What degrees are available in business administration?

students work together on laptops and paper at a table

There are three core degree paths in business administration: associate, bachelor's and master's. Each provides a different level of education and takes a different amount of time to complete. The degree you choose determines the business administration roles available to you and can significantly influence your salary.

In this Article

Associate degree

Bachelor's degree, master's degree.

  • Online programs

Which degree is right for you?

  • Accreditation

"A degree in business administration is probably the most universal degree you could ever earn," said Ralph Griffith, BA, MBA, DBA, an associate professor of entrepreneurship at Lenoir-Rhyne University. It's also a versatile degree that can open the door to many business careers.

Depending upon the degree level you're pursuing, your coursework will both stay the same and differ. Your first two years (essentially an associate degree level) cover introductory subjects and classes designed to give you the basics of business admin. As you progress to third and fourth year studies your classes incorporate humanities and subjects other than business, that will give you a well-rounded education as well as focus on your area of specialty.

Once you've earned your bachelor's and decide to do a postgraduate program such as a master's degree or an MBA, you'll dive into your area of specialty and complete in-depth, advanced courses that prepare you for management or administrative roles.

An entry-level business degree for people who want to enter the field quickly. It takes two years to complete and can qualify you for roles such as human resources assistant or marketing associate.

What subjects will an associate degree cover?

You'll take general intro courses in a variety of subject areas and earn credits towards your bachelor's degree in an associate in business administration program. These programs are designed to give you a well-rounded introduction to business and help you decide what you may later be interested in focusing upon for your career.

Your class schedule may look something like this:

  • Introduction to international business
  • Business law I
  • Management accounting
  • Principles of finance
  • Marketing strategies
  • Leadership in business

A bachelor's in business administration is a foundational degree that can give you the education you need for managerial or administrative roles. Most roles in business administration will look for at least a bachelor's degree from candidates. A bachelor's will take four years to complete if you study full time.

What courses will I take to earn my bachelor's degree in business administration?

You'll likely take business administration classes or select a concentration to focus your efforts in a bachelor's degree program. Some of the areas of specialty you may choose from include:

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Healthcare administration
  • Human resources
  • International business
  • Project management
  • Public administration
  • Sports management

Here are examples of a business administration course you could take within your area of specialty:

  • Accounting: Intermediate accounting
  • Entrepreneurship: Business plan preparation
  • Finance: Corporate finance
  • Healthcare administration: Healthcare quality management
  • Human resources: Employee and labor relations
  • Marketing: Digital marketing
  • Project management: Resource estimating and scheduling
  • Public administration: Public fiscal management
  • Sports management: Sports marketing

Your bachelor's program could include other generalized classes such as these:

  • General education credits
  • Micro and macroeconomics

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a great way to get the education you need to pursue leadership, executive and other advanced roles in business administration. A master's can take 18 months to two years to complete.

What business administration topics are covered during an MBA?

You'll be required to focus on your specialty area of business administration in a master's or MBA program. Besides coursework in your concentration you'll take advanced classes in areas that prepare you to lead and inspire:

  • Advanced business core classes such as operations and technology management, global political economy, data-driven decision-making, ethics and social impact
  • Data analytics
  • Global management
  • Supply chain management

The majority of your coursework focuses on your area of specialized study and emphasis.

Can you earn a business administration degree online?

BusinessAdministration-icon

No matter the business administration degree path you choose, online options are available. Online programs are an increasingly popular option because of the flexibility they offer. They could be the only option for working students, parents of young children, people who live in remote areas or far from schools that offer programs that fit their needs, or anyone else who needs an option beyond traditional campus learning.

Online programs are an increasingly popular option because of the flexibility they provide, and they're available for all business administration degrees.

Students in online programs receive the same education as students in traditional on-campus programs. They are able to attend class by listening to recorded lectures and reviewing learning materials at their convenience. Online students can use teleconferencing to talk with professors, get help from a tutor or study with fellow students.

The right degree for you depends on your personal circumstances, goals and other factors. For instance, it's important to consider things like timing, finances and goals.

Keep in mind that you don't have to decide right away. You can always start with an associate or bachelor's degree and then go back to school later. Your experience in the workforce might even be beneficial in future classes.

How soon do you want to enter the job market?

As a rule, the higher the degree you're pursuing is, the longer it will take to complete your education. That means it's faster to earn an associate degree than a bachelor's or master's.

What can you afford?

Advanced degrees are a bigger financial commitment. Since they take more time, you'll spend more money earning them.

What are your career aspirations?

The career you imagine for yourself could dictate the education you'll need. For instance, if you want to work as a marketing manager , a bachelor's degree might be a great fit. If your goal is a leadership or executive role, you'll need to earn an MBA.

How much do you want to earn?

As a rule, earning an advanced degree means a higher salary . You might pay more to earn a bachelor's degree, but it's likely you'll have a wider choice of jobs and a higher salary when you graduate.

Why is accreditation important?

What should you look for in a program? "Number one, I would look for an accredited program," said Griffith. "Accreditation means that schools have been vetted, and they are legitimate schools with great histories and programs and lots of alumni."

This applies to online or on-campus business administration programs. Accreditation matters because:

  • Accreditation means your program has met the standards needed to deliver quality education and set you up for success.
  • You won't be able to transfer the credits you earn to another school later if your program isn't accredited. This could make it difficult to transfer schools or to earn an advanced degree in the future.
  • You won't be able to apply for federal financial aid unless you attend an accredited program. You can't receive loans, grants or other aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you attend a program that is not accredited.
  • Many professional certifications require education from accredited schools and programs. Without an accredited education, you won't be able to earn these career-boosting credentials.
  • Employers might look for candidates who have degrees from accredited programs. You could have trouble getting hired without an accredited degree.

Accrediting agencies

The following organizations accredit business administration programs and list the programs on their websites.

AACSB: The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business is a global nonprofit that grants national accreditation to undergraduate and graduate business administration programs. Only 30% of U.S. business schools have AACSB accreditation, widely regarded as the highest level of accreditation for business schools.

ACBSP: The Accreditation Council for Collegiate Business Schools and Programs accredits smaller private and public schools that offer associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral-level business degrees that focus on teaching.

CHEA: The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) is an umbrella group for 3,000 degree-granting colleges and universities. It recognizes 60 school and program-specific accrediting groups, including the AACSB and ACBSP.

DEAC: The Distance Education Accrediting Commission grants accreditation to online programs that are at least 2 years old.

Completing an entrepreneurship degree online can provide some flexibility in scheduling your coursework around your other obligations. Many online programs are asynchronous, which means you can watch lectures, review resources and complete assignments on your own schedule.

However, not all online programs work this way. Some require you to meet at specific times for live classes, known as synchronous programs. While these can be beneficial if you prefer real-time interaction and feedback, they’re not usually as accommodating as asynchronous programs. Research a program’s format before enrolling to decide if it aligns with your schedule and learning needs.

Also, be aware of internship requirements . Some online entrepreneurship programs let you complete all coursework online, but you might still need to participate in an in-person internship. Others let you choose between internships and electives or complete a capstone project instead.

Many colleges and universities undergo a voluntary accreditation process to highlight their faculty, academics and student outcomes.

Institutional accreditation covers an entire school, with institutional accrediting bodies including but not limited to the Higher Learning Commission, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the WASC Senior College and University Commission. Schools typically only accept transfer credits from accredited schools, and you must attend an accredited school to be eligible for federal financial aid.

Entrepreneurship degrees or their associated business departments might also have programmatic accreditation, which can help identify programs with industry-aligned curriculums. The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, the International Accreditation Council for Business Education and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business commonly endorse business programs and departments.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation’s directory is a helpful starting point for finding accredited schools and programs. Many schools also highlight their accreditation information on their websites.

Consider Your Future Goals

Whether you want to own a business, become a business consultant or dive into marketing, an entrepreneurship degree can set you on the right path. Researching and comparing programs is the best way to ensure a degree fits your goals.

For example, do you plan to continue your education with a master’s degree ? If so, you might consider an accelerated online entrepreneurship program that bridges bachelor’s and master’s degrees, allowing you to complete both in a shorter amount of time.

Also, decide whether you’d like a program with a concentration that lets you take a few courses in a focus area, such as franchising or social entrepreneurship. This can help you build specialized skills to carry into your future career.

Finally, look for a program with an internship if you’d like to gain hands-on business experience. Internships can also help you start building your network and your professional brand, which could pave the way for job opportunities in the future.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Tuition rates for our ranked entrepreneurship degrees range from $231 to $568 per credit, equating to estimated costs of $27,720 to $68,160 for a typical 120-credit program. Assuming the degree takes four years to complete, you can expect to pay between $6,930 and $17,040 per year.

To compare, data from the National Center for Education Statistics states that the average tuition and fees for the 2022–2023 academic year totaled $17,709 among four-year private and public schools.

A good first step to paying for school is filling out the FAFSA® to see what federal financial aid—such as federal student loans, work-study programs and grants—you’re eligible for. You can also speak with a financial aid advisor at the schools you’re interested in to learn more about their institutional scholarships and other financial aid offerings.

What degree is best for entrepreneurship?

A bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship can be an excellent choice if you want to become an entrepreneur. This degree incorporates several aspects of small business management—such as raising capital, managing finances and improving business communication skills—while helping you develop a leadership and innovation mindset.

How long does it take to get an entrepreneurship degree?

Bachelor’s-level entrepreneurship degrees usually require at least 120 credits and take four years to finish. However, some schools offer accelerated or part-time programs, which could decrease or increase the time to completion.

Is an entrepreneur degree the same as a business degree?

Although there’s a good amount of overlap between an entrepreneurship degree and a business degree, these degrees aren’t the same. A business degree provides a generalized business education for various roles in the industry, while an entrepreneurship degree is more specific to entrepreneurial concepts like innovation, marketing and small business management.

Breaking News

Business | jury seated at trial of 3 men accused of robbery, fatal shooting in norristown [updated], subscriber only, business | ll flooring reverses course and will remain in business under new owner, 3 area stores in berks, montgomery counties to remain open.

Home improvement chain LL Flooring has found a last minute buyer and will keep 219 stores open under the new organization. Among the stores remaining open are two in Montgomery, and one in Berks counties, including this store, 4782 Pottsville Pike in Muhlenberg Township. (Bill Uhrich - MediaNews Group)

On Friday afternoon, the hardwood flooring retailer signed an agreement with private equity firm F9 Investments for a sale of its business. The Associated Press reported Monday morning that under terms of the deal, which is expected to close by the end of September, F9 will acquire 219 LL Flooring stores and a Virginia distribution center as well as the company’s intellectual property and other assets.

The announcement comes one week after the chain announced it had begun the process of winding down its business and closing its stores in the absence of securing a buyer.

Among the stores that are being purchased and will remain open under the new organization are three LL Flooring stores in the tri-county region — in Upper Providence Township at N1420 East Drive and in Hatfield Township at 285 Bethlehem Pike — both in Montgomery County, and 4782 Pottsville Pike in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County.

Another 211 LL Flooring stores are still set to close, however. That includes 117 locations where closings were recently initiated and 94 others that were already in the process of closing since the Virginia company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Aug. 11 .

One of the stores that is closing is in Chester County, 213 W. Lincoln Highway in West Whiteland Township, one of the 94 closures announced in mid-August. Of the company’s 21 Pennsylvania stores, nine will close as part of the new organization, according to the list of store closures on the LL Flooring website .

The company previously said it expected the process to take about 12 weeks to complete.

In a statement, LL Flooring president and CEO Charles Tyson said the company was “pleased to have reached this agreement” with F9 “following significant efforts by our team and advisors to preserve the business,” according to The Associated Press report.

Tyson added that LL Flooring, formerly known as Lumber Liquidators, remains committed to continuing to serve customers and vendors as the transaction moves through bankruptcy court for approval.

F9 is based in Miami and is owned by Tom Sullivan, who founded Lumber Liquidators more than 30 years ago. Sullivan told The Associated Press that the 219 stores set to be purchased by F9 will open under the Lumber Liquidators name again.

“We’ll be getting back to basics,” Sullivan said. “Basically, yellow and black is coming back … We know what worked before. It’s not fancy offices in Richmond with 200 people that didn’t know the flooring business. It’s great people in our stores that know flooring (and) customers that want a great deal and know Lumber Liquidators is the place to go.”

Sullivan explained that the company plans to narrow down to a more manageable selection of flooring options, and will get rid of material that feels duplicative or doesn’t sell well, The Associated Press reported. As a result, customers will likely see big discounts on much of the inventory left behind from LL Flooring’s bankruptcy process. He added that the company will be closely aligned with Cabinets To Go, another F-9 owned brand that he founded, to help with shipping efficiency.

Ahead of filing for bankruptcy, LL Flooring also entered a proxy battle over the summer that was centered on attempts to keep Sullivan, who had tried to acquire the business before, off the board, The Associated Press reported. In June, company leadership wrote a letter urging shareholders to vote for other nominees, accusing Sullivan of “pushing a personal agenda.” But LL Flooring later confirmed that the founder and F9’s other nominees were elected at its annual shareholder meeting in July.

Lumber Liquidators was founded in 1993 in Massachusetts, and later expanded operations nationwide. The brick-and-mortar retailer officially changed its name to LL Flooring at the beginning of 2022.

NEW YORK (AP) — After securing a last-minute buyer, LL Flooring is reversing course on shutting down all of its stores .

The hardwood flooring retailer formerly known as Lumber Liquidators signed an agreement with private equity firm F9 Investments for a sale of its business on Friday afternoon. Under terms of the deal, expected to close by the end of September, F9 will acquire 219 stores and a Virginia distribution center — as well as LL Flooring’s intellectual property and other assets.

Another 211 LL Flooring stores are still set to close, however. That includes 117 locations where closings were recently initiated and 94 others that were already in the process when the Virginia company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on August 11.

Just weeks after filing for Chapter 11, LL Flooring previously said that it would be “winding down operations” and closing all of its stores after failing to find a buyer in negotiations. The retailer expected the process to take about 12 weeks.

But that changed after a deal was reached with F9 on Friday. In a statement, LL Flooring president and CEO Charles Tyson said that company was “pleased to have reached this agreement” with F9 “following significant efforts by our team and advisors to preserve the business.”

Tyson added that LL Flooring remains “committed to continuing to serve” customers and vendors as the transaction moves through bankruptcy court for approval.

F9, based in Miami, is owned by Tom Sullivan, who founded Lumber Liquidators over 30 years ago. Sullivan told The Associated Press that the 219 stores set to be purchased by F9 will open under the Lumber Liquidators name again.

“We’ll be getting back to basics,” Sullivan said. “Basically, yellow and black is coming back ... We know what worked before. It’s not fancy offices in Richmond with 200 people that didn’t know the flooring business. It’s great people in our stores that know flooring (and) customers that want a great deal and know Lumber Liquidators is the place to go.”

Sullivan explained that the company plans to narrow down to a more “mangeable” selection of flooring options, and getting rid of material that feels duplicative or doesn’t sell well, so customers will likely see big discounts on much of the inventory left behind from LL Flooring’s bankruptcy process. He added that the company will be closely aligned with Cabinets To Go, another F-9 owned brand that he founded, to help with shipping efficiency.

Lumber Liquidators got its start in 1993, as a modest operation in Massachusetts, and later expanded operations nationwide. The brick-and-mortar retailer officially changed its name to LL Flooring at the start of 2022.

The company previously faced turmoil after a 2015 segment of “60 Minutes” reported that laminate flooring it was selling had illegal and dangerous levels of formaldehyde. Lumber Liquidators later said it would stop selling the product and agreed to pay $36 million to settle two class-action lawsuits in 2017.

LL Flooring has had difficulty turning a profit in recent years. Net sales fell 18.5% in 2023, according to a recent earnings report, amid declines in foot traffic and weak demand with mortgage rates and housing prices high. In its Chapter 11 filing, LL Flooring disclosed that total debts amounted to more than $416 million as of July 31, compared with assets of just over $501 million.

Ahead of filing for bankruptcy, LL Flooring also entered a proxy battle over the summer — centered on attempts to keep Sullivan, who had tried to acquire the business before, off the board. In June, company leadership wrote a letter urging shareholders to vote for other nominees, accusing Sullivan of “pushing a personal agenda.” But LL Flooring later confirmed that the founder and F9’s other nominees were elected at its annual shareholder meeting in July.
