You can choose to take our single-honours creative writing degree or combine your love of writing with a joint honours in literature or English language.

Our practice module allows you to take advantage of our great links with local organisations and do a placement with organisations like Action Medical Research , Brighton Dome and Festival , British Forces Broadcasting Services , Factory Films , The Old Market Theatre and Men’s Health Magazine . A range of option modules means you can choose to study topics including travel writing, American literature, queer writing, writing for stage, screen and audio, graphic novels and early modern literature.

Opportunities to specialise

Studying our Creative Writing degree means that you'll have the chance to focus on a specialist subject as part of your degree from year 2 of your course, or you can carry on with your Creative Writing degree for a broad view of the subject along with your choice of option modules. Alongside core creative writing modules, you'll focus on your specialist subject through core modules and the option modules you choose, and you'll graduate with that subject in your degree title.

Our Creative Writing MA is open to those with and without experience. Through creative workshops we aim to prepare you for the career you really want in the many fields that creative writing offers. You will work with supportive professional writers, developing your skills to produce and share stories in a variety of genres.

We have fantastic links with local publishers, writers and creative companies and offer a unique salon series where industry experts offer practical advice and insights. In semester two, you will apply your writing and creative practice in a workplace scenario, while being encouraged to work on your own interests and passions.

At Brighton, we are keen to support innovative PhD students working on different approaches to creative practice. We have over 30 creative writing PhD students exploring a diverse range of styles and genres and who are using distinct research approaches to push and evolve writing boundaries.
