International Veterinary Nurses and Technicians Association

The ivnta is an association of member countries which seeks to foster and promote links with veterinary nursing and technician staff worldwide via communication and co-operation..

Many overseas veterinary nurses travel and work in Canada. The most important things to be aware of are that:

Registered Veterinary Technicians/Technologists (RVT) are regulated by province, and credentialing requirements and permitted tasks vary. Many provinces require graduation from a program accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) or by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) and successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) for minimum credentialing. Provinces may have additional requirements to become a RVT.

Visitors from most other countries will require a work permit to work in Canada.

What national veterinary nursing qualifications are available?

There is one nationally recognised animal health/veterinary technician qualification available in Canada:

Animal Health/Veterinary Technician/Technology Diploma (2 or 3 year)

As of May, 2016 there are currently 17 CVMA accredited AHT/VT programs and 11 OAVT accredited programs in Ontario. Those with the above diploma qualify to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) to qualify for credentialing.

Credential governance of veterinary technicians/technologists is instituted at the provincial level, and are of variable status.

No credentialing – There is no regulation by private or governmental entities. 

Voluntary credentialing – Private organizations, such as the state veterinary technician association has instituted voluntary credentialing, scope of practice, and enforce maintenance requirements.

Compulsory credentialing – A governmental agency governs the credentials and dictates the scope of practice through legislated practice acts.

Those who are in the process of meeting or completing the required credentials are typically termed Veterinary Technicians/Technologists or VT.

Those with completed credentialing are termed Registered Veterinary Technicians / Technologists (RVT).

The term technician and technologists is utilized depending on the province, there is no distinguishable difference between them.

Do I need to hold the credential (RVT – Registered Veterinary Technician/Technologist) to be able to work as a veterinary technician?

This varies by province. In provinces that have written title protection for veterinary technicians in the practice act, the credential is required to practice as a veterinary technician and to perform tasks as outlined in the province’s practice act.

In provinces that lack formal legislation or by-laws regarding veterinary technicians in the practice act, a non-credentialed (VT or AHT) individual can perform the same job task as a credentialed veterinary technician (RVT).

Will my overseas veterinary nursing qualification be recognised?

Recognition of overseas qualifications vary by province and the language of the practice act. Some provinces will grant reciprocity in credentialing, with most requiring a passing score of the VTNE. Some provinces specify the need for graduation from an CVMA/AVMA accredited program, thereby preventing transferring of overseas qualifications.

Checking with the province’s veterinary medical board for reciprocity policies is recommended.

How do I find work as a veterinary nurse?

Employment opportunities for veterinary nurses can be found in a number of ways; advertisements in newspapers, employment section of the provincial VT association or RVTTC websites, veterinary employment companies, classified sections in veterinary magazines / journals and word of mouth. Alternatively, you can deliver your resume to veterinary clinics to hold on file in case any opportunities arise.

How do I find out about pay and working conditions?

In the first instance, this information should be available through your employer. You and your employer will need to negotiate a contract and a job description for your employment (the job description is often included as part of the contract). You should receive a summary of your pay and deductions every pay day.

The Canada, Statistics Canada periodically publishes census information of professions.

http://www5.statcan.gc.ca

Is there a national association for veterinary nurses?

Yes, the Registered Veterinary Technologists & Technicians of Canada (RVTTC) / Technologues et techniciens vétérinaires agréés du Canada (TTVAC) is the national body for veterinary technician/technologists in Canada. See www.rvttcanada.ca  for more information.

Can I be a registered / listed veterinary nurse if I have an overseas qualification?

The requirement varies from province to province, and each province’s credentialing body should be contacted for the most up-to-date information. The information on the credentialing organization for specific provinces can be obtained by contacting the provincial associations. Contact information can be found at http://rvttcanada.ca/provincial-associations/

What are the immigration requirements to work as a veterinary nurse?    In order to work in Canada international visitors will require a work permit.

Contact your local Canadian Embassy or visit the Canadian Immigration and Citizenship Services at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/ for more information.

Meet the Veterinary Teaching Hospital team: Nina Karn

Nina with a young Bloodhound.

Nina’s journey in veterinary medicine began at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom in Washington, where she earned her associate’s degree in veterinary technology and graduated in 2007. Her commitment to excellence is evident through her certifications, including RECOVER CPR and Fear Free Certification. She has twice been awarded the Richard Westcott Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, which is presented to veterinary technicians or staff at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital who played an important role in teaching fourth-year students.

Originally from the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, Nina now calls Moscow, Idaho, home, where she lives with her family, including her loving husband, whom she says is “her biggest fan.” She is the proud mother of three amazing daughters, and the family also includes Cami, an 11.5-year-old Aussie mix.

What is your typical day like at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital?

My typical day begins at 7 a.m. When I get here, I make sure all of our appointments have been scheduled for their radiology appointments and that anesthesia requests have been submitted. These usually happen on Monday and Wednesday. During appointments, I am available to our fourth-year veterinary students to help with blood draws, IV catheters, restraint, and sedation. Once the receiving day is done I will set up for surgeries for the following day and make sure all the equipment that is needed is available and ready. Mondays are also reserved for any emergency transfers that may need surgery on the same day. I help make sure all the paperwork is completed. Tuesday and Thursday are our surgery days. I make sure that the patient has been checked into our electronic medical record system, get them to anesthesia on time, and help anesthesia to get them premedicated, induced, and prepped for surgery in a timely manner. Once they are in surgery, I circulate throughout all the ORs to ensure that our surgeons have everything they need. I also help turn ORs over for the next patients when it is time.  I also do a lot of communication with clients prior to them coming for their appointments.

What is your favorite surgery?

My favorite surgeries are the minimally invasive ones. Being able to be a part of such a complicated surgery which normally would require several days hospitalization but now thanks to smaller incisions they recover so much quicker with much less pain.

What made you want to work in veterinary medicine?

I have always wanted to work with animals, ever since I was a little girl. I was always finding animals to play with, including toads. In kindergarten we had a veterinarian come talk to us about jobs and I went home that day and told my mom that’s what I was going to do. My trajectory never changed. I started volunteering at a veterinary hospital during my junior year of high school and got hired during my senior year. I worked up until tech school.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?

I love my job; I love being able to teach our fourth-year veterinary students about soft tissue diseases and new restraint techniques. They are so eager to learn and want to learn as much as they can before going out into practice. My surgery residents are like my own kids. I want to see them succeed and enjoy helping them along the way. I love my patients; they make the job what it is. I enjoy seeing patients come in with a problem and leave fixed. It’s so rewarding to see them feel better after surgery.

Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years?

I would love to be able to get my specialty certification in surgery. I know I will still be here at WSU. I have no current plans to move.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, mushrooming, berry picking, and hiking. It is my mental recharging time. I also love spending time with my family.

Nina with her family and dog along the bank of a mountain river.

What advice would you give to pet owners?

The biggest advice I would give to owners is to seek treatment early. There are so many diseases that when treated early can have a much better outcome. Also get insurance when they are young.

Considering a job offer in Moscow

barbarat

Hi everyone I am just recently separated from my husband and part of moving on is finding a job and making new friends. I have been offered a live in nanny position in Moscow which pays pretty well but I am concerned with how I will cope there with no Russian. Any advise and tips would be much appreciated before I make a decision. I am a little shy at first so will this make it hard for me to make friends? I am so used to being part of a couple that everything feels very daunting. Thanks for you help

Armand

Barbara, you need to be careful with some of the nanny jobs, word of warning. I know some people in this role and all is well but my advice to you would be to join a school here where the money will be less but the network will be wider and many places can offer you an apartment, try for a 6 month contract so you are not locked in, there is a lot of work for native English speakers here, do a CELTA course and you will meet all sorts of people here. The language can be a challenge so make the effort to learn some Russian, the natives will thank you for it, udacha (good luck)
