning disabilities across a range of different schools.

It is based on a pedagogical method from Norway that focuses on discovery and experimentation.

Whilst these are great math apps for homeschooling and complement learning math in real life around the home, they are not exclusively used for homeschooling. Anyone can use these apps to learn and develop key math skills.

Students are given ten questions to review and consolidate their understanding of any topic. They can choose a topic or it can be assigned by their teacher.

Students love changing their avatar and playing LIVE Mathletics where they can compete against students from all over the world.

DragonBox Numbers is a game that teaches children the concepts of counting, addition, and subtraction by developing their number sense. The game is simple to use and enjoyable, yet it provides your kids with the foundations they’ll need for future math learning. Suitable for 4-8-year-olds.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well. 

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.  

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class. 

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?” 

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned. 

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating. 

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later. 

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

It’s a positive thing to have good math skills almost no matter what profession you choose. People look for math apps for a variety of reasons, but most of them are educational. It works for more than just math. However, we imagine quite a few of the problems there are math related. Supported education levels include elementary school through some college. HiPER is an excellent scientific calculator. This one should work for grade school and collegiate level mathematics. The free version features ten digits along with three exponential digits. The premium version increases that to 100 regular digits and nine exponential digits. That’s insane. Some other features include complex numbers, conversion among 200 units, support for fractions, and tons of other stuff. We used to recommend RealCalc. However, HiPER takes the cake overall. It’s arguably the best scientific calculator on Google Play. The premium version is a single $3.49 and we think that’s reasonable.

Khan Academy is one of the more traditional math apps. It lets you review and re-learn math (and other subjects) in a course-like environment. The app includes over 10,000 videos, 40,000 questions, and tons of different types of math. That includes stats, trigonometry, calculus, basic algebra, pre-algebra, arithmetic, and many more. You can take and retake as many of the same courses as you want to learn new things or as a refresher for stuff you used to know. Khan Academy’s best feature is its price. It’s completely free to use forever. That makes it a must for math apps.

LectureNotes is one of the most popular note-taking apps on mobile. It’s built with education in mind. The app lets you take notes, draw and write by hand, and even record your teacher’s lecture for later listening. The drawing by hand feature is especially useful for math students where typing equations on a calculator just isn’t cutting it. Some other features include support for OneNote and Evernote, indexing and organization features, and even video recording. Some features require additional plugins. Those plugins may cost additional money. Otherwise, the app is one of the best math apps for sure.

MyScript Calculator 2 is a neat math app for middle school, high school, and some college students. It’s a calculator but it doesn’t look or act like a regular calculator app. Instead, you write down the equation in the app like you would on paper. The app uses OCR to turn your handwriting into text and then it solves the problem from there. The app includes support for basic operations like addition and substraction, powers, roots, exponents, trigonometry, logarithms, constants (like pi), and more. It gets less useful once you get into the super high math subjects, but it’s otherwise a surprisingly cool math app.

Photomath is one of a few decent math apps with camera functionality. You basically take a picture of the problem on your paper. It provides step-by-step instruction on solving the problem, the various math needed to solve the problem, and whatever else you might need. The app supports graphs. However, it won’t replace your standard graphing calculator anytime soon. It’s an excellent study aid for middle and high school students especially with its explanations on how to solve problems. The app is free to use. Google Play says there are in-app purchases up to $9.99, but we used the free version of the app. Microsoft has a math app that works very similarly to this one and we totally recommend it as well.

Socratic is one of the newer math apps. Well, technically, it covers a variety of subjects. It works a lot like Photomath. You take a picture of your homework problem. The app spits out results, explanations, a step-by-step process to solve the problem, and more. It even includes video examples in some cases. Like most, there is a ceiling when it comes to how complex the problem can be. However, it should work for most people. It’s also completely free with no in-app purchases. Google purchased and re-released the app in 2020 so we link to Google’s version now.

Wolfram math apps

Price: Free / Up to $4.99

Wolfram has a bunch of decent math apps. The first app to check out is WolframAlpha. It contains a database of math results, help, explanations, and other information. WolframAlpha covers basically everything you can think of, including more complex stuff like number theory, discrete math, statistics, physics, chemistry, and more. It also features course-style apps for many types of math, including pre-algebra, linear algebra, discrete math, and more. Some of these apps are pretty old, though. We recommend trying them out quickly before the Google Play refund time expires.

YouTube is good for basically everything. That makes it one of the better math apps. There are a variety of content creators that deal with math. That includes straight lessons and explanations, number theory, math fun facts, math history, practical uses, and more. Some math-related channels like Numberphile and Mathologer are actually quite popular and entertaining. As usual, YouTube is completely free to use with advertising. YouTube Red removes advertising, allows for background play, and allows for offline play for $9.99 per month.

A little confession from me. I was homeschooled (that's not the confession part), and in 8th grade my algebra textbook had the answers to half the problems in the back. And when I was stumped, I would cheat.

Sorry, mom!

Of course, cheating at math is a terrible way to learn, because the whole point isn't to know the answer to 2x + 2 = 7x - 5, it's to understand the methodology that can solve any like problem.

But what if you could cheat at your homework and learn? That seems to be the premise behind app called Socratic . Or at least that's my takeaway. The app lets you take a picture of a problem (you can also type it in, but that's a little laborious), and it'll not only give you an answer, but the steps necessary to to arrive at that answer — and even detailed explanations of the steps and concepts if you need them.

The app is actually designed to answer any kind of school question — science, history, etc. — but the math thing is the slickest part. For other kinds of questions, Socratic kind of does a bit of Googling, and in my experience can typically find similar word problems on the wide internet, or from its own database of answers. On about half the middle school science problems I tried, the app was able to identify the topic at question and show me additional resources about the concepts involved, but for others it was no more powerful than a simple web search.

But for algebra this thing is sick. I pointed it at 2x + 2 = 7x - 5, which I wrote down at random, and it gave me a 10 step process that results in x = 7/5. It has trouble with word problems, but if you can write down a word problem in math notation it shouldn't be an issue. I also tried it on a weird fraction from an AP algebra exam, which it kind of failed at, but then I swiped over and it was showing me this graph, which included the correct answer:

I love this app, not just because it would've helped 8th grade Paul out of a jam, but because it's such a computery use of computers. You use the tiny computer in your pocket to be basically smarter than you already are. It's technology that augments a human brain, not just a distraction.

The creator of Socratic just open sourced its step-by-step solver , called mathsteps. There are a lot of computer-based algebra solvers out there, but for Socratic they had to do some extra engineering to get at the steps a human would need to solve the same problem.

Also, I'd be remiss not to mention Photomath , which has been doing this since 2014, and actually has step-by-step explanations in the recently released Photomath+ paid version (there's a free trial). I like the Socratic interface and explanations a bit better, but I'm glad to see this is a vibrant market.

I tried a few algebra questions where both performed well. However, Cymath often showed errors when I ran trigonometry questions.

In conclusion, if you want to cover a large area of subjects and want extreme accuracy, Mathway is still better.

Cymath shines in a few other aspects, for example, the history section and the ability to bookmark solutions. This comes in handy whenever you are stuck and wish to refer to an old problem. In addition, it also has a learning tab that has common references, practice questions and also discusses one problem each week. The plus version comes at $4.99/month. It removes ads, shows the step-by-step solutions, and even answer why a certain step is used (in addition to how).

The calculation is also extremely easy. All you have to do is add the variables and the app will show you all the results live as you change these variables in real-time. In case you do not want to rely on the auto-calculation feature, it shows all the formulae in the same tab for quick reference as well. While all the formulas are free, the calculator for several figures is locked. On the plus side, you can simply watch a 15 seconds video ad to unlock them. If the app can scan the question successfully, you’ll get a preview for the same. If it’s not accurate you have the option to edit the question. You can also view the solution step-wise. Google also has another problem-solving app Socratic ( iOS , Android ) that covers all subjects. You can try that as well however it doesn’t allow you to upload questions from your gallery. Hence when your friends send you a problem on WhatsApp, using the Google Search app is a better solution.

ChatGPT has already wreaked havoc on classrooms and changed how teachers approach writing homework, since OpenAI publicly launched the generative AI chatbot in late 2022. School administrators rushed to try to detect AI-generated essays , and in turn, students scrambled to find out how to cloak their synthetic compositions. But by focusing on writing assignments, educators let another seismic shift take place in the periphery: students using AI more often to complete math homework too.

Right now, high schoolers and college students around the country are experimenting with free smartphone apps that help complete their math homework using generative AI . One of the most popular options on campus right now is the Gauth app , with millions of downloads. It’s owned by ByteDance, which is also TikTok’s parent company.

The Gauth app first launched in 2019 with a primary focus on mathematics, but soon expanded to other subjects as well, like chemistry and physics. It’s grown in relevance, and neared the top of smartphone download lists earlier this year for the education category. Students seem to love it. With hundreds of thousands of primarily positive reviews, Gauth has a favorable 4.8 star rating in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store .

All students have to do after downloading the app is point their smartphone at a homework problem, printed or handwritten, and then make sure any relevant information is inside of the image crop. Then Gauth’s AI model generates a step-by-step guide, often with the correct answer.

From our testing on high-school-level algebra and geometry homework samples, Gauth’s AI tool didn’t deliver A+ results and particularly struggled with some graphing questions. It performed well enough to get around a low B grade or a high C average on the homework we fed it. Not perfect, but also likely good enough to satisfy bored students who'd rather spend their time after school doing literally anything else.

The app struggled more on higher levels of math, like Calculus 2 problems, so students further along in their educational journey may find less utility in this current generation of AI homework-solving apps.

Yes, generative AI tools , with a foundation in natural language processing, are known for failing to generate accurate answers when presented with complex math equations. But researchers are focused on improving AI’s abilities in this sector, and an entry-level high school math class is likely well within the reach of current AI homework apps. Will has even written about how researchers at Google DeepMind are ecstatic about recent results from testing a math-focused large language model, called AlphaProof , on problems shown at this year’s International Math Olympiad.

To be fair, Gauth positions itself as an AI study company that’s there to “ace your homework” and help with difficult problems, rather than a cheating aid. The company even goes so far as to include an “ Honor Code ” on its website dictating proper usage. “Resist the temptation to use Gauth in ways that go against your values or school’s expectations,” reads the company’s website. So basically, Gauth implicitly acknowledges impulsive teenagers may use the app for much more than the occasional stumper, and wants them to pinkie promise that they’ll behave.

Prior to publication, a spokesperson for ByteDance did not answer a list of questions about the Gauth app when contacted by WIRED over email.

It’s easy to focus on Gauth’s limitations, but millions of students now have a free app in their pocket that can walk them through various math problems in seconds , with decent accuracy. This concept would be almost inconceivable to students from even a few years ago.

You could argue that Gauth promotes accessibility for students who don’t have access to quality education or who process information at a slower pace than their teacher’s curriculum. It’s a perspective shared by proponents of using AI tools, like ChatGPT, in the classroom. As long as the students all make it to the same destination, who cares what path they took on the journey? And isn’t this just the next evolution in our available math tools? We moved on from the abacus to the graphing calculator, so why not envision generative AI as another critical step forward?

I see value in teachers thoughtfully employing AI in the classroom for specific lessons or to provide students with more personalized practice questions. But I can’t get out of my head how this app, if students overly rely on it, could hollow out future generations’ critical thinking skills—often gleaned from powering through frustrating math classes and tough homework assignments. (I totally get it, though, as an English major.)

Educational leaders are missing the holistic picture if they continue to focus on AI-generated essays as the primary threat that could undermine the current approach to teaching. Instead of arduous assignments to complete outside of class, maybe centering in-class math practice could continue to facilitate positive learning outcomes in the age of AI.

If Gauth and apps like it eventually lead to the demise of math homework for high schoolers, throngs of students will breathe a collective sigh of relief. How will parents and educators respond? I’m not so sure. That remains an open question, and one for which Gauth can’t calculate an answer yet either.

A wonderful app

Very helpful app I was needing something to help me with my daughter’s homework my daughter is horrible on taking notes in school. And if I have notes to see the task I’m good at figuring it out how to do the rest so I tried this help because I couldn’t find anything online to help me. So when this can’t up I was like why not. And I was glad I did it tells u how to solve it. And I could figure out the rest by their help. The only thing I would like if they make another app or add on this this one for younger kids. I know a couple of parents that also need help with there kid’s homework (how to help there child I don’t do it for my kids do there homework but I have to explain it to them sometimes and for that I need to refresh my mind as will) and this is a great app for that just hope they for something god younger students grades 2nd to 5th graders would help parents a lot.

Great App / One Major Issue

I love this app. Its saved me multiple times on upcoming tests, and the great thing about it is it thoroughly goes through the topic step-by-step making sure you understand how the AI got to the solution. All that to be said, I really wish there was a feature to edit the text that was scanned in the picture. I think its already an intended design because theres text displayed saying if you’d made typos heres the time to fix it, but it doesn't work. Tapping on the screen doesn't do anything. You can copy and paste the text but theres no way to edit it where the users keyboard opens. This is a 10/10 if I could edit the prompt.

The Mathist

What permissions are required by the app.

Email is required for direct support, feedback and friendly communication. Basic friends information is used for notes sharing and unique social expirience.

How to log out?

Choose the Settings option from the menu on the top and click on the Log out option in a window that will appear.

How to delete my account?

If you do not want to have The Mathist account anymore, choose Settings option from the menu on the top and in a pop-up window, choose delete account.

How to create a new note?

When in the Notes section, click on the New Note button, and the note editor will open.

How to delete a note?

In the Notes section press the icon under the note’s title to delete the note.

How to save a note?

The notes are automatically saved every few seconds so there’s no need for you to manually save them or worry if they will be lost if you don’t save them and accidentally leave the app or lose the internet connection.

Where to find more formulas?

For writing integrals, summations, multiplications etc, start typing the name of what you need inside your formula and then press one of the formulas from the drop down menu that will appear.

Where to find Greek symbols?

Just start typing the name of the symbol that you need and then press one of the symbols from the drop down menu that will appear. If you can't remember the name, open the virtual keyboard, and then in the bottom left of the keyboard press the gear icon. There you can select the Greek virtual keyboard.

How to open the virtual keyboard?

Click on the button in the bottom right corner of the note.

How to use the Wolfram Alpha feature?

Wolfram Alpha feature enables you to solve the equations, find approximate values of expressions, plot graphs etc. Wolfram | Alpha support is comming soon to the new editor. Thanks for your patience.

How to change the font size?

Click on the Settings option from the menu on the top and choose between three offered font sizes. It will apply both to the font size in the note and to the font size on other pages.
