Of the hundreds of free movie download websites available on the internet, public domain movies should be your go-to so there's no question about their legality. PublicDomainMovie.net is a great source for these kinds of films.

When a movie is in the public domain, it means the copyright is no longer held by any one individual—the public owns the movie. In other words, you can watch and download the films as many times as you like, completely legally.

There are lots of categories here where you might find movies, so the link below, which takes you to Feature Films, is just one example. There are tens of thousands of free films in over a dozen languages.

Most if not all the movies from the sites listed above are sourced from Internet Archive but I prefer those movie download sites over this one because there's just too much to sift through here. Still, I like to use this website for its filtering options, which can include language, creator, year, topic, and more.

Another way to download movies is through the Library of Congress. According to the LOC, the purpose of this list of movies is to "showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage."

They're a selection of films from the National Film Registry (NFR), which is a collection of movies selected by the United States National Film Preservation Board.

A couple of things I like about downloading movies here is that the website is ad-free and all the options are on a single page because there are only a couple dozen movies to pick from.

These titles can be downloaded directly from the Library of Congress' website in formats like MP4 and MOV.

As someone who has been using Netflix for a long time, it's my top choice for saving movies offline. If you don't use Netflix, there are several other similar options listed below.

Streaming services like Netflix don't give you the video file to save wherever you want. You can only download the movie in their approved app, which helps them control further copying or burning to discs.

It's easy to locate just the titles that support being downloaded.

You can have up to 25 downloads on five supported mobile devices at one time.

Hulu is another subscription-based service that offers full legal movies and original programming. This means it's a totally legit way to get movie downloads.

My biggest gripe? Like these other services, downloading a movie only works on some of the plans, Hulu (No Ads) and Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV . In addition to plans with ads, movies from premium add-ons and Live TV on-demand movies, are not downloadable.

There Are Few Legal Movie Download Sites

It's obvious from the above list that there are very few free and legal movie download sites. This isn't from a lack of trying on my part. In fact, every month, I look over this list and check for any new sites I can add to it.

A quick Google search for 'movie download site' will list lots of options, but you probably won't even see any of the above websites on the first page of the search results.

Why is that? There are two reasons:

Most websites offering movie downloads are doing so illegally .
Most "movie download" sites are really just movie streaming sites.

The top sites people are visiting for movie downloads often don't deliver on the 'download' part and instead let you stream movies ( here's the difference ), but they still shouldn't. Usually, the films you can get on those sites were released this year , and some are even still in theaters! That's the first red flag that the website isn't complying with most copyright laws.

Movies obtained that way are almost always rips of Blu-rays or DVDs, meaning someone is sharing their purchased (or rented, filmed, or pre-released) movie with others. This is how most movie torrent sites work.

If a movie isn't in the public domain or if the creator hasn't authorized its sharing, then it's not yours to keep. The first few sites in the list above offer completely free content because they host public domain films, while the others are legally sound due to agreements those companies have with the movie studios, allowing them to offer authorized downloads.

Consider Streaming Movies Instead

If you don't have to, don't limit yourself to downloading when there's the option of streaming.

This is what I do 99% of the time. There are many more choices if you consider watching films on free movie websites instead. The films may not be yours to keep, but you'll get to watch them often in high quality and stream them directly from the websites, usually as many times as you like.

If you want to download a movie so it can be played on your phone or tablet, I recommend using a free movie-watching app instead. It's all the same titles you can find on movie websites but packaged for a smaller screen.

Just be sure to log in once or twice per month, as downloads will automatically be removed from inactive Disney+ accounts after 30 days.

Whether you're going on a trip or suffering from patchy internet, downloading videos to watch offline makes for a smoother experience. All the best streaming services offer some way to download content for offline viewing. Here, we walk you through the process—with some additional recommendations on expanding your device's storage.

Before we start, you'll need an internet connection to be able to download videos for offline playback. Ideally, you're connected via Wi-Fi. (Make sure you also have enough free space on your device; you can usually check that in storage settings.) Some apps will let you download via cellular data too, which might be fine if you have an unlimited plan, but it will count toward your monthly data allowance, and your speeds could be throttled if you go over the limit.

First of all, you need to know that not all movies and TV shows on Netflix can be downloaded, due to rights restrictions on certain content, or other factors like cost and popularity prohibiting Netflix from offering all titles for download.

You'll find that basically everything marked with 'Netflix Originals' can be downloaded, but also plenty of other shows and movies besides.

If you want to see whether a certain show or movie can be downloaded, just select it in the app. You'll either see a 'Download' button on the listing screen, or you won't, depending on what it is. Here's what a title you can download looks like:

If you'd rather just get an at-a-glance list of everything you can download on Netflix, that's easy. On mobile devices, click the 'Downloads' button in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. You'll then get an option that says 'Find Something to Download'. Clicking on this will reveal everything you can download on the device you're using.

On the Windows 10 app, it's pretty similar. Click the menu button in the top left-hand corner, and scroll down to 'Available to Download' at the bottom. Selecting this will show you every TV show and movie you can download on Netflix.

Whatever subtitles and language options you have selected on the show or movie at the time should be the version you then download. How much space each Netflix movie or TV show takes up on your device is determined by the length of the content and by your download settings, which we'll explain below.

How to change your Netflix download settings: Smart Downloads explained

On mobile devices, click the 'More' button on the far right of the bottom of the screen, and go to 'App Settings'. In here, you'll see a whole download section, which will let you adjust whether you download shows and movies via Wi-Fi only or with your mobile data plan. You can also change your Download Location, if needed.

You can adjust the Download Video Quality between Standard or High, with high using up more of your storage.

Netflix has a feature called Smart Downloads. If you watch an episode of a TV show while downloaded, for example, it'll automatically delete any episodes you finish and download the next episodes when you're on Wi-Fi again.

These settings are basically identical on all devices, but on Windows 10 you'll need to select the three dots in the top right-hand screen to open your settings.

The Downloads settings let you adjust the picture quality, among other things.

How to delete Netflix downloads

Go to your 'Downloads' section from the menu, click the pen in the top right-hand corner, and you'll be given the option to remove any shows or movies you have downloaded on your device.

So far so good…kinda

I wanted to give them 5 stars but they just shortened the videos per day from 20 to 15 without notice. I mean, I guess it’s still generous but not I have to wait longer. Also I think they upped the videos that don’t work with ads, you actual have to use coins to pay for them. One more thing, when the actors kiss, it sounds disgusting when they break the kiss, any way to edit that out? Now that I have the cons out of the way, here are some things I love. They have great content, although I wish there was more wolf stuff. You can basically see most of the content for free if you are patient. If you are extra patient you CAN see it all for FREE! The acting by some is extra cheesy but the fact that they are willing to act out the dialog that is written, is cool. Also, even though it’s new they have quite a bit of content. I hope they make more. I would even donate to have them make more content. That’s the thing, when a company isn’t forcing you to buy, to see their content, it makes you want to help them succeed. UPDATE: Guess what? Now we lose bonus coins we earned from watching Ad Videos after 5 days! Ridiculous why even bother checking in and watching the ads if you don’t plan on using the coins until your ready. I guess I should Watch something, use all my coins, and forget the app, which I’d hate to do because this company is usually pretty fair, what happened?

I didn’t expect to enjoy this app as much as I did. The stories are so intriguing and I was a little shocked to see K-dramas. I do wish that some of the K-dramas weren’t voiced by English actors though. I prefer just reading subtitles. It gets irritating when the mouth and words don’t match. I’m not the biggest fan of the ad situation, but I also don’t mind it either. I wish every episode was 2 minutes long and that there wasn’t a recap at the beginning. I noticed there aren’t many shows but I don’t know how long this app has been a thing so I hope more are to come. Overall I love the app. The acting is cringe at times but not as bad as some reviews make it seem. I can tell there’s a low budget so I wouldn’t expect too much anyway. Plus I feel like bad acting can make shows funnier. Still this app eats every show it puts out. I get so invested off of just a trailer. I feel like the use of adds and coins brings back what it felt like to watch shows on cable TV. Sometimes the anticipation made the show better. I also loved commercial bathroom breaks. At least I’m not waiting for a 1-2 minute clip everyday. I only have to watch an ad.

Normally I do not leave reviews especially negative ones. These shorts are really entertaining and I ultimately enjoy watching them. However, I am very disappointed and upset that each “short” takes up a various amount of your coins. I started out watching every ad to get my coins for the day which landed me just over 230 coins. So I was a bit excited to watch more of the series I have been trying to get through. I figured that I would be able to watch at least 4 to 5 shorts (5 minutes or so of the series for the day) but I didn’t even get that. I was able to watch two which were less then a minute long. Afterwards it says I do not have enough coins. I would give this app a 5 star review if it wasn’t for the fact that somehow the price for each short adjusts based on how many coins you have. On top of that you cannot see the price of how much each episode costs until you are out of coins. Yesterday, the next episode said it was 58 coins. Today I had over 230 coins and was only able to watch two episodes? In other words one episode cost 58 coins and the next one took the rest. It seems like a major scam to get people to really fork out the money for the game without realizing what is going on. If the company fixes the issues then I will come back and update my review. If not my review will stay. Thank you for reading. Again this is not something I do in fact this is the first review I have ever done but I would hate to see people get scammed.
