The nursing programs at Front Range Community College are the tops in the state.
According to RegisteredNursing.org, the nursing program at FRCC’s Larimer Campus has been selected as the best nursing school in Colorado. FRCC’s Westminster Campus nursing program came in at number three on the list of 28 programs in the state, a FRCC news release states.
Founded in 1968, FRCC’s nursing programs have been well respected for training skilled nurses for more than 50 years, the news release said. As evidence, the college’s programs consistently earn some of the highest pass rates on the national nursing licensure exam, according to the school.
Last year, the pass rates for FRCC’s were 98% for the Larimer campus and 97% for the Westminster campus, the news release states. Those compared to 88% pass rates for the national average, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
“Our nursing graduates are extremely well trained and ready to hit the ground running in a hospital setting or medical practice,” said Dianna Johnston, dean of nursing at Front Range Community College, in the news release. “Students leave our programs with great jobs lined up – and we hear from our employer partners that they are extremely satisfied with the FRCC nurses they hire.”
FRCC’s current enrollment in its associate degree nursing programs is about 250 students for all campuses, said the college’s spokeswoman Jessica Peterson via email.
FRCC also provides a bachelor’s degree in nursing program but that was not included in the RegisteredNursing.org ranking, Peterson said.
RegisteredNursing.org’s evaluation process considers various factors, including past and present first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates, weighted by year, according to the news release.
The NCLEX-RN exam is used by all state boards of nursing across the United States to help assess a student’s competency and is required for licensure, the news release states.
School officials say FRCC’s nursing programs are key in meeting the state’s persistent workforce shortages in health care, and specifically in nursing.
The state is expected to be short an estimated 10,000 nurses by 2026, which means bringing new nurses into the profession is critical to provide quality care to patients. With the state’s aging population, there is a severe need for highly skilled and diversified nurses around Colorado, the news release states.

“FRCC’s new program is helping to meet a growing need for skilled health-care providers in Colorado by building on our 50-year history of outstanding nursing education,” President Andy Dorsey said in a written statement. “It also provides students an affordable route to good jobs in their home state.”
Josie Moszynski, director of patient services–acute care at UCHealth Broomfield Hospital, said nurses with BSNs have a different knowledge base from having access to additional training including critical thinking skills. “Not only can this help lead to higher quality care provided to patients, but it guides nurses to successful lifelong careers. FRCC’s program is helping us meet the health care needs of the communities we serve now and in the future,” she said.
Colorado is experiencing an annual shortage of at least 500 nurses with four-year BSN degrees, and this figure is expected to grow to a cumulative shortage of 4,500 nurses with BSNs by 2024, FRCC said.
The Class of 2020 is a small one — with just two graduates. They include a nurse who is currently the director of nursing at a rehabilitation hospital and a nurse at Denver Health Medical Center.
