Return Student Work

Once you are finished grading student work, you can return it to the students. This is especially important if the student submitted a Google file. When a student submits a Google file, ownership of the document transfers to the teacher until the teacher returns the document. Returning work also lets the student know you looked at it. If you assign grades through Classroom, the student receives the grade and any comment you made when you return the work.

Grade, Return, and Delete Assignments

After you create assignments, they show up for students on the Classwork page. It's their responsibility to complete and turn them in by the due date. You can check the progress of an assignment on the Classwork page by clicking the assignment. This gives you an at-a-glance view of how many students have turned it in and how many additional students it's assigned to. When it’s time to review and grade assignments, you’ll do that from the Grades page.

Grade and Return Assignments

Here you see a table with each assignment listed at the top and separate cells to add a grade for every student in the class. If the assignment is past the due date, it displays as Missing for any students who didn't turn it in.

  • Click the More button in the cell where you want to enter a grade.

Create Assignments

The completed assignment opens in a new browser tab. You can add a comment to the file using the icon on the left side of the Files pane. Or, view the file in a new browser tab without any of the grading options by clicking the icon to the right of the file name in the Files pane.

  • Add a grade for the assignment.
  • (Optional) Add a comment and click Post .

Create Assignments

The dialog box notifies you that the student will now be able to view their grade.

Create Assignments

Once the assignment is graded, you can close the tab with the assignment to return to the gradebook.

Delete Assignments

If an assignment is no longer needed, simply delete it. Deleting an assignment removes it, along with any associated grades or comments, from Classroom. However, any files or attachments created in Google Drive will still remain. You’ll need to manually delete those in Drive if you don’t want to retain copies.

Be aware that deleting an assignment is permanent. There is no way to undo the deletion.

  • On the Grades page, click the More button for an assignment.

Create Assignments

The dialog box notifies you that any grades and comments associated with the assignment will also be deleted.

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom, or retract a submission, on a computer or mobile device

  • You can submit an assignment in Google Classroom under the "Classwork" section on the desktop site or mobile app.
  • To submit an assignment in Google Classroom, you must first "View assignment" and then select the "Add or create" option under the "Your work" menu.
  • Links and Google Drive attachments, including a document, slide, sheet, drawing, or PDF file, can all be uploaded and submitted in Google Classroom.
  • You can upload multiple files, unsubmit assignments, and leave notes for your instructor in Google Classroom.

You've logged in to Google Classroom , have joined a class, and accessed class materials. Now, it's time to submit an assignment.

To submit an assignment in Google Classroom, you'll first need to navigate to the "Classwork" section. You can then find your assignment and attach your work.

From there, it's as easy as turning it in. Google Classroom also allows users to unsubmit their assignments if you need to make changes or leave a private comment for a teacher about the status of your work.

It's important to note that if you don't click "Turn in" after you attach your work, it won't be submitted. To verify the status of your assignment, double-check to see if it is labeled as "Turned in."

When submitting assignments to Google Classroom on mobile, you'll also need to make sure you have the iPhone or Android app installed. You can search and download Google Classroom through the app store on your phone.

Here's how to submit an assignment on Google Classroom.

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom on desktop

1. Open your web browser and go to classroom.google.com .

2. Select your class.

3. At the top of your dashboard, choose "Classwork."

4. Click on an assignment, then select "View Assignment."

5. Under "Your Work," choose "Add or Create."

6. From there, click "Google Drive" to attach a document you've already created and saved in your Drive by selecting it from the file window that appears. If you have multiple documents, attach them all this way.

  • Note: You can add a link to a Drive document or attach a file from your computer. You may also start an assignment here by creating a new document, slide, sheet, or drawing on this page.

7. To leave a private comment for your teacher, enter it in the appropriately labeled text box on the right. Then click the small triangular "paper airplane" icon to post it.

8. Next, click "Turn in" or "Mark as done" to confirm your submission and change the assignment status to "Turned in."

  • Note: If your teacher has assigned a collaborative document that you worked on or another kind of outside assignment, you may see "Mark as done" instead of "Turn in."

How to unsubmit an assignment in Google Classroom on desktop

If you've submitted a document, but find that you need to edit out errors or add in missing content, Google Classroom offers a way to retract your submission. Navigate to the page you turned your assignment in, click "Unsubmit," and confirm. You can always turn it in again by following the above steps.

How to submit an assignment in Google Classroom on the mobile app

1. Open the Google Classroom app on your device.

2. Tap on your class.

3. Choose "Classwork" from the bottom of the app screen.

Google Classroom lets educators attach or link PDFs, Google Drive files, or even YouTube videos while distributing learning activities (assignments).

Here’s how you do it:

  • Select the Classroom you want to work from
  • Click on the (+) button on the bottom-right corner of your screen
  • Choose ‘Create assignment’
  • The assignment creation pop-up will reveal itself and then enter the title, instructions, topic, and deadline
  • Click on the type of attachment you would like to include
  • Click ‘Assign’

Attaching files is great for adding resources from the internet or ones that are teacher created. It also is a simple process to attach teacher-made Google products for the learners to use to complete their assignments, such as Google Docs or Slides.

Educators can choose how their learners interact with these files. All of these options will be accessible once you upload a file or attach a Google Drive link. A pull-down menu will appear next to the file name with the following options:

(a) students can view the file  – learners can read the file, but not make any changes to it.

(b) students can edit the file  – learners can make changes to the file and edit it as needed.

  (c) make a copy for each student  – each learner will get an editable copy of the file. It will also automatically include their name in the title. The copies will be saved in your Google Drive underneath the folder ‘Classroom.’

Interact with attachments

This page discusses implementation details for creating an attachment and working with student submissions. Note that you may need to supply attachment-related parameters when making making these requests.

Create an attachment

Create an attachment by issuing a CREATE request to the appropriate courses.*.addOnAttachments.create endpoint. Your request must include an instance of AddOnAttachment in the request body.

The following fields are required when creating an attachment:

  • title : the string name of the attachment.
  • teacherViewUri : the URI for the Teacher View of the attachment.
  • studentViewUri : the URI for the Student View of the attachment.
  • studentWorkReviewUri : the URI for the teacher to see the student's work on the attachment. This field is only required for activity-type attachments.

You may want to include some of the following optional fields:

  • dueDate and dueTime if specifying when the attachment is due.
  • maxPoints : the maximum grade for the attachment. Must be a non-zero value if you want to support grade passback. Applies to activity-type attachments only.

See the AddOnAttachment resource reference for more details on these fields.

Student submission details

A typical submission workflow follows these steps:

  • A student launches the studentViewUri to complete an activity.
  • The add-on retrieves a submissionId from the getAddOnContext method using student credentials.
  • The submissionId and attachmentId are stored by the add-on developer as the unique identifier of the student's work. In the event that a teacher copies an assignment in Classroom, you can use the composite key of these two parameters to display a new attachment in the copied assignment. See our page on copied content for more details.
  • A teacher interested in reviewing student work launches the studentWorkReviewUri . The request includes the following query parameters: courseId , itemId , itemType , attachmentId , and submissionId .
  • The add-on developer uses these four IDs to retrieve the student work. Use the courses.courseWork.addOnAttachments.studentSubmissions endpoint to retrieve or modify information about a student submission.

Detect submission state

Issue a GET request to the courses.courseWork.addOnAttachments.studentSubmissions endpoint to get details about a specific submissionId . You receive an AddOnAttachmentStudentSubmission object, which contains the submission's grade ( pointsEarned ) and current state ( postSubmissionState ). The submission state can be one of the following values:

  • NEW , if the student has never accessed the submission.
  • CREATED , if the student has created a submission but not yet submitted it.
  • TURNED_IN , if the student has submitted their work to the teacher.
  • RETURNED , if the teacher has returned the submission to the student.
  • RECLAIMED_BY_STUDENT , if the student has "unsubmitted" their work.

Use this endpoint to detect the state of the student's work in your add-on. You might then adjust the views or options provided to the student depending on the state returned. This might include features such as:

  • Displaying the turn-in status of assignments within your add-on. This may help students avoid potential confusion and ensure they don't mistakenly fail to turn in an assignment.
  • Restricting submission edit privileges. If the assignment has status CREATED or RECLAIMED_BY_STUDENT , the student might be allowed to edit their submission. If the assignment has status TURNED_IN or RETURNED , the student might not be allowed to edit their submission.

Grades and multiple attachments

Only one add-on attachment can be used to set the grade for a single assignment . If a teacher creates more than one activity-type attachment that provides a maxPoints value, only the first such attachment can set the assignment grade. Either leave the maxPoints value unset or set it to zero to disable grade passback for an attachment.

Set a submission's grade

You can modify a student submission by sending a PATCH request to the courses.courseWork.addOnAttachments.studentSubmissions endpoint. The request body must include an instance of AddOnAttachmentStudentSubmission with the modified values. Set the pointsEarned field to modify a submission's grade. The value passed in pointsEarned becomes a draft grade visible to the teacher in the Classroom UI. Teachers can modify the draft grade before returning the assignment to students. See Overview of grading in the Classroom UI for details on how grades are presented to teachers.

Note that you can set the grade with pointsEarned only if the following are true:

  • The attachment must have a positive maxPoints value.
  • The add-on must have been the original creator of the attachment.

Note also that you can modify an already-created AddOnAttachment 's maxPoints value by issuing a PATCH request to the addOnAttachments endpoint.

When to set a grade

You have some choice over when a grade is passed back to Google Classroom. The critical distinction is whether you choose to store teacher's credentials, as only the teacher can modify a grade.

There are two add-on moments at which you might pass a grade to Google Classroom: when the student completes their work or when the teacher opens the student's work in the Student Work Review iframe.

If you want to set grades when the student completes the work, you must store a teacher's offline credentials, then retrieve and use them to modify the grade when the student completes the work. This method provides some potential benefits:

  • Provide seamless grade updates. Teachers don't need to take any special action to cause grades to populate in the Classroom UI.
  • Provide real-time insight into a class's progression through an assignment. By setting grades as students complete attachments, teachers can get a sense of their students' understanding without opening every submission.

Note that this approach also allows for an asynchronous approach to grade sync. You might periodically poll the AddOnAttachmentStudentSubmission endpoint to detect when a student has submitted their work. When it has been submitted, set the submission's grade using the stored credentials.

If you don't want to load the teacher's credentials during a student session, you can use the active teacher's credentials when they load the student's submission in the Student Work Review iframe . However, this may not provide an especially smooth user experience as grades in the Classroom UI don't update in real time and teachers would be required to open every submission's Student Work Review iframe.

Detect changes in assignment grades

it's possible for teachers to edit the grade settings in Classroom after an assignment has been created. Such edits might include:

  • Changing the assigned points value.
  • Changing an assignment's maxPoints value.
  • Changing whether the assignment should be graded at all.

To see the current grading settings of an assignment, we recommend that you send a GET request to the courses.courseWork endpoint. The response includes the current maxPoints value. An ungraded assignment has a null or zero maxPoints value.

If you have passed a grade back to Classroom, use the courses.courseWork.addOnAttachments.studentSubmissions endpoint to fetch or alter the grade for an add-on attachment. The grade value is set using the pointsEarned field. Consider checking and, if necessary, updating this value if your product allows teachers to edit a student's score for a particular activity.

Google Classroom comes back from summer break with a better approach to group projects

Assigning group work will finally be less of a headache for teachers..

Google logo with colorful shapes

Today, Google announced it’s making assigning group work in Google Classroom easier and faster with a new feature called Student Groups . Teachers will now be able to add individual students to predefined groups before creating and assigning group work.

Google is entering this school year with a bunch of new updates for the now 10-year-old Classroom platform , like a new Education Navigator , a Read Along feature, and Dark Mode to the mobile app. But teachers have been waiting for something like Student Groups for a long time.

Previously, teachers would need to create an assignment first and then individually add students to that assignment if they wanted to assign group work. For occasional group projects, this worked okay, but it was a pain for teachers who regularly have their students do group work — especially if their students remained in the same groups throughout the school year.

But now, the process of assigning group work is no longer as much of a hassle. From inside the People tab, teachers can use the new Group button above the class roster to create, name, add, and modify custom student groups. These groups will be an available option whenever a teacher creates an assignment.

Previously, Google added the ability to import class rosters from certain Student Information Systems (SIS), which meant some teachers no longer had to manually add student names one at a time into every new Classroom they created.
