Introducing Time4MathFacts

Practice Math Skills with Ad-Free Online Games!

Time4MathFacts uses the power of technology and engaging gameplay to motivate students to move from learning math facts to math fact mastery. What students experience as they play games to practice math facts is an immersive world of fun characters, rewards for improving their recall, and confidence-building feedback showing them their progress.

What students don’t see can be just as powerful–the behind-the-scenes technology that:

  • Adapts to individual students by tracking which facts they know and which they haven’t mastered yet.
  • Monitors each child’s progress in order to provide the right math facts practice at the right time.
  • Factors in a child’s typing speed to accurately measure their response time in games.
  • Provides reports to parents/teachers on each child’s efforts, so they know where to offer additional reinforcement.

Time4MathFacts is part of the Time4Learning family of educational products that service the PreK-12th grade community.

How Time4MathFacts Builds Math Fact Fluency

The goal for every child is achieving math fact fluency –the ability to recall the basic facts in all four operations accurately, quickly, and effortlessly.

Many online math facts practice tools are simply animated versions of flashcards. Students quickly get bored of this repetition-and-drill style of practice. The Time4MathFacts approach, on the other hand, engages math students from the moment they sit down to play.

New users will be immediately drawn into the Time4MathFacts world as they:

  • Create a personalized avatar
  • Participate in fast-paced games to determine their prior fact knowledge
  • Get introduced to new fact families, based on their initial game score assessment
  • Earn reward tokens for fact mastery that can be used to purchase virtual items for their avatar
  • See their progress, fact family by fact family, on the “Family Pyramid”

In just 15 to 20 minutes of use, a few times a week, students move from math fact acquisition toward math fact fluency .

Ninja to the Stars

The mystery of a ninja’s powers rest in their stealth and speed. In this exciting game, the ninja jumps from falling platform to falling platform climbing higher and higher in the star-filled sky. Not only can the ninja get a boost from answering math facts correctly, but by gathering bonus items and avoiding obstacles like meteorites along the way.

Ninja to the Stars lets students practice the facts they have learned during their coaching sessions with Crabby the Crab. Playing will help solidify their knowledge and increase their recall speed. Students can see their progress by viewing the Fact Family Pyramid.

Kirie

No one likes a poacher, so when wild animals are in trouble, it’s natural to want to help them out. In Kirie, students can choose the scene where they want to play. Once inside the virtual world of their choice, they will use their power of math fact mastery to collect keys that will release the animals from their captivity.

The green light at the top right corner of the screen tells the student they have met their daily usage requirement. Continued green light usage earns students tokens they can use to purchase clothes or accessories for their customizable avatar or even decorate their Progress Tree.

egyptian coniption

Egyptian Conniption

Egyptians believed cats were magical and able to bring good luck to those that took care of them. So, when it’s time to ward off encroaching foes, your student’s magically fast math fact retrieval will aid the cat’s efforts. Level by level, it’s the correct math facts that power kitty’s glaring eyes and fast tail to smite a variety of dangerous critters.

Egyptian Conniption motivates players to try to beat the hourglass and complete all six levels. Facts that appear in the game are customized specifically to the student’s current math fact learning level to optimize practice.

Swamp Chomper

Swamp Chomper

Bugs are an irresistible delicacy for the bog-dwelling frog in Swamp Chomper. In this fast-paced game the frog needs to eat as many bugs as possible before its lily pad sinks. Students can help the frog with its task by quickly answering math fact questions.

This game requires quick decision-making, so as their math fact fluency grows, so does their score. And to keep the level of challenge right for students, facts are sequenced based on their individual fact retrieval time and response patterns.

Welcome to fastermathfacts.org, choose a level:, (timer info), (your name), today's date..., overall score....

Work online to improve speed and accuracy in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Print scores at the end of each session to track progress and review missed problems. Work at a variety of levels, either in Practice mode or Timer mode.

The ability to instantly recall math facts enables students to learn more advanced math with greater ease. For example, the word problem "how many ounces of milk are in six 8-ounce glasses?" can be solved quickly by a student who recalls the math fact 6 x 8 = 48. The same problem can be time-consuming and frustrating for a student who does not yet know that math fact. Practice improves speed, speed improves success, and success boosts confidence and enthusiasm for math!

Practice mode provides prompt feedback by identifying each correct and incorrect answer immediately. The Timer mode provides results AFTER each 1 minute timed test.

The Scores option lists scores for a student's current session and provides details on any missed problems. Students can print the information by clicking on the printer icon at the top of the 'Scores' page. (Some browsers such as Google Chrome also have an option to save results to a PDF file.)

Feedback from students, teachers and parents is welcome. Please send suggestions for improvement and/or details about any problems you encounter to [email protected] . Questions are also welcome!

Developer contributions and suggestions for improvement are welcome. This project is posted on Github.

Time is valuable, so practice fluency wisely

Not too easy, nor too hard. Just right. We aim for 90-95% fluency in practice to keep in the zone of proximal development. We track facts correct, not minutes spent on a screen. Students will never see a wrong answer. Mastery is based on 9 out of the last 10 tries both correct and fast enough. Cut-off speeds are customized because students’ response speeds vary. We know which facts each student needs to focus on for maximum growth, and we use spaced repetition to move them to automaticity.

Fluency to Practice Efficiency Ratio

A study of over 1,400 users showed a direct correlation between practice on Math Facts Pro and fluency. Students who practiced less than 50 facts/week averaged a gain of 2.2 newly fluent facts/week, while those who practiced 250 facts/week (a five minute, 50 fact session for each of 5 days) gained 10.5 newly fluent facts/week, almost 5x as much! It isn’t just practice that gets you to Carnegie Hall, it’s effective practice.

More Fun = More Practice = More Fluency

Math facts assessment and practice can be tedious, so we make it more fun with joke videos. (Carefully screened by us.) After a daily assessment/practice session, students who are logged in can play our first highly focused video game, Mars Defense ( create a free trial now ), because more practice = greater fluency, and more motivation = more practice (and less complaining - smile). Being able to concentrate and beat a game while answering math facts without thinking about them is also a great way to practice for following along with a teacher’s higher level math instruction without having to think about the fact answers. More games to follow.

Favorite Joke: (# 72) There were three monsters, called Manners, Mind-Your-Own-Business, and Trouble. They had the day off from the circus, so they went on a holiday. All of the sudden, Trouble disappeared! Being good friends of his, Manners and Mind-Your-Own-Business decided to report Trouble missing at the police station. When they got there, Manners was pretty scared, so he stayed outside. Mind-Your-Own-Business went inside to tell the police what was going on. The desk sergeant asked him his name, and he said, “Mind-Your-Own-Business.” The desk sergeant said crossly, “Where’s your manners?” “Outside.” On hearing such rudeness, the desk sergeant said, “Are you looking for trouble?” Mind-Your-Own-Business said, “Yes, Please!”
