Hogwarts Legacy Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 Walkthrough

Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 is the thirty-first main quest in Hogwarts Legacy. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 Main Mission.

Requirement:  having completed Main Quest: In the Shadows of the Estate , Level 16 Reward:  150 XP, Wingardium Leviosa, Tools Collection: Venomous Tentacula and Mandrake Quest Info:  As per Professor Garlick’s instructions, I successfully field tested a Venomous Tentacle and Mandrake in combat. In tertian, she taught me how to cast the Wingardium Leviosa spell, which is useful for levitating and moving objects around the environment.

Objectives:

Acquire and Use a Venomous Tenatacula

• Acquire and Use a Mandrake on Multiple Enemies Simultaneously

Attend Herbology Class During the Day

Return to professor garlick, starting location: professor garlick’s assignment 1.

In order to proceed with the next main quest, we first need to learn Wingardium Leviosa from Professor Garlick.

Acquire and Use a Mandrake on Multiple Enemies Simultaneously

Now warp to the Greenhouses floo flame at Hogwarts Castle and enter the greenhouse to start the lesson.

Return to Professor Garlick to start learning Wingardium Leviosa, the Levitation Charm. As usual, steady your wand with the left stuck and guide it along the symbol’s path to learn the spell. Don’t let go of the left stick and remember to press the corresponding button to gain speed and lose the red spark. Wingardium Leviosa is used to levitate and move objects. Control its position with your movement, and use the D-pad to fine-tune its distance and rotation.

This finishes Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 in Hogwarts Legacy.

Wingardium Leviosa allows you to take hold of your target and lift them on your chosen location. It is a much more precise spell than other mobility spells like Levioso and Accio but is unreliable in battle. It is mainly used for solving puzzles.

You’ll receive this assignment after completing the main quest ‘In the Shadow of the Undercroft’ main quest. Professor Garlick, the Herbologist, will ask you to do the following:

Where to Get a Mandrake and a Venomous Tentacula ¶

Dogweed & Deathcap is located north of Hogsmeade main square.

You can purchase a Venomous Tentacula and a Mandrake from Madame Beatrice Green.

After using the Mandrake, try to find an opportunity to place down the Venomous Tentacula. It’s not a requirement that it’s used in combat, but it’ll sure help you out in this combat (provided you stick around after employing a mandrake on them!).

Quest Objectives

Obtain and test a venomous tentacula, how to use venomous tentacula, acquire and test a mandrake against multiple enemies at once, attend herbalism classes during the day, return to professor garlick.

These are the quest objectives for Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1:

• Obtain and test a Venomous Tentacula.
• Acquire and test a Mandrake against multiple enemies at once.
• Attend herbalism classes during the day.
• Return to Professor Garlick.

The first step is to get a Venomous Tentacula . The easiest way is to buy the plant from a vendor . Travel to Hogsmeade and find the Dogweed & Deathcap shop north of town.

Beatrice Green, the proprietor of Dogweed & Deathcap, sells various battle tools that include Venomous Tentacula and Mandrake . Visit their store and buy each:

• 1x Venomous Tentacula (600 galleons)
• 1x Mandrake (500 galleons)

The two combat tools will cost you a total of 1,100 galleons.

If you haven’t done the quest Professor Sharp’s Assignment 1 yet, here’s a brief explanation of how to use potions and battle tools (like the Venomous Tentacula):

To use a potion or combat tool, long press the key that allows you to select your potions (e.g. Tab on PC, L1, or LB). Now select the desired item and release the button to equip the potion or battle tool. Then tap the same key (e.g. Tab on PC, L1, or LB) once briefly to use the item.

So to complete the first step of the quest “Professor Garlick’s Task 1” you buy, equip, and use a Venomous Tentacula. You can do this directly in Madame Green’s shop.

Equip the Mandrake. Then look for at least 2 opponents and wait until they are relatively close to you. If you now use the Mandrake (with e.g. Tab, L1, or LB), it will roar and you will also complete the quest step “Acquire and test a Mandrake against multiple enemies at once”.

Now travel back to Hogwarts. The library extension is a good travel destination. It is best to travel directly to the greenhouses. Classes will not start if it is nighttime.

💡 How to skip time in Hogwarts Legacy?

If you have a Hogwarts Legacy quest that can only be completed at a certain time of day, you can make the time pass faster. To do this, open the map and press the hotkey for “Wait”. On the PC it is the hotkey “F”, with a controller e.g. the right thumbstick / analog stick.

Skipping times of day by waiting is useful for several quests, including Ghost of our Love .

Now return to Professor Garlick to complete the quest “Professor Garlick’s Quest 1”. As a reward, you can now learn the Wingardium Leviosa spell . With Wingardium Leviosa you can lift objects and put them down in specific places. You can practice this with the chests that are in the greenhouse. If you move the chest under the stairs, you will find a potion underneath as a small reward.

Professor Garlick's Assignment 1 is a mandatory assignment in Hogwarts Legacy . The quest's relation to the main plot

Quest rewards, acquire and use a venomous tentacula, acquire and use a mandrake on multiple enemies simultaneously, attend herbology class during the day.

Completing this assignment is mandatory . You need to complete them in 100% to proceed to The High Keep main quest. The mentioned main quest requires the spell Wingardium Leviosa and Professor Garlick will teach you it for completing her assignment.

• Wingardium Leviosa spell unlocked - this is an important spell for completing puzzles, because you can use magic to freely move objects (e.g. chests).

You can get this tool in two ways. An easier method is to buy a ready-made Venomous Tentacula . To do this, visit the Dogweed and Deathcap shop - it's on the northern edge of Hogsmeade .

The Venomous Tentacula costs 600 gold .

A more difficult and time-consuming method is to make Venomous Tentacula yourself . This is a good solution if you also want to use it in the future. In the same shop you can buy a Venomous Tentacula Seed - it costs 1,050 gold .

This is not the only requirement, because you also need a Potting Table with a Large Pot . By default, you only have a table with a small pot.

Visit the Tomes and Scrolls shop in Hogsmeade. Buy any table that meets the requirements - it should cost 1,000 gold .

Return to the Room of Requirement. Start by using Conjuring spell to create a large pot herb table - select the Herbology menu and go to the third tab (third pot icon from the top). It takes 10 Moonstones to conjure a table.

Place the Venomous Tentacula seed in the large pot . You have to wait 15 minutes for it to fully grow. Then you can take the object.

After getting 1 Venomous Tentacula, open the tool wheel (L1/LB). Select the obtained tool and activate it (press L1/LB).

You can get this tool in two ways. An easier method is to buy ready-made Mandrake . Visit the Dogweed and Deathcap shop .

Mandrake costs 500 gold .

A more difficult and time-consuming method is to make Mandrake yourself . This is a good solution if you also want to use it in the future. In the same shop you can buy a Mandrake Seed - it costs 800 gold .

Return to the Room of Requirement and use the Potting Table with a Small Pot .

Place the Mandrake seed in a small pot . You have to wait 10 minutes for it to fully grow. Then you can take the object.

After obtaining 1 Mandrake, open the tool wheel (L1/LB). Select the tool, but don't activate the Mandrake yet .

Save your game so you don't accidentally waste Mandrake. Visit any location with a large number of enemies, e.g. one of the monsters lairs on the world map (picture 1 shows an example of a spider lair west of Hogsmeade).

Wait for several monsters to approach you and use Mandrake (press L1/LB). You should pass the challenge, because the tool will affect several enemies with its effect.

Return to the Herbology class . The whole lesson is a cut-scene - talk to Professor Garlick after it's over.

You will learn the spell Wingardium Leviosa and you can test it right away on the dummy (after placing the spell in the active slot). If you play on a controller, use the D-pad to move the object.

How to Finish Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 in Hogwarts Legacy

You should find Beatrice Green in Hogsmeade. She is an NPC who will offer to purchase Venomous Tentacle and Mandrake for 1,100 Gold. Even though it is a significant amount of money, be sure it will not be a problem at the later stages of the game. Once you have obtained Venomous Tentacle and Mandrake, feel free to use them and complete the first two objectives.

After that, you should head to the Greenhouse located in Hogwarts Castle. You can attend Herbology class and head to Professor Garlick to finish the assignment.

Professor Garlick’s first assignment is the 31st mission of the main Hogwarts Legacy storyline. It requires you to complete In the Shadows of the Estate quest and provides you with good rewards. Acquire and Use a Mandrake on Multiple Enemies Simultaneously

The hardest part of this quest is finding where you can buy the supplies. If you haven’t explored Hogsmeade thoroughly, then you might not know where Dogweed and Deathcap is located . It’s the building the farthest north on the Hogsmeade map. Thankfully, you’ll only have to make two purchases here for both of the assignments, but they are fairly expensive.

Here’s what you’ll be needing to buy for the quest:

• Mandrake (1)-500 galleons
• Venomous Tentacula (1)-600 galleons

If you’re like me, and you showed up without much gold, there is a disillusionment chest in the shop that will give you 500 galleons. You might also evaluate if you want to buy the seeds instead. If you’re going for a build that focuses on herbology, then you’ll want to keep your items stocked. Planting your own seeds and harvesting them instead of buying items will be more economical in the long term. Keep in mind though that you will still need to purchase a large potting table spellcraft at Tomes and Scrolls in order to plant Venomous Tentacula Seeds.

• Mandrake Seeds-800 galleons
• Venomous Tentacula Seeds-1050 galleons

Acquire and Use Venomous Tentacula (and Mandrake)

You remembered to buy Venomous Tentacula at the store, right? Good. Now it’s as simple as finding a couple of enemies and unleashing your lethal plants on them. You can go anywhere for this; we went to San Bakar’s Tower and found a trio of goblins to dispatch.

Hogwarts Legacy Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 is a special request you receive in game. To complete this request you need to use a couple of plants in battle. These plants are the Venomous Tentacula and a Mandrake. To help you find these plants and complete the assignment use our guide below.

Acquire and Use a Venomous Tentacula

The first object for this assignment is to acquire and use Venomous Tentacula . This plant is kind of hard to find if you don’t know where to look for it. Thankfully if you have access to either the Greenhouse or Hogsmeade you have a couple of sources of acquiring the plant item needed to complete this step.

If you are just looking to snag a full grown plant and move on, the easiest place to look is in the Greenhouses on the Hogwarts’ school ground . Enter the southwest Greenhouse and you will find a number of Venomous Tentacula growing there. Pick what you need from the plants.

The second option is a more permanent solution. If you want to grow your own Venomous Tentacula plants then you need to acquire some seeds. To do this make your way to the Dogweed & Deathcap shop in north Hogsmeade . Here you can purchase the seeds for 1,050 Galleons or the fully grown Venomous Tentacula for 600 Galleons.

Once you’ve acquired a Venomous Tentacula from either of the sources above. The next step is to use it battle. Simply head to a location that has enemies and throw out a Venomous Tentacula to aid you. While the plant is active it will shoot acid at your enemies.

Acquire and Use Mandrake on Multiple Enemies Simultaneously

The second plant you need to acquire is Mandrake . The easiest method to get Mandrake is to purchase either seeds or a plant from the Dogweed & Deathcap shop in north Hogsmeade . It costs 500 per plant. You can also buy Mandrake Seeds from her as well for 800. There is an Eye Ball chest in the shop you can open if you need quick cash to buy yourself either.

It is possible to find Mandrake out in the wild. Try looking in places like the Forbidden Forest for it to spawn in. Use your Revelio spell to highlight plants in the area and look out for them.

Once you’ve acquired a Mandrake from either of the sources above. The next step is to use it battle. Simply head to a location that has multiple enemies and trigger a Mandrake during the fight. While the plant is active it will scream loudly and stun multiple enemies.

Attend Herobolgy During the Day

Upon completion of both of the objectives listed above you will need to return to the Greenhouse and attend class. After the class speak to Professor Garlick. She will congratulate you on completing the assignment and will teach you how to cast the Wingardium Leviosa spell. You also unlock Hogwarts Legacy Professor Garlick’s Assignment 2 .

This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of Professor Garlick’s Assignment 1 Main Mission. To complete this Assignment, you’re required to use a  Venomous Tentacula  and then use a  Mandrake  on multiple enemies. 

Requirement:  You need to complete the Main Quest: In the Shadows of the Estate

Acquire and Use a Venomous Tenatacula

As the mission starts your objective is to “Acquire and Use a Venomous Tenatacula”. For this head north of Hogsmead to a small village name Dogweed and Deathcap. The location is marked on the map.

Enter the plant shop at Dogweed and Deathcap and talk to the shopkeeper, Beatrice Green.

Here you can buy Venomous Tentacle for 600 Galleons and a Mandrake for 500 Galleons. Mandrake is needed for the next objective. Don’t bother buying them as seeds, the  Combat Tools  will be enough.

After purchasing Tentacula, hold L1 and then release to equip it. Press L1 once again to cast it.

Acquire and Use a Mandrake on Multiple Enemies Simultaneously

Now head outside and look for a group of enemies (at least two enemies) close to each other. Press L1 and then select Mandrake. Then use the plant on the enemies and it’ll scream at them.

Attend Herbology Class During the Day

Now, go to the Greenhouses floo flame at Hogwarts Castle and enter the greenhouse to start the lesson during day time.

Return to Professor Garlick

Finally, return to Professor Garlick to start learning Wingardium Leviosa, the Levitation Charm.

Such is the case when players learn both Glacius and Incendio, letting them make the most of one of the best Hogwarts Legacy spell combos they can get their hands on.

Glacius freezes foes and turns them into a sitting duck for the new fifth-year student who can saunter up to them and unleash a damaging blast of Incendio for extra damage. 11 Levioso & Descendo

Levioso is one of the first spells players will learn in Hogwarts Legacy . It allows them to quick-cast a combat-ready version of Wingardium Leviosa that leaves smaller enemies helpless as they're left stranded in the air. Players can either take potshots on enemies after casting this spell or leave them hanging as they focus on other enemies.

However, there's another spell players can cast to humiliate their opponents once they complete Professor Onai's assignment. Descendo smashes players to the ground, and using this spell along with Levioso enhances the damage and leads to one of the best Hogwarts Legacy spell combos players can unleash in the game.

10 Accio & Incendio

Pull enemies in and set them on fire.

As individual spells are learned throughout the game, many of the best spell combos in Hogwarts Legacy are temporarily unavailable to those at the start of their magical journey. With this in mind, one fun spell combo that uses spells from the early game is Accio into Incendio.

To completely master the arcane arts in Hogwarts Legacy, players will want to pick up these incredible spells.

This is not only a great combo, but as Incendio, a fire spell, has an extremely short range, pulling enemies in with Accio is one of the few ways to make this spell work. With the Accio Mastery Talent unlocked, players will be able to pull in multiple enemies at once before setting them all on fire with Accio's area of effect damage.

9 Transformation & Depulso

Turn foes into barrels and throw them around.

One of the most fun spell combos to use, even if it is not the most reliable, is the Transformation and Depulso combo. After transforming one enemy into a barrel, players can try and position themselves so that they can fling the barrel into another enemy . This is even more fun with the Transformation Mastery Talent which makes these barrels explosive.

Alternatively, the barreled-up enemy can be flung into a wall with Depulso or even off a cliff if one is available. This will instantly kill the enemy. If players have the Depulso Mastery Talent unlocked, they will release a second shockwave around them, perfect for situations where they are overwhelmed but still want to pull off this fun combo.

8 Imperio & Petrificus Totalus

One-shot enemies after using their help.

Petrificus Totalus or the Full Body-Bind curse is one of the most overpowered spells in Hogwarts Legacy, as it can one-shot enemies. However, it can only be used out of combat on unsuspecting foes, such as when players use the Disillusionment Charm to sneak around.

Interestingly, if players save the toughest enemy for last, such as a large troll, they can use the Imperius curse to technically take themselves out of combat and subsequently walk up for an easy Petrificus Totalus one-shot. This is even more satisfying when used on foes who have taken out most of their allies while under the effects of Imperio . Hogwarts Legacy has a series of combat challenges, including dueling feats, which will pop up during combat, asking players to complete certain tasks. While many of these are educational, providing hints to players about how to engage in duels, one dueling feat, in particular, is notoriously dark.

Simply put, this dueling feat asks players to torture a burning enemy, which can be done by using one of the fire spells, such as Incendio and then the Unforgivable Curse Crucio. While this spell combo won't be for everyone, it is a fitting option for those role-playing in Hogwarts Legacy as a dark witch or wizard.

6 Transformation & Bombarda

Explode barrels that were once enemies.

By using the Transformation spell in combat, enemies will be turned into barrels, but when paired with the Transformation Mastery Talent, these barrels become explosive. While these barrels can be thrown to explode on impact, they can also be used to create the biggest explosion in the game with Bombarda.

Bombarda, also known as the Exploding Charm, deals plenty of damage by itself, but using it in combination with the Transformation spell makes it even more fun. This combo is a natural fit for those with a particular proclivity for pyrotechnics, such as future student Seamus Finnigan.

5 Accio & Descendo

Throw enemies around.

Controlling enemies and their movement is a ton of fun in Hogwarts Legacy , even if it doesn't do the most damage. One great example is pulling enemies in with the Summoning Charm Accio, before slamming them into the ground with Descendo.

This combo reaches a whole other level when each of the spells is upgraded with their respective Spell Talents . Accio Mastery, for example, pulls in extra enemies that are close to the primary target, meaning that this combo can be pulled off on a whole host of enemies. Descendo Mastery, meanwhile, creates a shockwave that emanates from the area around the slam.

4 Glacius & Diffindo

Turn enemies into shards of ice.

Some of the most fun spell combos in Hogwarts Legacy also do plenty of damage and are encouraged by the game itself in dueling feats. The use of Glacius followed by Diffindo is one such example. By freezing enemies with Glacius and then casting the Severing Charm Diffindo, the unfortunate foe will be shredded into shards of ice. Simply put, this is one of the highest damage combos in Hogwarts Legacy .

When both of these spells are performed with their Mastery Talents unlocked, the results are even more chaotic and almost resemble the fight in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , when hundreds of crystal balls are smashed to smithereens at the Ministry. As this combo is one of the dueling feats, it is a great one to learn, as completing dueling feats unlocks some of the best outfits in Hogwarts Legacy .

3 The Disillusionment Charm & Flipendo

Sneak up and flip foes.

While Petrificus Totalus is the most powerful and easy spell to use while invisible with the Disillusionment Charm, there are plenty of other fun spells to use on unsuspecting targets. For example, while sneaking up behind a foe and flipping them with the Knockback Jinx, Flipendo, won't do much damage, it is funny and can then be followed up with other spells.

This form of embarrassment could be saved for particularly egregious enemies, such as poachers if the player is role-playing as an animal lover. The feat of flipping over an enemy from behind can also be pulled off with the Invisibility Potion, which happens to be one of the best potions in Hogwarts Legacy when used smartly.

2 Arresto Momentum & Any Unforgivable Curse

Suspend enemies before unleashing dark magic.

Albus Dumbledore's magical style was once remarked upon by Kingsley Shacklebolt in the movies and by the portrait of Phineas Nigellus Black in the books. If players also want to look great while slinging spells, then using Arresto Momentum before performing an Unforgivable Curse can add a dramatic element to their gameplay.

Arresto Momentum suspends an enemy in the air and makes time seem to slow down. This spell is perfect for players roleplaying as dark witches or wizards , as they can make their prey watch in terror while walking up to perform an Unforgivable Curse, such as Crucio or Avada Kedavra. With the Dark Arts Talent, Slowing Curse, Arresto Momentum will even be treated as a curse, meaning more damage can be dealt with other Dark Arts spells.

1 Expelliarmus & Ancient Magic Throw

Disarm enemies and throw their weapon back.

Expelliarmus is one of the most iconic spells from the Harry Potter series, with the eponymous protagonist using it to great effect. Not only is it Harry's signature spell, but it is also the very spell with which he took down Lord Voldemort in the pair's final duel. This is despite it not being considered a strong spell in the eyes of many witches and wizards.

In Hogwarts Legacy , Expelliarmus is just as effective at disarming foes and gives the player a momentary advantage. However, when paired with the Ancient Magic Throw Expertise Talent, relieving certain enemies of their weapons becomes even more fun. If, for example, an enemy is wielding a sword, axe, or crossbow, players can disarm them with Expelliarmus and then throw their weapon back at them with devastating effects.
