Nursing Courses

A registered nurse is someone who assists their patient through medical treatment. They continually monitor their patients to see if there are any changes in their conditions, collaborating with physicians and other health professionals to understand what is the best course of action.

This information is then used to create a nurse caring plan, which identifies what the patient needs while also taking into account what they may need in the future. They may also need to support the patient’s family as well, providing them with instructions on what to do for them outside of care facilities.

The average salary for a new registered nurse is $47,000 per annum. Nurses with three to five years of practical experience earn from $54,000 to $68,000, with senior nurses can earn between $68,000 and $114,000.

Where does a nurse work?

Nurses don’t always have to work in typical healthcare settings. There are several career opportunities for nurses at schools, at their patient’s home, community centres, government agencies and research facilities.

How do you become a nurse?

The most common pathway for a registered nurse is to go to university, polytechnic or institute of technology to complete a three year Bachelor of Nursing. If that’s not an option, then another possibility is to complete a bachelor’s degree, preferably in health science, and then a Master of Nursing, which usually takes two years.

All of these must be approved by the New Zealand Nursing Council. Nursing students will also need to be registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, pass the Nursing Council assessment, a master’s degree approved by the Council and four years of experience in a particular area of nursing practice.

There’s also the option of becoming an enrolled nurse if you don’t want to become a registered one, which involves taking a Nursing Council-approved Diploma of Enrolled Nursing from a polytechnic or institute of technology. The main difference between an enrolled nurse and a registered nurse is that the former has less authority and responsibilities while the latter takes on more of a supervisory role.

UC's Master of Health Sciences (Nursing) programme is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. If you want to make a difference in the lives of others in your community and you're looking for an exciting career that builds on your critical thinking skills, nursing could be a great choice for you. Find out about studying Nursing at UC.

The Master of Health Sciences (Nursing) prepares you to sit for the Nursing Council of New Zealand State Final Examination in just two years. Passing the examinationthen enables you to apply for registration as a nurse. With nurses in high demand, nursing is a stable career path that offers excellent opportunities both in Aoteroa New Zealand and overseas.

UC’s Master of Health Science (Nursing) is a blended programme that combines online learning modules with onsite clinical placements, enabling students to enhance their critical learning thinking skills, develop clinical knowledge, and grow their career. Clinical experience of 1100 hours is offered throughout the programme with a consolidated block at the end.

Who is this initiative designed for?

This postgraduate programme is ideal for students who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree in a health related discipline. It is a great option for both those looking to make a career change into nursing or looking to progress their nursing career by continuing to build on prior health or science knowledge or experience.

*If you do not have a heath-related degree, or it has been some time since you studied, we are happy to discuss study pathways with you.

The degree will be of interest to anyone seeking a challenging yet rewarding and fulfilling career in healthcare.

Why choose UC for nursing?

UC’s Faculty of Health | Te Kaupeka Oranga provides the opportunity to learn from an experienced, highly skilled nursing team and passionate researchers who are leaders in their field. The Faculty works closely with students to provide personal support and guidance that fosters their career goals and aspirations.

As a major tertiary learning institution, UC offers access to a wide variety of clinical placements within Canterbury and beyond. Students will undertake more than 1100 hours of clinical learning across a range of different practice settings that will not only help them become well-rounded, but will also help inform their decisions when choosing where they want to focus in their career.

UC nursing students will also undertake simulated learning via the Simulation Centre at the Manawa campus, where they can acquire skills and build confidence without the high pressure and risk of a fast-paced clinical environment.

The Master of Health Science (Nursing) is underpinned by UC’s values of manaakitanga (extending care and empowering others), whanaungatanga (valuing people and working as a team), and tiakitanga (enhancing and nurturing our resources). These philosophies help produce nursing graduates that are socially conscious, critical thinkers who contribute to the advancement of nursing knowledge, policy, and health outcomes.

Career opportunities

Having successfully completed the MHealSc(Nursing) programme, graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and seek employment as registered nurses in New Zealand. Bachelor of Nursing

There’s never been a better time to get into nursing. New Zealand-trained nurses are in demand here and around the world.

You’ll be in high demand with NorthTec’s unique and comprehensive Bachelor of Nursing. Learn the clinical and interpersonal skills to work in a range of healthcare settings, from hospitals to community-based organisations. You will complete clinical placements here in Northland, and learn through a blend of classroom and online study, preparing you to become a Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of NZ.

The NorthTec curriculum challenges you to go beyond traditional health and illness care to focus on creating a supportive environment for health and wellbeing. You will learn how to assess health needs, advise and support people to manage their health, and practice nursing both independently and in collaboration with other health professionals.

You will be able to perform general nursing functions and also delegate to and direct Enrolled Nurses. You will be skilled at developing, implementing and evaluating integrated health care plans in a range of settings and in partnership with individuals, whānau and communities. Your teaching will also ensure that you can demonstrate attributes of a reflective practitioner and understand the importance of self-care and ongoing professional supervision.

Clinical Experience

Students will be required to attend clinical placements throughout the Bachelor of Nursing programme. These placements may occur anywhere in the Northland region (students will need to reside in the Northland region). The student will be responsible for all travel and accommodation expenses incurred when undertaking a clinical placement outside of their home locality. The Nursing Council of New Zealand requires each student to complete a minimum of 1100 clinical hours in a variety of clinical placements prior to completion of the programme.

Programme aim

The key aim of this programme is to produce competent nurses suitable for registration as Registered Nurses following successful achievement of the NCNZ state final Examination. The programme has been designed to prepare a nurse who can practice at a beginning level in a variety of clinical settings and meet NCNZ competencies for entry to the Register of Registered Nurses.

The Bachelor of Nursing is a progressive sequence of six semesters of study, totalling three years for a full-time student. Students wishing to study part-time should discuss with the Nursing Pathway Manager. There is a Nursing Council requirement for you to complete your degree within five years.

How you will learn

This programme is a blend of classroom, face-to-face teaching and e-learning. All face-to-face classes, except for the clinical placements, are delivered at the NorthTec Raumanga campus only and students are required to attend these onsite classes. Classes are generally timetabled on consecutive days, two-three days per week during the theory aspects of the semester. Students will need to reside in the Northland region.

All theory courses have course content online that is designed to provide the student with some learning flexibility to study from home. There are weekly requirements for each course and the student can decide what time of the day or how many hours they spend online to reinforce their understanding of the content and to work on their assessments.

This is a full-time course which means 36+ hours per week will be required to achieve the weekly learning requirements.

Also 50% of every New Zealand nursing program must be hands-on. This means experience in a clinical setting with real patients so you will have placements every semester to attend which may include rostered shiftwork.

Note that students may request, however, the use of a ‘reader/writer’ for exams in the instance of temporary disability.

Workforce Restrictions for Children's Workforce

The Children's Act 2014 was part of a series of comprehensive measures brought in to protect and improve the wellbeing of vulnerable children. English Language Requirements

Applicants where English is not their first language are required to provide evidence that they have achieved an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with not less than 6.5 in each, or in exceptional circumstances a pass in another equivalent test of English.

One of the main things about being able to care for our people is allowing them to live in that space and be themselves in that space. Studies have proven that a person gets better quicker when you are able to look after them holistically. So you’re looking at the person as a whole and not just the condition."

MIT is full of diversity, and when you're surrounded by such diverse people, you learn a lot, and you get a different perspective on things.

The curriculum has been great, but it's the people who have made my MIT experience exceptional. When I initially got here, I was scared people would be reserved and solely focused on their academics. I've been astonished. The friends I've met here are my new family.

Nursing rewards me constantly. I'm learning and developing faster than I ever imagined. I feel wonderful when my patients recover and when I comfort grieving family members. I love being a nurse because I connect and help people at their most vulnerable, unexpected times. It is the most different feeling when you heal a person. Helping others feels good, and I get compensated for it. It's my dream job.

I studied full-time with 2 kids as well as working. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Age is just the number.

If you dream to achieve something, MIT is the place to make that dream come true. MIT is your future, where you may study from the ground and then rise into the sky."

After graduating high school, I went straight into studies at MIT. I chose MIT after attending a high school career day. I enjoyed the event and the learning spaces at MIT. The course itself was a challenge. Managing school, personal life and mental health was also a challenge. But I overcame it with the support of my family, friends I made at MIT, and the support services at MIT. Lecturers took time out of their lunch breaks and sometimes even outside of working hours to draw up mind maps and summarise content for us, which really helped a lot. The people make MIT unique - most definitely. The diversity of cultures I got to learn about and be friends with was amazing. My qualification has most definitely helped me in my career. I still use some content from my classes to help me remember the whys in my current job. My advice is to attend every lecture, and if you cannot make it – always make the time to go and do some self-learning. Find YOUR way of learning.”
