Personal Narrative: my First Day at my New Job

How it works

It was January 18, 2017, a crisp clear morning, the sunlight was just cresting the peak of the mountain and the wind was beginning to pick up. I threw on my ski patrol jacket, grabbed a two-way radio, and hopped on my snowboard. It was my first day at my new job as a ski patrol officer at my local ski hill. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach as I thought back to my training, I hoped I could remember everything I was taught to do if something were to go wrong.

As I got on the ski lift, I could feel the wind blowing snow across my face, the tiny bits of ice hitting my cheeks felt like pins and needles on my skin. Despite my nerves and the cold, I was still excited to get out on the slopes, snowboarding has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I was ecstatic that I was able to get a job doing something I love. Two other ski patrol officers and I did a sweep of the hill so we could give the lift operators the go ahead to open, as we checked the hill, all seemed good and the snow conditions were perfect, the gates then opened. The hill was quickly covered in skiers and snowboarder of all ages and skill levels. Things ran smoothly through the morning until just before lunch, on my last run down the hill before I was going to eat, I heard someone call out for help. I stopped immediately and looked around, to my left I heard the call for help again, I quickly unstrapped my board and ran over to see what was going on. As I crested the hill overlooking the terrain park, I saw a man about six feet tall and 300 plus pounds laying on the ground beneath one of the jumps, I rushed over to him to see what he needed.

Once I got close enough, I could clearly see that his leg was bent at a very unnatural angle just above his ankle. My heart began beating rapidly as I pushed away the feeling of panic that was beginning to set in, I knew that there was no way I could get this guy to ski hut on my own. I took a deep breath and told myself to calm down, I knew I needed to be calm and collected or I was going to stress the injured man out even more then he already was. I then got on my radio and called it in to the other Ski-patrol Officers. The others got there as soon as they could and brought the stretcher sled with them. The head Ski Patrol officer then asked the man a few questions and checked to see if he had a concussion or any other injuries. After he passed the concussion protocol we began working as a team to lift him onto the stretcher. We then placed him on the sled and pulled him back to the ski hut, this was extremely difficult, and I was exhausted by the time we arrived. Once we were in the hut, we were able tell that his leg was for sure broken and needed a splint, I have never done a splint before, so I watched carefully as my boss put one on him. I could tell the man was in a lot of pain, so I talked to him to try and take his mind off the situation. Once the splint was on, he seemed to feel a little better but still couldn’t move on his own, this made thing difficult because we needed to get him into the transport van to bring him to the hospital.

The other officers and I had to support this man and practically carry him to the van, he was exhausted and still in immense pain which made moving him even more difficult. After everything was done and he was taken to the hospital, the one main thing I took from this experience is that remaining calm and collected is one of the most important things when it comes to helping others in an emergency situation. I also learned that communication and working as a team is extremely important too, with everything that happened that day if I hadn’t had a team to help every step of the way then things would not have gone as smoothly as they did.

I had so many expectations on my first day at work. There were so many things that I imagined that I would experience on my first day at work, whether my expectations were met or not does change the fact that my first day at work has come and gone.I gained employment at a large confectionery company. On getting to the office, I met a beautiful female receptionist, who was receiving a phone call at the time I got to the place, so I had to wait for her to finish receiving the call. The receptionist was dressed in a purple suit with purple earrings to fit.

I tendered my approved application letter and she directed me to the sales department where I would be working. The receptionist directed me to the fourth floor, which was the sales department.I climbed the stairs to the fourth floor as the company had no elevator. I remember that I saw about twelve persons in the sales department. They were all dressed in black suits with seven females and five males. This gave me the impression that they all had a particular mode of dressing. The office was actually a hall and it was painted green with about twenty-four rocking chairs and twelve round benches in it.

As I got to the office, they were all looking at me like an alien. I felt like the ground should open up and swallow me as the faces were too much on me. However, I summoned courage, walked majestically into the office, and asked after the Head of the Sales Department. I was surprised to see that the Head of the Sales Department was some inches shorter than I was. I expected that I would meet a huge man as my boss, but spotting him made me see that there is actually a huge difference between fantasy and reality.

The Head of my new department spoke with a thin voice and told me to sit down on a black rocking chair which was directly opposite his own. He gave me a description of my job and told me that, they work collectively to achieve the goal of the company. This was actually the way that an organization operates (Jones 18).I was introduced to the other staff of the Sales Department and my boss told them that, they should accept me as one of them as we shared the same passion and have a common goal.

I shook hands with them and exchanged pleasantries with all of them. I settled down fast on that same day and was acquainted with the mode of operation of the sales department.

If you are an executive onboarding into a new job you must manage your own message. Doing this right requires getting a head start so you can manage the communication leading up to and through your first day. If you wait until your first day to start, you are already behind the curve. You are going to get positioned in others’ minds whether you choose to manage that positioning or not. Given its importance, managing your message is job one leading up to and through Day One.

Our brains remember information “Presented first and last, and have an inclination to forget the middle items.” [1] People will remember vividly their first impressions of you and their last interaction with you. Although you can update your last interaction constantly, you are going to be stuck with those first impressions. So, be intentional when choosing them. Be intentional about the message you send with your words, with your actions, with the order of your actions, with the signs and symbols you deploy.

This is why Day One is such a meaningful pivot point for onboarding. Many will form their first, indelible impression of you on this day. Different people will have different impressions of the same thing depending on their perspective and filters. The problem is that before your first interactions with them, you can’t understand their perspective and filters. This is one of the reasons why it is so valuable to get a head start on relationships and learning before you start.

What Are You Going to Do on Day One?

That question, more than any other, stumps our clients. Most leaders fail to think about and plan Day One as thoroughly as it deserves. For some reason, leaders are often lulled into complacency when deciding what to do on Day One. Often, they passively accept a schedule that someone else has planned out for them. Or they plan to do what seems to be the traditional Day One activities of meeting those people “around” their office or filling out the required forms, unpacking and setting up their office.

Not you. What you say and do on Day One is going to inspire others. Not with cheesy motivational tactics, but through meaningful words and actions that create excitement about the things to come. Do not underestimate Day One’s importance. Plan it with great care and make sure what you do and say communicates your message, exactly as you want it, to the people you most need to reach. Remember, this is personal, order counts, signs and symbols count, and timing counts.

As Carl Buehner put it:

“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” [2]

Everyone you meet on Day One has the same question. Whether it’s masked as a question about your background, your family, your priorities or your favorite sports team, the real underlying question is “What does this mean for me?”

If they work for you, assume they are scared. If they are your peers, assume they feel threatened. If you work for them, assume they are hopeful. But in any case, you have to choose your words and actions carefully to make them feel better about how you’re going to impact their lives.

This is why it’s so valuable to focus on an external platform for change (so they don’t think you think poorly of them,) a vision in which they can see themselves (so it’s not about you,) and a call to action they can adopt (so they can be part of the solution.) All those should lead to a message headline that makes people feel like you’re going to make their lives better.

Bottom line. Onboarding right is about converging and evolving and Day One is about starting relationships. This is why it’s so important to manage your own message.

You’ve aced the interview, received the offer, and signed the paperwork. However, the biggest challenge is yet to come – getting started in your new role, and cementing an excellent reputation as a diligent and talented employee. Whether you’re an entry-level worker or a CEO, research tells us that first impressions are annoyingly persistent , and can follow you for years to come. And just as new presidents are judged on their early accomplishments, so might you be judged on your ability to build rapport with your new teammates and adapt to your new environment. With this in mind, let’s run through some top tips to ensure success during your first 100 days in a new job.

Be proactive 

 Ask your manager if it’s possible for you to come into your new workplace for an informal meet and greet before your start date. This will provide you with an opportunity to make a positive impression as someone who’s proactive and enthusiastic, as well as begin to identify challenges you’re likely to face within your first few weeks. In addition, this will make your first day a lot less stressful, as you’ll already have begun to learn names and orientate yourself within your new workplace. It’s also a good idea to review all the research you did on the organisation during the interview process; re-read staff bios, the company’s websites and social media pages, and re-familiarise yourself with key values and goals. 

Listen more than you talk  

Your first few days on the job should be about absorbing all the information you can, which means following the 90/10 rule: 90% of the time you should be listening to people, and 10% of the time you should be asking questions. This demonstrates that you’re skilled in active listening, and possess great emotional intelligence.  

Focus on relationship building  

During your first week, ask your manager to set up ‘get to know you’ meetings with key people within the business. Be sure to make as many notes as possible, including names, positions, and something memorable about your initial interactions. That way, when you next speak with that person, you’ll be sure to get their name correct, and can begin a new conversation based on details of your previous discussion. It’s also a good idea to find a work buddy – maybe someone on your team, or someone you’ve clicked with in another department. Offer to take them to lunch, and find out more about where you can really add value in your new position. This will have the added benefit of helping you to feel more settled and comfortable. Additionally, take the time to bond with your immediate colleagues. Be sure to make the effort to find out about them as people, and discuss areas in which you can help relieve pressure on them and contribute towards team goals. 

Be on your best behaviour

 It goes without saying that all eyes will be on you during your first 100 days in a new job. It’s therefore important to keep an eye on timekeeping, stick to the dress code, and continue working on building relationships by maintaining a polite and respectful demeanour at all times. However, don’t be tempted to get into unsustainable habits such as always being the first one to arrive and the last one to leave, no matter how keen you are to make a great impression – such behaviour is unsustainable in the long-term, and likely to lead to burn out. 

Establish what success looks like for your role  

After your first week is over, you should begin to get into the nitty gritty of your role. Begin by developing a thorough understanding of your performance metrics; which KPIs are going to be vital in assessing your success? Above and beyond this, make an effort to understand which issues are important to your manager, as this will ensure your strategy and vision is aligned with theirs. 

Don’t be too critical  

As you begin to adjust to your new role, you might find there’s a lot you need to do, or that your predecessor left things rather disorganised. However, it’s important to treat such matters sensitively – you never know who you might offend. You should certainly suggest methods of optimising processes and make your opinion known, but be careful not to step on any toes, and be wary of imposing any large changes until you’re properly acclimated within the company – usually this means waiting until you’ve been there at least three months. 

Set long-term goals

 After the first week or so, you’ll likely have developed a routine and figured out your main priorities. However, in order to ensure lasting success, you need to be thinking of your long-term strategy. What goals would you like to accomplish in three months, six months, and a year? Once you’ve established these targets, set yourself daily tasks that will help you work towards them at a sustainable pace. 

Look for quick wins

Achieving success early on in your role is probably one of the most effective ways to establish credibility and build momentum, as well as set the tone for the months and years to come. This could be bagging a new client, acing a key presentation, or hitting your sales targets – anything tangible that will demonstrate to key stakeholders within the business that hiring you was the right choice.

Find a mentor

 Achieving measurable success within your new role is all well and good, but it’s also vital to ensure you’re working on your personal and professional development. Working with a mentor is proven to have concrete benefits, from broadening your network to helping you expand your knowledge base. If you don’t already have a person you consider to be a mentor, finding one might be the best decision you could make for your career going forward. If there’s no suitable candidates within your new workplace, consider looking further afield to your network or local community groups. 

Demonstrate your willingness to learn

 From new software and systems to company-specific lingo, there’s sure to be plenty to get your head round during your first 100 days in a new job. Be sure to ask appropriate questions, take notes, and make the effort to discover information independently if there’s something you aren’t sure about. Above all, maintain a positive attitude, and if there’s anything you could improve upon, accept direction gracefully.  

Give (and receive)

 Whether it’s making the tea, popping to the shop for milk, or planning your next team social event, volunteering to help as and when you can is sure to make a positive impression within your new company. Although you might feel uncomfortable, you also shouldn’t shy away from asking for favours, as doing so is actually scientifically proven to help you build rapport with others - people like someone more after they’ve done them a favour, which is known as the Benjamin Franklin effect. 

Be authentic

 You’re far more likely to experience success in your new role if you stay true to yourself. This means admitting when you don’t know something, being honest when you’ve made a mistake, and embracing feedback and advice from others. No one is perfect, and you shouldn’t feel pressured to achieve an unrealistic standard. Plus, the more genuine you are, the more others will relate and feel connected to you. Starting a new job is a little bit like visiting a foreign country – everything feels unfamiliar, and you can’t rely on previous relationships or routines to guide you. Because of this, it’s totally normal to feel anxious, and even a little overwhelmed. However, with a little planning and effort, you can be sure to make an impact during your first 100 days in a new job and lay the groundwork for success in the months and years ahead.
