WASHINGTON (TND) — A group of GOP lawmakers with military backgrounds penned a letter to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday condemning claims about his military service.

The Democratic vice presidential candidate has draw scrutiny over his claim to have served as a command sergeant major, a position he was allegedly never officially granted by the National Guard. Writing to Walz, some 50 Republican members of Congress explained the claims have shaken his public trust.

“As veterans who have served our nation, we feel compelled to address your egregious misrepresentations and urge you to come clean to the American people,” the letter, led by Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., reads .

Continuing, the lawmakers explained Walz’s alleged fibs prove he is unfit to serve the president during a time of war should he become vice president.

“In short, our grave concerns stem from the fact that the office of the vice president is one heartbeat away from becoming the commander in chief,” the letter, written on Trump-Vance letterhead, reads. “You’ve already demonstrated your unwillingness to lead in time of war and a lack of honor through your blatant misrepresentations exploiting and co-opting the experiences of America’s combat veterans for personal gain.”

American veterans, the lawmakers wrote, are “rightfully concerned” about the potential of a Walz presidency.

“Until you admit you lied to them, there is no way you can be trusted to serve as vice president,” the letter concludes.

The governor's rank is just one aspect of his service career that has drawn scrutiny. Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, this month attacked Gov. Walz over his decision to leave the National Guard before the Iraq War.

“When the United States of America asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did it,” Sen. Vance said. “I did what they asked to do and I did it honorably and I’m very proud of the service.”

“When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did?” Sen. Vance asked. “He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him, a fact that he’s been criticized for aggressively by a lot of the people that he served with. I think it’s shameful.”
