Does she do her homework?
She does her homework. Does she do her homework?

Why the questioning sentence is using "do"?

CowperKettle's user avatar

2 Answers 2

To ask a question, we need to use an auxiliary verb at the beginning of the sentence. In our case, the auxiliary verb is do : this is called do-support .

But since "she" is a singular third-person pronoun, we turn do into does . The first do carries the third-person ending s (or es ) instead of the second. So there's no reason to leave the second verb with the same ending.

She flew home. ("Flew" is the Past Tense form of "fly") Did she fly home?

Notice how the auxiliary verb do assumed the Past Tense form did , and the main verb fly now has no need to be in the Past Tense form: the auxiliary verb does this work.

The main verb contains the meaning, the auxiliary verb is a "helping verb".

In your example sentence, the first do (in the form does ) is an auxiliary verb , and the second do (in the form do ) is a main verb .

  • 1 Very nicely did (American regionalism) –  TimR Commented Nov 30, 2014 at 18:42

The usual situation

When turning a statement into a question, we move the first word of the verb to the beginning of the sentence:

Statement: She is doing her homework. Question: Is she doing her homework?

An exception

If there is only one word in the verb, we use a form of to do to add a word to the verb, then move the added do :

Statement: She does her homework. Two-word verb: She does do her homework. Question: Does she do her homework?
Statement: She has a question. Two-word verb: She does have a question. Question: Does she have a question?

An exception to the exception

If the verb is a one-word form of to be , we can't use to do to add a word. All we can do is move the verb that exists.

Statement: She is a student . Mistake: She does is a student. Question: Is she a student?

Grammar: When to Use Do, Does, and Did

Grammar: When to Use Do, Does, and Did

3-minute read

  • 12th August 2022

Verbs are essential to creating complete sentences, as they help us express physical actions ( She jumped in the puddle) , mental actions ( He thought about puppies) , and states of being ( I am hungry) .

There are several types of verbs that can each be written in different tenses, so they can be tricky to work with, especially if English isn’t your first language . We’ve put together a guide to help you use one of the most common verbs, do , in your writing . Read on below to learn more!

Action Verbs

As the name suggests, action verbs are used to express actions completed by the subject of a sentence. The base verb do is conjugated according to the tense:

1. Present Tense

In the present tense, do takes the form do or does, depending on the subject:

Subject:Verb:
I/you/we/theyDo
He/she/itDoes

Consider the following examples:

We do our homework every night.

She does her homework every night.

2. Past Tense

In the simple past tense , the base verb do takes the form did with all subjects:

Subject:Verb:
I/you/we/theyDid
He/she/itDid

We did our homework last night.

She did her homework last night.

Auxiliary Verbs

Auxiliary , or helping verbs, are used with another base verb to create negative sentences, questions, or add emphasis. Here’s how do should be used as an auxiliary verb:

1. Negative Sentences

Following the same subject–verb pairings introduced above, we combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the adverb not to create negative sentences:

We do not do our homework every night.

She did not do her homework last night.

Note that we can combine the auxiliary and the adverb to create the contractions don’t , doesn’t , and didn’t . You simply remove the space between the two words and replace the letter o in not with an apostrophe (’).

Find this useful?

Subscribe to our newsletter and get writing tips from our editors straight to your inbox.

Contractions are more common in conversations and informal writing and typically shouldn’t be used in formal writing (e.g., academic or business).

2. Questions

To create questions, the auxiliary is combined with the infinitive of another verb in this way: auxiliary verb + subject + infinitive verb .

●  Simple present questions:

Do they sell children’s books?

Does he speak English?

Note that the third person verb speaks isn’t spelled with the s when paired with the auxiliary to form a question.

●  Simple past questions:

Did you buy anything at the bookstore?

Did he learn how to speak English?

Note that did indicates the past tense, so the main verbs don’t also take the past tense (i.e., bought and learned ).

3. Emphasis

In positive sentences, we can also combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the main verb to emphasize that something is true:

   We do sell children’s books.

He did learn to speak English.

Try saying these sentences aloud and adding emphasis to the auxiliary terms with your tone. It adds a dramatic effect!

Difficulties in understanding a conditional probability question from a textbook

In the book " Complete Probability & Statistics 1 for Cambridge International AS & A Level " I found the following question:

The homework diaries and completed homework of two Students A and B, are examined. There is a probability of 0.4 that Student A does not make a note in her diary homework set. She always does the homework if it is written in her diary, but never does the homework if it is not written in. There is a probability of 0.8 that Student B writes the homework given in her diary. When she does this, she will do the homework 90% of the time. If she has nothing written in her diary then she checks with a friend, who knows what the homework is 50% of the time; Student B always does the homework if she is told what it is by her friend. A) Find the probability that Stundent B does her homework on a particular night. B) Find the probability that both students do her homework on a particular night. C) If one piece of homework was given to a student but wasn’t done, find the probability that it was given to Student A.

For A) I got $0.8\cdot 0.9+0.2\cdot 0.5=0.82$ .

For B) I got $0.82\cdot 0.6=0.492.$

For C) I got: The probability that the homework is not done by both or one student is $1-0.492=0.508$ . Therefore we find that $\frac{0.4}{0.508}\approx 0.7874$

But consulting this forum I found that the solution is apparently $\frac{0.382}{0.382+0.108}=0.752$

I do not understand why this is correct. For me, 0.752 is the solution to the question: If homework of both was checked and one was not done, find the probability that it was Student A's.

Can somebody tell me if I am missing something?

  • $\begingroup$ But 0.382 and 0.108 only consider the cases where A has done the homework and B not and B has done the homework and A not. Why do they not consider the case where both did not do the homework? $\endgroup$ –  garondal Commented Aug 4, 2022 at 15:44
The homework diaries and completed homework of two Students A and B, are examined. There is a probability of 0.4 that Student A does not make a note in her diary homework set. She always does the homework if it is written in her diary, but never does the homework if it is not written in. There is a probability of 0.8 that Student B writes the homework given in her diary. I got: The probability that the homework is not done by both or one student is $1-0.492=0.508$ . Therefore we find that $\frac{0.4}{0.508}\approx 0.7874.$

Firstly, you are interpreting "one student" as "at least one student", whereas the author probably means "exactly one student".

Secondly, you aren't taking into account the given condition that one piece of homework wasn't done.

Now, P(A did but not B) $= [0.6 \times (0.8\times0.1+0.2\times0.5)]=0.108,$

while P(B did but not A) $= [(1-0.6) \times (1-(0.8\times0.1+0.2\times0.5))]=0.328.$

The required probability is P(B did but not A) $\div$ [P(A did but not B) + P(B did but not A)], which equals $$\frac{0.328}{0.328+0.108}=0.752.$$

But consulting this forum I found that the solution is apparently $\frac{0.382}{0.382+0.108}=0.752.$ I do not understand why this is correct. For me, 0.752 is the solution to the question: If homework of both was checked and one was not done, find the probability that it was Student A's.

Exactly! But, to be exact, "exactly one was not done". -)

By the way, your transcribed answer from that forum contains two identical typos.

Who Is Glenn Howerton's Wife? All About Jill Latiano

Glenn Howerton and his wife, actress Jill Latiano, married in 2009

Contributor, PEOPLE

Amanda Edwards/Getty

If there’s one thing Glenn Howerton is known for, it’s giving it his all — as an actor, father and husband to actress Jill Latiano.

Fans of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia know of Howerton as Dennis Reynolds, the co-owner of Paddy’s Pub. Still, he’s taken on several other characters throughout his career, including recurring roles on The Cleveland Show and The Mindy Project .

Despite his long list of accomplishments, Howerton has shared that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has a special place in his heart. Not only was he an executive producer, director and writer for the show, but in 2009, he and Latiano worked together during an episode on season 5.

So who is Glenn Howerton’s wife? Here’s everything to know about Jill Latiano and her relationship with the fellow actor.

Latiano began her career as a dancer

Gilbert Flores/Variety via Getty

While Latiano is known for her acting skills, she began her career as a dancer for the New York Knicks in 1999.

Latiano originally danced competitively — long before joining the Knicks. In 2022, Latiano posted a throwback photo compilation on Instagram celebrating International Dance Day.

The slideshow began with a black-and-white snapshot of a young Latiano in ballet flats and ended with a group shot of three happy tweens (including Taryn Manning ) posing with a trophy in hand.

She made her acting debut on an episode of Sex and the City

In 2004, Latiano made her acting debut as “Party Girl #2” on the “Let There Be Light” episode of HBO’s Sex and the City .

Since then, she’s guest starred in various television shows, including Rescue Me , CSI: NY and Drake & Josh. She also made appearances in Epic Movie and Lower Learning .

Howerton and Latiano married in 2009

Glenn Howerton/Instagram

Howerton and Latiano have been inseparable since 2007 . The couple wed on Sept. 8, 2009, in Rancho Las Lomas, Southern California. The theme of the wedding was “Lucky in Love.”

“Glenn and I are always telling each other how lucky we feel to have found each other ... so that is sort of how it [the theme] came about,” Latiano told Green Wedding Shoes .

She continued, “It was carried throughout the wedding from the cupcakes, to the backdrop of the photo booth, to the table names which were all things pertaining to good fortune and/or luck.”

She played Howerton’s love interest in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

In episode 10 ("The D.E.N.N.I.S. System") of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia ’s fifth season, Latiano played Howerton’s love interest, Caylee.

In 2016, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia dedicated its eighth episode of season 12 to her father, Bob Latiano, who died that year.

She’s a mom of two

On Sept. 12, 2011, the couple welcomed their first child, Miles Robert. Howerton announced the news during an appearance on Conan , where he admitted that the baby’s name was a last-minute decision.

“My wife and I thought it would be a good idea to wait to see the baby first before we actually decided what his name would be ... get a sense of the guy,” he said. “Then we saw him and he looked like a tiny little baby alien grandpa creature and I was like, ‘I’m not getting any information from this — at all.' "

In 2014, Howerton and Latiano surprised the public with the birth of their second son, Isley Ray — named after the Isley Brothers.

“We just had another kid. We really didn’t announce it ,” Howerton told PEOPLE.

“It’s off the grid!” Latiano quipped.

She’s an activist

Latiano uses social media as a platform for change. She often posts on Instagram encouraging people to vote and donate to various causes. In 2013, Latiano produced the documentary film GMO OMG .

Throughout the project, director and filmmaker Jeremy Seifert travels across the globe to uncover the truth behind GMOs and how they affect our health and the planet.

“My personal wish is that our film awakens the masses to the truth about their food and inspires them to demand transparency from the corporations that are feeding us and that control the future of agriculture,” Latiano said in an interview with The Chalkboard Mag .

She added, “We as a society need to demand that agriculture systems be put in place in our country that are sustainable as well as beneficial to our environment and our people.”

She and Howerton are best friends

Activism isn’t the only thing Latiano uses her social media channels for — she often shares posts of appreciation for her husband, and he does the same for her.

“My advice? Marry your best friend,” Howerton captioned an Instagram post in 2020. “Bonus points if your best friend happens to be a stone-cold babe. Happy 11th Anniversary to this incredible lady @jill_howerton. I can’t imagine being more in love with another human being.”
