Research Interests

Gender differences in language use

Research Summary

Conversations between women and men can be regarded, metaphorically, as cross-cultural communication. Boys and girls learn ways of speaking as children at play with other children of the same sex, with the result that as adults men and women have different senses of how to use language in interaction. Differences include physical orientation (in informal conversations, women tend to sit face to face and lean toward each other, while men tend to sit at angles or parallel and look around the room); women tend to give more listener cues, such as “mhm, yeah, uhuh.” Both these patterns result in women feeling men aren’t listening and, in the case of listener cues, men feeling women are rushing them along; women tend to value having their experience validated while men tend to focus more quickly on what actions they should take. All these patterns, and many more, differ by cultural background as well as gender. Understanding how gender differences in communication affect doctor-patient interaction is crucial to understanding and improving diagnosis, outcomes and compliance in interactions in medical contexts.

Graduate Programs

phd linguistics georgetown

Our two graduate programs stress the development of analytical, scholarly, and creative abilities through small seminars; formal pedagogical training is also a key component. Graduate students (both domestic and international) are encouraged to present their work at scholarly meetings and to publish in refereed media, often in collaboration with faculty members. The Department has had considerable success in placing its graduates in tenure-track jobs in many major educational institutions in the United States and abroad.

The Department works with  The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to support new students entering our doctoral programs every year in Linguistics and Literature and Cultural Studies. All fellows entering the doctoral programs receive a stipend, health insurance, and a tuition waiver for five years. You can apply  here . Please note that to be eligible for a fellowship you must apply directly to the Ph.D. Program. A previous MA or MS is not required to apply directly to the Ph.D. program.

The Spanish Linguistics program, one of the strongest in the U.S., includes courses in Applied Linguistics, Semantics, Pragmatics, Syntax, Phonology, Dialectology, Lexicography, Textual Edition, Corpus Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics. The program is offered in close collaboration with the Department of Linguistics.

Our program in Literature and Cultural Studies emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach in which attention to primary texts and critical theory is combined with audiovisual, historical, and philosophical perspectives so that students can develop their research skills to the fullest. Our faculty cover all traditional areas – Medieval, Early Modern, Modern Spain, Colonial Latin America, Modern Latin America, and Luso-Brazilian Studies – as well as less traditional or emerging fields such as Transatlantic/Transpacific Studies, and Film and Media Studies.

As Barron Trump college choice looms, here's where his family graduated (and who didn't)

Donald trump graduated from the university of pennsylvania. melania trump attended slovenia's oldest university but dropped out to pursue modeling..

phd linguistics georgetown

  • Barron Trump, the only son of Donald Trump and Melania Trump, spent much of his childhood in New York.
  • Trump and his children have many ties to the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
  • Trump University or Trump U was a real estate program from 2005 to 2010. It was not an actual university.

Now that Barron Trump is a class of 2024 high school graduate, what's next for the youngest son of Donald Trump?

Barron Trump, the only child of former president Donald Trump and former first lady Melania Trump, received his high school diploma May 17, 2024, from Oxbridge Academy near West Palm Beach, Florida. Will Barron Trump go to college? The former first couple has not said much.

One possibility could be New York University in Manhattan, where Barron Trump spent much of his childhood — and lived until his father was sworn in as the 45th president in early 2017.

Trump said on Fox News this month that Barron had been accepted "everywhere" he applied, adding the recent high school graduate is "very sought after from the standpoint he's a very smart guy."

Almost a year ago,  Donald Trump  said  his youngest son , then a senior at Oxbridge Academy, was “thinking” about the University of Pennsylvania, from where the former president graduated and studied at the Wharton School.

In fact, Barron Trump's half-siblings — Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump (born to Donald Trump and Ivana Trump) and Tiffany Trump (born to Donald Trump and Marla Maples) — have ties to the University of Pennsylvania or Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Where did the Trump family attend college? Here's a roundup.

They do! Memories of Donald & Melania Trump's wedding in Palm Beach, reception at Mar-a-Lago

Where will Barron Trump attend college?

As of Thursday, June 13, it has not been announced where Barron Trump, the youngest son of former president Donald Trump and former first lady Melania Trump, will attend college. Barron Trump graduated May 17, 2024, from Oxbridge Academy near West Palm Beach, Florida.

Where did Donald Trump attend college?

Donald Trump graduated from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in May 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics.

Where did Melania Trump attend college?

Melania Trump, the former first lady of the U.S. from 2016 to 2020, briefly attended college, but never graduated. Then Melania Knauss, the Slovenian "began modeling at age 16, and two years later she signed on with an agency in Milan. She enrolled at the University of Ljubljana but dropped out after one year to pursue her modeling career," according to the Melania Trump bio on biography.com .

In her early days of modeling, the site states, Melania Trump worked in Milan and Paris before moving to New York in 1996. She met future husband Donald Trump two years later at a New York fashion party. (The Trumps were engaged in 2004 and married in 2005.)

Melania Trump, then known professionally as Melania Knauss, appeared on the covers of Harper's Bazaar (Bulgaria edition), Vanity Fair (Italy edition), GQ (for which she posed nude in January 2000) and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue .

The University of Ljubljana , or UL, is the oldest and largest university in Slovenia.

Where did Donald Trump Jr. attend college?

Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000. Like his father, Donald Trump Jr. has a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Finance.

Where did Eric Trump attend college?

Eric Trump graduated from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor's degree in finance and management in 2006.

Where did Ivanka Trump attend college?

According to a March 2017 story in the Georgetown Voice , Donald Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, was a student at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., but transferred after two years to the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Ivanka Trump graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in economics from Penn in 2004.

Where did Tiffany Trump attend college?

Like her father, Tiffany Trump attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. Four years later, Tiffany Trump graduated from Georgetown Law School as part of the class of 2020. Like many class of 2020 seniors (for high school and college), Tiffany Trump's college graduation was a virtual commencement ceremony because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is Trump University?

Trump University or Trump U was a real estate program that ran from 2005 to 2010.

According to an April 2018 USA TODAY story , "Trump University was not an actual university but a for-profit seminar series, and former students waged a years-long battle claiming the course misled them with claims of teaching real estate success." That same month, a federal judge finalized a $25 million settlement between then-President Trump and students of his shuttered Trump University.

The order marked the end of two class-action lawsuits and a civil lawsuit from New York. Trump had entered settlement talks days after the 2016 election and in April 2018 agreed to pay the millions under terms that let him admit no wrongdoing, USA TODAY reported.

“The alumni community has been there for me through 9/11, loss of jobs, loss of fellow alumni, loss of my father and a career transition from accountant to film producer. I believe it is my duty to return that favor. I also want to remind fellow alumni about the special place we called home in our formative years. I want to make sure alumni feel like they still have a voice especially beyond the Commonwealth of Virginia and traditional careers. They should feel heard and supported by their alma mater and fellow alums. I have friends from the class of 1960 to 2027 (friends’ kids). As a member of the alumni board, I want to work so that every alum feels the love I have for this school and I want that bond to strengthen from the day they graduate for the rest of their life.”

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve on the WMAA Board of Directors to help the organization realize its vision to ‘…create opportunities to strengthen bonds between each other and alma mater….’ I hope to offer my skills, experience, and passion to the board to drive an increase in alumni engagement with students so that we can help illuminate their paths towards leadership and service in the communities they will join after graduation. The first step towards that goal will be learning how alumni are already engaging with students and helping to define ways WMAA can build on and amplify those efforts for all time coming.”

Title: 3D Human Body Modeling

Location : Hackerman B17

Abstract: Understanding the actions of humans is important for a range of applications: Surveillance, human-computer or human-robot interaction, or sign language understanding.  Even before the availability of 3D sensors, analysis-by-synthesis approaches used 3D human body models. With the availability of 3D sensors, inferring and using 3D models of the human body became the standard. In this talk, I will start from the basics of 3D vision: Acquisition, representation, and inferring 3D from monocular images. Then I will move on to 3D human body models; recent work on human pose and shape estimation. I will introduce work on human motion modeling and conclude with how these use LLMs for human motion synthesis.
