Udit Narayan was born on 1 December 1955  (age 68 years; as of 2023 ) in the Baisi village of Supaul District, Bihar. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He did his schooling from Shree Public Bindeshawari Secondary School, Rajbiraj, Nepal. Udit finished his SSC from Jageshwar High School, Kunauli, Supaul, Bihar and obtained his intermediate degree from Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Campus, Kathmandu, Nepal. He moved to Mumbai on a musical scholarship for Nepalese through Indian Embassy in Nepal to study classical music at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. There, he was mentored by ‘Pandit Dinkar Kaikini.’

He began his career as a Maithili and Nepali folk singer (staff artist) for Kathmandu Radio in 1970. He made his Bollywood debut as a singer with the song “Mil gaya Mil gaya” from the movie “Unees-Bees” in 1980.

A significant milestone of his career was when he sang all the songs for the movie “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” with Alka Yagnik in 1988. He released his first non-movie Nepalese album “Upahaar” in which, he sang along with his wife, Deepa. He has several solo albums like Bhajan Sangam, Bhajan Vatika, I Love You, Dil Deewana, Yeh Dosti, Love is Life, Jaanam, Jhumka de Jhumka, Sona No Ghadulo, Dhuli Ganga, and Ma Tarini.

Controversy

Udit Narayan was already married to Ranjana Narayan Jha when he got married to his second wife Deepa in 1985. Years later, Ranjana filed a case against the singer asking him to accord her the status of his wife. Later, an agreement was signed between Ranjana and Udit accepting each other as “husband and wife.” The agreement stated that it would give equal rights ‘of a wife’ to Ranjana and would not affect the status of his other wife Deepa and their son.

Udit Narayan

Udit Narayan is one of the most popular singers of the Hindi film industry. This multi talented playback singer has sung in numerous films and in many different languages. This great singer was born in a small village named Bharadah in Nepal. His initial years were full of struggles and he started off his career with a brief stint with the Nepal Radio. He used to sing Maithili, Nepali and Bhojpuri songs during the 1970's. By the end of the 70's he moved to Bombay to pursue music under scholarship. He received training in Indian classical music for six years in Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. Check out his life history with this short biography on Udit Narayanan. 

In the year 1980, he got his break to sing in a Hindi film when music director Rajesh Roshan offered him to sing in the movie Unees Bees. It was big thing for Udit, as he got an opportunity to sing with his mentor, the great Mohammed Rafi. He was noticed but his real big break came in the year 1988. He sang a very famous song "Papa Kehte Hain" from the movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which went on to become that year's biggest hit. This song gave him instant stardom and he went on to bag his first Filmfare award. 

This movie was also the launch pad of actors Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla and female playback singer Alka Yagnik. After the huge success of this movie, Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik sang for movies like Dil and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, which went on to become huge hits. Udit Narayan also tried his hand at acting and did some Nepali movies like Kusume Rumal and Pirati, which were not much successful. But he sang in some of the most famous Nepali movies and became a famous singer in Nepal. 

Though Udit Narayan was gaining much popularity, he got overshadowed by Kumar Sanu, who another famous Indian playback singer. For five years, though he was nominated in the Best Male Playback singer category, it was Kumar Sanu who finally won. In the year 1995, his career had a turning point when he sang the hit song "Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna" for the movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaaenge. The song went on to become a huge hit and won accolades from one and all. He won the Filmfare award for the Best Male Playback singer that year. He won his third Filmfare award the next year itself for the song "Pardesi" from the movie Raja Hindustani. 

Udit Narayan is one of the most acclaimed singers of the present generation and has been praised by senior and established singers and composers for his original style and voice quality. He is the onscreen voice of the three major superstars of Indian cinema namely Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. Many acclaimed music directors prefer to work with him since he is able to gel with almost everyone and give the exact feel to the song.

He is one of the top choices of acclaimed music directors like A.R. Rahman, Nadeem Shravan, Rajesh Roshan, Shankar Mahadevan, etc. He is also a hit with major directors like Yash Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Karan Johar. Narayan was born in a ethnic Maithil Brahmin family whose nationality is Nepalese.Narayan studied at Jageshwar High School, Kunauli, Supaul, Bihar, India, where he finished his SSC and later obtained his intermediate degree from Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal. His father Harekrishna Jha was a farmer and his mother Bhuvneshwari Devi was a folk singer who encouraged his career.

In the year 1984 he was married to first wife Ranjana Jha and eventually got seperated due to personal disputes between the couple. In the year 1985 he married his second wife Deepa Ghatraj.He has one son Aditya Narayan.

Narayan began his career in 1970 as a Maithili folk singer for Nepali Radio which includes popular songs in Maithili and Nepali. He started his Bollywood career in 1980 when he was noticed by music director Rajesh Roshan, who asked Narayan to sing for the Hindi film Unees-Bees for the song “Mil Gaya Mil gaya”.Narayan was given the opportunity to sing with Mohammed Rafi who was Narayan’s inspiration. His first duet was in the film Sannata. Soon after, Narayan sang for a number of other films, including Bade Dil Wala in 1983, where he sang a duet with senior singer Lata Mangeshkar, composed by senior music director R. D. Burman.
