Water is a chemical compound that exists as a liquid in the body. It is a crucial part of the body systems and has even been called ‘the liquid of life.’

Water has been known to prevent a number of illnesses hence restoring ones health. Most of these illnesses are; cancer of the colon, breast and the lungs. Drinking water may not necessarily eliminate the possibility of getting these cancers; it simply reduces the probability of their occurrence.

Due to the crucial role played by water, lack of it causes some immediate symptoms. First of all, one experiences headaches and fatigue. Subsequently, one may loose part of their memory and may have trouble remembering small things. Water ensures that one does not have trouble concentrating because it is said that absence of water reduces one’s concentration span. (Kent, 1997)

Constipation is prevented by water. This is done through easing digestion by providing a solvent in which the toxins can dissolve.

Water is said to be the perfect moisturizer for our skin and prevents patchiness. It is also used to control one’s emotions.

Water has numerous bodily functions. Perhaps its most important is the fact that it is a constituent of most cells, organs and systems in the body. It is a fact that water makes up about 90% of the lungs, over ninety percent of the brain and about eighty percent of blood. There are plenty of fluids in the body that mainly consist of water; one of these is saliva.

Water is used to protect the interior organs from external shock. One such organ is the heart. In line with this role, water makes up most of the fluid that is found in between joints, as such, it is used as a lubricant to ease bodily movements.

Transportation in the body is mainly done by water. It transports waste products from their areas of production such as the kidneys to the external environment. It therefore gets rid of toxins from the body. Water also transports oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body that are in need of it. Nutrients are also transported by water from the digestive system to muscles and other body parts in need of it.

Temperature regulation is another very important function of water. It acts as a kind of thermostat in the body. When body temperature exceeds optimum levels, the body sweats. Sweat mainly consists of water which normally leaves with a lot of heat when it evaporates thus cooling the body. This property of water is called high latent heat of vaporization.

Water is used for detoxification purposes by getting rid of wastes that are carried by the intestinal tract. As such it ensures that the body is in great health.

Lack of water in the body causes thirst. This is incase the amount of water under consideration is a small amount. The thirst then graduates to a more uncomfortable symptom; fatigue. One’s body feels restless and inactive. Eventually, headaches set in as the brain is now complaining. If the condition persists, then dizziness sets in and eventually one complains of feeling heaviness in their head. These are all signs of dehydration.

When the body is constantly denied access to water, reverse osmosis occurs. Instead of water leaving the body and getting filtered into the brain cells, the opposite occurs. Water leaves the cells and enters the system. This means that the body develops an elevated blood pressure since it is going against the norm. High blood pressure can be disastrous if allowed to continue without checking it.

There are some emotional manifestations of a lack of water in the body. One who has not had a lot of water is normally quite irritable and moody. They are quick to anger and are full of impatience.

Constant dehydration also causes a number of illnesses that may be fatal. Some of these include; weak immunity, hypertension and the very dangerous diabetes.

Sodium is mostly obtained from salt which is a compound made of both sodium and chlorine. It is put to use in the nervous systems during transportation of a message from one part of the body to another or from the external environment to the body. These messages may include; pain, heat and electric shock. There is a need for proper electrolyte balance within the body for any stimulant to be recorded well by the body.

Potassium is used to control the sodium balance within the body to ensure that metabolic systems function well. Chlorine serves to neutralize sodium because it is negatively charged while sodium is a positively charged ion. The two complement each other and thus chlorine maintains adequate balance in the body.

There’s a hormone in the body that is responsible for absorption of water back from the kidneys. It is called vasopressin. This hormone helps the body to maintain a balance of water thus preventing excessive loss. Consumption of alcohol causes a depression of Vasopressin meaning that plenty of water will not be reabsorbed and most of it will go to waste as urine. (Ellen, 1980)

Alcohol also causes severe loss in nutrients that are quite important to the body. These nutrients include; calcium, zinc, potassium and sodium. This in turn affects the body’s nervous system and balance of fluids.

It causes prolonged dehydration; this was shown in a research where people’s blood was tested. Most of them were found to have thicker blood especially due to frequent urination.

Caffeine also lowers levels of hydration. This happens by dieresis which is the process of excess absorption of water from blood in the kidneys. Caffeine also inhibits the reabsorption of sodium hence interrupting the hydration process.

The first step is to drink plenty of water. Doctors advise us to take about 8 glasses of water per day. This will ensure proper physical and psychological health.

One should avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks. This is because the latter mentioned substances enhance the loss of water through the kidneys and must be kept at a minimum or avoided altogether (Barbara, 2004).

If one engages in heavy activities, then one should not wear heavy clothes because they increase the rate at which a body is sweating. The more one sweats, the more the fluid they loose from the body and the more the chances of dehydration.

There are some tell – tale signs that come with hydration. Individuals must learn to recognize them as soon as possible and to do something about them. These include; patchy or dry lips, thick urine, heavy eyes and mild headaches.

Individuals must also protect themselves from excessive sunshine which brings about sweatiness hence water loss from the body. They can do this by standing under a shade when exposed.

Nutritious drinks like pure vegetable juice or milk or its substitutes are also excellent choices.

Drinking more is advised when exercising or being active in hot weather because these activities cause increased sweating. However, doctors normally advise women to drink approximately 9 cups of fluid each day and males approximately 13 cups.

Urinating more frequently can be caused by some illnesses, such as diabetes or chronic renal disease, as well as some medications. As a result, individuals suffering from these conditions should focus on consuming more water. 13

Drinking Water Is at Risk in Parts of Long Island, Study Finds

The supply of drinking water for parts of Long Island is under threat, according to a new federal report .

The report found that the groundwater in some coastal areas of Nassau County, a major suburb of New York City, is increasingly turning salty. That shift, called saltwater intrusion, is the result of decades of pumping fresh water out of wells for homes and irrigation, creating space for saltwater from the ocean to seep into the underground aquifers once filled with freshwater.

The change could take generations to reverse, even if pumping stopped altogether, according to the report. And it could force coastal areas — including Long Beach, Great Neck and Oyster Bay — to look for new supplies of drinking water, possibly by digging wells further inland, which could put new pressure on those places as well.

Those places “are at that point of the spear,” said Frederick Stumm, a research hydrologist at the U.S. Geological Survey and the report’s lead author. “They’re the most vulnerable communities right now to intrusion.”

The findings in Long Island come as the United States faces a groundwater crisis. In an investigation last year, The New York Times examined data for tens of thousands of wells around the country. In almost half those sites, the amount of groundwater had declined significantly over the past 40 years.

NEW YORK (AP) — A U.S. government report expected to stir debate concluded that fluoride in drinking water at twice the recommended limit is linked with lower IQ in children.

The report, based on an analysis of previously published research, marks the first time a federal agency has determined — “with moderate confidence” — that there is a link between higher levels of fluoride exposure and lower IQ in kids. While the report was not designed to evaluate the health effects of fluoride in drinking water alone, it is a striking acknowledgment of a potential neurological risk from high levels of fluoride.

Fluoride strengthens teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear , according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water has long been considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the last century.

“I think this (report) is crucial in our understanding” of this risk, said Ashley Malin, a University of Florida researcher who has studied the effect of higher fluoride levels in pregnant women on their children. She called it the most rigorously conducted report of its kind.

The long-awaited report released Wednesday comes from the National Toxicology Program, part of the Department of Health and Human Services. It summarizes a review of studies, conducted in Canada, China, India, Iran, Pakistan, and Mexico, that concludes that drinking water containing more than 1.5 milligrams of fluoride per liter is consistently associated with lower IQs in kids.

The report did not try to quantify exactly how many IQ points might be lost at different levels of fluoride exposure. But some of the studies reviewed in the report suggested IQ was 2 to 5 points lower in children who’d had higher exposures.

Since 2015, federal health officials have recommended a fluoridation level of 0.7 milligrams per liter of water, and for five decades before the recommended upper range was 1.2. The World Health Organization has set a safe limit for fluoride in drinking water of 1.5.

The report said that about 0.6% of the U.S. population — about 1.9 million people — are on water systems with naturally occurring fluoride levels of 1.5 milligrams or higher.

“The findings from this report raise the questions about how these people can be protected and what makes the most sense,” Malin said.

The 324-page report did not reach a conclusion about the risks of lower levels of fluoride, saying more study is needed. It also did not answer what high levels of fluoride might do to adults.

The American Dental Association, which champions water fluoridation, had been critical of earlier versions of the new analysis and Malin’s research. Asked for comment, a spokeswoman late Wednesday afternoon emailed that the organization’s experts were still reviewing the report.

Fluoride is a mineral that exists naturally in water and soil. About 80 years ago, scientists discovered that people whose water supplies naturally had more fluoride also had fewer cavities, triggering a push to get more Americans to use fluoride for better dental health.

In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first U.S. city to start adding fluoride to tap water. In 1950, federal officials endorsed water fluoridation to prevent tooth decay, and continued to promote it even after fluoride toothpaste brands hit the market several years later. Though fluoride can come from a number of sources, drinking water is the main source for Americans, researchers say.

Officials lowered their recommendation for drinking water fluoride levels in 2015 to address a tooth condition called fluorosis, that can cause splotches on teeth and was becoming more common in U.S. kids.

Separately, the Environmental Protection Agency has maintained a longstanding requirement that water systems cannot have more than 4 milligrams of fluoride per liter. That standard is designed to prevent skeletal fluorosis, a potentially crippling disorder which causes weaker bones, stiffness and pain.

But more and more studies have increasingly pointed to a different problem, suggesting a link between higher levels of fluoride and brain development. Researchers wondered about the impact on developing fetuses and very young children who might ingest water with baby formula. Studies in animals showed fluoride could impact neurochemistry cell function in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, executive function and behavior.

In 2006, the National Research Council, a private nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., said limited evidence from China pointed to neurological effects in people exposed to high levels of fluoride. It called for more research into the effect of fluoride on intelligence.

After more research continued to raise questions, the National Toxicology Program in 2016 started working on a review of the available studies that could provide guidance on whether new fluoride-limiting measures were needed.

There were earlier drafts but the final document has repeatedly been held up. At one point, a committee of experts said available research did not support an earlier draft’s conclusions.

“Since fluoride is such an important topic to the public and to public health officials, it was imperative that we made every effort to get the science right,” said Rick Woychik, director of the National Toxicology Program, in a statement.

Malin said it makes sense for pregnant women to lower their fluoride intake, not only from water but also from certain types of tea. It might also make sense to have policy discussions about whether to require fluoride-content on beverage labels, she said.

How much is too much fluoride in drinking water? New report raises questions

A federal report this week linked high levels of fluoride in other countries to lower IQs in children, adding new evidence in the long-simmering debate over adding fluoride to public drinking water systems.

The report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Toxicity Program concluded with "moderate confidence" that a collection of non-U.S. studies associated higher levels of fluoride with lower IQ in children. The report evaluated a collection of previous studies completed on populations in Canada, China, India, Iran, Pakistan and Mexico.

The review examined total fluoride exposure from all sources, so it did not solely measure health effects of drinking fluoridated water. But experts say it will likely generate debate among anti-fluoride groups who are pushing for ballot measures and other actions to ban public water fluoridation in local communities.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named public water fluoridation as one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th Century. The practice of adding small amounts of fluoride to public drinking water to strengthen teeth is endorsed by the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The organizations point to research that found fluoridated water reduces tooth decay by 25% in children and adults.

"Decades of research and practical experience indicate that fluoride is safe and beneficial to oral health," said Linda Edgar, president of the American Dental Association.

How much fluoride is safe?

Drinking water with more than 1.5 milligrams of fluoride per liter was "consistently associated with lower IQ in children," the report said. It did not say how much IQ might be lowered in children who drink water with fluoride levels that exceed that amount. The report also did not say whether adults could be affected by high levels of fluoride.

The U.S. Public Health Service recommends public water systems contain a fluoride level of .7 milligrams per liter of water. The World Health Organization's recommended limit for fluoride in drinking water in 1.5 milligrams per liter.

What do the experts say?

ADA representatives said the vast majority of Americans should not be alarmed by the report. Federal public health agencies recommend public water systems be calibrated to less than half the fluoride levels which this research links to lower IQ in children.

"For the average person, there is no concern based upon the findings from this review," said Howard Pollick, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

But Pollick, a fluoride expert with the ADA, said he is concerned about a small percentage of Americans who live in communities served by water systems that contain too much fluoride.

As of 2020, about 1.9 million Americans received drinking water from a community water system with fluoride levels of at least 1.5 milligrams per liter, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By that measure, the report suggest children in those communities might be at risk.

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends families with young children don't drink water from community systems with fluoride levels that exceed 2 milligrams per liter. The EPA standard is meant to protect kids from severe dental fluorosis, which can weaken or discolor teeth. Water providers are required to notify people in communities where fluoride levels exceed the threshold.

"The question now is whether (the EPA's threshold) should perhaps be lowered to 1.5," Pollick said.

Could this spur more communities to ditch fluoridated water?

Groups that have long been critical of potential developmental and cognitive effects of public water fluoridation cheered the report.

David Kennedy, a retired dentist and treasurer of the Preventative Dental Health Association, said the report shows too much fluoride can be harmful to children's development.

"It does not belong in our food, our water or our toothpaste," Kennedy said.

Fluoride Action Network, which seeks to end water fluoridation, said the number of Americans served by community water systems with fluoridated water dropped from 74.6% in 2012 to 72.7% in 2020. More than 1,400 communities stopped adding fluoridation chemicals to their water systems from 2010 through 2020, the network said.

Pollick said he is worried city councils and other local elected leaders might face pressure from constituents. He noted the report does not prove fluoride causes lower IQ levels, and he noted the report authors had "moderate confidence" in the evidence.

"Whenever there's a report that comes out like this, we understand that people may get concerned," Pollick said.

Investigation of Cyanobacteria-Hosted Antibiotic Resistance in Drinking Water Sources from a Public Health Perspective

Cyanobacterial blooms are intensifying worldwide due to eutrophication and climate change. While traditionally, the focus has been on cyanotoxins, recent studies suggest a potential link between cyanobacteria and antibiotic resistance (AR), including hosting AR genes (ARGs) or promoting gene transfer. However, the role of cyanobacteria as ARG hosts and their contribution to environmental AR in drinking water sources remains largely unexplored. In this study, we examined cyanobacteria as ARG hosts within the broader microbiome context.  Samples of drinking water sources were collected from Lake Erie and Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM) between May and October 2022, both sites afflicted historically by blooms. Cyanobacterial genes and ARGs were quantified with DropletDigital™ PCR (ddPCR), while microcystin concentrations were quantified with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was employed to analyze the microbiome, with ARGs annotated using DeepARG and Resistance Gene Identifier. Although the alpha diversity and composition of the microbial communities were similar at both locations, the ddPCR and sequencing revealed elevated levels of Microcystis in Lake Erie and Planktothrix in GLSM. The ELISA results showed high microcystin concentrations in GLSM. Cyanobacteria were identified as potential hosts for ARGs, including genes such as rpoB2 and arlR. However, upon further examination, these genes are likely annotated on housekeeping genes and are considered false positives spurious hits. In addition, qac and OXA genes were also annotated, consistent with previous findings on NCBI BLAST in Cyanobacteria. Although cyanobacteria do not appear to be significant contributors to the resistome in these contexts, they may confer some antibiotic resistance. This study underscores the importance of continued monitoring of cyanobacteria within the broader microbiome and resistome, especially in drinking water sources with high contamination levels. Understanding the potential interactions and implications of such contaminants for drinking water is crucial for safeguarding public health.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $26 Million in Grants to Protect Children from Lead in Drinking Water at Schools and Childcare Facilities

WASHINGTON – Today, August 22, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $26 million in funding to protect children from lead in drinking water at schools and childcare facilities. This grant funding will be used by 55 states and territories and the District of Columbia to reduce lead exposure where children learn and play while advancing the goals of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan.

“The science is clear: There is no safe level of exposure to lead,” said Acting Assistant Administrator for Water Bruno Pigott . “As part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda, this $26 million will help protect our children from the harmful impacts of lead. EPA is also investing $15 billion under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to remove lead pipes and is providing technical assistance to communities to help them develop and implement lead pipe replacement projects.”

In children, lead can severely harm mental and physical development, slowing down learning, and irreversibly damaging the brain. In adults, lead can cause increased blood pressure, heart disease, decreased kidney function, and cancer.

The funding announced today was authorized by the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act and is provided to states, the District of Columbia, and participating territories as grants for lead testing and remediation in schools and childcare facilities. Since 2019, the Voluntary School and Childcare Lead Testing and Reduction Grant has provided over $150 million in funding to conduct testing and removal of lead sources in drinking water in schools and childcare facilities across the U.S.

The grant program requires recipients to use the 3Ts – Training, Testing and Taking Action – to reduce lead in drinking water. The 3Ts Program provides valuable resources for states, territories, and Tribes to take action on lead and protect children in early care and educational settings. Learn more about the 3Ts Program .

EPA is also advancing its Get the Lead Out (GLO) initiative, which is partnering with underserved communities nationwide to provide the technical assistance they need to identify and remove lead service lines. GLO is specifically helping participating communities identify lead services lines, develop replacement plans, and apply for funding to get the lead out. Communities seeking to access GLO Initiative resources can request assistance by completing the  WaterTA request form  on  EPA’s WaterTA website .

The Biden-Harris Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law dedicated an unprecedented $15 billion to removing lead from drinking water. This funding can be used to deliver on the White House's Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan by encouraging federal, state, and local governments to use every tool to deliver clean drinking water, replace lead pipes, and remediate lead paint. It is especially critical to make improvements to places where children spend significant time such as schools, childcare centers, family childcare centers, preschools, and Head Start programs.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law builds on successful programs like the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act’s Grant Programs to bring more benefits to communities across the country.

Impacts of hydrodynamic disturbance on black blooms: An in-situ study in Lake Taihu

The occurrence of black blooms, a kind of black water phenomenon, mostly formed by the decomposition of cyanobacterial blooms poses a threat to both drinking water supplies and the survival of aquatic organisms. Meteorological and hydrological conditions play a crucial role in their formation, while the specific impact of hydrodynamic disturbances on the black blooms remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate in depth the impact of hydrodynamic disturbances on the formation and development of black blooms, as well as their effects on the microbiota in surface sediments during the process. During the occurrence of black blooms in Lake Taihu, in-situ water and surface sediment samples were collected. By combining studies of the changes in water quality and microbial communities, the potential driving mechanisms of hydrodynamic disturbances were analyzed. The results indicate that during the outbreak stage (MS), hydrodynamic disturbances drove the release of anaerobic byproducts in sediments (NH 4 + -N ≥ 0.5 mg/L, TN ≥ 2.03 mg/L, TP ≥ 0.15 mg/L), and varying levels of hydrodynamic disturbance led to significant differences in microbial communities (ANOSIM, R = 0.477, p < 0.05). This influenced the abundance of microorganisms with carbon and sulfur cycling functions in sediments, where stronger hydrodynamics promoted the coupling of carbon mineralization and fermentation processes, while weaker hydrodynamic disturbances facilitated the coupling of carbon mineralization and sulfate reduction processes. Additionally, hydrodynamic disturbances influenced the potential functions of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in sediments, altering the interactions between SRB and other microorganisms. This study, for the first time, investigated the impact of hydrodynamics on the formation of black blooms from the perspective of their interaction with microorganisms. These findings broaden our understanding of the significance of hydrodynamic disturbances during black bloom occurrences and contribute to our ability to predict the formation of black blooms through modeling.
