The Karimoku Case Study 03 Furniture Collection
Minimalist furniture and lighting that blends scandinavian and japanese design..
Launched in 2019 with a collection of tailor-made furniture pieces, Karimoku Case Study has now introduced its third range of bespoke products. The lifestyle brand was developed by leading Japanese furniture manufacturer Karimoku Furniture Inc. in a collaboration with Norm Architects and Keiji Ashizawa Design. Each of the brand’s collections celebrate timeless design, simplicity, traditional craftsmanship, and serene beauty. Custom-made for a specific architectural projects, the products then become a part of the Karimoku Case Study line. Apart from their beautiful design, they also feature natural and sustainable materials; from bamboo and washi paper to eco-friendly glue made from wheat. Originally created for the Archipelago House, the brand’s third range effortlessly combines Scandinavian and Japanese design in elegant products.
The line comprises both furniture and lighting designed by Norm Architects as well as a sofa designed by Keiji Ashizawa. Compact and comfortable, Club Chair N-CC01 features a rounded backrest with an upholstered interior and a wooden exterior. Small overhangs on the armrests and backrest provide great grip and thus an easy way to move the chair. The N – DC01 dining chair fuses Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics in a simple design, while the NDT01 dining table draws inspiration from the branches of a tree with slender and heavy elements kept in perfect balance.
Designed with simple rectangular shapes, the Book Box N-BB01 storage boxes offer a stylish solution to declutter a room. The Karimoku Case Study 03 collection also includes the N- CT01 coffee table that pays homage to the facades of Japanese temples, the N – ST01 side table, and the N – SS01 shelving system. Lighting designs include lamps with washi paper shades and pendant lights that mimic the silhouette of the Archipelago House. Photographs© Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Karl Knudsen, Norm Architects.

Karimoku Case
This contemporary Japanese brand, witch mainly focused on wooden furniture, is built on a shared love of serene beauty, timeless design and materials in their purest form. The pieces are all designed by successful international architects such as Norm Architects, Norman Foster and Keiji Ashizawa.
KARIMOKU CASE STUDY PHILOSOPHY AND THEIR DESIGNERS
What uniquely is about this collection is that it was created from "cases" which means that all products were first applied in a project, a "case," and then a few of these models where selected to be included in their collection.
It started with the Kinuta Terrace apartments in Tokyo where Japanese architect Keiji Ashizawa invited his friends Norms architects from Copenhagen to design the apartment together. Through this collaboration the foundation for the brand was born. Karimoku made all the custom wooden parts and the individual furniture for the apartments, together they selected the first 12 unique pieces of wooden furniture for the collection. These formed the start for the Karimoku Case Study collection.
This approach sets the Karimoku Case Study collection apart from most collections that are often created more from a comercial point of view. With this approach, in addition to their love of wood, the holistic relationship to the architecture and functionality of the projects plays a big role. This focus defines not only how finely the products function but also how they will look aesthetically.
The inspiration for this approach comes from the "case study houses" of the 1940s in the United States where up-and-coming and established architects were asked to design model homes for the future. Many of these houses, with their updated layouts, structures and materials, are still considered highlights of mid-century modernist architecture today.
THE MODELS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
On the brand's website, all the cases can also be found again along with the products that resulted from them. These include both residential and corporate projects.
In the recent interior designed by Norm architects, restaurant ÄNG in a Swedish vineyard is is easy to see how the designs adapt to that special environment. In particular, the elegant and very comfortable N-DC01 dining chair plays a major role in their concept: 'the total gastronomic tasting experience' of 21 courses.
The interior of the Notabene shoe store in the center of Copenhagen, also designed by Karimoku Case Study, reflects the craftsmanship of the handmade shoes with the beautifully sculptural N-S03 lounger and bench specially designed for this purpose.
The by Keiji Ashizawa-designed Blue Bottle Cafe in Yokohama, produced the upholstered N-SC01 side chair with low back that slides away under the table. In the same style the N-CC01 club chair was designed for the Archipelago outdoor house. This chair was described as the lounger with the smallest footprint and is also used at different project such as ÄNG.
We are fans from the first hour of this beautiful brand and but very excited to see how the collection will grow considering that it will only be through realized projects.
What does the Norm architects team have in store for us and what is Keiji Ashizawa working on next. And then the big question which other international names will help build this thriving collection in the future?
THE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND HISTORY OF KARIMOKU CASE STUDY
Piece by piece, the designs are crafted and hand-finished by the best woodworkers in Japan, the country known for having the highest quality of woodworking in the world. Only the best quality wood is used so with all this love, craftsmanship and care they can last for generations. If you love wood like the Japanese do then you will undoubtedly love this pure handmade furniture.
The mother company Karimoku began in 1940 as a woodworking shop in the village of Kariya. In 1960 they launched their first own furniture line and then grew into a major player in the Japanese wood furniture market. For 50 years, they have been No. 1 in Japan in terms of residential furniture sales.
In other words, a great deal of knowledge and experience is built into every object, making the furniture not only suitable for homes but also perfectly functioning in a project environment such as a hotel, restaurant or work environment.

NORM ARCHITECTS
With clean lines, a crisp design language and a soft and comfortable inner, the Side Chair mimics the architecture of the Blue Bottle Coffee shop. With its low backrest and small footprint, it's not really a dining chair, neither a stool - but combines the best of the two and therefore serves the real needs of the cafe.

VIEW PROJECT
Norm Architects
Norm Architects was founded in 2008. The multidisciplinary design studio works within the fields of industrial design, residential architecture, commercial interiors, photography and art direction. Much like human well-being, the essence of Norm Architects’ work is found in balance — between richness and restraint, order and complexity.
Each project — whether in architecture, interiors, design or creative direction — is imbued with the same intrinsic quality: a simplicity that carries bigger ideas. Guided by the body and mind rather than by trends or technology, their projects explore ideas that not only look good, but feel good too: Architecture be- comes thoughtful, minimalism acquires softness and visual matter assumes haptic qualities. Their work is sharp and crisp, and exudes, tacitly, a focus on quality, details and durability. Situated in one of the oldest streets of Copenhagen, Denmark, the studio is respectful to its context here and build on the traditions of Scandinavian de- sign — of timeless aesthetics, natural materials and upholding modernist principles of restraint and refinement. Through exploring what it is that heightens the human senses regardless of personal preference, their projects strip spaces, objects, ideas and images back to their simplest form. Their expertise lies in finding the balance — when there’s nothing more to either add nor take away.

With a holistic approach to architecture and design, the studio behind each collection creates a coherent style and setting, working their way from the architectural framework into the interiors and objects within the space, designing for specific needs and structures, rather than merely considering the aesthetic experience. Karimoku Case wishes to introduce a thoughtful brand that serves to preserve the natural and timeless, using materials that possess an inherent richness and gain beauty with time and age.
As a contemporary design brand, Karimoku’s approach is aimed at creating wholesome, human-centric design that, first and foremost, serves its user and context. It’s a subtle rebellion against the trend-driven, inspired by the durable ways of nature, and composed entirely of materials that possess timeless beauty.

N-LC02 Lounge Chair
This version of the N-LC02 lounge chair has the same basic construction as its relative, the N-LC01, but with a free-hanging seat in either leather or canvas. The seat forms according to the body of the user and creates a much more lightweight expression - a concept that carries its references from the traditional “safari chairs”.

Case Study: Zenit St Petersburg 3-2 Dinamo Moscow 13/9/2014
It would be typical for this sort of game to be nervy as both teams to try and cancel the other out, yet with five goals scored this obviously wasn’t the case. Some of the alterations to the starting line-ups hinted that both coaches had attempted to tailor their teams to stop the other, but in changing their team had rendered the other’s changes futile.
Stanislav Cherchesov changed to a 4-4-2, moving Valbuena from his central position behind the strikers out to the left as Dinamo sat back in two banks of four. With Zenit usually lining up in a 4-2-3-1, the idea seemed to be to stop them from playing it into their midfield, with Kevin Kuranyi and Aleksandr Kokorin conscious of their positioning in front of the midfield. The issue with this was Andre Villas-Boas’ reshaping of his midfield: rather than going with the usual double pivot, they shifted to a 4-3-3 that should have had Javi Garcia lining up against Valbuena had Dinamo stuck with their usual 4-2-3-1.
The two changes ruled the other’s out and it made for a muddled beginning. With two men on Javi Garcia, it was obviously difficult for Zenit to move the ball through the middle, Dinamo forcing them to go out wide, yet equally Dinamo were essentially overstocked in this area defensively (Kokorin recognised the pointlessness of having him and Kuranyi on Garcia part way through the first half and started pressing the Zenit defence while Kuranyi sat) and found it difficult to create when they had the ball themselves. The attackers around Valbuena usually have to push back the defence to open up space for him to work in but out on the left, he often wasn’t in this space when Dinamo tried to break or would have to sprint cross-field to reach it.
Valbuena (nametagged) operates from deep as his teammates push Zenit back in the build-up to his goal
The opening goal was arguably an example of this working well, with Valbuena clearly operating much deeper before moving forward to shoot, but his exquisite lob was far more about Valbuena’s brilliance than strategy and perhaps made a greater argument for why he should have been starting centrally.
Likewise, Zenit’s equaliser, although coming from the wide area Dinamo had forced them into, had little to do with their strategy. If Valbuena’s dink over Yuri Lodygin was nearing footballing perfection, the deflection off Douglas was its antithesis.
Neither team really took control of the match, although Zenit looked brighter. Danny was his usual influential self, drifting infield and deeper, while they also had a number of good breakaways when Andrei Arshavin pulled out to the left, giving Hulk lots of room to burst into. Attacks would frequently break down when the ball reached Arshavin, either bouncing off or rolling under his foot, making it abundantly clear why this was his first start of the season. Their more proactive approach to defending, that saw Alex Witsel regularly step up alongside Arshavin to push up against Dinamo’s defence, paid off when Hulk caught William Vainqueur on the ball just outside his area and played in Arshavin to take the lead.
Dinamo reshuffled at half-time and moved Valbeuna into the centre in a 4-3-1-2. The change gave them more attacking threat, but opened them up defensively and much of the second half went from end to end. Dinamo were rewarded with a goal from a set-piece.
The game looked to be heading to a draw until Danny slid a through ball into Igor Smolnikov for Zenit to take it at the death. Either result would have been justified: the game was even, but Zenit were a shade ahead of Dinamo at every step, and it’s little surprise they have taken their early lead at the top of the Russian Premier League.
