Review-1

Aamir Khan -- the name is synonymous with dedication, perfection and qualitative cinema… His films have set new benchmarks at the ticket windows: GHAJINI was the first Hindi film to gross Rs 100 cr… 3 IDIOTS created a sensation when it crossed Rs 200 cr mark [it was the first Hindi film to cross the magical figure]… PK, the highest grosser to date in the domestic market [Hindi films], was also the first film to cruise past Rs 300 cr…

Obviously, DANGAL carries colossal expectations on its shoulders. The last biggie of the year 2016 is also expected to bail out the industry, since 2016 hasn’t been kind to Hindi cinema. The biz is at an all-time low, with most films sinking faster than Titanic.

Let’s clarify a pertinent doubt before I proceed ahead… DANGAL is *not* similar to SULTAN. There’s a world of a difference between the two films that eye the same sport: Wrestling. SULTAN was a work of fiction, with focus on the love story, while DANGAL is based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained his daughters Geeta and Babita and made them world class wrestlers. So there!

2016 has witnessed stories based on real-life characters/incidents. In addition, films soaked in reality, generally speaking, take the realistic route without bowing to market diktats or over-stretching realities. DANGAL stays true to the material, yet its efficient storyteller Nitesh Tiwari along with the team of writers [story idea: Divya Rao; writers: Nitesh Tiwari, Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain, Nikhil Mehrotra] ensures that the film connects with every segment of moviegoers. Besides, the writers stay away from the familiar and tried-and-tested tropes to woo Aamir’s legion of fans, which is credible.

DANGAL is a flawless piece of work -- it’s captivating, unpredictable, spellbinding, entertaining and never overstays its welcome [run time: 2.41 hours]. Most importantly, DANGAL is seeped in Indian ethos. The highs and lows, the triumphs and failures, the laughter and heartbreak… you smile, you laugh, you weep, you cheer, you feel ecstatic… DANGAL encompasses it all adroitly, with the finale leaving you exhilarated.

The plot: Mahavir Singh Phogat [Aamir Khan] is a wrestler whose sole dream is to win gold for India in the sport of wrestling and since he is unable to do so himself, he decides that he will train his son to become a champion. However, Mahavir is blessed with daughters and feels his dream of winning a medal for India lies shattered.

One day, Mahavir gets to know that his young daughters have had an altercation with neighbourhood boys and bashed them black and blue. That’s when he realises that his dream of winning a gold medal for the country in wrestling could be achieved by his daughters. Mahavir decides to train his young daughters into world class wrestlers.

The girls are reluctant initially and find it tough to cope with the gruelling training sessions, but soon become proficient in the sport. Will Geeta and Babita manage to fulfil their father’s dream?

After having directed CHILLAR PARTY and BHOOTHNATH RETURNS, Nitesh Tiwari delivers his most accomplished work so far. Most films take a long time to come to the point, but the middle and final acts of DANGAL are as attention-grabbing and enticing as its first act. Tiwari deserves brownie points for narrating the story with flourish and the message that the film conveys resonates loud and clear, without getting preachy at any point. The narrative style is simplistic, yet solid and that’s what catches your eye.

Review-2

Emotions have always been the mainstay of Aamir Khan’s films and DANGAL is no exception. They are genuine and relatable. Besides, there’s a strong emotional connect as DANGAL depicts the delicate relationship shared by a father and his daughters most realistically. The drama is spot-on and the emotional quotient is poignant and heartrending. The penultimate moments take the  film to an all-time high, imparting the sheen and sparkle that it deserves.

Pritam contributes a couple of winning melodies that compliment the goings-on delightfully. ‘Haanikaarak Bapu’, ‘Dhaakad’, ‘Gilehriyaan’ and the title track are already well-liked and the best part is, they have been smartly integrated into the proceedings. The background score is effectual and enhances the impact of the drama. The DoP [Setu] deserves tremendous praise. The frames do complete justice to the vision of the director. Dialogue empowers the film wonderfully and at places, are clap-worthy.

The wrestling sequences are superbly executed. Be it the training sessions or the  dhobi-pachhad s or vanquishing the opponents in the  akhada  and in the ring, it’s a delight to watch these sequences on screen. Will surely evoke whistles and applause. Editing [Ballu Saluja] is razor-sharp and watertight. There’s no room for restlessness or boredom here.

DANGAL is, without a shred of doubt, an Aamir Khan show all the way. The supremely skilled actor returns after a hiatus [PK] with yet another sterling act that doesn’t miss a beat. He takes giant strides as an actor and gives the film the much-needed power. His expressions, body language and the much-talked-about transformation from a fit and fine young wrestler to a pot-bellied, middle-aged father speak volumes. Another commanding performance that needs to be highlighted is that of Sakshi Tanwar. She compliments Aamir’s character marvellously, displaying the varied emotions seamlessly.

Both, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra inject freshness to their respective characters. Fatima is fantastic as Aamir’s daughter, who makes her father and nation proud of her achievements. She is in top form. Ditto for Sanya, who makes her debut with DANGAL. The ease with which she portrays her role is applaud-worthy. As a matter of fact, the relationship that Fatima and Sanya share with their on-screen parents [Aamir and Sakshi] seems straight out of life and identifiable.

The actors who portray their younger parts -- Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar -- excel. Frankly, one is so invested in the characters that it makes it easy to root for them as they go from strength to strength during the course of the film.

Aparshakti Khurrana is an actor to watch out for. Enacting the part of Aamir's nephew, the youngster not only contributes immensely to some lively and wonderful moments, but also delivers a first-rate performance. Ritwik Sahore [Aparshakti's younger part] is equally efficient. Girish Kulkarni [coach] is, again, a hugely competent actor, who shines in his part. Vivan Bhathena, in a cameo, is perfect.

On the whole, DANGAL is a masterpiece. A terrific film that stays in your heart and remains etched in your memory much after the screening has concluded. A brilliant film that restores your faith in Hindi cinema. Actually, it won’t be erroneous to state that DANGAL is the finest film to come out of the Hindi film industry in a long, long time and mark my words, it will be remembered as a classic in times to come. It blends drama, emotions, sportsmanship and patriotism extraordinarily… the icing on the cake being Aamir Khan’s towering act. This rich-in-merits film has a major advantage too -- the holidays ahead [Christmas and New Year] -- which will ensure a glorious run at the ticket counters. A must, must watch!

Movie review: Dangal

Rating: 5 stars

Aamir Khan has done it again. Dangal is the best film of the year. Without a shadow of doubt. This film is a thundering body slam of honest emotions and sheer hard work. Director Nitesh Tiwar i’s film has a firm grip on its narrative. It never falters, it always stays steady and sure footed like a pro wrestler. But the best part of the film is its subtle nod to true gender equality. Mahavir Singh Phogat ’s daughters Geeta and Babita have been depicted with the utmost respect. There’s a constant dialogue about levelling the playing field for the girl child. And then you have the wrestling bouts which look like the real deal. Dangal is perfect in every sense of the word. Rarely do movies get so good.

The story starts off with a quick recap of Mahavir Singh Phogat’s life. He’s established as a wrestler who gave up his dream but harbours a great passion and zeal to make his future son a gold medalist. After getting four daughters he gives up on his dream only to suddenly realise that his daughters Geeta and Babita have an appetite for fighting. He starts training them like they’re Haryanvi boys. He whips them into disciplined athletes laying the foundation for their stellar future achievements in the sport of wrestling. But Dangal is so much more than just the journey of two girls from rural India to international acclaim. The real soul of this story is the pride and passion with which a father empowers his daughters. He devotes his entire being to making them champions. Slowly and steadily his obsession for wrestling glory transforms into love and compassion. He remains stern and yet sensitive to his daughters’ ambitions and emotions. Even when they don’t respect him, Mahavir Singh Phogat continues to be the better man, a stellar father and the hero that Indian stories really deserve.

Director Nitesh Tiwari and his team of co-writers Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Meharotra craft a superlative film. The first of the film is dedicated to an engaging story where the girls grow up under the tutelage of their father and coach. While the second half explores their journey into the world of international wrestling. Both halves have contrasting themes. The rustic environs of North India and the deeply patriarchal culture find a sublime satire in the first leg of Dangal. While the second half becomes a gritty tale of sport adventure and young ambition. As Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters discover their dreams and ambitions, Dangal rustles up a storm of genuine and brilliant emotions. The film’s direction and writing is so riveting that it coaxes it’s viewer to stand up and applaud.

Great editing and filmmaking technique aside, Dangal features wrestling matches that are authentic and real. Watching young actresses Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra grapple with their opponents is like watching the Commonwealth Games live. Their hard work and dedication is phenomenal. Fatima plays the elder daughter Geeta to great effect. She’s definitely a find for the future. Young Zaira Wasim who plays the young Geeta is even better. When she’s on screen, she even steals thunder from her superstar colleague.

Talking of superstars, Aamir Khan is the strength, conviction, dedication and genius of Dangal. His performance is a lot more complex than just the striking physical transformation. His portrayal of Mahavir Singh Phogat is a masterclass in acting. That rare occasions when you can’t spot the actor in a character.

Dangal has everything that you’d ask from the perfect Hindi film. Its funny, dramatic, dark, serious, emotional all rolled into one seamless cinematic  gem. It is the movie of the year. A film that deserves a standing ovation. A story so good that it will make you feel like a proud Indian. This is a truly special film.

3 Idiots

Did you know

  • Trivia The movie is a real life story based on Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained "dangal" to 6 girls, 4 of them were his very own while 2 were that of his brother. Interestingly, all of them won medals at some or the other level!
  • Goofs Teenage Babita is left-handed, which you can see from the way she claps during Geeta's Dangal matches. But she becomes right-handed when she gets older, which you can see from the way she claps during Geeta's Commonwealth games.

Mahavir Singh Phogat : You have to fight in a way that people will remember you. If you win silver, sooner or later, you will be forgotten. If you win gold, you will be an example, And examples are given, child... not forgotten. See those girls? If you win tomorrow, you will not win alone. Millions of girls like them will win along with you. It will be a victory for every girl who is considered inferior to boys; who is forced into household chores, who is married off to just raise children. Tomorrow's match is the most important one. Because tomorrow, we are not fighting just that Australian, but all those people who think lesser of girls.

Aamir Khan with star cast in Dangal Movie Poster

Dangal Movie Review: Be Prepared To Walk Out of This Film Wiping Tears

Dangal Movie Review: Be Prepared To Walk Out of This Film Wiping Tears

Director:  Nitesh Tiwari

Cast:  Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Aparshakti Khurrana

Before you watch Dangal, you need to know that Haryana treats its women very badly.  The state has one of the worst male-female sex ratios in India and an abysmal female literacy rate. Which makes the Phogat story even more of a miracle.

Mahavir Singh Phogat belongs to a Hindu Jat family from an obscure village called Balali – think patriarchy on steroids. A national level wrestler himself, Phogat, had a dream to win gold medals for India. He also had four daughters. When they were very young, Phogat realized that there was no contradiction here. Daughters can bring home medals too. So he trained them to become wrestlers. The eldest Geeta became the first Indian woman to win gold in wrestling at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the first Indian woman in wrestling to qualify for the Olympics. Four years later Babita followed in her sister's footsteps and won gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Dangal is the story of these unlikely champions, of a father who refused to bend and of the daughters he molded into steel. Director Nitesh Tiwari hits the familiar notes of the sports film in which the underdog becomes a champion. But Dangal works because it is about so much more – this is a film about an authoritarian but loving father and his determined daughters. It's about the immense personal sacrifices and rigor that sport demands – for these girls, long hair, nail polish and eating pani puri was a luxury. Dangal is also about the exhilaration of excellence – the sheer joy of winning. And most importantly, Dangal is about innate strength of women – both in the akhada and outside it.

One of the triumphs of this film is the casting by Mukesh Chhabra. Each actor seems a perfect fit. The real stand-out is Zaira Wasim, who plays the young Geeta. She has a fierce screen presence and is an absolute natural. Fatima Sana Shaikh who plays the older Geeta is also terrific. One of the film's highlights is a sequence in which Geeta wrestles with her father – sport becomes a battle of wills. Geeta's youthful arrogance and Mahavir's hurt bewilderment is heart-breaking. Sanya Malhotra as older Babita and Sakshi Tanwar provide strong support. And I must mention Aparshakti Khurrana, who plays the hapless cousin brother who is forced to wrestle with these iron ladies. He's brings in just the right dose of comedy that this family requires.

And among this cast of mostly unknown faces, stands an actor we have seen onscreen for almost 30 years – Aamir Khan.  And here's the miracle – he totally blends in.  There is not a trace of superstar about him or a hint of vanity.  For most of the film, he's an old, overweight man.  Given the Bollywood obsession with looking youthful and flaunting six packs, this itself is an act of courage.  But Aamir doesn't just look the part.  He also becomes it.  He is by turns, ferocious and tender.  There's a lovely scene in which he's pressing his daughter's feet as she sleeps because that is the only time he can express his love.  He needs them to see him as the unrelenting coach.  It's a masterful performance.

The writing in Dangal is clunky in places. The beginning has too much exposition and there is a melodramatic climactic twist that I found unnecessary and unconvincing. The wrestling scenes are skillfully filmed – there were times when the thud of bodies on mats made me jump. But it does get repetitive and stretched – especially in the second half. But when Geeta finally wins, it is so rousing and emotional that you forget these soft spots.

I walked out of this film, wiping tears and feeling invincible. I felt I could wrestle down anything that hit me.

How do you put a rating on that?

Dangal movie review: Aamir Khan and Phogat sisters’ story win the bout

Dangal movie review by rohit vats: dangal could be aamir khan’s his best performance till date. yes, even better than lagaan..

Dangal Cast : Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Girish Kulkarni, Aparshakti Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra Director: Nitesh Tiwari Rating: 4/5

Aamir Khan is receiving rave reviews for Dangal.

First they ignore you, Then they laugh at you, Then they fight you, Then you win.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are years away. Geeta Phogat (Zaira Wasim, Fatima Sana Shaikh) has just returned to Balali, her village in Haryana, after months of preparation at the National Sports Academy in Patiala. Something about her has changed. She isn’t exactly the same girl her father, former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat ( Aamir Khan ), trained. She is more confident, ambitious, better skilled and ready to take on the world by storm.

On the other hand, the rustic Mahavir wants to keep things simple. The tough patriarch wants his daughter to remain focused on the elusive international wrestling medals for India. He doesn’t like the way Geeta has been sucked into the new training regime. He thinks his methods are better than the coach’s at the academy.

Mahavir wants a son to fulfil his dream. (YouTube)

This is the beginning of a war that’s surprisingly physical and abnormally mental. He challenges Geeta for a bout where he would test her newly acquired skills. As absurd as it sounds, the burly former wrestler, indeed fights his own daughter with all his might. He loses and with it, the years of conditioning of women and male domination are thrown out of the window.

This is the point where director Nitesh Tiwari had to decide the hero of the film: Will Mahavir curb his instincts and become an even more fierce coach, or will he let Geeta explore the horizon? He picks the first.

Chapter 1: Mission Impossible

Mahavir has four daughters after some years. (YouTube)

It is the early 1980s and wrestlers are treated as local heroes. This is yet not the time for gym-toned bodies and common folks like to believe that wrestlers are physically superior to them. On top of that, Mahavir Singh Phogat is a former national champion. Now a government servant, Phogat, who wears a gold ring and a silver-plated watch, has a volatile temper and wants a son to carry his legacy forward.

Listen: Aamir Khan’s Dangal jukebox

Such sentiments have already taken Haryana to the wrong side of the gender equality debate by the beginning of the ’90s. His apologetic wife (Sakshi Tanwar) shows how you start liking your oppressor because there is nowhere else to go. Not so directly, though. Tanwar’s comic timing tries to deflect the focus from her life to the little girls who are forced to fight the local chauvinists because their father has decided to transform them into world-class wrestlers.

Chapter 2: Pride And Prejudice

Geeta’s gait and walk show her confidence. Remember it’s still early ‘90s. (YouTube)

Mahavir is doing it because he has a dream to fulfil, but the girls have taken up wrestling because they are tired of cringe-worthy men and unrepentant boys. No wonder, they get their first boy-versus-girl fight because the organisers believed, “Agar apne pehalwano ko sher se bhi lada dega toh itne log nahi aayenge,” (You won’t sell these many tickets even if your boys fight a lion).

Watch: Our FB Live discussion on Aamir Khan’s Dangal

Geeta’s face, stride and attitude scream of retribution. She is there to break bones and the proverbial glass ceiling. And she doesn’t need to wear a classy gown for that. She wears lycra beneath her loose shirt and shorts that leaves only her palms and feet exposed. It’s in stark contrast to the boys’ outfits: nothing but a loin cloth. Still somebody in the crowd blows an obscene whistle. She must win the fight at any cost.

Chapter 3: Resurrection

People cheer the winners. They celebrate your success when you are on a high. Some don’t. And you meet them again when you return to your roots. In the rise and fall, what keeps a champion aloof from his surroundings is the survival instinct and the motive. Geeta and her national champion sister Babita (Suhani Bhatnagar, Sanya Malhotra) know they have got into wrestling with a mission. Win is the only way forward.

Chapter 4: Respect

You hear a roar before witnessing the frothy sea, a metaphor for Geeta and Babita’s quest to be at the crest of wrestling. Daler Mehndi belts out the Dangal title song right here and you feel a similar goosebumps moment that you felt in Rang De Basanti, Lagaan and Chak De India.

Dangal is probably Aamir Khan’s best performance till date. (YouTube)

But nothing can be so perfect, so a villain has to be devised. It’s a fictional account, but a good story is never complete without a strong antagonist. If it was the society in the first half, the wrestling federation takes it over in the second. It gets a bit preachy. But it doesn’t matter: Mahavir and his girls have already won the bout.

This could be Aamir’s best performance till date. Yes, even better than Lagaan. A man making his daughters chase his dream. He cries, frowns, gets angry, looks old and tired, but is definitely one of us. When he shakes his head helplessly, you see a father in him. When he gets into a brawl, he is the brother you always depended on. When he wants to see you win, you know you have to perform. It’s not just his pride, it’s yours as well.

Film Review: ‘Dangal’

A Bollywood girl-power drama about a father-coach turning his daughters into star wrestlers is too much of a formula thing.

Dangal

Aamir Khan , the star of “ Dangal ,” is as formidable and celebrated a movie star as India has going. Two years ago, he played the lead character in “PK,” a sci-fi comedy about an alien who visits earth and points out everything wrong with it; the film went on to become the top-grossing movie in Bollywood history. Fifteen years ago, Khan starred in “Lagaan,” the transporting colonial cricket-match musical that was the last Indian film to be nominated for an Academy Award. In “Dangal” (the title means “Wrestling”), Khan has aged nicely. He keeps his short muscular body poised, and his cropped hair sets off jutting ears, plunging eyebrows, and a serene scowl that almost never leaves his face; he looks like a jock version of Salman Rushdie. Yet within that tight-lipped mask, he finds a hundred ways to communicate emotion.

Related Stories

Is netflix about to turn into a franchise factory, dc's green lantern series 'lanterns' picked up as hbo series for eight episodes.

That’s more than you can say for “Dangal,” a one-trick domestic sports drama that drags on for two hours and 40 minutes. “Lagaan,” which was close to four hours, earned every minute of its running time, but “Dangal” is just a thin inspirational tale stretched out well past the point that U.S. audiences will have much patience for it.

Popular on Variety

It’s based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler who lived for the proud dream of seeing his country take home athletic “gold.” (It sounds like he’s talking about the Olympics, but he means any international competition.) Due to a lack of government sports funding, Mahavir wasn’t able to go for the gold himself (he became an office worker). So he took his two eldest daughters, Geeta and Babita, and turned them into competitive wrestlers, cutting against the grain of what Indian society wanted and expected girls to be.

In “Dangal,” is Mahavir a domineering stage father, using his kids to live out his failed dreams? No doubt. That’s why he prays to have sons. But when God blesses him with daughters, he transfers his obsession with molding a champion right onto them; as a coach, he’s both a domineering egotist and a de facto feminist. If the movie has a theme, it’s that Mahavir is a patriarchal thinker forced, by circumstance, to move into the 21st century. He’s a lot like India itself.

That means, among other things, that he’s going to treat his daughters with no mercy. When they’re teenagers, he subjects them to a grueling training regimen (worst restriction: no spicy food), and the defining moment comes when he cuts off their hair. It’s a lot like a Marine cut; as the two see it, they’ve been shorn (tearfully) of their identities, which their father will now rebuild from the ground up. There is — or could have been — a resonance to all of this. But Nitesh Tiwari, the director of “Dangal,” works strictly on the surface. The movie isn’t a musical, but it’s got a lot of those tabla-meets-EDM Bollywood dance tracks, and when one of them is laid over a training montage, the effect is less Bollywood than cookie-cutter Hollywood. It’s the equivalent of watching an American movie with the same story starring Greg Kinnear as the dad/coach and Dove Cameron and Lizzy Greene as the daughters, only with the cliché training sequence set to “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” “Dangal” is that kind of movie.

When the girls get older, the film switches actresses (the two younger ones, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar, are big-eyed urchins who barely register), and Fatima Sana Shaikh, who takes over the role of Geeta, emerges as Khan’s co-star. She has a gentle, dimpled face, but with her hair cropped she resembles a competitively coiled Kate Winslet, and there’s something touching in her devotion. Geeta is so fierce, yet is so carrying out the will of her father (which becomes her will), that she’s a revolutionary and a bowing disciple at the same time. The movie is way too vague about the essential facts of female wrestling in India. In the first half, it implies that Geeta and her sister are breaking the mold — that they’re heading into boys’ terrain, to the point that they have no choice but to wrestle boys. By the time they land at the National Sports Academy, where the coach becomes a rival to Mahavir, they’re suddenly part of a whole team of young-women wrestlers. When did that happen? You think: Good for India, but it renders the film’s journey more conventional than it had implied.

“Dangal” culminates in a championship bout at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and Tiwari stages it well. Geeta has to face down an Australian wrestler with a raw-boned look to kill, and as much as any boxing drama, the movie makes you feel the human ferocity in both of them. To raise the stakes, Mahavir isn’t even there; a foe has literally locked him in an office. Geeta, to be true to her father’s dream, must do it on her own. There’s hardly a moment in “Dangal” that doesn’t go according to the numbers, but after 160 minutes’ worth of formula, the movie certainly hits a note of touching tribute to the way girl power is sweeping the world.

dangal movie review in hindi

By Ben Kenigsberg

  • Dec. 22, 2016

Let it never be said that if you’ve seen one inspirational sports movie, you’ve seen them all.

Sure, Nitesh Tiwari’s Bollywood crowd-pleaser “Dangal” follows a formula: Father abandons his dream of being an international wrestling champion. Father hopes for a son who will live out his dream for him. Father ends up with four daughters.

Father discovers that two of his daughters are dexterous brawlers. Father declares, “From now on, they will only wrestle.” Father trains those daughters, in defiance of the villagers’ tut-tutting and assumptions about women’s roles, to mud wrestle, and instills in them a spirit of feminism.

Wherever “Dangal” goes — a highlight reel might include the older daughter rising from mud wrestling to pro, getting a new coach and beating up her jealous father, who later trains her by couriered video after being barred from the sports academy — it goes there in the maximalist Bollywood style, with emotions set to full blast and its heart firmly on its sleeve.

Based on the true story of Geeta and Babita Phogat (played as children by Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar and as adults by Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra), who eventually competed in the Olympics, and their trainer-father, Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan), the movie benefits from the amount of time it devotes to wrestling strategy. It pays off in suspenseful bouts that haven’t been hyperedited into incoherence, with actresses who really appear to be grappling.

Because this is Bollywood, the training montages are accompanied by sprightly pop music, though not as choreographed song-and-dance numbers. And as goosed as the drama gets (only sports historians can say if Mahavir became trapped in a janitorial closet during the 2010 Commonwealth Games), the uplift feels earned, or at least tough to resist.

Dangal Not rated. In Hindi, with English subtitles. Running time: 2 hours 41 minutes.

Positive Messages

Everyone has to fight for herself. Before you fight, you have to conquer your fear. Don't tell a tiger to fight like an elephant. Girls should do their best and try their hardest in order to help change the minds of those who believe that girls are inferior to boys.

Positive Role Models

Phogat was a wrestler when young; when his wife bears only daughters, he trains them to compete in women's wrestling at the highest level, despite their reluctance, embarrassment. Geeta and Babita come to see the value in all that their father has taught them. A jealous coach tries to eliminate the father's influence on the girls. The younger sister who admires her older sibling has wisdom to share as the elder rebels.

Violence & Scariness

Women wrestling matches features throws, twists, grips, and holds. Physical training for such matches is taxing. Someone is locked in a closet. The girls fight at school when bullied, giving the father the idea to train them to be wrestlers. A very tall and muscular wrestler challenges a smaller man to wrestle. The tall man loses. Geeta and her father wrestle fiercely.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Dangal , in Hindi with English subtitles, is based on the true story of two girls from a small Indian village whose strict father insisted on training them with the goal of winning gold medals in international women's wrestling. This stirring movie, about striving for excellence and rejecting received wisdom of so-called experts, follows the girls as they unwillingly bend to their father's iron will and endure 5 a.m. workouts and humiliating haircuts. They come to appreciate how much the father's high standards and training methods reflect his respect for women. This is set in stark contrast to the fates many Indian women are relegated to: wife at 14, child-bearer, cook. Older kids, and especially girls, may be surprised to watch a movie that seems to be about an unfair dad that turns into a celebration of the strength and talents of women and girls. What's the Story?

DANGAL, which means "wrestling" in Hindi, is the passion of Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan), a talented amateur wrestler who never won gold for his country but longs to train his sons to fulfill his dream. When his wife bears daughter after daughter, he adjusts his plan, forcing his preteen girls Geeta (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) to train like professional athletes. He cuts their hair off and drags them to compete against boys, humiliating them. The town disapproves, but Phogat bends to no one, imposing 5 a.m. trainings and workouts with a nephew to toughen the girls up. It's not until the girls skip training to attend a wedding that their eyes are opened to the fate of most Indian village girls. The miserable bride expresses her envy over their father's attention. She points out that girls are considered burdens until they're married off at 14, when a husband they've never met before takes charge of them, gets them pregnant, and relegates them to childcare and kitchen duty for the rest of their lives. Babita and Geeta train with enthusiasm from that point on, winning so many bouts that first Geeta and then Babita both earn spots on the coveted national women's team, which boards and trains them far from home and their father's wise and watchful eye. A vain and incompetent coach tries to erase their father's training, substituting an emphasis on technique that results in losses. As the girls learn to trust their father and appreciate his respect for them, they reject the coach, revel in their own passion for wrestling, and bring pride to themselves and their country.

Is It Any Good?

At times, this is an utterly thrilling sports movie featuring some of the most compelling fictional sports competition scenes in recent memory. Director-writer Nitesh Tiwari creates an unmistakable arc for each character that defies cliché even as Dangal does in some ways adhere to well-worn story conventions. A tough father/coach imposes his will on young, lazy beginners who want to avoid both feeling different from all the other girls and the grueling training imposed on them. But the movie transcends these banalities, partly through the use of well-placed songs with lyrics specific to wrestling and training ("Wrestle, O Wrestler!"), and also through a refusal to make excuses for the father and his harsh ways, even when he finally tells the girls he's proud of them.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about what it takes to be a good parent. Should parents teach children not to care what others think? How can that be a good thing? How can that be a bad thing?

The girls were humiliated when their father forced them to cut their hair in Dangal . Why do you think after growing it out in rebellion, Geeta cuts it short again? Does she realize that being different can be something to be proud of? Does she do it to acknowledge all that her father had been right about?

Do you think the athletic training the girls received will make them stronger people? What are some of the drawbacks of being treated by their father that way?

Dangal is not a perfect film, but then few films are. Its overlong at 2 hours and 41 minutes, and its both simple and simplistic in places. But its a solid and satisfying watch, a well crafted look at what went into the creation of two sporting champions. Its a film that makes the heart swell€¦when it isnt pounding from all the excitement of the bouts. Im going with four out of five.

On the whole, DANGAL is a masterpiece. A terrific film that stays in your heart and remains etched in your memory much after the screening has concluded. A brilliant film that restores your faith in Hindi cinema. Actually, it wont be erroneous to state that DANGAL is the finest film to come out of the Hindi film industry in a long, long time and mark my words, it will be remembered as a classic in times to come. It blends drama, emotions, sportsmanship and patriotism extraordinarily€¦ the icing on the cake being Aamir Khans towering act. This rich-in-merits film has a major advantage too — the holidays ahead [Christmas and New Year] — which will ensure a glorious run at the ticket counters. A must, must watch!

On the whole, Dangal is not just a movie; it is an experience to be cherished. It is extremely engaging, brilliantly entertaining and phenomenally patriotic in its feel. It is as much a film for the young as for the old, as much for the classes as for the masses, as much for the city audience as for the viewers in small towns and villages, as much for the rich as for the poor, as much for the multiplex audience as for the single-screen cinema audience, as much for the men as for the women. It has special appeal for the ladies and it has terrific repeat value. To say that it will prove to be a blockbuster is to state the obvious. The film is destined to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema. In fact, it can turn out to be THE BIGGEST BLOCKBUSTER EVER!

Director Nitesh Tiwari hits the familiar notes of the sports film in which the underdog becomes a champion. But Dangal works because it is about so much more €” this is a film about an authoritarian but loving father and his determined daughters. Its about the immense personal sacrifices and rigour that sport demands €” for these girls, long hair, nail polish and even pani puri were luxuries.

This is by far the most credible an Indian sport film has ever felt, with even the commentators getting in on the action, giving most of us a tutorial in how to watch the sport.Dangal teaches us where rainbows lie in wrestling, and while it is a celebration of true greats — and true grit — this isn’t about one sport. India needs to watch this film for the way it puts the ‘her’ in ‘hero.’

Visit  Site  For More Ratings: 4.5/5   Review By: Meena Iyer  Site:Times Of India

n the story department, Dangal offers few surprises because Geeta and Babita’s historic wins at the Commonwealth Games and following championships are common knowledge. However, this screen adaptation serves as a recap of their arduous journey and it vigorously recaptures their stubborn father’s resolve to make them professional wrestlers against the odds. Since it encapsulates the historic wins of the Phogats, who brought India glory, the film is also bound to inspire more women to seriously consider kushti as a sport.

A Bollywood sports biopic that gets nearly all its moves absolutely right, Dangal draws its strength from a blindingly luminous lead performance from a shape-shifting Aamir Khan. Dangal is the story of a Haryana man who dared to do the unthinkable. It is just as much the tale of a pugnacious girl who went where nobody from her tradition-bound village had ever gone. Dangal is the kind of sports film that usually eludes Bollywood. It knows the rules inside and out and meticulously plays by them without ever succumbing to dreary predictability. Dangal is an outright winner – a film that will pin you down and keep you in its grip all the way through.

But this is clearly Aamirs film. It wouldnt have been made if he hadnt green-lit it, and he brings to it the sincerity of purpose which makes it not just a starry vehicle, but a film which is about something, which has meaning, with a message which doesnt overwhelm the telling. It could have easily turned into a vanity project, which is a clear and present danger. It could have been made more polished that it needed. But it stays real, because the star ratchets it up when required, and lets it go in the rest..

Visit  Site  For More Ratings: 4/5   Review By: Suknaya Verma   Site:Rediff

Sport is at its centre but the essence of Dangal lies in the simple highs and lows of the people Tiwari chronicles.Unlike the overblown Sultan with a somewhat similar milieu, Tiwari’s account of inspiring reality is lot more understated in its approach. Two of its most poignant scenes are its quietest too — when Geeta weeps bitterly in the middle of heartbreaking haircut and Phogat’s crushed look as he takes off in a rickshaw immediately after entrusting his daughter’s fate to a snarky new coach (Girish Kulkarni).

Visit  Site  For More Ratings: 4/5   Review By: Rohit  Site:Hindustan Times

This could be Aamirs best performance till date. Its not just his pride, its yours as well.

Aamir Khans Dangal has its heart in the right place. An incredible script and powerhouse performances leave you impressed. Must-watch! Dangal is a rightly done sports drama inspired from a real story. Also sends out a strong feminist message.Dangal is inspiring, emotional and spellbinding. It is a Dhakad film and a perfect end for 2016! A 4/5 for this.

“We are all very proud that Indian cinema is getting recognized this year, especially starting in Cannes,” says director Abhilash Sharma, who won best director in the Asian New Talent competition for his second feature In the Name of Fire .

Sharma’s In the Name of Fire is set in the rural east Indian state of Bihar and focuses on a struggling mother and child and how their religion impacts their existence. Satya Ranjan won Asian New Talent’s best actor prize for his role as a beleaguered father in the film. “India has a lot of states and a lot of languages, and we have so many remarkable films to share. Global support is something that is incredible for us,” Sharma said.

Manohara K.’s Bird of a Different Feather is also part of the Asian New Talents lineup, with actor Jayashri winning best actress. Manohara K. says it is a story that mixes his own childhood of abject poverty with that of the film’s writer Sonia S., whose own albinism has presented lifelong struggles for acceptance. It’s set in rural Karnataka, the same southwest India location featured in Chidananda S. Naik’s short Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know , which won this year’s La Cinef section at Cannes, that category that encourages new talents and recognizing films from film schools worldwide.

Both Sharma and Manohara talk about the difficulties faced in finding distribution and how festivals such as SIFF play an important role in helping independent filmmakers gain international attention and, hopefully, distribution.

The plenty of reasons for the two directors to dream big. Last year’s Asian New Talents line-up produced two box office hits in China, with the Hong Kong-produced dramas In Broad Daylight and Time Still Turns the Pages getting wide release in China following SIFF

All the attention on India in Shanghai has raised talk once again about the long-touted possibilities of India-China co-productions, a box office dream team considering that combined the two film markets account for an audience of around 2.8 billion people, or over one third of the planet’s population. There’s been much noise generated in the past about and a film co-production treaty was launched in 2014. But only a few projects have ever been fully realized, among them the Jackie Chan-starrer Kung Fu Yoga (2017).

Shanghai-based Prasad Shetty, producer and distributor and a partner at Strategic Alliance, which promotes Indian films in China, was part of the team that helped bring the Aamir Khan-starring wrestling-centered Dangal to China back in 2017. He watched on as that film collected more than $200 million at China’s box office. This year, Shetty has been involved in bringing to Shanghai the Kiran Rao-directed marriage mix-up comedy drama Lost Ladies , which is screening as part of India Film Week, and from his vantage point on the ground in China he sees opportunity — with a caveat.
