With more than a third of adults in the USA being classed as obese, and many more being overweight, it has never been more important to participate in sports. People that do sport on a regular basis are burning more calories than those that don’t, and are therefore less likely to end up overweight. Being a healthy weight means that you will be less likely to die young and suffer from heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes and a range of other conditions, and if you already eat well, it can give you an extra calorie allowance so you can treat yourself without feeling guilty about it.

As well as improving cardiovascular health and fitness, exercising is also good for the musculoskeletal system, making muscles more supple and toned, and improving the strength of bones and joints. People who do sports will be stronger and more able to lift and carry heavy things, which is also always useful, and they are less likely to become really weak and frail as they get older because their bodies are strong. Furthermore, doing sports can improve mental health as well as physical health, with exercise being helpful for people with depression and a range of other mental health issues, because it releases good chemicals into our brains. It also makes people feel better about their bodies, which can make them happier, and reduces the risk of eating disorders and crash dieting, as people make more sensible, healthy changes to their lifestyle.

Sports also allow people to develop personally. Social and communication skills can be learned and developed through sport. Teamwork, for example, is naturally learned through participating in team sports and games. Communication skills can really be honed, as they are at the center of any team’s success, and a lack of them leads to failure. Many people will also develop leadership skills through sport, often discovering abilities that they never knew they even had.

Many people’s self-esteem improves through sport as they discover things that they are good at and improve their body. Participating in any competitive sport also improves our ability to handle pressure and still perform well, as well as teaching us how to win and lose graciously. All in all, the fact that playing sport is good for us is completely undeniable, because it helps our minds and bodies, and ultimately means that we will be living longer, happier lives.

  • Games are a must for kids for their overall development.
  • Often, people who play sports end up being motivated to push ahead.

Essay On Importance Of Sports -10 Lines, Short And Long Essay for Children

A sport is an important part of a kid’s growing years. Sports contribute to a child’s physical and mental growth and thus must be encouraged. Just like nutrients are necessary for a healthy diet for nourishing the body, games are crucial for a kid’s holistic body and mental growth. Playing a sport or any physical activity is equally important for adults too. In the present era, when a lot of us have a sedentary lifestyle, playing sports or any game helps us keep fit.

Playing games is the easiest and most fun way to promote a child’s health. If a child is not involved in any sports activity, then there are high chances of the kid having problems in healthy growth, both mentally and physically.

Playing a sport is good for kids. It helps teach them healthy habits and gives them good physical and mental growth. Sports help kids turn into strong individuals with positive traits, and it also helps develop their personalities. Playing any physical sport keeps our heart and lungs healthy and strong, vital for leading a healthy life. Involving in physical activity like playing a competitive game instils good values and helps them become better humans. That is why sports competitions are held at schools and colleges. Players who perform well at the regional level may play for the state, national or international levels. Thus, sports give us promising careers.

Taking part in sports must be encouraged from a very young age. As the first step, writing an essay for class 3 or other primary classes on the importance of sports can be particularly useful.

It is no secret that sports activities are the keys to healthy living and healthy thinking. When children regularly engage in physical gaming activity, we can say they are walking towards building a good life. They will have a good physique and, at the same time, the power of critical thinking, which is required to live in today’s highly competitive world. Playing games teaches us certain life skills like teamwork, leadership, and instant thinking in difficult moments. Most importantly, it instils confidence in us to carry on any challenging work. No theory class can teach us such life skills as that of sports. Playing games reduces stress levels, fights certain diseases, acts as an immune booster, and builds up a sense of responsibility.

We can choose a sport as per our liking, indoor or outdoor. But the main point is that we must spend a part of the day playing competitive games and keep learning from them. We must also remember that when it is raining, we can always choose an indoor game but we must play outdoor games like football and cricket whenever we can. Outdoor games help in the overall development of our mind and body.

I like it when I play games with my friends during the games period. My friends and I participate in the annual sports event in our school. More than winning, I like to spend a wonderful day with my friends playing all sorts of enjoyable games.

A sports essay will teach kids the importance of sports and how regularly playing a sport can enhance the quality of their future lives. They will get to know that by maintaining good physical and mental strength by involving in competitive games, they can be successful and happy in their lives.

1. What Are The Most Common Sports Played In India?

While cricket may top the chart, it is not the only popular sport in India. Hockey, badminton, football, and kabaddi are among some popular games in the country.

2. What Is The National Sport Of India?

Hockey is the national sport of India.

3. Which Is The Most Popular Sport In The World?

Football/Soccer is the most popular sport globally. Soccer is estimated to host the highest number of players from all over the world.

Playing sports must not be an option for a child, and it must be accessible to every kid across the globe if we want to raise a healthy generation. As a parent, we would like the best for our kids, and the best could simply be a game of their liking.

How tennis uniquely benefits your body—compared to other sports

Playing tennis can lead to healthier bones, greater range of motion, increased cognitive function, and greater longevity than with any other sport.

The upper body of a tennis player mid-serve, her serving arm and head turned upward as she tracks the tennis ball, which is seen at the top of the image.

With the world now tuning into the Paris Olympics, and the U.S. Open beginning later this month, many people are again marveling at a sport that has been around since the 11 th   century.

"Tennis demonstrates the power, grace, intellect, wit, balance, speed, joy, sorrow, and sheer determination of human beings," says Brian Hainline, a neurologist, president of the United States Tennis Association, and former chief medical officer of the NCAA.

And though there's no denying that tennis is riveting to watch and a lot of fun to play, engaging in the sport is also good for your mental and physical health.

"Tennis has endured for so long because it can be played at multiple levels—from social doubles to highly competitive singles—and challenges the whole body in many ways including speed, endurance, strength, technical skills, and strategic planning," says Benjamin Levine, director of the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Unmatched physical advantages

Playing tennis has   been shown to   supply a host of physical health benefits including reduced obesity and diabetes risk, improved coordination, increased energy levels, and a stronger heart.

The frequent racquet swings also maintain and grow lean muscle mass in one's shoulders and arms;   core and stabilizer muscles are improved with constant body rotation and movement;   and the sprinting, posture, and prolonged engagement strengthen leg, back, and foot muscles.

"Unlike many other sports, tennis requires multifaceted use of the musculoskeletal system to play well including with quick starting and stopping, and sudden changes in direction," says James Gladstone, a physician and system chief in the division of sports medicine at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City.

The activity   also contributes   to "stronger, thicker, and healthier bones—especially for those who start at a young age," says Babette Pluim, a physician, sports and exercise medicine consultant, and the chief medical adviser of the Royal Netherlands Lawn Tennis Association.

She explains that this occurs as the repeated movements associated with the activity form new bone tissue and help facilitate the breakdown of old tissue. "The combination of mechanical stress, hormonal responses, increased blood flow, and enhanced nutrient absorption associated with the exercise work together to strengthen bones and improve overall skeletal health," she adds.

Tennis also improves flexibility, balance, and range of motion, "because flexibility is necessary in tennis to reach, to stretch, to pivot, and to de-accelerate after each burst of movement," says Hainline.

The sport reduces one's risk of heart disease as well, in part, because its high-intensity movements followed by short bouts of rest, "mimic prolonged moderate-intensity exercise,"   says Rami Hashish, a physical therapist and body performance consultant at the National Biomechanics Institute in Los Angeles. "This means it’s great for blood flow and for strengthening the cardiac muscle."

Because of such factors, tennis   lowers blood pressure ,   improves one's resting heart rate , and   increases healthy lipid profiles   to improve cholesterol levels. These are among the reasons "playing tennis on a regular basis has   been shown to   lower overall risk of heart disease by up to 56 percent," says Jessica Schwartz, a physical therapist and spokesperson of the American Physical Therapy Association.

It's also a contributing factor in why tennis players live longer than participants in many other sports. Illustrating this, Danish cardiologist Peter Schnohr led the famed 25-year   Copenhagen City Heart Study , which examined the connection between various sports and life expectancy.

He says longevity improved more for tennis than for any other sport included in the research: soccer players extended their lives 4.7 years, cyclists 3.7 years, swimmers 3.4 years, and joggers 3.2 years. Incredibly, tennis players extended their lives by 9.7 years, which he attributes to the sport's cardiovascular and musculoskeletal advantages and the social support the game is known for.

"This becomes apparent as social isolation is among the strongest predictors of reduced life expectancy," he explains.

Mental health benefits worth rallying around

Playing tennis is also good for your mental health.

"The sport requires constant strategic planning, quick decision making, and adaptability, which stimulate brain function and challenge cognitive abilities," says Megan   Holmes, a kinesiologist and the director of the Physical Activity and Wellness Laboratory at Mississippi State   University.

The repeated motions associated with playing "bathe our hippocampus with a protein called the Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor," echoes Schwartz, which helps improve neuroplasticity and prevents cognitive decline related to aging. Hasish says it improves memory function as well.

Research also shows   tennis participants experiencing "better eye movement tracking and quicker reaction times than non-active individuals," says Pluim, adding that tennis players also outperform other athletes when it comes to reaction times and temporal processing.

Additional research   further shows tennis players experiencing "significantly lower levels of stress, depression, and anxiety compared to non-players," adds Gladstone.

How to get started

To reap such benefits and get started with the sport, Hasish says it's essential to learn the basics, including equipment needs, rules and conduct, and techniques related to grip, strokes, footwork, and serve returns. These can be best learned, he says, "by taking lessons from a coach or by joining a local tennis club."

He also recommends investing in a high-quality racket suitable for your skill level and getting comfortable tennis shoes that provide adequate support.

"Wearing the right gear can enhance your performance and prevent injuries," he explains.

When playing, Schwartz stresses the importance of listening to your body, staying hydrated, and taking breaks when needed. "Also, don't play on a wet court or during inclement weather—and be sure to build up to the number of days you play per week to avoid injury," she advises.

Leslie Echols, an avid tennis player and an associate professor at Missouri State University, adds that anyone can start playing the sport at any age, regardless of current skill or activity level. "I signed up for my first tennis lesson as a 40th birthday present to myself," she explains. "Doing so was one of the best decisions of my life and I plan to keep playing until the day I die."

5 Reasons Why the Olympics Are Important

The Eiffel Tower with the logo of the Olympic Games.

The Olympics are often regarded as the world’s foremost multi-sports event, featuring thousands of athletes from more than 200 countries as they compete in a variety of competitions for gold, silver and bronze medals.

“What makes the Olympics unique is that you have all these athletes from around the world coming together to compete in so many different sports,” said Jason Bocarro , the Owens-Shelton Distinguished Professor of Leadership with a Global Perspective in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at NC State.

Held every two years, the Olympics alternate between the summer and winter seasons. The summer competitions range from archery and basketball to gymnastics and swimming, while the winter competitions range from alpine skiing and bobsleigh to figure skating and snowboarding.

People from all around the world tune in to watch the physical prowess of Olympic athletes as they perform feats of strength, speed, endurance and skill. The first day of the 2024 Paris Olympics alone drew more than 32 million viewers.

But the Olympics are more than just a celebration of athletic achievements; they’re a platform for promoting solidarity, according to Jonathan Casper , also a professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management.

“The Olympics are unlike any other sporting event in the world because of their capacity to unite people through a shared enthusiasm for sport on a global scale,” Casper said.

Casper and Bocarro have both spent years studying the legacy of mega-sporting events like the Olympics. While these events aren’t always environmentally friendly or financially beneficial for host cities, they can have positive impacts.

Some examples from the Olympics include:

Cultural Exchange

  • The Olympics bring together athletes and spectators from around the world to a single host city, creating a melting pot of languages, traditions and customs.
  • Olympic athletes and spectators have the opportunity to explore the host city’s culture — from food and fashion to music and art. Even those watching from other countries can appreciate the city’s architecture and atmosphere.
  • The Olympic Village serves as a microcosm of the world, providing a shared living space where athletes learn about each other’s customs and traditions.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

  • The Olympics celebrate diversity and inclusion on a global scale by hosting more than 10,000 athletes from around the world for athletic competition, irrespective of social background, gender, race, sexual orientation or political belief.
  • Gender-based discrimination is still rampant in the world of sports. The Olympics provide a platform for promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls, with an equal number of male and female athletes competing.

Sport Marketing and Development

  • The Olympics promote non-traditional sports to a global audience. Skateboarding experienced increased interest following its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
  • Olympic athletes can serve as positive role models for kids, especially when they learn about the trials and tribulations they had to overcome.
  • Surveys show that the Olympics attract more female viewers, presenting an opportunity for increased sponsorships and media coverage.
  • The Olympics showcase the expertise of smaller countries in certain sports. Cuba, for example, ranks only second to the United States in boxing.

National and Civic Pride

  • The Olympics serve as the ultimate show of national pride and identity. While countries don’t compete in the Olympics, athletes represent their countries in individual and team competitions.
  • One global poll conducted by the BBC found that a majority of people in 18 out of 21 countries said their nations’ performance at the 2012 London Olympics was “important to their national pride.”
  • Research shows that some individuals also feel civic pride when their cities host the Olympics and other mega sporting events. This is largely due to increased visibility, whether it’s through tourism or broadcasting.

Sustainability

  • The relationship between mega sporting events and sustainability is fraught with controversy as many experts argue that organizers lack transparency and often fail to minimize their negative impacts on the environment.
  • Research shows that mega sporting events can cause increases in carbon emissions related to transportation, energy usage and waste generation.
  • But the Olympics and other mega sporting events can help to raise awareness of environmental issues. The 2024 Paris Olympics, for example, brought attention to pollution levels in the Seine River.

Olympic officials address gender eligibility as boxers prepare to fight

importance of sports easy essay

PARIS – The case of two Olympic boxers has drawn attention to a thorny issue: Who and what determines which female athletes can compete.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan both were disqualified from the 2023 women’s boxing world championships when they reportedly failed gender eligibility tests.

But this week, the International Olympic Committee confirmed the two boxers have been cleared to compete here at the Paris Games , as they both did at the Tokyo Games in 2021. The issues of so-called gender verification or sex testing have fueled discussion at the Olympics as the fighters prepare to enter the ring at North Paris Arena.

Khelif, a silver medalist at the 2022 world championships, is scheduled to fight Thursday against Angela Carini of Italy in the welterweight division at 146 pounds. Lin, a two-time world champion, is scheduled to fight Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan in the featherweight division at 126 pounds.

“Yeah, it’s really tricky," Australian boxer Tiana Echegaray told reporters Tuesday when asked about the situation. "I don’t know exactly what their circumstances are."

IOC spokesman Mark Adams indicated Tuesday no personal information about the boxers' medical histories would be disclosed. "They've been competing in boxing for a very long time," Adams told reporters. “They've achieved all the eligibility requirements in terms of sex and age. We're following the rules in place in Tokyo."

Who's in charge of boxing?

At the Summer Olympics, when it comes to gender eligibility, the IOC defers to the international federations that govern each of the 32 sports.

The IOC does provide a framework to the international federations . But it's “nonbinding."

In other words, it’s not up to the IOC. And the situation has grown especially complicated with boxing.

Last year the IOC banished the International Boxing Association (IBA), long plagued with scandal and controversy that jeopardized the future of Olympic boxing. In fact, the IOC denied IBA the right to run Olympic boxing during the Tokyo Games in 2021 and instead turned over control to an ad-hoc unit.

Opinion: Olympic female boxers are being attacked. Let's just slow down and look at the facts

With that ad-hoc unit in charge, Kehlif and Lin both competed at the Tokyo Olympics. Neither won a medal.

But the IBA has maintained control of the world championships and gender eligibility rules. And after Lin won gold and Kehlif won bronze at the event in March 2023, officials announced the boxers had failed medical eligibility tests and stripped them of the medals.

IBA president Umar Kremlev said DNA tests “proved they had XY chromosomes and were thus excluded."

What's the eligibility criteria?

A passport could be key, based on comments from Adams, the IOC spokesman.

“I would just say that everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules," he said. “They are women in their passports and it is stated that is the case.”

Thursday Adams added that the issues with the previous tests for the boxers "was not a transgender issue, there's been some misreporting on that in press. ... These women have been competing as women for many years.

"What I would say just quickly on testosterone is, the testosterone (test) is not a perfect test. Many women can have testosterone, even what would be called 'male levels' and still be women and still compete as women. So this is not a panacea − this idea that suddenly you test, do one test for testosterone. Each sport needs to deal with this issue but I think we agreed, I hope we're agreed, we're not going to go back to the bad old days of 'sex testing'. That would be a bad idea."

In the past, other eligibility standards have hinged on science.

Caster Semenya, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in track and field in 2012 and 2016, was forced to give up competing in the 800 meters because her testosterone levels were too high based on tests administered by World Athletics, the sport’s international federation previously known as the IAAF.

Semenya was assigned female at birth. She said she was told at age 18 that she has XY chromosomes and naturally had high levels of testosterone.

Khelif and Lin have not publicly addressed details of their medical histories regarding the tests.

The issue of eligibility surfaced as a source of controversy in the United States in 2022 when swimmer Lia Thomas became the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA championship.

At the time, the NCAA required transgender female athletes to have undergone one year of testosterone suppression treatment to be eligible to compete on a women's team in any sport. The NCAA has been under pressure to update its guidelines after the NAIA banned all transgender athletes from competing in women's sports.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a decision in June by World Aquatics, the international federation for swimming, that prevented Thomas from competing in elite competitions through World Aquatics or USA Swimming.

Who are these two boxers?

Lin, 28, has been fighting as an amateur for more than a decade, according to BoxRec, a widely regarded boxing site.

She made her official amateur debut about three months shy of her 18th birthday, winning at the 2013 AIBA World Women’s Championships. She won gold medals at the world championships in 2019 and 2022.

At 5-foot-9, she often has enjoyed a height advantage while amassing a record of 40-14 with one knockout. The record does not reflect the four fights she won at the 2023 world championships before her disqualification, which resulted in the outcome of the fights being changed to “no contest.’’

She lost her last fight – a split-decision defeat against Brazil’s Jucielen Cerqueira Romeu in April at the 2024 USA Boxing International Invitational in Pueblo, Colorado.

Khelif, 25, made her amateur debut at the 2018 Balkan Women's Tournament. She won a silver medal at the 2022 world championships.

At 5-foot-10, she also has enjoyed a height advantage while amassing a record of 36-9 with four knockouts, according to BoxRec. That does not include the three fights she won at the 2023 world championships before her disqualification resulted in the fights being changed to “no contest.’’

In one of those fights, Khelif stopped her opponent by TKO.

Dynasty mode is one of the crown jewels of EA Sports College Football 25 , thanks in no small part to its incredibly detailed, complicated, and intricate recruiting system . Nothing is more important to building a college football powerhouse than the talent you’re able to bring in year in and year out, but recruiting the best players in the country isn’t easy, especially if you’re trying to bring a smaller school within striking distance of the playoff picture.

To help you build the CFB champions of your dreams, we’ve put together a list of tips for how to level-up your recruiting game and land the best prospects in the country in College Football 25 .

Study your Team Needs spreadsheet

College Football 25’s team needs page for Boise State in Dynasty mode

It’s entirely possible to track your roster’s shortcomings by hand, but thankfully College Football 25 doesn’t make you do that kind of work. Instead, you should spend a significant amount of your recruiting time in the Team Needs spreadsheet — which you can find by pressing the right stick while in the recruiting menu.

This screen will let you know which positions you’re currently light at, and which ones you’ll need more of because you’ve got exiting seniors or players expected to declare for the draft. It will also let you know how many players at each position you’re targeting on your prospect list, and how many you’ve already got committed this season. You shouldn’t feel limited to only recruiting positions of need, but they should be the first bases you cover each recruiting season, and they’re particularly important in the offseason when the Transfer Portal rears around (more on that later). — AG

Focus on the big fish early, but don’t get your heart set on them

A five-star recruit that has signed with another program in College Football 25’s Dynasty menu

The early fall is time for hope in football programs all across the country, both for a better season than the one before, and for all those five-star recruits that barely paid your program a passing glance. You get more hours in the pre-season than you will the rest of the year, so take big shots. Send the House for the five-star who has you listed 8th, and gamble on any high-quality recruits you can. While the chances are probably slim, you might get lucky with a couple of players who happen to match your program just right.

But hope isn’t a guarantee, so it’s best to have a backup plan. While you may land the player of your dreams, especially if you’re at a bigger school, the chances are good that most of the 5-stars are going somewhere with a little more prestige than your burgeoning dynasty can muster just yet. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t chase them for a while. — AG

Find the prospects other teams missed

A screenshot from EA Sports College Football 25 depicting a Texas Longhorns player in the midst of a pass, as his teammates block an oncoming opposing player

My current Dynasty file is with New Mexico, which starts as a one-star program. That means there are very few four-star prospects who will even give me the time of day (and even fewer five-star prospects).

In the preseason stage of recruiting, I follow the advice above: Find every four- and five-star prospect that will even listen to me, and offer scholarships to the ones I would want on my team. By the time the season starts, most of them end up off my board, because they’ve been offered by bigger schools that I simply can’t compete with. But this also leads to the crucial part: Identifying the best prospects that bigger schools overlooked

It’s actually pretty easy: In Week 0, I filter prospects by “five-star recruits” and “four-star recruits,” respectively, and then sort it by offers received. (The format for this column is Y for if you’ve offered the prospect, N for if you haven’t, and then their number of total offers in parentheses – you’re looking for a 0 there). Every single elite recruit without any offers is getting an offer from me.

Using this strategy, I’ve been able to land at least four four-star recruits in each of my three recruiting classes at New Mexico. Later in the recruiting cycle, I fill out the rest of my class with solid three- and two-star prospects, but being able to land these overlooked elite recruits has made a huge difference. — PV

The recommended tab is your friend, but don’t rely on it alone

The recommended tab of the College Football 25 Dynasty menu

EA Sports College Football 25 ’s recruiting system features a recommended tab, which surfaces players the game thinks you should target. This largely shows you players that already have you in their top 10, or realistic targets in pipeline states. I find this to be an easy way to find solid recruits to fill out the rest of my class later in the recruiting cycle, but I tend to ignore it at the very beginning unless there are big time prospects that are considering my school (but I’ll likely find those anyway). — PV

Use your pipelines

The recruiting screen of the College Football 25 Dynasty menu showing the active pipelines for New Mexico

Pipelines are a crucial mechanic in EA Sports College Football 25 , as both your school and your coaches have them. Basically, pipelines give you bonuses to recruits from certain regions of the country. Use this! If all else is equal, it is better to spend your hours on a recruit from a pipeline region than one who isn’t – you’re simply going to get more bang for your buck. That doesn’t mean you should totally box out recruits from non-pipeline regions (sometimes, you can land them!), but it’s worth prioritizing regions that you already have a footprint in, just like real life.

At New Mexico, that means every season my first targets are the top players in the state of New Mexico, followed by the best players in Texas and California that the big schools in those states aren’t offering. Occasionally, I’ll pick up players from other states, but that’s where the bulk of my recruiting classes are coming from. — PV

Use your hours wisely

The hours screen on the recruiting menu for College Football 25’s Dynasty menu

You have a limited number of hours each week to spend on recruiting actions, and those hours are even more limited if you’re a small school. So how do you spend them? I tend to max available hours on my biggest targets – the four- or five-star recruits – and spend as much as I can there until they have committed to my school or locked me out. At that point, I move on to the three- and two-star recruits, scouting them (more on that in a second) and spending my hours on them.

After you get to know a recruit well enough, you unlock the option to “Hard Sell” or “Soft Sell.” This allows you to make a more targeted pitch to the recruit, highlighting three specific areas you want to focus on. This is best used when your program’s strengths line up with the recruits priorities (which will be shown with a check mark on the recruiting tab). If you’re able to sell them well on all three of their priorities at once, it’s going to help you out massively on the recruiting trail. If they don’t align, your hours might be better spent elsewhere. — PV

When to scout and when not to scout

A randomly generated player profile from College Football 25’s Dynasty scouting menu

You have the option to scout recruits, learning more about their attributes, and if you fully scout them, the game will tell you whether they are a gem (with a green gem icon), a bust (with a red X over a gem icon), or neither. Think of a gem as a player whose actual ratings are equivalent to a star rating above them, and a bust as the opposite. So a three-star gem is more like a four-star recruit, and a three-star bust is more like a two-star recruit.

When to scout depends largely on the program you’re running and what kind of recruits you want in the door, but in my save file with New Mexico, I don’t scout any four- or five-star recruits ever. Even if they are busts, they will still benefit my program. I do scout almost all three- and two-star recruits I am considering, to try and prioritize gems. If possible, I try to do some scouting in the preseason, but lately that’s been waiting until midseason so that I can maximize my limited available hours on just the four- and five-star recruits I’m targeting.

One other note, which we’ll follow up on in a second: Don’t scout players in the Transfer Portal. Because they are known entities in college, there isn’t the degree of mystery that there is with high school players, and their listed star rating is their real one. There are no gems or busts in the Transfer Portal. — PV

The Transfer Portal is here to help, but don’t bank on it

Donovan Edwards from Michigan University running the ball while being chased by an Ohio State defender in EA Sports College Football 25

The Transfer Portal is one of the most helpful tools in the recruiting process. At the end of every season, players unhappy with their current team situation can throw themselves into the whirlpool of the Portal, opening themselves up to offers from teams all around the country — including yours. This is the perfect way to fill out some depth for your roster, or to chase one or two more stars before you get ready to start your next season, but you shouldn’t count on it to fill all the gaps on your team. There’s no telling exactly who will be in the Transfer Portal each year or how good they’ll be.

For this reason, it’s best to approach the Portal by looking for any stars within your grasp, as well as maybe a third or fourth string player at a couple positions, rather than counting on getting a surefire starter who was unhappy at their previous school. — AG

What you need to know about Visits

A randomly generated player profile in College Football 25’s Dynasty mode for the player Sam Gooch on the visit screen

Visits are a particularly effective and important recruiting tool that becomes available after a player has listed your school in their top 5 choice. From there you can invite them to your campus for a home gameday. During their stay, you can have them focus on one element of your program. Ideally for this you’ll want to choose a category that’s important to them (has a checkmark next to it on their scouting sheet) as well as something you’re rated highly on, ideally with a B grade or higher.

While these visits are a great way to seal the deal with recruits, there are a lot of nuances to doing them right. For instance, you’ll lose influence with the player you’re recruiting if you lose the game the week of their visit. Even more importantly, you can schedule multiple players to visit on the same week, which can give you either complementary bonuses or conflicting penalties. If you have a quarterback and a wide receiver both visit on week 8, they’ll compliment each other and each boost the other’s interest. On the other hand, if you have something like three cornerbacks all visiting at the same time, their interest will all drop because they don’t feel you’re as interested in them specifically.

All of this leads to visits being a bit of an imprecise science, but still a very important tool to get used to in your recruiting adventures. — AG

The end is not necessarily the end

Colorado Buffaloes wide receiver Travis Hunter makes a diving touchdown catch in a screenshot from EA Sports College Football 25

Sometimes, a recruit can seemingly lock you out – but that’s not always the end of things. Each recruit has a Dealbreaker – one element of a school that they prioritize above all else. Some of those Dealbreakers are fluid – Playing Style, Playing Time, Championship Contender can all change over the course of the season. If a recruit commits to a school, and then their Dealbreaker is no longer valid with that school, they could still de-commit and sign with you on National Signing Day.

Similarly, with New Mexico, I offered scholarships in the preseason to a group of prospects with Championship Contender as their Dealbreakers. At the time, my Championship Contender rating was sufficient, but over the course of the season, it dipped below what was acceptable for them, and I was seemingly locked out. However, no other school offered any of the recruits a scholarship, so I kept them on my recruiting board just in case. When Signing Day came around, sure enough, those recruits signed for me, even though their Dealbreaker didn’t fit with my school. Now, they’ll be at a higher threat of transferring than other recruits, because players retain their Dealbreakers once they get to college, but I got them in the door. — PV

As she ramps up her nascent presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris is revealing how she will address the key issues facing the nation.

In speeches and rallies, she has voiced support for continuing many of President Joe Biden’s measures, such as lowering drug costs , forgiving student loan debt and eliminating so-called junk fees. But Harris has made it clear that she has her own views on some key matters, particularly Israel’s treatment of Gazans in its war with Hamas.

In a departure from her presidential run in 2020, the Harris campaign has confirmed that she’s moved away from many of her more progressive stances, such as her interest in a single-payer health insurance system and a ban on fracking.

Harris is also expected to put her own stamp and style on matters ranging from abortion to the economy to immigration, as she aims to walk a fine line of taking credit for the administration’s accomplishments while not being jointly blamed by voters for its shortcomings.

Her early presidential campaign speeches have offered insights into her priorities, though she’s mainly voiced general talking points and has yet to release more nuanced plans. Like Biden, she intends to contrast her vision for America with that of former President Donald Trump. ( See Trump’s campaign promises here .)

“In this moment, I believe we face a choice between two different visions for our nation: one focused on the future, the other focused on the past,” she told members of the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta at an event in Indianapolis in late July. “And with your support, I am fighting for our nation’s future.”

Here’s what we know about Harris’ views:

Harris took on the lead role of championing abortion rights for the administration after Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022. This past January, she started a “ reproductive freedoms tour ” to multiple states, including a stop in Minnesota thought to be the first by a sitting US president or vice president at an abortion clinic .

On abortion access, Harris embraced more progressive policies than Biden in the 2020 campaign, as a candidate criticizing his previous support for the Hyde Amendment , a measure that blocks federal funds from being used for most abortions.

Policy experts suggested that although Harris’ current policies on abortion and reproductive rights may not differ significantly from Biden’s, as a result of her national tour and her own focus on maternal health , she may be a stronger messenger.

High prices are a top concern for many Americans who are struggling to afford the cost of living after a spell of steep inflation. Many voters give Biden poor marks for his handling of the economy, and Harris may also face their wrath.

In her early campaign speeches, Harris has echoed many of the same themes as Biden, saying she wants to give Americans more opportunities to get ahead. She’s particularly concerned about making care – health care, child care, elder care and family leave – more affordable and available.

Harris promised at a late July rally to continue the Biden administration’s drive to eliminate so-called “junk fees” and to fully disclose all charges, such as for events, lodging and car rentals. In early August, the administration proposed a rule that would ban airlines from charging parents extra fees to have their kids sit next to them.

On day one, I will take on price gouging and bring down costs. We will ban more of those hidden fees and surprise late charges that banks and other companies use to pad their profits.”

Since becoming vice president, Harris has taken more moderate positions, but a look at her 2020 campaign promises reveals a more progressive bent than Biden.

As a senator and 2020 presidential candidate, Harris proposed providing middle-class and working families with a refundable tax credit of up to $6,000 a year (per couple) to help keep up with living expenses. Titled the LIFT the Middle Class Act, or Livable Incomes for Families Today, the measure would have cost at the time an estimated $3 trillion over 10 years.

Unlike a typical tax credit, the bill would allow taxpayers to receive the benefit – up to $500 – on a monthly basis so families don’t have to turn to payday loans with very high interest rates.

As a presidential candidate, Harris also advocated for raising the corporate income tax rate to 35%, where it was before the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that Trump and congressional Republicans pushed through Congress reduced the rate to 21%. That’s higher than the 28% Biden has proposed.

Affordable housing was also on Harris’ radar. As a senator, she introduced the Rent Relief Act, which would establish a refundable tax credit for renters who annually spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent and utilities. The amount of the credit would range from 25% to 100% of the excess rent, depending on the renter’s income.

Harris called housing a human right and said in a 2019 news release on the bill that every American deserves to have basic security and dignity in their own home.

Consumer debt

Hefty debt loads, which weigh on people’s finances and hurt their ability to buy homes, get car loans or start small businesses, are also an area of interest to Harris.

As vice president, she has promoted the Biden administration’s initiatives on student debt, which have so far forgiven more than $168 billion for nearly 4.8 million borrowers . In mid-July, Harris said in a post on X that “nearly 950,000 public servants have benefitted” from student debt forgiveness, compared with only 7,000 when Biden was inaugurated.

A potential Harris administration could keep that momentum going – though some of Biden’s efforts have gotten tangled up in litigation, such as a program aimed at cutting monthly student loan payments for roughly 3 million borrowers enrolled in a repayment plan the administration implemented last year.

The vice president has also been a leader in the White House efforts to ban medical debt from credit reports, noting that those with medical debt are no less likely to repay a loan than those who don’t have unpaid medical bills.

In a late July statement praising North Carolina’s move to relieve the medical debt of about 2 million residents, Harris said that she is “committed to continuing to relieve the burden of medical debt and creating a future where every person has the opportunity to build wealth and thrive.”

Health care

Harris, who has had shifting stances on health care in the past, confirmed in late July through her campaign that she no longer supports a single-payer health care system .

During her 2020 campaign, Harris advocated for shifting the US to a government-backed health insurance system but stopped short of wanting to completely eliminate private insurance.

The measure called for transitioning to a Medicare-for-All-type system over 10 years but continuing to allow private insurance companies to offer Medicare plans.

The proposal would not have raised taxes on the middle class to pay for the coverage expansion. Instead, it would raise the needed funds by taxing Wall Street trades and transactions and changing the taxation of offshore corporate income.

When it comes to reducing drug costs, Harris previously proposed allowing the federal government to set “a fair price” for any drug sold at a cheaper price in any economically comparable country, including Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Japan or Australia. If manufacturers were found to be price gouging, the government could import their drugs from abroad or, in egregious cases, use its existing but never-used “march-in” authority to license a drug company’s patent to a rival that would produce the medication at a lower cost.

Harris has been a champion on climate and environmental justice for decades. As California’s attorney general, Harris sued big oil companies like BP and ConocoPhillips, and investigated Exxon Mobil for its role in climate change disinformation. While in the Senate, she sponsored the Green New Deal resolution.

During her 2020 campaign, she enthusiastically supported a ban on fracking — but a Harris campaign official said in late July that she no longer supports such a ban.

Fracking is the process of using liquid to free natural gas from rock formations – and the primary mode for extracting gas for energy in battleground Pennsylvania. During a September 2019 climate crisis town hall hosted by CNN, she said she would start “with what we can do on Day 1 around public lands.” She walked that back later when she became Biden’s running mate.

Biden has been the most pro-climate president in history, and climate advocates find Harris to be an exciting candidate in her own right. Democrats and climate activists are planning to campaign on the stark contrasts between Harris and Trump , who vowed to push America decisively back to fossil fuels, promising to unwind Biden’s climate and clean energy legacy and pull America out of its global climate commitments.

If elected, one of the biggest climate goals Harris would have to craft early in her administration is how much the US would reduce its climate pollution by 2035 – a requirement of the Paris climate agreement .

Immigration

Harris has quickly started trying to counter Trump’s attacks on her immigration record.

Her campaign released a video in late July citing Harris’ support for increasing the number of Border Patrol agents and Trump’s successful push to scuttle a bipartisan immigration deal that included some of the toughest border security measures in recent memory.

The vice president has changed her position on border control since her 2020 campaign, when she suggested that Democrats needed to “critically examine” the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, after being asked whether she sided with those in the party arguing to abolish the department.

In June of this year, the White House announced a crackdown on asylum claims meant to continue reducing crossings at the US-Mexico border – a policy that Harris’ campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, indicated in late July to CBS News would continue under a Harris administration.

Trump’s attacks stem from Biden having tasked Harris with overseeing diplomatic efforts in Central America in March 2021. While Harris focused on long-term fixes, the Department of Homeland Security remained responsible for overseeing border security.

She has only occasionally talked about her efforts as the situation along the US-Mexico border became a political vulnerability for Biden. But she put her own stamp on the administration’s efforts, engaging the private sector.

Harris pulled together the Partnership for Central America, which has acted as a liaison between companies and the US government. Her team and the partnership are closely coordinating on initiatives that have led to job creation in the region. Harris has also engaged directly with foreign leaders in the region.

Experts credit Harris’ ability to secure private-sector investments as her most visible action in the region to date but have cautioned about the long-term durability of those investments.

Israel-Hamas

The Israel-Hamas war is the most fraught foreign policy issue facing the country and has spurred a multitude of protests around the US since it began in October.

After meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in late July, Harris gave a forceful and notable speech about the situation in Gaza.

We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering. And I will not be silent.”

Harris echoed Biden’s repeated comments about the “ironclad support” and “unwavering commitment” to Israel. The country has a right to defend itself, she said, while noting, “how it does so, matters.”

However, the empathy she expressed regarding the Palestinian plight and suffering was far more forceful than what Biden has said on the matter in recent months. Harris mentioned twice the “serious concern” she expressed to Netanyahu about the civilian deaths in Gaza, the humanitarian situation and destruction she called “catastrophic” and “devastating.”

She went on to describe “the images of dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time.”

Harris emphasized the need to get the Israeli hostages back from Hamas captivity, naming the eight Israeli-American hostages – three of whom have been killed.

But when describing the ceasefire deal in the works, she didn’t highlight the hostage for prisoner exchange or aid to be let into Gaza. Instead, she singled out the fact that the deal stipulates the withdrawal by the Israeli military from populated areas in the first phase before withdrawing “entirely” from Gaza before “a permanent end to the hostilities.”

Harris didn’t preside over Netanyahu’s speech to Congress in late July, instead choosing to stick with a prescheduled trip to a sorority event in Indiana.

Harris is committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, having met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at least six times and announcing last month $1.5 billion for energy assistance, humanitarian needs and other aid for the war-torn country.

At the Munich Security Conference earlier this year, Harris said: “I will make clear President Joe Biden and I stand with Ukraine. In partnership with supportive, bipartisan majorities in both houses of the United States Congress, we will work to secure critical weapons and resources that Ukraine so badly needs. And let me be clear: The failure to do so would be a gift to Vladimir Putin.”

More broadly, NATO is central to our approach to global security. For President Biden and me, our sacred commitment to NATO remains ironclad. And I do believe, as I have said before, NATO is the greatest military alliance the world has ever known.”

Police funding

The Harris campaign has also walked back the “defund the police” sentiment that Harris voiced in 2020. What she meant is she supports being “tough and smart on crime,” Mitch Landrieu, national co-chair for the Harris campaign and former mayor of New Orleans, told CNN’s Pamela Brown in late July.

In the midst of nationwide 2020 protests sparked by George Floyd’s murder by a Minneapolis police officer, Harris voiced support for the “defund the police” movement, which argues for redirecting funds from law enforcement to social services. Throughout that summer, Harris supported the movement and called for demilitarizing police departments.

Democrats largely backed away from calls to defund the police after Republicans attempted to tie the movement to increases in crime during the 2022 midterm elections.
