What is the difference between therapy and clinical psychology?

The terms "therapy" and "clinical psychology" are often used interchangeably, but they refer to two distinct yet related areas of mental health care. Understanding the difference between the two is important for those seeking treatment for mental health issues.

Therapy refers to the treatment of mental health and emotional problems through the use of psychological techniques and interventions. Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a broad category that encompasses a range of approaches to therapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and humanistic therapy.

Clinical psychology, on the other hand, is a specialized field within psychology that focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions and behavioral issues. Clinical psychologists are licensed mental health professionals who have completed graduate-level training in psychology and are trained in the use of evidence-based therapeutic techniques to help individuals address their mental health issues and achieve their goals.

While therapy can be provided by a wide range of mental health professionals, such as social workers, counselors, and marriage and family therapists, clinical psychology is a specialty within the field of psychology that requires specialized training and certification. Clinical psychologists are equipped to provide a range of psychological services, including individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy.

What to look for in a Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical Psychology Eating Disorders Psychologist In Dubai Clinical Psychologist Cda Licensed Psychologist Fully Equipped Abu Dhabi Work Experience Best Psychologist Dubai Healthcare City

Choosing a clinical psychologist is an important decision that can impact the success of your treatment and overall mental well-being.

When selecting a clinical psychologist, it is important to consider a number of factors to ensure that you are working with a qualified and competent professional who is well-suited to your needs.

The first factor to consider is the psychologist's training and credentials.

Clinical psychologists must have a PhD or PsyD degree in psychology, and be licensed to practice in your state.

It is also important to ensure that the psychologist has received specialized training in the area of concern, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship issues.

You can check the psychologist's credentials through the state licensing board or professional organizations such as the American Psychological Association.

The next factor to consider is the psychologist's approach to therapy. Different clinical psychologists may have different approaches to therapy, and it is important to find one whose approach aligns with your goals and needs.

For example, some psychologists may use a more cognitive-behavioral approach, while others may use a more psychodynamic or humanistic approach.

It is important to discuss the psychologist's approach and determine if it is a good fit for you.

Another important factor to consider is the psychologist's experience and expertise.

Consider the psychologist's years of experience, the types of patients they have treated in the past, and their area of specialization.

You may also want to ask for references or read online reviews from past patients to gain insight into the psychologist's skills and abilities.

It is also important to consider the psychologist's availability and accessibility.

You should ensure that the psychologist's office is conveniently located, and that they have a flexible schedule to accommodate your needs.

You should also consider the psychologist's communication style, and whether they are responsive and accessible to your needs.

Finally, it is important to consider the psychologist's fees and insurance coverage.

While cost should not be the only determining factor, it is important to consider your budget and insurance coverage when choosing a psychologist.

You should also discuss the psychologist's fee structure and payment options, and ensure that you are comfortable with their fees and policies.

In conclusion, choosing a clinical psychologist is an important decision that requires careful consideration of several factors, including training and credentials, approach to therapy, experience and expertise, availability and

Is Treatment confidential?

Confidentiality is a key aspect of the therapeutic relationship and is essential for building trust between the client and the clinical psychologist.

Understanding the confidentiality policies of the clinical psychologist you are considering is important for those who are considering seeking treatment.

In general, the relationship between a clinical psychologist and a client is considered to be confidential, and the psychologist is bound by ethical and legal obligations to maintain the privacy of the client's information. This means that the psychologist cannot disclose information about the client or their treatment to others without the client's informed consent, except in certain limited circumstances.

However, there are some exceptions to the general rule of confidentiality in therapy.

For example, if the clinical psychologist determines that the client is a danger to themselves or others, they may be required by law to take action to protect the safety of the individual or others.

Additionally, if the client is a minor or an elderly person, the psychologist may be required to report suspected abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities.

Another important aspect of confidentiality is the use of electronic communication, such as email or text messaging.

While these modes of communication can be convenient, they may not be secure, and the confidentiality of the information exchanged cannot be guaranteed.

Before using electronic communication with a clinical psychologist, it is important to understand the psychologist's policies on the use of electronic communication and the risks associated with its use.

It is essential to note that clinical psychologists collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including pediatricians, psychiatrists, and school counselors, to provide comprehensive and coordinated care for teenagers.

The multidisciplinary approach at ou mental health clinic helps to meet the teenager's needs and to ensure that the most appropriate treatment is received for their individual situation, whether this is social anxiety, panic attacks or more serious psychotic disorders and personality disorders.

To summarize, clinical psychologists have the ability to help teenagers with a broad spectrum of emotional and behavioral difficulties.

Through evidence-based treatments, clinical psychologists can support teenagers in overcoming challenges, enhancing their mental health, and building the skills necessary for success in life.

If you are considering seeking treatment for a teenager, it is crucial to find a qualified clinical psychologist with experience working with this population and a commitment to helping teenagers reach their full potential.

Clinical Psychologist | Dubai

With 15 years of experience as a clinical psychologist, I relocated to the United Arab Emirates in 2019. I offer anxiety treatment, as well as therapy for adults struggling with depression, painful experiences, negative thoughts, uncomfortable emotional states, unhealthy behaviours, and undermining relationship patterns. Practicing as a clinical psychologist in Dubai, a multi-cultural metropolis, affirms the universality of humankind – similar mental health issues occur across all nationalities.

eye-new.jpg

What do you see?

The image at the top of the page can be viewed as a rabbit or a duck and illustrates that what we apprehend is not always entirely accurate - alternate perspectives are possible. This does not mean that anxiety can simply be overcome by visualising a state of tranquility; this is too simplistic.

To stay with the example of anxiety, the rabbit/duck image illustrates that we do not always fully grasp the various factors underlying an anxious state. For example, we might seek anxiety treatment with a clinical psychologist in the United Arab Emirates following relationship difficulties. After examining the manifest symptoms of anxiety, the therapist will also probe beneath the surface of the symptoms to identify less visible factors contributing to the distressed state of mental health. For example, the anxiety may also point to an insecurity regarding personal value, issues with trust, or a fear of abandonment.

The question then becomes less about anxiety treatment and more about improving self-esteem, trust, and managing abandonment fears. Symptoms should not always be taken at face value. They often communicate less visible aspects of ourselves. Living as an expat is a time limited experience and offers a moment to stop and examine our mental health with a clinical psychologist in Dubai.

image025.jpg

Is there something wrong with me?

Consulting with a clinical psychologist in Dubai may cause you to wonder if there is something wrong with you. The short answer to this is that we all have mental health issues which can at times become impossible to deal with on our own. Most importantly, anxiety treatment and the alleviation of depressive symptoms are essential to improving our quality of life.

These issues exist for particular reasons and have not appeared out of thin air. A therapist aims to understand how these issues developed, why they continue to operate, and to assist in affecting change. The sooner that we acknowledge and work with our particular mental health issues the better – both for ourselves and others.

type-of-tharapy-new.jpg

Types Of Therapy

Clinical psychology is dissimilar to the singular model of modern medicine. There are many different types of therapy on offer in Dubai and it can be difficult to choose the best clinical psychologist for you. Broadly speaking, most types of therapy can be classified as either psychodynamic therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy.

Psychodynamic therapy evolved out of psychoanalysis. Common features include discussing the influence of past experiences on current difficulties, identifying recurring patterns, expressing emotions, deepening insight and emotional understanding, and recognizing unconscious factors.

Cognitive behavioral therapy grew out of a disillusionment with the psychoanalytic model and the difficulty with transforming insight into action. Cognitive behavioral therapy is less nuanced than psychodynamic therapy and offers practical tools for anxiety treatment and various psychological difficulties. Little to no emphasis is placed on the influence of past experiences or unconscious dynamics. The therapist achieves change by examining and challenging distorted thinking patterns and disrupting unwanted behaviours.

Most clinical psychologists in Dubai tend to practice either psychodynamic therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy. I primarily practice psychodynamic therapy, although I include cognitive behavioral therapy when necessary. For example, OCD and Panic Disorder respond well to cognitive behavioral therapy, although they also benefit from a psychodynamic understanding of underlying factors.

diagnosis-new.jpg

Mainstream clinical psychology emphasizes diagnosis as the first port of call. Although diagnosis risks boxing individuality, it also helps to identify the precise nature of a mental health issue. In turn, this influences the focus of therapy. For example, a diagnosis of depression will require a treatment focus that differs from anxiety treatment.

That being said, diagnosis is only one aspect of therapy. A psychodynamically trained clinical psychologist will pay attention to various factors underlying a diagnosis. These include attachment style, cognitive and affective patterns, personality features, interpersonal themes, defenses, and unconscious factors.

Diagnosis can be understood as locating an area on a map. The exploration of the actual territory is analagous to therapy, and the clinical psychologist can be viewed as a guide.

draw-bridge.jpg

Defences are an integral part of our psychology and we will find them occurring at home, in Dubai, and on holiday. They develop unconsciously during our childhood to protect us from painful experiences, thoughts and feelings. One of the problems with defences is that they become outdated as we move into adulthood and risk compromising our mental health. For example, let us imagine that the denial of emotion was used to manage hurtful childhood experiences. This works well until adulthood is reached and romantic relationships are entered into. The continued denial of emotion will negatively impact on the quality of a relationship. Adulthood requires the identification, examination, and reshaping of our particular defence strategies if we hope to have positive relations with both ourselves and others. Treatment by a clinical psychologist will facilitate this process.

Below are some of the common defences that we use, most of which operate at an unconscious level:

  Projection

Projection involves transferring your thoughts and feelings onto others. It is used to avoid painful internal states. For example, you wake up not feeling that great about your physical appearance. You manage to shake away these sentiments, but notice how unattractive someone else looks during the course of the day. Projection allows you to distance yourself from self-loathing by placing the very same issue onto others.

  Introjection

Introjection is the reverse of projection and involves the adoption of specific experiences. For example, a child grows up with a critical parent. The child absorbs the messages passed on by the parent and develops an intense internal critic.

  Suppression

Suppression involves consciously forcing certain thoughts and feelings out of awareness. For example, you find yourself sexually attracted to your partner’s best friend. You deliberately choose not to think about the person.

  Intellectualization

Intellectualization involves the avoidance of uncomfortable emotions by focusing on logic and facts. For example, faced with an unwanted break-up, you obsessively research ways to overcome rejection.

  Rationalization

Rationalization involves the bending of facts to justify our thoughts, feelings or behaviours. This allows you to feel better about yourself. For example, you secretly look through your partner’s Whatsapp messages and say to yourself that lots of people do this.

Passive-aggressive behaviour

We avoid confrontation and find an indirect way to convey our frustration. This allows a partial discharge of emotion, although it occurs at a cost. For example, you feel hurt by someone and instead of raising the issue, enter into a period of sulking.

image028.jpg

The Study of Personality

The study of personality is a fundamental aspect to improving your mental health. Understanding your personality make-up in a fast-paced and demanding city like Dubai is vital. A clinical psychologist has a number of personality measures at their disposal.

The most valid personality test is the Big Five Model of Personality. It is made up of 5 factors (easily remembered as OCEAN) which drive our thoughts and behaviours. These factors are Openness To Experience, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The specific combination of these 5 factors determines our individual personality make-up. This helps to explain why we all react differently, behave differently, and view the same situation in different ways.

Each of the five personality characteristics have high and low levels of expression. In turn, both high and low levels of expression have healthy and less healthy ways of expressing themselves. For example, high levels of Conscientiousness will generally show in a responsible character, although an excess of the trait can result in rigidity. Contrastingly, low levels of Conscientiousness typically indicate an easy-go-lucky quality, although a surplus of low Conscientiousness can result in unpredictability.

There is no ideal combination of personality attributes. That being said, our mental health may benefit from the improved regulation of certain aspects of our personality. For example, a person with high levels of agreeableness may find it advantageous to moderate this quality if they are repeatedly taken advantage of.

1. Openness to Experience

This factor relates to curiosity and a willingness to try novel experiences. High levels of openness to experience are associated with the pursuit of adventure and the holding of less traditional beliefs. Taken too far, this trait will show in risk-taking and unpredictability. On the other hand, low levels of openness to experience indicate a pragmatic and traditional quality. Contrastingly, very low levels of openness to experience show in a close-minded and rigid mindset.

673295.jpg

2. Conscientiousness

This factor relates to self-discipline, responsibility, and a striving for achievement. High levels of conscientiousness reflect in a focused and determined approach. Taken to an extreme, this can manifest as inflexibility and an overly serious quality. Contrastingly, low levels of conscientiousness indicate a flexible and spontaneous disposition. Pushed too far, this risks disorganization and unreliability.

Evolution-of-teh-speakeasy-Joseph-Webster-Golinkin-1933-co-Museum-city-of-new-york.jpg

3. Extraversion

This factor relates to a pronounced engagement with the external world and is often mistakenly assumed to be a preferred attribute (in contrast to introversion). On a positive note, high levels of extraversion reflect in a cheerful and sociable disposition. However, exaggerated levels of extraversion manifest in attention-seeking behaviour and a difficulty with spending time alone. On the other hand, low levels of extraversion (i.e. introversion) indicate a reserved and deliberate quality. Taken too far, this manifests in a tendency to withdraw and feelings of loneliness.

nurse-new.jpg

4. Agreeableness

This factor relates to a preference for social harmony. High levels of agreeableness show in a kind, trusting and forgiving disposition and are often seen in the caring professions (e.g. nursing, teaching, and the NGO sector). Taken too far, this can result in conflict avoidance, a lack of assertion, and the adoption of victimhood. Contrastingly, low levels of agreeableness reflect in a competitive and challenging disposition. Taken to an extreme, low agreeableness manifests in an argumentative and unfriendly interpersonal style.

Neuroticism.jpg

5. Neuroticism

This factor relates to negative emotions. High levels of neuroticism indicate emotional depth, empathy and realism. Taken to an extreme, this manifests as emotional instability, vulnerability to stress, and pessimism. On the other hand, low levels of neuroticism reflect in emotional stability and a resilience to stress. Excessively low levels of neuroticism are typically seen in an emotional flatness and insensitivity to risk.

Professional associations have a mandate to protect and regulate those members deemed qualified to provide mental health services to the public. This is accomplished through supervision and policing of practitioners’ conduct, informed by an understanding of the application of ethics. Yet, in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, many hurdles preclude the development and maintenance of professional organizations, such as a lack of understanding of the range of services available within psychology, little professional oversight and no legal mandate for it, as well as a disinterest in professionalizing the field. Yet, by adopting a positive psychology framework, the current view from a focus on wrongdoing to a more positive approach that encourages psychologists to reach a state of professional excellence, can be accomplished via the notion of positive supervision, positive ethics, and virtuousness as an organizational trait. We explore multiple ways for how this can be accom...

Background:In 1983, an article and accompanying editorial was published on the state of psychiatry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), which was described as “a mental health system in statu nascendi.”Methods:We provide a 30-year update on advances in mental health care in KSA. Data are reported from a wide range of sources, including the 2007 Saudi Arabian Mental and Social Health Atlas, which compares services in KSA with the rest of the world. Results:We examine how the current mental health system operates in KSA, including recent changes in mental healthcare policy and development of a national mental healthcare plan. Discussed are current needs based on the prevalence and recognition of mental disorders; availability of services and providers (psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, and social workers); education and training in psychiatry; developments in consultation-liaison, addictions, child-adolescent, and geriatric psychiatry; and progress in mental health res...

Background: This paper examines the historical development of mental health services in the United Arab Emirates including the formation of federal laws and ministerial decrees associated with mental health. The sharia aspects of mental health are reviewed briefly. Aims: The paper seeks to give readers a well-rounded sense of the structure, challenges and levels of development of the mental health system. The implications are examined, as well as the possibility for growth evaluated such that further work in this area is encouraged. Methods: The research is based on literature review using various electronic databases. As existing research in mental health in the Gulf region, particularly in the UAE is considerably sparse, interviews were conducted in two major psychiatric hospitals by graduate students of the first author. No direct quotes were used; the information was transcribed and relevant information included in the paper. Results: All federal laws and ministerial decrees are listed and local cultural considerations and sharia laws discussed as they are unique to this country and region. Conclusion: The country is making slow but steady progress in mental health sector and it is essential to keep track of and encourage such growth on an ongoing basis.

ISU Clinical Psychology PhD Student Wins National Ethics Writing Contest

June 24, 2024

Clinical psychology doctoral student Ana Stalzer's submission titled "Harm Through Stigma: Commander Notification of Service Members’ Mental Health" to the APA Ethics Committee writing contest was selected as the award-winning manuscript for the 2024 Graduate Student Ethics Writing Competition.

She will be recognized for this award at the annual American Psychology Association conference in Seattle in August 2024 and her paper will be published in the peer reviewed journal Ethics and Behavior.

This paper describes issues in the confidentiality of military services members' mental health and the stigma military service members often face regarding mental health needs. This essay is based on work Ana began in graduate ISU psychology courses in Ethics with Professor Joshua Swift and continued to work on in Advanced Social Psychology with Professor Mona Xu.  The title of the paper is "Harm Through Stigma: Commander Notification of Service Members’ Mental Health."

Tara Sullivan (they/she) is a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program, working under the mentorship of Dr. Ethan Mereish. Tara graduated from Stanford University in 2022, having earned their bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a specialization in Health and Development. Following her graduation, Tara served for two years as the Lab Manager for the Lavender Lab at UMD, assisting with studies aimed at exploring how intersectional minority stress influences mental health outcomes and substance use patterns in Queer and Trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QTBIPOC) adolescents.

Tara is broadly interested in understanding how converging systems of oppression (i.e. racism, heterosexism, and cissexism) can contribute to health disparities for QTBIPOC communities. Simultaneously, they are also interested in using strengths-based approaches to explore protective factors at the structural, community, and individual levels, which can inform culturally-informed and scalable interventions to improve the mental health and resilience of QTBIPOC communities.

Their research is driven by a desire to work in tandem with community-based partners to support the mental health, well-being, and liberation of all QTBIPOC community members.
