Research Development Division of the Office of Research Launches Enhanced Structure and Services

The Research Development Services and Core Facilities division of the Office of Research has launched an enhanced structure and services following a one-year strategic planning process. Led by Cristina Davis , associate vice chancellor for research, the division provides services to initiate, develop and advance the research enterprise at UC Davis.

“Our staff at the Office of Research excel at assisting all stages of research development to assist the entire campus community, from team formation to cultivating research funding opportunities, proposal preparation and beyond,” said Davis. “Our goal with our updated organization and engagement strategies is to continue to enhance our UC Davis campus research enterprise in all domains.”

The division consists of the following four units.

Proposal Development Services

The Proposal Development Services team, formerly called Interdisciplinary Research Support, offers extensive services and resources to UC Davis researchers to assist in the development and submission of extramural funding proposals, including individual research grants, individual fellowships, larger center-scale and team grants, equipment grants, and institutional training grants. The unit provides early career research support , project management for large team grants, and a toolbox with templates, training opportunities, and resources to facilitate successful proposals.

Strategic Initiatives and Research Funding

The Strategic Initiatives and Research Funding (SIRF) team focuses before the pre-award stage of research development, often prior to funding opportunity announcement.  SIRF provides strategic research advancement to build capacity, mobilizing and facilitating collaboration across disciplines to help assemble competitive research teams and develop individual research programs.  The unit also identifies, promotes, and assists researchers in finding extramural funding opportunities, manages the campus-wide InfoReady Review and Pivot platforms, and administers the campus Limited Submissions program.

Research Unit Development

The Research Unit Development team elevates the visibility of the campus’s organized research unit strengths and capabilities. Currently our campus has organized research unit (ORU) and special research program (SRP) activities in many areas including: energy and environment, research and in the life and health sciences, and more.  This unit supports research through funding agency advocacy, issue management and liaison with community and campus constituents, and develops and implements strategies to promote UC Davis’ comparative advantage in securing research funding, especially from federal and state governmental and private entities.

Research Core Facilities Program

The Research Core Facilities Program is a centralized resource that supports the diverse needs of faculty, staff, students, and researcher core facilities across the UC Davis campus. Research cores and shared facilities are organized shared resources that provide access to technologies, equipment, services, and expert consultation, typically on a recharge basis, to enable, facilitate, or enhance the research mission of the university.

Proposal Building

These resources will help you think through your proposal before you start writing, assuring that all pieces fit together, can be achieved within a specified time frame, and are affordable.

If you need special assistance in developing your proposal, contact ORD at [email protected] .

Solicitation Analysis & Outlining

Your funding opportunity announcement (FOA, RFP, Call for Proposals) provides everything you need to produce a compliant proposal. In reviewing your RFP, you should look for the following information:

  • Are you eligible to apply? (PI, institution, appointment type, etc.)
  • Is there a limit to the number of applications from the institution? (Limited Submission)
  • Note the Review Criteria. These may include standard criteria, points for competitive and/or invitational preferences, etc.
  • How should the application be submitted? (e-mail, federal platform, sponsor website?)
  • Deadline. Is deadline specific to local time or time zone? Are there exceptions for holidays or emergencies?
  • Are there specific page limits and/or formatting instructions?
  • Budget caps or requirements for cost share or matching funds?
  • Who are the identified agency contacts/ Program Officers?

Use the solicitation as an organizational template for writing by preparing outlines for your proposal and the various sections and attachments. Use the language prescribed in the solicitation to create outlines. Labeling key headers will ensure your proposal provides the required level of detail, in the order requested, and integrates the review criteria into the full proposal. We suggest writing three different types of outlines for a single grant project, for organization and diligence.

  • Outline administrative tasks
  • Outline all required documentation in list form
  • Outline the body of the proposal

Grantsmanship

Writing is a craft, not a science.

Grantsmanship is matching your/your organization’s agenda to the mission, culture, and procedures of funders, and doing so in a way that maximizes quality, is innovative, and is a positive representation of the requesting organization. A good idea is the core of a grant application… but it isn’t enough.

  • To merit funding, the idea must be closely aligned with the agency’s mission, strategic plan, and investment priorities, and presented in a matter consistent with the funder's preferred or required format.
  • As funding is increasingly competitive, not only must the idea be innovative, relevant, and capable of advancing the state of knowledge, but the proposal must be compelling and well-written.
  • Grantsmanship includes maximizing the opportunity to “sell” your idea - using each allowable component of the application in a way that is respectful of reviewers, using stylistic writing, effective visual images and formatting, consistently throughout the proposal.

Grantsmanship is knowing all of these things and recognizing that they MATTER.

You can improve your grantsmanship skills by reading funded proposals and reviews of un-funded proposals, attending development programs in grant writing, speaking with colleagues who have successfully attained grant funds, developing relationships with agency program officers, and serving as a panelist for proposal reviews.

THE OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH, THE  OFFICE OF THE PROVOST, AND  STONY BROOK HEALTH SCIENCES ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE:

  • Addiction Research Seed Grant Program

Request for Applications

The Addiction Research Seed Grant Program is a one-time program developed as a funding opportunity in conjunction with the SBU Addiction Research Symposium . The funds are to be utilized to bring addiction researchers together and provide a platform for launching collaborative addiction research projects in high priority topic areas.

Funds can be used for current research that explicitly addresses modern concerns in helping individuals and communities experiencing addiction or the effects of addiction. Basic research in addiction is also encouraged. PIs are expected to have clear external funding targets and must clearly demonstrate the necessity of the proposed research.

This seed grant program will award up to five (5) projects between $25,000-$75,000 with project lengths between 12-18 months. The funds will be partially disbursed at the award start date, with the remaining funds disbursed after the awardee has submitted their first external submission.

Proposals should provide a clear timeline to the submission of a proposal to an external sponsor within 18 months.

HOW TO APPLY

The deadline is June 20, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST.

Eligibility Requirements

Review carefully to determine whether you need a letter from your Department Chair.

To serve as Principal Investigator, an individual must have a current full-time Stony Brook University faculty appointment. Titles that require no prior approval from Chair to serve as PI include: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Distinguished Professor, Clinical Professor, Research Assistant Professor, Research Associate Professor, and Research Professor.

Individuals with different titles are required to submit a letter from their Department Chair.

If needed, the letter should:

  • Define how the research will be used to advance knowledge in the field of addiction.
  • Emphasize how the proposal will contribute to advancing research at Stony Brook.

Additional eligibility information:

  • Individuals may only be PI on one application.
  • Individuals may only be a Co-PI on two applications.
  • There is a limit of four Co-PIs on any application.

Application

Proposals must be uploaded to the application portal as a single PDF file by 11:59pm on June 20, 2024 via   the Addiction Research Seed Grant Program Portal   in InfoReady. Font size must be 11 points or larger with 1 inch margins. Smaller text in figures, graphs, diagrams and charts is acceptable, as long as it is legible when the page is viewed at 100%.

  • Overview/Abstract (1-page limit)
  • Impact Statement (1-page limit) that describes how the project will advance the PI/Co-PI's career and/or addiction research program and includes a timeline for submitting a proposal to an external sponsor. It is advisable to indicate the specific sponsor/program. As you develop the timeline for external submissions, please keep in mind that award periods will vary between 12 and 18 months, and PI teams are expected to apply for external grants within the award period.
  • Project Description (2-page limit) that explains the project goals and how they align with the seed grant objectives.
  • References (No page limit) consisting of full citations including authors, year of publication, title, journal, and inclusive pages. Do not include any abstracts, summaries, or other annotations.
  • An itemized budget between $25,000 and $75,000 . Salary for PI/Co-PIs must present strong justification, and all personnel-related expenses must include fringe. Travel funds may be requested but must be necessary to perform the proposed research. Given that these are internal funds, F&A costs should not be included in the budget. The Graduate School is offering a Tuition on Research Grants (ToRG) waiver and tuition scholarship for supported Stony Brook PhD students. Please indicate TORG waiver request in your budget justification but do not budget for tuition*.
  • A timeline for spending the funds between 12 and 18 months. This timeline will determine the length of the award period for funded projects, so it is very important to map out a clear and realistic plan for spending. PIs of funded projects will be expected to be mindful of the award period and account balance throughout the life of the award. OVPR will be closely monitoring spending of the awarded projects and any PI teams that overspend will be expected to cover the difference with other funds. Likewise, PI teams that request more than the budget needed for the project in the proposed time frame should expect any remaining funds to be recaptured at the end of the award period.
  • Current and pending funding for all PIs and Co-PIs (no page limit)
  • Biosketch/CV for all PIs and Co-PIs (3-page limit per investigator)

Please note: Name of PI and Co-PIs and their respective department(s), Project Title, and Budget will be entered directly into the application portal.

*PIs should indicate this in their budget submission and also check "waiver" on the students' payroll appointment forms. This is only relevant to programs administered by the Graduate School. PhD students' graduate tuition scholarships should continue to be processed via their graduate program's GTS rosters through the Grad Finance office.

MyResearch is not required for this submission.
