Prezi storyboarding template

Recently, I had an inquiry from a Non-Profit around creating Prezis that would act as standalone training videos. I explained to them that the typical process is as follows:

1. Select a central metaphor (the best Prezis have a central image you zoom in and out of) 2. Write the voice-over script 3. Decide on a visual theme: standard Prezi or something else? 4. Create visuals for the theme, could be in PowerPoint or Illustrator 5. Create a storyboard for the visuals created (can be done in tandem with step 4) 6. Create your visual Prezi 7. Record your script to sync with your Prezi 8. Distribute to one and all

As part of that project, I created a storyboard for them. I share that storyboard with you and the Slideshare Universe:

All of our favorite cartoons and movies start the same way, with a few sketches on a storyboard. It helps to create a visual narrative that guides the development of the story and enables effective presentation. Storytelling is a vital aspect of any presentation, and storyboarding is an essential storytelling tool that ensures your presentation is engaging and coherent. It helps you craft a compelling narrative in graphic form. By creating a storyboard, you lay the foundation for your PowerPoint, making it easier to design and communicate your ideas effectively.

What is the history of storyboarding?

Storyboards are a blueprint for visualizing and representing your story and are meant to guide you as you create it. The concept of storyboarding was introduced by Walt Disney and his team in the 1920s. When creating his classic Mickey Mouse cartoons, they would sketch out individual scenes and pin them onto bulletin boards, allowing for easier review and revision of the storyline.

And although preparing a PowerPoint is unlike animating Mickey Mouse, the need for planning and conceptualizing remains the same. Storyboarding can help you identify what kind of story you want to tell and how to incorporate visuals to enhance your message. With storyboarding, you can map out the structure and flow of your presentation, saving you time when designing your slides.

Think of a storyboard as a sketchpad where you can write down all your ideas in one place. This “brain dump” allows you to explore different approaches and identify what works and what doesn’t. By listing everything, you can edit, replace, or remove elements that don’t add value to your presentation, and refine your story until it’s clear, concise, and compelling.

How do you storyboard your presentation?

Storyboarding is commonly associated with film and animation, but it can also be a powerful tool for planning presentations. When creating a presentation, you’re essentially telling a story using visual aids. Storyboarding can help you organize your thoughts and plan out the structure of your presentation, ensuring that your visual aids enhance your message and engage your audience. Here’s how you can storyboard your presentation:

Storyboard idea

Set up your storyboard

Start with a new PowerPoint document and insert enough slides to cover all the headlines and ideas you want to cover. Don’t worry about length right at this stage; you will later cut any irrelevant or tedious slides.

Decide on your arc

Define the main message or idea you want to share, and think about the stages it takes to reach that idea. The arc of the narrative becomes easier to understand when you split it into chapters. Split your narrative into chapters and use the Notes feature to add more ideas and notes that can help you.

Add a frame for each idea

Typically, one idea should be presented per slide. As you storyboard, add frames for each of your ideas and flesh them out so you can see the entire storyline laid out. Label them to keep track of them.

Rearrange the slides

Once all your ideas are down, step back and look at the timeline you’ve created. This will help you understand the story’s flow better and rearrange it accordingly. Should the presentation reach the key ideas sooner? Does the narrative make sense? Should certain points be shifted to be more logical?

Get rid of the weak parts

With the entire presentation outline in front of you, you can gain some perspective on what should or shouldn’t make the final cut. Identify the weak sections and start removing any useless parts. Anything that doesn’t serve the main message is unnecessary baggage. Cut down the presentation to the essential elements that best support your message.

Why should you create presentation storyboards with PowerPoint?

Presentation design involves a blend of creativity, planning, and effective storytelling. To optimize your presentation development process and achieve your goals, utilizing a PowerPoint storyboard can advance and optimize your process. Here is why:

Easy to use

If you regularly make PowerPoints, you are well-versed in the basic features, so making a storyboard should not be too far out of your scope. A presentation storyboard acts as a rough draft for the final product. Using a process similar to making a PowerPoint, you can easily develop a storyboard by creating slides to lay down all your ideas. Then, you can begin experimenting with their structure and flow.

Variety of features

PowerPoint offers many features that  can be handy when creating a presentation storyboard.  From incorporating eye-catching shapes like icons and banners to integrating media elements such as videos, GIFs, and audio, PowerPoint empowers you to infuse life into your mockups. By incorporating these elements into the storyboard, you can get a clear sense of how and where to leverage them effectively.

Easy to customize

Once you’ve added slides to your storyboard, PowerPoint provides effortless customization options. You can edit, rearrange, add, or remove slides with ease. Additionally, PowerPoint enables you to tailor your storyboard by incorporating personalized text, themes, and visual elements, ensuring alignment with your desired content and tone.

You can collaborate with your team

Collaboration is made seamless with PowerPoint’s team-friendly features. If you’re working with a team, you can develop the storyboard collectively using PowerPoint online. can create and share a collaborative link with appropriate editing permissions. This accessibility allows everyone to contribute suggestions, offer feedback, and provide input throughout the presentation storyboard creation process.

Tips for creating a presentation storyboard

A presentation storyboard

Focus on the headlines

Begin by identifying the theme of your presentation. List all the key points and main ideas you want to convey. At this stage, the specific   structure doesn’t matter; you can connect them later. Dedicate a slide to each headline and expand upon your ideas across multiple slides, allowing for a cohesive flow.

Call to action

Review the pieces of your story and determine the core message you want your audience to take away. Rearrange your sections to ensure the most captivating ideas are positioned at the beginning to immediately engage your audience. Ensure that your presentation builds towards a meaningful conclusion, and conclude your storyboard with a compelling call to action that encourages your listeners to take action after the presentation.

Don’t be afraid of non-linear structures

Don’t be afraid to experiment with non-linear storytelling structures. While it may seem unconventional to start with surprising points, it can captivate your audience’s attention. Remember that there are multiple paths to a destination, and sometimes starting backward or taking an unconventional approach can be more effective in explaining complex concepts or capturing interest.

A presentation storyboard serves as the perfect planning tool to develop an engaging narrative. By laying out all your ideas, you gain a fresh perspective on your story. Think of a storyboard as your first draft, allowing you to craft a visually impactful narrative using your slides. It simplifies the presentation design process by enabling you to build a coherent story first and then adapt it to fit your narrative structure. 7 Outstanding Example Presentations Using Prezi

' src=

Prezi is a presentation tool that helps transform lack-luster, static presentations into engaging presentations that tell a story.

Instead of moving slide to slide, like a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, Prezi presentations capture content in a spatial context. Because of this, your audience may be more engaged with your presentation.

If you’ve been using PowerPoint, you can import an existing PowerPoint presentation and transform it into a Prezi.

Let’s take a look at some example presentations using Prezi that demonstrate how this tool can be used to take your presentations to the next level.

1. Prezi Overview

Prezi overview

This Prezi shows the company’s history, some of the people using Prezi, and how to import a PowerPoint and get started with Prezi.

This is a great example of how to effectively use Prezi and also gives you an idea of the features you will find in the program. It does a great job of illustrating Prezi’s story using images , facts and statistics.

By featuring a how-to on importing a PowerPoint file, Prezi highlights one of it’s main selling points.

To close, showing specific examples of people who use Prezi is a great way to show the value Prezi brings to a market that otherwise hasn’t seen much innovation.

2. Obama vs Romney

prezi obama vs romney/

This Prezi states the simple facts about each candidate in the 2012 election. The presentation flows from one segment to the next rather than jumping from slide to slide.

It presents the facts in an understandable way, and because of the format and segmented design, it’s easy to compare the two candidates.

Most successful presentations end in some sort of call to action . Appropriately, this one calls you to vote!

3. Prezi Book – Mastering Prezi for Business Presentations

prezi book mastering prezi for business presentations/

Russel (The Prezenter) Anderson-Williams wrote the book on using Prezi for business presentations (literally!). This is his presentation to promote his book.

In it, he uses embedded video, audio and hyperlinks to tell his story and walks the listener through how to do all these things within Prezi.

The illustrative style of the presentation puts the watcher in the learning seat which goes hand-in-hand with the educational nature of the presentation. Tying the design to the objective of the presentation helps make this Prezi successful.

To conclude the presentation, there are a couple calls to action including clicking on links to purchase the book and signing up for his online Prezi training course.

4. A Presentation on Presentations

prezi copy of presentation on presentations/

In this Prezi about how to effectively make a Prezi, the presenter walks you through the reasons why Prezi’s format is conducive to creating a memorable experience and triggering action among your audience.

It walks you through important aspects of any presentation, like making you feel emotion and telling a story, while also showcasing the templates and features Prezi has available.

The presentation is sprinkled with facts and examples throughout, which adds interest and lends credibility to the presenter.

5. The Magical Theory of Relativity

prezi the magical theory of relativity/

Can Prezi make learning about the theory of relativity fun? See for yourself in this great Prezi created by Petra Marjai.

The Prezi tells the story of how the theory came about and also uses illustrative examples from everyday life to explain the theory.

Aside from great story telling and examples, this Prezi is also a great example because of the simple color palette that is used consistently throughout the presentation.

Another of its successes is good typographic hierarchy. The main points are in large text, while the smaller points are in smaller text – similar to cascading bullet points in a traditional PowerPoint, but much more differentiated and engaging.

6. Red Bull Stratos

Red Bull Stratos

This Prezi on the Red Bull Stratos free-fall stunt was created to tell the story around the stunt. It gives background on the purpose, facts and goals about the process as well as a link to more information. It also utilizes an embedded video and link.

The last screen of the presentation shows the full context of the story in one large view. With longer presentations, it might not be realistic to zoom out and show the whole story in one view, but for a short story like this, it’s a great method to show how all the points relate back to the larger context of the story.

7. Mathematweets

prezi mathematweets/

This last example of a successful Prezi was created by Maria Andersen to illustrate how Twitter can be used in the education system. It uses well-crafted illustrations to go beyond teaching about what Twitter is and how it can be used, to telling the story of how it was used (both successfully and unsuccessfully) in the cyber classroom.

The illustrator uses cartoon people and branches of a tree to ask and answer questions, seamlessly transitioning from point to point and question to question. The branches and people, and the ability to see the entire frame in view at once, shows the correlation and context of the various questions and answers.

A call to action, story telling, and using spatial context to visualize ideas are all key elements that make these presentations successful.

Benefits of using slides for storyboards

create a storyboard with stories

Whether you’re creating a video for educational or marketing purposes, storyboarding can help you plan your content section by section. But there’s more to video storyboarding than just creating a visual outline.

As you plan out each section of your video, you’ll be able to consider the type of content—including text, images, videos, and audio clips—you want to include. That way, you can ensure that everything flows well throughout the video and is easy for viewers to understand. And by importing your presentation slides as your storyboard, it can also quickly provide you with information that can be shown in your video.

Here are just a few benefits of using presentation slides for video storyboards.

Organize your ideas

When creating videos, it’s important to ensure that each scene is purposeful and moves the narrative forward in an easy-to-understand way for the audience. But it can be hard to envision the full video content—especially if you’re starting from scratch with a blank canvas.

That’s why video storyboards are so helpful. As you add video sections and plan out the content for each one, you’ll have a better idea of how your video would look once it’s complete. That way, you can maximize your time editing and perfecting your video to make sure everything flows well from start to finish.

When you’re done building your video with ScreenPal Stories , you’ll be able to quickly export the video and share it on social media or other platforms. It’s easy to get started, and the Stories storyboard creator is available for all paid plans.

Repurpose content

It takes time to create a high-quality, engaging presentation in Google Slides, PowerPoint, or other slide software. You can get more out of your time and effort by quickly repurposing your slide presentation as a video content as well.

When you create a video storyboard in Stories , you can take existing slides or PDF documents and turn them into an engaging visual experience. By importing your presentation slides as a storyboard, you can reuse your pre-existing slide content in a video format to help it appeal to more viewers. Each slide becomes a separate section of your storyboard that you can rearrange or expand on so you can easily plan out and build your video .

When you’re done storyboarding, you can easily export the video as an MP4 or other video format and share it with your audience. It’s a great way to repurpose your slide content and quickly turn it into something new—ensuring that your audience gets the most out of your created visuals.

Save time creating videos

Creating videos can be time-consuming, especially if you’re starting from scratch. But you can use the storyboard view in the Stories tool to quickly import presentation slides and turn them into video sections. You can also customize each section with titles, text, images, videos, audio clips, and more—so you have control over how your video looks.

You can quickly and easily create engaging videos , allowing you more time to focus on enhancing the content with edits and special effects. When you import your presentation slides as a video storyboard, you’ll have a visual map of what your video should look like and content from your slides to use in your video as a starting point. The video creation process will be more efficient because you’ll be able to be sure to include all the essential information in the video and keep your content in order.

Easily collaborate with others

Starting with a storyboard is a fantastic way to collaborate on video creation if you have limited time. You can quickly and easily share the storyboard with other team members and notes or script information so they can easily understand the video concept as help they build each section. You can then review their contributions and make edits to ensure the story is complete and viewers can understand the full message of your video.

Importing your slides as a video storyboard

5 types of videos you can create from slides

Presentation videos are a great way to share information and engage with your audience. From flipped classroom lessons to training videos for businesses , presentation video ideas are versatile and powerful.

Here are just a few ways you can turn presentation slides into powerful videos.

Brand story video

Brand story videos are a great way to showcase your company or organization’s mission, values, and history. You can easily document your brand information using slides, and you may even have this information in a slide presentation format already. Use slides as a storyboard to weave together video clips, narration, quotes, music, images, and text to create an engaging presentation video that conveys the core of your brand or story.

When you’re creating a brand story video, it’s important to make sure the sections of your video storyboard flow smoothly from one another. Incorporate elements such as transitions, text overlays, and creative camera angles to take your brand story video to the next level.

When you do this, your presentation video can become a powerful marketing tool that builds curiosity, broadens awareness, and drives engagement.

Informational video

Have you ever wanted to share facts, figures, and statistics in an engaging way? Informational and fact videos are a great way to do that.

You can create an informational video by including text, images, photos, graphics, and charts from a slide presentation. Using your slides as a storyboard will help you create your video in the most efficient way possible and allows you to easily rearrange sections or add additional elements.

Training videos

Training videos are great to create content for both educators and businesses. Educators can turn presentation slides into step-by-step how-to tutorial videos to easily explain complex topics to their students. Or use presentation slides to quickly create professional development and continuing education videos.

Business professionals can quickly turn their presentation slides into employee training videos, including skill development and HR compliance videos. Business professionals can also repurpose webinar slides as interactive storyboards to create videos or create promotional materials , such as product demo videos. Using a storyboard for training videos can help you create content that is easy to understand and memorable.

Event presentation video

If you’re speaking at a conference or event, it’s common to present your information in slide format. You can easily repurpose your slides and share your information to your audience as a video as well.

You can import your presentation slides as a storyboard that includes your visuals and then add an audio narration for further context. This allows you to share the information with others after the event as well as expand your potential audience. And by starting with a storyboard, it’s easy to rearrange sections or add effects like highlighting, text, music and more to further explain your topic.

Personal introduction video

Introduction videos are a great way to introduce yourself or your coworkers, students, and other types of audiences. With an introduction video, you can showcase key information, visuals, and your personality.

Arrange your information in slides and then import them as a storyboard to quickly and easily start creating your video. The storyboard view can help you organize and build all of the elements of your introduction video, such as photos and video clips, text overlays, music, and more. This will help you create a cohesive video that conveys who you are and what’s important to you.

A great introduction video can be used to increase engagement with prospects, customers, coworkers, and more. You could even collaborate with others and compile personal introductions from many people to form a company “about us” video as well.

These are just a few examples of presentation video ideas that can be created using a storyboard. With the right tools and content, these types of videos can become powerful marketing tools and educational resources for your target audience.

Pierre-Marie Gestas junho 17, 2024

Business people attending an artificial intelligence presentation.

Compreendendo a Inteligência Artificial

Exemplos do mundo real

  • Call to action: Incentive seu público a agir.
