The words ‘ dissertation ’ and ‘thesis’ both refer to a large written research project undertaken to complete a degree, but they are used differently depending on the country:
The main difference is in terms of scale – a dissertation is usually much longer than the other essays you complete during your degree.
Another key difference is that you are given much more independence when working on a dissertation. You choose your own dissertation topic , and you have to conduct the research and write the dissertation yourself (with some assistance from your supervisor).
Dissertation word counts vary widely across different fields, institutions, and levels of education:
However, none of these are strict guidelines – your word count may be lower or higher than the numbers stated here. Always check the guidelines provided by your university to determine how long your own dissertation should be.
At the bachelor’s and master’s levels, the dissertation is usually the main focus of your final year. You might work on it (alongside other classes) for the entirety of the final year, or for the last six months. This includes formulating an idea, doing the research, and writing up.
A PhD thesis takes a longer time, as the thesis is the main focus of the degree. A PhD thesis might be being formulated and worked on for the whole four years of the degree program. The writing process alone can take around 18 months.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . It usually comes near the end of your introduction .
Your thesis will look a bit different depending on the type of essay you’re writing. But the thesis statement should always clearly state the main idea you want to get across. Everything else in your essay should relate back to this idea.

A thesis statement summarizes the central points of your essay. It is a signpost telling the reader what the essay will argue and why.
The best thesis statements are:

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education: the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.
You should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called a working thesis , early in the writing process . As soon as you’ve decided on your essay topic , you need to work out what you want to say about it—a clear thesis will give your essay direction and structure.
You might already have a question in your assignment, but if not, try to come up with your own. What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?
For example, you might ask:
After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage it can be simple, and it should guide the research process and writing process .

Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get more detailed.
In your essay about the internet and education, the thesis states your position and sketches out the key arguments you’ll use to support it.

In your essay about braille, the thesis statement summarizes the key historical development that you’ll explain.
The invention of braille in the 19th century transformed the lives of blind people, allowing them to participate more actively in public life.
A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:
The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.
These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.
Your thesis statement should match the goals of your essay, which vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing:

Many students get confused between a Dissertation and a Thesis. A thesis is an academic essay or a research paper that is written as a part of a higher degree. The aim of a thesis is to prove your opinion through a statement. It has a specific length limit and takes less time to complete. It is extremely important for a student to complete and submit their thesis on time to obtain a Master’s Degree. On the other hand, a dissertation is an academic piece of writing based on one’s independent research. It is meant to be submitted as a part of one’s PhD , Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree. It can take several months or even years to complete a dissertation. It prepares students to develop problem-solving, project management and numerical skills. The main difference is the purpose of the submission. A Dissertation is meant to be submitted with the aim of projecting the student’s skills and experience throughout the course of their doctoral program. While a Thesis is meant to be submitted to complete one’s master’s degree.
The primary distinction between a thesis and a dissertation is that a thesis is based on previously conducted research.
A dissertation, on the other hand, will almost certainly require the doctorate student to conduct their own research and analysis. Another significant distinction is that a thesis is for master’s students and a dissertation is for PhD students.
The structural difference between the two lies in the length of the document. A dissertation is a lot lengthier than a thesis which is meant to be at least 100 pages long. The outline of both a dissertation and a thesis is quite similar. Below mentioned are the structures:
The structure must include the 5 chapters of a dissertation that are mentioned below:

A thesis must be submitted to complete a PhD Degree while a dissertation is supposed to be part of a research project.
The purpose of submitting a dissertation and a thesis is completely different. A dissertation is an independent research project to obtain a Doctoral Degree in the US, while a thesis is a shorter research project that is required to obtain a Master’s Degree.

When submitting academic work for consideration, there is a lot to consider. You need to be aware of referencing and formatting styles, not to mention your style, tone, and of course, spelling and grammar. But what exactly are you submitting? Is it a thesis, a manuscript, or a dissertation? Knowing the difference will assist in your academic journey.
First and foremost, a thesis consists of a statement. During the writing process, your opinion needs to be investigated. Whether or not it is proven is not relevant; the thesis is a collection of your research and results—whatever they may be. Once you have a thesis statement, it helps to narrow down your research and provides a great starting block for your writing.
While the terms thesis and dissertation are often used interchangeably, some people think of them differently. Dissertations are usually book length, and can consist of years of original research on a topic.

To clarify, a dissertation is a lengthier, more in-depth version of a thesis.
Manuscripts can be considered as condensed parts of a thesis or dissertation. Whereas a thesis has a lengthy introduction, a manuscript is shorter and more to the point. It is possible to write several shorter manuscripts from one thesis since less information is required.
So, if a dissertation is the longest, most in-depth study, a thesis is a shorter version of the same thing. Manuscripts may be produced from sections of dissertations or theses, and are more focused in their content.

Hello Masters and Doctoral Candidates. Congratulations on your near completion of the manuscript and defense for your thesis or dissertation! Now it is time for you to start working with the School of Graduate Studies to submit your manuscript for final approval, copyright, and publication. This is a multi-step process in which you will need to review and submit five forms to the School of Graduate Studies. Those forms, in order, are as follows:
To get started with the process, you will need to send an email to [email protected] . In your initial email, please tell us the names of your Committee Chairperson and the Graduate Coordinator for your program. You will then receive, via email, DocuSign Forms #1 and #2. After you confirm that you have reviewed the first two forms, you will be sent DocuSign Form #3 which provides the School of Graduate Studies with the date that you will defend your work. Upon a successful defense, you will then be sent DocuSign Form #4 to complete and submit. The ETD submission process is concluded when you receive DocuSign Form #5 which will provide you with the instructions on how to upload your publication-ready manuscript. The School of Graduate Studies will then review your manuscript which must be edited, as prescribed, until final approval. No official transcripts can be released until this process is completed .
The entire gradETD process is electronic. Please do not hand-deliver or mail any thesis or dissertation manuscript content to the School of Graduate Studies. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] for assistance.
NOTE : The ETD process for the Fall 2024 semester will begin on Monday, August 26, 2024. At that time, you can begin the ETD process by emailing [email protected] .
To be considered for Fall 2024 graduation, your thesis or dissertation defense date should be scheduled at least two weeks before the submission deadline to the School of Graduate Studies. The recommended defense deadline for the Fall 2024 semester is Friday, October 4, 2024 . This timeframe is imperative for appropriate planning and manuscript review before the School of Graduate Studies approval and eventual graduation. Please note that theses or dissertations that are defended after the recommended defense deadline date may not be reviewed and approved by the School of Graduate Studies in time for Fall 2024 graduation. This will cause your manuscript to be reviewed during the Spring 2025 semester.
The Fall 2024 deadline for submission of theses and dissertations to the School of Graduate Studies is Friday, October 18, 2024, at 3:30 pm EDT . No exceptions!
