The word “capstone” originally referred to the decorative, final piece of masonry that would be affixed to the top of a new building. But in terms of schooling, what is a capstone project? Academically, “capstone” is a fitting metaphor, as a capstone project serves as a culminating, crowning illustration of your scholarly work. The capstone project synthesizes the learning you have done in various fields, demonstrates your level of expertise in your specific area of study, and often marks the end or milestone moment of a current study path. In short, it’s a big achievement! In this article, we’ve outlined a few tips for cultivating your perfect capstone thesis and have included a list of capstone project ideas to get you started.

General Capstone Writing Tips

As you select a topic for your capstone project, be sure to consider the following criteria:

Personal Interest . A capstone project is meant to be the culmination of or milestone representing your specific path of study; as such, it should be a project that actually interests you! Perhaps you’ve already been working on a passion project or long-term scholarly paper on a topic that excites you. Or maybe you’ve heard about a specific branch of inquiry within your field that you find compelling and want to explore further. Whether you’re new to a specific capstone subject or have been working on it for a while, it’s important to know that your actual interest in a subject can increase your productivity and learning. Existing Research . For any new piece of scholarship, it’s crucial to thoroughly understand and acknowledge the current knowledge and findings that exist around your thesis. As an advancing practitioner in your field of study or profession, you should already have a sense of what other scholars and experts have said about your capstone project idea, but this is a moment to fully explore: Who are the major players in this professional or scholarly conversation? What are the most important pieces of research that ground this field of study? What recent innovations have been made in this topic?

Stakes . If you’ve ever been involved in a debate or had to write a persuasive speech , you know that an important question to answer is: “So what?” Why is this capstone project idea important? What will be affected if the ideas in your capstone do or do not come to pass? What exactly is at stake here?

Examples Continued

Stakeholders . The stakeholders of a capstone are those who will be affected by the information in your project. Perhaps you’ve already engaged in community service and have seen a gap that can be filled by your particular area of expertise. Maybe you are one of the stakeholders in your research. In every capstone project, your readers should know who will be most important to your work.

Identify a gap or problem . If you’ve done your research properly, then you now know what current holes or gaps exist in your field. Make sure you frame your capstone so that your audience is aware of the work that needs to be done.

Fill the gap . This is your moment to shine! What is your specific hypothesis? What kind of research will you conduct to prove it? Specifically, how is your work contributing to this field of study? To this profession?

Feasibility and Scope . The last question you need to ask yourself is: Can I actually do this project? Do you have the time and resources to complete the work you’re proposing? Is your capstone actually doable? If you find that your project seems too big, don’t despair! Many capstone project ideas can be narrowed down for specificity and feasibility. Take a look at the example below:

Very broad:

“What are some recent developments in women’s health research?”

More specific and feasible:

“What are the most current findings on early diagnostic testing and maternal health outcomes amongst American women?”

Below, we’ve listed 150 capstone project examples in various fields. Think of all of these focus questions and ideas as jumping-off points. Some are very broad, while others are much more specific. Your capstone project will most likely fall under the “specific” category (see “feasibility and scope” above), but broader topics and focus questions can get you started down the path of your own particular branch of research.

Capstone Projects

Environmental Studies students major in a wide range of fields across campus, and their senior year Capstone Projects reflect that breadth and scope. At the end of each year, students share their capstones in a symposium-style event, where we also get to celebrate the excellent work they have done! Below is an archive of many such projects, compiled from recent years of student work.

ENST Minors 2020

This year’s graduation was unlike any other, occurring under the specter of the coronavirus pandemic and its associated implications. The Capstone Symposium was held on Zoom in April, but using that platform didn’t diminish the impact of these excellent projects!

December 2019 Grads

Melissa Zheng , a Management major in the MSB, graduated in December 2019, and for her ENST capstone participated in a research project with a faculty mentor under the auspices of the International Food Policy Research Institute.

May 2020 Grads

Title: “The Pear Tree” — Emily Arnold , who focused her studies at Georgetown on English, used her passion for words to explore how humans connect to physical space and how this shapes our perception of our environment. Her capstone project consisted of two distinct projects: “The Pear Tree”, a 52-page collection of poems; and “Tree of Letters”, a sculpture of a tree made of wire and paper mache with recycled pages (pictured above). This project succinctly captures Emily’s studies for the last four years; she reflects, “‘The Tree of Letters’ considers the relationship between trees and written language and comments on the chosen form, poems, to convey the ideas in my Thesis.”

Title: Financing the Future of Clean Energy & Technology: An Examination of the Funding Gap & An Analysis of Alternative Investment Vehicles  — Julia Choi , an Economics major in the College, wrote a paper on the world of investments and finance when it comes to clean energy technology. In her paper she outlines the challenges clean energy companies encounter in financing their projects. She then dives into potential new investment vehicles for the funding of clean energy, and examines the role of both the public and private sectors in clean energy innovation. 

Title: “Discarded Narratives” — After years of interest in the environmental impacts of medical waste, JUPS major Maddy Rice decided to do something productive with single-use medical products. Her project, “Discarded Narratives”, aims to “reclaim the discarded stories and objects of the medical industrial complex”. She worked to collect medical waste and create art that had an impact on viewers and shifted the current modes of storytelling. Her first project was a bamboo garden constructed entirely of discarded medicine bottles, and she intends to continue her work. You can learn more about “Discarded Narratives” here . 

Title: “Environmental Education through Play and Learning for Grade R Students in South Africa” — Jinia Sarkar , a Human Science major in the SFS, completed her capstone project while studying abroad in South Africa. For the community engagement portion of her program, Jinia volunteered at Ikaya Primary School, planning lessons and organizing activities for the students. Throughout her time there, she designed and painted an educational play area for the community with environmental themes.

Title: Climate Change and Environmental Degradation — Lucy Stebbins , a government major with a background in Catholicism, found inspiration from Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and decided to delve into the environmental perspectives of the Church. She analyzed a variety of environmental challenges we face today, paying special attention to how these issues disproportionately affect marginalized communities. She also focused on the commitments the Catholic Church has made to care for the planet and how these tie into the fundamental values of the Church, and synthesized the two by selecting passages from the Pope’s encyclical: “Today, however, we have to realize that a true ecological approach always becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” — Pope Francis, Laudato Si’

Once again, this year’s class showed remarkable resilience and dedication to their work, concluding their studies during an unprecedented virtual year. Despite this, the culminating capstone projects were outstanding, covering a wide array of environmental issues and collectively representing a hopeful sign of transformative potential. Here are excerpts from these truly excellent projects:

Title: “Energy Grid Analysis in the European Context: The Supergrid and Microgrids” >> Zachary Allen , a Government major in the College, wrote a paper on the “European Super Grid,” a plan to develop a massive energy grid to connect participating countries. The paper explores the strengths and weaknesses of the grid, and specialization of energy sources with it. 

Title: “Climate Change, Environmental Degradation, and Refugees” >> Hallie Bereday studies Psychology in the College. For her Environmental Studies capstone project, she produced a sixty-page paper (a version is available here (new window) ) on the “multifaceted nature of displaced people in a modernized world,” focusing on the Rohingya in Myanmar and Bangladesh and the people of Tuvalu in the Pacific Islands and New Zealand. 

Title: “Profile of a Tree” >> For her capstone project, English major Kathryn Blanco undertook an ambitious and poignant profile of a single tree (which she called “Tili”), and in doing so illuminated an intricate web of histories and connections. As her study concluded, “if humans and trees are to coexist peacefully in the city, we must learn to treat our street trees as the neighbors they are.”

Title: “Global Connectivity & the Commons: An Analysis on the Relationship between Place, Identify, and the Environment” >> Melanie Diaz, a Culture and Politics major in the SFS, focused her project on the connections between people, the environment, choices, and agency. Melanie interviewed six individuals from different backgrounds about their relationship to place and the environment, and compiled common threads and teachings into an audio artifact and presentation. 

Title: “A Rose” >> For his capstone project, Alberto Espiricueta, inspired by his Environmental Studies course “Ecotopian Visions,” wrote a short story following a girl in a futuristic community that exists without policing, where the unhoused are cared for, and resources, though scarce, are shared. The story is “an ode to [his] community of Southeast Los Angeles and the environmental justice advocates who reside [there].” It envisions a world beyond capitalism and war: an ecotopia of sorts. 

Title: “Funding Relocation as an Adaptation Strategy to Coastline Erosion: Indigenous Alaskan Villages” >> Maya Gibbs wrote an academic paper analyzing climate-induced relocation of Alaskan Indigenous communities. The Arctic is warming at an alarming rate, and Maya’s paper analyzes how a just and equitable response to climate change in the region might be implemented, particularly how to fund and support relocation for coastal indigenous communities. 

Title: “Combating Climate Change Misinformation” >> Using her experience as a Government major, Charlotte McCarthy’s capstone project came in the form of a policy memo, addressed to the current EPA administrator. The memo detailed the importance of, and strategies for, combating climate change misinformation in the general public. 

Title: “The Importance of Optimism in Environmental Journalism” >> Lauren Pyjar, an International Politics major in the SFS, used her experience working at Eat.Blue, an online educational platform about ocean conservation, as the basis for her capstone project. Lauren wrote a paper describing her experience writing articles for the site, highlighting the importance of positivity and optimism in writing about environmentalism and conservation: “Change is inspired by hope, not fear.”

Title: “Protect our Waterways” >> Paul Rothrock, an Economics major, created a website about his relationship to the waterways of the Pacific Northwest, and the importance of protecting them. The site includes stunning photographs of the northwest and its water, along with information on water pollution and protection. 

Title: “Recommendation for the Passage of a Modified RECOVER Act” >> Liza Roberts studies Chinese and Government along with Environmental Studies. For her capstone project Liza wrote a paper detailing the need for comprehensive investment in and development of innovative local recycling systems to tackle the pressing issue of waste management in the United States. 

Title: “A Look Into Sustainable Investing” >> Anne Stonecipher , a student in the MSB studying Finance and Operations and Information Management, wrote a paper on the emerging world of sustainable investing, outlining its importance from an environmental and a business perspective. 

Title: “Biden in the First 100 Days” >> For his capstone project, Alandro Valdez used his studies in both Environmental Studies and Government to produce six detailed infographics outlining environmental policies enacted and planned by the Biden Administration in the first 100 days in office. The in-depth and well-designed infographics cover the international climate actions, land conservation efforts, environmental justice policies, plans to halt oil and gas extraction, and more.

2. Research: Guide students in conducting thorough research related to their chosen topics. This phase is essential for building a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding, which will inform the entire capstone journey.

3. Project Management & Planning: Teach project management skills that enable students to break their projects into manageable steps. Encourage students to create a quarter, semester, or year-long plan, depending on the duration of the capstone project. This stage emphasizes effective organization and time management, ensuring that progress remains steady.

4. Project Implementation & Documentation: This is the heart of the capstone journey. Students actively work on their projects, translating ideas into tangible outcomes. Simultaneously, they document and reflect on their progress, challenges, and successes to create a comprehensive record to draw from during their final presentations.

5. Final Presentation/Showcase: Offer students the opportunity to present their finished projects to an audience of key stakeholders at a culminating showcase event. This stage hones communication and public speaking skills, allowing learners to articulate their findings, insights, and the learning journey itself.

By seamlessly weaving these elements into the fabric of existing courses, you create a continuous connection from ninth grade to twelfth grade.

The EVS curriculum culminates in the final year of the EVS program with a two-semester capstone research experience. Under the mentorship of  a UT faculty member, students bring all of their education and experience to bear on a research question or issue that is of personal interest and importance to them. This research culminates in a final report including a research abstract, as well as in the creation of a research poster, suitable for presentation at professional conferences.  Students are also eligible to submit a proposal for a Capstone Research Award; see below for more details.

NOTE : Current EVS students preparing to conduct their Capstone Research Project should review and complete a Capstone Research Contract with their faculty mentor prior to beginning their research. EVS students must submit a signed contract to the EVS Program Office by the 4th class day of the semester enrolled to avoid being dropped from EVS 271 or  EVS 371.

The Environmental Studies Capstone Project is a three credit group research project. The Capstone Project meets the Finishing Foundation (FF) requirements for the Foundational Studies Program. All capstone projects have an external sponsor, and culminate with a poster presentation at the (spring) Undergraduate Research Conference at Boise State. Sustainability Capstone

The sustainability program offers two capstones: independent research and consulting.

ENVR 599 Independent Research Capstone  provides you with an opportunity to complete an original study related to your personal or professional interests within sustainability and environmental management.  ENVR 599a Consulting for Sustainability Solutions Capstone  offers you the experience of consulting for a real-world organization to offer them a customized, carefully designed and well-researched Sustainability Action Plan (SAP). You complete the work for either capstone in a classroom setting with fellow degree candidates, all of whom are working towards the same goal.

Registration for the capstone is the same as a course, but your capstone topic and capstone proposal (research plan) must be approved many months in advance by registering in the noncredit Capstone Proposal Tutorial.

The Capstone Project for the Joint and Dual MS degrees is an opportunity for students to address a real-world environmental problem by integrating their E-IPER and professional school coursework in an interdisciplinary project. Students present their Projects at the Capstone Symposium, held at the end of each quarter in which students are completing projects. Students have the freedom to generate their own project ideas. Projects could involve any of the following: 

  • Further development of a project initiated in a prior or concurrent project-based course (taken while enrolled in the Joint and Dual MS degree)
  • Collaboration with an off-campus client on a current environmentally related problem (e.g., by expanding on a summer internship) 
  • Collaboration with a business or entrepreneur to develop a business plan for a new venture
  • Collaboration with a Stanford faculty member or E-IPER PhD student on a relevant research project

The Capstone Project addresses current challenges within the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals and are focused on eradicating poverty, inequality, and climate change.

As a non-engineering student, I thought I wouldn’t be able to contribute much to the Capstone Project. I was wrong. I consider myself very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with students from various backgrounds with similar interest in helping countries achieve sustainable development.

In such a short time, we were able to invent a product that we named “GeoWater” for the Afar region in Ethiopia, which provides safe drinking water to regions near geothermal sites. Not only have I learned so much about sustainable energy, I have also gained interpersonal teamwork skills, which is very important for my future.

Student Research and Senior Capstones

The capstone course centers around activities that help students reflect on their knowledge about sustainability and bring together threads from diverse disciplines to create an integrated understanding of contemporary sustainability issues. Students work as a group on a common research project. This case study gives students a concrete portfolio example of the multifaceted nature of a “real life” sustainability issue.

Research Opportunities

In addition to their capstone experience, students often collaborate with faculty on long-standing research projects, sometimes presenting research at the Virginia Academy of Sciences. Their abstracts have been published in the peer-reviewed Virginia Journal of Science.

In 2014 several professors launched a stream restoration project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Federation . Science, peacebuilding and digital media majors are working together to document and restore streams in a rural community about 30 miles from campus.

Biology professor Doug Graber-Neufeld worked with the National Science Foundation for years to take students to Cambodia and Thailand to work alongside local scientists on issues of drinking water quality and sewage treatment. Professor Jim Yoder collaborates in-the-field with Shenandoah National Park research botanists and interested undergraduate students on studies of rare plant species in the area.

Students may compete  for Kauffman-Miller Research Awards , up to for $2500 for summer research supervised by EMU faculty. 

Recent Capstones

New municipal stormwater management policy.

A group of students in this course examined a recently adopted stormwater ordinance through ecological and sociological lenses. The students attended meetings and conducted interviews with city officials, collected data from public documents and performed analyses using GIS software. Their results were shared with the city public works department and other relevant institutional stakeholders.

  • “Stormwater Management: The Effectiveness of Public Policy in Driving the Shift to ‘Green Innovations’”
  • “The Harrisonburg Stormwater Utility Fee, the Effectiveness of Mitigation Practices, and EMU’s Future Role in Stewardship”
  • “Impervious Surface and Stormwater Management: A Review of Current Understanding and Initiatives in Harrisonburg, VA”

Proposed wilderness areas in the George Washington National Forest

Students in this capstone worked with Friends of Shenandoah Mountain to develop informational material for several proposed wilderness areas in the nearby George Washington National Forest. Much of the discussion centered on how this interacts with recent proposals for windmills on nearby ridgelines. The main outcome of this project was GIS -based informational material, which was made available to the Friends of Shenandoah Mountain.

Potential hydrofracking site in Rockingham County

Students in this course worked with a group of residents from the Bergton area of Rockingham County on the issue of hydrofracking. A site near Bergton was originally proposed as a hydrofracking site, which would have been the first hydrofracking site in the state of Virginia. Gas leases have been signed, but county permits have not been issued, and at present there is no drilling.

Students had extensive discussions with an informal coalition of Bergton area residents who were concerned about hydrofracking. From these discussions, a public viewing of the movie “Gasland” was organized. Following the movie, students facilitated an open discussion period for community members.

A Powerful Sequel: Masters Capstone Projects in Environmental Data Science

The next generation of environmental scientists are data scientists – a sentiment that NCEAS and the UCSB Bren School recognized when they founded the Masters of Environmental Data Science program in 2021. Our second cohort of 31 MEDS students just graduated and ready to tackle new environmental data science challenges. To mark the end of their accelerated, 11 month education, students presented their Capstone Projects to the public on June 2, 2023. These projects highlighted data driven solutions to environmental problems for clients spanning academia, industry, non-profit, and government. 

A short synopsis of all eight Capstone Projects are below. According to Naomi Tague, Bren School Professor and MEDS Capstone advisor, “It’s not just that these students have learned a bunch of environmental data science techniques, they’ve also learned to deal with stakeholders, to think about messy data and their clients’ needs. They learn project management while also thinking deeply about environmental problems.” As she summarized: “I feel really good about year two of our MEDS program.”

How One Construction Administration Alum Is Challenging the Way the Industry Measures Value

“The scholar-practitioner model makes it like no other program in the U.S.” says Tanya Deegoju (’23SPS, CNAD) when describing the  M.S. in Construction Administration at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies (SPS).

Deegoju was hired as a project analyst for Turner & Townsend following a seven-month internship with the global professional services company during her final year at SPS. In a recent chat, she shared what initially attracted her to the program and how her time at SPS helped her transition from student to intern and ultimately industry professional.

What initially attracted you to Columbia’s M.S. in Construction Administration program?

What drew me to the M.S. in Construction Administration program at Columbia is something I've shared often with new students in public forums, and even during job interviews. There’s no better program in the U.S. in which industry leaders from New York City, managing mega-projects worth millions, come together to share the best practices right in our classrooms. These professionals aren’t academicians; they’re leaders who are active in their fields and aim to make us leaders too. Our classes were in the evenings, allowing us to get involved in their projects during the day.

Instead of typical assignments, we worked on case studies, project reports, presentations, business proposals, and biddings—practical, real-world scenarios. That’s exactly what I was looking for: something real and hands-on. This program gave me, as an international candidate, a true sense of the U.S. market and how things operate here. Plus, doing all this right in the heart of New York City was the best experience ever!

Can you tell us about your capstone project?

My capstone project, titled “Quality as a Currency,” explores the concept that quality should be the primary metric for assessing the value of construction projects, rather than just cost or time. Inspired by John Ruskin's quote, “Quality is never incidental; it is always the result of  intelligent intentional effort,” my thesis argues that quality encompasses more than technical specifications.

The capstone project examines how current Project Quality Plans (PQPs) typically focus on technical  dimensions and often overlook non-technical aspects such as socio-economic impact, community well-being, cultural significance, and environmental sustainability. The tool I developed, referred to as Unity, seeks to redefine how we measure the success and value of construction projects by emphasizing the importance of quality in all its facets, thus pushing the industry to adopt a more integrated and forward-thinking approach to project management. Through the research, I created a comprehensive framework that incorporates both technical and non-technical quality dimensions, ensuring that project managers can deliver more holistic and impactful construction projects. 

Congratulations on being awarded The Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Scholarship. Can you tell us what this recognition means to you?

Thank you! Receiving the CMAA Scholarship has been incredibly meaningful to me. The  CMAA Metro NY/NJ Chapter Scholarship Award reinforced my decision to pursue a career in the U.S. construction industry. 

I am honored and proud to receive this recognition from such a prestigious national organization. Attending the award ceremony, where over 200 industry leaders from prominent firms and public departments in New York and New Jersey gathered, inspired me. The award was the beginning of my full-scale exposure to the US construction industry. I went on to be the Women in Construction representative at  NYBuild and received recognition from Columbia SPS Dean Troy Eggers in his inaugural speech at graduation. The reputational impact has been astronomical and I couldn’t have asked for it to be any other way!

Currently, you are a Project Analyst for Turner & Townsend, where you also worked as an intern. How did your time at Columbia SPS prepare you for your current role?

The transition to the industry through  Turner & Townsend has been a fulfilling one. Recently, while submitting my employee visa paperwork, I had to describe how my work at the company relates to my master's degree. This exercise made me realize just how much my strong work ethic, practices, and knowledge come from my time at Columbia. 

Going through my transcripts, I could clearly see how the learnings, case studies, and project work from the M.S. in Construction Administration program directly applied to my projects at Turner & Townsend. One particular mega project in New York City required me to revisit foundational concepts, as our project management team was responsible for overseeing project performance in all aspects, from budget and contract compliance to client interfacing, project management planning, schedules, key deliverables, resource management, and field visit guidance. I could confidently bring innovative solutions and industry concepts to my work because of the solid foundation the program provided.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in pursuing their master's degrees in Construction Administration at Columbia?

Be ready to relearn, rediscover, and rebrand yourself. Follow in the footsteps of others who have left strong impressions in the paths you want to walk. Learn from their mistakes, take—and leave behind your own legacy for the next generation to follow.

University of Canberra’s Capstone Expo Emphasizes Technology’s Social Impact

From University of Canberra students exploring how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can make home care services more empowering, to creating a management system for a social enterprise for women from migrant and refugee backgrounds, the recent Capstone Project Expo highlighted how technology and systems can be effective catalysts for social impact.

The Expo is the culmination of the Capstone unit, which sees undergrad and postgrad students at the  School of Information Technology and Systems  (ITS) – part of UC’s  Faculty of Science and Technology  – dedicate a whole semester to one project, which reflects real world problems and challenges.

Each project is sponsored by an industry partner or University academic; at the end of each semester, the top projects are spotlighted at the Expo, held this year at the Ann Harding Centre.

“The Capstone Project Expo is one of the biggest ITS events showcasing the skills of our excellent students and celebrating their achievements,” said Assistant Professor Richa Awasthy, one of the Capstone unit convenors.

“It brings our students together with academics and industry practitioners within the ACT region and beyond, providing networking opportunities and leading to future collaborations – creating an environment aligned with UC’s spirit of Galambany, within which all work together to turn their ideas into impactful reality.”

She added that the Capstone unit was a valuable early testing ground and incubator for new ideas, in which students can demonstrate their capacity for developing something valuable.

This year, students presented on a wide range of topics and applications, including EmoSense, an emotion-recognition app that analyses brainwaves; the applications of virtual and mixed reality in mental health care and rehab; and understanding and improving the effectiveness of ISEQ, the student experience questionnaire.

The opportunity to work for and with industry partners is one of the Capstone unit’s biggest draws. This enables students to formulate and test innovative solutions to real world problems; work with and learn from industry, and inform industry processes; and build valuable interpersonal and communication skills.

“The students have demonstrated teamwork, managed projects, and responded to changing customer requirements to deliver expected project outcomes. Within this unit, we see them being transformed into professionals ready for the workforce, through their engagement with industry practitioners and academics,” Assistant Professor Awasthy said.

This year’s Expo saw William Friend, Kate Hanbury, Dannyra Heng and Jack Kitto take top spot in the Best Poster category. The team also scored the People’s Choice Award, which was sponsored by Microsoft. Presented for the first time this year, the latter was based on a real-time audience vote.

The group created a kitchen management system to improve operations for Her Kitchen Table (HKT), a social enterprise offering home-cooked meals from women from migrant and refugee backgrounds in Canberra. The project was sponsored by Nazia Ahmed from The Social Outcomes Lab, parent company for HKT.

The best project category was won by Chris McCourt, Quang Pham, Adrielle Delos Santos and Oliver Witrzens, whose project was titled “A grainy image: provenancing of river sediments by machine learning analysis of sediment images”. This project was sponsored by Associate Professor Jurian Hoogerwerf and Dr Girija Chetty, the School of ITS and the ACT Government.

Taking out the Best Presentation category for their work on empowering generative AI in home care services were Jyotsna Gaur, ABS Hasan, Huynh Nguyen and Somya Shukla, their project sponsored by Adjunct Professor Tony Kwan and Hope Holistic Care.

“Our focus was to build an AI-driven chatbot to help staff in home care services to address queries quickly and effectively, and we were keen to develop a multilingual model as well,” Ms Gaur said, in her presentation.

The judging panel comprised of Jenalle Bushby (Australian Computer Society, ACS), Yvonne Soper (Careers UC) and Dr Carlos Noschang Kuhn (Research Chair in Open Source Technologies at the University).

“The ACS is very much about providing support to students, and this event is always a great opportunity to do so,” said Ms Bushby, who also encouraged University of Canberra students to take advantage of the  12-month complimentary membership  provided by the ACS as part of the organisation’s Professional Partnership Program with the University of Canberra.

“It was a privilege to evaluate the students’ work and witness their innovative ideas with support from their professors and industry mentors. We’ve seen how much hard work has obviously gone into every team project, and the teamwork they have displayed is very valuable,” she said.

Ms Bushby cited the communications skills demonstrated by the student groups as particularly important, allowing them to bridge the knowledge gap with stakeholders who didn’t come from an IT background.

Project sponsor Drew Horsell, Founder and Managing Director of Horsell, agreed – and commented that the fresh ideas and diversity in the room at the Expo were particularly heartening.

“In the approach to using technology to solve the problems and challenges of society, we truly need the kind of inquisitive minds and rich diversity that I see in this room,” he said, addressing the student groups.

“Please continue to ask questions, challenge the status quo, and make old guys like me think differently!”
