Experimental, /ɛkspirɪˈmɛntəl/, /ɛkspɛrɪˈmɛntəl/.

The adjective experimental is good for describing things that are still in a trial stage. An experimental drug is usually tested in a lab for years before being used on patients.

Something that's experimental is at an early stage, being observed, tested out, and subjected to experiments as it's being developed. An experimental space craft might be launched and watched from afar as scientists decide what changes to make before it can be used for human space exploration. Experimental medicines are sometimes tested on animals before they're given to people. The 15th century meaning was "having experience," from the Latin root experimentum , "test or trial."

  • adjective of the nature of or undergoing an experiment “an experimental drug” synonyms: empiric , empirical derived from experiment and observation rather than theory
  • adjective relating to or based on experiment “ experimental physics”

Donald Trump Utters The 1 Word He Wasn't Supposed To Say During RNC Speech

Josephine Harvey

Assignment Editor, HuffPost

experimental synonym synonym

It appears Donald Trump couldn’t help but go off script during his excruciatingly long Republican National Convention speech, uttering the one word that sources close to him said he wouldn’t.

The former president was not planning to mention President Joe Biden by name during his address Thursday, insiders told multiple reporters , amid Trump’s supposed push for unity following the attempt on his life Saturday.

Fox News reported ahead of the speech that “highly placed sources” had told him Trump would not use the word “Biden” once, as part of his new focus on unification. Trump campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez also spoke of the plan to CBS News .

But less than halfway into his rambling, 92-minute speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination, Trump name-dropped Biden twice while criticizing him as worse than the last “10 worst” presidents combined.

“Think of it. The 10 worst, added them up — they will not have done the damage that Biden has done,” Trump said. “Only going to use the term once: Biden. I’m not going to use the name anymore. Just one time. The damage that he’s done to this country is unthinkable.”

Sofia Kinzinger, an ex-aide to onetime Vice President Mike Pence and the wife of former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), tweeted that the pivot was a “Perfect example of what the Trump White House was like- pure chaos, planning was impossible.”

After last week’s assassination attempt, Trump on Sunday said he planned to completely change his original RNC speech because he had been given an opportunity to “bring the country together.”

Trump began his address with a more subdued tone as he discussed his brush with death, but he was back to his usual antics within 20 minutes.

Title: word embedding dimension reduction via weakly-supervised feature selection.

Abstract: As a fundamental task in natural language processing, word embedding converts each word into a representation in a vector space. A challenge with word embedding is that as the vocabulary grows, the vector space's dimension increases and it can lead to a vast model size. Storing and processing word vectors are resource-demanding, especially for mobile edge-devices applications. This paper explores word embedding dimension reduction. To balance computational costs and performance, we propose an efficient and effective weakly-supervised feature selection method, named WordFS. It has two variants, each utilizing novel criteria for feature selection. Experiments conducted on various tasks (e.g., word and sentence similarity and binary and multi-class classification) indicate that the proposed WordFS model outperforms other dimension reduction methods at lower computational costs.

credo \ ˈkridoʊ \ noun

: any system of principles or beliefs; creed

Listen to the pronunciation.

The word credo has appeared in 45 articles on NYTimes.com in the past year, including on June 19 in “ New York’s First Black Librarians Changed the Way We Read ” by Jennifer Schuessler:

Schomburg was the most famous of the Black bibliophiles who, starting in the late 19th century, had amassed impressive “parlor libraries” in their homes. Such libraries became important gathering places for Black writers and thinkers at a time when newly created public libraries — which exploded in number in the decades after 1870 — were uninterested in Black materials, and often unwelcoming to Black patrons. Schomburg summed up his credo in a famous 1925 essay, writing, “The American Negro must remake his past in order to make his future.” In a 1913 letter, he had put it less decorously: The items in his library were “powder with which to fight our enemies.”
