Welcome to AskMurdoch, a convenient tool to help you find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about studying at uni, applying to Murdoch and student life. If you need any further assistance you can submit a question to our team who will help you with your enquiry.

How can we help you?

Graduate entry to law / llb /juris doctor.

  • What happened to the Juris Doctor degree at Murdoch?
  • What advanced standing/credits could I gain towards the graduate entry law course?

Juris Doctor/Law degrees

The Juris Doctor degree, or JD, has been replaced at Murdoch in recent years by the graduate entry version of Law/LLB. The name change reflects similar law degree courses in the UK and Asia, and most other law degrees in Australia. However, most universities in the USA still call their law degrees Juris Doctor. Evidence suggests the name change makes little difference to most employers of law graduates.

Advanced standing

Students with a completed undergraduate degree will receive 24 credit points (equivalent to one year full-time study load) of advanced standing when entering into the  B1340 Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry) course.

Students who enter into the Law/LLB course via the graduate entry route will need to complete 72 credit points in order to graduate. You should consult the University Handbook afor an initial study paln (under the 'Course Plans' heading).  Additionally, if you require further help, your Academic Chair  can provide assistance with your first year enrolment. The study plan will help you schedule your units so you can complete this degree within three years of full-time study if required.

How to apply

You need to follow these steps to apply for the graduate entry into the LLB: 1.      Apply online for the  B1340 Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry)  course  2.     Request for an Advanced Standing Assessment in the application process (Tick Box) 3.     Provide your completed Bachelor's degree documents. Once you have an offer, someone from the Accreditations and Advanced Standing Team will award you with the 24 credit points of advanced standing. Students with an incomplete law degree may request further exemptions with the Accreditation and Advanced Standing Team.
