Thanks for your review, in this free course, you will learn how to.

Creative writing is the process-oriented form of writing that combines imagination and innovation to tell a story. The element of creativity sets your story apart from its counterparts in the same genre. Writing requires more than telling tales of fantastical settings thronged with unique creatures: it expresses your thoughts and feelings via a compelling and memorable story that engages your readers through character, language and plot. This course teaches you how to use your creativity to think a little outside the box and put a unique twist on things. Creative writing has many genres and subgenres and a set of established rules and practices that can help writers develop their own distinctive voices. We introduce you to these elements to help you get started with writing.

The most challenging element of storytelling is often the plot, which is in turn driven by engaging characters. We show you how to create plots with suspense, sentiment and sensation and explain how to keep them moving through interesting, tangible settings. The course then explains how to build complex, vivid and unforgettable characters with compelling dialogue and action. We also examine the tools used by poets to write verse. We compare creative fiction and nonfiction writing and lay out the techniques used to create novels, short stories, dramas, screenplays and memoirs. Are you familiar with the term ‘writer’s block’? It is something that all writers face while struggling to create new work during a creative slowdown. We will demonstrate how to overcome writer's block and come up with original ideas when creativity seems elusive.

The course then establishes the role of critical thinking to help you understand how technical writing differs from creative writing. We explain how to structure business proposals, letters, emails and meeting agendas. Writing is never complete unless published. The course walks you through the process of editing and evaluating text to meet publishing requirements and finally get your work out there. If you wish to explore your creativity and realise your dreams of becoming a writer, this course is for you. We provide the technical skills you need to turn your talent into published text using a unique writing process that breaks through writer’s block. Whether you have an idea for a novel or even a half-finished manuscript in a drawer, this course helps you to find your voice as a storyteller.

Sharpened Visions: A Poetry Workshop

These lessons support the school of thought that poetry isn’t just a means of expression. Rather, using it for just that, is like “using the internet just for email”. Learn to use the several tools of poetic composition, study the works of contemporary poets and, of course, try your own hand at the skill.

E-learning has opened new doors for aspiring creative talent around the globe. Over the past decade, free massive open online courses (MOOCs) have made instruction by top professors at Ivy League schools accessible to anyone with wifi. Fields like creative writing have especially benefited. Today‘s writers can systematically build literary techniques without paying tuition or leaving home.

"Online courses create welcoming communities where emerging authors support each other‘s development," says Dr. Hannah Stevens, a poetry lecturer with over 20 years of teaching experience. "Seeing fellow students from totally different backgrounds thrive gives people confidence to find their own voice."

Completion rates for virtual creative writing courses can rival traditional college classes, with 60% to 70% of enrollees finishing all assignments. Learners also report high satisfaction—92% say online writing workshops positively impacted their craft.

So which courses will unlock your storytelling potential without draining your bank account? I‘ve compiled reviews of 12 top-notch free writing classes covering fiction, poetry, scripts, songs, and memoirs. Whether you‘re starting from scratch or preparing to publish, these will sharpen your skills.

1. Introduction to Creative Writing

Offered By : University of East Anglia/FutureLearn Duration : 2 weeks at 2 hours per week

This Popular Class gives aspiring authors an overview of key aspects of creative writing, from generating ideas to composing compelling fiction. Through video lessons and writing exercises, you‘ll practice essential skills like character development, structuring a scene, and editing your work. An active online community also allows you to share drafts and offer constructive feedback on fellow students’ writing.

Key topics :

  • Finding inspiration
  • Creating authentic characters
  • Plot and narrative structure
  • Point of view and voice
  • Revising your work critically

My Take : This course offers a nicely condensed introduction for writing newcomers. The discussing drafts forum helps writers workshop stories organically. One downside—I wish the certificate recognized completion with more than a digital badge.

2. Writing Your First Novel

Offered By : Open University via FutureLearn Duration : 3 weeks at 3 hours per week

Taught by bestselling authors like Peter James pictured here, this free online creative writing course provides expert guidance on planning, writing, editing, and publishing a novel. You‘ll map out plot and characters for your book, analyze scenes from famous published works, complete weekly milestones for drafts, and learn to take feedback from fellow writers.

  • Developing an idea into a novel
  • Structuring your book effectively
  • Writing convincing dialogue
  • Handling multiple storylines
  • Preparing your manuscript for submission

My Take : Budding novelists should definitely consider this course. Having published authors for teachers allows you to model your work after writers who‘ve navigated the submission process successfully. My only complaint is that three weeks feels short—I could have used a couple more lessons.

3. Creative Writing: Start Writing Fiction

Offered By : University of British Columbia via edX Duration : 5 weeks at 2-4 hours per week

This hands-on creative writing workshop focuses on the key elements of compelling short fiction. You‘ll dig into aspects like establishing a narrative voice, bringing settings and characters to life, and structuring events into meaningful arcs. By the end, you’ll produce one complete short story and refine your overall approach to fictional writing.

  • Fundamentals of fiction writing
  • Building realistic characters
  • Immersive worldbuilding
  • Outlining stories

My Take : The full short story workshop process in this course is invaluable. Having your draft critiqued by a group of 15 fellow writers showed me how readers perceive my work. I also appreciated studying voice and characters in depth before attempting a full narrative.

4. Writing Young Adult Fiction

Offered By : Michigan State University via Coursera Duration : 5 weeks at 3 hours per week

Specifically developed for aspiring authors of young adult novels, this hands-on course expertly breaks down believable teen fiction. You‘ll learn how to craft coming-of-age stories, voice relatable protagonists, develop supporting characters, incorporate relevant themes, and structure compelling arcs.

  • Understanding the YA genre and audience
  • Building complex teen characters
  • Addressing adolescent realities
  • Pacing/tension in YA storytelling
  • Revising with young readers in mind

My Take : If you‘re considering YA seriously, this course delivers. The weekly peer workshops and editing practice using instructor John Smolens‘ feedback honed my POV shifts and dialogue enormously. My only nitpick is that lessons sometimes felt rushed packing so much quality content into five weeks.

5. Write Your First Screenplay

Offered By : University of East Anglia via FutureLearn Duration : 3 weeks at 1-3 hours per week

Film and television screenwriting requires mastery of key dramatic elements like conflict, act structure, scenes, and dialogue. This introductory course outlines the skills needed to develop and script stories for the screen. Weekly modules walk you through conceptualizing ideas, plotting major events, writing effective sequences, sculpting characters, and polishing scenes.

  • Powerful drama dynamics
  • Conceptualizing cinematic stories
  • Script formatting basics
  • Three act plot architecture
  • Snappy, compelling dialogue
  • Layered, interesting characters

My Take : This course surveys screenwriting at a brisk pace. The assignments and peer discussions reignited my stalled attempt at drafting a pilot. My advice is to give yourself extra time for readings, video lectures, revisions, and workshopping each week.

6. Write Like Mozart: Classical Music Composition

Offered By : National University of Singapore via Coursera Duration : 4 weeks at 4 hours per week

While notation software has enabled more composing access than ever, writing captivating classical pieces requires creativity per greats like Mozart. This course reveals the foundational principles behind enduring melodies, harmonies, and structures. You‘ll gain universal skills applicable to all styles—from pop songs to film scores.

  • Rhythm, melody, harmony and form
  • Music notation basics
  • Analyzing classical masterpieces
  • Writing simple piano pieces
  • Expanding your melodic/harmonic palette

My Take : As an instrumentalist with zero composition background, this course unlocked a whole new creative realm for me. Analyzing the theoretical nuances behind my favorite piano and orchestral selections was hugely inspiring. The only downside was that 4 weeks flew by—I could have spent all year studying classical architecture.

7. The Craft of Poetic Form

Offered By : California Institute of the Arts via Kadenze Duration : 7 weeks at 2-4 hours per week

Many budding poets feel restricted by fixed structures and meters. But form can spur creativity while connecting you to literary heritage. This course examines styles like sonnets, villanelles, and pantoums to ignite your writing. Through poem analysis and virtual workshops, you’ll gain skills to wrangle life’s chaos into poetic order.

  • Rhythm and meter
  • Sonnets and villanelles
  • Pantoums and nonce structures
  • Language precision

My Take : As a longtime journal-writer intimidated by formal poetry, this course opened my eyes to a new mode of expression. Learning the history and structural nuances behind different closed forms has already improved my free verse through better rhythm and concision. My workshop poem even won an editor‘s prize contest!

8. Dynamic Dialogue for Screenwriters

Offered By : Emerson College via edX Duration : 8 weeks at 2-4 hours per week

Sizzling dialogue elevates good scripts into great films. Using vivid movie clips, this course unpacks how masters like Tarantino, Sorkin and Kaufman write lively exchanges that drive plot and reveal character. You‘ll study and practice techniques for developing authentic voices for all characters through dialogue.

  • Formatting dialogue correctly
  • Making dialogue flow naturally
  • Crafting unique character voices
  • Maximizing subtext
  • Impactful pacing

My Take : I‘m 200 pages into my first TV pilot attempt, and this class showed me how much I still need to evolve dialogue-wise. Watching legend Walter Hill break down the verbal choreography behind his shootout sequences was hugely illuminating regarding pacing, power dynamics and more. My advice: take pages of notes!

9. Overcoming Fear of Failure for Writers

Offered By : Northwestern University via Coursera Duration : 4 weeks at 2-5 hours per week

Even talented scribes wrestle with self-doubt. This supportive course offers psychology-backed techniques to help writers defeat creative paralysis for good. You’ll identify critic myths, reframe perfectionism through journaling, and build resilience through small milestones.

  • Silencing your inner critic
  • Reframing failure as growth
  • Fostering resilience through small wins
  • Organizing writing goals using SMART criteria
  • Meeting deadlines consistently

My Take : This encouraging class provided a game-changing mental reset regarding my writing hang-ups. The SMART goal setting framework enabled me to finally start the graphic novel script I‘ve been procrastinating on for years. Bonus: lessons incorporate research-backed strategies for sustaining motivation.

10. Scriptwriting: Write a TV Pilot

Offered By : UC Irvine via Coursera Duration : 5 weeks at 1-2 hours per week

Aspiring television scribes: this course guides you to conceive and write a complete 30-page pilot episode for an original series. Using lively video lessons, you’ll learn how to design memorable characters, snappy dialogue, compelling conflicts, cliffhangers, and episode structure.

  • Developing original show concepts
  • TV formatting rules
  • Character relationships
  • Scene-by-scene plotting
  • Cliffhangers and mid-point breaks
  • Polishing action and dialogue

My Take : Of the dozen plus television writing classes I‘ve taken online, this course stands above the rest. Combining lectures, writing exercises, and peer feedback workshops motivated me to deliver the most polished pilot draft yet on my sci-fi comedy concept. My completed script even earned me a meeting with a producer!

11. Write and Publish Poetry

Offered By : Wesleyan University via Coursera Duration : 4 weeks at 3-5 hours per week

Many aspiring poets get lost between initial inspiration and seeing their name in print. Guided by award-winning Wesleyan Press authors, this workshop provides a clear roadmap for taking verse from draft to published poem. You‘ll analyze top literary journals, select targeted submission outlets, craft compelling cover letters, and promote published pieces.

Key topics:

  • Researching literary journals
  • Writing killer cover letters
  • Developing an online platform
  • Handling rejection and feedback
  • Promoting published poems

My Take : I landed my first litmag publication thanks to this course de-mystifying peer journal culture and process. Wesleyan also connects students directly with editors seeking work, which led me to coordinate a virtual magazine feature on my experimental Instagram poets collective.

12. Memoir Writing for Beginners

Offered By : Brown University via edX Duration : 7 weeks at 2-4 hours per week

Memoirs distill pivotal life stories into personal yet universal literature. This course helps novices recount their journeys with humor, resilience and redemption. Through supported recollections centered around a focused event, receive guidance on braiding narrative threads into one cohesive, cathartic whole.

  • Identifying your seminal experience
  • Conducting background research
  • Mapping memories into chapters
  • Tempering painful subjects with levity
  • Submitting polished manuscripts

My Take : As a lifelong journaler finally attempting a memoir at age 65, this class taught me to curate ideas thematically. I assumed my project would center around career. But the writing prompts helped me realize my trailblazing experience integrating Southern schools at age 15 actually marks my origin story.

So which course speaks to your creative spirit? The options span dramatic writing, verse, lyrics, and more from major universities. With guidance from award-winning instructors and supportive fellow learners, these classes can launch the next chapter of your artistic journey.

Stanford Creative Writing Program

The Stanford Creative Writing Program, founded in 1946 by Wallace Stegner, has become one of the nation’s most distinguished creative writing institutions. After almost 80 years, the program continues to evolve while also respecting its original vision of recruiting and supporting talented writers, offering exceptional creative writing instruction and mentorship, and inspiring undergraduates to develop their own unique creative written expression.

In the 1940s, E. H. Jones generously created the Wallace Stegner Fellowship, now considered the most prestigious creative writing fellowship in the U.S. for emerging writers. Dr. Jones also made possible the Jones Lectureships, which are limited, fixed-year teaching appointments, allowing exceptional Stegner Fellows some time and support to prepare a manuscript for publication, hone their teaching skills, and transition to a longer-term teaching career elsewhere.

The original framework of term-limited appointments allowed for a consistent flow of selected Stegner Fellows into the Jones Lectureship. However, over time this framework of term-limited appointments was not followed.

In the past two years, the School of Humanities and Sciences leadership and the Creative Writing Academic Council faculty have been working to formulate necessary changes in the program and to identify additional resources to meet its growing needs. A Working Group of Creative Writing Academic Council faculty held listening sessions and discussions.

Now, after thoughtful deliberation, the Working Group has recommended restoring the original intent of the Jones Lectureships: one-year appointments with the possibility of renewal for a limited term, up to a total of five years. This change will again allow Stegner Fellows the opportunity to apply to be Jones Lecturers once they have completed their fellowships. In other words, the Jones Lectureships are not being eliminated; they are only being term limited, as was the original intent of the program, so that the Stegner Fellows have an opportunity to teach Creative Writing courses at Stanford. We plan for there to be as many lecturers in the Program in five years’ time as there are today, and we expect to offer more classes then than now.

The university, school, and numerous generous donors are committed to not only the excellence of the program but also its growth. This means increasing the number of Creative Writing classes to better meet high student demand as well as ensuring competitive compensation for both the lecturers and fellows. We will provide more updates in early fall quarter about the Creative Writing Program and how it will continue to be one of the preeminent programs in the nation.

We understand that these changes to the Jones Lectureships will be met with mixed reactions. However, we firmly believe that the changes advance the program’s pedagogical mission and provide promising writers with the resources to complete their books and obtain appointments at other colleges and universities.

Throughout the history of the program, the Jones Lecturers—both those who are here now and those who have been lecturers in the past—have helped make Stanford Creative Writing what it is today, and we are truly grateful to them for their significant contributions to the program’s mission.

What will you study on the Novel Writing MA?

This course is divided into five modules taken over three terms (if studied full time) which take you through the full process of writing a novel. While exploring in depth such key techniques of fiction as plotting, narrative voice, characterisation and background research, each module is also designed to be flexible and to allow you to bring your own writing interests and projects to the assignments, extending the boundaries of your current practice through self-reflection, research, analysis, and creative exploration.

Here is a brief overview of what you will study each year

Writing as a Novelist (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module explores key writing techniques such as narrative, setting and characterisation, with reference to literary examples and the different methods used by writers in the creative process. This is an opportunity for you to explore the scenes and characters of your planned novel or develop a variety of ideas and approaches if you have not decided on the content of your story.

Reading as a Novelist (30 Credits) - Compulsory

Building on the 'Reading as a Writer' concept (most famously explored in Francine Prose's book), this module explores how published writers handle the technical and ethical problems which are likely to present themselves in your writing. Through a combination of weekly 'practical criticism' exercises and an online 'book group' you will develop the analytical skills to improve your own writing and the problem-solving techniques to overcome any obstacles in your approach.

Research: Writing, Markets, Audiences (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module explores the methods fiction-writers employ to research elements of their stories, as well as investigating the reasons why research is necessary – to provide authenticity, to avoid error, to create verisimilitude, and even to get inspiration. You will also learn about researching the possible markets, audiences and publishing outlets for your creative work.

Developing and Publishing the Novel (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module moves on from the 'portfolio' focus of earlier modules to deal with the challenges of working on a specific novel. Through a series of writing exercises you will begin to evolve characters, explore themes and refine settings for your planned novel. This is an opportunity for you to begin the sustained prose narrative that is expected in the following dissertation.

Major Project (60 Credits) - Compulsory

Your final dissertation is an opportunity for you to take all the knowledge and skills you have acquired in the preceding modules and apply them to 20,000 words of an original novel with a synopsis for sending to an agent or publisher and an accompanying critical commentary.

Entry requirements

Below is a list of countries with information on each about which qualifications we accept. If your country is not listed please email [email protected] .

Contextual offers

We apply a contextual admissions process for UK undergraduate applicants who have been in care, attend a low performing school, live in an area where few students go to university, or are the first generation of their family to enter Higher Education.

Those who are eligible may receive a conditional offer with reduced entry requirements, typically up to two grades lower for A-levels and one grade (or eight tariff points) for BTEC or mixed qualifications.

Mixed qualifications

Typically the only scenario where we make conditional offers expressed as UCAS tariff points is when an applicant presents mixed qualifications, most typically a combination of A Levels and a BTEC qualification.

In this instance, we may make a tariff point offer to present the applicant with more flexibility on equivalencies. In this case, please be aware that we may still ask for a specific score across certain qualifications and subjects. E.g. 'This offer is conditional on you achieving 128 tariff points. This must include A Level Mathematics at grade B.'

Subject exclusions

We do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. These subjects will not be included in any conditional offer we make.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

We welcome applications from students who are completing relevant EPQ Projects. Whilst we recognise the value of these projects in preparing students for independent learning at university, the EPQ is unlikely to form part of any conditional offer we make.

The EPQ will also not lower the specifics of any conditional offer we choose to make. We will consider the EPQ as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.

We recognise that there will be differences of opportunity varying by school and college. As not all students will have the opportunity to sit AS Level exams, it is unlikely we will include AS Level grades in any offer we choose to make. Where students have completed an AS Level subject, we will consider this as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.

University preparation programmes

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City's undergraduate courses.

Access to Higher Education

We welcome Access course applications from 'mature' students. These applicants will be considered on the basis of their own merits. Please be aware that Access students are often asked for further information to supplement their application, this is normally in the form of a questionnaire.

A typical offer for an Access applicant would be:

  • Access to HE course with 60 credits overall to include 45 credits at Level 3 with 24 Level 3 credits at Distinction and 21 Level 3 credits at Merit.
  • The Access qualification should be supplemented by at least a grade 6 (B) in Mathematics and grade 4 (C) in English Language at GCSE.

Ukraine war latest: Zelenskyy reveals plan after Kursk invasion; more than 50 killed in double missile strike

Two missiles have killed more than 50 people and injured hundreds in a city in central Ukraine, one of the deadliest attacks by Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken about his intentions after Kyiv launched an incursion into Russia last month.

The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and major city Lviv were again targeted by waves of Russian drones and missiles overnight, authorities report.

Lviv's governor Maksym Kozytskyi noted "loud" noises as witnesses cited by the Reuters news agency reported what they thought sounded like air defences being engaged near the western city and the capital.

Mr Kozytskyi also said residential buildings had been damaged in the attacks, but offered no further detail as to any casualties.

Kyiv's military administration said sirens were sounding because of a threat of missiles "fired from Tu-95MS aircraft".

Neighbouring Poland activated aircraft this morning - for the third time in eight days - to ensure the safety of its airspace.

"This is another very busy night for the entire air defence system in Poland due to the observed activity of the long-range aviation of the Russian Federation carrying out strikes," its air force command said.

Russia has been pounding Ukraine in the past 10 days in what some bloggers and analysts suggest is Moscow's response to Kyiv's recent invasion of the Kursk region.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Ukraine war.

Yesterday saw Russia carry out one of the deadliest attacks of the war as it struck a military academy and nearby hospital in the central city of Poltava with two ballistic missiles, killing at least 51 people and injuring 271 more.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last night that some people were still under the rubble and everything was being done to save as many lives as possible.

Earlier in the day he said "Russian scum" would be held accountable for the deadly strike.

The region is now in three days of mourning over the attack, which Russia is yet to comment on.

Less than a day after the strike on Poltova, Ukrainian authorities said Russia launched an airstrike on the northeastern Sumy region, hitting a university building. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

Elsewhere, Vladimir Putin received a red-carpet welcome as he visited Mongolia on his first trip to a member country of the International Criminal Court.

The lavish visit came despite the ICC having a warrant out for Mr Putin's arrest on allegations of war crimes - with member countries bound to detain suspects. Mongolia, however, said this would be too difficult as it is dependent on Russian-sourced energy.

Stay with us as we bring you the latest throughout the day today.

That brings an end to our live coverage of the Ukraine war for this evening.

We'll be back with any major developments overnight and our rolling updates will continue soon.

Before we go, here's a reminder of the day's key events:

  • Ukrainian authorities said at least 51 people were killed and more than 200 injured in a Russian ballistic missile attack on the central city of Poltava. The missiles hit a military academy and a nearby hospital, officials said;
  • Three days of mourning were declared by Poltava regional head Philip Pronin after one of the deadliest attacks of the war;
  • Moldova's government said its energy dependence on Russia made it difficult to heed a requirement by the International Criminal Court  to arrest Vladimir Putin  as he visited the country.
  • Meanwhile, several government ministers resigned and the deputy head of the Ukrainian president's office was sacked ahead of an expected government reshuffle;
  • And Volodymyr Zelenskyy told NBC News in an exclusive interview that Ukraine planned to indefinitely hold territory seized in its shock invasion of Kursk last month as part of a plan to force Mr Putin to the negotiating table.

Washington plans to send more military aid to Ukraine in the coming weeks, the White House has said.

National security spokesperson John Kirby told a briefing that the US's support for Kyiv remains "unshakeable" and it was focused on strengthening Ukraine's military and defences against Russian attacks.

He noted that the US recently announced another drawdown of military assistance - and said it intends to send another round of aid in the coming weeks.

Mongolia ignored the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin as it rolled out the red carpet to receive him today.

The Russian president should, in theory, have been handcuffed as he arrived - but the Mongolian government said earlier that it was difficult to arrest him due to the country's position of energy dependence on Moscow (see 17.35 post).

Mr Putin was welcomed in the main square of Ulaanbaatar by an honour guard as a crowd of people watched behind temporary barriers.

He and Mongolian leader Ukhnaa Khurelsukh later laid a wreath at a monument to Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov, visited a school curated by a Russian economic university and attended a reception ceremony where Mr Putin gave a toast.

Russia has launched another attack on Ukraine, officials have said, less than a day after its deadly ballistic missile strike killed more than 50 people in Poltava.

The regional administration of the northeastern Sumy region said Russian forces launched an airstrike on Sumy city tonight, hitting one of its university buildings.

It said a guided bomb was believed to have been used in the attack. There were no details of any casualties.

"All necessary services are available on site," the administration said in a post to Telegram .

We reported earlier on Voldymyr Zelenskyy's comments that Ukraine plans to indefinitely hold territory it has seized in its Kursk invasion (see 18.17 post).

Asked about the surprise invasion in an interview with our US partner network   NBC News , Mr Zelenskyy said the operation was aimed at restoring Ukraine's "territorial integrity".

He also said Kyiv did not "need" Russian land - but he remained silent on what the next steps would be.

Watch a clip from the interview here...

People are still trapped under the rubble of a building destroyed by a Russian attack in Poltava, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

Rescue efforts are ongoing and rubble is still being cleared, he said in his nightly address.

The Ukrainian president confirmed at least 51 people have died and 271 are injured as a result of one of the deadliest attacks of the war so far.

"I am grateful to all the rescuers, doctors, medical nurses and all the Poltava residents who have joined in to help, donated blood, and who provide support," he said.

"We know that there are people under the rubble of the destroyed building. Everything is being done to save as many lives as possible."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has posted a video of his meeting with the UN's nuclear chief Rafael Mariano Grossi in Kyiv today.

Mr Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, met the Ukrainian president ahead of his visit to the Zaporizhzhia power plant, where he said the situation was "very fragile".

"The station is again on the verge of being on a blackout. We've had eight of those in the past. A blackout [means] no power; no power, no cooling. No cooling, then maybe you have a disaster," he told reporters before the meeting.

Mr Zelenskyy said his talks with Mr Grossi were focused "on the issue of strengthening nuclear safety in Ukraine, ensuring constant monitoring not only of the state of NPPs (nuclear power plants), but also of substations that are critical for their operation".

Russia has launched a new military-focused school course as it looks to prepare teenagers "mentally and physically" for service, the UK Ministry of Defence has said.

In its latest intelligence update, the ministry said the course for 15 to 18-year-olds is part of a new programme called "Foundations of Security and Defence of the Motherland".

Over 11 modules, students will cover a range of topics including "combined arms combat and small arms familiarisation", it said.

"The programme seeks to create and will likely result in a more militarised and security focused society," the MoD said.

It added that the new youth strategy in Russia was aimed primarily at preparing "pre-conscription age teenagers mentally and physically for military service".

Russia has also increased the number of summer camps for children which involve various military activities, according to the MoD.
