PhD by Publication PhD by Publication Goldsmiths, University of London

Course description.

Goldsmiths' PhD by Publication is designed for academics with an existing portfolio of published work addressing a central research question

The PhD by Publication is not offered as an alternative to the traditional PhD programme of study, but as an option for academics who may have entered higher education mid-career and have a body of work not more than 10 years old that can be submitted as part of a doctoral-level thesis.

A submission for PhD by Publication may comprise papers, chapters, monographs, scholarly editions of a text, technical reports, creative practice, artefacts, or curatorial production. Whatever the form of your prior work, it is important that it is compatible with research expertise at Goldsmiths. For details of which subject areas the PhD can be in, please see our list of academic departments and research centres.

Candidates are expected to be based within the UK (and within reasonable travel time to Goldsmiths’ campus) during their programme, to ensure that they are able to maintain regular contact with their department and supervisor. This is to ensure engagement with supervision, training, and the wider research environment of the College and student’s Department.

Candidates who require a Tier 4 visa are not eligible, as the programme is offered only on a part-time basis.

It is expected that those undertaking a PhD by Publication will not already be holders of a doctorate. However, if a candidate has a distinct body of research that they can clearly demonstrate has not formed part of their previous doctorate, their application may be considered.

Course Content

The PhD by Publication is available on a part-time basis only.

You will develop a thesis of 15,000-30,000 words, which will be a contextualised, coherent narrative, and critical appraisal of the portfolio of work you choose to submit alongside it. This submission will be assessed by the standard examination processes for doctoral degrees, including a viva voce examination.

Supervision

You’ll receive academic support and advice from your supervisors, who will be from relevant academic departments. Their role will be to provide you with support and advice on:

  • selecting work from your portfolio to include with your thesis submission
  • the development of your thesis
  • preparation for the viva voce

Your supervisors will work closely with you to ensure that your training needs are met throughout the programme.

You’ll also be expected to give at least one presentation to your peer group, including non-specialists, during your period of registration.

Entry Requirements

You should have a first class undergraduate degree and/or a higher level degree in a relevant subject, and/or appropriate experience. You will also need a body of work not more than 10 years old in a relevant field, which will form the basis for your thesis.

Please be aware, that you can only study full-time with a Tier 4 visa, so unfortunately you will be unable to study this part-time programme if you need a student visa.

International qualifications

We accept a wide range of international qualifications. Find out more about the qualifications we accept from around the world.

UVAccelerate

Accelerate your time to completion of a non-thesis Master’s degree by getting started now!

Who can apply?

Current UVA undergraduate and Sweet Briar College engineering science students can apply to a Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Computer Science (M.C.S.), or Master of Materials Science and Engineering (M.M.S.E.) degree program in the third year of your undergraduate studies. These programs require 30 credits of coursework (35 credits for biomedical engineering) as part of an approved plan of study, and with the right planning, you may be able to get a head start on taking graduate-level courses while finishing your bachelor’s degree.

Save time and money by accelerating your time to completion of a master’s degree!

How it works

Interested UVA undergraduate students should apply to UVAccelerate in March of your third year. Once admissions decisions are released, students admitted through the UVAccelerate program will be offered academic advising from graduate program faculty to identify the fastest path to your master’s degree. While applying in your third year of undergraduate studies may seem early, getting an early admissions decision and personalized advising allows you to minimize your time to degree by taking advantage of things like advanced placement credit and undergraduate electives. Some students who participate in UVAccelerate are able to earn a master’s degree in as little as one additional semester beyond their bachelor’s degree.

Benefits to you

By earning your master’s degree in engineering, you have access to more interesting and challenging job opportunities, accelerated career advancement, and higher earning potential throughout your career. UVA Engineering graduate students report an average starting salary $30,000 higher than bachelor’s graduates in their first job after finishing their degree. UVAccelerate can help you get there as quickly as possible!

How to apply

Complete a graduate application through our online application system starting as early as December 1st . On the Program page of the online application, be sure to check the box indicating that you’re applying through the UVAccelerate program. We also made it easier for you to apply by waiving two of the three required letters of recommendation, making the GRE test-optional, and waiving the $85 application fee for UVA Engineering and BACS undergraduates who apply to UVAccelerate!

You should expect to receive this email from the Office of Graduate Programs at least two weeks prior to ENU open enrollment.

Please note, open enrollment will vary depending on the semester in which you plan to take graduate-level courses. We ask that you refrain from submitting the referenced form until you receive communication on the next steps from the Office of Graduate Programs.

I have been admitted to the program but plan to enroll in graduate courses in my final semester. What steps should I take?

UVAccelerate provides you with the opportunity to take graduate courses where there is space in your course schedule regardless of semester. If you decide to take graduate courses during one semester and not the other, please reach out to us at [email protected] so we can ensure the most updated information is reflected in our records.

KU Medical Center graduate programs earn high marks in U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2024

Nationally high rankings in primary care, physical therapy and in the nurse midwifery program all reflect a commitment to caring for Kansans and beyond.

The University of Kansas Medical Center has a number of programs that were recognized as top graduate programs in the country in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings for 2024. These programs span all three schools of KU Medical Center: the School of Health Professions, the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing.

KU School of Medicine was named one of the best schools for primary care by U.S. News for 2024. In this latest edition of Best Medical Schools, the schools were placed in tiers instead of ranked by number as they were in previous editions. There are four tiers, with Tier 1 medical schools being the highest performing and Tier 4 the lowest. KU School of Medicine placed in Tier 1 for primary care among public and private schools combined.

The Tier 1 placement, which put KU School of Medicine in the top 15 schools for primary care, is consistent with the numerical rankings for primary care released in 2023, in which KU School of Medicine was ranked No. 14.

Numbered rankings were still used for practice areas. KU School of Medicine ranked 10th in the percentage of graduates practicing in health professional shortage areas and 12th in the percentage of graduates providing direct patient care in rural areas. The school ranked 35th in the percentage of graduates practicing in primary care.

“We are pleased to rank in the top tier of medical schools for primary care,” said Akinlolu Ojo, M.D., executive dean of KU School of Medicine. “We believe this reflects our contributions and ongoing commitment to educating the next generation of physicians to serve and care for communities across Kansas and beyond.”

At KU School of Health Professions, the nurse-anesthesia program ranked 10th among public schools, up from 14th in the 2016 ranking, and 22nd overall. The school's speech-language pathology program placed 6th among public schools and 9th overall. The occupational therapy program ranked 11th among public institutions, while the audiology program ranked 15th. And the physical therapy program ranked 5th in the country among public schools, and 11th overall.

“This recognition of our DPT program is highly valuable to us. Our department faculty have national reputations as leaders, with multiple teaching awards and high research productivity, and our student outcomes are exceptional,” said Patricia Kluding, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Science, and Athletic Training at KU School of Health Professions.

At KU School of Nursing, the nurse-midwifery program rose significantly from when the last rankings were released in 2020, jumping from 21st to 8th place overall and from 11th to 7th for public schools.

“We are ecstatic to receive this national recognition of our nurse-midwifery program. Consistent with the mission at KU Medical Center, the nurse-midwifery program is improving lives and communities by educating highly qualified clinicians through excellence and innovation,” said Cara Busenhart, Ph.D., program director of Nurse-Midwifery Education at KU School of Nursing.

In September 2023, the bachelor’s program at KU School of Nursing took the No. 17 spot for all public schools in the 2024 Best Colleges rankings released by U.S. News, and it placed 23rd for public and private schools combined.

Training the Next Generation of Data Communicators

All data tell a story, and a NASA-funded project is helping college and university students and teachers learn how to work with and communicate discoveries from data acquired by NASA's Ecosystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station ( ECOSTRESS ) mission. The project was created by professors at Chapman University in Orange, CA, and involves collaborators from minority-serving institutions across the U.S. and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The project also has an easy-to-remember acronym: ICE CREAM, or Integrating Communication of ECOSTRESS into Community Research, Education, Applications, and Media.

The project links research, forward-thinking teaching techniques, and multimedia science communication with ECOSTRESS data. Moreover, the project's applied science work incorporates elements of NASA's Earth Science to Action strategy to accelerate the use of NASA data to support policy and decision-making for society's well-being.

ICE CREAM is led by Principal Investigator Dr. Joshua B. Fisher, Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Policy in the Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University. Fisher was the founding ECOSTRESS science lead and currently is the science lead for Hydrosat , a private company that uses satellite data and imagery to measure water stress in agriculture and enhance food security, public safety, and the environment.

"Students are taught to capture emerging climate events that ECOSTRESS can detect and they can immediately create maps and visuals [from the data]," says Fisher. "And then we want them to be able to describe their findings effectively with the media and the general public."

Project Structure and Goals

ICE CREAM includes a series of more than a dozen tutorials that walk students through various projects, challenges, and activities using ECOSTRESS data.

Graphic listing 9 ICE CREAM Tutorial Modules with images below the brief descriptions

ICE CREAM has three primary objectives:

  • Develop an ECOSTRESS project-based learning course to drive science and applications.
  • Train graduate and undergraduate students in minority-serving institutions on the principles of remote sensing through ECOSTRESS and how to communicate data findings to a range of audiences. This will also help increase the overall diversity of students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
  • Conduct external impact assessments of the project to provide actionable metrics for the project's development and use. These external reviews will also examine how engaging in ICE CREAM aids in the development of science interest and identity, with particular emphasis on students from minority-serving institutions.

The foundation of the tutorials is data from NASA's ECOSTRESS mission. ECOSTRESS is installed on the International Space Station and globally measures the temperature of plants to better understand how much water they need and how they respond to stress. Thirty-seven ECOSTRESS data products are available through NASA's Earthdata Search. These data enable students to conduct investigations into topics including urban heat islands, environmental justice, ecosystem health, and agricultural economics.

"Once students get interested in a particular event, they can pursue it further. It transitions from an interesting observation into research, and turns into their final product," says ICE CREAM co-lead Dr. Gregory Goldsmith, associate professor of biological sciences and the Associate Dean for Research and Development in the Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University. "Over the next semester they can conduct independent research, creating a poster presentation or even a paper for publication."

As Goldsmith notes, this progressive learning helps train many students and accelerates the science and applications of the science. Funding is available to support student attendance at conferences to present their findings as well as to publish their research in professional journals.

The Student Experience

Chapman University students Holland Hatch, a rising senior, and Ashley Agatep, a rising sophomore, are working through the ICE CREAM tutorials. Both are environmental science and policy majors, and say the tutorials not only increase their knowledge of accessing and working with NASA data, but also in the many ways data can be used.

One of Hatch's investigations compared data from the ECOSTRESS water use efficiency (WUE) product to WUE observed by AmeriFlux towers over a longleaf pine forest in coastal South Carolina, an investigation she is continuing with WUE comparisons at additional AmeriFlux sites. Hatch's work also is being used by the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer. "I definitely gained more confidence in my ability to quickly and efficiently produce meaningful work involving the data," says Hatch. "As I became more comfortable working with the data, I began to discover many new opportunities in which the data could be used."

Agatep says ICE CREAM opened her eyes to the massive capabilities of remote sensing. Building on her interests in environmental justice and health disparities, she used ECOSTRESS data to map urban hotspots in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Santa Ana, CA. A local environmental justice organization utilized the data map she created, and other organizations have shown an interest in her work and its application in heat mitigation efforts. "Using ECOSTRESS data, I've been able to model catastrophic urban heatwaves worldwide, including in Pakistan, the Southern U.S., and Italy, and have utilized these data to look at socioeconomic disparities in urban heat exposure," she says.

Observations and Next Steps

Fisher notes that the project is succeeding in accomplishing its goals. An independent external assessment of the project shows that students are gaining skill and comfort in using ECOSTRESS data, finding a high degree of interest and inspiration through the tutorials, internalizing the skills they are learning, and taking these skills with them into future projects and research.

Fisher also notes the success in furthering the ICE CREAM objective of using the project to help increase diversity in STEM studies.

"We have over 12 universities and colleges signed up to adopt the course; 100% of them are [classified as] minority-serving institutions, historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, Native American-serving non-tribal institutions, or American and Pacific Islander-serving institutions," says Fisher. "Increasing diversity in the geosciences requires significant intervention, and we have a framework in which we think we can break through this long-standing barrier."

A new ICE CREAM website  is live and Fisher and his team plan to add Spanish language and American Sign Language captioning to the tutorials. Fisher observes that ICE CREAM is showing great success in its overall goal of training the next generation of data communicators and instilling in them an appreciation for data.

"You don’t have to be a remote sensing scientist; you don't have to be an environmental scientist or an engineer," says Fisher. "You can be an artist, you can be a journalist, and you can do [research] however you want to do it in your own realm of interest and contribute."

Chapman students Hatch and Agatep agree. Hatch's investigations into water use continue, as does her use of NASA data. "I have found NASA data to be a very beneficial tool in my research," says Hatch. "I am excited to continue to incorporate the data into my education and career."

For Agatep, the tutorials are enabling her to explore her interests in applying NASA data to environmental justice efforts, building meaningful connections to active organizations, and creating tangible impacts on her community. "The course helped me find my passion and it truly was a life changing experience," she says.

  • If you plan to attend graduate school, it's important to understand the costs up front.
  • Grants, scholarships, and fellowships help pay for school without unnecessary loans.
  • Other options to pay for school include an assistantship or a part-time job.

Free money first: grants and scholarships

You may be considering graduate school to further your education. But the high costs to attend grad school might make you think twice about committing to more classes.

The good news is that grad students have plenty of options to cover those costs. However, the best options are funds you don't have to repay.

Research is key

Grants, scholarships, and fellowships are all forms of gift aid — meaning they allow you to fund grad school without having to pay the money back.

In general, students who qualify for state or federal grants will access the funds by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In contrast, scholarships are often targeted at specific groups, like athletes or women in STEM. Most scholarships require you to submit a unique application to share your qualifications for the award.

Finally, fellowships are typically awarded by schools and other organizations to students on a merit basis. Many fellowships go beyond covering your tuition to provide a stipend for living expenses.

"Utilizing grants, scholarships, and fellowships as financial aid options enables students to substantially minimize or even completely eradicate the necessity for student loans," says Trinity Owen, NFEC Certified Financial Education Instructor and owner of The Pay at Home Parent .

As a graduate student, relying on grants, scholarships, and fellowships is better than taking out loans to pay for school. When you graduate from your program, repaying your student loans can have a substantial negative impact on your financial situation. Graduating without any debt — or with a smaller debt burden — can lead to a more comfortable life after graduation.

The first step is to fill out the FAFSA. Depending on your financial situation, you may qualify for need-based financial aid. Even if you didn't qualify for this type of aid as an undergraduate, a change to your dependency status or a lower income could have a big impact on your access to gift aid.

Merit-based

Merit-based scholarships are often awarded for academic or other achievements, often pertaining to the field you're going into.

Subject-specific

Subject-specific fellowships are usually merit-based opportunities to study a particular subject. The length of a fellowship might range from a few months to several years. Typically, you'll get a stipend for living expenses on top of your tuition costs.

Paying for graduate school is often not as simple as finding a single grant to cover the entire cost. Instead, you might piece together smaller grants and scholarships to make your graduate school experience financially feasible.

The reality is that any free money you obtain will have a positive impact on your financial future. Below we will explore how much you stand to save if your entire graduate education costs $50,000:

Employer tuition reimbursement

Many large companies offer educational assistance to their employees. While you might have to go to school at a different pace, getting through school debt-free might be worth it.

Graduate assistantships

Many graduate programs offer assistantships to their students. In exchange for teaching classes or conducting research, the school may waive your tuition and possibly provide a living stipend. You can find out more about these opportunities directly from the administrator of your program.

Fellowships

Fellowships are usually merit-based opportunities to study a particular subject. The length of a fellowship might range from a few months to several years. Typically, you'll get a stipend for living expenses on top of your tuition costs.

Start with the FAFSA

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, to determine eligibility for federal loans and work-study. The FAFSA is a form that determines what types of student aid you qualify for. You'll need to provide various documents to determine how much financial aid you'll receive.

Types of federal loans

Direct unsubsidized loans: With direct unsubsidized loans , you are responsible for the interest that accrues during all periods.

Direct PLUS loans (for graduate or professional students): A Direct PLUS Loan is the federal option for parent loans. PLUS stands for Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students. You can use them to pay for expenses not covered by other financial aid offered by your child's school.

You can find scholarships available through countless organizations targeted to specific groups. Consider using a scholarship search engine, like Big Future by College Board , to find opportunities.

Before committing to a loan, shop around for the best rates and repayment options — not all private loans are created equal. For borrowers with limited credit history or lower credit scores, consider having a cosigner on your loan .

TEACH grants

If you are planning to pursue a career in teaching, you can tap into up to $4,000 per year in grants. At the end of your education, you must teach in a high-need field as a full-time teacher at a school that serves low-income students for at least four years. If you don't meet the service obligation, the grant will be converted into a loan.

Fulbright grants

Fulbright grants allow U.S. citizens to pursue graduate school abroad.

State-sponsored grants

Many states offer grants to students based on financial need or to those pursuing education in a specific field. Your school's financial aid office can highlight any state-sponsored grants you may qualify for.

Organizational grants

Many organizations offer grants to their members. If you or your family is part of an organization, find out if they have grants available for graduate students.

If you can't afford grad school, don't give up! Explore all options, consider part-time programs, or research schools with lower tuition.

Make sure you remain cautious of taking on too much debt. Borrow only what you need and research affordable programs.

Yes, there are some student loan forgiveness programs for graduate school, such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and certain state-based programs.

Paying for grad school: Conclusion

Paying for graduate school requires careful planning and research. By exploring multiple funding options, prioritizing free money and lower-cost loans, and managing your finances wisely, you can reduce your debt burden and focus on your academic goals.
