‘RDX’ movie review: Delivers no-holds barred action, and nothing more

The lead cast of shane nigam, antony ‘pepe’ varghese, neeraj madhav, mahima nambiar and vishnu agasthya carry this film that shines with some pulsating action sequences.

Published - August 25, 2023 05:35 pm IST

S R Praveen

A still from ‘RDX’

A sobered-down fighter, carrying in his gait and time-worn face the glimmers of a bloody past, happens to be a commonly used trope in mass actioners. In RDX , we have not just one, but three trained martial arts fighters, Robert (Shane Nigam), his brother Dony ( Antony ‘Pepe’ Varghese ) and their friend Xavier (Neeraj Madhav), who have left their past behind settled down into their relatively more peaceful lives. Yet, the embers of past combats have not fully died out, and could reappear anytime, disrupting their serenity.

In Nahas Hidayath’s debut directorial, a daring home invasion and brutal violence appears as the triggering point, upsetting the peace that exists in the lives of the protagonists. It is the event around which the numerous fight sequences that fill the film are written, for it has a connection to their past and a bearing on their future. In some of the recent Malayalam films filled with one fight sequence after another, one gets a feeling that they were looking for a reason to fight; in RDX , the preceding events justifies the action that follows in most cases.

For added measure, one of them even preaches the value of restraining oneself, when one is possessed with such fighting powers, a maxim which they don’t necessarily follow all the time. As one fight makes way for another, one is reminded of films like Thallumala and Ajagajantharam , which also followed similar methods to woo a predominantly young audience. RDX certainly lacks the technical flair or finesse of these films, but it makes up for it in having a bare-minimum story, which gives the audience the emotional need to root for the three, and in having some pulsating action sequences courtesy the action choreographer duo Anbariv.

But the way the film portrays people from a colony of economically and socially disadvantaged as violent hooligans — with repeated references to their ‘colony’ background and even the portrayal of their area as a danger zone — appears problematic. Much of the action sequences pack a punch, with Neeraj Madhav and his ‘nunchaku’ fights being the standout. Even Mahima Nambiar, who is otherwise relegated to a relatively minor character, gets one short, but effective action scene. Compared to what she does, what Babu Antony (the action hero of the 1990s) gets to do towards the fag end of the film, is rather tame.

Yet it is Vishnu Agasthya, playing the antagonist Paulson, who leaves behind an impactful performance and manages to convince us of him being equal to the combined strength of the three martial arts experts. The repeated use of festivals, which provide the possibility of assembling a large crowd, as the staging ground for ‘mass scenes’ have begun to get repetitive. Although it has to be said that most of them manage to do something distinct with the action sequences.

RDX promises to deliver no-holds barred action and delivers just that, and nothing more.

RDX is currently running in theatres

RDX Review: A delight for action enthusiasts

 alt=

'RDX', starring Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese, and Neeraj Madhav, is fundamentally a family drama brimming with high-voltage fistfights and brawls. It's not quite on par with 'Thallumaala.' The narrative unfolds in a linear fashion, chronicling clashes among a group of rugged men. RDX carves a distinct niche for itself in Malayalam cinema's action genre, thanks to its impeccable close-combat fighting sequences. Our protagonists waste no time, elegantly showcasing their karate prowess whenever the opportunity arises.

The backdrop and combat sequences might evoke memories of Lijo Jose Pellissery's 'Angamaly Diaries', as the brawls ensue in a festive setting with multiple characters becoming embroiled. However, the similarities end there, as the plot takes a different trajectory. In RDX, director Nahaz Hidayat prioritises delivering the right 'punches', which might explain the straightforward storyline – a devout father, his young adult children, a church festival, an attempted assault on a politician, and one of the sons finding himself in the midst of the turmoil.

The stunts by Anbariv and Irfan Khan elevate the film's quality. Yet, it's the actors who deserve credit, having executed punches and kicks with finesse. Shane Nigam dominates much of the screen time. Antony's role is equally well-developed, though Neeraj's character, Xavier, appears somewhat underwhelming. Only the squeaky wheel gets the grease!

RDX's success was unexpected: Director Nahas Hidayath

Amidst all the machismo, the female characters in the film are relegated to mere supporting roles. The film aptly portrays the challenges faced by Dony and Xavier's family during a confrontation with the hooligans. The music and background score effectively enhance the film's overall atmosphere.

In conclusion, the film will likely resonate more with audiences seeking a cinematic experience with high-octane and high-voltage fight sequences this Onam season.

RDX movie review: Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese's film rides high on pulsating action scenes

  • Sanjith Sidhardhan

Last Updated: 01.10 PM, Aug 25, 2023

Story: Brothers Robert and Doney along with their friend Xavier are trained in karate, and their skills come handy every time they get into a fight - which is often. But a confrontation goes too far, forcing the ones who care to split them up to prevent any bloodshed. Years later, when Doney's family is threatened by a group of goons, the three reunite.

Review: Post pandemic, it's become essential for a movie to have enough cinematic elements to attract audiences to theatres. And from the movies that have worked in theatres so far, across the country, it seems that action movies are probably the best bet to offer the big screen experience for the audience. But it's also a genre that is hard to pull off when the underlying storyline is thin, even if the stunts are amazing. Debutant filmmaker Nahas Hidayath's RDX, which stars Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese and Neeraj Madhav in the titular roles of Robert, Doney and Xavier, flits between ordinary and spectacular - the latter especially during its action scenes.

Also read: Nahas Hidayath reveals why Anbariv decided to do RDX amid Prabhas' Salaar and Ram Charan-Shankar film

Its stunt choreographers Anbariv actually play a major role in driving the film, which is essentially built on five pulsating action scenes. Too much action can be a bad thing for movies that are almost 2 hours and 30 minutes, but in RDX, the makers prove that if done right, these can often enable the audience to overlook the flat storyline and performances.

image_item

Each of these sequences is mounted on a big scale or at least has a novel aspect to it, keeping the audience hooked. There is a purpose to every fight; it's not just needless or mindless throwing of daggers and roundhouse kicks. There is a stake in every fight - be it to build up the heroes, tear down their egos, show off their skills or even pull their loved ones out of danger when facing an army of men. The filmmaker and Anbariv duo also make these scenes look convincing, with Sam CS' music and frenzied editing helping matters.

The story, however, is wafer thin. It has just enough emotional thread to keep the audience attached to its characters and their need for revenge. This is also why the flashback scenes of the characters in the first half doesn't add too much to the film, except give it an additional layer of an entertainer. But to be honest, RDX is at its weakest here - both in terms of the scripting and performances. It's only in the second half that the film finds its fuel and when it does, there's no stopping it.

Among the trio, Shane Nigam is pitched as the central character - only because it's his romance and consequent fight that sets the ball rolling. That said he gets to showcase a side that is rarely seen from the talented actor. Antony Varghese gets to display a sensitive side of him. Neeraj gets the short end of the stick in the film as he is relegated to a nunchuck-flinging sidekick of the two brothers. But he along with Babu Antony get their mass moments in the film.

Also read: RDX's Shane Nigam: Tags like 'Depression Star' are hurtful, make me question my hard work

Verdict: The makers of RDX made no other claims other than it's an action-packed film and they deliver on that promise. Don't go expecting anything else.

'RDX,' directed by debutante Nahas Hidhayath, delves into the realm of survival drama as a family grapples with the vendetta of a ruthless gang. Set against a backdrop of conflict, the film harnesses emotional intensity to captivate the audience, even as action-packed sequences take center stage. While the screenplay may not be abundant in resources, Hidhayath skillfully maintains engagement through brisk storytelling and impressive stunt choreography. Writers Adarsh Sukumaran and Shabas Rasheed infuse the tale with intermittent twists, leaning into the classic give-and-take dynamic and well-timed retaliation. The director's finesse rescues the narrative from stagnation, infusing it with a vibrant treatment.

Hidhayath's narrative mastery shines through as the pacing remains consistently dynamic, avoiding melodrama that could veer into excess. Amidst the whirlwind of action and violence, the film skillfully handles sentimental relationships. The synergy between emotional depth and aggressive elements renders 'RDX' all the more appealing. Hidhayath's promising debut is evident as he adeptly navigates the plot's escalation.

The crux of 'RDX' unfolds during a church festival marred by the intrusion of outsiders. Dony (Antony Varghese) steps in to defend his father Philip (Lal), who was attacked by a henchman. As a martial arts expert, Dony retaliates effectively, prompting the assailants to flee. However, a brutal assault on Philip's family by a gang from a Kochi colony shatters their lives. Dony's wife Simi (Aima Sebastian), along with his mother Kunjumol (Mala Parvathy) and infant, are gravely injured.

RDX Review: A Generic Action Film That Doesn’t Go Beyond Its Self-Imposed Mass-Entertainer Image

RDX

Director: Nahas Hidhayath

Cast: Shane Nigam , Neeraj Madhav , Antony Varghese, Mahima Nambiar

Duration: 154 minutes

Available in: Theatres

Nahas Hidhayath ’s debut is a loud arrival for sure, and the decibel levels in the film do live up to the promise held in its title. This is an addition to Malayalam cinema’s attempts at the “mass” entertainer, one that comes with a specific aim in increasing testosterone levels of a largely male audience. Every industry wants a piece of this lucrative cake, and there have been results of varying degrees, mostly resulting in misfires. But at the same time, there are not many filmmakers learning any lessons from these losses.

This is a fairly simple film. It doesn’t have lofty ambitions. But the problem is that it doesn’t attempt anything beyond its seemingly self-imposed image of the mass entertainer. We have a classic back-from-retirement revenge template, but not a single moment or plot beat that rises above it. There is adequate technical flair, sure, but where’s the unique emotional heft that makes us root for its characters? The film can keep you engaged after a certain point because of the familiarity it builds with its characters over the first half, but there’s no denying that all of it is utterly generic.

Speaking in the language of the audience that clearly wants these films made – elevation shouldn’t come ahead of character. Similarly, it’s ideal when emotion precedes action. Even stars as big as Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi are getting tired responses from the audience when their films have the same problem. Filmmakers need to believe that cheers from an audience would be louder when there’s an organic story backing the characters played by stars. We only have good actors here, and building their star personas require a lot more than back-to-the-camera shots and a heavy background score. The one action bit involving the female lead in the second half is the only one that resonated as a well-constructed payoff.

The film does have an impactful setup, at least in terms of the gravity of the visuals depicted – an entire family bludgeoned to hurt, a chain being snatched from a baby’s neck – these images definitely build an expectation for the forthcoming vengeance. But with the way the screenplay is structured, the film has to then cut to a lengthy and dull flashback portion to establish its characters. All the information we’re going to get from the flashback is fairly delivered within the setup itself, down to the dynamics between all characters. They were a team, something bad went down and they had to be separated – we know that, but what’s more to it? Give us something more than the obvious, please.

Robert, Dony and Xavier are childhood buddies, and the trio also happen to be excelling students of karate. There’s no beat that suggests why they are so drawn to flexing brawn. None of the characters have an inner world. Okay to be fair, that’s also probably asking for too much from a film that clearly knows it can win even by being perfunctory. But again, the actors seem to be passionately sinking their teeth deep into scenes where they’re meant to be all charged up, but the film doesn’t do justice to them. The template has everything in place to deliver more, but the makers are too satisfied with the bare minimum. As a side effect of this temperament, the film also indulges in problematic class profiling (which can also be read as caste profiling), with the way it relegates absolutely negative patterns on people from a certain “colony”.

Coming to the action sequences, which make up the USP of the film – and are also the cornerstone on which this project has probably been built – there’s always a semblance of high-octane, soaring voltage, but somehow the feeling never hits the bones. I’d attribute it to the writing, and the very obviously overcompensating background score. There’s one good sequence set inside a colony, which uses both location and props well. This film on the whole can also be called a showreel for Anbariv, but the work here is also not something they haven’t exhibited in other films of theirs, it’s just that there’s a mashup and more of it in here. The editing of the action blocks seems sharp and like quite the flex at first glance, but I eventually started finding the tendency to cut to every available angle to be quite tedious. It also often breaks the flow of the choreography , restricting the amount of visual punch a single stunt can pack. Of course, I need to acknowledge that this film is being targeted at the shorts/reels crowd who’re eagerly waiting to make their own coked-up edits of the action – it makes some sense that the makers would pre-empt this tendency and provide that high in their film itself. But the result isn’t too impressive.

Now here’s some wishful thinking on my part – I wish Malayalam cinema acknowledges that they’re in a post- Thallumaala  era, and realise that there’s so much more that can be done to excess-of-fights cinema. It’s not wrong to want to show the world that we can also pull off the Big Multi-Starrer Action Film TM , but it would make a big difference if done with a dash of personality.  RDX  will still find its audience, because this can seem like it’s exactly what they need at the moment, but they sure deserve better.

RDX Movie Review

RDX Movie Cast & Crew

If RDX is an explosive novel, the romance between Robert and Mini is a lovely little short story. The characters are played by Shane Nigam and Mahima Nambiar, and in the little time they get together, we see the blossoming of love. We get a nice scene that says the direct approach is the best approach. We get the reasons that could drive Robert and Mini apart: caste, as well as the fact that he'd rather spend time at karate class than work in his father's mill. It is at this mill that the cutest moment unfolds, when Robert indirectly attempts to solve the issue of getting married to Mini. (This “scheme” has to do with his older brother Dony, played by Anthony Varghese.) This little love story – this short story – has both joy and sadness. Mini enters the film, saying that she wants to rough up a man. She leaves the film with this wish fulfilled. The arc is complete. It’s a good bit of writing, and more importantly, it’s just enough writing that such a film needs.

Nahas Hidayath's non-stop action movie opens with words uttered by Eleanor Roosevelt: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." The quote could instead be something like this: "The present belongs to those who believe in the power of their fists." Like the more elegantly written, elegantly made Thallumaala, RDX is a series of brute action sequences. These are choreographed by Anbariv, and these are the reasons for the film's existence. But there is the backbone of an emotional story. Lal and Maala Parvathi play the parents of Robert and Dony. Early on, as they prepare to leave for a church festival, we see her weeping that their son isn't home. We think that she is talking about Dony, who we have just seen near the church, and we think there is some father-son problem there. But what we don't yet know is that she is referring to Robert, who we have not met yet, and who will eventually come back home thirsting for revenge.

This is not exactly the world's newest story. But these small tweaks in the plot and the characters give the clichéd storyline enough intrigue to make RDX more than just a bunch of Insta-reels of fights. For instance, the writers Adarsh Sukumaran and Shabas Rasheed split the screenplay into two timelines. This gives us an indirect sense of how long certain feelings have festered. The indirect way the primary villain (Paulson, played by Vishnu Agasthya) is brought in – as someone’s brother – is interesting. All the performances are solid, and it helps that – apart from the central scene of home invasion that’s intended to make us side with one set of characters over another – nothing else is treated with melodrama. Even a big twist in a romantic angle is presented in the most matter-of-fact manner. This is a very sensible decision by the writers, because the emotions bind us to this story, but this is not an emotional story.

It’s an action story – and look at the indirect way the first fight begins. It has nothing to do with the principal characters. It is about a small-time political party worker named Peter. There are many names like this in the film, and at one point, when the name “Seban” is mentioned, the editor has to insert a cut of this character so that we recall who this Seban is. But if “Seban” and “Ratheesh” and “Davis” are unmemorable as individual characters, their presence adds texture and density to this story of war between a “colony” of troublemakers and the relatively upper-class trio of R and D and X. R and D, of course, stand for Robert and Dony. Neeraj Madhav plays X: as in, Xavier. His character is the most underdeveloped of the three, and you get the feeling he’s there simply so that the acronym of these three names can form a big blast of a title. (“RD” doesn’t quite have the same ring, or the same impact.)

The Anbariv duo stage the fights in a variety of locations and scenarios, from a church festival to a carnival to a boat to the streets of the colony. The latter is the highlight, not just because it is staged so well but because for a large part, it avoids the use of the most overused trope of Indian stunts: the slo-mo shot. When a man on a bike approaches another man and takes a swing at him, the real-time of the action leaves us a visceral thrill. The rest of the fights aren’t as powerful because they follow the pattern of “mass” movies: apart from the slo-mo that reduces tension, there’s the constant “swagger music” to inflate the importance of the central characters. Had the fights been given the same kind of consideration as the emotional beats, RDX would have been a much better movie. But at least, it’s not boring, and I think that counts for something these days.

  • •STORY IDEA:

The movie RDX commences with a Palli Perunnal, during which an altercation arises when Dony (Antony Varghese) comes across a group that engages in a dispute with his father, Philip (Lal). In response to this matter, the aforementioned group proceeds to assault Dony and his family during the late hours of the night, resulting in significant harm. This occurrence prompts Robert (Shane Nigam) and Xavier (Neeraj Madhav) to take action, leading to the reformation of the RDX team in order to seek revenge for this heinous act.

•DETAIL REVIEW :

The film RDX was written and directed by the debutant Nahas Hidayath. Along with the director Nahas Hidayath, Adarsh Sukumaran wrote the screenplay and Shabas Rasheed wrote the dialogues for the film. The movie is produced by Sophia Paul under the production company of Weekend Blockbusters. Stunt choreographer duo Anbariv does the action sequences and Alex J. Pulickal does the cinematography. Chaman Chakko was hired to do the editing and Sam C.S. composed the music and background score for the film. With a running time of 151 minutes the film RDX is currently running in theatres as an Onam release with a U/A censor certificate.

When the Onam movie lineup was announced, I initially had low expectations for RDX. I even questioned whether it could hold its own against the King of Kotha and Ramachandra Boss & Co. However, I was proven wrong and learned the valuable lesson of ‘never judging a book by its cover’. RDX is a must-see film that demands to be experienced on the big screen. Even an hour after leaving the theater, I am still under its spell. This movie is simply incredible, and I enjoyed every single moment of it. RDX has undoubtedly given me one of the most unforgettable and awesome theater experiences in recent memory.

The film in question is a masterful execution of cinematic artistry because RDX has an exceptional direction, a brilliantly crafted screenplay, and dialogue that is capable of eliciting a thrilling response from viewers. The performances of each actor are characterized by a high level of energy, and the fight sequences are a veritable feast for action enthusiasts. While the story may be predictable, that’s the only minor flaw. Despite this, the predictability of the plot does not detract from the overall viewing experience, as the film possesses a commanding power that captivates every single viewer from beginning to end. The atmosphere in the theater was electric, with the audience fully engaged and expressing their enthusiasm through loud whistling, cheering, and clapping. The success of RDX can be attributed to its exceptional production values and well-crafted script, which effectively engage and captivate the audience.

The direction of Nahas Hidayath was exceptional, characterized by a passionate approach and a filmmaking style that exhibited a commendable level of quality. The direction maintained a consistent momentum throughout the film, without any instances of imbalance. The director’s vision was evident in his well-planned execution of the movie, which was tailored to the preferences of the audience. With the release of mass action movies in Tamil and Telugu, I had often wondered when the Malayalam film industry would produce such commercially successful films. The director Nahas Hidayath has answered this question through his film RDX.

The screenplay of RDX is an absolute masterpiece, deserving of thunderous applause. Every single scene was crafted with precision and adhered to the proper format, resulting in a fully immersive experience that kept me engaged from start to finish. The screenplay flowed seamlessly, following the story’s natural progression without a single moment of lag or boredom. The reasons behind each scene were expertly explained, leaving no room for doubt or confusion. The emotions conveyed in the screenplay were flawlessly executed, allowing me to connect with the characters and their experiences on a deep level.

The relationship between the father and sons was particularly well-written, with actor Lal delivering a powerful performance as the father figure. Antony Varghese and Shane Nigam also shone in their roles as the sons, navigating through various challenges with authenticity and heart. The emotional bond between the three characters was palpable, and director Nahas Hidayath captured their love and affection in a way that truly resonated with me. Furthermore, the element of friendship was a crucial factor in RDX, with the characters played by Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese, and Neeraj Madhav sharing a deep connection that was beautifully portrayed on screen. The way they united to solve their problems was executed with finesse, leaving me hooked and engaged throughout the film. So, RDX is a triumph of storytelling, with a screenplay that is both compelling and authentic.

The movie’s first half is a masterful blend of present-day scenes and flashbacks. Right from the start, the film packs a punch with Antony Varghese’s first action sequence at the church festival. The story takes an unexpected turn, and the flashback scenes are revealed, all while we witness the romantic chemistry between Shane Nigam and Mahima Nambiar. I was worried that these scenes would drag on, but the director and writers expertly maintained the perfect flow. Nahas Hidayath and the scriptwriters portrayed the romantic scenes in a fair way, using them to propel the movie forward. The fight between the heroes and villains had a convincing and valid reason, making it more engaging. The characters were brilliantly written, with each one given ample space to perform. Vishnu Agasthya’s villainous character was exceptionally well-written and stands out as one of the best in recent Malayalam cinema.

The first half of the film concludes with a series of high-octane action scenes, which serve as a prelude to the main plot. The second half of the film is characterized by a mood of revenge, as the heroes seek to avenge themselves against their adversaries. The standout scene of the film is undoubtedly the confrontation between Shane Nigam, Antony Varghese, and Neeraj Madhav against the villainous gang in the colony. The use of karate skills and the confidence of the three heroes in their ability to fight back against their foes is truly breathtaking. The tension of the action sequences is palpable, and I found myself biting my nails in anticipation at many moments. The boat fight sequences featuring Shane Nigam are particularly impressive, and the climax of the film is filled with captivating moments. I was literally getting goosebumps during the climax, which is characterized by massive and terrific actions. The moment in which Babu Antony enters the fray is particularly noteworthy, as his martial arts skills are truly spectacular and a treat to watch. I would like to extend my thanks to Nahas Hidayath and the writers for giving Babu Antony the much-needed screen space he deserves. The ending of the film is completely satisfying, and the tail-end action sequences left me doubly happy.

•PERFORMANCE OF ACTORS :

RDX has the casting of Antony Varghese, Shane Nigam, Neeraj Madhav, Babu Antony, Lal, Vishnu Agasthya, Mahima Nambiar, Maala Parvathi, Baiju Santosh Kumar and many more. All the actors in the film did a great job, there are many actors in the film and I don’t know their names but everyone did an incredible performance especially the actors in the villain gang. Antony Varghese, Shane Nigam and Neeraj Madhav are the three heroes of RDX and three of them gave their best for their characters. Among the three of them personally, I loved Antony Varghese more. His way of fighting and the style he had in his punch was awesome. The dialogue delivery and expression of Antony Varghese was also notable. The facial expressions of Antony Varghese during the fight sequence and emotional scenes were intense. Shane Nigam also did a brilliant job. I was having doubts about whether he would be able to do the action sequences but he nailed it. His karate skills and the way he fights were impressive and the heroic feel was all over seen in his performance. Neeraj Madhav looked stylish with his long hair and did a terrific job of doing the action sequences. His Karate moves were so fast and his fighting style was so amazing to watch. The way Neeraj Madhav used Nunchuks (karate sticks) was shocking and it was like a really trained one. Three of them performed magnificently and it’s the best in their career. Lal as the father was a perfect choice and he did honestly. The emotional scenes were safer in his hands and the combination of scenes with Antony Varghese and Shane Nigam was touching. Vishnu Agasthya shined as the villain. I didn’t think he would perform in a flawless way, his intense look and the shades of villain were beautiful to watch. His character had given a tough fight and I’m sure in future he will get many good notable roles, he is such a talented actor. Mahima Nambiar as the heroine also performed well and the combination scenes with Shane Nigam worked well to set the romantic mood. Babu Antony in the climax portion delivered a massive action sequence and it’s one of the major highlights of RDX. Aima Rosmy Sebastian, Nishanth Sagar, Maala Parvathi and Baiju Santosh Kumar had crucial roles and everyone did justice to their respective characters.

• MUSIC AND TECHNICAL ASPECTS :

The musical work for the film is composed by Sam C.S. which includes the background score. The film has two songs and both songs are really good. The song “Halaballo’ sung by Benny Dayal, Ranjith K Govind, Naresh Iyer and Sam C.S. was powerful with stunning beats. The vocals of the singers were also matching for the song and the visuals of heroes doing action set the premise of a heroic feel. The lyrics of Manu Manjith were also fair and the words had the power to showcase a mass appeal. The song “Scene Mone” sung by Neeraj Madhav emphasizes the atmosphere of a rap vibe with a catchy tune and lyrics. The lyrics by the singer Neeraj Madhav had meaningful words and the spirit to give motivation. The way Neeraj sang the song is brilliant and the video released on YouTube with the visuals is a treat to watch. The song ‘Neela Nilave’ was an unexpected romantic track and loved the dance and combination scenes of Shane Nigam and Mahima Nambiar.

As an action movie, the importance of the background score is crucial to set the impact and in RDX the composer Sam C.S. had given the right set of appropriate background tunes. Whenever the important scenes are taking place it has the backup of provoking tunes to give the right impact. In action scenes, the striking background score helps to lift the mood of the scene and while watching we will feel additional energy. All the background score used in the climax portion was impressive and helped to build the mood of tension and excitement. Emotional scenes had also the support of a good background score especially in the scenes of father-sons.

The choreographer duo Anabriv also known as Anbumani and Arivumani was hired to do the action sequences and they gave the right thrilling and brilliant action sequences. I was stunned by seeing the action sequences in the film and I’m sure they can only choreograph such massive action sequences. They are the backbone of this film and it’s one of their best and finest works. The cinematography by Alex J. Pulickal was also tremendous because the camera movements and the placement of the camera had no single kind of error. The way the camera angles shift to another side was shocking and the sudden movements that were used in action sequences will blow your mind. The various camera angles, the closeup shots and the wide-angle frames were beautiful to watch. For every action movie a cameraman like Alex J. Pulickal is needed, great impressive work. The editing of Chaman Chakko was also crisp and clear, no sort of mismatches were felt and the transitions of scenes were also perfect. The running time of 151 minutes didn’t feel long and the proper editing helped for a smooth engaging watch.

• CONCLUSION :

So overall, the film RDX gave me a massive and unforgettable theatre experience and I loved watching every single bit of the film. RDX is crammed with high-octane actions and I’m sure one will be engaged within the film. The direction of Nahad Hidayath was excellent and the script of the movie has the right components to attract anyone. Without any doubt, I will surely recommend RDX to everyone and kindly watch this energetic must-watch film on the big screen. RDX is a real example of an action treat and it’s one of the best commercial movies of this year, please don’t miss it. The real Onam winner is here, RDX 🔥

The title of a movie plays an important role as the audience has expectations of the film. RDX is such a movie which created hype with its title before its release.

Robert, Dony, and Xavier (RDX) are the three major characters in the movie. And it’s a pretty smart move to finalise this title.

RDX is a movie that is aimed as an action entertainer. Action choreography and the way it’s executed are some of the elements that keep the audience watching the movie.

RDX has a plot that has revenge, romance, and songs — some of the common ingredients for a mass entertainer. It also has the background of Perunnal (Church festival) where fights happen.

Movies such as Angamaly Diaries (2017) and Porinju Mariyam Jose (2019) also have these festivals in their plot, and the core story revolves around this.

In RDX , the story starts with a Perunnal where a fight happens when Dony encounters a gang that picks up a quarrel with his father Philip (Lal).

In retaliation to this issue, the same gang attacks Dony and his family in the middle of the night. Damage is done in this scene as Robert and Xavier are alerted.

The RDX team unites again to take revenge for this brutal attack.

The camera now pans to the past of the trio who get well-trained in martial arts, especially Karate. The three-man gang have a lavish lifestyle as they belong to wealthy families.

Dony and Robert are brothers and Xavier is the son of their martial arts teacher Antony (Babu Antony). They are good friends, too, and the director creates enough and more fight sequences for the actors.

However, the issues created by the trio become a headache for the families.

To make matters worse, the RDX gang gets involved in a brawl with a group of people in a colony during the Carnival in Kochi. After this incident, the three men aren’t much involved in street fights. But they have an enemy who wants to take revenge.

This story is all about his revenge and how the RDX team tackle the situation.

Debutant director Nahas Hidhayath pens a usual revenge story. But the screenplay by Adarsh Sukumaran and Shabhas gave it the comical elements.

RDX has beautifully choreographed fight scenes that form its soul.

Even though the family story, the flick moves forward with the swag of three main actors — Antony Varghese, Neeraj Madhav and Shane Nigam.

It also has a song sung by Neeraj Madhav, which gives momentum to the action scenes directed by Anbarivu.

The composition by Sam CS gives a rhythm to the movie and the background music gives goosebumps to the youngsters.

Since the plot is based on fights, the film has 6-8 action sequences.

The Carnival fight and the climax fight scenes are exceptional ones. The actors did their part well in here.

Antony Varghese already has a fanbase with his action films like Angamaly Diaries and Ajagajantharam (2021).

But Babu Antony, who himself is a martial arts specialist, should have been given extra action sequences.

Interestingly, a fight sequence has been given to Mahima Nambiar who plays the role of Mini. She has a good role as the pair of Robert.

Performance-wise, Neeraj Madhav has an interesting role — with both serious and comical moments. A dancer himself, the actor shines as a fighter too, in RDX .

Antony Varghese can be the next bankable actor. His admirers can be seen cheering inside the theatre for his action scenes. He did a decent job.

Shane Nigam, who is also a dancer, did well in the action scenes.

Each actor has been given equal importance in this action entertainer.

Vishnu Agasthya is at his best as the main antagonist Paulson. Earlier, he proved his mettle in offbeat films and even the recent movie O Baby .

Being an action film, female actors don’t have much to do. However, Mahima Nambiar as Mini delivers a good performance.

Lal as Philip gets nothing much to perform, but his character is relevant to the plot.

Babu Antony too is good in action scenes.
