“We’ve had some great players at this club in my 20 years, but he’s up with the best.”

Real Madrid

However, despite the success, Ronaldo expressed a desire to leave the club, and move to Real Madrid. In 2009, Manchester United accepted an offer of £80 million from Real Madrid, making Ronaldo the most expensive player in the world.

His prolific goal-scoring record has lead to frequent comparison with Barcelona’s exceptional Lionel Messi. Sometimes, Ronaldo played up the rivalry, but at other times played it down.

“It’s part of my life now. People are bound to compare us. He tries to do his best for his club and for his national team, as I do, and there is a degree of rivalry with both of us trying to do the best for the teams we represent.”

– Cristiano Ronaldo

On 10 July 2018, Ronaldo was signed by Italian club Juventus for a €100 transfer fee (plus additional €12 million in other fees. Style of Play

There is widespread admiration for the athleticism, speed, talent and technical ability of Ronaldo. He has the capacity to dribble and beat players, and score a spectacular array of goals from overhead bicycle kicks to free-kicks and headers. Over the years, he has worked on both his physical strength and technical ability. He plays with tremendous confidence and often makes use of feints, dummies and step-overs, his skill and reputation make him a feared opponent. His self-confidence is a defining feature of his game and personality. Interviewed in 2018, he replied

“In my mind, I’m always the best. I don’t care what people think, what they say. In my mind, not just this year but always, I’m always the best.”

Cristiano Ronaldo BBC Sport ( 5 November 2015 ).

Ronaldo has a strong work ethic, and has been able to maintain a consistently high standard of play for several seasons:

“I am not a perfectionist, but I like to feel that things are done well. More important than that, I feel an endless need to learn, to improve, to evolve, not only to please the coach and the fans, but also to feel satisfied with myself. It is my conviction that there are no limits to learning, and that it can never stop, no matter what our age.”

– Cristiano Ronaldo.

He has sometimes been accused of having a petulant side. For example at the 2010 World Cup, he winked after getting David Beckham sent off.

Outside of football

Outside of football, he is often photographed with his model girlfriends and in his many sports car. Perhaps unfairly, he is characterised as the ultimate ‘playboy’ footballer, with his styled hair, and expensive clothes. In 2009, he was involved in a crash whilst driving his Ferrari. However, after reacting to newspaper claims he was involved in drinking in England, he replied,

“I don’t smoke or drink, and I’m not a big spender. I live in a rural part of Cheshire and my nearest neighbours are squirrels, birds and cows. Much of my time is spent at home with friends and family. I enjoy being peaceful and often sit by the candlelight to relax. Tranquillity is important to me.”

Ronaldo says he does not drink alcohol, which may be related to the early death of his father in 2005, aged 52 from alcohol-related liver damage.

He has also been involved in numerous philanthropy initiatives and has given parts of his salary to charitable relief efforts. He serves as a Save the Children Global artist ambassador.

Family life

He has three children via a surrogate mother and one daughter with a former girlfriend, Spanish model Georgina Rodriguez.

The legendary George Best said of Ronaldo:

“There have been a few players described as the new George Best over the years, but this is the first time it’s been a compliment to me.”

  • Born February 5 , 1985 · Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
  • Birth name Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro
  • The Sultan Of The Stepover
  • Pride of Portugal
  • Height 6′ 1″ (1.85 m)
  • Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on February 5, 1985, in Madeira, Portugal to Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and José Diniz Aveiro. Cristiano has an elder brother, Hugo and two elder sisters, Elma and Liliana Cátia. His name was inspired by the former US-president, Ronald Reagan, whom his father was influenced by. The island of Madeira was also the place where Cristiano first learned to master his skills as a footballer. He spent his early years playing for his local team, Nacional, and by the time he turned 12 years old, he already made his name for himself as one of Madeira's top footballers . It wasn't long before he started to catch the attention of other big Portuguese clubs. Among Sporting was Benfica, a team Cristiano and his father followed as a young boy. However he eventually chose to play for Sporting which was a team his mother loved and followed as she was growing up, to play with the likes of Figo was the dream for her son. He was then spotted by former Liverpool manager, Gerard Houllier at the age of sixteen but Liverpool had no intentions to sign him at that time because they thought he was too young and he needed more time to develop his skills. However, in the summer of 2003, when Sporting played against Manchester United and defeated them, Cristiano caught the attention of Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. Ronaldo became Manchester United's first-ever Portuguese player. Initially, he requested for the number 28 as his jersey number because he didn't feel that he could live up to the pressure of previous players such as George Best and David Beckham who wore the number 7 jersey. The year 2006 to 2008 proved to be a rather controversial year for the star. In the 2006 World Cup, Cristiano faced accusations regarding his sportsmanship. In a quarter-final match against England, he was heavily criticized for sending of his club team mate, Wayne Rooney who was playing for the England team. It wasn't too long until fans started accepting Cristiano again. In 2007, he won PFA Young Player of the Year, PFA Player of the Year, PFA Fans' Player of the Year, Portuguese Footballer of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year, Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year and Manchester United's Players' Player of the Year. The year 2008 also saw him taking back the PFA Player Of The Year Award for the second time running. That same year, Ronaldo also had to deal with controversies regarding his club transfer to Spanish giants, Real Madrid. He eventually chose to stay with Manchester United and stressed to the public that he had no intentions of leaving the club. Cristiano now lives with his cousin, Nuno and his brother in law Ze. When he is not on the field, he is a very family oriented person. Growing up, when he was about to choose football as his career, he said that it was very difficult for him as that would mean lesser time with his family, especially his mother, whom he says play a major role in his life. During his free time, Cristiano enjoys cooking. He mentioned in an interview that he usually cooks before he leaves for his soccer practice. Because he is constantly training, Cristiano rarely has time to watch TV. If he does get the time to watch, he says he loves watching one of the local Portuguese game show which is mostly about trivia questions. Cristiano is an avid learner and he takes interest in learning new things everyday. Among Cristiano's biggest pet peeves are smoking, people who don't make an effort and dishonesty. When the tsunami hit South East Asia, Cristiano flew to Indonesia to help those in need. He auctioned off a few stuff to help raise funds for charity. He hopes to get involved in more charity projects in the future because he believes his star status will help him reach out to others for help. - IMDb Mini Biography By: Ezequiel De Castilla

At the age of seven, Ronaldo showed a great passion for soccer and played for a local team, Andorinha, where his father worked as a kit man. At the age of just eight years old, Ronaldo's talent was noticed by a former player and scout for Sporting Lisbon , a professional soccer team in Portugal. He was offered a trial with the club and soon after, was accepted into their youth academy.

He was diagnosed with racing heart condition which could have halted his footballing career when he was 15. After a successful surgery, he was able to play again and was promoted to the senior team at the age of 16. He became the first player to play for the U16, U17, U18, the B team and first team of the club in one season.

Ronaldo made his debut for Sporting CP in the Primeira Liga against Moreirense on 7 October 2002. He scored a brace with Sporting winning 3-0. He made 25 appearances and scored five goals for the club in the 2002-03 season.

In a friendly match between Sporting and Manchester United in August 2003, Ronaldo contributed greatly to help the Portuguese club defeat United 3-1. He impressed manager Sir Alex Ferguson and other United players with his pace and dribbling skills.

He spent just one season with the club before being signed by Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world, in 2003 for a transfer fee of £12.24 million. He made his debut on 16th August 2003 against Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League, when he came on as a substitute for Nicky Butt. He received a standing ovation as United won 4-0. Ronaldo was given the number 7 shirt after Edinson Cavani agreed to switch to number 21. The first 24 hours of Ronaldo's shirt sales was reported to have broken the all-time record following a transfer, overtaking Messi after his move to Paris Saint-Germain.

On 11 September, Ronaldo made his second debut at Old Trafford, scoring the opening two goals in a 4–1 league victory against Newcastle United . While his first few months at United were fruitful, his form started to dip in the second half of the season and he has a fractured relationship with interim manager Ralf Ragnick. Despite this, he finished as their top scorer, finding the net 24 times in 38 appearances.

In his second season under new manager Erik ten Hag, he found himself at the center of attention under media spotlight. Ronaldo publicly showed his dissatisfaction with the direction of United on and off the field. After failing to secure a transfer away from the club, he lost his starting spot in the team to the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial . With tensions mounting over being benched and falling out with Ten Hag, his contract was terminated on November 22, 2022 by mutual agreement. He only scored three goals in 16 appearances in the 2022-23 season.

On 30 December 2022, Saudi club Al-Nassr reached an agreement for Ronaldo to join the club effective 1 January 2023, signing a contract until 2025. Il Fenomeno

Ronaldo (born September 18 or 22, 1976, Itaguai, Brazil) is a retired football (soccer) player who led Brazil to a World Cup title in 2002 and who won three Player of the Year awards (1996, 1997, and 2002) from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

According to a FIFA tribute published in 2024:

Ronaldo was born in Itaguai, Rio de Janeiro on 18 September 1976, but his birth certificate was only issued four days later when his parents had scraped together enough money to pay for it. “The doctor delivered me for free because my parents couldn’t afford the birth,” Ronaldo explained. “Eventually, my father gathered three kilos of shrimp from the beach and gave it to the doctor as thanks. They also gave me the doctor’s name.”

Serena Williams poses with the Daphne Akhurst Trophy after winning the Women's Singles final against Venus Williams of the United States on day 13 of the 2017 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 28, 2017 in Melbourne, Australia. (tennis, sports)

The discrepancy between the date on Ronaldo’s birth certificate (September 22) and the date on which he says he was born (September 18)—the latter date supported by Ronaldo: The Journey of a Genius (2005), an enthusiastic biography by James Mosley, who claimed direct access to people around Ronaldo—has resulted in both dates being celebrated as his birthday on social media and elsewhere online by people, clubs, and organizations. Ronaldo himself has sent mixed signals. Among his former European clubs, three ( FC Barcelona , Inter Milan , and Real Madrid ) contend that he was born on September 22, 1976, while one ( AC Milan ) claims September 21.

Ronaldo grew up in the poor Rio de Janeiro suburb of Bento Ribeiro. He began playing football as a junior for the neighborhood Social Ramos Club at age 12 and two years later joined São Cristóvão in the Carioca League. By 1992 he was playing in the Brazilian championship for Cruzeiro.

Ronaldo was a member of Brazil ’s under-17 South American championship team in 1991 before joining the national side in 1994.

Ronaldo was transferred in 1994 from Cruzeiro to PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands , where he scored 55 goals in 56 games and won the 1995 league championship and the 1996 Dutch Cup.

After switching to FC Barcelona of Spain for the 1996–97 season, he scored 34 goals in 37 appearances and helped his team capture the Spanish Super Cup.

Because of his success in Spain, Ronaldo was paid $27 million by Inter Milan to play for the Italian club in 1997, a record at the time. At Inter his excellent dribbling skills and knack for scoring goals earned him the nickname “Il Fenomeno.”

In 1997 Ronaldo became the first player to win FIFA’s Player of the Year award two years in a row. In 1999, however, he suffered a serious knee injury that left him unable to play for almost two years.

Dismissing concerns that his career was over, Ronaldo returned to competitive play in 2001. At the 2002 World Cup he was the tournament’s top scorer, with eight goals, and helped Brazil win its fifth World Cup championship.

He then announced that he was leaving Inter for Real Madrid of Spain. After much wrangling, Real agreed to pay a transfer fee of about $46.3 million. In 2002 Ronaldo was named both FIFA Player of the Year and European Footballer of the Year (an award he also had received in 1997).

At the 2006 World Cup he scored three goals to bring his career total at the tournament to a record-setting 15 (a mark that was broken in 2014 by Germany’s Miroslav Klose).

While playing for the Italian powerhouse AC Milan in 2008, Ronaldo ruptured a tendon in his left knee—the same type of injury that had occurred in his right knee in 1999—which some thought would put his career in jeopardy.

In December 2008 a fully recovered Ronaldo signed with Corinthians in São Paulo . However, he continued to be plagued by a number of other, less significant, leg injuries during his tenure with Corinthians as well as by a thyroid condition that caused him to gain weight, and he abruptly retired from the sport in February 2011.

In 2018 Ronaldo became the majority owner of the Spanish club Real Valladolid, and in 2021 he purchased a stake in Cruzeiro, where he had played early in his career. In 2024 he said that he would sell his holdings in both clubs.

His exploits for Sporting CP brought him into prominence and some of the biggest clubs in England like Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United started courting him.

Cristiano Ronaldo played in a UEFA Champions League against Manchester United, in 2003. The manager of the English club Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed by his performance and brought him to the club in the same year. In his first season at Manchester United, Ronaldo scored three goals in the league and also scored in the FA Cup final to help the club win the trophy. A year after joining Manchester United, Ronaldo scored two goals in the European Championships for Portugal as the team ended runners up on home soil.

Cristiano Ronaldo became one of Manchester United’s most important players during his six-year stint at the club and during that time the club became one of the most successful clubs in Europe as it won three league titles on the trot as well as the UEFA Champions League in 2008. Ronaldo scored 84 goals for the club in 196 league games and became one of the best players in the world.

At the 2006 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo was an integral part of the Portuguese national team as they reached the semifinal of the tournament; Ronaldo scored one goal in the tournament. The following year he was named the captain of the national team but in the European Championships that followed the next year, he scored only one goal as the team crashed out in the quarter-finals.

In 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo became the most expensive player in the world after Spanish giant Real Madrid paid Manchester United £80 million to bring him to Madrid. He scored 33 goals in his very first season. In the following season, he ended the Spanish league season with 40 goals, which became a record in the league’s history and helped Real Madrid win the Copa del Rey.

Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal at the Football World Cup in South Africa in 2010, but he had a quiet tournament, scoring only one goal as the team was knocked out by Spain in the round of 16. In 2012, he was the main inspiration for the team as he scored three goals to lead the team to the semifinal of the European Championships but Portugal was knocked out by Spain yet again in a penalty shootout.

In 2012, Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win the Spanish league title and it proved to be his first league title with the club. He scored 60 goals in all competitions in the season as Real Madrid cantered to the title with 100 points. He followed it up with a haul of 55 goals in all competitions the following season.

The season that started in 2013, was a particularly special one for Ronaldo as he scored a staggering 51 goals in the season and at the same time helped Real Madrid win their coveted 10th UEFA Champions League title. In the Champions League, Ronaldo scored 17 goals which made him the highest scorer ever in a single season of the tournament. He has a total of 89 goals in the tournament overall.

In the 2014 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo had a disappointing tournament as Portugal was knocked out in the first round with him scoring only one goal. He has scored 50 goals for Portugal in his career and that is the highest for any Portuguese player. In the league seasons that started that year, Ronaldo was in sublime form as he notched up 61 goals in total and also became the fastest player to reach the 200-goal milestone in the Spanish league. He reached it in 178 games.

He captained Portugal in their 2016 Euro Cup campaign and led them to victory. In the final against France, he got injured and was stretchered off the pitch after just 25 minutes but ultimately Portugal went on to win the match. Ronaldo was awarded the Silver Boot as he was the joint second-highest goalscorer in the tournament.

In the 2018 World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo became the oldest player ever to score a hat-trick in a World Cup match. He scored a hat-trick against Spain. Portugal progressed to the last 16 and was eliminated following a 2–1 defeat to Uruguay. Nevertheless, he earned his name in the World Cup Dream Team for his performance during the tournament.

After the World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo made his first appearance in the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals where he scored a hat-trick against Switzerland in the semi-finals. In September 2019, during the Euro 2020 qualifying match, he delivered 4 goals against Lithuania, resulting in a 5–1 for Portugal. He also set the record for most goals in the European Qualifiers. In October, he scored his 700th senior career goal against Ukraine in a 2–1 loss in a Euro 2020 qualifier.

In November 2019, he went on to score his 99th international goal against Luxembourg in a 2-0 win which advanced Portugal to the UEFA Euro 2020. He went on to score his 100th and 101st international goals in a 2020–21 UEFA Nations League match against Sweden.

In June 2021, he gave 2 goals against Hungary in the first game of Euro 2020, bringing his total to 11 European Championship goals. He went on to score 2 penalty shots against France in a 2-2 draw. Portugal later suffered a defeat against Belgium and was eliminated from the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo won the Golden Boot for his performance in the competition.

In September 2021 in a World Cup qualifier, Cristiano Ronaldo delivered 2 goals against the Republic of Ireland in a 2–1 win. In October, he scored an opening goal in a 3-0 win against Qatar. With his 181st international appearance, he set the record for the most international caps received by a European player. Later, he contributed 3 goals against Luxembourg in a 5-0 win.

Expectedly, he was named in Portugal's squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In November, he delivered a penalty goal against Ghana. However, he was substituted against South Korea in the last group game. He was later dropped from the opening line-up but later returned to the field as Portugal registered their 6–1 win record. However, Portugal later lost to Morocco in a 1-0 match and the latter advanced to the World Cup semi-finals.

Post-World Cup, he was named in Portugal’s squad for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg. Later, in the match against Liechtenstein, Portugal took home victory in a 4-0 win.

Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Ballon D’Or (later known as the FIFA World Player of the Year Award) in 2008 when he was a Manchester United player.

In 2013, he won the FIFA World Player of the Year Award and won it again the following year.

Ronaldo

Who Is Ronaldo?

Ronaldo established himself as an unstoppable scorer for European soccer teams in the mid-1990s. He bounced back from a disappointing finish to the 1998 World Cup and a series of knee injuries to lead Brazil to victory in the 2002 World Cup, and retired in 2011 as one of the game's all-time greats.

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima was born on September 18, 1976, in Itaguaí, Brazil. His parents, Nélio Nazário de Lima and Sônia dos Santos Barata, separated when he was 11, and Ronaldo dropped out of school shortly afterward to pursue a soccer career.

Ronaldo joined the Social Ramos indoor soccer team at the age of 12 before moving on to São Cristóvão, where he was discovered by his future agents, Reinaldo Pitta and Alexandre Martins. The two arranged for the sale of their new client's contract to Cruzeiro, a professional club in the city of Belo Horizonte.

Professional Soccer Player

Ronaldo showcased his impressive goal-scoring ability for Cruzeiro, helping the club to its first Brazil Cup championship in 1993. The talented 17-year-old was named to the Brazilian national team for the 1994 World Cup in the United States, though he watched from the bench as his countrymen won the Cup.

Ronaldo hit the ground running when his contract was sold to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1994, averaging nearly a goal per game against top-notch European competition. Two years with PSV Eindhoven were followed by one with FC Barcelona and then a move to Inter Milan, a four-year period in which Ronaldo twice won FIFA World Player of the Year and carried his teams to victory in the Dutch and Spanish Super Cups.

During his peak, Ronaldo possessed an unstoppable combination of speed and power, equally capable of plowing through defenders as he was of nimbly sidestepping their attacks and accelerating away. Adding to his aura was an aversion to practicing and training hard, an attitude that did little to stem his dominance.

Big things were expected from Ronaldo and Brazil in the 1998 World Cup in France, but while he was named the Golden Ball winner as the Cup's best player, the tournament ended on a sour note when Ronaldo suffered a convulsive fit before the final and was ineffective in a 3-0 loss to the host country. Bigger setbacks followed when Ronaldo ruptured a knee tendon in November 1999 and reinjured the knee five months later, knocking him out of action for almost two years.

Ronaldo made a triumphant return in time for the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, netting eight goals to win the Golden Boot Award as the Cup's top scorer while leading Brazil its fifth world championship. Ronaldo transferred to Real Madrid that fall, winning the FIFA World Player of the Year Award a third time before leading his new club to La Liga and Spanish Super Cup championships in 2003.

Ronaldo appeared in one final World Cup for Brazil in 2006. Although Brazil was bounced in the quarterfinals by France, Ronaldo scored three times to set a record with 15 career goals in World Cup play.

Ronaldo transferred to AC Milan in 2007, but in 2008 he sustained another serious knee injury and his contract was not renewed after the season. The Brazilian legend returned to his home country in 2009 to play for Corinthians, helping them to victories in the Campeonato Paulista league and Brazil Cup that year, before announcing his retirement in February 2011.

Post-Career and Legacy

Ronaldo is recognized as one of the best soccer players in history. In 2004, he was named to the FIFA 100, a list of the greatest living players compiled by the legendary Pelé, and in 2010, he was deemed Goal.com's "Player of the Decade."

Often criticized for not training hard as a pro athlete, Ronaldo set himself up for an active post-playing career by founding 9ine, a sports marketing agency. He also joined the organizing committees for the Brazil-based 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, ensuring that he would remain an influential figure in Brazilian sports and international affairs for years to come.

Controversies
In 2005, he was arrested for allegedly raping two women at a London hotel suite. Later, the case was dropped by Scotland Yard.

On 27 September 2018, he was accused of raping a woman named Kathryn Mayorga in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009. On 10 June 2022, the federal civil case against him was dismissed. The judge cited that an attorney for accuser Kathryn Mayorga engaged in misconduct. Mayorga said that she was forced into signing a nondisclosure agreement and $375,000 settlement following the alleged rape.

After his son Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. was born in 2010, he didn't reveal the identity of his son's mother due to which he was heavily criticized in the media. Later, it was reported that he had one-night stand with a penniless American waitress who became pregnant and gave birth to his son, and Ronaldo had to pay a £10 million paternity bill.

In 2017, he was banned for five games following his red card in Real Madrid's first-leg victory over Barcelona. The band included one-game ban for the red card, and four games for pushing referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea as he was leaving the field.

In 2019, he was fined almost 19 million euros ($21.6 million) for tax fraud. He paid the amount to avoid a 23-month prison sentence.

In October 2024, some reported claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo had been sentenced to receive 99 lashes for hugging Fatemeh Hamami, a disabled Iranian artist. Ronaldo embraced the disabled artist after receiving two portraits of himself from her in Tehran ahead of Al-Nassr's AFC Champions League match against Persepolis. Later, the Iranian embassy in Madrid denied the reports, and Hamami expressed her anger over the false reports.

In February 2024, he received a one-match suspension after he made an alleged offensive gesture during a Saudi Pro League game while playing for Al Nassr. After Al Nassr defeated Al-Shabab, Ronaldo was spotted cupping his ear and repeatedly thrusting his hand forward near his pelvis, which was an alleged gesture aimed at Al-Shabab fans who were chanting "Messi."

In April 2024, he was banned for two games after receiving his first red card in Saudi Arabia for elbowing an opponent in a match between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal in the Saudi Super Cup semifinals.

He won his first title, FA Cup, in 2004, and reputed BBC sports analyst Alex Hansen commented,

“We still have to remember, of course, that the lad is only 19 years of age. Considering that, you have to say he has got massive talent. His feet are mesmerising at times, and if he can couple that with some consistently good crossing, the future looks frightening.” [9] BBC

Coach Alex was also in awe of his phenomenal talent and commented about his debut game,

“You always play your best players and the opening game of the season [against Bolton – United would go on to win 4-0], he was a substitute, he came on and he was absolutely bloody fantastic.” [11] Goal Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United training facility

During his career, Ronaldo received multiple injuries and had to undergo ankle surgery in 2008, which kept him out of the sport for nearly 70 days. Then, he had a major injury again in 2016 when his collateral ligament was ruptured. In one match for his country against the Czech Republic, he got a bleeding nose after colliding with the opponent’s goalkeeper. He received a cut just above his left eye while playing for Real Madrid against Deportivo La Coruna in 2018; he received the injury by a defender’s boot.

Controversies

Choosing water and removing coca-cola.

Before the Euro Cup 2020, while attending a press conference, he replaced the bottles of Coca-Cola from the table with a bottle of water, signalling that he preferred mineral water over aerated drinks. This caused the company a loss of around $4 billion and a 1.6% drop in its share price. Later, some other football players also enacted the same thing during their press conferences, and some even played it like a joke. Following this, the company issued a statement,

“Players are offered water, alongside Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, on arrival at our press conferences. Everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” as people have different “tastes and needs.” [15] Hindustan Times

Rape Allegations

In 2009, a former American model named Kathryn Mayorga accused Ronaldo of raping her; however, in 2010, both reached an out-of-court settlement; she was paid $375,000 to remain silent. In 2018, the case was reopened following which Ronaldo filed a defamation case against her. In a statement, Ronaldo said,

“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in. Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense. My clear conscious [sic] will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.” [16] BBC

In 2019, the Clark County District Attorney’s office in Las Vegas acquitted him of any crimes and issued a statement,

“Based upon a review of the information presented at this time, the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.” [17] Twitter- Clark County DA

First Son, Cristiano Jr.

In 2010, Ronaldo announced that he was blessed with a son named Cristiano Jr. (nickname – Cristianinho, or little Cristiano); however, he did not reveal the identity of the woman. He said,

“It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy. As agreed with the baby’s mother, who prefers to have her identity kept confidential, my son will be under my exclusive guardianship” [18] nowtolove

When asked about his son’s mother on a popular talk show with Jonathan Ross, he said,

“People speculate I was with this girl or another, or there was a surrogate mother,” he told chat show host Jonathan Ross. I have never told anyone and never will. When Cristiano [Junior] is going to grow up, I am always going to say the truth to him because he deserves it, because he is my son, but I am not going to say because people want me to say.” [19] jonathanrossshow – youtube

Following the announcement, many media sources doubted whether the boy was born through surrogacy, and many media houses reported this as a piece of controversy. Reportedly, he gave $15.28 million for exclusive rights over his son and his mother helped him to get his son. Sources close to him said he will disclose the identity of his mother to Cristiano Jr on his 18th birthday. [20] Hindustan Times

Fights with Media

During Euro 2016, Ronaldo once threw the mic of a journalist from the Portuguese news channel CMTV when the journalist questioned him about his preparedness for a match. [21] BeanymanSports – YouTube In 2021, Pascal Ferré, France Football editor-in-chief, reported that Ronaldo wanted to win more Ballon d’Or titles than his rival Messi before retirement following which Ronaldo took to Instagram where he wrote,

“Today’s ending explains why Pascal Ferré’s statements last week, stating that I confided in him that I had as my sole ambition to finish my career with more Ballon d’Or than Lionel Messi. Pascal Ferré lied, used my name to promote himself and to promote the publication he works for. It is unacceptable that the person responsible for awarding such a prestigious award can lie in this manner, in absolute disrespect for someone who has always respected France Football and the Ballon d’Or.” [22] Instagram

Fight with Wayne Rooney at FIFA World Cup 2006

During the world cup quarterfinal match in 2006, Ronaldo received criticism for his aggressive appeal to the referee to give a red card to England’s star player Rooney who played alongside him at his club Manchester United. This caused England to lose the match, and Ronaldo was seen winking after getting his fellow player out of the game. [23] Ronaldo vs Rooney – YouTube

“There was heavy backlash from press however Rooney said, After I was sent off in the World Cup quarter-final against Portugal and we lost on penalties, I got Ronaldo out into the tunnel. I said: ‘Listen, you’re going to get a lot of stick from the press, I’m going to get a lot of stick from the press, my focus now is on Man United. There is no issue with me whatsoever, I would have done exactly the same trying to get England a win against Portugal and this is a big year for us and we have every chance of winning the league. My attention, once we were out, completely flipped back to Manchester United.” [24] Manchester Evening News

Tax Evasion Fiasco

He pleaded guilty to charges of tax evasion from 2009-2018; however, his lawyers argued that it happened since he did not understand Spanish laws clearly. He had to pay $21.6 million, and he narrowly escaped jail term as he was sentenced to 23 months in prison; however, he served his sentence under probation as Spanish law allows first-time offenders to serve a sentence under probation if he/she receives a sentence of less than 2 years. [25] The Economic Times

Controversy over Israel and Palestine

When he was at Juventus in 2019, he was snapped alongside Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz. His fans from Palestine lambasted him for posing alongside the Israeli Foreign Minister and gifting him his T-Shirt as earlier, he had expressed his solidarity with Palestine and, reportedly, donated money for children of that region. “He invited me to come and see him. He had some trouble in his life last few months ago and a friend of his sent him some of my videos and he said he had watched them and then he read one of my books and found them very helpful and he wanted to talk so I went to his house and we talked for about 2 hours and he showed me all of his equipment for keeping him in tip-top condition and we talked a bit about his companies and but mostly we talked about what he wanted in the future and some of the obstacles he’s facing while pursuing that and so we had a strategic conversation about those topics for about 90 minutes.” [28] Skynews – jordan
