Today's modern interiors have roots in modernism and 20th-century midcentury modern architecture and design. They borrow from the past to create spaces that feel current and livable.

This may include white walls, light hardwood flooring, minimal window treatments to maximize natural light, and simple furniture with clean lines and neutral colors. But a modern interior can also be full of color, pattern, and texture depending on your taste.

Contemporary

Maite Granda

Contemporary homes refer to those that date from the late 20th century to the present day. A contemporary interior may feature clean lines and neutral palettes or bold color and decor.

You can bring a contemporary aesthetic to a new build or an old house with contemporary furniture, art or wall decor, and features like large windows left bare or outfitted with simple window treatments to let in natural light. Sustainable design is a hallmark of contemporary interiors.

Midcentury Modern

Erin Williamson Design

Midcentury modern is a 20th-century design style that is equal parts stylish and functional. Largely defined by a less-is-more philosophy, the most popular elements of midcentury modern design feature clean lines, wood finishes, an emphasis on maximizing natural light, and a connection to the outdoors.

Midcentury modern furniture has become a staple in modern interiors that mixes well with other styles from industrial to bohemian design.

Becca Interiors

Minimalist design is an influential 20th-century visual style with an established history in the realms of architecture, interiors, art, graphics, fashion, and virtually every other facet of design.

A minimalist room has functional furniture, an optimized layout, built-in storage, clean lines, and a lack of superfluous decoration or ornamentation. Minimalist interior design is often monochromatic or uses a limited color palette, focusing on the use of varied textures and quality materials to create a warm and livable feel.

Modern Farmhouse

Michelle Berwick Design

Modern farmhouse is a persistent trend fueled by a nostalgia for an idealized simpler past that aims to make modern spaces feel cozy and livable. Modern farmhouse interiors include signature elements like warm wood finishes and furniture, industrial lighting fixtures, abundant windows to bring in natural light, and a neutral palette that may include white walls or wood paneling such as shiplap , beadboard, or board and batten.

Kate Marker Interiors

Whereas modern farmhouse finishes tend to be light, bright, and new, farmhouse style favors darker palettes and weathered materials like aged wood, original brick, exposed stone, and tile flooring. Features like wooden farm tables, fireplaces, and vintage lighting figure prominently in farmhouse interiors.

An eclectic interior combines styles and periods to create rule-breaking rooms that are personal and full of visual interest. Feel free to mix and match patterns, colors, forms, and finishes. Blend old and new furniture and decor for a layered feel. Decorate with global elements and unexpected pieces that tell a story only you can tell.

Japandi is a modern style that mixes Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics for a minimalist zen feel with a warm organic touch. Combine pale woods, sculptural furniture, soft textiles, and natural textiles to create a tranquil Japandi oasis that will make your home feel like a haven from the chaos of the world.

Industrial-style interiors were originally inspired by the aesthetics of converted urban warehouse lofts that began in the 1960s. But this minimalist, neutral style has become a fixture everywhere from modern apartments to historic renovations and new-build suburban homes.

While some industrial-style interiors still feature raw materials like concrete and metal, rough finishes like original brick walls , and details like exposed ductwork, industrial style is constantly evolving. Today industrial elements are often mixed with other styles such as midcentury modern and farmhouse to create hybrid rooms.

Industrial Farmhouse

Design by Chango & Co. / Photo by Sarah Elliott

Industrial farmhouse is a popular hybrid decorating style that blends industrial and farmhouse home decor trends. A mix of hard and soft, old and new, and cold and warm finishes, textures, furniture, and decor, industrial farmhouse interiors are casual, comfortable spaces that are on-trend but timeless.

They may feature modern farmhouse elements like white walls and light woods or incorporate darker tones and textured finishes such as aged metal and reclaimed wood that lean more heavily into farmhouse and industrial aesthetics.

Coastal style is a light and breezy modern aesthetic that is based around the escapist fantasy of living on the beach. Coastal interiors tend to focus on a limited palette of soft colors reminiscent of sand and sea, such as whites, grays, blues, and sandy tones.

Natural materials like weathered wood and rattan, light fabrics like linen and cotton, plenty of natural light, and an airy and uncluttered feel give coastal interiors timeless and crowd-pleasing appeal that works anywhere.

Rustic style is cozy, unpretentious, and warm. The opposite of a modern or contemporary aesthetic, rustic interiors include natural materials and aged, well-worn finishes that give it a lived-in feel.

A rustic-style space may include wood-paneled walls, wood-burning fireplaces, and vintage or antique furniture and finishes such as distressed painted wood dressers, trunks, or tables and aged copper or other metal fixtures. Log cabins are quintessentially rustic.

Traditional

Traditional interior design is based largely on 18th- and 19th-century European styles and conventional Western notions of what a home looks like. The furniture, textiles, color palettes, and decor used in traditionally designed rooms reference history and are familiar rather than trend-setting. Elements such as four-poster beds, wooden chests of drawers, upholstered furniture, and landscape paintings are some examples of traditional decor.

Transitional

Whittney Parkinson Design

Transitional interior design style mixes traditional and modern design elements to create a neutral, understated look that can work in both traditional or modern homes. Mixing furniture styles and periods is a hallmark of transitional style , which blends old and new in a low-contrast way, often uniting traditional forms with modern upholstery and using soft neutral color palettes for a unified look.

Modern Cottage Style

Modern cottage style is a cozy, welcoming, and nostalgic style trend that mixes traditional and farmhouse elements but gives them a slightly more romantic feel. Modern cottage aesthetics are largely inspired by English cottage style that mixes vintage and antique furniture, decor, and lighting with neutrals and soft pastel colors and floral or botanical patterns but with an often more clean-lined spin that suits current tastes and lifestyles.

French Country

Marie Flanigan Interiors

French country interior design style is inspired by the charm of the French countryside. Equal parts rustic and chic, it incorporates neutral or soft earth-toned colors, natural materials such as wood, and a reverence for the simple beauty of everyday objects.

French country interiors mix rustic features such as exposed brick or stone, classic fireplaces, wooden ceiling beams , textured wall finishes, and hardwood or tile flooring with elegant furniture and decor and vintage or antique elements for an authentic and timeless feel.

Hollywood Regency

Forbes + Masters

Hollywood Regency Style (or Regency Moderne, or Hollywood Glam) is an American design style that was born in Hollywood, CA, during the Golden Age of cinema in the 20th century. This glamorous and maximalist style is characterized by elements such as gilded accents, bold jewel-tone colors, black-and-white checkerboard flooring, leopard prints, mirrored furniture, and sparkly chandeliers.

Coastal Farmhouse

Coastal farmhouse interiors mix two popular styles to create a homey and breezy mix. Blend coastal elements such as blue and white tones, weathered wood, and seascape paintings with farmhouse furniture and decor like shiplap wall paneling, rustic furniture, and leather and woven materials to give your interior a relaxed and livable feel.

Modern Organic

Modern organic interiors blend clean lines with natural shapes to create warm and inviting spaces. A modern organic room includes a juxtaposition between manmade and natural materials and finishes. It may include white walls, hardwood flooring, sculptural lighting and decor elements, and wood furniture with curved forms or live edge wood mixed with neutral textiles.

Scandinavian

Fantastic Frank

Scandinavian interior design style is inspired the streamlined aesthetics of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. It focuses on neutral palettes, clean lines, wood furniture and finishes, and cozy touches. Today, Scandi style is often mixed with other interior design styles such as Moroccan and Bohemian, and has become one of the most popular interior design styles in many countries around the world.

Maximalist design is the opposite of minimalist design, embracing a more-is-more approach that includes a mix of colors, patterns, textures, and design styles. A maximalist room may feature an abundance of decor objects, layered textiles, and furniture and decor from various periods and aesthetics.

Create a maximalist interior that is vibrant and livable rather than chaotic and cluttered with creative displays such as a gallery wall of art or a modern-day curio cabinet to house a collection.

Bohemian Design

K Shan Design

Bohemian style has evolved into a modern day trend that describes a freespirited and lighthearted approach to home decor. Today's boho-style interiors may be light, neutral, and decorated with plants, woven wall hangings, and wicker furniture. Or they can be colorful and dramatic, full of mixed patterns, global accents, and eccentric touches.

Mix and match styles and combine old and new elements to create a casual and inviting ambiance at home.

Mediterranean

Mediterranean-style interior design is a minimalist-chic approach to decorating inspired by the aesthetics of the countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, notably Italy, Spain, and Greece. Emphasizing its connection to the outdoors, Mediterranean interiors favor natural materials and finishes, arched architectural features, and nature-inspired colors with white and black accents.

Sculptural decor objects and natural greenery such as potted olive trees complement a Mediterranean decor scheme.

Soufiane Aissouni

Moroccan interior design style is inspired by the traditional aesthetics and culture of Morocco. Convivial spaces that are built for gathering with friends and family, Moroccan design is known for its vivid color, bold patterns, and sculptural hand-crafted decor made from natural materials. Objects such as Berber rugs, leather poufs, perforated metal pendant lighting, and handira wedding blankets have become signature elements of modern interiors everywhere.

Moroccan decor elements mix well with midcentury modern, industrial, Scandinavian, and other popular styles.

Art Deco is a polished 20th-century style that emerged in the 1920s and has had a renaissance in homes and boutique hotels in recent years. Art Deco style is characterized by a use of geometric shapes, stylized curves, atmospheric lighting, and luxe materials like marble and velvet. Bold colors such as red, yellow, green, blue, and pink, as well as metallic finishes like chrome and brass figure frequently in Art Deco interiors.

Shabby Chic

Shabby chic is a 1980s trend that mixes influences from French Country to vintage, cottage, and Scandinavian to create a homey style full of comfy furniture, weathered finishes, and romantic accents. This can mean anything from overstuffed couches to wrought iron chandeliers, mixed florals, and skirted furniture or bed frames.

Today's shabby chic interiors tend to be more streamlined than the rooms of the 1980s, with simple window treatments and less embellishment to give them a timeless feel.

Retro interior design style is a modern riff on the signature looks of times past. Unlike vintage style , which represents decor and furniture that is between roughly 20 and 100 years old, retro style channels trends from various eras to create derivative modern interiors that pay homage to the past.

A retro interior may include a kitchen finished with vintage-style tile countertops or retro-style appliances that are fresh off the assembly line but look like they could have been there since the 1950s.

How to Create a Winning Interior Design Presentation

We see them every day. Beautifully sketched interiors artistically finished off with watercolors, stunning 3D renders that immerse you into an interior designer’s vision for a space. Instagram is overflowing with rows of striking interior design plans to scroll through, while animated walkthroughs in TV makeovers hint at the big reveal that’s yet to come. Impressive as they are, being able to create such stunning visuals is not as hard as you might think. Yes, it takes practice and effort to master these skills, but the benefits are more than worth it. Our team over in Dubai have put together a great guide to help you master interior design presentation skills. You’re welcome!

Interior Design Presentation Techniques & Skills

interior design styles presentation

As an interior designer, creating a stunning presentation can be the difference between you winning a job or it going to someone else. But you might ask yourself “Isn’t it all about the end-result and not impressive artistic skills?” In any design field, first impressions count for everything. In lieu of a physical representation of your ideas, you’ll need strong visual presentation skills to convince your client or interviewer that you’re the right person for the job. This guide can help those already out there pitching for work as well as those of you who are just starting out. Applying these tips to your portfolio, as well as to client presentations will help you to stand out from the crowd from the off.

There are heaps of advantages to having strong visual presentation skills.  These tips will stand you in good stead throughout your career working in interior design. Good visual communication skills help designers sell their ideas to clients more easily, clearly and professionally. They ensure that designers and clients are on the same page and seeing the same thing. They also speed up designers’ work and simplify making changes as needed. In addition, they make

interior design styles presentation

With all these benefits, it’s no wonder that designers are flocking to add these tools to their skillset. There are a wide variety of visual communication and presentation techniques for interior designers. Here, we’ve chosen three key skills and tools to use for the concept development and planning stages of the interior design process.

Stage 1 – Sketch for Initial Concept

Sketching for Interior Design Presentation

So you’ve just signed on a new client! You’ve met with them, taken some photos and dimensions of the living room they want designed, and if needed, you have your survey plan ready. You’ve already discussed conceptual options, what trends and colours they prefer, and gone over examples of designs they like. Your client is now waiting for an initial concept from you. What do you do?

You’re excited to start working on your design, but it’s important to first ask yourself: what level of detail in the design is required at this stage? Your focus here should be on communicating a general direction for the plan, and using that to initiate feedback and more detailed discussions.

Room Planning Process

One of the best ways for you to quickly express an initial idea is to use the age-old reliable technique of hand drawing. A hand-drawn sketch will take you minutes to do. Not all interior design presentations have to be perfect. It’s allowed to look a little messy, and proportions and accuracy don’t need to be spot on. The bare bones are there to build on, but it hasn’t fully taken an exact shape yet.

At this point, you will have a rough idea of your floor-plan, and the amount and type of furniture that fits the space, but haven’t yet defined the exact items and their measurements. The loose style of the sketch reflects the fluidity of the design at this early stage.

The three types of sketches you can use are:

  • Floor-plans to give an idea of space distribution, zones and traffic flow
  • Perspective drawings to show specific zones
  • Elevations to show specific walls and furniture in that view.

This handy blog will teach you the basics of room planning.

What sophisticated tools will you need for this? Mainly, the humble pencil… as well as an eraser, good quality art paper, a pen to finish off the sketch with. And if you want to add colour at this stage, then either colouring pencils, watercolours, or pastels.  You can also go the digital route and use tablets or smart phones with sketching features that make it really easy to add colour and make changes.

As a designer, you’re not required to show off exceptional artistry, but it is recommended that you develop good skills in sketching and perspective drawing. The better you sketch, the clearer you’re able to communicate your ideas. This creates a more professional impression as well as a more impactful interior design presentation that you can share with your client.

If you’re lucky, your client will approve the idea right away. But if you find that your design direction is off-track, then it’s back to the drawing-board for a revised concept. If your client agrees with your concept but wants minor changes, you can either send a revised sketch, or the same draft can be signed off, with notes added on the amendments.

Stage 2 – Line Drawings for Layouts & Materials

interior design styles presentation

Now’s it’s time to fine-tune! The basic concept you’ve presented needs to become more accurate, and your measurements need double-checking. You’re also starting to identify specific options for furniture and get their measurements.

Creating accurate floor-plans at this stage will give you a clear idea whether you’re overloading your space with pieces or still have plenty of room left. Along with these, you’ll also create detailed elevations showing the different heights and openings. All of this will help determine the nature of your shopping list.

interior design styles presentation

What should be your tool of choice? AutoCAD , naturally! This software has been the industry standard to draft floorplans and elevations for decades, and for good reason. Using AutoCAD will ensure that your interior design presentations look slick, professional and jump off the page.

With AutoCAD, it will take you just a few hours to create your drawings. You can also draw your furniture items as per exact dimensions, or easily add them from the program’s furniture library. This will ensure that all the furniture you’ll order or custom-make will fit in its designated areas, and help you make quick calculations for quantities of materials needed for all types of wall and floor finishes.

In our imaginary scenario, your AutoCAD 2D plans are now done and shared with the client. They reply informing you that after thinking about it, they’ll need to add a reading corner, and they’re not a big fan of the L-shaped sofa. No problem! Because you have a digital file that can be easily edited. It takes minutes to make the changes and send the revised drawings, which get approved this time around. Imagine this using hand-drawn sketches which need to be done from scratch each time a change in made?

To use AutoCAD, you’ll need to subscribe to a software license and install the software on your computer. AutoCAD is free for students studying with the NDA. All you have to do is download the software and upload proof of your student ID or confirmation letter. Find out more here on the Autodesk website.

There are plenty of video tutorials on the dedicated AutoCAD website as well as on YouTube. Or you could sign up for a short online course with a provider like Udemy to master these skills quicker.

Stage 3 – 3D Models to Illustrate Zones, Furniture & Accessories

interior design styles presentation

You’re now progressing fast with the design development. This is one of the best bits of putting together an interior design presentation for a client. You get to go shopping for everything from flooring, paint, wallpaper and fabrics, curtains, cushions, and furniture pieces all on someone else’s budget!

Because there are many decisions that will be based on this stage, your client will now want a clear idea of the exact finishes you’ve chosen and how they go together. It’s critical that you present this stage with confidence and clarity.

interior design styles presentation

What’s the best way to show all these different finishes and styling choices? You’ll need to make sure that you create a realistic feeling of the layout and different zones as well as represent your colour, texture and furniture choices with accuracy and to the best of your ability. This is the big one!

SketchUp Pro is the most popular and easiest way to achieve a professional presentation which shows your scheme in its best light. This 3D modeling software not only helps clients visualize the finished design, but it’s also invaluable to help designers audit their concepts before final decisions are made.

You can create a 3D model for the project by inputting your AutoCAD drawings and incorporating all of your selections. When you see your scheme in 3D, say you find that the walls look too dark and the flooring doesn’t quite work. SketchUp will enable you to mockup different ideas and test different materials so that you can either present the choices to your client or work out which fits before presenting.

But now that your client has a clearer idea of what the space will feel like, they ask if it’s possible to add a custom-made piece of furniture as a semi partition. So it’s back to SketchUp again, where you easily calculate the space you have and digitally design a bookcase to fit. Easy peasy!

interior design styles presentation

As with AutoCAD, you’ll need to subscribe to SketchUp Pro and download the software on your computer. There is a web-only version that’s free, but it’s not recommended if you want to use the program for interior design projects as it’s just too limited in functionality. Again, students at the NDA get a special deal on SketchUp Studio which includes SketchUp Pro, LayOut and StleBuilder. CadSoft Solutions currently have a student offer for £46.80 for an annual subscription . Tutorials are easily found on the website and YouTube , or again you can sign up for a short course.

Stage 4 – Animated Walkthrough for Final Sign-off

So what’s next? You’ve done all of your plans; your interior design presentation is complete, and your client has made all the changes they want. Surely now you just need to make the concepts into reality? Wrong. Changing things past this point will cause serious issues for you and your suppliers so it’s best to make sure that your client is 100% happy and can visualize the entire scheme and how they will live in the space.

Using SketchUp again, you can create a few simulation scenes to help your client visualize each zone as well as the full space. When you finally meet with your client with the full and final presentation, they will be able to walk through each room or area and fully immerse themselves in the room of their dreams. There’s nothing quite like that level of realism to prove that you’re a pro at this game! It’ll be at this stage the you get the green light and can finally move things from dream to reality.

Because you’ve invested in learning practical skills and helpful tools, you’ve saved lots of time, presented your vision clearly, and left little room for miscommunication.

Interior Design Presentations: The Secret to Winning More Clients

As an interior designer, creating interior design presentations that communicate just how you’ll realize a prospective client’s vision will help you land and ultimately manage projects so you can do more of what you love.

Interior design presentation blush

It’s often said that a picture tells a thousand words, which is certainly true with interior design presentations.  When your clients see your vision for their project, they’re sure to get excited, and together you’ll be able to finetune the final design.

What Should an Interior Design Presentation Include?

  • 3D floor plans. Include the location and size of doors, windows, and built-ins to help clients understand a space's size, layout, and traffic patterns.
  • Furniture plan. Help clients visualize each piece's size, shape, color, and texture in combination with the rest of the décor.
  • Material samples . Invite clients to explore the wood, metal, glass, fabrics, stone, and/or other materials you plan to use.
  • Color scheme. Your understanding of color theory, the psychology of color, and your client’s wishes will help you select the perfect palette.
  • Renderings. High-resolution floor plans and 3D visuals show texture, materials, and details like interior lighting, sunlight, and shadows.
  • Budget. Regardless of a project’s scope or size, determining its budget should be at the top of your to-do list. Break it down by room and provide less-expensive alternatives to big-ticket requests.
  • Project schedule. Giving your clients realistic timelines for each phase of the design will go a long way to managing their expectations.

Types of Interior Design Presentations

There are numerous ways to share your design vision with prospective clients, including the following:

Mood Boards

A mood board helps communicate your vision through a collage of images, textures, color palettes, typography, description words, and floor plans. They should represent the look, feel, and emotion you want to achieve, so not every image or sample has to be related to interior design. Pictures of nature, for example, might work.

You can create a physical mood board with a simple foam board and samples inviting clients to see, touch and feel the materials you recommend. Another option is to use graphic design software like the RoomSketcher App to make a digital mood board that can easily be shared with your client and others.

Interior design mood board presentation

Hand-drawn sketches were once the cornerstone of interior design presentations, but many fear they’re becoming a lost art. Yes, they’re being replaced by 3D renderings, but they can still be helpful in communicating a project’s general direction and formulating ideas while you experiment with various options and proportions.

You may even carry a notebook and pencil with you so you can do a quick sketch when inspiration strikes. Because poorly-drawn sketches might confuse rather than inspire prospective clients, many interior designers rely on them as part of their development process. Still, they don’t necessarily share them with clients past an initial meeting.

3D Renderings

With photorealistic 3D rendering presentations, you can take your clients on a virtual tour around their future space and bring fine details of the project to life by zooming in on a specific section of the rendering. You can offer more than one vision and develop ideas in collaboration with clients in real time, allowing you to make better design decisions more quickly and ensuring you’re both satisfied with the final design.

Top Tip With a RoomSketcher Pro subscription, you can generate sophisticated 3D interior design presentations – quickly, easily, and affordably.

Many clients can select finishes and items they like but struggle to visualize them in a space. That’s why so many interior designers agree that 3D renderings are the most powerful of all interior design presentation tools. Here are some reasons why:

  • Better visualization. 2D floor plans simply can’t rival 3D renderings, which give you a realistic overview of the space and design elements. The fully-immersive experience even allows clients to appreciate how the space makes them feel, which is ultimately the most important factor.
  • Convenience. Collaborating with prospective clients in real-time allows you to make better design decisions faster and goes a long way to developing a harmonious relationship, which will make the project more enjoyable and can also lead to referrals.
  • Meet client expectations. Design customers have come to expect 3D visualizations for their home design projects. Knowing the end result before the project even gets underway allows them to set realistic expectations.
  • Save time and money. Interior designers once had to rely on render specialists to create realistic renderings to share with prospective clients, but it’s easy to create 3D renderings with the RoomSketcher App, saving you both time and money.

Steps to Create a Professional Interior Design Presentation

There are lots of reasons why hiring an interior designer is worth it. Often, people need someone to identify a space’s potential and/or pain points and then provide creative solutions that are functional and pleasing to the eye. The following steps will help you create presentations that show clients just how you’ll do that:

1. Sketch your initial design concept

The first step to creating a dynamic interior design presentation is to sketch your initial design concepts for each area clients want to be revamped. Draw a basic layout of the space, make note of its dimensions, and add comments that will help guide the remainder of your design process.

How to Package Your Interior Design Concepts in a Presentation

How to Package Your Interior Design Concepts in a Presentation

Presentations are a common tool used in business, particularly sales, marketing and even public relations. But presentations can be a valuable asset for many unexpected industries, including interior design. Representing visual ideas in an interior design presentation can improve the chances of landing an important project. Not only can designers package their ideas and concepts in an engaging visual presentation, but digital interior design presentations also provide potential clients with an idea of what they can expect from a project.

How do you present interior design concepts in a way that closes the deal? After all, an interior designer needs to not only pitch their services but also introduce their ideas and showcase their portfolios. Fortunately, all of those factors can be clearly communicated in a visual presentation designed with PowerPoint-alternative software .

Presentations help designers pitch their services

Much like any other business professional, a designer can use a presentation to pitch their services to potential clients. Sales proposals help demonstrate how a business, product or service can positively influence clients, investors and potential partners. Successful sales proposals and pitch presentations feature straightforward messages, impactful visual elements and specific data that references a company’s strengths.

Designers can use sales proposal presentations to respond to requested proposals, communicate their proposed design concepts and pitch ideas and design strategies to potential clients. By using a sales proposal template , interior designers can benefit from a streamlined creation process. Instead of starting with a series of blank slides, a sales proposal template features perfectly curated slides that already feature all the essential placement and design elements that designers can fill with customized content.

Designers don’t have to stick to the slides included in a sales proposal template. They can also promote their services by customizing any number of pitch deck styles. By personalizing a pitch deck template, creative professionals can impress potential clients and close more deals. Beautiful.ai users can choose between a general pitch deck template or customize one of many PowerPoint makeovers of pitch decks used by some of the world’s most successful brands.

Presentations allow designers to introduce their ideas

How does an interior designer introduce their visual ideas to a client? Creative professionals commonly use mood boards to visually convey their ideas about a new project. These valuable tools, also known as inspiration boards, typically feature representations of color schemes, materials and textures, as well as furniture and décor. Because mood boards are easy to create using presentation software, designers can make multiple versions to offer clients flexibility.

An effective mood board presentation template allows designers to organize their ideas and keep their inspiration in a concise deck they can share with teams, partners and potential clients. Fortunately, creative professionals don’t have to know how to make an interior design presentation board from scratch. With Beautiful.ai’s customizable mood board template , interior designers have everything they need for an effective mood board presentation, including slides for everything from background information to colors to photography.

The mood board presentation template also helps creative professionals add various elements of inspiration to help inform new designs while creating a comprehensive guide to reference throughout the course of a new project. A mood board presentation even allows designers to brainstorm and share their ideas with other stakeholders.

Presentations help designers showcase their portfolios

As any creative professional can attest, a strong and engaging portfolio is a vital element of their success. Potential clients and prospective partners want to see designers’ skills and experiences with their own eyes. Gone are the days when visual artists and designers had to carry around physical portfolios filled with snapshots and visual examples of their work history. By creating a digital portfolio using presentation software, creative professionals can design a memorable visual resume to dazzle clients.

Creating a digital portfolio presentation can be simple for interior designers using PowerPoint-alternative software like Beautiful.ai. The creative portfolio template helps designers showcase their work and skills while highlighting their specific creative styles. The template includes slides perfectly curated to highlight past work and professional skills, as well as connect with potential clients.

By customizing the creative portfolio template, designers can impress potential clients and employers with a readable, eye-catching digital portfolio. Since first impressions are vital in the creative professions, the template helps create a digital portfolio presentation that shines a spotlight on a designer’s best work for the best possible impact.

How to create stunning interior design presentation boards

In the dynamic world of interior design, the ability to present a cohesive and visually appealing concept is essential. A well-crafted interior design presentation board can do just that.

An interior design presentation board (including elements like design schematics and mood boards) is more than just a collection of ideas — it’s a vital tool that effectively communicates your vision to your clients.

Want some ideas for creating more effective interior design boards?

In this 7-minute read, you’ll get professional tips for creating presentation boards that not only captivate but also clearly articulate your design intentions. From design schematics to mood boards to board layouts, you’ll get the insights you need to take your presentations to the next level.

Let’s start with a quick look at the basics.

What is a Design Schematic / Presentation Board?

Interior design presentation board example

An interior design schematic is a visual representation that outlines the key elements and overall concept of a design project. It serves as a roadmap to guide both the designer and the client through the project’s aesthetic, functional, and spatial decisions.

You might be wondering… What’s the difference between an interior design presentation board, a mood board, and a design schematic?

The Answer: It depends on the project and the designer.

  • Similarities: They all feature similar elements (color schemes, material and furnishing suggestions, etc.) and in many cases, designers use the terms interchangeably. All three take place during the Schematic Design phase of the project.
  • Mood boards tend to be more conceptual than design schematics and presentation boards. On large projects, you use mood boards earlier on in the Schematic Design phase. But for small and simple projects, a mood board could also serve as the final design schematic/presentation board.
  • For larger projects, you will likely present multiple mood boards before deciding on a final design style. Then, you present design boards/design schematics which include to-scale floor plans and 3D renderings of the space along with your final recommendations for color palettes, material choices, and furnishings.

Important: In this article, we’ll refer mostly to interior design presentation boards or design schematics. However, the tips also apply when preparing simple mood boards.

Why You Need a Design Schematic

A design schematic or interior design presentation board is a fundamental tool in interior design that outlines the aesthetic and functional vision of a project. It ensures all stakeholders have a clear, unified understanding of the project’s direction. This enables you and your clients to have effective communication and easier decision-making throughout the design process.

Key reasons to use a design schematic:

  • Clear Vision Communication: It bridges the gap between abstract ideas and tangible realities and helps to convey your vision to clients, contractors, and collaborators.
  • Efficient Planning: By outlining the project’s scope from the outset, a design schematic allows for efficient allocation of time, materials, and labor.
  • Issue Identification: Early visualization helps identify potential design or functionality issues. This lets you make adjustments before implementation and saves you time and money.
  • Cohesive Design: Ensures every element, from color schemes to furniture placement, works harmoniously towards the intended aesthetic.
  • Client Alignment: Facilitates approval from clients by minimizing misunderstandings and revisions thanks to a detailed preview of the proposed design.

How to Create an Interior Design Presentation Board

Check out these 5 steps to creating a board that conveys your vision and plan to your client.

1. Choose Digital Board vs Hard Board

In the digital age, the choice between a digital board and a hard board is pivotal. Each medium has its unique advantages and can significantly influence the presentation’s impact.

Digital Boards are versatile and easy to share. This makes them ideal for remote presentations or when working with clients across different locations.

They allow for quick edits and updates, ensuring that the presentation can evolve in real time based on client feedback.

Digital boards also let you include interactive elements, such as links to specific products or immersive 3D renderings .

Hard Boards , on the other hand, provide a tactile experience that digital boards cannot replicate.

They’re particularly effective in showcasing textures, colors, and materials since they let clients physically interact with the elements of the design.

Hard boards excel in face-to-face meetings, where the physical presence of the materials makes a stronger impact on the client and fosters an emotional connection with the design.

So which is better?

It depends on the nature of the project, the preferences of your client, and the context of the presentation. Many designers find value in combining both approaches — using digital boards for their flexibility and convenience, and hard boards for their tangible, persuasive power.

2. Choose Your Inspiration

Selecting the right inspiration is an important step in crafting an interior design presentation board that resonates with your vision and appeals to your client.

Here’s how to approach this critical step:

  • Explore Broadly: Begin with a wide-ranging exploration. Look at design magazines, online portfolios, and social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram. This broad approach helps you uncover diverse styles, trends, and innovative ideas.
  • Condense Your Ideas: After gathering a broad array of inspirations, start narrowing down your options. Focus on themes, colors, and elements that align with your client’s preferences and the project’s requirements.
  • Create a Mood Board: A mood board is an excellent tool for refining your inspiration. It allows you to compile your ideas into a cohesive visual narrative. This can include textures, colors, furniture styles, and architectural elements.
  • Client Collaboration: Involve your client in the inspiration process. This collaboration ensures the final board reflects their taste and expectations while fostering a stronger buy-in for the proposed design.

3. Lay Out the Room

layout - interior design presentation

The layout of the room is a critical component since it shows how space will be utilized and how different elements will interact within it.

Here are some tips for creating the layout:

  • Start with Measurements: Accurate dimensions are key. Ensure you have a detailed measurement of the space, including doorways, windows, and any structural elements that might influence the design.
  • Sketch Multiple Options : Don’t settle on the first layout you design. Sketch multiple configurations to explore various ways the space can be organized. This could include different furniture arrangements, traffic flow, and focal points.
  • Use Design Software : There are many design software options available that can help you visualize the room layout in 3D . This can be especially helpful for presenting your ideas to clients, as it gives them a more tangible understanding of the space.

PRO TIP! – Go with a powerful, yet easy-to-use design program like Cedreo . It makes it easy for you to create multiple layouts in a matter of minutes. Plus, even with no previous 3D design experience, you can create 3D floor plans and photorealistic 3D renderings that help take your design boards to the next level!

Incorporate Key Elements

  • Furniture Placement: Show how furniture will be arranged for both aesthetic appeal and functionality.
  • Lighting: Indicate sources of both natural and artificial light, and how they influence the ambiance of the room.
  • Flow: Ensure there’s a logical flow between different areas of the room (and between different rooms).

By carefully choosing your inspiration and thoughtfully laying out the room, you create a solid foundation for your interior design presentation board. Now it’s time to add the design elements.

4. Highlight Fabrics, Colors, and Materials

Choosing the right fabrics, colors, and materials is important for conveying the look and feel of your design.

Here’s how to highlight these elements effectively:

  • Fabric Swatches: Include samples of the fabrics you plan to use. This could be for upholstery, curtains or cushions. Real swatches attached to a hard board or high-quality images on a digital board let clients touch and feel the textures.
  • Color Palette: Use color swatches to visually communicate the color palette that aligns with the design’s mood and style.
  • Materials Board: Similar to fabric swatches, include samples or images of key materials like wood, metal, stone, tile or glass. This helps clients understand the quality and finish of the surfaces in their space.

Considerations for Selection:

  • Durability: Choose materials that not only look good but are also suited to the space’s function.
  • Sustainability: Whenever possible, opt for eco-friendly materials to improve sustainability.
  • Harmony: Ensure that all selected fabrics, colors, and materials complement each other to create a cohesive look.

5. Add Furniture & Decor

modern living room

Furniture and decor play a significant role in bringing your design board to life.

Some tips for adding these elements to your presentation board:

  • Furniture Selection: Carefully select furniture pieces that align with the room’s layout, style, and function. Include images or drawings of these pieces on your board to showcase how they contribute to the overall design.
  • Decorative Elements: Incorporate decor items such as art, rugs, and accessories. These elements add personality by making it feel curated and lived-in.
  • Annotation: Use brief annotations or labels to describe the significance of each piece. Include details about the material or its intended impact on the space.

PRO TIP! – Design programs like Cedreo make it easy to decorate a space . Cedreo even offers a 1-click decorating option. You select the style and Cedreo saves you loads of time by automatically adding decorations.

Considerations for Furniture and Decor:

  • Scale and Proportion: Ensure that furniture and decor are scaled appropriately for the space so they maintain balance and proportion.
  • Functionality: Choose pieces that not only look beautiful but also serve the functional needs of the space.
  • Personal Touch: Include items that reflect the client’s personality or have a special meaning to them. This makes the space uniquely theirs and creates a stronger emotional connection.

Your board is created… Now it’s time to present it. Keep going to the next section for tips on how to do that.

How to Present Your Design Board to Your Interior Design Clients

Presenting your design board effectively is as crucial as the board’s creation itself. It’s the moment where you communicate your ideas with the goal of getting the client on board with your design.

Here are some key strategies for a successful presentation:

  • Set the Scene: Begin with a brief overview of the project objectives and how your design meets these goals. This sets the context for the presentation and primes the client for what they are about to see.
  • Walk Through Methodically: Guide your client through the board in a logical order. Start with the layout and then move to the color scheme, materials, furniture, and finally…the decor. This step-by-step approach helps clients understand the rationale behind each decision.
  • Be Open to Feedback: Encourage questions and feedback. Remember, your presentation is a two-way conversation. Your openness to their input can lead to a final design that truly resonates with the client.
  • Visual and Verbal Narration: Use both visual elements on the board and your verbal explanation to tell the story of the design. Emphasize how each element contributes to the overall vision and functionality of the space.

Guide to 3 different types of Interior Design presentations 2D, 2.5D and 3D

*Monthly Installment Payments Available

Quick Guide to the 3 different types of Interior Design presentations 2D, 2.5D and 3D.

The difference between 2D, 2.5-D and 3-D presentation can be hard to navigate when you’re just starting out which is why I created this guide.

Once you understand it, you can begin to offer multiple tiers of products and develop speedy workflows within your business. The following guide can be used not only to explain the difference between presentation styles but also to give you examples of when, and when not, to use the different strategies.

To begin with, let’s talk about 2D Presentation .

interior design styles presentation

‍ – What is considered a 2D presentation? 2D is generally a flat a flattened image which has no depth or lighting and is generally drawn or painted onto a flat surface.

In the interior design industry, floor plans, elevations, swatches, textiles are excellent examples of 2D presentation, as well as, any type of text-based presentations.

– When to use 2D presentations?

In our business, we use 2D when we’re either doing something fast or when the 2d format is what’s expected by our clients as a delivery. We use it if depth, feeling, and emotion isn’t really part of the conversation and we are conveying factual information around measurements, color, materials, swatches, and textiles. When we’re trying to quickly establish an inexpensive idea that needs to be straightforward and accurate. The software we use to create 2d presentations are Hand rendering (ink and paper), Word (lists and schedules), Photoshop (color swatches), Revit (digital drawings),

What about 2.5D presentation ?

interior design styles presentation

– What is a 2.5D presentation?

2.5 d is an excellent transition between 2D and 3D. This is a presentation that is also fast, accurate and efficient but opens the viewer’s mind to help them visualize the perceived depth and overall vibe of a space. (Photographs, mood boards, design boards, paintings, perspective drawings.)

Its very effective in conveying emotion and introducing realism to a presentation. The reason we use the term 2.5 d does not have to do with the appearance, as 2.5 d many times is Photorealistic. We use this term to explain the process in which it was made as well as convey the limitations it has.

For instance, in 2.5D presentations, you cannot do a 360 camera rotation around a product or space. You cannot produce multiple views or angles of the same space (at least not in a timely manner). The view is usually locked and only intended to portray a single angle. This is an approach to presentation that offers designers and their clients a 3dimensional concept of space (realistic or otherwise) in a cost and time effective approach that can show quick variations.

– When to use 2.5D presentations?

We use 2.5D when we only need to present one or two angles of space. At the beginning of a project when we are trying to sell an idea via an abstract concept or even a highly detailed realistic single image. When it needs to be fast and may end up being something we need to throw in the garbage and offer a different look. This is where design boards come in. They can be created quickly they can show a client a realistic representation of their interior space inexpensively.

interior design styles presentation

– Where does 2.5 D presentation fall short?

In 2.5 d measurements, proportions and scale can take a back seat to the conceptual nature of this approach and can be easily be misinterpreted by the artist. This is because the tools are meant to be more artistic and again speed is the name of the game.

In a case where you need accurate measured distances Heights and widths and when you need to see multiple perspectives do walkthroughs and produce plans based on the model, this is when a 3D approach is appropriate

The detailed world of 3D presentation

interior design styles presentation

– What is a 3d interior presentation?

3D presentations produce some of the most realistic results and in-depth presentations available to us as interior designers. This is because 3D rendering software like Sketchup and Revit use systems and tools to measure real-world space which produces lifelike simulations of movement and lighting within a space. It’s by far the most accurate way to produce a realistic presentation. It’s also by far the most expensive, which is why its good to go through the concept phases (above) with a client before diving into 3d rendering.

– When to use 3D Interior Presentation?

Before we dive into 3d presentations we first go through the concept phase of 2D and 2.5D presentations. We want to get a very accurate idea of the space both in plan, or at-least measurements, as well as the client sign off on style and aesthetic before we even think about spending the time and money associated with a 3D presentation.

In some cases, such as when we are designing a single open space or room, we won’t even need to go into the world of 3D. However, on the flip side, when a space is dynamic and will require multiple views to be visualized, we will approach a project with our 3D workflow in mind for a final presentation.

– Limitations of 3D presentation

One of the drawbacks to using 3D is the fact that 3d modeling and texturing takes a ton of time. if you’re under a tight deadline you may be limited to using 3D libraries if you want to create quick room builds. if you have a lot of time on a project, you could model and texture all the specific products you want.

When we have projects where the clients require visualizing specific furniture from specific vendors we will almost always use Photoshop to present a space, that is unless its a huge space. On the flip side, if the job does not require specific looks of specific furniture and we can get away with using something from a 3d library that communicates the message conceptually, instead of literally, then 3D may be a better way to go.

When it comes down to it, the plan of attack you choose always comes down to the project at hand. Just because you used one approach for one project doesn’t mean you’ll want to use the same approach on the next one. The type of client, the budget, the time and the space all factor in on the call you’ll need to make.

If you have been researching how to design your home’s interior, you probably have come across different interior design styles such as “contemporary,” “modern”, “industrial”, “art deco”, and several others. Have you ever wondered what these terminologies actually mean?

For starters, these terms refer to different interior design styles, with each design having its unique characteristics, flavor, finish, and experience, and interior styles. While the interior design profession has existed for just over 100 years, the process of interior design, including the use of interior design software , has existed for as long as humans have been constructing homes and decorating them based on their needs and materials available to them.

We are going to talk about some top interior design styles that have managed to stand the test of time and are used by people even today.

Jump ahead to:

1. Modern Interior Design Style

Modern living room and kitchen interior design with blue accents.

From the onset, it is important to note that “modern” and “contemporary” are two different interior styles. A modern interior design style is defined by clean and simple color schemes, welcoming feel, clean individual elements, as well as heavy use of glass and steel and much-needed siding replacements that date back in historical times. Black and white dominate the color palette , with some faded shades of blue, red, among other prime colors.

We spoke about contemporary interior design style which blends the design styles from various eras, the Modern Design style is from a specific period – the dawn of the 20th century. This style is rooted in German and Scandinavian design styles and architecture. It is all about logic and practicality and the paintings and sculptures are chosen accordingly. The focus of the designer is on functionality and not on the form.

The living spaces are designed in a minimalist manner with open floor plans. It focuses on block colors and primary hues with modern art in contrasting colors. The furniture used is functional and simple with clean lines. Natural lights play an essential role in a modern home while accent lighting is used to highlight specific elements, architectural features, sculptures, etc.

To set a modern interior design style in your home, you can:

  • Modern home design uses neutral colors to elevate the sense of functionality. You can use black, white, grey, or beige colors on the walls and most of your furniture.
  • Consider using furniture pieces with toned-down colors in the upholstery but liven them up with bold colors on throw pillows. You can also choose bold geometric prints and patterns, maybe add some texture, and you got yourself a modern style.

2. Contemporary Interior Design Style

Contemporary living room with vaulted ceilings and a fireplace

Contemporary interior design is a type of interior design style which refers to trends that are ruling now- at this very moment. An interior design style that was “contemporary” in the 2010s is not necessarily contemporary now, but a design that was “modern” back then still remains to be “modern”- always was, always will! In other words, modern design doesn’t change with time, whereas contemporary is more fluid.

Contemporary homes usually have open floor plans and use a lot of natural light. The materials used are eco-friendly or recycled with a lot of focus on energy conservation. The colors used are usually neutral with a dash of vibrancy using a brightly-colored sofa or painting, etc. Most of the furniture used in a contemporary-styled home is from the present.

Lighting fixtures are chosen from various eras to accentuate the living space. Choose the right fixtures to create the best possible aesthetics using advanced floor plan creator like Foyr Neo.

To bring in a touch of contemporary design to your home, you can:

  • Cool shades and neutral colors such as white, grey, black, and beige can do wonders.
  • Use materials made of jute and textured wood, table and floor lamps with modern cut-out designs, and cabinetry with some craftsmanship for a varied feel.
  • Bring in furniture with curved edges and shining surfaces, be it stainless steel or wood.
  • Consider using multi-faceted furniture.

3. Art Moderne Interior Design Style

A modern living room with a large abstract painting, geometric wall decor, and a cowhide rug.

Art Moderne originated from the United States in the early 1930s and trended until the late 1940s. Those days, this interior design style was all about bigger, bolder, and brassier. Furniture was designed with a swelling curve and other décor items were either pared or stripped down. Designers also refer to this interior design style as the American Modern or Modernist.

4. Mid-Century Interior Design Style

Mid-century modern furniture arrangement with a teal armoire, dresser, and floor lamp.

The mid-century interior design style was popular in the wake of the Second World War. Just like was the trend with almost every aspect of life those days, this interior design style emphasized on vivid use of color; from the walls to the wall arts, to the artifacts. Everything was colorful in this era. Furniture was defined by crisp lines, and indoor plants were in plenty.

The center of focus of a living room is a painting or an artifact that resonates with the people living there. Clean lines, spare surfaces, and simplicity are some other striking features of the mid-century modern design style. Sculptures, graphical shapes, and highly saturated colors that are symbolic of the 50s and 60s find their way in this interior design style too.

The style leaves tons of shared, common areas all-around a house. Go for this interior design style if your focus is on strengthening interpersonal bonds- if you are a highly social person.

5. Minimalist Interior Design Style

Everything is streamlined, simple, and necessary. No excesses.

6. Scandinavian Interior Design Style

Bright and airy living room with a mix of patterns and textures

The Scandinavian interior design style is a combination of various design styles that evolved in the 20th century in the five Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. The Scandinavian style is about a minimalist interior, utility, and simplicity.

It also embodies simplistic yet highly functional spaces. It is also warm and leaves space for personal invitations. What makes it different from minimalist designs is that the style emphasizes affordability and not just necessity.

Most décor items are bare ornaments, rounded furniture, organic and clean detailing, as well as dominantly black and white color palettes. It is also characterized by bare layouts and arrangements. You could call it a blend of minimalism and mid-century styles.

7. Shabby Chic Interior Design Style

A cozy living room with shabby chic interior design

The Shabby Chic Style is characterized by laid-back vibes, airy lighting fixtures, antique-touch furniture, and a vintage-inspired charm. It is inspired by modern designs, but it has some elements of contemporary design.

Where the home uses elements that appear old with a lot of wear and tear but are highly functional, sometimes, new items are distressed to give the appearance of an antique.

8. Eclectic Interior Design Style

Eclectic living room with vibrant colors, patterned rug, and a mix of furniture styles

Eclecticism is all about picking ideas and inspiration from a broad and diverse range of sources. The Eclectic Interior Design style creates homes that are rich and layered with ideas picked from design eras and styles spanning centuries.

Rooms designed with eclectic style have multiple focal points and work on balancing colors and textures to not overwhelm the eye. Many people associate the eclectic home décor with the ‘anything goes’ approach. However, it is a more purposeful and planned way of interior design.

Walls are usually kept simple. They allow the designer to add accessories that make an impact. You can play with a lot of textures and patterns to make your eclectic décor harmonize with your mood. Using textures that contrast can create a memorable eclectic feel to your home.

Eclectic homes with a simple color palette are usually accompanied by textures to add interest to the room design. Hence, many designers try to use one texture at least thrice throughout the home. Statement pieces are essential in a modern eclectic home. Place them at the right places by visualising them using advanced interior design software.

9. Industrial Interior Design Style

The crux of this space is minimal, raw, and uncluttered. It has been in vogue since the early 20th century. The urban industrial color palette is neutral, so you can save bold hues for small details. Go for combinations of neutral colors for a clean and minimalist look. Play with charcoal black, chalky white, and utilitarian greys with rustic timbers to add warmth to any space, and make your home appear spacious.

, Interior Stylist & Retailer says, “The key to this design is about revealing all elements that most other styles try to hide, in terms of exposed bricks, concrete, raw hardwood beams, and iron rivets.”

For flooring, consider concrete and recycled timber floorboards to maintain an authentic individual look, that can be softened with floor mats. Opt for lighting made from metal, and recycled glass with a combination of pendant lights, lamps, with wide and low-hanging shades.

Use reclaimed vintage fittings to honor the home’s architectural features wherever possible. For window treatments,  your go-to choice is oversized iron frame windows, to allow unrestricted access to natural light and soften the space.

Your furniture choices center on functional, repurposed, and minimal. Go for time-worn leather Chesterfield sofas, oversized linen sectionals, leather upholstered dining armchairs, recycled timber, and iron desks.

Before you splurge on these iconic, and expensive furniture pieces, you may want to visualise how comfortable they will be, from different angles under different lighting conditions and test their fit to you and your aesthetics. Do this right with the help of interior design software and you won’t regret it.

22. Maximalist Interior Design Style

A maximalist living room with a bold color palette, featuring a mix of patterns and textures.

A common misconception is that maximalism means constantly adding more stuff. But, that’s not it. It’s about embracing your personality, your story, and your colors. Bring in super dark walls for a bold look. Your best choices are emerald, deep blues, etc. Deep contrasting tones are common in maximalist houses. You can also incorporate art walls, or gallery walls to come off as eclectic.

, Principal Interior Designer says, “The very first thing when it comes to maximalism is bringing in color. What I love about the maximalist style when it comes to color you can go from one extreme to another easily. You can even go for neutrals, and then bring in a splash of colors through fabrics, materials, and finishes.”

You can fill the art wall with frames that don’t match, styles and make them cohesive by spacing them properly. Embrace your collections. To keep your decor from being too random, find common colors, and patterns and repeat them throughout the room.

Bring in all comfortable pieces that give a snuggly vibe. If you travel often and bring home a lot of souvenirs, going for a maximalist interior design style is the best way to decorate your home.

23. 1970s Revival Interior Design Style

70s style home decor

, a Home Decor + Design Expert says, “The 1970s were an interesting time in history and design, including disco, glamor, bold colors, sparkles, colors, etc when we were recovering from sleek, minimalist modernism.”

Some of the elements that ruled the 1970s were indoor house plants, explosions of color, stacked stone fireplaces, exposed brick walls, floating staircases, wall-to-wall carpeting, and wicker furniture. For colors, this style involves statement jewel tones – emerald, amethyst, and sapphire to be incorporated on sofas and accent chairs.

If you don’t want bold color explosions in your home, you can still choose black and white combinations, shades of grey, or a fine combination of warm tone neutrals, and contrast them.

If you want an earthy feel, introduce earthy tones within a neutral color palette – creamy white, rust, ochre, and warm brown. Go eclectic and go bold when it comes to choosing patterns. Mix prints of different scales, and try to find at least one color that’s similar between both prints.

Take a leap of faith in your creativity and choose furniture with never-before-seen shapes, including swivel accent chairs, sculptural chairs, and thick marble tabletops. Source these furniture pieces second-hand from thrift stores to get rare gems from the 1970s.

24. English Country Home Style

A cozy living room with floral wallpaper and comfortable sofas.

, a Home & Interiors Expert says, “Homes that adapt the English Country home design style exude warmth, character, and a timeless appeal and lead to cozy comfort. These homes are filled with darling florals, antique furniture and all perfectly imperfect charm you could ask for.”

These homes prioritize comfort and blend it in seamlessly with aesthetics. For wall treatments, go for floral patterns in wallpapers. Choose antique furniture with a touch of history, to bring in a traditional English home appearance. For decor accessories and furniture, opt for natural materials like wood, stone, and rattan.

With all these natural colors and materials in place, don’t think you can’t add a dollop of colors. A splash of color in a neutral palette is a treat to the eyes. Incorporate unexpected treasures of a playful contrast. Add a sense of whimsey with a mix of pattern and color.

For fabrics, you’d be surprised to know how beautifully florals and stripes weave into the design style. Bring in floral throw pillows, a striped fabric-covered Ottoman, and layered window treatments.

Decorate your walls with floral wallpaper, wainscoting, tongue-and-groove paneling, and decorative wall murals. A final cherry on top would be lovely floral arrangements using antique pitchers, urns, or vases to create whimsical arrangements to create a welcoming and warm environment.

25. Cottagecore Interior Design Style

Cozy cottagecore living room with wood walls, comfy sofas, and vintage decor.

The cottage-core style is an aesthetic where people dress and live as if they have a rural life and is the exact opposite of hustle culture. This style means having a countryside, traditional, and nostalgic look with a cozy, cottage feeling. For furniture, choose reclaimed wood, secondhand furniture will be the best way to instantly create a nostalgic look.

, Co-founder & Interior Architect at Dantier + Balogh says, “Stay away from plastic and glass furniture of any kind when you’re going for a cottage-core design style, especially if they have sharp lines and look very minimal.”

Furniture in this style needs to have curves and more fluidity to its shape – for example, spice racks, coffee tables, old-fashioned plate racks, an ornate chest of drawers, floor-to-ceiling bookcases, bureau-style desks, etc.

You can grab them from thrift stores, and online marketplaces selling quaint decor accessories and furniture. Go for sofas with slip-covers and patterned ottomans that act as coffee tables. Use thick fabrics only. Bring in dried flowers in vases too.

26. Grandmillennial Interior Design Style

A cozy living room with soft colors, patterned fabrics, and vintage-inspired decor.

This style was curated and given a name in 2019. It refers to mixing pieces from your grandparents’ time with a few modern elements to create a cozy, welcoming space layered without being stuffy. Create a space that’s serene, happy, and nature-inspired.

Start with a neutral base of white, beige, pearl, or tan, and layer in brighter hues. Bring in greens inspired by eucalyptus, soft sage, jade, and moss, along with gentle blues, dusty pinks, and soft oranges.

Go for traditional inspired flooring with painted natural timber or dark stained herringbone flooring. Ensure there’s warmth underfoot with intricately designed rugs. Mix glam and natural lighting fixtures. For ambient lighting, go with ornate, crystal drop chandeliers, for accent lighting use swing arm wall lamps, and for task lighting, go for Tiffany lamps.

For window treatments, use heavily printed curtains, drapes, and Roman blinds. Opt for materials like silk, cotton, wool, linen, and brocade. Prints like flora, fauna, twill, gingham, and checks. To source authentic furniture, go for a mix of Louis XV, Regency, and Victorian styles.

27. Moroccan Interior Design Style

A cozy Moroccan living room with colorful tiles, patterned curtains, and plush seating.

Moroccan design style has captured the world with its charm. It may be closely linked to the Bohemian style, but is different.

, Editor, Stylist, and Home Decor Expert from Toronto says, “Moroccan design is an ornamental visual feast with a burse of expression, craftsmanship, history and love.”

This style is all about color, texture, and fluid lines. It draws much of its inspiration from Moorish design with no lines or edges. It comes from arch-shaped doors, open courtyards, water fountains, and gardens. Choose bold colors – ranging from Royal blue, deep purple, red, yellow, and green, and infuse them in your design. Throw in the soothing colors of the dessert to create a holistic look.

You’re never at a dearth of patterns when it comes to Moroccan design style, as it comes alive due to its intricate motifs. Moroccan, Zellige, geometric, and tribal patterns are best suited for the design, and you can bring in sofas, poufs, ottomans, and hand-carved wood for impeccable furniture pieces to give it life.

For flooring, your best options are Zellige and ceramic tiles. Use drape curtains, sheer curtains, or crystal curtains to give a dreamy vibe to your home.

Design styles are abundant and unique, so it is up to you to find the style that will work best for you. There is also the option of combining elements of several styles in order to get that personal touch.

Before commencing with your interior design plans, be sure to research deeper about each of the styles and how different they are from one another. Try Foy Neo for 14-day free trial to design your home with all these interior design styles.

The 23 Essential Interior Design Styles You Need to Know

From midcentury modern to maximalist, coastal to contemporary, and everything in between.

interior design styles

Different interior design styles help us describe spaces with cohesive looks or approaches. These styles can evolve during specific periods, like Art Deco from the 1920s, or from a regional appreciation for certain textures, colors, and finishes, such as Scandinavian design . You might know the pared-down, angular midcentury modern style as a product of the postwar period or recognize bold colors and patterns as features of a maximalist design style.

Understanding different interior design styles can help you articulate what you like, making it easier to decorate, shop, or consult with a professional interior designer . For instance, if you realize you prefer a coastal design style, you can use that knowledge to guide your choices in paint colors, furniture, and soft goods.

More importantly, once you sharpen your understanding of interior design styles, you can have fun with it. In the words of award-winning interior designer Nate Berkus , “The best design projects were the ones where people broke all the rules.” Because after all, the most impactful design style is your own. Read on to learn about the interior design styles you need to know.

Midcentury Modern

furniture, room, interior design, property, wall, architecture, building, hardwood, house, bed,

Though it has recently become a catchall term for anything 20th-century, “midcentury modern” refers to designs from the middle of the 20th century (generally the mid-1940s to early 1970s). Though Frank Lloyd Wright created his own signature style of organic modernism, several classic midcentury modern details are apparent in this restored prefab house of his design: warm wood paneling, brown bathroom tiles, and chrome plumbing. Japanese influence—as seen by the folding screen atop the bed—was also prominent in American midcentury modernism.

Neo-Industrial

industrial living room

Not to be confused with industrial design, which refers to work made for industrial purposes, neo-industrial, or industrial-style interior design borrows elements of industrial architecture—like the concrete walls, steel details, and spartan windows in this home by Kathleen McCormick—for use in residential interiors.

Traditional

dark room with traitional chairs

Designer Corey Damen Jenkins has a knack for making a home's traditional interior design style look fresh—he even wrote a book titled Design Remix : A New Spin on Traditional Rooms . In this dining room, paneled mahogany walls are lit by 19th-century sconces, and an antique table is surrounded by Louis XVI chairs.

Transitional

1990s ranch house in texas hill country designed by marie flanigan interiors

Spaces that bridge the gap between modern and traditional—like this living room by Marie Flanigan—are dubbed transitional. Here, the designer pairs classic elements like a bench seat sofa and antique coffee table with modern lines on the stone side table and 21st-century artwork.

Combining colors, patterns, and textures is the path to a maximalist interior. If you're inclined to go for a “more is more” approach, you'll hardly go wrong. The trick to having it not look overwhelming is balance. Take inspiration from our 2023 Whole Home where designer Isabel Ladd decked out the primary suite in perfectly paired palettes.

Scandinavian

1899 brownstone in fort greene, brooklyn designed by brownstone boys

At its core, the Scandinavian interior design style is characterized by an aesthetic that combines minimalism with coziness and functionality. Picture high-pile rugs and natural wood tones, crisp bedding , and clutter-free interiors.

With an eye toward functional simplicity, Farmhouse style “suggests a more humble, vernacular interpretation of American historical styles from the 18th and 19th centuries, whether they be Colonial, Greek Revival, or Victorian,” explains architect Gil Schafer .

The Americana interior design style blends Farmhouse charm with midcentury-chic elements. Key features include wood paneling, vintage artwork, and functional finishes. To complete the look, consider adding checkerboard prints, patchwork quilts, and vintage solid wood furniture.

powder room

The rough-and-ready cousin of the Farmhouse design style, Rustic design is focused on organic elements (like unpolished stone and natural wood), a neutral color palette, and functionality. The beauty lies within the craftsmanship of the pieces used. Think about this Montana home for inspiration.

minimal color scheme interior design

Minimalism is about paring down the decor and color palette to just the basics. Since this interior design style means doing more with less, you'll often notice the importance of light and contrast in minimalist spaces, like this one by Robson Rak .

green boho room

Bohemian design combines global influences and an artfully mismatched approach to design. This style mixes colors, patterns, and textures in ways that feel eclectic and exciting. A rich palette of jewel tones and large-scale patterns is key, as is fabric upholstery and natural textures (think rattan , wicker, and seagrass) that bring the outdoors in.

Combining elements of Spanish, Italian, and French design, the Mediterranean interior design style is essentially a different spin on coastal style . The go-to color pairing is blue and white, but you can warm it up with terra-cotta, natural wood tones, and earthy textures like rattan and stone.

French Country

French county design combines natural materials, muted paint colors , toile fabrics, extravagant lighting, touches of gold, woven tapestries, and more—all with a rustic touch. Throw matching sets to the curb and focus on antiques rather than buying new pieces. The overall effect of French country decor is meant to be warm, welcoming, and casual.

The eclectic interior design style, similar to maximalist interior design, incorporates elements from various styles, periods, and locations to create a unique space. It features a mix of vintage and new items, giving the room an appearance of having been slowly curated and assembled over time.

'70s Revival

brown bathroom tiles

Taking classic silhouettes and color palettes from the 1970s and giving them a modern twist is key to this interior design style. You can skip the shag carpets, but incorporate brown tones, chrome metal finishes, and low-slung furniture for a cozy, updated feel.

English Cottage

a green chair in front of a bookshelf

This interior design style combines several elements of traditional British country houses, like floral wallpaper, painted millwork, vintage touches, and fanciful textures, and updates them for modern use, as designer Elizabeth Hay did here in her family home.

Over a century, the profession of interior designing has evolved from being the art of decoration—embracing form and function—to a highly specialized area of design requiring years of education. In 1913, the first interior design book was published by Elsie de Wolfe, called “The House in Good Taste.”

However, the legislation supporting this profession was passed by Alabama in 1982. Since then, the interior design reservations have shifted from affluent classes to commoners. In fact, the global interior design market is projected to reach USD 210 billion by 2027.

If you are an interior designer looking to maximize your business, you must employ the principles of sustainable interior design.
