Lesson 3 - Food Chain and Food Webs
Producer, Consumer, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary
- Re-cap questions based on previous lessons.
- Discuss what food chains are - introduce key terms for each level of the food chain.
- Explain what happens to energy as it passes down food chains
- Introduce that organisms eat more than one thing - lead into food webs. Handout
- Discuss how populations changes occur when food chains within food webs become unbalanced - relate to Lesson 2 predator -prey relationships.
- Learning check questions
- True or False? - If predator population increases, prey population will also increase.
- Name two things that can cause variation.
- Describe the main differences between the vertebrate groups amphibians and reptiles.
If you have finished, explain why you chose either True or False for Q1
- True or False? - If predator population increases, prey population will also increase - FALSE! The prey population will decrease. Why is this?
- Name two things that can cause variation - Habitat and Diet.
- Describe the main differences between the vertebrate groups amphibians and reptiles - Amphibians = Smooth moist skin, live in water and on land, breed in water. Reptiles = Dry scaly skin, live on land
Describe the stages in a food chain
Explain what happens to energy as it passes through a food chain
Describe how food chains can be put into a food web
Explain what can happen to populations in a food web when the conditions change
What do you know?
Tell your neighbour what a food chain is and what it shows.
Think about:
What type of organisms are found in a food chain?
How many organisms are involved in a food chain?
Food Chains
Show the feeding relationships between organisms, as well as the flow of energy and matter through a food chain.
Tertiary Consumer
Secondary Consumer
Primary Consumer
Usually a plant. Food chains always start with these
Usually a Herbivore
Usually a carnivore
Is this familiar from Geography?
- Describe what a food chain is
- Draw the food chain below
- Label which organisms are producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer and tertiary consumer.
- Describe what their roles are within the food chain.
Oak Tree Caterpillar Sparrow Sparrow Hawk
Describe what a food chain is - Food chains show the feeding relationships between different organisms as well as the flow of energy through a food chain.
Describe what their roles are within the food chain - Producers start the food chain and are organisms that are able to make their own food (usually plants). Primary consumers which are usually herbivores eat the Producers. Secondary consumers which are carnivores eat the Primary Consumers. Finally Secondary consumers are eaten by T ertiary consumers, which are also carnivores and normally the top predator within the food chain.
Producer Primary Consumer Secondary Consumer Tertiary Consumer
What happens to the energy in a food chain?
Producers gain energy from the sun and consumers gain energy from eating either the producers or other consumers.
However some energy is lost along the food chain...
What do you think?
Draw a mind map in your books of all the ways energy is lost along a food chain…
Think about: How much energy would the sparrow hawk receive?
Each producer is eaten by more than one organism.
Each consumer can eat a variety of other organisms and also be eaten by a variety of different organisms.
Therefore, multiple food chains can be represented in a food web.
Food webs are a network of interconnecting food chains. It shows the energy flow through part of an ecosystem .
Small changes in food webs can have a huge impact on all of the other organisms.
Using the marine food web in your handout:
- Write down each food chain you can see - how many are there in total?
- Identify which organisms would be affected if the sardines were removed from the food web.
- Explain how this might affect the population of Dolphins and Plankton.
Extension - Describe what would happen to the different populations of organisms within the food web if the fisherman was added.
- Write down each food chain you can see - how many are there in total? - 8
- Identify which organisms would be affected if the sardines were removed from the food web - Squid, Cod, Sea Bird and Dolphin.
- Explain how this might affect the population of Dolphins and Plankton - If sardines were removed, both the S quid and Cod populations will decrease, which will cause the Dolphin population to decrease as there is less food for them to eat and thrive. Removing sardines will also increase the plankton population as there are less sardines to eat them so more are able to survive and reproduce.
Micro-Algae
Learning Check:
- Describe and explain what happens to energy as it passes through a food chain.
- Describe the difference between food chains and food webs.
- Why is important to look at population changes in food webs and not just food chains?
Challenge - Scotland have introduced many new species, including beavers, back into the wild. How might introducing beavers to Scotland benefit food web populations?
- Describe and explain what happens to energy as it passes through a food chain - At each stage of a food chain, energy is lost through processes such as heat loss, movement, or matter (waste), so there is less energy at the end of the food chain than there was at the beginning.
- Describe the difference between food chains and food webs - Food chains shows the feeding relationships between specific organisms and the flow of energy within a single chain, while f ood webs shows the relationships between interconnecting food chains as well as the flow of energy through an ecosystem.
- Why is important to look at population changes in food webs and not just food chains? - Food webs show the feeding relationships between different food chains in an ecosystem that often interconnect. Therefore if the population of organisms in one stage of a food chain is affected, this could affect the populations of other organisms in multiple other food chains.

What Is a Food Chain?
A food chain shows how energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem. For example, the Sun gives energy to plants, which are then eaten by animals, such as herbivores. The energy continues to move when carnivores eat the herbivores. This is how energy is transferred between different organisms.
With this teaching presentation, students will learn what a food chain is, the organisms that make up a food chain (producers and consumers), and have a chance to test their knowledge of these concepts.
Through this activity, students will identify and describe the flow of energy in a food chain.
Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding
A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your science lessons.
In addition to whole-class lessons, use this food chain teaching presentation to enhance learning through guided science groups or remote learning assignments.
If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, check out these suggestions for keeping students on track with the concepts:
🆘 Support Struggling Students
Support students who need help understanding the concepts by providing further questioning to help students understand why certain organisms are in a specific place in a food chain.
➕ Challenge Fast Finishers
For students who need a bit of a challenge, encourage them to draw their own food chain on a piece of paper. Students can show how energy is transferred by drawing at least 4 organisms in their food chain.

A food web consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem. Each living thing in an ecosystem is part of multiple food chains. Each food chain is one possible path that energy and nutrients may take as they move through the ecosystem. All of the interconnected and overlapping food chains in an ecosystem make up a food web.
Food Chains and Food Webs. Energy Flow in Nature. Energy Roles. An organism's energy role in an ecosystem may be that of a producer, consumer, or decomposer. Eat or be eaten. 1. Producer (autotroph) can make its own food by converting the Sun's energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. Source of all food in the ecosystem.

Even people! When we put more than one food chain together, we have a food web. Each ecosystem has its own food chains and food web based upon the plants and animals that live there. From oceans to grasslands to desserts, food chains are vital to the health of those ecosystems and the environment. We like to study the pond ecosystem.
