Ph.D. Graduate Program in Psychological Sciences and Human Development

Introduction.

The Graduate Field of Psychological Sciences and Human Development (PSYHD)  includes faculty members from departments across the university including Psychology, Neurobiology and Behavior, Communication, and Philosophy.  See below for more on the Cornell Field System. The dominant strengths of the PSYHD Field lie in four broadly defined areas: Cognition , Development ,  Neuroscience , and Social and Personality . The goal of the Field is to educate students to become researchers, scholars, and teachers who will contribute to the future of psychology as a scientific discipline in academic or other research-oriented settings.

Our program prepares students for research and teaching careers in academic life, work in government agencies, and careers in industry or other public and private sectors.  We encourage you to explore the history of our M.A. and Ph.D. theses through the  Cornell University Theses/Dissertations guide .

Please note that we do not offer training in clinical psychology, counseling, school psychology, community psychology, industrial psychology, or clinical neuropsychology.  Applicants with primary interests in these subjects are not admitted.

To enter the PSYHD Doctoral (Ph.D.) program, you must  apply directly  to the Cornell University Graduate School. You may also want to investigate the  Cornell Graduate School  site for additional information about applying.

Application portal opens on September 1   Application portal closes on December 1 (11:59 pm)

Ph.D. Program

We offer three Ph.D. Degrees:

•Ph.D. in Psychology  •Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology  •Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies

The Ph.D. Graduate Student Handbook (Quick Guide) can be found here.

The Ph.D. program in PSYHD is a research focused, apprentice-styled (mentor-mentee) graduate program.  The curriculum and requirements are designed for a 5 year program; the median time to complete the Ph.D. is 5.5 years.

Student progress is supervised by a Primary Advisor who serves as the Chair of a Special Committee comprised of two faculty members, typically within the Psychological Sciences and Human Development graduate field . Prospective students should investigate the faculty members within the PSYHD field, and particularly within the Department of Psychology, whose research interests are compatible with the students' interests.  Prospective students for the Ph.D. program should then contact those faculty directly before applying.

The Field Structure

At Cornell, graduate study is organized using a field structure.   Fields are composed of faculty members from a number of departments who come together around a shared intellectual interest, and may draw from different campuses or colleges.  Graduate students are admitted to fields of study.  Within each field, they select major and minor subjects, which are research interests or concentrations.

Fields span departments and even disciplines.  It’s possible for a student in the field of economics to include faculty on his or her special committee from industrial labor and economics, civil and environmental engineering, and sociology, along with the more traditional economics and management.

Program Structure

The Ph.D. degree is an intensive research program designed to prepare students for esteemed careers in academia and industry. Students typically complete their PhD in eight Semesters and four Summer Sessions.

The below requirements listed below represent general university-level expectations. The specific details of specific degree requirements can be found on each discipline page.

Some degree programs may require an assessment entrance exam as the basis for admission, and students may be required to complete additional coursework. If the master's degree is from a subject other than the Ph.D. degree program, there may also be additional courses required and specified by the advisor.

  • Two or more courses at the 300 level
  • Graduate seminar if required by the program

A full-time workload for Ph.D. students is twelve credit hours per semester (courses and 397) and six credit hours in summer (397 only).

Besides coursework (six or more credit hours), dissertation research (397) must be earned during the first (proposal preparation and defense) and second phases of the Ph.D. program.

The dissertation defense is the final exam of the Ph.D. degree. It involves a public presentation of the results of the dissertation research followed by a question-and-answer session.

The dissertation and defense committee consists of four members of which at least three must be KAUST faculty members and one an external examiner.

The result of the defense will be made based on the recommendation of the committee. There are four possible results:

  • Pass : the student passes the exam, and the dissertation is accepted as submitted.
  • Pass with revisions : the student passes the exam, and the student is advised of the revisions that must be made to the text of the dissertation.
  • Failure with retake : normally this means the student must do more research to complete the dissertation. The student must revise the dissertation and give another oral examination within six months from the date of the first defense.
  • Failure : the student does not pass the exam, the dissertation is not accepted, the degree is not awarded, and the student is dismissed from the University.

Winter Enrichment Program

Hosted annually in January, the Winter Enrichment Program (WEP) is an academic, entrepreneurial, and cultural interlude session in KAUST's academic calendar whose primary purpose is to enrich and inspire students beyond their normal academic curriculum.

Students are required to satisfactorily complete at least one full Winter Enrichment Program.

Degree requirements and pathway to degree for the PhD in US History

Degree requirements and pathway to degree for the PhD in British or European History

Minor Fields

Each student must complete one minor field that falls outside the scope of the major field. Students will choose a minor field in consultation with their major professor. Approval of the selection and scope of the field will be made by the student’s major professor and minor field professors. A minor field requires nine hours of coursework. Minor fields cannot fall within the same major field. Requirements for fulfilling the minor field will be determined by the student’s minor field professor.

For students concentrating in US history, the minor fields must fall outside the geographic parameters of the US.

Students may elect to take a minor field outside of the department, but only with the permission of their major professor. Requirements for an outside field are determined by the outside department.

In consultation with History Department faculty, students will choose and create a minor field. Examples of minor fields include: Women’s and Gender history; Political Theory; Intellectual History; Britain; Medieval Europe; Political Science; Archival Studies, World History .

A minimum of 54 semester hours of coursework and dissertation research are necessary to complete the program, but the plan of coursework depends on the student’s earlier preparation in history. Each student must choose two fields of study: one major field and one minor field.

General Examinations

All PhD students will complete general examinations. Once a student has completed all of their coursework (including major and minor fields, and foreign language when required), the student will take the general examination the following semester. General examinations are offered once each semester, in November and April. Once a student has completed all of their coursework (including major and minor fields), the student will take the general examination the following semester.

The major field exam will consist of two day long written exams and an oral examination with the student’s committee (which must include at least two members of the graduate faculty) and a representative from the Graduate School.

Minor field exams may consist of a written exam; in certain cases, a minor field may consist only of course work and a written exam will not be given.

Once the general examination has been successfully completed, the student becomes a PhD Candidate.

Dissertation and defense

All PhD students will research and write an original piece of scholarship based on primary source research. The dissertation must “embody creative scholarship” and “must add to the sum of existing knowledge and give evidence of considerable literary skill.”  After completing the dissertation, the candidate defends it in an oral examination.  The examining committee consists of the student’s major professor, and at least two other graduate faculty from the Department of History or other departments in the University, and a representative from the Graduate School, in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the LSU Graduate School Bulletin.

Foreign Language Requirement

PhD students in British History must demonstrate reading proficiency in one foreign language. PhD students in European History must demonstrate reading proficiency in two foreign languages (for medieval history one of those languages should be Latin).

PhD students in U.S. history are not required to have proficiency in a foreign language. However, US PhD students are encouraged to pursue additional coursework in foreign languages or demonstrate proficiency in skills relevant to their individual research topics. Examples include but are not limited to Geographic Information Systems, Statistics, and Art History. A student’s dissertation director will determine when this requirement has been met.

Best PhD institution with great professors

For masters, I chose Universiteit Gent, Belgium because I had a strong motivation to work for the development of rural areas in India. This University offers one of the best rural development programs in the world. After completing my master's degree, I worked through different national and international development research organizations in India. That helped me to acquire some advanced skills in research and motivated me to pursue Ph.D. if I want to make my career in research. One day, I found a vacancy offered by Universität Kassel, Germany for a doctoral researcher on the effect of urbanization on the peri-urban area of Bengaluru city. This position attracted my attention to apply and by god's grace, they selected me for this position.

During my master's, it was 8000 euros per year. For Ph.D. its 300 euros per semester.

university of kassel phd programs

The interaction between light and matter, quantum dynamics and control, nanostructures, laboratory astrophysics, magnetic layers and surface physics are the main research topics at the Institute of Physics at the University of Kassel. In our Master' Program in Physics, you will have the opportunity to work with internationally renowned scientists on highly topical issues in basic and applied research. A special research area dealing with "Extreme Light for the Analysis and Control of Molecular Chirality" (ELCH) gives you the chance to use the most advanced tools in experimental and theoretical atomic and molecular physics, as well as in optics and quantum optics (AMO) in the gas phase to control and manipulate chirality at the single molecule level. In laboratory astrophysics, you can use precision spectroscopy to study exotic molecules and clusters that otherwise only exist in interstellar space and compare your laboratory readings with astronomical observations to detect previously unidentified molecules. In technical physics, for example, you analyze semiconductor nanostructures and nanophotonic components for optical communication and quantum information processing and optimize them using semiconductor quantum dots. At the Centre for Interdisciplinary Nanostructure Science and Technology (CINSaT), you can work on interdisciplinary research issues from the nanostructure sciences at the interface between physics, chemistry, biology and the engineering sciences. These and other research topics in the University of Kassel's Master of Physics Program will prepare you for a scientific career and research-related work in future industrial projects. We offer you fascinating experiments in our own laboratory and elaborate modelling in theoretical physics, both of them in a multinational research team environment with an intensive exchange of ideas - ideal conditions for a subsequent doctorate or entry into the profession. As a precondition, you should have completed a bachelor's degree in physics and want to work in research. Then the Institute of Physics is the right place for you.
