Marques Brownlee's ‘Panels’ Backlash, Explained

YouTuber MKBHD (Marques Brownlee), sparked controversy and backlash after launching ‘Panels,’ a subscription-based, HD wallpaper app for phones.

Tech reviewer Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, has sparked online backlash after releasing Panels, a subscription-based app that provides a range of high-definition wallpapers for phones.

Who Is Marques Brownlee?

Marques Brownlee is a YouTuber who reviews gadgets; Brownlee has built a loyal following of fans who trust him to tell the truth about the latest tech trends and products.

Brownlee’s brand is built on authenticity, and his scathingly honest videos having sparked controversy in the past, with critics arguing that his reviews have the power to sink new products before they have the chance to improve.

Brownlee famously described Fisker's EV as " the worst car I've ever reviewed ," and AI-powered wearable Humane AI pin as “ the worst product I've ever reviewed... for now .”

However, Brownlee is generally a tech optimist who often expresses excitement for new products and potential tech trends. Brownlee wasn’t the only influencer who gave these products negative reviews, and his assessment was viewed by fans as tough but fair.

When Brownlee launched his own app, Panels, his fans had high expectations, hoping that Brownlee had held his own product to the same standards.

What Happened With Marques Brownlee’s ‘Panels’ App?

Critics tore into Brownlee’s app the moment it was released, with many commentators baffled at the idea of a subscription-based wallpaper app.

For $12 per month, Panels provides a range of high-definition wallpapers for phones, a hefty price tag for something that has always been freely available online.

Commentators noted that the app was overpriced, infested with intrusive ads, and collected an excessive amount of user data. Brownlee responded to many of the criticisms, but the wave of backlash quickly turned into a tsunami.

Beyond the legitimate criticism, there was more than a hint of schadenfreude from many of the more critical comments, with some seeming to relish in Brownlee’s perceived downfall.

Many of the comments contrasted Brownlee’s ability to take down glitchy, underwhelming products with his perceived hypocrisy.

Many critics mocked the app’s most underwhelming wallpaper, “Orange,” which was … exactly what one would imagine from the title.

During the height of the backlash, some commentators pointed out that the vitriol had gotten too personal; this was, after all, just a disappointing app.

Others simply had fun making memes .

Brownlee quickly addressed the backlash and described the rush of negative feedback as “pretty dope,” promising to fix the issue of excessive data disclosures.

For some, it was too late, with many commentators suggesting that Brownlee had permanently damaged his reputation, as his brand was built on the perception of authenticity and trust.

Others dismissed the backlash as irrelevant, merely a bump on the road.

Coincidentally, the Panels backlash coincided with the online backlash to Lunchly , a pre-packaged school meal launched by YouTube trio MrBeast, KSI and Logan Paul, which was widely derided as a cash-grab, the three accused of selling junk food to impressionable children.

Brownlee, however, has a very different fanbase from the controversial YouTube trio, and his app seemingly resonated with many of his viewers; at time of writing, Panels was at number 4 on the App Store’s Photos & Video list.
