Dr Fatimah Zainudin from the University of Southampton’s management school is looking for 'the "chemistry" that makes an applicant shine out,’ so try and demonstrate your enthusiasm about the course and the buzz you'll get from studying it.

'What we love to see is a passion for the subject itself. If you fall in love with the subject, that’s what will lead to success on the course; it will give you the right chemistry,' she says.

Demonstrate your enthusiasm

If you can demonstrate what's sparked your interest in finance and accounting, that's a good start – but it’s no good just saying you’ve got a passion for it, you have to show it.

If you’re not the kind of person who gets very passionate about things, don’t worry. But do still try to explain what it is that attracts you to studying it. Then back it up with evidence of your relevant skills, knowledge or experiences and show that you understand something about what’s involved. That should solve it.

Finance and accounting personal statement must-haves

• Get the basics right: good communication skills are essential to anyone working in the finance sector, so make sure your statement is well-written. Nobody is asking for a literary masterpiece here, just a well-structured and waffle- and error-free statement.
• Interest in the subject: Sheffield Hallam University is looking for you to demonstrate 'an interest in and awareness of accounting and finance, or some level of practical experience.' Similarly, Bristol is looking for 'interest and commitment to the subject.' This means conveying enthusiasm for studying it and showing that you understand something about it, whether that comes from reading, work experience, or studying relevant topics in your A level, BTEC, or Higher course.
• Business awareness: University of Bath selectors are expecting students to have an interest and aptitude for 'quantitative analysis of business issues.' Demonstrate this with evidence that shows your abilities for applying mathematical skills to the analysis of business problems.
• Beyond the classroom: The University of Bristol is looking for 'intellectual curiosity – reading or research beyond the A level (or equivalent) syllabus.’ This is always good practice in personal statements, provided you then reflect on what you learned from your wider reading or research – they don’t just want a list.
• Relevant outside interests: if you choose to include extra-curricular activities, make sure they are relevant or showcase appropriate personal characteristics, skills, or achievements. Apply the 'so what?' test: if you play the flute or basketball, can you make that relevant to your future success at university, or should other factors take priority in your 47 lines?

Make the most of any experience

If you’ve had some work experience , that’s great. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a couple of weeks spent shadowing an accountant, a couple of hours just talking to one, a part-time job in a financial, retail, or business environment, or a scheme like Young Enterprise. What does matter is that you write about something relevant that you have learned from it. But, as Sheffield Hallam and LSE say on their websites, experience is not essential, so don’t panic if you don’t have any.

Your commitment to studying accounting or finance as an academic subject is usually the key requirement. However, if you can also show that extra ingredient of passion and a glimpse of the ‘chemistry’ that exists between you and the subject, then your application really will stand out.

Business economics and finance degree personal statement example (1a) work experience

Financial decision influences both individuals and organisations and an understanding of finance seems to me to be one of the most important ways in which resources can be generated and managed. Individual decisions of saving or spending, business incentives, even government policy is based on finance. I believe a degree related to finance will help me excel in many different fields of work including accountancy, business, economics and management. Coming from Bangladesh, the same financially deprived Less Economically Developed Country as Dr. Yunus, I have been inspired by his ideas about microfinance. His unconventional approach to lending money to entrepreneurs who were too poor to qualify for a traditional bank loan have motivated me to seek a financial degree so that I can have a career which can make a positive difference in people's lives.

I was fortunate enough to get a summer work experience placement at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, Switzerland. I worked with the finance and budgeting department dealing with the voluntary repatriation of refugees and asylum-seekers to South Sudan which is one of their major operations. I was required to organize and administer staff and budget data and create a large spreadsheet by extracting data from staffing components of different countries. The aim was to analyze current budgeting for 2008 and 2009 and be able to easily identify areas of under or over staffing. I also gained work experience in accounting and finance by working with the finance department at Faith Regen Foundation, a charity organization. Here I learnt about book keeping, organizing petty cash receipts, creating expenditure spread sheets and SAGE software. I have also applied to the American Express bank for a work experience placement during the summer of 2008 to further my understanding of the world of finance.

I currently have a part time job at Barratts working as a Sales Advisor and this has helped me to become more confident and to get experience of working in a team. I have learnt about budgeting to ensure efficiency whilst maintaining profits and about the applications of financial tools in every day life. My job requires me to socialize with all sorts of people from different backgrounds and ages and to handle situations in a professional and mature manner. I believe that this will help me adjust to a university environment.

I feel that my A Levels in Mathematics, Economics and Sociology have given me a sound background for my chosen course. They require the ability to interpret data, both quantitative and qualitative and to be able to solve problems; qualities which I believe will be helpful for university level study. Economics in particular has helped widen my understanding of firms, economies and government policy making and has made me realize the importance of finance in society and how capital may function as an incentive. I really enjoyed studying market systems and the monetary policy. My free time is taken up by horse riding, reading, writing and web design. I volunteer at a disabled riding centre and the satisfaction I feel every time I see a disabled child really enjoying themselves and laughing is enormous. I am currently working towards the '100 Hours Volunteer Reward Scheme'. I enjoy reading and analysing literature and am very keen on creative writing. I write short stories, two of which have been published in a respected teen newspaper. I also took part in the ProShare competition.

I am keen to extend my knowledge, skills and understanding while learning from others and working with them. I feel that university is definitely the experience which will help me to do this. I am aware that the world of finance, business and economics is ever changing and my chosen degree subject will prove to be challenging but I look forward to over coming those challenges.

Please discuss past academic and professional experiences and accomplishments that will help you succeed in the Master of Finance program. Include achievements in finance, math, statistics, and computer sciences, as applicable. 

As an ardent finance student, I have always sought opportunities to develop a solid grounding in the subject.

During my undergraduate, I successfully co-founded a philanthropic long/short Impact Investment Hedge Fund, “Australian Students Asset Management” (ASAM). The fund secured firms like Goldman Sachs to provide pro-bono services and mentorship. In addition, I developed a proprietary ESG algorithm to identify investment opportunities per our social development mandate. As a result, our investments have consistently outperformed our benchmark. Furthermore, I attended two courses at LSE on Alternative Investments and Financial Risk with “A” grades. This involved in-depth exploration of topics like Monte Carlo, Bootstrapping, Financial Modelling and Stratification.

As an Associate at PwC, I created PwC’s first fully automated valuation process. This consisted of using industry-specific valuation templates using Python and VBA for data scraping. This solution saw significant savings for the firm and is now used by PwC throughout the world.

As an analyst with Barclays Capital, a Global Quantitative Hedge Fund, I gained exposure to arbitrage trading strategies by implementing statistical principles like mean reversion, volatility trends and co-integration in Python. This helped me develop successful trading algorithms yielding a highly desirable annualized return of 33%.

Describe your short-term and long-term professional goals. How will our MFin degree help you achieve these goals?

My short-term goal is to return to Australia and establish my own quantitative “for-profit” hedge fund. I will utilize my previous experience co-founding the philanthropic hedge fund, ASAM, to that effect. My long-term goal is to expand this hedge fund’s operations overseas and invest in the North American markets, as they present significant growth opportunities.

At MIT, I am eager to research the implications of current trends in institutional capital flows. This detailed exploration will enhance my understanding of the potential risks of passive investing and provide an edge in building trust with future investors.

As an Analyst at Barclays Capital, I developed event-driven and relative-value trading algorithms using Python. With the MFin, I will create an advanced, intuitive approach to data science problems, enabling the manipulation of alternative data sets to automate trading decisions and executions. The Advanced Analytics and Data Science courses and Analytics Certificate are especially exciting as they will allow me to understand shallow models and train deep neural networks in an economic context. I also hope to improve my technical skills around asset pricing and general dimension reduction techniques and ensemble methods which are critical to forming accurately priced derivatives.

In addition, the school had a dire need for wheelchairs, so I devised a cost-effective design to repurpose old bicycles into wheelchairs that we implemented as a team. My commitment to improving the world through innovation will allow me to contribute actively to MIT’s mission.

Furthermore, my extensive involvement in boxing has enabled me to develop perseverance and increased focus in facing challenges. My first loss was devastating, and I considered giving up the sport, as my goal had been to maintain a perfect record. Ultimately, increasing training intensity, dance classes and the strong support from my team allowed me to win my next match and achieve the Most Improved Fighter award by the Sydney Boxing League.

What is a Personal Financial Statement?

An individual’s financial position at a given point in time

A personal financial statement is a document, or set of documents, that outlines an individual’s financial position at a given point in time. It is usually composed of two sections – a balance sheet section and an income flow section.

Although an individual can use more complex personal financial statements, this article will focus on a simple version. The format outlined in this article is a good starting point for individuals who are new to using personal financial statements to record their personal finances.

The balance sheet part of the personal financial statement lists the individual’s assets and liabilities , just as the balance sheet for a business lists all the assets and liabilities of the business.

The sample personal balance sheet shown above outlines John’s financial position as of August 8, 2017.

As can be seen from the balance sheet, John’s total assets are worth $353,600. His total liabilities are $260,500.

Thus, from analyzing the MS Excel balance sheet, we see John’s net worth is $93,100.

The simple format used above can be modified per an individual’s requirements. For instance, Bob might have 5 checking accounts, 5 savings accounts, 3 houses, and 3 cars. With a few modifications, the template used by John can also be used by Bob.

Unlike the balance sheet, which lists out all stock variables affecting an individual’s financial position, the income statement lists out all flow variables affecting an individual’s financial position.

The sample personal income statement shown above lists John’s monthly income and expenses.

As can be seen from the income statement, John’s total monthly income is $12,000. His total monthly expenses are $9,350.

A combined view:

A personal financial statement can be a very valuable tool in planning out one’s finances. It is usually goal-oriented and can help an individual reach his or her financial goals, especially for young professionals entering the workforce for the first time. Most of these people are new to financial planning and a simple personal financial statement is an easy place to start.

With my deep interest, I want to pursue the course Finance and Accounting MSc at the University of Brighton because this course has access to modern computing facilities and specialist computing packages. And this course will provide me with the skills to make these investment decisions across various business areas. This degree will give me develop an in-depth knowledge of financial theory and practice, research methods, financial markets, financial accounting and management accounting. Moreover, I found this Finance and Accounting MSc will help me to specialise and meet the growing demand for finance professionals with strong research skills. I can also progress with or continue by studying for a Ph.D. I want to develop my career in this sector and the accounting and financial services sectors require a high level of understanding of theory and practice. And this MSc course can make me professional. I believe that this course will help me become professional and proficient in my future career.

Following my Intermediate and Secondary education from the Business Studies group, I completed my Bachelor’s degree major in Accounting in February 2022 from National University, Gazipur, Bangladesh. In my home country, there are many open places to develop a career in accountancy but they require a professional applicant. From this MSc course, I can meet the growing demand for finance professionals with strong research skills. So, I decided to complete my further higher studies by choosing this Finance and Accounting MSc at the University of Brighton. The core module units include Economics of Financial Markets, Financial Theory and Practice, Research Methods for Finance and Economics, Dissertation or Work Placement Project. So, I believe this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

UK’s academic reputation is globally renowned and it is known that having a graduate degree from a UK university will definitely propel one’s career to a significant level. However, the study environment in my country follows the theoretical system of education which is quite different and no soft skills are acquired. The UK maintains a quality management system with high standards in all fields. In recent years, all companies in Bangladesh are emphasizing hiring of Bangladeshi graduates with degrees from abroad, as they see the transferrable skills carried forward from the international education will play a key role in transforming their approach to the business and believe these graduates are capable of doing so. The transferable skills from the UK are key to advancing graduates through organizational growth and gaining a competitive advantage. This reason attracted me to pursue a degree in the UK. A recent survey of International Graduation Results in 2019 produced by iGraduate by Universities UK International shows that 82% of international graduates say their UK degree is valuable for financial investment and a similar number of graduates say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their careers. About 83% think a UK degree has helped them get a job. These aspects have driven my ambition to get a degree from a UK institution.

University of Brighton is one of the re-known top universities in the UK. As my study destination is the UK and I wish to study at the University of Brighton, because it offers an experience that goes way beyond the classroom. Their core values are part of a dynamic, diverse and creative community that embraces partnership working and that makes a positive difference to society. From there, I will be able to gain real-world knowledge and transferable skills that employers look for in graduate recruits. And by the time I graduate, I’ll feel confident and fully prepared to start my career anywhere in the world. The university won a Silver Award in Teaching Excellence Framework, which means that the learning environment and the teaching I will receive are consistently better than the national requirements for UK Higher Education. The university has around 18,000 students and 2,400 staff studying and working at four campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne. Also, according to Destination Leavers from Higher Education 2017-2018, 94% of University of Brighton graduates get engaged in work or further study within the first 6 months. I will also be able to make connections with local, national and international companies, as the university has links with over 1800 businesses, including Fujitsu, BT, Sky, Boots, IBM, and the NHS, while the university educates professionals from 90% of FTSE 100 companies. The university puts students on a fast track that is designed to get a postgraduate degree into faster employment with excellent career opportunities. Moreover, the University brings the workplace into classrooms so it will be beneficial for me to attain my personal career objectives by practicing in this type of learning environment. I am looking forward to studying and wish to experience all the opportunities the University of Brighton has to offer.

I want to study finance because it is a fascinating discipline dealing with money, markets and valuation that is relevant to all aspects of business. The financial system is there to make sure that those with good ideas get the money necessary to implement the ideas but finance is also concerned with the relationship between investor expectations about the future and current market values. A long-term career in finance requires certain qualities like decision making, problems solving and abilities to synthesize which in my opinion, I own. Since an early age I have always been determined and self-assured.

After graduating from high school I decided to move to Chicago to study. The finance and economics classes I have taken helped me to go to my finance skills in depth, using a combination of intuitions and analyses. Research papers enhanced my ability to deal with ambiguity in a quick changing environment where things can change from day to day. Furthermore, my involvement in an online certificate in finance gave me the opportunity to be more self-disciplined, organized and learnt me how to look for information in financial reviews like the Economist, the Wall Street Journal or the Financial Times and focus on financial info across different origins. By the way, it was also the beginning of the sub primes crisis and being in this environment allowed me to hear more of the differences between a practical and a theoretical situation. While candidates were running for Presidency, it was very interesting to see how they were debating about the country business reforms like a more federal reform regulation of corporations or the way to help small businesses.

Throughout my work experiences, my internship in a bank has provided the opportunity to work as a team co-operating with others and at the same time being independent. Often, I have been able to work on my own initiative, which I have enjoyed immensely as it has allowed me to use my own ideas and thoughts. Moreover, during high school, I have been twice-elected as a captain and it was a very rewarding experience. By being a spokesperson, my mission was to represent the views of my classmates and it brought me more than I was expected. In fact, those responsibilities taught me how to be more mature, developed my communication skills which are essential in an efficient organization.
