IELTS Community Service Essay

This is an IELTS Community Service Essay, also known as Unpaid Work.

This is when voluntary work is done by a person or group of people that benefits other people, usually in the local community. 

Take a look at the question:

It has been suggested that all young adults should be required to undertake a period of unpaid work helping people in the community.

Would the drawbacks of such a requirement be greater than the benefits to the community and the individual young adults?

In this community service essay, you can't just list the advantages and disadvantages.

You have to give your opinion because it it asks whether there are more benefits or drawbacks .  

Also note it is specifically about young adults so you have to answer the question in terms of this group . 

The question is suggesting there are both good and bad sides so it is better to discuss both. 

This IELTS community service essay has been organised by dedicating one body paragraph to the disadvantages and one to the advantages, but clearly stating in the introduction and conclusion which side the writer supports.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Model Answer

As responsible citizens of a progressive society, there is often an expectation bound to all the young adults that they should get involved in unpaid work to assist people in their community. Although there are drawbacks to such activities, I would argue that these are outweighed by the benefits. 

The drawbacks associated with this primarily include the time that a young adult would put in helping people. This time could very well be used in enhancing current skills, developing new skills, strengthening educational qualifications and then applying for competitive and high status jobs. Also, youth is that stage of life that allows enjoyment without being tied down with the responsibilities that arise with age. Spending the little leisure time that they get in helping the community would steal from them the pleasures of exploring their individuality. 

On the other hand, providing unpaid help to people in the community also comes with significant advantages. The young adults of today become the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. If today they learn the value of moving forward while helping others move forward, they will understand what true progress and success means and that money is not everything. They will learn to empathise with each other, be sensitive to each other’s needs and make choices that benefit one and all. This in turn will also help communities prosper. With people being able to reach out to each other in cases of need, neighbourhoods and cities could hopefully become become better places to live in, which is precisely what is needed in society today. 

To sum up, overall I believe that the benefits are greater than the drawbacks. The requirement to undertake community service must be a key part of the life cycle of young adults and encouraged wherever possible.

Task Response

The IELTS Community Service Essay would get a good score as it clearly answers the question .

It discusses both sides of the issue and clearly states that the writer thinks that there are greater benefits than drawbacks.

This could be just stated in the conclusion if you like, but there is nothing wrong with placing it in both the introduction and conclusion. 

Putting it at the beginning makes it very clear upfront what the opinion is so there is no confusion:

Although there are drawbacks to such activities, I would argue that these are outweighed by the benefits.  

Coherence and Cohesion

The IELTS community service essay is well-organised and the arguments are easy to follow and read. 

Placing the advantages in one paragraph and disadvantages in the other makes sure each has a clear central idea .

Lexical Resource

There are good examples of vocabulary and phrases related to the topic. For example:

  • responsible citizens
  • progressive society
  • associated with this
  • enhancing current skills
  • exploring their individuality
  • innovators of tomorrow
  • communities prosper

Grammatical Range and Accuracy 

The grammar is accurate and there is an interesting and varied range of sentences that show complexity. For example:

IELTS essay, topic: should unpaid community work be mandatory in high school (agree/disagree)?

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programs (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that voluntary services charity, cleaning the neighborhood, imparting knowledge to the underprivileged, should be made mandatory in the high school curriculum. I strongly agree as it not only helps in students becoming socially responsible adults but also in shaping their character.

Firstly, community service inculcates a sense of responsibility towards the society, something that is needed to shape a good society. For instance, the introduction of Swatch Bharath scheme in my school, The Hyderabad Public School, ten years ago taught me not only to keep the surroundings of the school clean but also to never litter wherever I go. Hence, now I feel responsible to maintain cleanliness everywhere. Such services are needed to develop a better society in the future.

Secondly, voluntary services cater to the overall character development of an individual. It a feeling of empathy in children which is needed to build a better character. For example, an alumnus of Montessori High School, who indulged in petty law-breaking activities during school confessed that it was the charity service that he did in high school; which in his mind; him in becoming a better person for his family and refrained him from committing socially irresponsible acts. Thus, such voluntary activities teach us to value what we have and in turn to our personality development.

That being said, we cannot deny the fact that many students misuse the time allocated for these services by considering it as an excursion to enjoy with friends rather than a learning .

In conclusion, although compulsory voluntary community service has its drawbacks, it is still useful in shaping a child as a socially responsible citizen and also in their overall personality development. Therefore, pupils should be encouraged to involve themselves in such activities.

This is a well written essay. It addresses all parts of the task and the arguments and ideas are developed and supported. The information is presented in a logical order and the ideas are linked by appropriate connective words. The use of vocabulary conveys the exact meaning of the writer and there are only minor instances of a word being used somewhat unnaturally. Sentence formation demonstrates a high level of control and very few errors (mouse over the words underlined in blue shows suggested corrections). Overall this essay seems good enough for IELTS Band 8 level.

Do it is compulsory to right bothe agree and disagree when this type of question come?? Like if i agree i would right agree paragraph long and only little things about disagree in other para which will be short right??? Pls help me..

For the essay to be more balanced it is a good idea to write about both sides of the argument. Naturally, the side you agree with will result in a larger paragraph, and that is fine. Just make sure your ‘disagree’ paragraph isn’t too short.

I might think writer provided his school info isn’t Mandatory in some cases it would be a reason of getting low score or push back at 8 band to 6 band

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighborhood or teaching sports to younger children).

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is argued that volunteering should be made part of the school curriculum. This essay agrees with that suggestion completely because of the benefits it brings to pupils. The essay will first look at how voluntary work can help students develop soft skills and then discuss how these extracurricular activities are valued by universities and employers.

Education should not be limited to strictly academic pursuits and those in education should also develop life skills, such as teamwork, empathy and self-discipline, and one of the best ways to hone these aptitudes is through community service. Serving those less fortunate than ourselves teaches us many lessons including how to work with people from other backgrounds and the value of hard work. For example, I personally volunteered to spend 6 weeks in Africa teaching disadvantaged children and this led to a much higher work ethic when I returned to my studies.

Many colleges and companies are also increasingly looking for this type of experience. Most school leavers have the same grades and charitable works can help set you apart from the herd. For example, Cambridge and Oxford receive thousands of applications from straight-A students every year and can only accept a small percentage of applicants. What you have done outside the classroom is often the thing that differentiates you from everyone else and gets you that coveted spot.

In conclusion, teenagers should be made to partake in unpaid work as part of their schooling because it will help them learn things they wouldn’t ordinarily learn from their teachers and it will also boost their chances of getting into third level education.

It has been suggested that hight school students should be involved in unpaid community services as a compulsory part of hight school programmes. Most of the colleges are already providing opportunities to gain work experience, however, these are not compulsory. In my opinion, sending students to work in community services is a good idea as it can provide them with many lots of valuable skills.

Life skills are very important and by doing voluntary work, students can learn how to communicate with others and work in a team but also how to manage their time and improve their organisation skills. Nowadays, unfortunately, teenagers do not have many after-schools activities. After schools clubs are no longer that popular and students mostly go home and sit in front of the TV, browsing the Internet or playing video games.

By giving them compulsory work activities with charitable or community organisations, they will be encouraged to do something more creative. Skills gained through compulsory work will not only be an asset on their CV but also increase their employability. Students will also gain more respect towards work and money as they will realise that it is not that easy to earn them and hopefully will learn to spend them in a more practical way.

In conclusion, I think this is a very good idea, and I hope this programme will be put into action for high schools/colleges shortly.

Model Answer :

Over the last half-century, the pace of change in the life of human beings has increased beyond our wildest expectations. This rapid change has created a wide sector of people who are in need for help to adapt to this modern society. Consequently, numerous organizations all over the world have started free community service programs. Although there are some commentators who believe that youth participation in these services should be always a personal option, I am strongly inclined towards the opinion that it should be an obligatory part of high school curriculum.

Firstly, youngsters who participate in the charity work teaching English to newcomers helping young children to learn sports, gain great experience, knowledge and moral values that will significantly influence their future studies in college or their careers. For example, a recent study conducted in London has shown that high school pupils who worked in unpaid community service achieved higher scores in their college exams. Furthermore, a lot of individuals in the society will have better access to the services offered by the community through those ambitious and active students. Lastly, the government could save money that can be allocated to other nationwide services such as the construction of roads, hospitals, and other projects. Undoubtedly great benefits will come from involving free community services in high school programs.

On the other hand, a strong argument can be made on the opposite side. To begin with, opponents think that these free activities might delay secondary school students from joining the college. In addition, many high school students need to work to save money for their university study, for instance, a recent statistics have revealed that more than 25% of high school student worked casual jobs to save money for their high school student worked casual jobs to save money for the future of studies. Moreover, high school curriculum is already overwhelmed by various subjects, thus it free services becomes a compulsory pack, this will burden the students.

To sum up, it can be clearly seen that the pros of adding society service in high school program outweigh the cons. I do recommend that the ministry of education encourage high school implements these steps make our community better.

Some people think that social services which are not remunerated, such as being involved in activities of a charity, developing the neighbourhood, or teaching children how to play sports, should be mandatory in high school syllabi. However, I strongly disagree with this statement because students cannot afford to spend their scarce time in cocurricular activities, which could turn them to unfair means in exams.

Normally at high school, students are engaged in studying so many subjects that their time cannot be used to carry out social services. In fact, if they want to achieve good grades in academy, which can be very useful to enrol in prestigious universities afterwards, they need to spend many hours attending diverse lectures, consulting with teacher regarding complex issues, reading out the related texts to decipher the deep ideas, doing the regular group and individual project work. Furthermore, students have to get involved in outdoor physical activities with their peers in order to maintain a good physical condition and develop an appropriate team attitude. As they go through all these issues simultaneously, it is too difficult for them to take part in obligatory social work.

In addition, it is well known that each student has a unique approach to community engagement. Specially during teen age and early youth, when a student’s personality is forming, his or her quest for freedom does not permit them to get involved in social service by force. Furthermore, if social services were included as obligatory in high school activities, they would become more attached to people and work rather than their study, which could lead them towards finishing the school with less subject knowledge and poor grades. As the students know that a smart academic record is important for their further study or job security, they might resort to different unfair means in exams to avail their desired score.

In conclusion, if welfare activities were enforced in high school programmes, the students’ academic performance would be damaged, because it would consume a major share of their study time, which results in the lack of exam preparation. Thus, these knock-on effects connect and could convert into the possibility of students’ use of unfair means in the exams.

Ielts writing task 1: 'table' essay.

The table below gives information about the underground railway systems in six cities.

Full essay (band 9):

The table shows data about the underground rail networks in six major cities.

The table compares the six networks in terms of their age, size and the number of people who use them each year. It is clear that the three oldest underground systems are larger and serve significantly more passengers than the newer systems.

The London underground is the oldest system, having opened in 1863. It is also the largest system, with 394 kilometres of route. The second largest system, in Paris, is only about half the size of the London underground, with 199 kilometres of route. However, it serves more people per year. While only third in terms of size, the Tokyo system is easily the most used, with 1927 million passengers per year.

Of the three newer networks, the Washington DC underground is the most extensive, with 126 kilometres of route, compared to only 11 kilometres and 28 kilometres for the Kyoto and Los Angeles systems. The Los Angeles network is the newest, having opened in 2001, while the Kyoto network is the smallest and serves only 45 million passengers per year.

I tried this last time and found it quite helpful to group the cities into capital and non-capital. The networks in the non-capital cities are not only newer but much smaller and less frequented by passengers than those in the capitals.

l have not understand the use of with in the sentence shown above .as far as l see you often use 'with' in your sentence.ideas for ielts consist of many sentence with 'with'.

for example

people with disabilities==l have not undestood therefore l decide to use disabled people (in the meantime thanks for your labour. a very inspritional book)

To be honest I'm not sure. Examiners don't do any calculations - they just give 8 scores (4 scores for each essay - task, organisation, vocabulary, grammar). The scores are sent to the IELTS office (e.g. in Cambridge) where someone does the calculation.

"having opened" and "having been opened" are both correct. You can say "the shop opened" or "the shop was opened".

Yes, it's quite a normal thing for native speakers to use "with" in this way. 'People with disabilities' just means 'people who have disabilities'. It's the same when we say 'people with children'.

Yes, you could say that.

I try to write task 1, test 2, Cambridge practice tests 6. It has the same kind of table. I find it a bit diffucult for this table.

I'm afraid that I do it in a wrong way. I know that you dont give detail comments on writing here.Could you please give a general comment on it? I just want to know if I follow the proper way. Dear friends here, Could you please give me your advice too?

The table illustrates the firgure of average distance that a person travelled in one year by several modes in 1985 and 2000.

It can be seen clearly that people travelled more in 200 and car was the most popular means for a trip either in 1985 or 2000.

In 1985, a traveller drove averagely 3,199 miles for a trip per year, the longest mileage in comparision with other modes. This number rose up to 4,806 miles person in 2000 and it kept the first position in choices of means for travel. In 2000, every person was on a long distance bus for 124 miles, more than twofold the firgure in 1985. There were 429 miles recorded for local bus use per person in 1985, dropping to 274 mils in 2000. Taxi was the less prefered transportation means for travel over the period. A person took cab for 13 miles in 1985 and 42 ,iles in 2000. Travelling on food was kept relatively unchanged.

I have seen many of my students try to make a ratio between Kilometres of route and number of passengers. This has always been inaccurate or unclear.

Yes, trying to find a connection between kilometres and passengers just causes problems - there is no clear relationship.

I've looked at various sites and i find your method in writing a summary the most effective! Before this I've been having trouble combining whats the "highest and lowest", and stating numbers all in one cluttered sentence. Your structure allows me to separate it and meet the word count.

I have one question. Is it necessary to indicate the word count at the bottom of the summary ??

The table illustrates the figures on subway systems in six major cities: London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto, and Los Angeles.

It can be clearly seen that the first and longest underground railway system was recorded by Londoners whereas the largest number of passengers occurred in Tokyo.

As regards the figures on the table, it was first in London that underground was constructed in 1863 while France used subway system in 1990. Then the construction of underground railway system spreaded through Tokyo(1927), Washington DC(1976) Kyoto(1981) and Los Angeles(2001)

The longest subways belonged to Londoners they made 394 kilometer long route, and Paris followed to be the second with 199 kilometers in long whereas the shortest subways were recorded by Kyoto(11 kilometers)

However, although London was first to build underground railway system people were counted to have the biggest amount in Tokyo(1927 million passengers per year) comparing with mentioned cities. The figures for France recorded 1191 million of passengers after Tokyo whereas the smallest amount was stated in Kyoto(45 million passenger in a year) which meant 5 million less passenger than Los Angeles

Is it ok( but spent 24 minutes, yet need to practice to manage it in preferable amount of time)

It's me again Simon . I have 2 questions :

Not only is London railway system opened earliest, it also has the longest length of route, with 394 kilometres. Its number of passengers per year is outweighed by Tokyo’s subway which size was nearly 3 times larger than London’s, at 1927 million.

My question is 1. could I use the "London's " like that in Ielts writing

If I can, so this sentence is good as well right ? : the annual passengers using Paris’ s subways is nearly double London’s .

I am a bit confused with the tenses used during writing academic 1 task. Some of the essay is totally in past tense and some of it is a mixture of past and present tense. How can i differentiate that during my writing. What i understand is that we write as past tense when describing past year and present tense for describing future or present. However in this example you used present tense although the event is already passed. I would be appreciate if you could advice me on this matter as my exam is next week. Thank you.

In this essay I mainly used the present tense because I assumed that the underground systems still exist, so I can say that "the London system IS the oldest".

I also use the present tense to say what the table "shows" (because we can see the table now).

Apart from the above cases, use the past tense to describe past years, and use the future (will, is predicted to) to describe future years. Use the present if no times are shown.

In the table above, the only event that has already passed is the opening of each network. You can therefore write "The London underground opened in..."

In the essay, i notice that your main part of the article puts focus on the most obvious signatures, such as longest, oldest, most passengers.

Then, you extend from those information to introduce the ones not having any signature that's obvious.

I think that's important skill i need to learn. Thank you for such a great example.

The table shows some data regarding the underground railway services in six different cities in the world. It displays some key features in terms of date opened, length of route and annual number of passengers.

London underground system is the the oldest and the longest of all. It was established in 1863 and have total route length of 394 kilometers. It is nearly forty years older and twice longer than the one in Pairs which was built in 1900 and have a length of nearly 200 kilometers, that takes the second place. Tokyo's system takes the third with established date of 1927 and route length of 155 kilometers. Kyoto and Los Angeles have the newest and shortest networks with established date of 1981 and 2001, and network length of 11 and 28 Kilometers respectively.

With regards to annual number of customers, Tokyo has the largest number of passengers,with nearly 2 billion passengers using the system every year. Paris is the second busiest system with nearly 1.2 billion customers per year. Despite their half route length, both cities serve far more people than the London underground, which has only 775 million passengers a year. Washington DC underground railway system serves around 126 million per year. However, Kyoto's and Los Angeles's systems have the least number of travelers, serving only 45 and 50 million people per year respectively.

The table provides data about the underground railway system in six major cities in terms of opening date, total length of rail road and annual ridership. Overall, each of the mentioned features of the six subway systems vary considerably.

According to the table, the oldest system in London has the longest railroad. Incorporated in 1863 it measures a length of 394 kilometers. While regarding to the amount of passengers per year, Tokyo reaches the highest number with 1927 million annual ridership.

Comparing those facts Kyoto, as one of the recent subway stations, opened in 1981 has the minority of both length and ridership, reflected in 11 kilometers of subway road used by 45 passengers per year. These figures are closely followed by LA.

While Washington DC has rather average numbers, Paris stands out with the second highest amount of ridership, carrying an average of 1191 million passengers per year.

To sum up, there is an evident distinction between the six cities, regarding the age, the size of the system and the annual passenger number.

Dear Simon, Your site is really amazing. It taught us lost of informative information which is needed to score high. Anyway, I have a question if you don't mind: What is the main adverb clause in the following of your sentence: The London underground is the oldest system, having opened in 1863.

Is it: The London underground is the oldest system, because it opened in 1863. or The London underground is the oldest system, because it was opened in 1863.

I think when wen want to use having as the reduction, we have to have present or past perfect in our dependent clause but I have the simple past. Am I wrong?!

I´m not sure if this part of your essay is correct: "the number of people who use them each year..."

"Passengers" are not the same as "people using it". There are much less people using it than there are passengers...

The table illustrates the changes occurred in the modes of travelling in England by comparing years of 1985 and 2000. Overall, there is an increase in almost every mode of travel when looking at the trends in 1985 and 2000. There is an overall rise from 4.740 to 6.475 on average distance in miles travelled per person in 1985 and 2000 respectively. The average of distance taken by cars significantly went up from 3.199 to 4.806 in 1985 and 2000 respectively. On the contrary, travelling on feet or by bicycle went down 18 miles for walking and 10 miles for bicycle. The last method of travelling which experienced decline for over 15 years was loal bus with a considerable dropping from 429 to 274. It is likely to say that with 135 miles increase, other types of transports have been the second mostly preferred methods of travelling, which may be planes or ships, with 135 miles increase . Approximate distance in miles taken by long distance bus , train and taxi climbed 60, 80 and 39 miles respectively over 15 years time. In summary, people in England over 15 years period adopted more comfortable life style by preferring to travel considerably by car or other vehicles than by walking or riding bikes.

My attempt:

The table provides information on the opening year, length and annual carried number of passengers of the subways systems in six cities.

Out of the six cities, London was the first to operate the underground railway system, which was also the longest one, 394 kilometers of route. In contrast, Kyoto and Los Angeles built their subway systems over a hundred years later at much smaller scales, having only 11 and 28 km of route respectively.

Paris and Tokyo have run their subway systems from the beginning of the 20th century and it turned out that they carried the highest number of passengers per year. For example, Tokyo's railway carried as many as nearly three times of passenger per year compared to London while its route length was only less than half of London's.

Washington DC's subway systems had decent length of 126 km, carrying 144 million passengers annually. In other words, it had only just over one million of passengers per year per kilometer of route length, the lowest among the six cities.

"opening" is ok, but I prefer "having opened".

The sentence hasn't been reduced tehani. It's normal to write "having done something" e.g. "Having done my work, I went home."

The table compares the opening date, distance and passengers amount of underground railway network in six cities.

Generally, the earlier the underground railway open, the longer distance it reach, the more passenger it carry. But a few exceptions do exist.

London has the oldest and longest subway network with 394 kilometers. The distance of Paris and Tokyo underground are almost less than half of London, at 199 and 155 kilometers respectively. However, the number of passengers in Tokyo is the highest, at 1927 millions per year, compared to 1191 in Paris and 775 in London.

Among three new subway systems, the distance and passengers in Washington D.C. is far exceeding those of Kyoto and Los Angeles. There is 11 kilometers underground railway in Kyoto which is slightly more than 1/3 of Los Angeles, but amount of passengers it carried is almost as same as the latter.

Overall, what stand out from the given data is that the number of kilometres decreased year by year among studied cities. Furthermore, the highest number of travellers in Tokyo's rail, whereas the least in Koyoto and Los Angeles rail system.

Firstly, start with London which was the longest route(394 km) rail system opened in 1863 followed by Paris's rail accounted for almost half(144 km) that of London's rail route. Secondly, Koyoto and Los Angeles opened rail system in 1981 and 2001, respectively; and had a shorter route 45km in Koyoto and 50km in Los Angeles.

Further scrutinising to the table, a higher number of commuters(1927 million) in Tokyo's rail which opened in 1927. However, Koyoto's and Los Angeles's rail system had a lower number of passengers comprised 45 million and 50 millon, in turn. Interestingly, Washington DC had more than three times of travellers that of Koyoto's rail. The noteable point is that there was a great discrepancy in number of commuters among studied rail systems.
