Preview text, week 2 ati video case study: client rights.
In this video the daughters asks to speak to the nurse alone saying they need to save her mother because she doesn’t know what she is saying (ATI, 2019). If I was the nurse, I would speak to the daughter respectfully and tell her that “I understand you have concerns and the anger you must be feeling about your mother wishing to stop chemotherapy, would you like to discuss your mothers decision further?”. Her mother is currently feeling a lot of pain because being a patient with cancer is not easy on the body or someone’s emotions. I would encourage the daughter to express her feelings on how she feels about her mother stating she would like to stop treatment. She also might have been caught by surprise and really thought her mother didn’t mean to say that. This will help get a better understanding and see what course of action can help them both get through this tough time like counseling and more support. I would also let the daughter know politely that her mother has the right to make her treatment decisions as the mother needs pain medications and stated she wanted to stop chemo therapy which the patient has all the rights to her course of treatment (Holman et al., 2021). She can accept, reject, or ask for any modifications to her care plan because as a nurse we need to honor the rights of a patient and be their advocate while implementing care to the patient (Holman et al., 2021).
