The Department of Philosophy
Report a Problem
1. Fellowship Funds
It is the department’s practice that all admitted students receive two years of fellowship support. Fellowships cover living expenses, university fees, health insurance, and out-of-state tuition if needed. The first year of fellowship is taken in the first year of the program, and the second year of fellowship is normally taken in the fourth year. The university awards some multi-year fellowships to highly qualified students, and has a number of dissertation-year fellowships that are awarded on a competitive basis. Applicants and entering students should consult UCLA Graduate Division’s website on Financial Support for Entering Graduate Students .
2. Teaching Assistantships
In years when students do not receive fellowship support, they are awarded teaching assistantships which provide a salary in addition to covering university fees and health insurance. Summer teaching may also be available. If teaching performance is satisfactory and a student is maintaining normal progress in the program, it is possible to receive up to five years of TA support in the Department of Philosophy.
3. Funding for Non-Permanent-US-Resident Students
Until recently, given the constraints on funding to public universities, the UCLA Department of Philosophy has been constrained in the funding we could offer to graduate students who were not citizens or permanent residents of the US. Thanks to a new funding commitment made to our department, we can now do better. In keeping with our efforts to build a diverse community and link its discussions with a global conversation, the UCLA department intends to guarantee a minimum of six years of tuition and support at a highly competitive level to every incoming PhD student, irrespective of citizenship and residency status.
4. US Citizens and Permanent Residents not from California
Non-resident tuition fellowships are available to out-of-state US students in their first year only. Because the department will not pay more than one year of non-resident tuition for US citizens, it is extraordinarily important that all graduate students who are US citizens begin to establish “California residency for tuition purposes” before the first day of their first quarter on campus. More information can be found at the Registrar’s website, here .
5. Other Financial Assistance and Fellowship Opportunities
Both the university and extramural agencies offer various awards which are frequently obtained by our graduate students. Students are strongly encouraged to apply. Information can be found on UCLA Graduate Division’s page on Financial Support .

Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Health Sciences
UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
The PhD in Environmental Health Sciences develops in-depth skills and knowledge that enable graduates to perform independent original research on contemporary environmental and occupational health challenges. Students work with their faculty advisor to identify an area of focus, and develop an appropriate training plan and research activities. Areas of academic focus can include, but are not limited to: aerosol science, air quality, climate change, exposure science, industrial hygiene, policy analysis, epidemiology, toxicology, or water quality.
The doctoral program encompasses the following major elements:
- Course work in the major field
- Written qualifying examinations, including proposals related to the dissertation
- Oral Qualifying Examination on the proposal for the dissertation (advancement to candidacy)
- Dissertation
- Oral defense of the dissertation
1. Course Requirements
Students select a course of study upon consultation with Guidance Committee. Proficiency in biostatistics/statistics is required. Each specific required course can be waived if the equivalent has been successfully taken previously with a grade of B or better.
EHS required courses include:
- EHS C200C: Foundations of Environmental Health Sciences
- EHS 296: Research Topics in EHS required for each quarter in residence)
- EHS 411: Environmental Health Sciences Seminar: Taken once a year for two years
- One full course (4 units or more at the 100 or 200 level) in Epidemiology
- Students who have not previously completed a CEPH-accredited degree (bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree) are required to complete Public Health 201: Contemporary Health Issues.
- EHS 414A: Research Methods and Effective Communication
- EHS 414B: Research Methods and Effective Communication
2. Written Doctoral Qualifying Exam
The aim of the Written Doctoral Qualifying Examination is to verify that the candidate has state-of-the-art knowledge about the general areas of the major field (intended research and its relationships to environmental health sciences and to public health). The student must complete the minimum course requirements to the satisfaction of the Guidance Committee before taking the Examination.
3. Oral Doctoral Qualifying Exam
On successful completion of the written Qualifying Examination, the doctoral committee is named to administer the Oral Qualifying Examination. The exam focuses on the proposal for the dissertation. It also includes the following as appropriate: theory and background research relevant to the proposed research beyond that reviewed in the proposal; methodological and analytic considerations pertinent to the proposed research, irrespective of whether these issues have been covered in the proposal; and feasibility. The proposed research must make an original contribution to the field.
4. PhD Dissertation
After passing the University Oral Qualifying Examination, students may be advanced to candidacy and commence work on a dissertation in the principal field of study. The doctoral committee supervises the progress toward completion of the dissertation.
5. Final Oral Examination (Defense of Dissertation)
A final oral examination is required of all candidates.
Normative time from initial enrollment to advancement to candidacy is six to nine quarters (two to three calendar years), and from advancement to candidacy to filing of dissertation is six to nine quarters (two to three calendar years).

Please note:
This information is intended as an overview, and should be used as a guide only. Requirements, course offerings and other elements may change, and this overview may not list all details of the program.
Admission requirements listed are departmental requirements, and are in addition to the University's minimum requirements. Many programs receive more applicants than can be admitted, so meeting the minimum requirements for admission does not ensure admission. Every effort is made to ensure minimum admissions requirements are up to date - for the most up-to-date information on the University's minimum requirements, please visit the UCLA Graduate Division .

Related Programs
Law and Philosophy
UCLA School of Law and the UCLA Department of Philosophy jointly offer a J.D./Ph.D. program for exceptionally talented and committed students who hope to dedicate their careers to research and teaching in law and philosophy.
Admission is extremely competitive, and it would be highly unusual for more than one candidate to be admitted in a year. It is possible for no candidates to be admitted in an admission cycle. Before being considered for the program, applicants must first be admitted independently to UCLA Law and the UCLA Philosophy Department. Each year, the Philosophy Ph.D. program receives approximately 300 applications, and in recent years the starting class has usually numbered between five and seven students.
A good candidate for the J.D./Ph.D. program would normally have a strong undergraduate philosophy background, with demonstrated ability to produce high-quality philosophical writing. One of the most important aspects of an application is a writing sample that displays exceptional aptitude for philosophical analysis. Most applicants have had substantial undergraduate training in philosophy or related subjects such as mathematics and logic. A good candidate will also have a demonstrated interest in the intersection between law and philosophy.
Candidates for the joint degree program must:
- Apply to the university under the "J.D./Ph.D. Program" listed under Concurrent Programs on the application site.
- Apply and be admitted to UCLA Law.
- Apply and be admitted to the Philosophy Ph.D. program.
- Apply to the joint degree program by both a) indicating on the law school and Ph.D. program applications that they seek admission to the joint degree program and b) submitting with each application an essay of between two and five pages explaining their interest in law and philosophy and in the joint degree program.
- Be accepted by the Law & Philosophy Program into the joint degree.
Students already admitted into either the J.D. program or the Ph.D. program who wish to pursue the joint degree may apply to do so by completing the application steps listed above.
The J.D. normally takes three years. The Ph.D. normally takes six to seven years. Depending on their individual circumstances, some students may be able to save time on the coursework component of the program and thereby complete the joint degree program in less time than would be required to complete both degrees separately. A limited number of philosophy courses will be counted toward the J.D. requirements, and a limited number of law school courses will be counted toward the Ph.D. requirements.
The program could follow one of many paths. In the typical case, the student would be expected to focus solely on philosophy for the first year of the philosophy graduate program and solely on law for the first year of the law school program. Thereafter, the student could take courses in both schools during the same academic year. There are various ways in which the program could be structured, depending on the student’s interests and needs.
Students in the joint degree program will write a dissertation on a suitable topic related to law and philosophy.
The program aspires to enable students to graduate with a relatively minimal debt burden to permit them to teach in both humanities programs and law schools. Funding for both the Ph.D. and the J.D. involves a very generous package including grants, teaching assistantships and research assistantships, providing an unparalleled opportunity for the student dedicated to this field.

Man found guilty of murdering UCLA student inside Hancock Park furniture store
Shawn laval smith was accused of stabbing brianna kupfer 46 times in an audio-recorded attack., by helen jeong • published september 10, 2024 • updated on september 10, 2024 at 4:18 pm.
A Los Angeles jury Tuesday handed a guilty verdict to a man accused of fatally stabbing a UCLA graduate student who was working inside a Hancock Park furniture store in January 2022.
The verdict came down in less than 24 hours after jury deliberations began in the trial against Shawn Laval Smith, who was charged with murdering Brianna Kupfer after he allegedly stabbed her 46 times at the Croft House furniture store on La Brea Avenue near Beverly Boulevard.

During closing arguments Monday, the prosecution reiterated Smith’s hatred of women drove him to murder while the defense attorney claimed there was no premeditation while Smith’s defense attorney argued there was no premeditation in the killing, adding the case attracted a lot of attention because of the race.

“This man hates women,” prosecutor Habib Balian said Monday, describing how Smith visited women in several stores in Hancock Park before targeting Kupfer because she was alone. “It's easier probably to sleep at night to think something is wrong with him rather than face the truth that this man was on a crusade to hunt, to destroy and to kill for the mere fact that she was female.”
Meanwhile, the defense attorney for Smith implied race was a factor in this case by putting up Kupfer and Smith’s photos side by side, attempting to explain the media attention for the case.
“The thing we can’t talk about, the thing we consciously notice, is why it's attracted so many people,” Robert Haberer, Smith’s attorney, said.
While Smith had recorded himself saying he wanted to kill women a month before Kupfer’s death, his statements about women should not be considered motive, Haberer argued.
Smith faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
