Dhnn-101 advanced behavioral science of disease.

This course focuses on the correction of disease through a process referred to as “Orthopathy.” “Ortho” means “upright, correct.” “Pathology” means the “study of disease” or “the study of suffering.” “Disease is right action or right suffering,” says Dr. Jennings, the greatest pathologist of the 19th century. This course covers definitions, etiologies, and very effective, Natural and Hygienic healing formulas for disease as presented by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton. (4.0 credits)

DHNN-102 Maximum, Body Energy & Energy Healing Concepts

DHNN-103 Fasting: The Spiritual Art of Restoring & Preserving Health

This course demystifies the practice of fasting when ill and presents the amazing usefulness of the practice in restoring health. During a fast, the body rests and then uses recuperated energy to repair itself. Fasting is thus the quickest, safest, and most natural practice known to reverse and completely eliminate acute disease. Fasting is also highly effective in arresting, if not reversing virtually all chronic diseases, provided that cellular integrity and organic structure have not been irreversibly compromised. When cellular integrity and organic structures have been compromised, complete reversal and recovery may not be possible; but arrest of the disease process and higher levels of health can in most cases be achieved. (4.0 credits)

DHNN-104 Psychoneuroimmunology: Introduction

This course provides an excellent overview of the science of Psychoneuroimmunology and its philosophies, which laid the groundwork for modern-day “mind/body” healing techniques in the medical and healing arts worlds. The student’s attention is drawn to many experiments, proving the authenticity of the concepts unique to Psychoneuroimmunology. (4.0 credits)

DHNN-105 Advanced Natural Health I

This course presents the greatest Hygienic laws and natural health concepts laid down in the 20th century by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton. The student will learn, in depth, the true art and concepts of the restoration and preservation of natural health by natural, unadulterated means. (4.0 credits)

DHNN-106 Advanced Natural Health II

This course is a continuation of Advanced Natural Health I and further presents the greatest Hygienic laws and natural health concepts laid down in the 20th century by Dr. Herbert M. Shelton. The student will learn, in even further depth, the true concepts of the restoration and preservation of natural health by natural, unadulterated means. (4.0 credits)

DHNN-107 Natural Health Counseling Practice: The Legal Requirements & Responsibilities of a Natural Health Practitioner: Part I & II

This course teaches the legal in’s & out’s and do’s & don’ts of a Natural Health & Hygienic Counseling Practice. The course also presents very advanced and highly effective counseling techniques that will enable the Natural Health & Hygienic Practitioner to show clients and students how to restructure their thinking processes to overcome self-sabotage and to achieve amazing successes in their healthful living habits! (Part I: 4.0 credits) (Part II: 4.0 credits)

DHNN-108 Essay: Herbology

This course exposes the most poisonous components of herbs in common use today and their effects once ingested by the human body. The student will select a thesis statement relative to the topic and prepare a 2,500-word, typed, double-spaced essay developing the thesis. (4.0 credits)

DHNN-109 Advanced Neurobiology of Beliefs

This course will teach you that we must maintain a condition of physical, mental and spiritual cleanliness. How? By  “ allowing us to purify ourselves from everything that pollutes either spirit, mind, body and soul ” . Why?  Because your brain is the hardware of your soul and the very essence of a human being. It will teach you the scientific evidence that your anxiety, depression, anger, obsessive and compulsive behaviors are all related to the Neuro Biological workings of your brain and if it is polluted and in a toxic condition then the brain will not function properly. This course will teach you how to  “Remove The Cause”  of your toxic condition, Physically, Mentally, and Spiritually. (4 credits)

DHNN-110 Doctorate’s Thesis or Sports Nutrition & Physiology

(student’s choice).

Doctorate’s Thesis

The student will select a thesis statement and develop it into a 3,000-word, typed, double-spaced Doctorate’s Thesis on a specific aspect of natural health, as applied in his or her own life and/or in the lives of others. The student may draw upon any or all of the material from the Doctorate Program in the elaboration of the Doctorate Thesis. (4.0 credits)

Sports Nutrition & Physiology

This course presents a modern and thoroughly up-to-date 21st century study on the physiology of the human organism with a specific focus on the sports physiology of the digestive tract as it relates to sports nutrition for optimum power, strength and endurance. “You are not what you eat but what you assimilate that determines power, strength and endurance.” (4.0 credits)

DHNN-111-E The Mind of the Spirit (Optional)

The course will teach you that “minding the spirit” (“one’s way of thinking” or “mind-set”) as a spiritual person will empower you with a Divine active force. This course will teach you that if you “sow with a view towards corruption of your spirit, mind, body and soul, you will reap corruption, but if you sow with a spiritual, wholesome view towards living, ‘mind, body, spirit and soul,’ you have chosen to continuously perfect your life in order that you may continue to live the Mind Of The Spirit” (4.0 credits)

Online Degrees In Alternative Medicine

  • Online Massage Therapy Degree Program
  • Online Medical Laboratory Technician & Medical Technology Degrees

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a term used to encompass a diverse group of health care practices and procedures that are not embraced by mainstream Western medical thought. Many of these practices aim to provide “natural” remedies and preventative efforts for health related issues. An alternative medicine degree can be used to prepare for a stand-alone career or as a complement to a more conventional health care degree. Complementary and Alternative Medicine techniques cover a wide range of therapies including aroma therapy, chiropractic therapies, massage therapy, acupuncture, herbal therapies, and much more.

Alternative medicine practitioners blend their love for healthy living with a strong desire to help others. They believe in the power of natural healing techniques and use them in conjunction or in place of conventional Western medical practices. Students with an interest in medicine, herbal treatments, and natural remedies are a great fit for alternative medicine degree programs.

How To Choose The Right Alternative Medicine Degree

The Complementary and Alternative Medicine industry encompasses a wide variety of professions, all with different degree and certification requirements. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, most positions within the field require some type of postsecondary training. Designations for individual careers are typically awarded by certification boards, and may be required by certain localities in order to practice. As with most health care professions, licensing and certification in the field of alternative medicine is usually monitored and handled by each state. In order to obtain certifications, a proper license, and designations, practitioners must meet certain educational requirements. Successful completion of board examinations may also be required.

As with conventional medicine, degree requirements vary widely on the type of career being sought. Thus, degrees in alternative medicine can range from the associate level to doctoral programs. Prior to enrolling in a degree program, students should consider their ultimate career goals and whether they plan to practice alternative medicine in a complementary or stand-alone capacity.

The chart below lists a few of the alternative medicine degree programs that are available to students, along with some potential career options for each:

Associate in Alternative MedicineAssociate degrees typically take up to two years of full-time study to complete.Massage Therapist, Community Health Worker
Bachelor’s in Alternative MedicineThese programs typically take four years of full-time study to complete.Dietician or Nutritionist, Health Educator, Nurse
Master’s in Alternative Medicine (Various Areas of Study)A master’s degree can take up to two years of full-time study after completion of a bachelor’s degree.Nurse Midwife, Dietician or Nutritionist
Doctor of Chiropractic DegreeThese programs take about four years of study after earning a bachelor’s degree.Chiropractor
Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine DegreeThese programs take about four years of study after earning a bachelor’s degree. Some prerequisites in biology and chemistry are often required.Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine

Since the term “alternative medicine” pertains to such a wide variety of careers, students should carefully consider what they want to do with their alternative medicine degree upon graduation. Some careers in the field might require specific degrees not listed above. Other students may wish to pursue an online degree in alternative medicine as a way to broaden their knowledge and provide the best treatment possible for their patients.

Before choosing which type of alternative medicine degree to pursue, students must determine whether their desired program meets any licensing requirements in their intended state of practice. They should also be sure that the individual program satisfies the educational requirements needed to sit for any board or certification exams they intend to take.

What To Expect In An Alternative Medicine Program

Alternative medicine professionals occupy a wide variety of different roles within the health care industry. Because of this, core courses in these programs will vary significant by degree and specialization. That being said, here are some examples of courses typically found in alternative medicine degree programs:

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Introduction to Aromatherapy
  • Fundamentals of Nutrition
  • Intro to Clinical Decision Making
  • General Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Advanced Biology
  • Intro to Naturopathy
  • Principles of Acupuncture
  • Intro to Chiropractic
  • Basics of Herbology and Botany
  • Antioxidants
  • Intro to Traditional Chinese Medicines
  • Introduction to Homeopathy

As with many conventional health care training schools, alternative medicine degree programs often require students to complete a “hands-on” component. During this internship or practicum, students gain valuable real-world experience that they can apply to their future careers. Students interested in pursuing online degrees in alternative medicine should inquire about any such requirements before enrolling.

Alternative Medicine Degree Specializations

Degrees in alternative medicine encompass a wide range of disciplines and specialties. They can be used to create health care practices based entirely around alternative techniques, or as a complement to conventional Western medicine.

Some popular alternative medicine specialties include:

  • Holistic Health Education
  • Naturopathic Medicine
  • Herbal Therapy
  • Aromatherapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Oriental Medicine
  • Nutritional and Diet Therapy
  • Wellness Coaching or Consulting
  • Chiropractic Therapy

A student’s chosen specialization often determines which degree is ideal for their goals. For instance, a student who wants to become holistic health educator may need only an undergraduate degree to gain entry-level employment. However, a student who wants to practice as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine must complete both undergraduate and doctoral-level degree programs.

Benefits of An Online Degree In Alternative Medicine

Similar to conventional medical training, students enrolled in alternative medicine degree programs study a wide range of human health and wellness topics, including human anatomy, chemistry, biology, nutrition, and more. Students generally gain most of their knowledge through lectures, texts, and discussion. That makes online degrees in alternative medicine a good fit for students who need additional flexibility that traditional campuses cannot provide.

By leveraging the use of current technologies, students can obtain the foundational knowledge required for most alternative medicine careers — all from the comfort of their own home. Course materials and lectures are available at any time of day, allowing students to create a study schedule that fits into their already busy lives. Students generally connect with their professors and classmates using message boards, email, and video chat.

While most of their studies can be completed from home, students who pursue an alternative medicine degree online are often still required to complete a practicum or internship. These hands-on situations equip students with practical experience to help prepare them for the reality of working in the field.

Careers in Alternative Medicine

An alternative medicine degree can be a great fit for those who have an interest in helping others through the use of natural treatments and prevention. Although the alternative medicine field covers a broad range of different careers, some of these professions are actually quite familiar to the public. Mind Body Medicine Program

close-up of hands during meditation

As a result of a grant from the National Institute of Health National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), Georgetown University School of Medicine has integrated a course in Mind-Body Medicine into its medical school curriculum. In addition, an annual professional training program in Mind-Body Medicine is offered to the faculty of Georgetown University School of Medicine and Georgetown University Law Center.

Mind-body approaches — including self-awareness, relaxation, meditation, guided imagery, biofeedback, physical exercise, art, music and movement — are among the best known and most widely used of the complementary, alternative or integrative approaches to healthcare.

Mind-body approaches are particularly important in another way. By their very nature they put high value on, and teach the power of self-awareness and self-care. In so doing, they help shape the new integrative model of health care — one in which treatment is balanced with teaching; in which prevention and self-care are given as much respect as procedures and pharmacological interventions.

In order for students to understand the potential of mind-body approaches, as well as apply them in clinical practice, we believe that they should experience these approaches themselves. It is not enough to hear about mind-body medicine and to read and comprehend the scientific basis for its efficacy. Rather, for students to appreciate their patients’ capacities for self-awareness and self-care, students should experience and realize their own abilities.

To that end, the Mind-Body Medicine Program, supported by the administration and faculty, takes medical, and graduate students through a series of exercises used to promote overall well-being, stress management, empathy, self-awareness and self-care.

MIND-BODY MEDICINE DEGREE PROGRAMS

Integrative mental health, cognitive behavioral therapy, and holistic wellness are arguably more important than ever. This is driving a demand for quality treatment centers, practitioners, and holistic wellness solutions. In response, Saybrook offers credentialed and flexible mind-body medicine programs—a holistic approach to support mental and physical wellness.

  • Mind-Body Medicine Degree Programs

Mind Body Medicine

Join our Mind-Body Medicine program where we offer a Master’s, Ph.D., and Credentials that can further your knowledge in this field. Our Mind-Body Medicine degree online , in-person, or hybrid offers a wide range of flexibility to our students.

What is Mind-Body Medicine?

As one of the leading complementary approaches to health care, mind-body medicine offers holistic, evidence-based therapies to support physical, emotional, social, and mental health through stress management and thought regulation. Instead of focusing solely on physical symptoms, holistic therapies address the root causes of illnesses, which might include emotional stressors, cognitive patterns, and social influences. By targeting health from this perspective, these evidence-based therapies aim to provide sustainable wellness solutions, going beyond just symptom relief.

Applications of Mind-Body Medicine

Applications of mind-body medicine include tai-chi, yoga, cognitive behavioral therapy, and relaxation techniques such as hypnosis and meditation, which attempt to center the mind into a state of flow and relaxation. This focuses on treating the whole person rather than treating just the present symptoms, which is a key value of our Mind-Body Medicine degree programs.

By practicing mind-body methods, such as mindfulness and stress reduction, p atients have found relief from symptoms of common ailments such as anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and even cancer treatments.

Saybrook’s Mind-Body Medicine Programs

We offer graduate-level mind-body medicine degree programs, certificates, and specializations that allow students the flexibility to study multiple mind-body medicine techniques. These include integrative health and wellness coaching, integrative and functional nutrition, biofeedback, clinical hypnosis training, mindfulness applications, or contemplative end-of-life care.

For graduate students, we offer the following master’s mind-body medicine degree program. Completing the master’s in mind-body medicine degree program qualifies you for one of our Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine programs.

  • M.S. in Mind-Body Medicine

For doctoral students, we offer the following Ph.D. Mind-Body Medicine programs where you can delve deeper into specialized research and methodologies that will prepare you to lead in the field of mind-body medicine.  Our Ph.D. Mind-Body Medicine specialization programs allow you to focus your studies on a specific aspect of this field to better prepare you for your aspiring career.

  • Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine
  • Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine, Specialization in Applied Psychophysiology
  • Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine, Specialization in Contemplative End-of-Life Care
  • Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine, Specialization in Integrative and Functional Nutrition
  • Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine, Specialization in Integrative Mental Health
  • Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine, Specialization in Integrative Wellness Coaching
  • Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine, Specialization in Mindful Leadership in Healthcare

For those interested in expanding their skill sets in mind-body medicine, we offer the following certificate programs to advance your portfolio and professional skillset through comprehensive training in specific mind-body medicine techniques.

  • Certificate in Contemplative End-of-Life Care
  • Certificate in Mind-Body Medicine
  • Certificate in Mindfulness Applications

Our mind-body medicine programs provide the training needed to improve a patient’s well-being through relaxation and stress management techniques from around the world.

What Can You Do With a Mind-Body Medicine Degree?

We have alumni working in a variety of mind-body careers and settings , providing their patient’s treatment and guiding them to a higher standard of living and mindfulness. They include:

  • Private practice
  • Integrative medicine and wellness centers
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Family medicine
  • Medical centers, hospitals, community health, primary care
  • Medical spas and yoga retreat centers
  • Corporate wellness centers
  • Public health
  • College and university campuses

The human mind is a powerful tool for the wellness of the body, and by applying the principles and evidence that support mind-body medicine, students and graduates can impact their communities in observable and useful ways.

For instance, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is commonly used by those who receive their Ph.D. in mind body medicine to improve a person’s quality of life. CBT is a talk therapy structured to help a patient identify and cope with emotional challenges and poor mental health. It can be used to overcome trauma, resolve relationship differences, and treat mental illness when traditional medicine is ineffective or unavailable.

Another example of a potential career for those with a mind-body medicine degree is in holistic health care, which is a broad approach to boosting the quality of one’s physical, mental, spiritual, and social life. Holistic health care careers offer practitioners flexibility in helping their patients develop coping skills to improve their lives.

What Sets Saybrook Mind-Body Medicine Programs Apart?

With a mind-body medicine degree from Saybrook, students will be prepared and confident in their abilities to ease the stress of their patients. Saybrook’s curriculum and its faculty are leading the fields of integrative health, mind-body science and research, and integrative medicine to help our graduates make an impact in their respective healthcare fields.

Saybrook University’s Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine is designed for passionate learners who wish to dive deep into the intricacies of the mind-body connection. For those who value flexibility, our mind-body medicine degree online offering ensures you can study, complete coursework, and attend classes either remotely or through our hybrid program. Given the high costs and varying (and sometimes uncertain ) ROI of traditional four-year degrees, many people are looking at alternative education and career paths that offer promising returns without necessarily paying the hefty price tag. If you're unsure about whether college is right for you, here are some options to consider in the meantime:

Vocational Training and Certifications

Vocational training programs and industry certifications can provide specialized skills that are highly valued in the job market. These programs are typically shorter and less expensive than traditional degrees. For example, the BLS reports that the median annual wage for electricians, who typically undergo vocational training, was $61,590 in 2023. This is comparable to the earnings of many bachelor's degree holders.

Online Education

Online education has experienced substantial growth since the COVID-19 pandemic. Many reputable universities now offer online degree programs that are more affordable and flexible than traditional on-campus options.

From 2020 to 2024, the market for online education has seen significant increases. According to data, the number of students enrolled exclusively online grew by 93% from 2019 to 2020 , reaching nearly 5.8 million students.

This trend has continued, with online universities reporting an 11% increase in digital enrollment , even as traditional university enrollment has declined by 3% on average. This surge underscores the growing acceptance of online education as a viable alternative to traditional degrees.

Russian Troops Captured One Of Ukraine’s Dutch Armored Vehicles, Rode It Back Into Battle—And Promptly Got Killed

Wear solar eclipse glasses to look at aurora-causing sunspots this weekend, experts say: here’s what to know, apple iphone 16 release date: new report hones in on precise date.

In addition, the U.S. eLearning market is projected to grow by $21.64 billion by the end of 2024 , indicating a robust and expanding sector. At MIU , for example, we've seen substantial growth since 2020 in our domestic online programs, which has grown 210% since the pandemic. This ongoing trend highlights the major shift towards online learning, driven by the demand for flexibility and accessibility in education.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction, allowing individuals to earn while they learn. Apprenticeships are available in various fields, including technology, healthcare, and the trades (i.e., plumbing, carpentry, electric). According to the U.S. Department of Labor, apprentices earn an average starting wage of $15 per hour, and those who complete their programs can expect to make significantly higher wages.

Gen Z's Shift Towards Blue-Collar Careers

Gen Z is actively moving toward blue-collar careers because of the rising cost of education and increased burden of student debt. This shift is driven by several factors:

  • The stability and earning potential of many skilled trades.
  • The inability of AI to replace hands-on, skilled labor.
  • The desire to avoid substantial student debt.

The return on investment of higher education is a complex and multifaceted issue. While a college degree often leads to higher earnings individually and lower unemployment rates economically, the financial benefits can vary widely, based on factors like your field of study, institution type, and geographic location. Additionally, the rising cost of tuition and the burden of student debt can't be overlooked.

For those considering higher education, it's important to do thorough research and carefully evaluate the potential financial outcomes. Exploring alternative education paths, like vocational training, online degrees, and apprenticeships, can also provide viable options for achieving financial success without the seemingly massive expense of a traditional four-year degree.
