The Hunter School of Nursing is located at Hunter College’s Brookdale Health Science Center at 425 East 25th Street in Manhattan. The School’s programs combine liberal and professional education with a humanistic and holistic approach to health care. The School’s mission is to provide quality nursing education to promote health and provide care to culturally diverse, urban, and global communities through research, scholarship and service. 

The School offers accredited programs leading to the Master of Science (MS) and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees. The School also offers a post-graduate advanced certificate program (Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner). Graduates meet the educational requirements for national board certification in their specialties. In addition, a PhD program in Nursing will begin in Summer 2022.

What can I do with my degree in Nursing?

The MS program educates nurses for roles as Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Psychiatric-Mental Health NPs, Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialists, Community/Public Health Nursing and Nursing Administration (dual degree in Urban Policy and Leadership). The post-graduate certificate program prepares Psychiatric/Mental Health NPs. The DNP program offers concentrations for Adult-Gerontology NPs, Family NPs and Psychiatric-Mental Health NPs.

Graduates of the NP programs and the CNS program are eligible to for New York State certification and meet the educational requirements for national board certification.

The Health Professions Education Center (HPEC) is an academic learning center serving all students and faculty at the Hunter College Nursing and School of Health Professions. A variety of comprehensive support services and programs are offered at the HPEC to enhance student academic success, retention, and completion rates by applying best practices and addressing student learning needs from multiple pedagogical perspectives. Our services are designed to develop critical thinking, reinforce practice of clinical skills, and foster a supportive, professional environment for student collaboration and scholarship.

The HPEC combines traditional approaches to teaching with new instructional technologies that reflect the dynamic nature of all health professions. Services at the center include:

Center for Nursing Research

The mission of the Center for Nursing Research (CNR) at SON is to support and facilitate the development of nurse scientists and their research.

The Goals of the CNR:

Foster a sustainable culture of scholarship

Develop an infrastructure to support and disseminate nursing research

Facilitate interprofessional research collaboration

Engage students in the research process

The CNR offers support to faculty in all stages of the research process, from conceptualization of research design through obtaining funding, implementation of the research project, data analysis and publication of findings.

Opportunities are provided for students to participate in research with faculty as research assistants. The Center assists students in the preparation of research posters for presentation at nursing conferences and the CNR annual Evidence-Based Practice Poster Day.

 Hunter College School of Nursing is a partner in a major research consortium of the Weill Cornell Medical College Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC). The mission of the CTSC is to provide an environment that allows optimal use of our considerable multi-institutional assets and the diversity of our patient population to move translational research seamlessly from bench to bedside and to the community.The CTSC acts as a conduit through which essential resources, technological tools and education programs for all partners can be efficiently shared and managed. Hunter College Nursing Program Review

Hunter College (HC) is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) and is located in Manhattan on the Upper East Side. The college has over 100 fields of study and six schools including The School of Nursing. There are several nursing degrees offered for undergraduate and graduate students at this large, prestigious nursing program. The School of Nursing is on the Brookdale Campus on 25 th Street at 1 st Avenue near the Veterans Administration Hospital, New York University Medical Center, and Bellevue Hospital.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

It takes 120 credits to earn the BSN and a minimum grade of C must be earned in all classes. General education requirements must be finished before admittance to the nursing program. They are called Lower Division courses. These are Chemistry 120 and 121, Biology 120, Biology 122, and Biology 230. Students then begin their studies by taking English Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, U.S. History, Literature in English, a Humanities elective, Visual & Performance Arts, Chemistry and Lab, and Biology. Other required general education requirements are Biology 230, and Pluralism and Diversity courses. Once students have completed these courses, they may apply to the Upper Division courses.

Students who apply to the College of Nursing must be matriculated undergraduate students at Hunter College, and they must have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Students who are admitted usually have a grade point average of 3.5. Students must have completed at least 60 credits before beginning the Upper Division courses. In addition, students must have U.S. citizenship, and must be permanent residents, or have been granted some type of refugee status.

Students accepted into the Upper Division must attend classes full-time. They take Introduction to Nursing, Nursing 1, and Essentials of Pharmacology during the first semester. During the second semester, Nursing 2, Nutrition in the Nursing Process and Nursing Research must be taken. The third semester requires that Nursing 3, and two nursing electives are taken. In the final semester, Nursing 4, Nursing Management and Leadership, and Nursing and Society are taken.

This Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is for students who have a non-nursing baccalaureate degree. It consists of 50 credits that are earned over 16 months of full-time study. Students may take the NCLEX, the national exam that is required for licensure as a Registered Nurse after completing the program. Prerequisite courses include General Chemistry with lab, Organic Chemistry with lab, Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Introduction to Statistics, Microbiology, English Composition, General Psychology, and Developmental Psychology of the Life Span. Students who are admitted to the nursing program take Introduction to Nursing, Nursing 1, and Pharmacology the first quarter. They take Nursing Nutrition the second quarter, and Nursing 2, Pathophysiology, and Nursing Research & Theory the third quarter. In the summer quarter, students then take Nursing 3. Their final quarter is in the fall when they take Nursing 4 and Leadership and Systems.

Students admitted to this program must be a practicing RN in New York State. Students may be given credit for some of their previous nursing courses, and they must complete all of the required Lower Division general academic courses before being admitted to the Upper Division nursing courses. Students must complete two years or four semesters in the Upper Division and take Nursing and Societal Forces and Nursing Culturally Diverse Families during the first semester. The second semester, they take Health Assessment Throughout the Lifespan and a nursing elective. Third semester requires Nursing Research & Theory and Promotion of Wellness in the community. The last semester, students take Advancement of Roles & Relationships in professional nursing, and two nursing electives.

Nursing students in the Upper Division also spend a significant amount of hours on clinical experience. They work in many different types of health care to gain experience with pediatric and adult care, as well as psychiatric and other specialties.

The master’s level program entitled Clinical Nurse Leader is a program that prepares RNs with a BSN to move into management roles that carry heavy responsibilities. After graduation, they will be able to manage floors or departments in hospitals or to work for government agencies or corporations that need a nurse leader. This program of study offers a clinical practicum at the RNs current place of employment. RNs who have graduated from this program are considered advanced generalists in nursing.

Post Master’s Degree Certificates

Many times it is helpful to have more than one master’s degree. An RN who would like to add on another master’s degree to the Master of Science (MS) in nursing that they already have may want to complete one of Hunter College’s post master’s degree certificates. With these degrees, it is not necessary to start at the beginning by taking all of the courses required for someone without a master’s degree. A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Advanced Certificate can be earned by taking classes part-time. It usually takes from three to five semesters to earn the 15 to 24 credits needed for a post master’s certificate. Hunter College also offers a Post-Master’s Advance Certificate in Nursing Education .This program consists of four courses and typically takes four semesters to complete. One of them is a 135 hour of practice teaching.

This program consists of 90 credits and 1,000 hours of clinical experience that are earned over a period of four years. Full-time study is required to complete the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Those accepted into the program must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on their undergraduate studies. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is also required, and applicants must have a minimum score of 1200 on math and English combined. The City University of New York (CUNY) also offers a doctoral program for nurses with a MS degree who want to continue their studies. This particular program leads to a Nursing Science (DNS) degree. It is designed to train nurses to be leaders in nursing in many healthcare settings.

Application Deadlines

In order to be considered for continuation in clinical courses in the School of Nursing, students should submit a completed application to the School of Nursing before the following dates.

The Admissions and Progression Committee of the School of Nursing meets after those dates to affirm all academically qualified students for the following semester. Each application is evaluated individually with respect to the individual's potential for academic success in the nursing major. Special consideration is given to the following items:

• Mississippi College grade point average
• Total number of hours taken at Mississippi College
• Cumulative grade point average
• Last 60 credit hours grade point average
• Nursing prerequisite courses grade point average
• ACT/SAT score (if available)
• Scores on standardized admission test(s) (or equivalent)

Students who are evaluated and did not meet required benchmarks may submit a written request to be considered and re-evaluated with the next semester's students. Academically qualified students are issued a conditional offer pending successful completion of the criteria for acceptable criminal background check, drug screen, health clearance, and other entry requirements essential for entry into clinical placement experiences. 

Accelerated BSN Admission Requirements

The requirements for admission to the Accelerated B.S.N. (second degree) program are:

• Completion of all prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher (30 credits): nutrition (3), developmental psychology (3), anatomy & physiology (8), microbiology (4), chemistry (3), statistics (3), Bible (3), and ALH 250 Transition to Health Care Professions (3).
• Students with repeats in more than two prerequisite courses (listed above) will not be considered for progression into upper-division clinical level nursing.
• Successful completion of college core courses based on a degree from an accredited college or university (must have a first undergraduate degree). 
• A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. 
• Completion of the HESI (A2) Admission Examination (80 with 3 attempts) OR ACT Score of 21 or higher.

Specific prerequisite competencies and the MC School of Nursing "Transition to Nursing Practice" course (ALH 250) must be met in order to fulfill nursing expectations, and within one calendar year of clinical program start. ALH 250 is available online for ABSN students and priority registration places (Fall, Spring, or Summer) are given to students the semester PRIOR to the expected program startup. ABSN students who do not have a Bible course are recommended to take either Old Testament or New Testament ahead of their clinical courses.

Students interested in pursuing Latin Honors must earn 65 MC credit hours and need to be aware of this when selecting pre-requisite courses, as transfer hours do NOT address this requirement.

In order to be considered for enrollment in the ABSN program, students should submit a completed application to the School of Nursing before the following dates.

Our baccalaureate program in the School of Nursing offers three program options: Prelicensure, RN-BSN and ABSN.

Prelicensure

The prelicensure option is for nursing students who are preparing for entry into professional nursing by taking the registered nurse licensure exam. 

The prelicensure option requires a secondary application process after students are admitted to UNCW.

The RN-BSN option allows the licensed registered nurse, prepared at the associate degree or diploma level, to obtain a Bachelor of Science with a concentration in professional nursing in a mostly online format. 

If you have a bachelor's degree and want to transition into nursing, the  Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program offers a fast-track to your new career in only four semesters.

The curriculum incorporates the professional values of client-centered care (altruism, human dignity, and autonomy), lifelong learning (clinical reasoning and integrity), and quality improvement (research and social justice).

Before the Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1855, nursing in Russia was primarily based on religion and philanthropy. The war sparked an interest in nursing care among many women in the country. In the 1900s, rumors of war and epidemics reinforced and expanded the nursing (Sister of Mercy) community. During that time, the revolution shaped the roles of nurses in the country, including military, visiting, kindergarten, and specialty nurses. Formal nurse training schools were established beginning in 1935.

Russia’s medical education has evolved in recent years, and it is now recognized as one of the best countries for offering health-related programs, with internationally renowned colleges and universities. Nursing in Russia is a four-year undergraduate program; postgraduate nursing education is not yet widely available in the country. Nursing education and training at the postgraduate level were only established in 1991.

It was granted autonomy in 2012 for the development, implementation, and administration of its educational program.

RUDN University is also one of the best nursing schools in Russia. Its nursing program, which is part of the institute of medicine, was established with a curriculum that focuses on providing competencies in medical skill, administration, and research. Students are also trained in foreign languages, as well as practical and clinical skills, through immersions in partner institutions in Moscow. The annual tuition for the program is US$4,300.

3. Perm State Medical University
