Towards an Enhanced Implementation of Printed Modular Distance Learning in the Philippines: A Meta-Synthesis
Implementing modular distance learning (MDL) in the Philippines remains problematic. We review studies on printed MDL to create themes for its enhanced implementation. A meta-synthesis of qualitative studies was executed, and a comprehensive search in Google Scholar was conducted. A thematic synthesis was performed, revealing the four presences to enhance the implementation of printed MDL, such as: structural; community; intervention; and quality assurance. The structural presence underscores module designs that can capture students' interests and learning, as well as module content that can articulate curricular learning competencies and students' context, needs, and situations. The community presence highlights that education in the MDL is not the sole responsibility of students. Contrary to the common idea that MDL is about providing modules for students to study independently, MDL is everyone's responsibility. The family members and teachers, as well as community members and sectors, have roles to play and must work together to produce more desirable learning outcomes. The intervention presence emphasizes instructional and socio-emotional support to help students overcome academic and personal difficulties and foster a positive and supportive learning atmosphere. Quality assurance presence highlights the systematic actions in the planning, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation processes to ensure the MDL's quality implementation and continuous improvement. The provision of quality includes meeting stakeholders' needs and conforming to desired outcomes or standards. Hence, education officials may adopt the identified presences for the orientation and training activities to enhance the implementation of MDL.

Effect of Modular Distance Learning Approach to Academic Performance in Mathematics of Students in Mindanao State University-Sulu Senior High School Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

This study investigated the instructional competencies of teachers in The existence of COVID-19 pandemic brought extraordinary challenges to the stakeholders, teachers, parents, and students. Thus, the researcher believed that there is an effect of teaching-learning process in new normal education to students’ performance most especially using modular type of learning in Mathematics. With this, the study sought to determine the perception of the students regarding modular distance learning approach (MDLA) in Mathematics, identify the challenges of the students, examine the effect of MDLA to academic performance of students in Mathematics, determine the level of academic performance of students, determine the significant difference on perceptions when they grouped according to their gender and age, and determine the relationship of students’ perceptions regarding MDLA to their academic performance in Mathematics. The descriptive research design was utilized in this study. The researcher gathered one hundred seventy eight (178) grade 11 STEM students currently enrolled in MSU-Sulu Senior High School through the use of purposive random sampling. The survey questionnaire was applied in the study. Mean, frequency counts and percentage, t-test for independent samples, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and person product-moment correlation were used to analyze and interpret the data. Based on the result, the study revealed that students’ perceptions agreed on using modular distance learning approach (MDLA). It means the students had positive perceptions regarding MDLA in Mathematics. The study also revealed that students agreed on using modular distance learning approach (MDLA) in Math have little challenges. It had also a positive effect to students’ performance in which students performed very satisfactory in Mathematics which means they had good quality performance. However, the study also revealed that it has no significant difference on their perceptions when they are grouped by gender and age which means the students had the same perceptions.

As COVID-19 forced schools to shift to distance learning, the modular approach, in particular, became the most viable option for the continuity of learning. However, these sudden changes also brought unique experiences to novice teachers. This study explored the lived experiences of novice secondary school English teachers (NSSET) in Tagum City in implementing modular distance learning (MDL) in the context of the pandemic. Phenomenological inquiry based on Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory was used to explain the experiences of the eight (8) participants. Using validated researcher-made interview questions, virtual in-depth interviews were conducted. Through Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-step framework, themes that emerged, categorized into five echelons, are as follows: poor cooperation of parents and students, and productive collaboration with colleagues and immediate heads; overwhelming pressure from external sources, and taking direction from others' influence; perpetual communication breakdown, and confronting challenges in the delivery of modular learning; meeting society's expectations; abrupt adjustment to the new normal. These shape the experiences of the NSSET in conducting MDL in the new normal. However, the poor cooperation of parents and students poses the most significant experience for the NSSET. Notwithstanding, novice teachers navigated successfully through these experiences brought about by implementing MDL amid the pandemic.

Pros and Cons of Modular Distance Learning (MDL) as a Student
Modular Distance Learning (MDL) has become increasingly popular among students, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This article aims to explore the pros and cons of MDL from a student's perspective. One of the main advantages of MDL is its flexibility. Students have the freedom to learn at their own pace and can access course materials anytime, anywhere. This allows for better time management and the ability to balance other commitments such as work or family responsibilities. Another benefit of MDL is the opportunity for personalized learning. With online platforms and resources, students can tailor their learning experience to their individual needs and preferences. They can choose the topics they want to focus on, review materials as many times as needed, and engage in interactive discussions with peers and instructors. However, there are also some drawbacks to MDL. One major challenge is the lack of face-to-face interaction. Traditional classroom settings provide opportunities for students to engage in discussions, ask questions, and receive immediate feedback. In MDL, this interaction is limited to virtual platforms, which may not be as effective for some students. Another disadvantage is the potential for distractions. Studying from home or any other location can be challenging due to various distractions like noise, household chores, or personal devices. This can hinder concentration and impact the overall learning experience. In conclusion, MDL offers flexibility and personalized learning opportunities for students. However, it also presents challenges such as limited face-to-face interaction and potential distractions. In the Philippines, attempting to push through education despite the fatal pandemic caused by Covid-19 has proven to be a difficult undertaking. Despite several objections, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) accepted and implemented the flexible model of blended learning, despite the risk of open courses due to the virus. Modular (Printed), Modular (Digital), Online, Educational TV, Radio-Based Instruction, Home Schooling, and Blended Learning is the many learning modes. Using the systematic review, the study aims to determine the main educational experiences that used the Modular Distance Learning approach for the promotion of educational knowledge within the Higher Education stage. Modular Distance Learning is implemented for those living in rural areas or provinces where internet connection is only available for a few. The usage of Modules created by teachers with various tasks and learning activities based on the fundamental learning abilities is known as modular distance learning. Thus, the main findings of the study revealed that the implementation of modular distance learning or distance education resulted in a significant improvement in students’ knowledge of the specific content covered, despite the fact that both technical and non-technical problems occur during their teaching in distance learning.
