The Pros and Cons of Hiring a Resume Writer

Thinking about hiring a professional resume writer? In this guide, we dive into where to find one — and whether it’s really worth it.

2 years ago   •   7 min read

Okay, let’s be real: Nobody actually enjoys putting together a resume. It’s stressful, time-consuming, and there’s no guarantee of a payoff at the end.

Which is exactly what makes resume writing services so tempting. After all, if you could pay a few bucks to skip the whole process and get a professional-caliber resume at the end of it, why not?

That’s exactly the question we’re about to answer — along with where to find a legitimate resume writer and what to expect if you do hire one.

Is a professional resume writer worth it?

Should I hire a resume writer? There’s no single “yes or no” answer. Like any service that costs money, whether it’s worthwhile to hire a professional resume writer comes down to what you want out of it — and what you’re willing to give up.

To help you make that decision, here are some of the benefits (and potential downsides) when considering if resume writers are worth it.

Hiring a resume writer: Pros vs Cons

The benefits of hiring a professional resume writer seem obvious on the surface — saving time and effort while getting a better-quality product at the end of it. But, as the saying goes, everything has a price … and we aren’t just talking about money.

Pro: It’s convenient

Con: It’ll cost you

Professional resume services can cost anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars . Found a cheaper alternative? “You get what you pay for” is a cliché for a reason — and in this case, it’s very true.

Pro: It lets you skip most of resume writing process

Con: You’ll need to be more involved than you think

Resume writers can’t simply build a resume from scratch. You’ll still need to provide them with information, including your job history, educational background , and accomplishments . You may also end up needing more than one resume — at least, if you’re applying for more than one job, which you probably are. That means you’ll be tailoring your own resumes anyway, or you’ll be racking up additional fees for a resume writer to do it for you.

Then there’s the initial vetting process, ongoing collaboration, feedback, and revisions. By the time it’s finished, it’s unlikely you’ll have saved much time or effort; instead, you could have simply plugged the same information into a template and saved yourself several hundred dollars.

Pro: There’s less time and effort required

Con: It isn’t an overnight process

Don’t expect a brand new resume in a matter of hours — a week or two is more realistic. Also factor in 1-2 initial phone calls (yes, calls — writing a resume takes a lot of back and forth, including information that can’t easily be conveyed over email) as well as multiple revisions. Some resume writing services may offer a quicker turnaround if you’re in a hurry, but don’t expect the rush option to come cheap.

Pro: You can look for a certified professional

Con: Not all resume writers are qualified

How do most resume writers get started? By deciding to write resumes. There are no official qualifications needed to become a resume writer, and the truth is that most resume writers don’t have backgrounds as recruiters or hiring managers.

You can look for resume writers who are affiliated with the National Resume Writers Association or who possess Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) certification, but even then, there’s no way to know exactly what you’re paying for. CPRW doesn’t require any kind of industry background to qualify — it's just a couple of short online courses and a test. No one's actually a hiring manager with experience.

Pro: A professional resume writer may do a better job

Con: … And then again, maybe not

Nobody knows your background and accomplishments better than you. Even if you supply them with detailed information, resume writers still don’t know exactly what you’ve accomplished or what skills you possess. This could mean that genuine accomplishments are left off your resume or — more likely — that others are embellished or even made up entirely. This could get you in serious trouble at the interview stage, so you’ll still need to go over the final product with a fine-tooth comb.

Keep in mind that resume writers are rarely current practitioners , and they’re even less likely to be familiar with your particular industry. This means that, even if you’re not confident in your writing abilities, you probably still have a better chance of writing a good resume than someone who’s never worked in the field. This is especially true if you work in a niche industry with its own hiring standards (like academia) or in a field that’s newer or constantly changing (like marketing, social media, or anything tech-driven).

Pro: Experienced resume writers can help if you’re not confident in your writing abilities

Con: Some hiring managers might see it as cheating

It isn’t illegal to hire a resume writer, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best idea. If your resume is written very differently to your other written communication, hiring managers may figure out that you didn’t write it yourself. Some may not care … but others will.

As a general rule, you should avoid hiring a resume writer:

  • If you’re applying for a job where communication skills are important. Recruiters will be looking at your resume as evidence of your writing skills, which means it’s probably not a good idea to outsource it.
  • For your cover letter . Even more so than a resume, your cover letter needs to be a reflection of who you are and how you communicate, so never hire someone else to write it.

Pro: It’s a good way to get started

Con: There are easier (and cheaper) alternatives

Think professional resume writers must know something you don’t? Not necessarily. Where to find a resume writer

If you’ve considered both sides and decided to hire a resume writer, here are some tips on where to start and how to make the process as smooth as possible.

  • Decide what kind of resume writing service you actually need. Do you want someone to hold your hand through the entire job application process? Figure out how to turn your duties into accomplishments? Give your existing resume a quick once-over?
  • Decide on your budget. Resume writing services aren’t cheap — but there are low-budget options available that won’t sacrifice quality.
  • Be specific. If you’re serious about hiring a professional resume writer, don’t just Google “resume writing service” and call it a day. Instead, use keywords specific to the role or industry you’re applying for.
  • Focus on finding a professional resume writer in your niche. Generalist resume writers are likely to know even less about what hiring managers are looking for than you do.
  • Choose a resume writer who’s actually worth the money. Not sure how to tell? Look for a combination of industry background, recruitment experience, and proven results.
  • Never hand over your money without knowing exactly what you’re getting in return. A good resume writer should offer to set up a call to make sure they understand your experience and professional goals — and you understand the process — before you put anything in writing.
  • Check the terms and conditions. Look specifically for things like unlimited revisions, which will prevent you from paying for something you’re not 100% happy with.
  • Don’t put too much stock in money-back guarantees. Most resume writing services will offer additional rewrites instead of an actual refund or insist on (often unreasonably) strict terms and conditions to qualify.
  • Put together as much information as you can in advance. Professional resume writers aren’t wizards — they won’t know anything about your background, experience, or accomplishments unless you tell them.
  • Consider the alternatives. There are ways of getting the same results for a fraction of the cost — or even for free!

Alternatives to hiring a resume writer

Before you go all in on hiring a resume writer, check out some of these free alternatives.

If you need help creating a resume from scratch: Download a resume template

If you’re considering splurging on a resume designer, know this: The best resume is a simple resume. Instead of paying for an expensive graphic-based resume that most hiring managers don’t want (and Applicant Tracking Systems can’t read) , download a free, ready to use ATS resume template . Simply paste in your information and start applying straight away!

If you don’t know what to write: Check out industry-specific resume examples

Once you’ve chosen your template, head over to our resume examples page, with 250+ full resume examples from dozens of industries. With just a little tweaking, you can have your resume done and ready to send off in less time than it would take to hire a resume writer.

If you’re struggling to create bullet points: Use a bullet point generator

Still stuck with a resume that reads more like a job description than a list of achievements? This bullet point builder tool can help you generate custom bullet points that focus on your actual accomplishments and give you access to suggested bullet points from similar roles.

If you want expert feedback: Use a resume checker

Not all professional advice costs money. If you already have a resume that just needs a bit of an update, upload it to Score My Resume . This AI-powered resume checker will scan your resume for the same things recruiters are looking for — relevant skills and keywords, concrete accomplishments, readability, and lack of filler. It can even analyze things like length, brevity, and word choice, giving you an easy-to-understand score along with easy ways to improve.

On the topic of relevant skills and keywords, use the skills search tool below to get a list of keywords and hard skills relevant to the job you’re applying for. It is a good way to tailor your resume to the job without needing to pay a resume writer.

If you want a professional service: Go pro

Resume Worded Pro gives you access to professional-level resume writing help, including targeted, resume-ready accomplishments and metrics, personalized additions, line-by-line analysis, and recruiter insights on your existing resume. 5 Reasons Resume Writing Services Are Worth It

3 min read · Updated on December 13, 2021

Rachel Fletcher

Looking to a professional resume writer is an investment in your career.

Your resume should not only reflect the jobs you've held throughout your career. It should also position you for the job you aspire to have — the next step up in your career. When a new job means new career possibilities, there's a lot at stake in your job search: opportunities for career growth, an expanded network, an increase in quality of life, and even a salary increase.

With all of this on the line, it's important that you maximize every aspect of your job application, especially your resume. And when there are professionals who can improve this essential document for you, why wouldn't you take advantage? Here are five reasons the investment of a professionally written resume is worth it.

1. Longevity

In the same way you'd spend more on a good coat or well-made pair of shoes to last you a lifetime, your resume will serve you for the rest of your career. A great foundation set by a professional resume writer will need only minor updates from time to time.

2. Humility

Bragging is hard — and it's harder for women especially — but a professional resume rewrite will be sure to make your most relevant and sparkling achievements shine through. If tooting your own horn is something you struggle with, having someone else do it on your behalf will be exponentially more effective.

3. Preparation

Professional resume writers are trained to anticipate the questions recruiters and hiring managers will have throughout the application process; your writer will help you identify the answers when they work them into your final product. In this sense, you'll get more than a resume from your rewrite — you'll receive valuable coaching that will set you up for success in interviewing. When a professional writer shows you the best version of your career story on your resume, you'll have a better understanding of your strengths that will help you shine in the interview room.

Whether you're currently employed or job searching full time, you need the time you do have now to invest in networking, applying, and preparing for interviews. When you work with TopResume, you only have to fill out a brief questionnaire and you'll have a finished resume in about a week's time. If you've been in the job search recently, you'll know one-week turnaround times for anything are pretty much unheard of. Plus, think of all you can accomplish when you can take this demanding task off your plate.

5. Expertise

We know that practice makes perfect. With any luck, you'll only have to update your resume a handful of times throughout the course of your life. If that's the case, how can you be great at something you've barely had any experience doing? On the flipside, a professional resume writer has written dozens, if not hundreds of resumes and can help you avoid all the common mistakes that come with trying to do it on your own.

A professional resume rewrite is an investment in your career. Learn more about TopResume's resume-writing services .

Are Professional Resume Writers Worth It?

Great professional resume writers do more than just write resumes! Investing in a top resume writing service can help you build a powerful personal brand.

Why should I invest in a professional resume writer?

I've been writing resumes for over a decade and I've honestly never seen a job market quite as competitive as the one we are facing in 2024. When answering the question, "Is it worth it to hire a professional resume writer?" it's critical to understand the difference between a resume writing service that just reformats your documents and a personal branding expert who helps you clearly and confidently articulate your value and fit for the role.

In this article, I'll help you understand how and when to use online templates and AI-enabled resources, as well as how to best marry the expertise of an expert professional resume writer with 2024 technology.

We'll explore the benefits of hiring a professional resume writer and whether it's worth the investment for your career.

Why Is a Professional Resume Important?

Your resume is more than just your first impression to a potential hiring manager. When done right, resumes are an extension of your personal brand . Your resume not only gives you confidence, it also serves as a guide for interviews, prompting hiring managers to ask questions about the achievements and expertise that you're most proud of.

Professional resume writers can help you unlock your value and get super clear on the problems you solve, as well as the unique combination of skills and experience that shape your personal brand.

Resume Writers Offer Unique Expertise in Navigating the Current Job Market

In today's job market, there are several factors contributing to an overwhelming volume of applications for every job.

First and foremost, there's a really low barrier to entry on most job sites. Technology has streamlined the application process, making it really easy to apply for jobs. This is great from a candidate experience perspective, but it also makes it easier for candidates to apply for dozens of jobs without really giving a lot of thought to qualifications.

From a hiring manager's perspective, this creates a lot of noise that they then must sift through. So, even if you are qualified and have taken the time to customize your materials to demonstrate that, recruiters have to go through a lot to get to you!

There is also the impact of technology, from ChatGPT and other AI-enabled workflow automations to systems and platforms that enable corporations to streamline and take out waste in nearly every process.

And finally, the Baby Boomer generation was massive. Their workforce expanded to accommodate that and we are still seeing the impact of streamlining and rightsizing as they retire.

Because of this and many other Future of Work factors, the workforce has become increasingly specialized. It's not enough, for example, to be a skilled marketing manager. Companies are looking for Digital Marketing Managers with 5+ years of experience in Marketo or Pardot. That applies across industries, functions, and levels.

A professional resume writer has the expertise to craft a resume that highlights your unique skills and experiences, making you stand out from the crowd. A great resume writer will partner with you to identify what your differentiated value is and the best way to showcase that.

Delegating is a Higher Order Skill

A professional resume writer is great at writing resumes. It is, quite literally, their job! You haven't made it as far as you have in your career by trying to do everything. In fact, quite the opposite! The most successful leaders I know are in their positions because they hire great people and give them the support and guidance they need to be successful.

The old adage that you never want to be the smartest in the room comes in here as well. You don't need to be great at everything! In fact, taking out tasks that you're not naturally exceptional at allows you to do what you do best.

A Great Resume Gives You Confidence

One of the most important jobs of a professionally written resume is not what you might think!

A great resume holds up an objective mirror and helps you both understand and more clearly articulate how you show up. When you work with a branding expert like myself instead of entering your information into a chatbot, you're really partnering with someone to help define and shape your personal brand narrative.

You are an expert in you. Which often means that you take your unique combination of skills and experience for granted. No one has quite the same "recipe" and no one does your job exactly the way you do it.

What inexperienced resume writers or AI do is to cover all of that uniqueness with buzzwords and keyword strings. While it can be helpful to use gen AI as a starting point for resume development, what

How Can a Professional Resume Writer Help?

A professional resume writer can provide a range of services to help you create a standout resume. Here are some of the ways they can assist you:

Personalized Consultation

by Julia Taubitz (https://unsplash.com/@schwarzeweissheitenfotografie)

A professional resume writer will typically start by conducting a personalized consultation with you. This can be done in person, over the phone, or through video conferencing.

During this consultation, they will ask you about your career goals, work experience, and any specific skills or achievements you want to highlight. This information will help them create a resume that accurately reflects your unique qualifications.

Customized Resume Writing

Based on the information gathered during the consultation, a professional resume writer will create a customized resume that highlights your skills and experience in a way that is tailored to your industry and job goals.

They will also ensure that your resume is free of any spelling or grammatical errors and follows the latest resume formatting trends.

Cover Letter Writing

In addition to your resume, a professional resume writer can also assist with writing a cover letter. This is a crucial document that accompanies your resume and allows you to expand on your qualifications and explain why you're the best fit for the job.

A well-written cover letter can make a strong first impression and increase your chances of getting an interview.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization

In today's digital age, having a strong online presence is essential for job seekers. A professional resume writer can also help optimize your LinkedIn profile to make it more attractive to potential employers.

They will ensure that your profile is complete, includes relevant keywords, and showcases your skills and experience in a professional manner.

Real-Life Examples of Professional Resume Writing Success

Many job seekers have seen success after hiring a professional resume writer. Here are a few real-life examples:

Professional Resume Writing for a Career Changer in Morristown

A client of mine in NJ had stayed home with her kids for eight years. She came to me when she was ready to return to work. We crafted a compelling story that showcased not only her impressive career prior to exiting the workforce, but all of the volunteer work she remained engaged while raising her family. We also worked on some story coaching to help her navigate the interview, including practicing STAR stories and nailing her elevator pitch. She was hired within 2 months - at a salary higher than her prior salary 8 years ago - with a flexible, work-from-home schedule that works with her family needs.

Professional Resume Writing for a Transitioning Teacher in Orange County

Another client of mine, located in the Orange County area was burnt out from a career in teaching. While it was very much her dream job at one time, the demanding schedule and constantly changing directives from administration were wearing her thin. We worked together to create a resume showcasing her readily transferable sales and relationship building skills to position her for a transition into sales. Within 3 weeks, she had multiple interviews for sales and account management roles in ed tech, the wine and spirits industry, and others.

Is It Worth the Investment?

The cost of hiring a professional resume writer can vary greatly depending on several factors. Let's dig in to what you're really paying for.

First, time. A great resume can take hours to write. I spend sometimes upwards of 10 to 12 hours on a leadership resume. With a masters degree in English, over a decade of resume writing experience, 10+ years of corporate marketing experience, and multiple certifications, you are paying for my time and expertise. The investment into a professional resume writer is akin to an investment into another type of professional service provider. What I do is more coaching and strategy than purely document editing.

If you see a provider offering to do this type of work for a $100 or $200, they are not performing the same level of quality, time-intensive, and strategic work. The economics simply don't make sense.

Large resume writing companies are profitable in one of a few ways.

One is volume and speed. They churn out lots of documents. If you want to be part of that mill, expect a more generic and "fluffy" final product.

Another is margin. They pay their writers a small portion of the fee you are charged. All subcontractor relationships work this way to a certain extent, but when the starting fee is $179 and the writer is getting 30%, you're talking getting a resume (something designed to help you land a job that pays your bills) for less than dinner at a pizza place.

Finally, in today's landscape, many resume writers are fully automating the production of resumes using AI. You're not even getting a human being to work on it.

Low cost services typically make you fill out a worksheet, don't connect with you over the phone, or only do so for a few minutes at a time. You will likely be very limited in terms of timing of revisions as well. Very often, you can only make minor edits, which have to be request by email and within a few days of the first draft.

How to Choose the Right Professional Resume Writer

When choosing a professional resume writer, it's essential to do your research and find someone who is experienced and reputable. Here are some tips for finding the right resume writer for you:

Look for Reviews and Recommendations

Reviews and recommendations are great, but it's not enough to just have reviews anymore. Review services (those that leave fake reviews across Google, Yelp, and other platforms) are prolific in today's ecommerce landscape.

I personally have people offering these services reach out to me weekly. When you are reading a review, it's so important to critically assess what they are reviewing and if it feels authentic.

Very often, fake reviews are easy to detect if you read. They are generic - like "it was a great experience and I am very pleased with the result". They won't go into detail around what made the experience unique, or point out specific results, the way my reviews or those written by actual customers for other great services do.

Review Their Portfolio

Most professional resume writers will have a portfolio of their work available for potential clients to review. Take a look at their past resumes to see if their writing style and formatting align with your preferences.

Beyond that, however, try to ascertain why they made certain formatting choices and if the formats are targeted to differentiated outcomes.

Creative fields should have a different look and feel than a CFO resume, for example. Similarly, an early career professional and a parent returning to the workforce will have different career challenges to overcome. The resume format should be carefully crafted to address and overcome those.

Ask About Their Process

Take the time to get really clear on the process a resume writer uses to craft your document. My process is extremely consultative and collaborative. Many online services offer very limited contact with the writer - often limited to email or a brief phone call.

This is an issue because the person is going to have to make a lot of estimations and educated guesses around your experience. It is frustrating to have to try and explain in writing what you have done for the past 20 years, especially when you're paying someone to write about it for you.

I've rewritten hundreds (yes multiple zeros) of resumes that were done previously by low cost, high-volume online services. They are very often filled with mistakes and incredibly generic.

If you simply cannot afford to invest in a premium service that will take the time to collaborate with, ask if the writer offers resume reviews (less writing, more guidance and collaborative writing). If not, you are often better off using an AI resume service that will produce a document equal in caliber to that of an inexperienced offshore writer making $45 on the project.

In today's competitive job market, a professional resume writer can help you transform your resume into a lackluster document that reads like a job description into a high-impact marketing document that showcases your unique value proposition and personal brand.

I've helped thousands of jobseekers not only get clear on their value, but identify and articulate what ideal work looks like for them, then navigate their way towards that.

Developing a compelling personal brand does more than help you get hired. It helps you build a recession-proof career strategy that sustains through market cycles.

What You Need to Know Before You Pay Someone to Help With Your Resume

person on the phone while looking at computer

Writing a strong resume is important, but it’s also hard. You might have heard that some people hire a resume writer, or maybe you’ve seen ads for resume writing services promising a free professional review of your resume. It’s tempting—especially if you’re desperate for a new job or your search has dragged on for a while.

Is it a good idea to have your resume written by a professional? The short answer is yes, it can definitely be beneficial to your job search.

Before you spend your money, however, there are a few things you should know—including what exactly a resume writer or reviewer does, how to decide if you should hire one, and, if you decide to go for it, how to do your homework and pick the right one for you.

What a Resume Writer and/or Reviewer Does

First, you need to make sure you understand what a resume writer or reviewer can—and can’t—do for you. If you don’t have the right expectations going into the process, you’re likely to be disappointed.

What’s the Difference Between Resume Writing and Resume Reviewing?

As you look to hire a professional to help with your resume, you’ll come across the terms “resume writing” and “resume reviewing” and it’s important to understand the range of things these terms can mean. They’re almost—but not quite—interchangeable.

Most services and individuals offering “resume writing” will not actually create an entirely new resume for you from nothing. Instead, resume writing means rewriting , says Muse career coach Jennifer Smith , founder of Flourish Careers , who in addition to writing resumes, read them for over 15 years as a recruiter and HR professional. “I require something that we can build from, to understand their experiences and key accomplishments,” Smith says.

Most resume writers will want to see your existing resume, and they’ll usually need you to fill out a questionnaire or worksheet or have a long conversation with them about your experience and goals—most commonly, you’ll need to do a combination of these things.

Some individuals and services, like The Muse’s own Coach Connect —a marketplace where you can book sessions with thoroughly vetted career coaches—call this same service a “ resume review .” At The Muse, the intention is to avoid the perception that you’ll be getting a resume written from scratch, says Eloise Eonnet , Coach Connect Manager and a coach herself who specializes in interviewing and communication.

However, in its lightest (and cheapest) form, resume reviewing can mean a professional looking over your resume and providing some actionable advice for you to make updates yourself, Smith says. This is often what you’re getting if you sign up for a free resume review. Tread lightly here since the advice may not be personalized to you: I, a content editor and writer, once submitted my resume to the same free resume review service as my mother, a nurse, and we got nearly identical feedback despite our extremely different goals and industries.

You might also choose to work with a coach who reviews the resume you’ve written, shares advice on how to improve it, and then gives you feedback on the changes you make, says Dana Hundley, a resume writer, former recruiter, and founder of Career Cooperative . This kind of service will probably do the most to help you learn how to write better resumes yourself in the future.

What Can a Resume Writer Do for my Resume?

Your resume is a story about why you’re the right person for a given job. Experienced resume writers are adept at asking the right questions to pull out the most relevant information about you and packaging it in a way that tells an engaging and persuasive story, Smith says.

There are also some common errors that (good) resume writers won’t make or will catch, including bullet points that list responsibilities rather than achievements and a lack of consistency throughout the resume (usually because people are just adding recent jobs onto old resumes without making sure everything tells a coherent story and is formatted the same way).

When she was a recruiter, Smith also noticed candidates who would try to stand out using flashy design—including a resume that used so much bright green that she literally jumped back from the screen (and then struggled to read the document). A good resume writer will help your resume stand out the right way.

You can definitely do all these things for yourself, but if you’re overwhelmed, stuck, or don’t have the time or energy to immerse yourself in the nuances of resume best practices, a professional might be the right choice.

Do I Still Need to Be Involved in the Resume Writing Process?

Hiring a resume writer doesn’t mean that you’ll magically receive a perfect resume without any thought or work on your part. “If you want to do it right, it should be a partnership,” Smith says. This means the writer is learning about you and your professional history, listening to what you want from your resume and your next job, and getting input from you throughout the drafting and revising process. This also means you’re putting the effort in to share all the relevant information needed to make your resume the best it can be.

Once It’s Done, Can I Submit the Same Resume for Every Job I Apply To?

Whether or not you work with a professional, it’s an absolute must to tailor your resume  for every position you apply to. This means making changes to emphasize the most relevant experience, skills, and achievements for each role as well as switching up language to make sure you’re including the right keywords from the job description.

A resume writer should gear their work toward the types of jobs you plan to apply to, so a professionally written base resume should already showcase most of your most relevant experience. But every job is a little different and you should expect to make tweaks. Perhaps a certain company is looking for someone with knowledge of uncommon software that you happen to have experience with, but it’s not on your base resume because most companies don’t use it. Adding the name of that software to your professionally written resume could be what lands you the interview.

If you’re applying to more than one type of job—let’s say, for instance, you’ve worked in both marketing and development and are applying to roles in both—you might have to make more changes for different applications, or you might consider working with a professional on two (or more) base versions of your resume.

Will a Resume Writer Design My Resume?

Resume writers often will format your resume, but if you’re looking for someone to make a heavily designed resume, it’s not a given. And that’s probably a good thing. Applicant tracking systems (ATSs)—the programs that many companies use to process and organize resumes—can’t always parse fancy formatting. So a good resume writer will make sure your resume has clean, simple formatting an ATS can read. Muse coaches, for example, typically focus “not on the fancy details, but what is going to help you get through [the ATS] and land that interview,” Eonnet says.

Resume formatting is also about appealing to the human reader. As former recruiters, both Smith and Hundley make sure the resumes they write are easily scanned and understood by someone who might have a lot of applications to go through in a short time.

If you re looking for a heavily designed resume, you should be up front about that expectation and prepared for the possibility that you’ll need to pay more or even hire someone separately.

Is Hiring a Resume Writer “Cheating”?

If you’re considering hiring a resume writer, but are concerned that it feels dishonest or is “cheating,” worry no more. Unless you’re applying to be a resume writer yourself, your resume isn’t meant to be a sample of your work, but rather an accurate reflection of your qualifications for a job. As long as what’s written on your resume is true, there’s nothing dishonest about it.

If a resume had the information she was looking for, Smith says, she didn’t really care if a resume was professionally written. In fact, neither Hundley nor Smith usually noticed if a candidate had hired someone else to write their resume.

How to Decide If You Should Hire Professional Help for Your Resume

Almost anyone can benefit from a resume writer, but working with one can be especially productive in some scenarios. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide whether to write your own resume , hire a professional, or even seek out an entirely different kind of  career coaching .

Do You Know What Your Job Search Goals Are?

Effective resumes are “a combination of your goals and your history. If you don’t have the goals piece, that makes the resume a lot less effective,” Smith says.

At its core, “your resume is a marketing tool” that’s selling you as the right person for the job, Smith says. If you were marketing a new product, you’d want to know who your customer is; if you’re writing a resume, you want to know who your target audience is. There is no single ideal resume for each person based only on their history. The best resume for a candidate looking to land a digital marketing coordinator job is different from the best resume for that same candidate to get a sales development role or even a social media coordinator role. Different experiences, achievements, and skills matter for different jobs—your resume needs to reflect the ones that matter for the jobs you’re applying to.

So if you’re not sure what type of positions you’re going to apply to, a resume writer can’t deliver a good product and it’s a waste of everyone’s time and your money to make them try.

“Sometimes people come to me and say that they need a resume, but that’s not really what they need,” Smith says. They don’t really know what they want next, but they think they need a resume to start. People tend to want to pay for tangible things like a resume even when what they actually is need someone to help them figure out their goals, Eonnet says.

If this is you, and you’re unsure of what job you want next, you might want to start with a different kind of coaching before you look for someone to write your resume. For a potential client in this position, for example, Eonnet would recommend checking out Coach Connect’s “ Stuck in a Rut ” package over its resume review service.

Does Your Job Search Situation Fall Into One of These Trickier Categories?

There are a few situations where hiring a resume writer might be particularly helpful. If you fall into one of these categories, your resume may be a bit more difficult (though not impossible) to write on your own:

  • You’re making a career change
  • You haven’t applied for a job or updated your resume in a long time
  • Your career history is extensive and you need help narrowing it down
  • You’re going back to work after a long employment gap
  • You’ve had a bunch of jobs and/or side gigs that might look unrelated
  • You’re a freelancer looking for a full-time job
  • You’re in a niche market or transitioning out of one (such as government, the military, or academia)
  • You don’t have the time needed to create a high-quality resume
  • You’re not a strong writer and need help clearly stating your achievements
  • Your job search has gone on for a while with little success

Do You Need Motivation or Help Overcoming a Mental Block?

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard people I know say, “I just need to update my resume, then I can start looking for a new job,” and stay stuck in that stage for weeks or even months. When your resume becomes a barrier preventing you from making progress in your job search, you should consider bringing in a professional, Hundley says. “If it feels too big, too daunting, too confusing, seeking support to create the best possible resume for yourself so you can...focus your energy on other aspects of a job search is a great option.”

Resume writers can also help motivate you, especially if you’re feeling deflated from a job hunt—with all its rejections and radio silences. Often “I look at a draft of someone’s resume and see how amazing they are and then get on the phone and they’re down on themselves,” Smith says. But she’s heard from clients that even the act of filling out her intake questionnaire helps them start to process their background in a new way, see what makes them qualified, get out of their own heads, and feel prepared to talk themselves up.

How to Pick the Right Resume Writer

If you’ve decided you want to hire someone, you’ll quickly realize that “there are thousands and thousands of coaches out in the world who say they can help you with a resume,” Eonnet says. While many of these coaches are legitimate, not all of them are going to be a fit for you. Here are some questions to ask yourself to make sure you find a resume writer or service who will give you the biggest leg up on your job search.

Is the Resume Writer or Service Reputable?

Before selecting a resume service or writer, you want to make sure that your choice is qualified and that you’ll get the product they’re promising. “There’s not a one-size-fits-all in terms of what makes a successful, impactful resume writer,” Hundley says. But there are a few ways to try to assess your options.

  • Look at reviews —both on their own website and third-party sites. If the coach you’re considering is on Coach Connect, you can be sure that the reviews listed on their profile are all in order and the “featured testimonial” is always the most recent review. Negative reviews are not deleted or altered, and positive reviews aren’t promoted to the top, Eonnet says.
  • Check for certifications. They’re a sign that a resume writer or coach is qualified—but not the only one. The Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches and the National Resume Writers’ Association are the two main sources of resume writing certifications in the U.S. and you can be sure that folks with these certs are qualified. But not having one of these doesn’t mean someone’s not qualified, so make sure to take all of their experience into account. A recruiting and/or HR background, especially in your desired industry, is one other thing to look for along with or in lieu of a certification.
  • Understand the criteria. If you’re looking at resume services with a lot of writers, you might want to find out what standards and vetting processes they have in place. The service’s website might include this info or you could ask for it directly before agreeing to use them.
  • Ask for referrals and recommendations from your network. That way you know that someone you trust was happy with the work the resume writer did.

Are There Red Flags?

Here are a few red flags to watch out for from resume writers or services. Most aren’t definite dealbreakers, but might be a signal to dig deeper or consider looking elsewhere:

  • Job guarantees: Some resume services will guarantee that you’ll get a job in a certain number of days or your money back. Be wary—there’s likely fine print with some extreme qualifications you need to meet to be eligible. Plus, no one can realistically guarantee that you’ll get a job based on your resume alone, no matter how fantastic it is. Landing a job depends on so many factors—including the job market, the number of jobs you apply to, your experience, your performance in interviews, and the speed of the hiring process where you’re applying.
  • Extreme prices: If a service is free or less than $100, make sure you know exactly what you’re getting for your money. At prices that low, you might not be getting personalized advice or your information could be sold to third parties for advertising purposes. On the flip side, if a resume writer is charging in the high triple digits or more for just a resume (and you’re not a C-suite executive), make sure they have the experience and results to justify it or skip straight to cheaper options.
  • Lack of transparency: Before paying for anything, you want to know what you’re getting, right? A service or writer should be up front about their prices and process, including how many rounds of edits you get and what type of file your resume will be delivered in.
  • A final result you can’t easily edit: You still need to tailor your professionally written resume for each job you apply to, so your resume should be “very nimble,” Hundley says. If a service is going to deliver an end product in a file format you can’t edit (such as an image file or a file you need special software to open) or is so heavily designed that changing up the text will mess up the formatting, look elsewhere. Note: It’s fairly common (and not a red flag) to receive a PDF and an editable document.
  • Generic advice or lack of input needed from you: If you’ve already submitted your resume for a review, and it’s clear from the results that whoever wrote the feedback didn’t read your resume, tread very carefully before giving the service more money. Or if a resume service doesn’t ask for more information about what kinds of jobs you’re looking for or anything else about your experience, consider whether your money is better spent on something more personalized.

What’s Your Timeline?

You should have an idea of when you need your resume to make sure that the resume writer you choose is able to deliver on time. If you want to start your job search “soon,” spending a few weeks on your resume might be fine, but if you spotted a perfect job you want to apply right away before the posting comes down, you might need it in a few days—in which case you need to make sure the resume writer can meet your deadline (and you should be willing to pay extra for a rush job, Hundley says).

What’s Your Budget?

Resume review and writing services can range in price from free to thousands. Typically, you should expect to pay at least one hundred to a few hundred dollars for a professional to rewrite or revise your resume, Smith says. Folks far along in their careers, especially at the executive level, tend to have to pay more than early-career job seekers.

Different writers and services might have different resume packages that include more revisions, more time to talk with the writer about your job search goals and resume strategy, or even additional coaching products—and prices will range accordingly. So think about what you can afford. If you don’t have a lot to spend, it might make more sense to get a lighter resume review from an experienced resume writer who’s a good match for you rather than a full rewrite from a service where you’re not quite sure who’s writing your resume or what quality the end product will be.

What Is Your Ideal Process?

As mentioned earlier, every resume writer and reviewer needs some amount of input from you. But the amount and type of involvement you have in the process can vary. Do you want some tips on your resume that you can use to update it yourself? Do you want the writer to handle the writing and go back and forth with several rounds of revisions to make sure it’s exactly how you’d like it? Do you prefer to talk about yourself over the phone or will filling out questionnaires allow you to organize your thoughts better?

Think this through before you look for resume writers and be prepared to ask probing questions about their writing or review process to make sure it lines up with your expectations and needs, Hundley says. If one resume writer isn’t offering what you’d like, move on to another.

Do They Have Experience Helping People in Your Role, Industry, and Situation?

While looking for writers, see what industries, careers, and situations they have experience with to ensure they have a track record of helping people like you. A coach who has a background in the industry you’re looking for work in is especially helpful because they “can speak the language,” Smith says. If you have to choose, it’s typically better to find someone who’s familiar with where you’re going in your career, Smith says, than someone who’s familiar with where you’ve been. One exception is when you’re transitioning out of the military since translating that experience can be a unique skill.

Even if you’re using a larger resume service, you can see if it has a way for you to work with a writer who has the experience you need. For example, Coach Connect allows you to filter for careers, experience levels (both yours and the coach’s), and other areas of expertise—for instance, working with veterans, career changers, or international job seekers. And if you’re still struggling, some services, including Coach Connect, allow you to reach out for help finding a match.

Is Their Personality and Style a Good Match for You?

Before you make a final choice, try to get a sense of who the writer is beyond their experience. Read anything they’ve written on their website, LinkedIn, social media, and various professional profiles (on The Muse’s Coach Connect, at least, each coach writes their own bio). Pay attention to both tone and content. Are they warm and bubbly or no-nonsense and to-the-point? Neither is good or bad per se, but you might prefer one over the other.

Look at reviews and testimonials and watch for any common themes. Do multiple clients say that they’re a good listener? Or that they infused some humor into the process? You can also use a free initial phone consultation or any pre-hire conversations with the writer to get a sense of how they communicate and if they’re a good fit for you.

You likely work better with some colleagues than others because of their personalities and work styles. A resume writer is no different. You’ll get your best possible resume from someone you gel with.

are professional resume writers worth it reddit

Is it worth hiring a resume writer?

Professional resume writers are trained to combine compelling language with marketing techniques to help job hunters sell their skills and expertise to hiring managers. A resume writer could help you with your job search by properly highlighting your qualifications with creative formatting, style, and content choices that attract the right attention. But is it a good idea to work with one?

What is a resume writer?

A resume writer uses their writing skills to frame your professional experience and accomplishments in a way that highlights what you can offer employers. These professionals are often current on industry standards and trends and can help you craft your resume to reflect those things.

Is it similar to a resume reviewer and a career coach?

A resume writer is not the same as a resume reviewer or career coach.

Instead of gathering information about you and your professional background to write a new resume, a resume reviewer simply looks at your existing document and offers tips on how to improve it. Similarly, a career coach gives advice and actionable steps for all aspects of your career, including networking, interviewing, and career development.

Note that some professionals offer resume review, career coaching, and resume writing services as a package deal.

When it could be helpful to hire a resume writer

Hiring a professional resume writer might be beneficial in some cases. For example, if you haven’t applied for a job in a long time, you may not have updated your resume. Because resume articles don’t always keep up with the latest trends, you may not be familiar with the best formatting or style or what sections to include or omit.

Moreover, if you have a long-running career or a varied work history spanning many years, a resume writer can assist you in determining what to include so your resume is concise and relevant.

You might also have many seemingly unrelated past jobs, which can make your career path look disjointed — career changers often face a similar dilemma. A resume writer can help you tie unrelated experiences together and present a coherent set of transferable skills and qualifications.

Finally, a resume writer can be particularly helpful if your job search hasn’t yielded the results you hoped it would. These professionals have studied and created many successful resume and cover letter examples and can help you craft one that gets your application noticed.

Expert tip:

If hiring a resume writer is cost-prohibitive for you, consider using a professional resume template or example as a starting point instead. That way, you’ll be able to get a sense of the layout, content, and tone you should employ.

The pros of hiring a resume writer

The decision to hire a resume writer deserves careful consideration. Here are some ways doing so can be helpful to job hunters.

Tailored service

Unlike the resume or cover letter templates you might buy or use online, a resume writer will focus solely on your unique experiences and needs. They’ll tailor your resume to fit the norms and trends in your industry and provide a customized document that showcases your true value.

Expertise and experience

It can be challenging to communicate your skills and strengths effectively if you aren’t a gifted writer. Resume writers have extensive expertise with written communication and know how to advertise your skills well. Some are even accredited or boast industry certifications.

Professional designs and layouts

Resume writers know what hiring managers want and what grabs their attention. Consequently, they can format your resume to adhere to industry norms and effectively communicate your skills. They can also provide creative resume examples and designs that make your resume stand out.

Convenience

It’s not always easy to know what sections to include in your resume, how to format it, and what constitutes professional language. Hiring a resume writer can save you time and mental energy by letting someone else worry about it.

Simply summarize your work history, accomplishments, skills, and traits to your resume writer, and they’ll put the document together on your behalf.

ATS-friendly

Resume writers understand how modern applicant-tracking systems work. They’ll be familiar with the popular keywords in your industry and make sure they appear strategically in your resume and cover letter so ATS systems will pick up on your relevant experience.

A resume writer will also know how to ensure that your layout and file type are ATS-readable so your resume doesn’t get filtered out when you apply for a job.

It’s an investment

A resume writer will use their talent and skill to help you land a great job, and their assistance can often lead to better roles. Thus, you can consider your choice to hire one an investment in your professional future, especially if it leads to a life-changing position that positively impacts your career trajectory.

"Resume writers have extensive expertise with written communication and know how to advertise your skills well. Some are even accredited or boast industry certifications."

The cons of hiring a resume writer

Hiring a resume writer can be advantageous, but it isn’t without potential downsides. Here are a few reasons job hunters may want to think twice before relying on such a service.

Resume writers generally charge a fee for their service, which means you’ll have to pay for a well-written resume. Fees can vary depending on which professional you use, so you’ll have to interview several to get a sense of how much they’ll charge.

Not personalized enough

Despite the fact that your resume will be tailored, there’s always the possibility that it won’t be sufficiently individualized. Because someone else wrote it, your resume may lack personal flair, making its voice come across as inauthentic.

Loss of control and dependency

Hiring a resume writer requires you to share information about your past and professional life. You’ll have little control over what your resume writer does with that information.

Additionally, people sometimes become dependent on resume writers, making them less likely to put in the work to strengthen their own resume-writing skills.

The possibility of misrepresentation

In an effort to ensure that a paying job seeker puts their best foot forward, some resume writers may exaggerate the applicant’s skills by misrepresenting or misinterpreting them. This could lead to issues you aren’t prepared for in the application process.

It takes time

While working with a resume writer could put you on a promising career path, it may not yield an immediate payoff. You may have to wait to see results, especially if you still need to work on your interview skills.

Is it worth hiring a professional resume writer?

The answer to the question of whether it’s worth it to hire a professional resume writer isn’t clear-cut. It can help to consider the following points while you’re deliberating:

  • Career Goals: Are you looking for a promotion or to advance in your career?
  • Budget: Can you afford to pay a resume writer?
  • Complexity: Are you struggling with a career change, a lengthy career history, or a disjointed professional background?
  • Time: Do you have time to learn how to write a good resume?
  • Due diligence: Do you understand the resume norms and trends in your industry?

Think about how much time, money, and effort you’re willing to invest in your career. Doing so will help you decide whether hiring a resume writer is the right move.

Only you can decide whether a resume writer can help you reach your goals

While getting advice from resume and cover letter articles can be beneficial, resume writers have a knack for communicating job hunters’ skills and strengths in a way that can wow hiring managers and recruiters. They can be great for those who have complex professional histories or lack the time to write an effective resume themselves.

Even so, hiring a resume writer means handing over the reins to another person with whom you must share your personal details. You’ll also need to budget to pay for their services.

In the end, the choice is yours. For some, hiring a professional resume writer will be the best move. For others, cover letter and resume templates , like ones from Jobseeker , may be a more practical option.

Either way, what’s most important is ensuring that your resume and cover letters portray professionalism and confidence as they highlight you as the best candidate for the job.

In the simplest terms, a resume writer helps job seekers to prepare a professional, well-formatted resume by determining the best way to present their work history, accomplishments, and skills.

These aren’t just random professionals. Resume writers are educated people who are typically certified in resume writing. They usually have experience in a specific industry or field as well as the writing skills necessary to craft excellent resumes.

Your resume is essentially a marketing tool. Companies hire marketing departments because they are experts in all things marketing. Resume writers know how to craft compelling copy and format it in a way that appeals to employers.

The process will differ from writer to writer or service to service. But, most resume writers will want to see your existing resume to start. They will also want to know more about you, your accomplishments, your work history , and your goals. This will be gathered via conversations with the writer, questionnaires, or worksheets, or some combination of those options.

Having a resume writer work with you to build your best resume will usually lead to an increase in interview requests. Remember that you want to work with a good, qualified resume writer. Using a subpar service or unqualified writer will leave you in the exact same position you’re already in — though with emptier pockets.

Inside knowledge of hiring practices. Professional resume writers will know what questions to ask and how to present the information in the best way. They know how to guide you through the process and provide you with tips and helpful information that templates simply won’t have.

Their goal is to get you hired. So, they are committed to creating a hire-worthy resume that gets you the results you’re looking for.

If you choose the right resume writer or service, you will be working with an expert in your industry or field who knows what keywords work best, what information to include, and how to appeal to the employers you want to work with.

Professional writing experience. Resume writers are usually experts in writing. They can help improve your own writing and help create unique working and phrases. They also do this for a living so they know which keywords to use and when to use it.

Resume writers often know which type of formats are best and which catch a hiring managers attention. They are able to help yours stand out from the crowd.

Minimal stress. Writing a resume can be stressful. Especially if you haven’t had any luck with your getting noticed. Using a resume writer relieves that stress. They will do the hard and complex work and present you the finished product. All you have to worry about is sending it to the hiring managers.

Learning opportunities. After using a resume writer, you can use what you’ve learned to help create any future resumes. All you have to do is use theirs as a template and update any information or add any keywords for specific jobs.

Even the best plans have some pitfalls. Hiring a resume writer is not all cupcakes and rainbows. There are certainly some downsides to this option.

Formatting issues. Sure they don’t use the same cookie-cutter templates everyone else is using. But, they may be using a design that won’t trigger the Applicant Tracking System the employer is using. If the ATS isn’t triggered, then the hiring managers and recruiters will never see your resume.

Applicant Tracking Systems are the gatekeepers. You need to pass their inspection before moving on to the next stage. If your resume writer is not prepared for the needs of these systems, then they are doing you a disservice.

Pay attention to the formatting and design of any sample resumes they provide. If they are too fancy, too cluttered, or not well organized, then the ATS will not pick them up properly.

They may not know the industry. If you’re working on choosing the right resume writer, then they should have industry expertise. Unfortunately, this isn’t always possible, especially if you work in a niche market or an emerging market.

If the resume writer you are hiring does not have the expertise in the industry or position that you are applying for, it leaves them lacking the knowledge you need to build an eye-catching resume that screams “hire me” to the right people.

It can be pricey. Then, of course, there is the cost. Resume writing services are expensive. Costs can range from $200 to $2000 or more. If you are looking for an executive resume, the range is more like $300 to $3000.

Keep in mind, though, that you get what you pay for. The lower end of that price range will not produce high-quality work and will likely involve more electronic communications and questionnaires than actual one-on-one time with the resume writer.

It may take longer than expected. You’re paying a lot of money so you may think it’s going to come right away, but that’s not always the case. Most resume writers take about a week, sometimes longer, to get your resume back.

Using a resume writer means you are getting a higher quality resume, but that means waiting. If you have a deadline for when your resume is due, make sure to get it to the writer with enough time to spare.

Unfortunately, it isn’t as simple as a quick google search. Choosing the resume writer or resume writing service you want to work with will take some time.

Choosing wrong will only leave you wasting time and money. If you are not going to put in the effort to find the right person for you, then you may as well save your money and attempt to do it all on your own.

When choosing a resume writer:

Know your needs. Before you start this process, you should know your goals , your timeline, and your budget.

Do your homework. Before choosing a resume writing service, you need to do your research and dig a little deeper. Not all resume writers are created equal.

If you are shelling out the cash to hire a resume writer, you want them to be certified. Many will claim to have the certifications, but make sure you are verifying that information. Unfortunately, as we all know by now, not everything you read on the internet is true.

In addition to that certification, you want to be sure that they are the right fit for your needs. So, review their background, their education, their qualifications (as they suit your needs), and their credentials too.

Choose an expert. You want the resume writer you choose to have experience in the industry or field you are applying to. Even better, they should have knowledge and experience in the particular role you are applying for.

This experience and knowledge give you the upper hand. They will be intimately familiar with the keywords, formatting, achievements, etc., that will best appeal to the employers in your field.

Understand their services. Their credentials, certifications, and background are certainly important. You also want to be aware of what exactly they are offering you.

Pay attention to the review process. If you don’t have the option to review it and request changes, then you might want to skip them.

You should be speaking directly with the resume writer for an extended period of time to give them an idea of what should be included before you set them off to put it together in a pretty package. There may be some questionnaires or forms as well, but you should have direct interaction with the writer themselves.

They should have a deep understanding of how Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) work, not just the wordsmithing skills to write up a pretty resume. Their designs should be ATS friendly and include the keywords that this particular employer will be looking for.

The resume designs should be clean and organized. If they are too fancy or too colorful, or too overcrowded, the Applicant Tracking Systems won’t read them well, and they’ll be skipped, never making it to the hiring manager ’s shortlist.

Check their testimonials. The resume writer should have plenty of positive reviews and testimonials from their happy customers. You can also check their LinkedIn profiles to see if anyone endorsed their resume writing skills in the Skills section.

Honestly? Everyone. They can help job seekers in any stage of their career or job search . But, there are certain situations where job seekers may be more inclined to using resume writing services.

It may be more difficult to write your own resume if:

You are a recent graduate with limited job experience

You are making a career change

You have a large gap, or gaps, in your work history

You have a series of jobs, or gigs, that don’t fit into one industry or field

You are switching from freelance or contract work to a full-time position

You are applying for positions in a niche market; or, alternatively, you are currently working in a niche market and are seeking positions outside of that market

You are not a strong writer, or you are severely limited on time availability

Your job search has gone on for much longer than expected

You have a lot of relevant experience and aren’t sure how to format or narrow down the information

Evaluate your budget. Since resume writers can be pricey, make sure you have it in your budget before hiring one. You don’t want to spend all your money on a resume writer if you need it for something else. Especially if you are out of work and are having a hard time finding something.

Consider if your resume needs it. If you aren’t having any luck getting any interviews, try changing your format or adding new keywords. That might be all you need for your resume to get noticed. If you still aren’t having any luck, then it might be time to look for a resume writer.

Consider your timeline. If you need a resume by tomorrow, then it may not be the best choice to go with a resume writer. It can take a week, sometimes longer for you to get your resume back. Make sure you have enough time before hiring a writer.

Pay attention to red flags. If the prices seem extreme or they are making guarantees they can’t possibly back up; they may not be the right choice for you.

Don’t settle. Contact a few resume writers until you find the one that is right for you.

So, Is it worth hiring a Resume Writer? For the most part, yes. So long as you are hiring a competent, professional resume writer who has experience in your field, hiring a resume writer can help you get a leg up on the competition. And, these days, competition is fierce.

Yes, these services can certainly be expensive. And, if you’re looking for your next job, money may be tight. But, if you are really in need of professional assistance, then you should seek it. Consider it an investment in your career and your future.

How We Chose The Best Resume Writing Services

To compile this list, we sought out well-known resume writing services with overwhelmingly positive customer reviews and compared key offerings.

  • We looked for reputable resume writing services with proven results; each service had to meet our standards in terms of overall value, turnaround time, professionalism and satisfaction guarantees.
  • We evaluated each service side-by-side to determine which performs better at writing a robust resume in an accurate, timely manner.
  • Everyone has unique needs when it comes to searching for a job, so we made sure to recommend options that span different career goals and budgets, whether that includes getting career consultation or polishing up an existing resume.

What To Look For When Choosing The Best Resume Writing Service

Resume writing services come in a wide range of prices, and the best options for you will largely depend on your needs and budget. Affordable services like ResumeCompanion offer a step-by-step process for building your own resume for $8 a month, while other services provide a more hands-on approach for around $150. Packages typically go up to $250-$300 when you add Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)-optimization, cover letter writing, interview prep and career coaching.

Turnaround Time

If your job application has a set deadline, take a look at the service’s turnaround time before committing. Most services take anywhere from two days to two weeks to provide a finalized resume. Some promise a draft in 24 hours, like Craft Resumes .

Ease Of Use

When deciding on a resume writing service, take a look at how easy the website is to navigate. Is it difficult to browse different templates, download your files or customize your resume? The job application process is often stressful, so a resume writing service should alleviate—not contribute to—some of that stress.

Customization Options

A resume needs to accurately reflect your unique qualifications, skills and industry standards. For this reason, consider which customization options the service provides. Many of our recommendations use writers, recruiters or HR professionals to tailor your application documents to your unique needs.

Writer Qualifications

With AI solutions like ChatGPT readily available, you’ll want to check whether or not your resume writer is qualified to provide the help you need. To do this, take a look at the service’s writer qualifications. Some services use writers certified by the Professional Association of Resume Writers & Career Coaches (PARWCC) or National Resume Writers Association (NRWA), while others are run by recruiters or HR professionals.

Privacy Policies

Because some websites and apps collect your personal information, it’s important to check the privacy policies before signing up. Look for whether the site stores or shares that information with third parties, and whether you can adjust your privacy settings to opt out of this setting.

Is It Worth Paying For A Resume Writing Service?

Professionally-written resumes through a reputable service can help you stand out from the competition. They’re often designed to highlight your best qualities, and are keyword-optimized for most applicant tracking systems. If you’re struggling with employment gaps or career changes, a resume writing service can help give you a leg up. And some services will also provide reviews for custom cover letters, Linkedin profiles, interview prep and career coaching.

What’s The Best Resume Writing Company?

The best resume writing company is affordable, offers high-quality review and writing services and is easy to use. Our top pick overall— TopResume —provides the professionalism and quality most mid- to high-level job seekers need, from its free resume review to its customizable options.

Resume writing service

Would you consider a resume writer as an investment in your career?

As most job seekers understand all too well, the resume creation process is anything but simple. Many people spend days or weeks trying to perfect their resumes. And don’t fool yourself: that quest for perfection is key since your resume is the single most important tool in your job search arsenal.

But are resume services worth it?

If you’ve been considering working with a resume writing service, this article is for you!

What is a resume writer?

Many people are surprised to find that they can hire someone to write their resume for them. After all, a resume is a pretty personal document! But in an increasingly competitive job market, job seekers are turning to the experts to help them achieve faster results from their job search.

Resume writers are professionals who work with you to create a bespoke job search document that aligns your skills, experience, and qualifications with your career objectives and the specific requirements of the industry and roles you’re targeting. Resume writers have read hundreds if not thousands of resumes and know what is boring, tired, unimpressive, or otherwise undesirable in a resume. They also know what grabs attention and what employers are looking for.

Of course, there’s a cost involved. So, are resume services worth it? There’s a lot to consider and that’s what we’re delving into in this article. We’ll look at why you may want to take this step and the different types of service out there, so that you can make an informed decision.

Why hire a resume-writing service?

The first question you need to ask yourself is why you might want to hire a professional resume-writing service. Did you know that hiring managers have become adept at filtering out bad resumes, and, on average, they only spend a few seconds on the initial scan of each document? A professional resume writing service is there to ensure that your valuable skills and experiences are properly conveyed to recruiters and your prospective employer.

Top reasons for working with a resume-writing service

Job seekers turn to resume writers for a variety of reasons, but they all come down to one thing: wanting to present the very best version of themselves to prospective employers. We’ve gathered some of the top reasons people give when they’re weighing up the answer to, “Are resume services worth it?”

They haven’t written a resume for years

Often, job seekers have been headhunted into roles based on recommendations from former colleagues, or they’ve been with the same employer for many years. Unfortunately, the job market is ever-changing – and so are resume best practices! What worked 20 years ago is unlikely to make the cut today – and that’s where professional resume writers can fill the gap.

They have too much information to fit into a concise document

Once you’re settled into your career, the experience starts to stack up. You gain more skills, you attend courses, and you move into new roles… you’ve got an awful lot to fit onto the standard two pages !

Professional resume writers are a lifeline in this situation. They know what to include, what to ditch, and what to rephrase more concisely so that you’re presenting your sales brochure rather than your life story.

They’re overwhelmed with online advice

Are resume services worth it when there’s so much information and so many resources available online? Interestingly, that’s one of the main reasons that people DO hire resume writers. The amount of information available online, much of it conflicting, can be overwhelming. And none of it is tailored to your personal situation. A resume writer will cut through the noise to create a document that will bear witness to you and your needs.

They need a resume for a specific role

However long you spend crafting the perfect resume, it isn’t a one-size-fits-all document. Your master resume will need to be tweaked for each individual role you apply for so that it shows exactly how you meet the specific needs of each employer. Whether you have your master resume ready to go and need it tailored to a specific role , or you need help creating the master resume to tweak yourself, there’s a resume writer with the expertise to do that.

They’re short on time

Let’s face it, writing a resume is a time-consuming task and not one that many people relish. If you’d rather dedicate your free time to job hunting, interview prep, or the latest box set, that’s fine! Let your resume writer take the strain while you spend your time doing what you need to do.

They’re not getting responses from their existing resume

So you thought your resume was the bee's knees, but the responses you get from sending it out say otherwise. When you’re not getting interviews for jobs you could do standing on your head in the dark; it’s time for some expert input.

What type of resume-writing service is best?

You’ll soon find that there are different types of resume-writing services available, so you’ll need to decide which option works best for you. As you might imagine, they each offer different levels of service, and the prices can vary dramatically.

Resume Factories

Be wary of resume factories, or “resume mills” as they’re sometimes called. These services often employ people with little professional resume knowledge. Many of their writers are inexperienced or may even lack proficiency in your native language. In addition, the companies behind these operations generally fail to provide the type of professional guidelines those writers would need to optimize their resumes properly.

Make no mistake: this type of resume-writing service is almost never worth the money you pay. If you do get a product back, it tends to be incomprehensible or rely on creative resume formats to disguise the fact that there is very little content.

You can spot these resume writer services by looking for these 3 things:

Promises that you’ll land a job – resumes win interviews

No phone number to contact

No examples of resumes they've written

Template services or resume builders

A resume template service cannot technically qualify as a resume-writing service at all. We’ve included it here, however, to note that they exist since you are likely to encounter them if you’re looking for a service. These operations tend to be a mixed bag, so there is always a risk when you use them.

Basically, they don’t actually write resumes at all. Instead, a resume builder provides one or more templates for you to enter all your work history details, and then the service creates a resume based on the template. If this is what you're looking for, here are 12 popular resume builders .

The costs are usually reasonable (if hidden), but the results can often be all but useless. As a rule, this option is only useful if you just want to get your basic resume details on record and plan to deliver the resume directly to the person who makes the hiring decisions. If you're using this resume for online applications, you risk getting overlooked by the applicant tracking system software due to formatting errors.

For example, if the resume template puts your contact information in the header or footer of a document, an ATS often won’t see it. If you’re still wondering, “Are resume builders worth it?” We’d say, “Probably not.”

Certified Professional Resume Writers

Your best option will always be to rely on true professionals. The best resume writing services will have qualified, experienced resume writers on staff. These professionals will be able to take your important information and craft a relevant, effective resume that provides the branding you need to stand out from the crowd. They also understand what hiring managers and recruiters want to see on a resume in 2024.

As you might expect, though, resume writers will require more time and more money because they are true experts. The process also requires greater collaboration from you. Hiring a resume writer means you are involved at different stages of the process. The writer will need to clarify details and ask for your complete trust that the final product satisfies current industry standards and your job seeking needs.

You can find a certified professional resume writer on platforms like LinkedIn or use a trusted service with a wide network of writers. LinkedIn resume writers’ costs can vary wildly, but you’ll have a huge range to choose from and are bound to find one in your region or industry. Our team researched over 200 resume service offers and came up with a list of the top 10 resume writing services for all industries.

Services and individual resume writers come in all shapes and sizes, so research a few different services to see which one best meets your personal needs.

Tips for hiring a resume writer

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of resume writers out there for you to choose from. So how can you be sure you’re choosing the best? Well, it really comes down to what you, as an individual, need.

Services. Some writers provide only a resume. Others offer cover letters and LinkedIn profiles, too. Others still offer career coaching or interview support. Select one that offers the services you need, and make sure you’re not paying for those you don’t.

Contact. How would you prefer to work with your writer? From web forms and email to phone consultations and Zoom chats, your communication preferences matter, so find someone who can accommodate your wishes.

Speed. If you want to apply for a role that closes this week, you’ll need to find a resume-writing service that offers expedited delivery. On the other hand, if you’re planning ahead, you could save money by opting for a standard turnaround time.

Budget. You’ll find a huge variation in the cost of resume services. Make sure the one you choose can offer the service you expect at a price-point you find acceptable.

Qualifications. Anyone can set themselves up as a resume writer, so you’ll need to research the service you intend to use. How long have they been in business? Do they have positive reviews and testimonials? Are they accredited by an industry body? Make sure you’re confident with their credentials before parting with any money.

So, are resume services worth it?

The answer to this question all boils down to one basic truth: your resume matters.

Now, if you’re a competent writer and have the time to learn what it takes to create an effective resume, then you probably don’t need to hire a resume writing service. However, if you have little experience with professional writing, then you almost certainly need a resume-writing service to help you create a winning resume so you can secure job interviews and land your dream job.

As noted, resume factories and templates can be of questionable value. A professional resume writing service, though, is more than just a means to an end. It is an investment in your job search efforts and your future and could be the key to achieving your ultimate career goals.

You get what you pay for, obviously. The key to ensuring that your resume writing service is worth the cost is to choose wisely. Find a well-known, reputable company that actively works with you to craft the perfect resume for your needs. When you can do that, your resume will almost certainly be worth the money you paid.

And when you consider the return on that investment, the costs for a professional writer are minimal indeed!

If you’re not sure whether you need to invest in a professional resume writing service, why not send your resume for a free, no-obligation review by our experts? With our feedback, you’ll have the information you need to decide whether to invest or whether your efforts hit the mark.

Are Professional Resume Writers Worth It?

Please note: This post may contain affiliate links.

Updating your resume is one of the most tedious aspects of job searching, but it’s also one of the most important if you want your application to actually be considered. A good resume should spotlight your strengths, be tailored to the job, and be free from grammar and spelling errors, all of which take time to accomplish.

Whether you’re in a hurry to get your resume updated fast or you’re not a natural-born writer and need some help making your credentials shine, you may be considering hiring a professional resume writer to help you out. But are resume writing services worth it? Read on to learn about the pros and cons of using a resume writer and some tips for a positive outcome if you decide to hire one.

What is a professional resume writer?

A professional resume writer is a person who specializes in helping job seekers create and update their resumes. Resume writers assist with customizing resume content for each individual job, highlighting the right qualifications, and including keywords and other elements to make it past automated applicant tracking systems that companies use to scan and filter resumes. Resume writers sometimes offer complementary job-search services like updating LinkedIn bios and mock interviewing.

How much does a resume writing service cost?

Resume writing services can vary substantially when it comes to price. You might pay as little as

$50 for basic edits and proofreading and up to $1,000 or more for a comprehensive, industry-specific resume revamp.

Benefits of using a professional resume writer

A professional resume writer knows what hiring managers are looking for and can help you create a document that reflects those expectations. If you haven’t job searched in a while, they can make sure you’re adhering to current best practices and aren’t following any outdated advice. A resume writer with experience in your specific industry may have inside knowledge of the best keywords to use and skills to feature to ensure your resume gets noticed.

Positioning

Customizing your resume for each job you apply to is a basic principle of job searching success. A resume writer makes your resume as appealing as possible for the job you want, demonstrating that you meet all the qualifications and can perform the required duties. This is one of the toughest parts of resume writing for the everyday job applicant, so having a pro tackle it can take a lot of work off your plate.

Objectivity

Writing about yourself is difficult and even more challenging to say how great you are without under- or over-selling your capabilities. A third-party resume writer can take emotion out of the process, showcasing your skills in a positive and accurate way.

A professional resume writer will deliver your completed document on a deadline. This can be helpful if you struggle with procrastination or need to find a new job quickly.

Maybe you’ve got the basics of your resume content down but need another set of eyes to give it that extra level of refinement. A professional writer can ensure that your resume is free from spelling and grammatical errors that can get you disqualified while laying out the information in a clean, easily digestible format.

Downsides of using a professional resume writer

If you’re already out of a job, money might be tight. It can be a tough decision to shell out for a resume service that may or may not help you get hired faster. Consider whether a trusted friend or mentor can assist with your resume preparation.

Credibility

In order to ensure your investment is well spent, you’ll need to search for and vet a credible writer, which takes time. Unfortunately, there are people who bill themselves as resume writers who lack credentials and are only out to make a buck or who prey upon people in the stressful situation of being out of a job.

Lack of personal touch

While a professional writer can take your resume to the next level, one thing they can’t do is replicate your unique voice. A professionally written resume may feel that way–professional but lacking the personal element that can set great candidates apart.

Who should hire a resume writer?

You may be a good candidate for working with a resume writer if you:

  • Are applying for jobs that use an ATS (applicant tracking system) to screen candidates
  • Are applying for a middle- or upper-management position where showcasing your accomplishments is key
  • Are having trouble describing your qualifications or demonstrating your results
  • Have resume gaps, short employment stints, or other red flags that need finesse in positioning
  • Have a complex career path that’s hard to explain on a resume (switching fields, returning to the workforce after being a caregiver, etc.)
  • You are not a native English speaker
  • Struggle to use Microsoft Word to format documents

Who should NOT hire a resume writer?

You might want to reconsider working with a resume writer if you:

  • Are applying for an internal position
  • Are applying for a job where someone personally referred you
  • Are in a creative field like art or design where your portfolio will be given priority
  • Are a recent college grad, in which case you should take the time to create your first draft and pay only for editing, if anything

Tips for hiring a professional resume writer

1. ask for referrals.

Using a writer in your network or someone who was recommended by a friend is ideal. This will ensure you’re working with a trustworthy professional who won’t waste your time or money.

Our recommendation for a professional resume writing service is BeamJobs !

2. Do your homework

If you’re hiring a resume writer off an online platform, conduct some screening to verify their experience and results. Browse their online portfolio, read resume writing samples, and check out reviews from previous clients. Ask if they can provide references for those who have gotten results from working with them. Look for certified resume writers; CPRW, ACRW, and NCRW are a few of the top industry credentials that recognize resume writers who meet certain standards.

3. Look for specialization

There are some types of jobs where a resume writer with specific experience can really make a difference. Government jobs and executive-level positions are two such examples. If you’re in a specialized field or looking for a niche role, you’ll definitely want to work with a resume writer who has prior experience in this area.

4. Know what you’re paying for

Get a precise quote before you commit to working with anyone. Know the exact amount you’ll be charged and what that fee will get you. For example, does it include a conversation with the writer to discuss your needs? What about if edits are required–are those included in the price, or do they cost extra? A credible resume writer should be able to clearly articulate the deliverables you’ll receive and how much you’ll pay.

5. Discuss your goals

A good resume writer will ask questions to understand what jobs you’re applying for and what you want to do in this next career phase. This information will help them optimize your resume, and it’s important that you’re on the same page.

6. Set a deadline

Before you exchange any money, agree upon a delivery date for the first draft of your document and any follow-up revisions if they’re needed.

7. Use what you learn

Once you have received the completed draft of your resume, compare it against the rough draft you provided to see what edits they made. Or, if the writer created your resume from scratch, peruse it carefully to see how they organized your information and positioned your accomplishments. This intel can assist you in writing future versions of your resume so you don’t have to pay someone each time you need an update.

8. Consider alternatives

If you’ve decided that you need help with your resume but aren’t ready to commit to the time and expense of working with a professional writer, consider options that are easier on your wallet. Thankfully, many low- and no-cost alternatives exist, including:

  • Our resume library , which features a range of templates and instructional materials by format and experience level
  • Your school’s career center or counselor, if you’re a student
  • Online forums where users offer free resume advice. R/resumes on Reddit is one such resource
  • YouTube videos from career experts
  • Having a friend who’s a strong writer look over your resume and make suggestions
  • Community career events, which often offer free resume reviews
  • Paying for a review of your resume rather than having it completely written by a pro which can save you a considerable amount of money

Your resume is no doubt an important aspect of your career to invest in. Whether you take the time to fine-tune it yourself or decide to hire an expert to help, perfecting your resume can help you get noticed as a candidate and land a job that will move you closer to your professional goals.

How we tested resume sites and services

When we evaluated the different resume templates and builders, we looked at how each site or app allowed you to create new resumes, browse templates or upload and edit existing resumes. We also looked at how easy or hard it would be to customize different templates and sections, how much guidance was available, how user-friendly it was to navigate, plus reading and understanding each company's privacy policies.

Some of our picks are free, some enlist the help of professional writers and some require a subscription or one-time payment. When it comes to premium or paid services, we evaluated how inclusive its packages were compared to basic or free versions. In many cases for the professional writing services, these paid tiers included more guidance and additional job search support like a cover letter and LinkedIn editing, suggested jobs to apply to and interview coaching.

Factors to consider when choosing a resume writing service

This was a key factor when compiling this list. Whether you're looking for a free service to boost your current resume or interested in professional editing services, there’s something for everyone’s price range.

Ease of use

When looking at each website, we looked at how easy it was to navigate, browse templates and add, edit or remove different sections. We also considered whether you can download and share your resume for free and in what format.

Customization options

Customization options were essential, as everyone's resume is going to look different. Having easy user control over your resume helps you create a resume that meets your industry's standards and showcases your professional experiences.

Privacy policies

Privacy policies were the final important factor to consider, as many of these are websites and apps that can collect and store your personal information. All of the services and websites included on this list have decent privacy settings, and we noted which ones have exceptionally clear use cases and account deletion policies.

  • Updated January 29, 2024 9 min read

TL;DR: 5 Best resume advice according to reddit

1. use a single column layout to pass the ats.

  • 2. Don't name your resume 'resume.pdf'

3. Keep your job descriptions short. Use bullet points and action verbs

4. use numbers to quantify your achievements, 5. less is more for both word count & job applications per day, 6. use resume builders to make your life easier, key takeaways: best resume advice according to reddit.

First, for those in a hurry, here's the TL;DR version of our top five resume advice gathered from Reddit:

  • Use a single column layout to pass the ATS.
  • Don't name your resume 'resume.pdf'.
  • Keep you job descriptions short. Use bullet points and action verbs.
  • Use numbers to quantify your achievements.
  • Less is more for both word count & job applications per day.
  • Use resume builders to make your life easier.

Now, let's look at the best resume advice according to Reddit users more closely. Here's what we think:

If you thought that layout doesn't play any significant role in the success rate of your resume, you thought wrong!

In case the company you're applying to uses an Applicant Tracking System, always opt for a single column layout .

The reason? ATS compatibility.

Even though all ATSs are designed to read text from top to bottom, left to right , not every ATS is programmed to distinguish between columns.

And you just can't know with certainty which software you'll encounter. Therefore, reduce the risk of your resume being incorrectly processed or rejected by picking a one-column ATS friendly resume template . This will make the process of parsing and interpreting information easier and safer.

HOWEVER. That doesn't mean you should discard the two-column resume all-together. Here are some reasons why a two-column layout can still be beneficial :

  • Non-ATS employers . Many companies still don't use ATS systems, making the ATS compatibility argument less relevant in these cases. For these employers, the visual and organizational benefits of a two-column layout could be more advantageous.
  • Aesthetics . A two-column format can be more visually engaging, making your resume stand out.
  • Ease of reading . Smaller chunks of information can make the resume easier for the human eye to navigate.
  • Space management . For those with less experience, a two-column layout can help evenly distribute text and avoid large empty spaces.
  • Strategic organization . It allows for a more strategic presentation of information, guiding the recruiter's eyes through your resume efficiently.

Moreover, if you're just entering the workforce with no experience , your resume is probably still quite sparse.

Because of this, you may end up with a large, unattractive empty space at the bottom of your document. And with one-column structure resumes, this is often the case.

There' s an easy fix! Organizing your resume sections into a two-column structure can help spread the text more evenly.

2. Don't name your resume 'resume.pdf'

Indeed, putting together a good resume is quite a tedious process.

There're so many rules and principles to think about, for instance:

  • Every single resume section, whether it be the resume summary , work experience section, education section, skills section, or any other optional section, requires your full and undivided attention.
  • You must remember to always tailor your resume to fit a specific job description .
  • Not to mention the subsequent formatting and proofreading!

By the time you've finished writing your resume, you're likely mentally drained.

It's at this time that errors creep out from the most unexpected places.

One such error is not naming your resume file appropriately .

How to name your resume file: step-by-step.

When naming your resume file for submission, it's important to consider clarity, professionalism, and the likelihood of it being easily found by the recruiters.

Here are our recommendations for naming your resume file:

  • Use your name. Start with your full name. This is the most crucial piece of information because it clearly identifies the document as yours. For example, "PeterStones" .
  • Specify the document type. Make it clear that the document is a resume . This helps distinguish your resume from other documents like a cover letter . For example, " Resume ".
  • Add the job title. This can be particularly helpful if you are sending the resume directly to a hiring manager. For example, " ProductManager ".
  • Use a professional format. Avoid using any unnecessary symbols or fancy formatting. Underscores (_) or hyphens (-) are acceptable to separate words.

A good file name for your resume could look like this: "PeterStones_Resume_ProductManager.pdf".

Finally, before hitting send, consider carefully what to write in an email when sending a resume . Of course, when you're applying for a job, every detail matters. Don't neglect the content of your email – it's also responsible for making a positive first impression.

Undoubtedly, you know that the work experience section is the heart and soul of your resume.

The recruiters always pay it the most attention, and so you need to be extra diligent and patient while writing about your past employment.

Consequently, many will try to fit in as much information as humanly possible, disregarding the readability and quality of their entries. To steer clear from such mistake, follow these two simple principles:

  • Organize your work descriptions into bullet points . Under each work experience entry, list 4-5 bullet points underlining your most notable responsibilities and achievements. That is to say, you should focus on demonstrating the impact your presence had on your former employment, rather than just stating your daily duties.
  • Open the said bullet points with action verbs . The recruiters don't care about long winding sentences! That's why it's a good idea to start each bullet point with an action verb . This will not only make your writing more concise, but it'll also depict you as a proactive, and therefore valuable, employee.

For example, a well conceptualized work entry description can look like this:

Work experience entry example:

Senior Product Manager XYZ Tech Solutions, New York, NY | June 2019 – Present

  • Led a team of 8 in the development of an innovative mobile application, increasing user retention by 35% within six months.
  • Collaborated with cross-departmental teams to streamline product delivery, reducing time-to-market by 20%.
  • Managed product lifecycle from concept to launch, including market analysis, positioning, and rollout strategy.
  • Oversaw a budget of $1M, optimizing resource allocation and cutting costs by 15% without impacting product quality.

This is another great resume advice according to a Reddit user!

The recruiters adore to see numbers in your resume! Why, you ask?

It makes life a bit easier for them. By quantifying your accomplishments, you simultaneously allow recruiters to better gauge your abilities ; and add more weight to your words .

Be as specific as you can - numbers are universal.

Struggling to figure out how to incorporate numbers into your resume? Here are few examples of what you can quantify:

  • Revenue and sales increases. If you contributed to growing revenue or sales, specify the percentage or dollar amount of the increase. For example: " Boosted sales by 20% within a six-month period. "
  • Cost reduction. Similarly, if you implemented strategies that reduced costs, mention the amount or percentage saved. For example: " Cut operational costs by 15% through process optimization ."
  • Time efficiency. If you streamlined processes, indicate how much time was saved. For example: " Reduced project turnaround time by 30% ."
  • Team management. If you manage a team, you can specify the number of people you supervise. For example: " Led a team of 12 sales professionals ."
  • Project scope and delivery. Quantify the size or value of the projects you managed, then mention if you delivered them under budget or ahead of schedule. For example:  " Managed projects worth $2M, consistently delivering 10% under budget ."
  • Training and development. If you were involved in training, mention the number of people you trained or the improvement in performance post-training. For example: " Trained over 30 employees, leading to a 40% increase in overall team efficiency. "

Resume advice two-in-one!

As this Reddit user rightly pointed out, less is sometimes more .

This is especially true when it comes to the content of your resume as well as the amount of job applications you send out each day .

When crafting your resume, keep in mind that you must show the recruiters that you have everything they're looking for . Chances are, you actually have much more – more diverse job experience; more interesting hobbies; or more fulfilling volunteer work you'd like to share with them.

Obviously, resumes have their length limitations . Once you've started to write yours, you'll soon learn that you have to be picky!

Recruiters prefer resumes that are focused, relevant, and straight-to-the-point. In other words, don't make them read information they didn't ask for.

The same applies to applying for jobs.

Many in this situation start panic-applying to every single job posting they find. Because they assume that the more applications they send, the bigger their chances at landing a job will be.

Makes sense right?

In theory, maybe. In practice? Hardly!

Believe it or not, there's such a thing as sending too many applications. Basically, if your solely focus on the quantity of applications, you're running the risk of sacrificing their quality .

And that is a problem. If you'd like to learn how to go about this problem, including tips on how to manage the pressure of job hunting, take a look at what research says about the ideal number of job applications .

Now, hand over your heart!

Would you prefer to sit in front of your computer for hours, battling with Microsoft Word and its many settings? Trying to create a perfect resume design from scratch?

Admit it, even the thought of setting margins and spacing makes you roll your eyes.

Hence, arguably the best resume advice according to reddit is to make a resume with an online resume builder to avoid these inconveniences (politely said).

No need to scratch your head over a layout or the best colour palette! Instead, simply pick a resume template that best suits your needs (both aesthetic and practical), fill in all your information, and watch your resume come to life in seconds.

Additionally, resume builders can proofread and correct any misspellings or typos you might've otherwise missed.

Sounds good? If so, your perfect resume is one click away.
