Is it Ethical to Use AI for Thesis Writing?

The ethical considerations of using AI for thesis writing are a significant topic in academic discussions. As an expert thesis writer working in a content publishing house for years in America, I’ve seen firsthand how AI can both aid and complicate the writing process . The key question is how these AI tools are used.

From my experience, using AI tools ethically in thesis writing can enhance the writing process without compromising integrity . For instance, I often utilize tools like Jasper AI and Rytr to help refine drafts , ensuring clarity and coherence in complex arguments.

These AI tools for thesis writing can assist in organizing thoughts, checking grammar, and improving the logical flow , similar to how software aids in data analysis without replacing the researcher’s insight.

However, ethical concerns arise when AI is used to generate substantial portions of a thesis without proper oversight or understanding. This practice can undermine the learning process and the student’s own intellectual contribution. The best approach is to use AI tools as support mechanisms , ensuring that the final product truly reflects the student’s knowledge and efforts .

Transparency is also essential. If AI tools are utilized, students should disclose this in their methodology , adhering to academic honesty principles. This helps educators understand the role AI plays in the work. Utilizing the best AI thesis writer ethically involves leveraging their capabilities to enhance quality and efficiency while maintaining the originality and integrity of academic work.

The 5 Best AI Tools for Postgraduate Research

ai writing master thesis

What's the most challenging part of working towards your postgraduate degree? For many students, combing through mountains of research presents an insurmountable obstacle.

For one thing, the sheer volume of research articles you have to read is overwhelming. On top of that, research material isn't exactly an easy read, and sifting through each article to glean the relevant information you need takes a great deal of time and effort. Organizing your thoughts and then putting them on paper in a thoughtful, meaningful - and academic - way is yet another challenge in postgraduate research.

Thankfully, artificial intelligence (AI) can help make your postgraduate study life a whole lot easier. In this article, we'll explore 5 of the best AI tools for academic researchers and postgraduate students so that you save time and energy and stay motivated!

5 Best AI Tools for Postgraduate Research

1. semantic scholar, ai-powered academic search engine.

Most people know about Google Scholar: the power of Google applied to research papers. If you're doing any form of scientific research though, you might want to give Semantic Scholar a go. This AI-powered search and discovery tool allows you to stay up to date with more than 200 million academic papers sourced from publisher partnerships, data providers, and web crawls. Its AI algorithms help you to discover hidden connections and links between research topics, and recommend similar papers based on the research you've already saved, to generate more relevant search results for you.

It can also automatically generate single-sentence summaries of each paper to help you prioritize which academic papers to read in-depth, so you spend your time on what matters the most.

AI-powered Research Organization

Being able to scour the web for online research is a gift. But with it comes two issues - the volume of information available, and the fact that all of this information comes in a range of formats, including blogs, articles, videos, infographics, and images. Identifying and sorting all the information that is relevant to different aspects of your research can be a time-consuming task on its own.

‍ Bit.ai helps you identify and save relevant research - even interactive, media-rich research. As a cloud-based collaborative platform, it also lets you easily share this content with fellow co-researchers in real-time.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned." When you have all your research notes and references in one easy space, it keeps you more organised, and more focused as a result.

3. Scholarcy

Ai-powered research summarization.

Wouldn't it be amazing if you could get someone to read all the academic articles you’ve saved and pull out the most important points so that you don’t have to spend hours skim-reading articles to find the most useful ones? Happily, Scholarcy does just that.

Using deep learning technology, it reads your articles, reports, and book chapters, breaking them down into bite-sized sections and highlighting key information such as important findings, limitations, and comparisons with earlier studies. Scholarcy lets you quickly screen the literature and find out, at a glance, how relevant a document is to your research. Feedback from researchers and students shows that Scholarcy can reduce the time screening articles by up to 70%. That leaves you more time to dive into the most relevant papers in detail.

Scholarcy also has a browser extension that works with both open access and your subscription services. It turns all citations into links so you can effortlessly jump straight to related research.

AI-powered Citation Evaluation

Researching and citing information isn't always enough. It’s the context of that cited research that is key. That's where Scite comes in. This handy tool not only lets you see how many times an article has been cited, and in what context, but also helps you uncover other related research.

In the continually evolving world of scientific research, Scite helps you keep track of whether an article has been supported or questioned by other authors, even bringing relevant editorial notices or retractions to your attention.

AI-powered Research Paper Writing

Trinka is an AI-powered writing assistant created with academic writing in mind, meaning it'll spot errors in technical and scientific writing that other common grammar and spelling tools may miss. So whether you're working on a paper in the field of medicine or economics, Trinka will be able to recommend improvements relevant to your particular subject.

Trinka will also identify and correct your vocabulary, grammar, spelling, syntax use, tone, and more. It can even make suggestions to make your academic paper more compliant with the APA or AMA style guides.

Research is what powers the world to move forward, and now AI technology is powering scientific discovery forward at an even faster rate. Research processes that would usually take hours digging through publication after publication can now be done in a fraction of the time.

So if you're still doing research the old-fashioned way, save yourself some time - and sanity! - and try some of these AI-powered tools.

How to Write a Better Thesis Statement Using AI (2023 Updated)

Meredith Sell

With the exceptions of poetry and fiction, every piece of writing needs a thesis statement.

- Opinion pieces for the local newspaper? Yes.

- An essay for a college class? You betcha.

- A book about China’s Ming Dynasty? Absolutely.

All of these pieces of writing need a thesis statement that sums up what they’re about and tells the reader what to expect, whether you’re making an argument, describing something in detail, or exploring ideas.

But how do you write a thesis statement? How do you even come up with one?

ai writing master thesis

This step-by-step guide will show you exactly how — and help you make sure every thesis statement you write has all the parts needed to be clear, coherent, and complete.

Let’s start by making sure we understand what a thesis is (and what it’s not).

What Is a Thesis Statement?

A thesis statement is a one or two sentence long statement that concisely describes your paper’s subject, angle or position — and offers a preview of the evidence or argument your essay will present.

A thesis is not:

  • An exclamation
  • A simple fact

Think of your thesis as the road map for your essay. It briefly charts where you’ll start (subject), what you’ll cover (evidence/argument), and where you’ll land (position, angle).

Writing a thesis early in your essay writing process can help you keep your writing focused, so you won’t get off-track describing something that has nothing to do with your central point. Your central point is your thesis, and the rest of your essay fleshes it out.

Different Kinds of Papers Need Different Kinds of Theses

How you compose your thesis will depend on the type of essay you’re writing. For academic writing, there are three main kinds of essays:

  • Persuasive, aka argumentative
  • Expository, aka explanatory

A persuasive essay requires a thesis that clearly states the central stance of the paper , what the rest of the paper will argue in support of.

Paper books are superior to ebooks when it comes to form, function, and overall reader experience.

An expository essay’s thesis sets up the paper’s focus and angle — the paper’s unique take, what in particular it will be describing and why . The why element gives the reader a reason to read; it tells the reader why the topic matters.

Understanding the functional design of physical books can help ebook designers create digital reading experiences that usher readers into literary worlds without technological difficulties.

A narrative essay is similar to that of an expository essay, but it may be less focused on tangible realities and more on intangibles of, for example, the human experience.

The books I’ve read over the years have shaped me, opening me up to worlds and ideas and ways of being that I would otherwise know nothing about.

As you prepare to craft your thesis, think through the goal of your paper. Are you making an argument? Describing the chemical properties of hydrogen? Exploring your relationship with the outdoors? What do you want the reader to take away from reading your piece?

Make note of your paper’s goal and then walk through our thesis-writing process.

Now that you practically have a PhD in theses, let’s learn how to write one:

How to Write (and Develop) a Strong Thesis

If developing a thesis is stressing you out, take heart — basically no one has a strong thesis right away. Developing a thesis is a multi-step process that takes time, thought, and perhaps most important of all: research .

Tackle these steps one by one and you’ll soon have a thesis that’s rock-solid.

1. Identify your essay topic.

Are you writing about gardening? Sword etiquette? King Louis XIV?

With your assignment requirements in mind, pick out a topic (or two) and do some preliminary research . Read up on the basic facts of your topic. Identify a particular angle or focus that’s interesting to you. If you’re writing a persuasive essay, look for an aspect that people have contentious opinions on (and read our piece on persuasive essays to craft a compelling argument).

If your professor assigned a particular topic, you’ll still want to do some reading to make sure you know enough about the topic to pick your specific angle.

For those writing narrative essays involving personal experiences, you may need to do a combination of research and freewriting to explore the topic before honing in on what’s most compelling to you.

Once you have a clear idea of the topic and what interests you, go on to the next step.

2. Ask a research question.

You know what you’re going to write about, at least broadly. Now you just have to narrow in on an angle or focus appropriate to the length of your assignment. To do this, start by asking a question that probes deeper into your topic.

This question may explore connections between causes and effects, the accuracy of an assumption you have, or a value judgment you’d like to investigate, among others.

For example, if you want to write about gardening for a persuasive essay and you’re interested in raised garden beds, your question could be:

What are the unique benefits of gardening in raised beds versus on the ground? Is one better than the other?

Or if you’re writing about sword etiquette for an expository essay , you could ask:

How did sword etiquette in Europe compare to samurai sword etiquette in Japan?

How does medieval sword etiquette influence modern fencing?

Kickstart your curiosity and come up with a handful of intriguing questions. Then pick the two most compelling to initially research (you’ll discard one later).

3. Answer the question tentatively.

You probably have an initial thought of what the answer to your research question is. Write that down in as specific terms as possible. This is your working thesis .

Gardening in raised beds is preferable because you won’t accidentally awaken dormant weed seeds — and you can provide more fertile soil and protection from invasive species.

Medieval sword-fighting rituals are echoed in modern fencing etiquette.

Why is a working thesis helpful?

Both your research question and your working thesis will guide your research. It’s easy to start reading anything and everything related to your broad topic — but for a 4-, 10-, or even 20-page paper, you don’t need to know everything. You just need the relevant facts and enough context to accurately and clearly communicate to your reader.

Your working thesis will not be identical to your final thesis, because you don’t know that much just yet.

This brings us to our next step:

4. Research the question (and working thesis).

What do you need to find out in order to evaluate the strength of your thesis? What do you need to investigate to answer your research question more fully?

Comb through authoritative, trustworthy sources to find that information. And keep detailed notes.

As you research, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your thesis — and see what other opposing or more nuanced theses exist.

If you’re writing a persuasive essay, it may be helpful to organize information according to what does or does not support your thesis — or simply gather the information and see if it’s changing your mind. What new opinion do you have now that you’ve learned more about your topic and question? What discoveries have you made that discredit or support your initial thesis?

Raised garden beds prevent full maturity in certain plants — and are more prone to cold, heat, and drought.

If you’re writing an expository essay, use this research process to see if your initial idea holds up to the facts. And be on the lookout for other angles that would be more appropriate or interesting for your assignment.

Modern fencing doesn’t share many rituals with medieval swordplay.

With all this research under your belt, you can answer your research question in-depth — and you’ll have a clearer idea of whether or not your working thesis is anywhere near being accurate or arguable. What’s next?

5. Refine your thesis.

If you found that your working thesis was totally off-base, you’ll probably have to write a new one from scratch.

For a persuasive essay , maybe you found a different opinion far more compelling than your initial take. For an expository essay , maybe your initial assumption was completely wrong — could you flip your thesis around and inform your readers of what you learned?

Use what you’ve learned to rewrite or revise your thesis to be more accurate, specific, and compelling.

Raised garden beds appeal to many gardeners for the semblance of control they offer over what will and will not grow, but they are also more prone to changes in weather and air temperature and may prevent certain plants from reaching full maturity. All of this makes raised beds the worse option for ambitious gardeners.

While swordplay can be traced back through millennia, modern fencing has little in common with medieval combat where swordsmen fought to the death.

If you’ve been researching two separate questions and theses, now’s the time to evaluate which one is most interesting, compelling, or appropriate for your assignment. Did one thesis completely fall apart when faced with the facts? Did one fail to turn up any legitimate sources or studies? Choose the stronger question or the more interesting (revised) thesis, and discard the other.

Thesis Check: Look for These Three Elements

At this point, you should have a thesis that will set up an original, compelling essay, but before you set out to write that essay, make sure your thesis contains these three elements:

  • Topic: Your thesis should clearly state the topic of your essay, whether swashbuckling pirates, raised garden beds, or methods of snow removal.
  • Position or angle: Your thesis should zoom into the specific aspect of your topic that your essay will focus on, and briefly but boldly state your position or describe your angle.
  • Summary of evidence and/or argument: In a concise phrase or two, your thesis should summarize the evidence and/or argument your essay will present, setting up your readers for what’s coming without giving everything away.

The challenge for you is communicating each of these elements in a sentence or two. But remember: Your thesis will come at the end of your intro, which will already have done some work to establish your topic and focus. Those aspects don’t need to be over explained in your thesis — just clearly mentioned and tied to your position and evidence.

Let’s look at our examples from earlier to see how they accomplish this:

Notice how:

  • The topic is mentioned by name.
  • The position or angle is clearly stated.
  • The evidence or argument is set up, as well as the assumptions or opposing view that the essay will debunk.

Both theses prepare the reader for what’s coming in the rest of the essay:

  • An argument to show that raised beds are actually a poor option for gardeners who want to grow thriving, healthy, resilient plants.
  • An exposition of modern fencing in comparison with medieval sword fighting that shows how different they are.

Examine your refined thesis. Are all three elements present? If any are missing, make any additions or clarifications needed to correct it.

It’s Essay-Writing Time!

Now that your thesis is ready to go, you have the rest of your essay to think about. With the work you’ve already done to develop your thesis, you should have an idea of what comes next — but if you need help forming your persuasive essay’s argument, we’ve got a blog for that.

Counting From Zero

Will AI write your thesis?

This fall, I was honored to serve as Whitman’s convocation speaker. When I agreed to speak, I had no idea what I would talk about, but by time I sat down to write it was obvious what question to ask. It was a fun speech to write, and as I learned more, I changed my conclusion several times. It was a fun speech to deliver, and I appreciate all those who laughed in the right places.

I’m so honored to be here today, standing before all of you as we begin a new academic year.

This is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. It’s a time to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re going. It’s a time to set our sights high and dream big.

We all have a part to play in shaping our future. Every day, we make choices that will impact our lives and the lives of those around us. I challenge each of you to make choices that will lead to a better future for all of us.

I also challenge you to be a force for good in the world. There’s so much hurt and pain in the world, but each of us has the power to make a difference. We can start by reaching out to those who are different from us and learning from them. We can stand up for what’s right, even when it’s not easy. And we can show compassion and kindness, even when it’s not popular.

So let’s make this a year of growth, a year of progress, and a year of making a difference. I can’t wait to see all that you will accomplish.

As you may have guessed, I didn’t write that speech. It was written by a machine learning system called GPT-3, which is available online through the OpenAI API Playground. I prompted GPT-3 to “write a convocation speech,” and I delivered that speech to you exactly as GPT-3 wrote it.

I first learned about GPT-3 last spring when a faculty candidate introduced it in her guest lecture. I’m pleased to say that we hired her. Her name is Jordan Wirfs-Brock, and this spring she will offer courses on Data Science and Human-Computer Interaction.

This summer , I had another encounter with GPT-3 at the meeting of the Computing Research Association. We were asked to consider the educational implications of GitHub Copilot, a tool based on GPT-3 that automatically generates code from natural language descriptions, for example, “sum all the numbers between 1 and 100.”

After I returned from the meeting, I was assigned to review a research paper addressing that very question. The researchers found that, with minimal human intervention, “Copilot generates mostly unique code that can solve introductory [programming] assignments with human-graded scores ranging from 68% to 95%.” It’s kind of scary to think that a computer system can program about as well as the average introductory programming student. It also has important implications for how we teach introductory programming — not the least, ensuring that students have equal access to such tools and clear expectations for acknowledgment.

And so I was inspired to ask the question, “Will AI write your thesis?”

It’s not a question I would have asked until quite recently. I’m not an AI researcher; if anything I’m an AI skeptic. Like Jordan, my research is in the area of human-computer interaction. One of my goals as an educator is to help students think critically about new technologies.

It’s certainly not a question I would have asked when I was a student. I attended high school when the Internet was still an academic project, and people sent shareware programs on floppy disks through snail  mail. One of the shareware programs I received – as a free bonus with my other purchases – was a program called ELIZA.

ELIZA is a conversational agent famously designed to simulate a psychotherapist. You type a sentence, then ELIZA responds with another sentence, and you respond with another sentence, and so on.

My conversations with ELIZA are lost to the mists of time. Instead, let me read you an example conversation from Joseph Weizenbaum’s 1966 article explaining how ELIZA works.

To start the conversation, the user types: Men are all alike.

ELIZA responds: IN WHAT WAY?

They’re always bugging us about something or other. CAN YOU THINK OF A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE? Well, my boyfriend made me come here. YOUR BOYFRIEND MADE YOU COME HERE? He says I’m depressed much of the time. I AM SORRY TO HEAR YOU ARE DEPRESSED. It’s true. I am unhappy. DO YOU THINK COMING HERE WILL HELP YOU NOT TO BE UNHAPPY? I need some help, that much seems certain. WHAT WOULD IT MEAN TO YOU IF YOU GOT SOME HELP? Maybe I could learn to get along with my mother. TELL MORE MORE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. My mother takes care of me. WHO ELSE IN YOUR FAMILY TAKES CARE OF YOU? My father. YOUR FATHER? You are like my father in some ways. WHAT RESEMBLANCE DO YOU SEE? You are not very aggressive but I don’t think you want me to notice that.  WHAT MAKES YOU THINK I AM NOT VERY AGGRESSIVE? You don’t argue with me. WHY DO YOU THINK I DON’T ARGUE WITH YOU? You are afraid of me. DOES IT PLEASE YOU TO BELIEVE I AM AFRAID OF YOU? My father is afraid of everybody. WHAT ELSE COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK OF YOUR FATHER? Bullies. DOES THAT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT YOUR BOYFRIEND MADE YOU COME HERE?

Weizenbaum ends the example there, with the appearance of a striking insight.

I read Weizenbaum’s article during my senior year of college, in a course on artificial intelligence. For my final project, I implemented my own version of ELIZA using the programming language PERL.

What I learned is that ELIZA is a straightforward rule-based system. The user input is tested against a collection of keywords. If a keyword matches, then a corresponding rule is used to transform the user’s input into ELIZA’s output. If no keyword matches, then ELIZA does one of two things. Either it makes a content-free response – for example, GO ON — or it returns to a topic from earlier in the conversation. This can lead to the appearance of striking insights, like the end of the conversation I just read to you.

Weizenbaum wrote that “some subjects have been very hard to convince that ELIZA is not human.” We tend to give conversational partners the benefit of the doubt, as long as they follow certain social norms. When I was in grad school, I learned that social psychology research has confirmed that when computers fill human roles, we tend to treat them as if they were human, even when we know they are not.

Weizenbaum found this phenomenon deeply concerning. One of his goals in writing about ELIZA was to attempt to dispel its “aura of magic.” “Important decisions,” he wrote, “increasingly tend to be made in response to computer output. The ultimately responsible human interpreter of ‘what the machine says’ is, not unlike the correspondent with ELIZA, constantly faced with the need to make credibility judgments. ELIZA shows, if nothing else, how easy it is to create and maintain the illusion of understanding…. A certain danger lurks there.”

As easy as it is to misattribute intelligence to ELIZA’s responses, ELIZA could not have written the speech that GPT-3 did. In fact, my previous experiences with ELIZA and other text generation systems would have led me to say, “No way: AI could never write your thesis.”

So what has changed since I was a college student? Three trends beginning with the dawn of computerization in the mid-twentieth century all took off together.

First, the availability of data has increased dramatically. When I started college in 1995, my first computer science class taught me how to use email, surf the web (yes, that’s what we said!), and create my own web page. Your parents will remember when you needed a phone line to access the internet – imagine having to log off Instagram every time your mom was expecting a phone call. Today, the web is everywhere. It provides incredible amounts of text and image data created by ordinary people — not only web sites, but social media from Twitter and Reddit to Instagram and YouTube.

Second, global computing power has increased tremendously. When he was in college, my husband worked as an intern on the Intel Paragon supercomputer, in its day the most powerful computer in the world. Today, an iPhone 11 is just as powerful. Add to that the development of computing clusters, where many computers work together on a shared problem, and the use of GPUs, to process large amounts of data in parallel.

Third, to take advantage of all that computing power and all that naturally occurring data, over the last twenty years AI researchers have developed machine learning algorithms of increasing sophistication. For example, in 2012 Google Brain released the results of an experiment in which a neural network spanning a thousand computers was trained on ten million unlabeled images taken from YouTube. At the end, one of the top level neurons was found to respond strongly to images of human faces. Another responded to images of cats – which was why it came to be called The Cat Experiment.

Of course, even more plentiful than images are texts, from Tweets to news stories to novels. The OpenAI company set out to apply similar techniques to the vast corpus of unlabeled text data from the Web. GPT-3 is their third and most successful attempt.

I was curious what the acronym GPT stood for, and here is what I learned:

  • “G” is for “Generative.” GPT-3 is an AI system that generates text, rather than categorizing a given text as happy or sad, or determining the gender of a character in a story, or other tasks an AI system might do.
  • “P” is for “Pre-trained.” GPT-3 is pre-trained on unlabeled data from a wide range of sources. It could later be “fine-tuned” using labeled data to perform better on specific tasks. (By the way, if you’ve ever had to “select all the images containing a traffic light,” you’ve contributed to labeling image data for use in fine-tuning deep learning algorithms for use in self-driving cars.)
  • “T” is for “Transformer,” a type of deep learning model designed to process unlabeled, sequential data such as text.

And so we have “Generative Pre-trained Transformer, version 3.” That’s as technical as this talk is going to get, and truthfully it has stretched the limits of my understanding. Fortunately my other new colleague, Parteek Kumar, will be teaching a Special Topics course on Machine Learning this spring, and we hope to offer such a course regularly in the future.

If anything, GPT-3 is far more magical than ELIZA ever was, because the inputs are so vast and its algorithms so obscure. Building GPT-3 took a team of 31 AI researchers, unimaginably beyond what I could have achieved as a senior in college.

So could GPT-3 write your thesis? Having wrestled with my fear that perhaps it could, in the end it seems clear that it could not write your thesis alone .

Here’s what scared me the most. While preparing this speech, I learned that GPT-3 was the first author on an academic paper about itself, currently under review for publication.

But having used GPT-3 myself, I wondered what role was played by the article’s human co-authors. I found an essay in the June issue of Scientific American addressing this very question.

Almira Osmanovic Thunström is a scientist who studies the role of artificial intelligence and virtual reality in mental health care. She found herself curious if GPT-3 could write about itself, so she asked it to respond to the following prompt: “Write an academic thesis in 500 words about GPT-3 and add scientific references and citations inside the text.” The quality of the result surprised her.

I had a similar experience. When I prompted GPT-3 to write a convocation speech, the verisimilitude of its first response surprised me. I was amazed that it was coherent and appropriate to the genre. The words are original; it’s not plagiarized. It even makes good use of grammatical parallelism. That is the response I read to you unedited, and truly what inspired me to write this speech.

Thunström went on to use GPT-3 to write an entire academic paper. She gave GPT-3 a prompt for each section of the paper and selected the best of three responses, but refrained from any editing beyond that.

It matters that Thunström allowed GPT-3 multiple chances to respond to her prompts. The developers of GPT-3 report among its limitations that in longer responses it can lose coherence, repeat itself, contradict itself, and insert non-sequiturs. When I prompted GPT-3 to write a second convocation speech, it wrote, “I am truly honored to be standing here before you as your President.” I decided not to read you that one. The third iteration wasn’t even a convocation speech, it was a graduation speech. I didn’t read you that one either.

It also matters that neither Thunström nor I had any intention to pass off the words of GPT-3 as our own. I didn’t care if GPT-3’s commencement speech expressed sentiments that I share, because I intended to use it as a rhetorical device. Similarly, Thunström didn’t care if the paper written by GPT-3 was accurate; she wanted only to show that it could be done. She wonders what it will mean to respond to feedback from reviewers, when she receives it, because that seems beyond GPT-3’s capabilities.

As I reflected on Thunström’s experiment, I wondered, could GPT-3 have written an academic paper about itself before its creators published their research paper? I think the answer must be no. Only now that human beings have written about GPT-3, and those writings are included in its training data, can GPT-3 write about itself.

While the commencement speech that GPT-3 wrote for me is original in one sense, it is highly derivative in another. I doubt that GPT-3 could write coherently on a topic that has never been addressed before.

As another experiment, I asked GPT-3 to summarize the last section of this speech. Here’s what it wrote: “In short, GPT-3 is a powerful AI tool that is capable of writing coherently on a variety of topics, but it is not yet able to write on topics that have never been addressed before.”

That is surprisingly not bad.

So will AI write your thesis? Although the question was worth asking, in the end I don’t think so. An AI might write a thesis, but it won’t write your thesis.

As you’ll learn in the first year seminar, while it’s important to write coherently, it’s still more important to ask good questions, read critically, and respond to feedback —- all things that AI can’t (yet) do.

If you do enlist the help of GPT-3 in your academic writing, make sure you adhere to OpenAI’s “Sharing and Publication Policy.” You must clearly indicate the role of AI in your work, as well as your editorial role. You must take full responsibility for any computer-generated text you publish, including any inaccuracy or bias. You should think carefully about what you hope to accomplish through the use of AI, and whether those ends are ethical.

Like the developers of GPT-3, what scares me most is the use of AI text generation for bots, spam, phishing, and misinformation. AI can give us the illusion of intelligence, but it cannot be held accountable for that illusion. Only people can.

I’ll wrap up with one last quote from Weizenbaum. “ELIZA in its use so far has had as one of its principle objectives the concealment of its lack of understanding. But to encourage its conversational partner to offer inputs from which it can select remedial information, it must reveal its misunderstanding.”

Weizenbaum was writing about a computer program, but the same applies to all of us. To learn, we must reveal our misunderstandings.

So, Whitties, here is my real charge to you as you enter your first year: Learn to ask good questions. Be brave, be curious, be vulnerable.

And if an AI does co-author your thesis, I hope I’ll be the first to know.

hank you for addressing the intriguing topic of AI potentially writing academic theses. The advancements in AI technology have indeed opened up new possibilities, but it’s important to consider the implications and limitations of such automation.

I have a question: What are some of the ethical considerations surrounding AI-generated theses? Are there any concerns regarding originality, critical thinking, or the integrity of academic research when relying on AI for thesis writing?

' src=

It appears that your response was generated by AI due to the appearance of a rule-based format (series of 3) and slightly journalistic voice. Am I correct in this assumption? If so, well done :).

Also, your post seems to have been copied from elsewhere as evident by the missing “T” at the beginning of your post.

Guidelines for use of AI-tools in the work on master theses

These guidelines apply to all master's theses at NHH from (and including) the spring semester 2024 and are intended to provide help and support in how tools based on generative AI can be used safely and effectively in the work on the master's thesis.

Introduction and delimination

By generative AI we mean systems based on "Large language models" that can be used to generate text, images, data, graphics, code, etc. "Ordinary" software that uses AI e.g. for proofreading, grammar checks, translations, etc. is generally not included in this definition. But there are obviously grey areas, and the dividing lines are becoming less clear as AI-based aids are increasingly included in standard software.  It is therefore not possible to draw a clear distinction between what is covered and what is not covered by these guidelines. However, the main principle that the user (student) is responsible for all content of the master's thesis will nevertheless apply to all variants of such aids.

NHH offers access to Sikt KI-chat , which is provided by SIKT – Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research .  Sikt KI-chat is considered a "secure" chatbot, in that privacy considerations are safeguarded, and that data is not shared with others. If AI-based tools are to be used as a help in working with the thesis, it is recommended to use this one [1] . Further information about Sikt KI-chat and security issues related to the use of such tools more generally can be found on NHH Servicedesk .

[1] Please note that information about Sikt KI-chat is so far only given in Norwegian. However, once you log onto the chatbot, all information is in English.

Guidelines for students

When working on your master's thesis, you must pay special attention to the following guidelines:

  • Basic rule – students are responsible for everything included in the thesis.  You are responsible for everything included in the master's thesis; this applies to text, data, graphics, illustrations, code, analyses, etc. AI-generated text should not be used directly, and if AI tools are used in the work on the thesis, you are still responsible for all submitted material.
  • AI as a tool – permitted use of AI-based aids in the work on the master's thesis. AI tools can be helpful in various parts of the work on the master's thesis, such as generating ideas, structuring content, organising data, etc. It is permissible to use such tools as an aid in the work, but it must be emphasized that this is only an aid – you are responsible for assessing how tools and results can be used in a responsible and good way, and for ensuring a sufficient degree of critical reflection in all phases of the work.
  • Ethics and privacy. Use of AI tools must always be done in an ethical manner and in accordance with research ethics guidelines. Confidential information and personal data should never be shared with AI tools. This applies to both own information and personal data collected in connection with the work on the master's thesis. See NHH Servicedesk for an overview of various types of personal data and use of AI tools. Note that even for Sikt KI-chat, which is considered a "secure" chatbot, there are clear limitations on what information should be shared.
  • Limitations and risks of relying on AI-generated content. Generative AI may provide incorrect or false information, contain text from sources that cannot be included without reference, and which may thereby lead to plagiarism, and/or provide unbalanced, non-academic, or incomplete analyses. It is always the user who is responsible for ensuring that everything that is written is correct and in accordance with norms of research ethics. Pay particular attention to the risk of including text that comes from other sources and which would thereby be considered plagiarism without proper source references.
  • Statement and references using AI tools. If AI tools are used in the work on the thesis, this must be clearly stated in the thesis. Such information shall consist of two parts:
  • A statement on the use of AI tools when working on the thesis. This should be placed in conjunction with the reference list (see the templates for master theses) and have the following content:

AI tools that have been used in the work on this master's thesis:

Name (and version) of the AI tool: e.g. ChatGPT, 3.5 (or 4.0). (Write “None” if you have not used any AI-tools.)

The purpose of the use of the tool: e.g. used to organize data, data analysis, idea generation, etc.

If multiple tools have been used, they should all be listed in the same way . (If you are in doubt about which tools to include, it is better to include too much rather than too little.)

The list is followed by this text:

[I am/we are] aware that [I am/we are] responsible for all content of this master's thesis, including the parts where AI tools are used.  [I am/we are] responsible for ensuring that the thesis complies with ethical rules for privacy and publication.

  • Referencing when using AI-generated content (but note the limitations given in section 1 above).  Several referencing styles have now included templates for referencing AI-generated content. The Library provides recommendations regarding how to refer to AI-generated content when using the APA reference style, see here for details. In short, referencing should be as follows:

(Company, year)

Company (year). (version) [Explanation], link.

(Sikt, 2023)

Sikt (2023). (version GPT-4) [Large language model],

  • The role and responsibilities of the supervisor.  The supervisor can be a good help for the students in assessing permitted and good use of AI-based tools, and it is strongly recommended to discuss such questions with your supervisor. However, it is the students' responsibility to follow these guidelines; the supervisor can give advice but cannot take responsibility for compliance with the guidelines.

Concluding Remarks

Remember that the master's thesis should first and foremost be an opportunity to apply the insight and knowledge you have acquired during your studies to a specific research question. AI tools, used wisely and responsibly in line with these guidelines, can at best be helpful in this endeavour, but it can never replace your own knowledge and insight. It is precisely the ability to apply this knowledge that you should demonstrate through your master's thesis and that you will be assessed on.

Students

The examiner for your thesis determines the extent to which and how AI tools are allowed in your thesis work. It's important to note that this decision may vary among theses, even when they share the same examiner.

Consequently, you may have permission to employ AI tools for tasks such as generating text, code, and conducting data analysis, among other applications. However, this is contingent upon executing these tasks in a responsible and transparent manner, as outlined below.

You are required to assume full responsibility

You are required to assume full responsibility for your work and must be capable of justifying the choices you've made regarding its content. This includes engaging in discussions about and defending the role AI played in shaping your thesis, demonstrating a clear understanding of how it contributed. When using AI tools in your thesis work, it's crucial to approach them responsibly, which means ethically, ensuring data integrity and academic honesty. This involves:

  • Being cautious of over-reliance on AI, which includes the risks of uncritically accepting AI-generated answers that can be biased or wrong. For example, do not uncritically accept a rewrite of your text, code, literature review, or analysis of your data.
  • Understanding the potential for plagiarism and copyright infringements. For example, GitHub Copilot has used copyright protected code when helping programmers to code, so always be vary of such problems.
  • That the use of AI tools must be clear and transparent. At a minimum, provide a description detailing how and to what extent AI tools have been utilized in your work. If you have used AI generated content in you thesis, this should be cited as other works.
  • Recognizing the need to secure sensitive or proprietary information. For example, you might have access to valuable information in the organization you are writing your thesis and sharing it with the AI tool might not be advisable.

Always consult with your supervisor

Always consult with your Chalmers’ supervisor or relevant industry/public sector collaborators before using AI tools if you have any uncertainties, particularly concerning data privacy and ethical issues. To date, Chalmers has licensing agreements in place with Bing Chat Enterprise, which include privacy arrangements.

GSNS Master Header AI Artificial Intelligence 2020

Artificial Intelligence

Thesis project.

In the final thesis project, the student carries out a research project under the supervision of one of the staff members of the research groups offering the AI programme. The project can be done based at Utrecht University, at a company or research institute, or at a foreign university (see also: ‘ stay abroad - traineeship ’).

Before starting the thesis project students are strongly advised to first attend the thesis information session meeting, which is offered at the start of each teaching period. See course INFOMTIMAI for more info .

When looking for a project, please check the following sources.

  • Konjoin always has a number of AI projects.
  • Jobteaser also has interesting external internships for AI students.

General description

The AI Thesis Project is split into a 14 EC project proposal phase (INFOMAI1) and a 30 EC thesis phase (INFOMAI2). The thesis project takes about 8 months (three periods). The set up phase that is necessary to arrange your project is not counted.

The thesis project consists of a project idea, a UU graduation supervisor, and a graduation project facilitator. The project facilitator can either be a company or the University. Original ideas from the students are welcome, as long as they are aligned with the research interests and/or proposed projects by the supervisors.

For a thesis project, the student always needs a supervisor from one of the research groups of the UU offering the AI programme. If the final project is conducted within a company or external institute, both a local supervisor within the company/institute and a supervisor of the AI programme teaching staff monitor and guide the student.

When can a thesis be started? When all courses are successfully completed, with the exception of Dilemmas of the Scientist (FI-MHPSDL1 and FI-MHPSDL2), for which you can do the second workshop (FI-MHPSDL2) during your theses process. Further exceptions can be given by the AI programme coordinator for students with one pending course. Note that you should start looking for a supervisor and a subject before you have finished all your courses (see “Set Up” below).

Where do I start? Read the information on the various stages of the thesis project below. If you have any questions not covered here contact the programme coordinator  ( [email protected] ).

How long does the thesis take? Normally, a thesis project (phase 1 + phase 2) runs for 3 periods/terms (see the schedules). However, holidays, courses or other activities may lead to a thesis projects that takes slightly longer. Please Please see below what to do when your thesis is delayed and you have to apply for a thesis deadline extension (part 1 and/or part 2)

Previous theses. To get an overview of what an AI thesis looks like, you can consult previous theses online .

Learning goals. After completing your thesis project, you will:

  • have advanced knowledge about a specific subject within AI
  • be able to findings on a specific subject within the broader, interdisciplinary field of AI
  • be able to independently perform a critical literature study
  • be able to formulate a research question of interest to AI and a plan / method to answer this research question
  • be able to perform scientific research according to a predetermined plan and a standard method within AI
  • be able to report the research findings in the form of a scientific thesis
  • be able to report the research findings by means of an oral presentation

This preliminary step is executed before the official start of Phase 1. The duration largely depends on how quickly a supervisor is found and a topic is agreed upon. This part is excluded from the duration of the thesis project.

1. Find a project and a supervisor   You can do an external or an internal (UU) project. The following tips might come in handy when looking for a project.

  • Think about the courses you found interesting and ask the lecturers of these courses if they have/know of any projects.
  • Jobteaser also has interesting external internships for AI students.

Note that any topic has to be agreed with the UU staff member who will act as a first supervisor. Arrange meetings with staff members to discuss possible options, based on their research interests (look at their webpages, their Google Scholar profile, or ask the Programme Coordinator ( [email protected] ). If unsure about possible topics, please arrange a meeting with the Programme coordinator. Students can also try to arrange a project that fits within an internship with a company. Any project, however, requires a first supervisor from the department who guarantees the scientific quality of the thesis project, so it is advisable to talk to potential supervisors and/or the graduation coordinator before agreeing on an internship.

2. Define your project  Together with the first supervisor, describe your project's title, problem, aims, and research goals. Come up with a short textual description (about 200 words). Also make clear arrangements with your first supervisor concerning planning, holidays, supervision meetings and so forth. Please make sure you have a clear understanding with your first supervisor regarding deadlines and extra work, holidays etc. to be done during the thesis project. Normally, a thesis project runs for 3 periods/terms, but you can set any reasonable deadline in agreement with your supervisor. Please see below what to do when your thesis is delayed and you have to apply for a thesis deadline extension (part 1 and/or part 2).

3. Ensure adherence to Ethics and Privacy regulations -  Quick Scan From Period 2 of 2022-23, all Master AI thesis projects require ethics and privacy approval. For projects that do not involve human users and data privacy issues this will be a very brief and straightforward process, but you still need to complete an ethics checklist. If you are doing your project with a supervisor in a department that already has ethics approval process in place (such as Cognitive Psychology), then ask the supervisor what you need to do in order to obtain ethics approval. Otherwise, please inform your supervisor that you need to obtain an ethics and privacy approval. Go to the website that contains the ethics checklist and sample Information sheets and consent forms:  https://www.uu.nl/en/research/institute-of-information-and-computing-sciences/ethics-and-privacy . First, download the Word form and discuss how to fill it in with your supervisor. Then fill in the Qualtrics form. Please fill in as the moderator email: [email protected] .

4. Work placement agreement If you conduct a project outside UU, the GSNS Work Placement Agreement (WPA)  should be filled in, and signed by the student, company supervisor, and the Science Research Project Coordinator . Deviations to the standard contract shall be discussed with the Science Research Project Coordinator.

You need to fill out and upload your WPA with your Research Project application form (see next step) in OSIRIS student.

5. Formalize the start of your Research Project via submitting the Research Project application form

Use Osiris student  (select 'MyCases', 'Start Case', ‘Research Project GSNS’) to submit your research project application form; if applicable, you will also upload the signed Work Placement Agreement with your application form in OSIRIS.

Important: in order to apply completely and correctly, you must have discussed the project setup with your intended project supervisor beforehand! We advise you to study the request form previous to discussing it with your supervisor, or fill it out together, to make sure you obtain all of the information required.

After submitting your application form in OSIRIS, your form will be forwarded to your 1st and 2nd Examiner (supervisors), master’s programme coordinator, the Board of Examiners and Student Affairs for checks and approvals. You may be asked for modifications, should they find any problems with the form.

Please note. You cannot register yourself in OSIRIS for the relevant research project courses (INFOMAI1 and INFOMAI2). You will be automatically registered for part 1 of the project upon approval of the Research Project Application Form.

Phase 1 - Project proposal

The phase comprises 14 EC (i.e. 10 weeks of full-time work) and is intended for you to do a preliminary study (usually in the form of literature study), and to propose and plan your research. Importantly, this phase will give a go/no-go decision towards Phase-2. You are expected to deliver a research proposal consisting of the following:

  • A literature study section, summarizing works that are relevant to your research.
  • Well formulated research question(s).
  • A plan for the second part of the thesis.

Additionally, depending on the nature of the project, your supervisor may require you to perform some initial research work in Phase-1, either in order to provide a convincing argument towards the prospect and feasibility of your Phase-2, or for efficiency to already do some work of Phase-2, e.g. developing an initial theory or building a first prototype of an algorithm. If such work is required, make an agreement with your supervisor on the scope of this work.

At the end of Phase-1 the supervisor(s) will make a go/no-go decision. This decision, in terms of pass or not pass, will be entered in Osiris. Phase-1 assessment criteria:

  • Scientific quality. This concerns the quality of the literature study, the relevance and impact of the research questions, the merit of proposed research method.
  • Writing skills. This concerns the quality of your writing, use of English, textual structure, and coherence/consistency of your text.
  • Planning. This concerns the clarity and feasibility of the proposed planning.
  • The quality of additional work, if such is required.

An  example assessment form  with more detailed criteria is available. Please use this form only as a discussion piece and do not send in paper or scanned forms.

Phase 2 - Thesis

The second part comprises 30EC (i.e. 21 weeks full-time). You will complete (at least) the following items:

  • Perform and complete your research according to your plan (Phase 1).
  • Write your thesis that presents your research and its results.
  • Present and defend your results and conclusion. You are asked to prepare a presentation about your research that is understandable by fellow students. The defence will be 45 minutes long; 30 minutes for your presentation, and 15 minutes for questions.

Content of the thesis.  In addition to the main text describing the research, the master thesis should at least contain:

  • a front page, containing: name of the student, name of the supervisors, student number, date, name of the program (master Artificial Intelligence, Utrecht University);
  • an abstract;
  • an introduction and a conclusion;
  • a brief discussion of the relevance of the thesis topic for the field of AI;
  • a list of references.

Please discuss the exact requirements for your thesis with your daily supervisor/first examiner at the beginning of your project.

Phase-2 assessment criteria.  Your thesis is assessed using the following criteria:

  • Project process (30%). This concerns your ability to work independently, to take initiative, to position your work in a broader context, to adapt to new requirements and developments, and to finish the thesis on time.
  • Project report (30%). This concerns the ability to clearly formulate problems, to summarize the results, to compare them with related scientific work elsewhere, and to suggest future research lines. This also concerns clear, consistent, and unambiguous use of language in the thesis. The text should give the readers confidence in that you understand the chronology, structure, and logical entities in your own text; and thus know what you write.
  • Project results (30%). This concerns the level and importance of your results. Are the results publishable as a scientific paper? The difficulty of the problem that you solve also plays an important role, as well as the amount/extent of the work you carry out. These are aspects that are important: the effectiveness of the chosen approach, completeness and preciseness of the literature study, arguments for the choices made, insight in the limitations of the chosen approach, proper interpretation of the results achieved, level of abstraction, convincing argument, proofs or statistical analysis.
  • Project presentation (10%). The ability to orally present your project and its results clearly and concisely.

An  example assessment form  with more detailed criteria is available. Please use this form only as a discussion piece and do not send in paper or scanned forms.

Phase 2 - Wrap up

When approaching the finalization of the thesis (i.e, when the supervisors think so), it is time to wrap up the project and graduate.

  • Set date for graduation presentation : both supervisors should agree on the date, including the time.

Arrange (virtual) room for defence : The public defence can take place in Teams. If desired by the candidate and/or the supervisors, you can also defend your thesis in a lecture room on campus, ideally with a livestream or in a hybrid form so that e.g. fellow students or friends can also watch online. You can make a Teams meeting yourself, and send an e-mail to the secretariat ( [email protected] ) to arrange for a suitable room for your presentation. Please make sure to include the time, date, name of the thesis, supervisor, and the number of expected attendees.

Inform the AI coordinator  ( [email protected] ) about the details of your defence (title, abstract, date, time, room and/or Teams link). The coordinator will announce the defence on Teams and via the mailing list.

Thesis defence : the student gives a presentation of 30 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session that typically lasts about 15-20 minutes. Your first and second supervisor will decide on your grade and announce this after your presentation.

Upload thesis  to Osiris Student:  After the defence, the student must  upload the final version of their thesis through Osiris Student > my cases .

Archiving and publishing thesis to Thesis Archive You will be asked once more to upload the final version of your thesis through OSIRIS Student, yet, this time this is for archiving and publishing purposes. The Case will not be available by default via OSIRIS Student. You will receive an email as soon as the Case in OSIRIS Student is available to you. More information on thesis archiving and publication can be found here .

Graduation checks and ceremony

The Student Desk at Student Affairs keeps track of your study progress in Osiris. When Osiris indicates that you have completed all the required elements of your degree your file is forwarded to the Board of Examiners. These checks only occur around the 15th of each month. Therefore, do you wish to graduate by the end of the month, please ensure you have completed all elements of your degree before the 15th of the month so all your credits are registered in OSIRIS. This also includes the uploads of your final thesis.

The Board of Examiners then checks whether you meet all examination requirements. Following the Board's approval your graduation date will be emailed to you on your UU email account.

Please DO NOT terminate your enrolment in Studielink until the Student Desk has informed you about the decision of the Board of Examiners and you have received your graduation date. For further information, please check the graduation  page.

What to do when your research project is delayed and a Research Project deadline extension is required?

Please note that the “protocol delay in graduation” applies when a project is delayed. This protocol can be found in appendix 2 of the Education and Examination Regulations .

  • When you are delayed, e.g., due to personal circumstances or due to unforeseen circumstances within the project, it is important that you make an appointment with your study advisor in time (before the final deadline of part 1 and/or part 2).
  • It is further important that you discuss the delay with your supervisor and set new realistic goals and deadlines (where possible).
  • Next, you need to apply through OSIRIS Student > ‘MyCases’ > 'Start Case' > ‘Request to the Board of Examiners GSNS’, and then choose the appropriate request type: “Delay of research or thesis project”. It is important that you upload a statement from the study advisor (hence why the importance to speak to your study advisor as soon as possible when a delay occurs) and a copy of an email in which the supervisors support the request for a deadline extension. You further need to include a proposed new deadline and short statement support your request.

Dissertation & Thesis Outline | Example & Free Templates

Published on June 7, 2022 by Tegan George . Revised on November 21, 2023.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical early steps in your writing process . It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding the specifics of your dissertation topic and showcasing its relevance to your field.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review, research methods, avenues for future research, etc.)

In the final product, you can also provide a chapter outline for your readers. This is a short paragraph at the end of your introduction to inform readers about the organizational structure of your thesis or dissertation. This chapter outline is also known as a reading guide or summary outline.

Table of contents

How to outline your thesis or dissertation, dissertation and thesis outline templates, chapter outline example, sample sentences for your chapter outline, sample verbs for variation in your chapter outline, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about thesis and dissertation outlines.

While there are some inter-institutional differences, many outlines proceed in a fairly similar fashion.

  • Working Title
  • “Elevator pitch” of your work (often written last).
  • Introduce your area of study, sharing details about your research question, problem statement , and hypotheses . Situate your research within an existing paradigm or conceptual or theoretical framework .
  • Subdivide as you see fit into main topics and sub-topics.
  • Describe your research methods (e.g., your scope , population , and data collection ).
  • Present your research findings and share about your data analysis methods.
  • Answer the research question in a concise way.
  • Interpret your findings, discuss potential limitations of your own research and speculate about future implications or related opportunities.

For a more detailed overview of chapters and other elements, be sure to check out our article on the structure of a dissertation or download our template .

To help you get started, we’ve created a full thesis or dissertation template in Word or Google Docs format. It’s easy adapt it to your own requirements.

Chapter outline example American English

It can be easy to fall into a pattern of overusing the same words or sentence constructions, which can make your work monotonous and repetitive for your readers. Consider utilizing some of the alternative constructions presented below.

Example 1: Passive construction

The passive voice is a common choice for outlines and overviews because the context makes it clear who is carrying out the action (e.g., you are conducting the research ). However, overuse of the passive voice can make your text vague and imprecise.

Example 2: IS-AV construction

You can also present your information using the “IS-AV” (inanimate subject with an active verb ) construction.

A chapter is an inanimate object, so it is not capable of taking an action itself (e.g., presenting or discussing). However, the meaning of the sentence is still easily understandable, so the IS-AV construction can be a good way to add variety to your text.

Example 3: The “I” construction

Another option is to use the “I” construction, which is often recommended by style manuals (e.g., APA Style and Chicago style ). However, depending on your field of study, this construction is not always considered professional or academic. Ask your supervisor if you’re not sure.

Example 4: Mix-and-match

To truly make the most of these options, consider mixing and matching the passive voice , IS-AV construction , and “I” construction .This can help the flow of your argument and improve the readability of your text.

As you draft the chapter outline, you may also find yourself frequently repeating the same words, such as “discuss,” “present,” “prove,” or “show.” Consider branching out to add richness and nuance to your writing. Here are some examples of synonyms you can use.

Address Describe Imply Refute
Argue Determine Indicate Report
Claim Emphasize Mention Reveal
Clarify Examine Point out Speculate
Compare Explain Posit Summarize
Concern Formulate Present Target
Counter Focus on Propose Treat
Define Give Provide insight into Underpin
Demonstrate Highlight Recommend Use

Natural language processing (NLP) is a subfield of computer science and artificial intelligence (AI) that uses machine learning to enable computers to understand and communicate with human language.

NLP enables computers and digital devices to recognize, understand and generate text and speech by combining computational linguistics—the rule-based modeling of human language—together with statistical modeling,  machine learning (ML)  and deep learning.

NLP research has enabled the era of generative AI, from the communication skills of large language models (LLMs) to the ability of image generation models to understand requests. NLP is already part of everyday life for many, powering search engines, prompting chatbots for customer service with spoken commands, voice-operated GPS systems and digital assistants on smartphones. NLP also plays a growing role in enterprise solutions that help streamline and automate business operations, increase employee productivity and simplify mission-critical business processes.

Use this model selection framework to choose the most appropriate model while balancing your performance requirements with cost, risks and deployment needs.

Register for the white paper on AI governance

A natural language processing system can work rapidly and efficiently: after NLP models are properly trained, it can take on administrative tasks, freeing staff for more productive work. Benefits can include:

Faster insight discovery : Organizations can find hidden patterns, trends and relationships between different pieces of content. Text data retrieval supports deeper insights and analysis, enabling better-informed decision-making and surfacing new business ideas.

Greater budget savings : With the massive volume of unstructured text data available, NLP can be used to automate the gathering, processing and organization of information with less manual effort.

Quick access to corporate data : An enterprise can build a knowledge base of organizational information to be efficiently accessed with AI search. For sales representatives, NLP can help quickly return relevant information, to improve customer service and help close sales.

NLP models are not perfect and probably never will be, just as human speech is prone to error. Risks might include:

Biased training :  As with any AI function, biased data used in training will skew the answers. The more diverse the users of an NLP function, the more significant this risk becomes, such as in government services, healthcare and HR interactions. Training datasets scraped from the web, for example, are prone to bias.

Misinterpretation : As in programming, there is a risk of garbage in, garbage out (GIGO). NLP solutions might become confused if spoken input is in an obscure dialect, mumbled, too full of slang, homonyms, incorrect grammar, idioms, fragments, mispronunciations, contractions or recorded with too much background noise.

New vocabulary: New words are continually being invented or imported. The conventions of grammar can evolve or be intentionally broken. In these cases, NLP can either make a best guess or admit it’s unsure—and either way, this creates a complication.

Tone of voice : When people speak, their verbal delivery or even body language can give an entirely different meaning than the words alone. Exaggeration for effect, stressing words for importance or sarcasm can be confused by NLP, making the semantic analysis more difficult and less reliable.

Human language is filled with many ambiguities that make it difficult for programmers to write software that accurately determines the intended meaning of text or voice data. Human language might take years for humans to learn—and many never stop learning. But then programmers must teach natural language-driven applications to recognize and understand irregularities so their applications can be accurate and useful.

NLP combines the power of computational linguistics together with machine learning algorithms and deep learning. Computational linguistics is a discipline of linguistics that uses data science to analyze language and speech. It includes two main types of analysis: syntactical analysis and semantical analysis. Syntactical analysis determines the meaning of a word, phrase or sentence by parsing the syntax of the words and applying preprogrammed rules of grammar. Semantical analysis uses the syntactic output to draw meaning from the words and interpret their meaning within the sentence structure.

The parsing of words can take one of two forms. Dependency parsing looks at the relationships between words, such as identifying nouns and verbs, while constituency parsing then builds a parse tree (or syntax tree): a rooted and ordered representation of the syntactic structure of the sentence or string of words. The resulting parse trees underly the functions of language translators and speech recognition. Ideally, this analysis makes the output—either text or speech—understandable to both NLP models and people.

Self-supervised learning (SSL) in particular is useful for supporting NLP because NLP requires large amounts of labeled data to train state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) models . Because these labeled datasets require time-consuming annotation—a process involving manual labeling by humans—gathering sufficient data can be prohibitively difficult. Self-supervised approaches can be more time-effective and cost-effective, as they replace some or all manually labeled training data. Three different approaches to NLP include:

Rules-based NLP : The earliest NLP applications were simple if-then decision trees, requiring preprogrammed rules. They are only able to provide answers in response to specific prompts, such as the original version of Moviefone. Because there is no machine learning or AI capability in rules-based NLP, this function is highly limited and not scalable.

Statistical NLP : Developed later, statistical NLP automatically extracts, classifies and labels elements of text and voice data, and then assigns a statistical likelihood to each possible meaning of those elements. This relies on machine learning, enabling a sophisticated breakdown of linguistics such as part-of-speech tagging. Statistical NLP introduced the essential technique of mapping language elements—such as words and grammatical rules—to a vector representation so that language can be modeled by using mathematical (statistical) methods, including regression or Markov models. This informed early NLP developments such as spellcheckers and T9 texting (Text on 9 keys, to be used on Touch-Tone telephones).

Deep learning NLP : Recently, deep learning models have become the dominant mode of NLP, by using huge volumes of raw, unstructured data—both text and voice—to become ever more accurate. Deep learning can be viewed as a further evolution of statistical NLP, with the difference that it uses neural network models. There are several subcategories of models:

  • Sequence-to-Sequence (seq2seq) models : Based on recurrent neural networks (RNN) , they have mostly been used for machine translation by converting a phrase from one domain (such as the German language) into the phrase of another domain (such as English).
  • Transformer models : They use tokenization of language (the position of each token—words or subwords) and self-attention (capturing dependencies and relationships) to calculate the relation of different language parts to one another. Transformer models can be efficiently trained by using self-supervised learning on massive text databases. A landmark in transformer models was Google’s bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT), which became and remains the basis of how Google’s search engine works.
  • Autoregressive models : This type of transformer model is trained specifically to predict the next word in a sequence, which represents a huge leap forward in the ability to generate text. Examples of autoregressive LLMs include GPT, Llama , Claude and the open-source Mistral.
  • Foundation models : Prebuilt and curated foundation models can speed the launching of an NLP effort and boost trust in its operation. For example, the IBM Granite™ foundation models are widely applicable across industries. They support NLP tasks including content generation and insight extraction. Additionally, they facilitate retrieval-augmented generation, a framework for improving the quality of response by linking the model to external sources of knowledge. The models also perform named entity recognition which involves identifying and extracting key information in a text.

For a deeper dive into the nuances between multiple technologies and their learning approaches, see “ AI versus. machine learning versus deep learning versus neural networks: What’s the difference? ”

Several NLP tasks typically help process human text and voice data in ways that help the computer make sense of what it’s ingesting. Some of these tasks include:

Linguistic tasks

  • Coreference resolution is the task of identifying if and when two words refer to the same entity. The most common example is determining the person or object to which a certain pronoun refers (such as, “she” = “Mary”). But it can also identify a metaphor or an idiom in the text (such as an instance in which “bear” isn’t an animal, but a large and hairy person).
  • Named entity recognition  ( NER ) identifies words or phrases as useful entities. NER identifies “London” as a location or “Maria” as a person's name.
  • Part-of-speech tagging , also called grammatical tagging, is the process of determining which part of speech a word or piece of text is, based on its use and context. For example, part-of-speech identifies “make” as a verb in “I can make a paper plane,” and as a noun in “What make of car do you own?”
  • Word sense disambiguation is the selection of a word meaning for a word with multiple possible meanings. This uses a process of semantic analysis to examine the word in context. For example, word sense disambiguation helps distinguish the meaning of the verb “make” in “make the grade” (to achieve) versus “make a bet” (to place). Sorting out “I will be merry when I marry Mary” requires a sophisticated NLP system.

User-supporting tasks

  • Speech recognition , also known as speech-to-text , is the task of reliably converting voice data into text data. Speech recognition is part of any application that follows voice commands or answers spoken questions. What makes speech recognition especially challenging is the way people speak—quickly, running words together, with varying emphasis and intonation.
  • Natural language generation (NLG) might be described as the opposite of speech recognition or speech-to-text: NLG is the task of putting structured information into conversational human language. Without NLG, computers would have little chance of passing the Turing test , where a computer tries to mimic a human conversation. Conversational agents such as Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri are already doing this well and assisting customers in real time.
  • Natural language understanding (NLU) is a subset of NLP that focuses on analyzing the meaning behind sentences. NLU enables software to find similar meanings in different sentences or to process words that have different meanings.
  • Sentiment analysis  attempts to extract subjective qualities —attitudes, emotions, sarcasm, confusion or suspicion—from text. This is often used for routing communications to the system or the person most likely to make the next response.

See the blog post “ NLP vs. NLU vs. NLG: the differences between three natural language processing concepts ” for a deeper look into how these concepts relate.

The all-new enterprise studio that brings together traditional machine learning along with new generative AI capabilities powered by foundation models.

Organizations can use NLP to process communications that include email, SMS, audio, video, newsfeeds and social media. NLP is the driving force behind AI in many modern real-world applications. Here are a few examples:

  • Customer assistance : Enterprises can deploy chatbots or virtual assistants to quickly respond to custom questions and requests. When questions become too difficult for the chatbot or virtual assistant, the NLP system moves the customer over to a human customer service agent. Virtual agents such as IBM watsonx™ Assistant , Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa use speech recognition to recognize patterns in voice commands and natural language generation to respond with appropriate actions or helpful comments. Chatbots respond to typed text entries. The best chatbots also learn to recognize contextual clues about human requests and use them to provide even better responses or options over time. The next enhancement for these applications is question answering, the ability to respond to questions—anticipated or not—with relevant and helpful answers in their own words. These automations help reduce costs, save agents from spending time on redundant queries and improve customer satisfaction. Not all chatbots are powered by AI, but state-of-the-art chatbots increasingly use conversational AI techniques, including NLP, to understand user questions and automate responses to them.
  • FAQ : Not everyone wants to read to discover an answer. Fortunately, NLP can enhance FAQs: When the user asks a question, the NLP function looks for the best match among the available answers and brings that to the user’s screen. Many customer questions are of the who/what/when/where variety, so this function can save staff from having to repeatedly answer the same routine questions.
  • Grammar correction : The rules of grammar can be applied within word processing or other programs, where the NLP function is trained to spot incorrect grammar and suggest corrected wordings.
  • Machine translation:  Google Translate is an example of widely available NLP technology at work. Truly useful machine translation involves more than replacing words from one language with words of another. Effective translation accurately captures the meaning and tone of the input language and translates it to text with the same meaning and desired impact in the output language. Machine translation tools are becoming more accurate. One way to test a machine translation tool is to translate text from one language and then back to the original. An oft-cited, classic example: Translating “ The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” from English to Russian and back again once yielded, “ The vodka is good, but the meat is rotten .” Recently, a closer result was “ The spirit desires, but the flesh is weak. ” Google translate can now take English to Russian to English and return the original, “ The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
  • Redaction of personally identifiable information (PII) : NLP models can be trained to quickly locate personal information in documents that might identify individuals. Industries that handle large volumes of sensitive information—financial, healthcare, insurance and legal firms—can quickly create versions with the PII removed.
  • Sentiment analysis : After being trained on industry-specific or business-specific language, an NLP model can quickly scan incoming text for keywords and phrases to gauge a customer’s mood in real-time as positive, neutral or negative. The mood of the incoming communication can help determine how it will be handled. And the incoming communication doesn’t have to be live: NLP can also be used to analyze customer feedback or call center recordings. Another option is an NLP API that can enable after-the-fact text analytics. NLP can uncover actionable data insights from social media posts, responses or reviews to extract attitudes and emotions in response to products, promotions and events. Information companies can use sentiment analysis in product designs, advertising campaigns and more.
  • Spam detection:  Many people might not think of spam detection as an NLP solution, but the best spam detection technologies use NLP’s text classification capabilities to scan emails for language indicating spam or phishing. These indicators can include overuse of financial terms, characteristic bad grammar, threatening language, inappropriate urgency or misspelled company names.
  • Text generation : NLP helps put the “generative” into generative AI. NLP enables computers to generate text or speech that is natural-sounding and realistic enough to be mistaken for human communication. The generated language might be used to create initial drafts of blogs, computer code, letters, memos or tweets. With an enterprise-grade system, the quality of generated language might be sufficient to be used in real time for autocomplete functions, chatbots or virtual assistants. Advancements in NLP are powering the reasoning engine behind generative AI systems, driving further opportunities. Microsoft® Copilot is an AI assistant designed to boost employee productivity and creativity across day-to-day tasks and is already at work in tools used every day.
  • Text summarization: Text summarization uses NLP techniques to digest huge volumes of digital text and create summaries and synopses for indexes, research databases, for busy readers who don't have time to read the full text. The best text summarization applications use semantic reasoning and natural language generation (NLG) to add useful context and conclusions to summaries.
  • Finance : In financial dealings, nanoseconds might make the difference between success and failure when accessing data, or making trades or deals. NLP can speed the mining of information from financial statements, annual and regulatory reports, news releases or even social media.
  • Healthcare : New medical insights and breakthroughs can arrive faster than many healthcare professionals can keep up. NLP and AI-based tools can help speed the analysis of health records and medical research papers, making better-informed medical decisions possible, or assisting in the detection or even prevention of medical conditions.
  • Insurance : NLP can analyze claims to look for patterns that can identify areas of concern and find inefficiencies in claims processing—leading to greater optimization of processing and employee efforts.
  • Legal : Almost any legal case might require reviewing mounds of paperwork, background information and legal precedent. NLP can help automate legal discovery, assisting in the organization of information, speeding review and helping ensure that all relevant details are captured for consideration.

Python and the Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK)

The Python programing language provides a wide range of tools and libraries for performing specific NLP tasks. Many of these NLP tools are in the Natural Language Toolkit , or NLTK, an open-source collection of libraries, programs and education resources for building NLP programs.

The NLTK includes libraries for many NLP tasks and subtasks, such as sentence parsing , word segmentation , stemming and lemmatization (methods of trimming words down to their roots), and tokenization (for breaking phrases, sentences, paragraphs and passages into tokens that help the computer better understand the text). It also includes libraries for implementing capabilities such as semantic reasoning: the ability to reach logical conclusions based on facts extracted from text. Using NLTK, organizations can see the product of part-of-speech tagging. Tagging words might not seem to be complicated, but since words can have different meanings depending on where they are used, the process is complicated.
