EBSCO Open Dissertations

EBSCO Open Dissertations makes electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) more accessible to researchers worldwide. The free portal is designed to benefit universities and their students and make ETDs more discoverable.

Increasing Discovery & Usage of ETD Research

With EBSCO Open Dissertations, institutions are offered an innovative approach to driving additional traffic to ETDs in institutional repositories. Our goal is to help make their students’ theses and dissertations as widely visible and cited as possible.

EBSCO Open Dissertations extends the work started in 2014, when EBSCO and the H.W. Wilson Foundation created American Doctoral Dissertations which contained indexing from the H.W. Wilson print publication, Doctoral Dissertations Accepted by American Universities, 1933-1955. In 2015, the H.W. Wilson Foundation agreed to support the expansion of the scope of the American Doctoral Dissertations database to include records for dissertations and theses from 1955 to the present.

How Does EBSCO Open Dissertations Work?

Libraries can add theses and dissertations to the database, making them freely available to researchers everywhere while increasing traffic to their institutional repository.  ETD metadata is harvested via OAI and integrated into EBSCO’s platform, where pointers send traffic to the institution's IR.

EBSCO integrates this data into their current subscriber environments and makes the data available on the open web via opendissertations.org .

Repositories - An Overview

Digital repositories are widely used as a mechanism for making scholarly works freely accessible on the web. Academic libraries are often involved in the creation and management of institutional repositories that focus on preserving and disseminating the scholarship produced by their institution’s faculty and students. This can include article pre-prints and manuscripts, technical reports, conference proceedings, data sets, and software, as well as theses and dissertations. For many libraries, ETDs (Electronic Theses and Dissertations) are the first targets for an institutional repository program, and represent an opportunity to engage graduate students and their faculty advisors in broader conversation about open access, intellectual property management, long-term management of digital content, and other scholarly communication issues. Institutional repositories are especially important for universities with open access policies that direct faculty to deposit final manuscripts of scholarly articles into repository.  They are further useful in helping researchers comply with funder mandates on the accessibility of research data. Libraries are also instrumental in creating repositories for the purpose of digitizing, preserving, and showcasing cultural heritage collections.

Disciplinary repositories, such as arXiv (physics, mathematics, nonlinear sciences, computer science, quantitative biology) perform the same sorts of services as institutional repositories, but for scholars within particular disciplines or groups of disciplines. Finally, grant funding agencies, such as federal agencies, create and maintain their own repositories to preserve and disseminate the research they support. These repositories include not only scholarly articles but also the data produced and compiled in the process of the funded research.

Dissertations and Theses in KU ScholarWorks

KU ScholarWorks (KUSW) is the institutional repository of the University of Kansas. It contains scholarly work produced by KU students staff, and faculty, as well as departmental research publications.

Theses and dissertations comprise about one-third of the items in ScholarWorks.  They reflect the rich variety and proud scholarly traditions of KU research. ScholarWorks makes these works available to a worldwide audience, increasing their visibility and impact.

If you have questions about theses and dissertations in KU ScholarWorks, please contact Marianne Reed, Digital Publishing& Repository Manager at [email protected] .

Your Dissertation or Thesis in ScholarWorks

New dissertations and theses:

It generally takes 12 weeks after graduation before a new thesis or dissertation is added to the Dissertations or Theses collections in ScholarWorks. A thesis or dissertation submitted through the ETD Administrator will be sent to ScholarWorks automatically after it is processed by ProQuest, so students do not have to submit their thesis or dissertation separately to ScholarWorks.

Dissertations and theses before 2008:

If you are a KU alumnus or the heir of a KU alumnus that wrote a thesis or dissertation at KU and would like to make that work available in ScholarWorks, staff at the KU Libraries are happy to digitize your work and add it to ScholarWorks.

KU dissertations and theses that are in our collections and no longer covered by copyright can be added to KU ScholarWorks on request.   Please contact Marianne Reed, Digital Publishing & Repository Manager at [email protected] for more information.

Historical Context

Materials in KU ScholarWorks reflect the attitudes of the people, period, or context in which they were created. Certain images, words, terms, or descriptions may be offensive, culturally insensitive, or considered inappropriate today. These items do not represent the views of the KU Libraries or the university.

Unless otherwise noted, all theses and dissertations in ScholarWorks are protected by copyright and copyrights are held by the author.

  • Open Access:  KU ScholarWorks strives to provide open and public access to all content in the repository.  For exceptions, see  Delayed Access (Embargoes) , below.
  • Permanent Links :  All items in KU ScholarWorks are assigned URLs that will never change and can be used whenever the work is cited.
  • Google and Google Scholar: The developers of DSpace --the software package behind KU ScholarWorks--have worked closely with Google to ensure that the works in those systems are easily found by Google and Google Scholar.
  • ORCIDs :  KU ScholarWorks supports the use of Open Researcher and Contributor IDs (ORCIDs). An ORCID gives each researcher a unique identifier that supports connections between the author and their work.  Researcher identifiers like ORCIDs are used by many systems in the research ecosystem, including many granting agencies, where ORCIDs are used by applicants to automatically populate lists of publications.

Delayed Access (Embargoes)

KU Theses and Dissertations are deposited in KU ScholarWorks as a requirement of graduation and may be embargoed.  Authors of theses and dissertations can find information about  embargoes, including how to request or renew an embargo, on the Graduate Studies Embargo page and in the Graduate Studies Embargo Policy for Theses and Dissertations .

Withdrawal of Content

Theses and dissertations may be withdrawn from KUSW at the request of the department, Graduate Studies or the copyright holder of third-party materials included in the theses or dissertation. Materials may also be withdrawn at the direction of the Provost or General Counsel, or by legal order. Withdrawn items will be removed from all public access, but will be retained in the repository. Withdrawal requests should be directed to Marianne Reed, Digital Publishing& Repository Manager at [email protected] .

About DissOnline

The German National Library houses the largest national collection of online dissertations in Europe. We have been collecting online dissertations and theses since 1998. Since then, the collection has grown to more than 284,000 documents (as of November 2020).

Since these activities began under the aegis of DissOnline more than 20 years ago, electronic publishing has become a part of everyday university life. This is due to the close cooperation between universities, their libraries and computer centres, and representatives of academia as well as the long-standing support provided through projects funded by the German Research Foundation ( DFG ).

The DissOnline project was brought to a successful, sustainable conclusion. Stakeholders whose initiative had supported DissOnline then became free to transfer their commitment to other areas. In June 2012, the DissOnline advisory committee therefore decided to integrate the functions and information on the website www.dissonline.de into the German National Library’s services. This is particularly relevant in terms of the deposit of works with the German National Library. The extended metadata format XMetaDissPlus enables all types of publications and documents available in subject-specific and institutional repositories and on university servers to be deposited in just one fully automated transaction.

Deposit information

The DissOnline portal is also integrated into the German National Library's catalogue as a search option. This means that online dissertations are listed as a component of the German National Library’s collection alongside traditional printed dissertations, other online university publications and academic literature. Our catalogue offers a wide variety of search options that are constantly being developed and optimised further. You will find an explanation of all the available search options here:

Guide to searching dissertations and theses in the German National Library’s catalogue (only available in German)

In order to enhance the international visibility of the collection, the metadata for all German online dissertations is continually delivered to DART , the European portal for online dissertations. NDLTD : Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations is committed to the promotion of electronic publishing in the academic sector beyond Europe. The International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) takes place every year.

Statistical information

Online university publications have been collected, catalogued and archived at the German National Library since 1998. The illustration shows how the percentage of online publications has developed over the years since this work began. Here it must be considered that although dissertations are subject to a mandatory publication obligation and an obligation to be placed on deposit with the German National Library, only an approximate impression of doctoral and publication activities in Germany can be given.

As the statistics refer to the year in which the publication was released rather than the year in which it was deposited, it is quite possible that figures may rise in succeeding years. This applies in particular to the most recent full year.

Graphical representation: Proportion of online publications in relation to the total number of dissertations and habilitation by year of publication in the collection of the German National Library

The DissOnline projects

  • 1998–2000 Dissertations Online
  • 2003–2004 Establishment of a coordinating body for online university publications
  • 2005–2007 DissOnline Tutor
  • 2005–2008 Establishment of a portal for online university publications

The intensive cooperation between all partners and sponsors also made it possible to start collecting dissertations and theses on a voluntary basis in 1998, eight years before the amendment to the Law Regarding the German National Library and the provision stipulating the mandatory deposit of online publications.

Create opportunities for your future with your Honors Thesis.

All honors students end their program with an honors thesis: a sustained, independent research project in a student’s field of study. the thesis is an opportunity to work on unique research under the guidance of a faculty advisor. it often provides a writing sample for graduate school, and is also something you can share with employers to show what kind of work you can do. , what is an honors thesis.

Most of your work in college involves learning information and ideas generated by other people. When you write a thesis, you are engaging with previous work, but also adding new knowledge to your field. That means you have to know what's already been done--what counts as established knowledge; what's the current state of research; what methods and kinds of evidence are acceptable; what debates are going on. (Usually, you'll recount that knowledge in a review of the literature.) Then, you need to form a research question  that you can answer given your available skills, resources, and time  (so, not "What is love?" but "How are ideas about love different between college freshmen and seniors?"). With your advisor, you'll plan the method you will use to answer it, which might involve lab work, field work, surveys, interviews, secondary research, textual analysis, or something else--it will depend upon your question and your field. Once your research is carried out, you'll write a substantial paper (usually 20-50 pages) according to the standards of your field. Your thesis must count for at least 4 credits (some majors require that the thesis be completed over 2 semesters, and some require more than 4 credits).

What do theses look like?

The exact structure will vary by discipline, and your thesis advisor should provide you with an outline. As a rough guideline, we would expect to see something like the following:

1. Introduction 2. Review of the literature 3. Methods 4. Results 5. Analysis 6. Conclusion 7. Bibliography or works cited

In 2012, we began digitally archiving Honors theses. Students are encouraged to peruse the Honors Thesis Repository to see what past students' work has looked like. Use the link below and type your major in the search field on the left to find relevant examples. Older Honors theses are available in the Special Collections & Archives department at Dimond Library.

Will my thesis count as my capstone?

Most majors accept an Honors Thesis as fulfilling the Capstone requirement. However, there are exceptions. In some majors, the thesis counts as a major elective, and in a few, it is an elective that does not fulfill major requirements. Your major advisor and your Honors advisor can help you figure out how your thesis will count. Please note that while in many majors the thesis counts as the capstone, the converse does not necessarily apply. There are many capstone experiences that do not take the form of an Honors thesis.

Can I do a poster and presentation for my thesis?

No. While you do need to present your thesis (see below), a poster and presentation are not a thesis.

How do I choose my thesis advisor?

The best thesis advisor is an experienced researcher, familiar with disciplinary standards for research and writing, with expertise in your area of interest. You might connect with a thesis advisor during Honors coursework, but   Honors advisors can assist students who are having trouble identifying an advisor. You should approach and confirm your thesis advisor before the semester in which your research will begin.

What if I need funds for my research?

The  Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research  offers research grants, including summer support. During the academic year, students registered in credit-bearing thesis courses may apply for an  Undergraduate Research Award  for up to $600 in research expenses (no stipend).  Students who are not otherwise registered in a credit-bearing course for their thesis research may enroll in  INCO 790: Advanced Research Experience,  which offers up to $200 for research expenses.

What if I need research materials for a lengthy period?

No problem! Honors Students can access Extended Time borrowing privileges at Dimond Library, which are otherwise reserved for faculty and graduate students. Email [email protected] with note requesting "extended borrowing privileges" and we'll work with the Library to extend your privileges.

Can I get support to stay on track?

Absolutely! Thesis-writers have an opportunity to join a support group during the challenging and sometimes isolating period of writing a thesis. Learn more about thesis support  here .

When should I complete my thesis?

Register for a Senior Honors Thesis course (often numbered 799) in the spring and/or fall of your Senior year.

This “course” is an independent study, overseen by your Thesis Advisor. Your advisor sets the standards, due dates, and grades for your project. You must earn at least a B to qualify for Honors.

What happens with my completed thesis?

Present your thesis.

All students must publicly present their research prior to graduation. Many present at the  Undergraduate Research Conference  in April; other departmentally-approved public events are also acceptable.

Publish your thesis:

Honors students are asked to make their thesis papers available on  scholars.unh.edu/honors/ . This creates a resource for future students and other researchers, and also helps students professionalize their online personas.

These theses are publicly available online. If a student or their advisor prefers not to make the work available, they may upload an abstract and/or excerpts from the work instead.

Students may also publish research in  Inquiry , UNH's undergraduate research journal.

"super god mode" for windows.

This PowerShell script creates shortcuts to all special shell folders, named folders, task links, system settings, deep links, and URL protocols in Windows , providing easy access to a wide range of system settings and features.

It was inspired by the famously nicknamed "God Mode" folder and creates many more shortcuts than even that.

Screenshots

GUI Window

  • CLSID-based shell folders
  • Named special folders
  • Task links (sub-pages within shell folders and control panel menus)
  • System settings (ms-settings: links)
  • Deep links (direct links to various settings menus across Windows)
  • URL protocols
  • Hidden App Links (Internal-use and undocumented URL links used by apps)
  • Generates CSV files with detailed information about the shortcuts
  • Saves XML content retrieved from shell32.dll and other sources for reference
  • Graphical User Interface (GUI) for easy configuration

How to Run:

Option 1 (easier): using .bat launcher.

  • Download the latest version of the script. (Direct link here )
  • Download the launcher batch file to the same location. (Direct link here )
  • Run the batch file.

Option 2: Manually running

  • Open PowerShell to the directory with the script. (Tip: In File Explorer, just type "PowerShell.exe" into the address bar to open it to that path).
  • Run the following command to allow script execution for the current session: Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Scope Process
  • If no parameters are provided, a GUI will appear for easy configuration.
  • You can also run the script with optional parameters (see below).

CLI Parameters

Note: Except for -Debug and -Verbose , you must use -NoGUI for arguments to take effect.

Alternative Options Arguments

  • -DontGroupTasks : Prevent grouping task shortcuts by application name
  • -UseAlternativeCategoryNames : Use alternative category names for task links
  • -AllURLProtocols : Include third-party URL protocols from installed software

  • The script does not modify any system settings; it only creates shortcuts to existing Windows features.
  • All parameters and GUI settings are optional. The script will run with default settings if the user doesn't change anything.

Extra Tools

The "Extra Tools" folder contains additional scripts that complement the main functionality of Windows Super God Mode:

Get_DLL_String_Reference.ps1

This script allows you to easily retrieve the localized string of a single specific string reference.

  • Interactively prompts for string references
  • Resolves and displays the localized string values
  • Supports the @dllpath,-resourceID format
  • Run the script in PowerShell
  • Enter the string reference when prompted (e.g., @%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-9227 )
  • The script will display the resolved string value

Windows_XML_String_Resolver.ps1

This script processes entire XML files containing Windows string references and resolves them to their actual string values. Mostly intended to be used with the XML from shell32.dll.mun containing all the Windows task links.

  • Processes entire XML files, replacing string references with their resolved values
  • Supports custom DLL paths for resolving strings
  • Generates a new XML file with resolved strings

Get-MS-Settings-Strings.ps1

This script will find text strings of "ms-settings:" in a DLL file and output them to a text file. It is a standalone version of the feature built into the main script. Intended mainly for: "C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\SystemSettings.dll".

  • If not specified via arguments, the script will prompt the user for the DLL path, and output to the same directory as the script.

Find_URLs_From_AppxPackage_Files.ps1

This script fetches the URI protocols for each installed AppxPackage via their AppxManifest.xml file, then brute force searches for those URIs in all files in the app's install directory. It is a standalone version of the feature built into the main script.

  • No arguments necessary: .\Find_URLs_From_AppxPackage_Files.ps1
  • PowerShell 99.5%
  • Batchfile 0.5%
