This is the second edition of the Open RN Nursing Skills OER textbook. This free online textbook is an open educational resource with CC-BY 4.0 licensing that has been developed for prelicensure nursing students. It is designed for use in both practical/vocational nursing programs, as well as for first-year courses in programs preparing students to become registered nurses. An additional Open RN OER textbook, “ Nursing Advanced Skills ,” includes advanced skills such as intravenous infusion, blood product administration, management of central lines and chest tube systems, basic electrocardiogram interpretation, and nasogastric/feeding tube insertion. The Open RN project is supported by a $2.5 million Open Resources for Nursing (Open RN) grant from the Department of Education and is licensed under CC-BY 4.0 creative commons license. More information about the Open RN project can be found at cvtc.edu/OpenRN .

The second edition has been updated according to the 2023 NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN Test Plans, and additional NCLEX Next Generation-style learning activities have been added to each chapter. It is aligned with the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) statewide nursing curriculum for the Nursing Skills course (543-102). View a list of updates made to the second edition based on the 2023 NCLEX Test Plans and suggestions received from WTCS nursing faculty.

This Open RN Nursing Skills OER textbook focuses on the development of evidence-based clinical skills and physical assessment across the life span routinely performed by entry-level nurses. Techniques related to obtaining a health history and basic physical assessment using a body systems approach are described and include sample skills checklists and instructor demonstration videos. Mathematical calculations and conversions related to clinical skills are also included. The first edition of Open RN Nursing Skills received an OE Award for Excellence from OE Global. For more information, visit the 2020 OE Awards for Excellence site .

Several free, online, interactive learning activities are included in each chapter to encourage students to apply the nursing process while analyzing assessment findings and performing nursing skills. Additionally, in this second edition, NCLEX Next-Generation style questions are included in each chapter, with formative feedback immediately provided, to encourage the development of clinical judgment based on the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model.

This online book can be downloaded as a PDF or other formats for offline use. The online version is required for interaction with the learning activities included in each chapter.

She follows four ER nurses at four hospitals… “Robbins works in lots of fascinating facts as she argues for improved working conditions for nurses … An educational, sometimes alarming read for anyone interested in learning behind-the-scenes details about hospital life.”

This textbook covers the all necessary portions of mental health. The authors cover the material in great detail across the lifespan. I felt the transition of the chapters and material were easy to follow and having a glossary section will be helpful to the reader. They made sure to be inclusive and demonstrate the many areas that care for mental health clients.

Content Accuracy rating: 5

Being a mental health nurse, I was impressed to see the book accurately make the reader aware of the various agencies and resources that are available. I did check out several of the links and they were working correctly.

Relevance/Longevity rating: 5

As a mental health nurse who worked during the pandemic, I saw first hand how everyone was impacted. I feel the text covers all populations well. I was impressed by how the separate chapter gave the reader such insight. The authors did a good job of threading the cultural interventions throughout the text.

Clarity rating: 5

I feel the text is presented very clear and easy for the reader to follow. The reader has the learning activities in each chapter that were easy to follow and understand.

Consistency rating: 5

The text is presented in a consistent format. Having the same layout of material, I feel makes it easier for the novice mental health reader to understand.

Modularity rating: 5

The content is divided fairly and makes it,I feel, easier for the reader to absorb the information and it is clearly expounded upon.

Organization/Structure/Flow rating: 5

The chapters are presented in a consistent format thus making the novice and expert (student and instructor) able to have a better understanding.

Interface rating: 5

The connection of the material presented and the provided links are smooth and there did not appear to be any gaps in the material presented.

Grammatical Errors rating: 5

I read several chapters and glossaries from start to end carefully and I did not notice any grammatical errors.

Cultural Relevance rating: 5

I feel the text incorporated awareness, understanding, and responsiveness to the values, beliefs, and customs fairly.

I enjoyed this text. As mentioned, as a mental health nurse and instructor, I found this text to a great possible adaptation for our students. The text was presented very nicely. Great job.

This text addresses all necessary areas of mental health, and includes specific information regarding each age group across the lifespan, e.g., Leading Health Indicators across the lifespan." I am most impressed by the clarity and flow of each chapter. The Learning Objectives are clearly stated. The Glossary is very helpful, and the Index is inclusive. There are many links that bring you directly to related content, seamlessly. In Ch 16, Community Assessment, Florence Nightingale is referenced for her focus on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The images are helpful, and demonstrate the array of places that both screenings and interventions takes place, - including school nurse's contribution which is often overlooked.

This book site many, many lead agencies and links you to the site! Healthy People 2030, SAMHSA, and many Needs Assessment tools, and other Evidence Based resources. Citations are also very recent.

This book is up to date, discussing the COVID Pandemic, and it's effect on Nursing. It has Sociocultural and Culturally Competent Interventions. That is an important aspect of nursing care. It addresses Health Equities and Inequities, and supports the learning by presenting the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) by presenting the imaging from the document, which enlivens the reading experience. Also, "Vulnerable Populations" are addressed in a separate chapter, but linked through the Community chapter, which is very helpful.

The font is pleasing, the images are helpful and supportive to the text which is very clear.

Each chapter follows the same format. I really appreciated the Learning Activities that are included at the end of the chapter. Also, the Glossary is at each chapter's end.

Chapters are clearly delineated. The book is also paginated, of course!

Yes, as mentioned, each chapter has the same organization, so the teacher and the student know what to expect.

Navigation and links are seamless, and thoughtfully placed.

I read 2 chapters and glossaries carefully. I did not note any issues.

This text has a focus on equity, and many images make that point wordlessly.

It's great! I applaud the Editors: Kimberly Ernstmeyer, MSN, RN, CNE, CHSE, APNP-BC Dr. Elizabeth Christman, DNP, RN, CNE
